Comanche: Designer notes

Published on December 23rd, 2014 by Editor -->

Designers Guillaume Verdier and VPLP Architects provide notes on the 100-foot Comanche… Launched in September 2014, Comanche resulted from the studies realised on the Macif and Banque Populaire IMOCA 60 monohulls, who finished first and second in the 2012 Vendée Globe.

What distinguishes her from her 100-foot competitors, such as Wild Oats or Perpetual Loyal, is her great beam, her high mast which is placed very far aft, and her boom perpendicular to the transom.

Comanche is a virtually narrow boat; she is made to sail heeled thanks to the appendages’ plan. As such, she enjoys a high fineness ratio sail plan. Inside, the structure is optimized to make the boat more resistant to damage. The cockpit was designed bearing in mind manual manoeuvres to gain weight.

Guillaume Verdier: “Comanche is not just an object, it is the result of a great collaboration with skipper Ken Read, the Tim Hacket / Casey Smith team, and the boat builder Brandon Linton. We all enjoyed working on this project. It was a positive and constructive collaboration: every mistake or difficulty was an opportunity to bounce back and find new ideas.”

Vincent Lauriot-Prévost: “After the IMOCAs, this was our first exercise in the 100 footer monohull category. As light as possible, as strong as possible, such was the equation we shared with Guillaume Verdier. Her very powerful hull, her maximum draught to enter most marinas, her low freeboard height and side water ballasts make her the most powerful ship in the 100 footer fleet.”

During the Solas Big Boat Challenge, on December 9th in Sydney Harbour, Comanche’s first confrontation with her Sydney Hobart contestants revealed all the boat’s potential in light conditions.

Ken Read, the skipper, after the Solas: “We were very pleased with how the boat went upwind, we could not have been happier with how Comanche went. She was designed to do exactly the opposite of what we had today. This boat is a beast. Do we know how it will handle (the tough conditions off the New South Wales coast and Bass Strait), will it stay in one piece? We have no idea.”

Jim Clark, the boat’s owner, will present Comanche at the start of the Sydney Hobart on December 26th. Ken Read, the skipper, and his 28 crew members will aim for line honours for this boat who’s more dedicated to records and speed. After the Sydney Hobart, Comanche should tackle the crewed Transatlantic Record, currently held by Mari Cha IV.

Andoo Comanche reaches Hobart in darkness in a triumphant first race since claiming line honours in 2019.

Andoo Comanche outlasts LawConnect to win Sydney to Hobart line honours

  • Finish time less than three hours off race record set in 2017
  • Black Jack crosses third, Hamilton Island Wild Oats fourth

Andoo Comanche has claimed line honours in the Sydney to Hobart for the fourth time, marking a triumphant return for the supermaxi after a brief hiatus.

The 100-foot yacht crossed the River Derwent finish line shortly before 1am (AEDT) on Wednesday with a time of one day, 11 hours, 56 minutes and 48 seconds.

Andoo Comanche, which had not sailed the 628-nautical mile bluewater classic since tasting success in 2019, has now claimed line honours in four of the past seven races.

She held off a strong challenge in darkness down the River Derwent from LawConnect, which finished about 27 minutes later.

Last year’s line honours victor, Black Jack, was third, while nine-time winner, Hamilton Island Wild Oats, finished in fourth place.

Andoo Comanche skipper John Winning Jr was joined on the crossing by his father, who had competed in the Sydney to Hobart race back in the 1970s.

“It’s pretty emotional. These are the types of things that you look back on and say you’re glad you got those opportunities,” Winning Jr said. “He’s a big golfer and I hate golf, so it’s the only sport we can do together.”

Winning Jr dedicated the victory to “dear friend” Matt Munting, who helped him set up his extreme sports venture Andoo X.

Andoo Comanche set the pace down Australia’s east coast despite a poor start on Boxing Day.

Winning Jr said his crew had to navigate some “hairy” moments in the early stages, made more difficult by spectator zones that narrowed the course. The supermaxi also hit a 10-foot log early in the race, suffering a chip to her rudder.

Winning Jr said he was worried about the winds dying in the notoriously fickle River Derwent. “[Winning the race] didn’t feel real until the last minute. It means a hell of a lot,” he said.

after newsletter promotion

Andoo Comanche, the pre-race favourite, was at one stage on track to break the line-honours record time – one day, nine hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds – she set in 2017 but ultimately missed out by almost three hours.

She is the first yacht to take out Sydney to Hobart line honours under three different owners or skippers.

Andoo Comanche was one of two supermaxis forced to take penalty turns during a dramatic start to the race in Sydney on Monday. The overall race winner, decided on handicap, will be decided in the coming days.

Just three yachts have so far retired from the starting fleet of 109, a far cry from 2021’s race when 36 boats pulled the pin across the first two days in rough weather. The Sydney to Hobart was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Andoo Comanche leads Sydney-Hobart yacht race

Sydney (AFP) – Australian boat Andoo Comanche held a slim lead in the Sydney-Hobart yacht race Tuesday but will need winds to pick up if it is going to challenge the course's record time.

Issued on: 27/12/2022 - 02:16

About 22 hours after the boats departed Sydney Harbour, Andoo Comanche was leading the three other 100-foot supermaxis -- the fastest boats in the blue water classic.

The boat, skippered by owner John Winning, was 16 nautical miles in front of perpetual challenger Wild Oats, according to an online race tracker.

LawConnect was in third while defending champion Black Jack was at the rear of the supermaxi pack.

There were hopes Andoo Comanche could beat the race record time after the fleet took advantage of favourable winds on Monday afternoon, although those conditions lightened overnight.

