History of Sigma Yachts

Sigma Yachts was established in the United Kingdom back in the late 1970s, radically changing the sailing landscape with their line of high-performance cruiser racers. This innovative boat manufacturer found immediate popularity and, amidst great appreciation, quickly emerged as one of the leader troves of cruiser-racer designs across the globe.

Sigma's boat-building ideology was centred on the concept of crafting cruiser racers that could operate well on both fronts. David Thomas, a well-known British designer, was the mastermind behind the creations that were famous for their speed, seaworthy build, and sensible below-deck arrangements. The Sigma 33’ and 36' became stalwarts at yacht clubs, with enduring popularity that has spanned decades.

Today, Sigma yachts are no longer in production but they remain an iconic part of the sport cruiser racing yacht genealogy. Even though the company has since changed hands and moved its base of operations to other regions, Sigma's original home was in Cornwall, and many of their yachts are still seen sailing and racing on UK waters. This timeless brand fully embodies the spirit of robust British sailing engineering and their exemplary product line remains a testimony to their excellence.

Sigma 400 for sale.  A very fast cruiser racer of Rob Humphries hull design based on the 1988 Whitbread Maxi “Rothmans”. She delivers spectacularly in heavy weather with balance, stability and no slamming. Raced in her early life, this boat has seen more cruising in the last ten years but has benefitted from extensive renovation in 2014 including a new engine (200 hours), excellent electrics (Rolls batteries and inverter), solar panels, an extensive electronics fit including full race TackTik instruments, radar,  VHF radio with AIS and a full suite of Kevlar sails plus two symmetrical spinnakers. Fractional rig with running backstays. This is a lot of boat for a 40 footer.  Some renovation to the rear cabins and the option to fit a supplied new table is needed otherwise in excellent condition. Standing rigging was professionally checked and reinstalled in 2017. The current owners have moved abroad and are reluctant to sell but this boat needs to be sailed!

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

This Sigma 400 is IRC 1.2 she is a comfortable racer cruiser whilst satisfying the needs of a family or friends. Fully loaded with Raymarine navigation equipment she has had a considerable amount of money spent on her in the last few years not to mention the uber practical little sprayhood which her owner says was well worth it! She is a 1993 boat with a lot of life left in her as you will see when you race past everyone else on the water with minimal effort. These boat details are subject to contract. Sigma boats had their heyday in the late 1970s. This was a trademark created by Marine Project, a British company that built them alongside the Moody range. Moodys were pure cruisers and Marine Project wanted to gain a foothold in the lucrative race/cruise market. The first to leave the yard was the 33, a competitive boat at the time.

Around 1988, Sigma merged with Moody and production ceased in late 1992. The most popular models were the Sigma 33, 36, 38 and 41. Others, such as the 29 and 35, were less successful, but this doesn't mean that they were less well-designed, simply that prizes and the effects of fashion carry a lot of weight in the regatta world! Sigma yachts: speedy and seaworthy!

In fact, it was the middle of a race that inspired the Sigma 38! Following the tragic Fastnet 1979, the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Royal Thames Yacht Club joined forces to sponsor research into a boat capable of coping with the difficult conditions of the Irish Sea. A drawing by David Thomas, who had already designed the Sigma 33, won the prize. The design was the Sigma 38, which became extremely popular: 125 were built, and owners continue to run a thriving club. Northshore Shipyard bought the moulds, but, for cost reasons, only one unit was produced, in the mid-1990s.

When you step on board this Sigma 400 you get an immediate feeling of strength and stability. She is very well built and has proven to be a very fast cruiser / racer as expected from a Rob Humphries design.

Her overall hull design was based on the 1988 Whitbread Maxi 'Rothmans' and this clearly gives her the famous balance and stablity she is known to deliver particularly in heavy weather. This boat has raced some Round Irelands and Fastnets but has for the last decade been a great performer on IRC in a very competitive 'round the cans' club scene. Equally happy racing or doing some serious miles, this is a lot of boat for a 40 footer, and will provide the new owner with the much sought-after combination of fast racing and comfortable cruising.

Set up for racing at the moment, she needs only a little bit of polish to get her back looking tip top. A new set of cushions below would be a great advantage, and although not necessary, a sand and varnish below decks would have her looking brand new.