The race leader will need to make up about 76 nautical miles to challenge the record of one day, 9 hours, 15min and 24sec -- set by Comanche under a different skipper in 2017.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecast north to north-easterly winds would build throughout Tuesday to about 35 knots, potentially freeing the fleet for a speedy run through the treacherous Bass Strait to the finish line in the Tasmanian state capital.

Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Arthur Lane, said a record time for the 628-nautical mile race could not be discounted.

"It should be an early evening finish because the winds will increase all day today. It will get fast and furious from here on, and I would expect them to be, before midnight, in Hobart," he told Nine News.

"They are behind race record at the moment, but the winds are increasing. They are going to be very, very fresh from midday onwards today. So, I think you will find that the record is still quite possible to break."

While the supermaxis can hit high downwind speeds, they must balance it with the need to avoid breakages and sail damage.

The Bass Strait, which separates Tasmania from the mainland, can unleash perilous conditions.

In 1998, a deep depression proved catastrophic for the fleet. Six sailors were killed, and 55 more were rescued after five boats sank.

Race officials said only two of the original 109 boats at sea had been forced to retire to date.

Andoo Comanche

John ‘Herman’ Winning Jr has chartered the Sydney Hobart record holder, Comanche . In their first hit out, Winning took Line Honours from Black Jack in the fluky 2022 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race. She took Line Honours in just under 20 hours and won the inaugural 260nm Tollgate Islands Race. Herman has prefixed the boat’s name with ‘Andoo’ for Andoo Products, which partners with his Appliances Online. This is the boat to beat for Line Honours.

American Jim Clark and Aussie wife Kristy bought brand new Comanche for her first Rolex Sydney Hobart in 2014 and finished 49 mins behind Line Honours victor, Wild Oats XI , ahead of her Line Honours victory in 2015 after scoring Line Honours in the light and fluky 2015 Rolex Fastnet Race. She also smashed the 2225 nautical mile Transpac monohull record in 2017. Jim Cooney and Samantha Grant bought her just prior to the 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart and as LDV Comanche , she took Line Honours and the race record after a protest against Wild Oats XI . In 2018, Comanche was pipped for second over the Rolex Sydney Hobart finish line by Black Jack after a race-long battle between the four 100-footers, won by Wild Oats XI . Cooney last took her to Hobart in 2019 and took Line Honours after doing the same in the 2019 Transpac Race.

‘msc euribia’: see inside northern europe’s newest cruise ship.

Built in 2023, the MSC Euribia cruise ship spends much of the year in Northern Europe.

The newest cruise ship in the MSC Cruises fleet sails Northern Europe itineraries for much of the year. There’s lots to see and do between port calls, so Euribia is a great choice for families, young couples, or groups of friends who don't mind a lively, pan-European onboard atmosphere.

Unlike the line’s other recently-launched ship, MSC World Europa , which was the first in a new class of vessel, the design of Euribia is based on the tried-and-tested ‘Meraviglia Plus’ class.

So, if you’ve sailed on Grandiosa or Virtuosa , the focus on indoor spaces such as the iconic two-deck interior promenade will feel instantly familiar.

The cruise ship, designed to accommodate almost 5,000 passengers at double occupancy, can reach full capacity at 6,327 guests, but this typically happens only during vacation periods when many more children are on board.

'Galleria Euribia' is the venue for many of MSC Euribia's restaurants, shops, bars and parties.

Euribia can feel crowded at popular times, such as pre- and post-dinner on sea days. That’s especially true when adverse weather drives everyone indoors—common in Northern Europe throughout the year.

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Design Upgrade Shines In New Leak

‘fallout’ dethroned in amazon prime video’s top 10 list by a new offering, tonight s updated northern lights forecast here s where you could see aurora borealis.

However, it’s worth taking the time to fully explore the ship on embarkation day , as there are quieter spots to be found. The Carousel Lounge is open throughout the day, and there is a lot of seating around the atrium.

Entertainment For All On Euribia

MSC Cruises is known as a lively cruise line , and Euribia certainly lives up to that reputation, with multilingual, family-friendly activities throughout the day and late-night parties for adults.

The three-level atrium on MSC Euribia features the signature Swarovski staircases.

The ship’s central feature is the three-deck central atrium and ‘Galleria Euribia’, a visually stunning two-deck interior promenade with a curved LED roof, home to specialty dining, shops, bars, and lounges. It’s a venue for both organized and spontaneous parties, including the captain’s welcome. At one end is the atrium, home to the famous Swarovski staircases .

The ship boasts a spacious rooftop pool deck and a tiered aft sundeck. Key attractions like waterslides, a ropes course, and top-deck waterpark are all popular spots when the weather is favorable. Should that not be the case, there is sheltered seating on the main pool deck.

MSC Euribia features a main pool deck with a large screen. An adjacent indoor pool with retractable ... [+] roof gives flexibility.

Inside, the fun keeps going with a covered swimming pool, more hot tubs, a sports court and a vast arcade. Kids clubs are available for various age groups, giving parents a few hours of peace especially on sea days.

Evening entertainment includes three seatings for the main show in the Delphi Theater, which is bookable using the ‘MSC for Me’ app. Although there is no theater bar, the ship’s 21 bars and lounges mean you’re never far from a drink, although be prepared to wait a while at busy times.

Secondary performance space the Carousel Lounge hosts big band concerts in a more informal atmosphere. The flexible space functions as an additional observation lounge during the day, with snacks and full bar service available.

MSC Euribia's Carousel Lounge is an observation lounge by day and a secondary performance space by ... [+] night.

As with all cruise ships, the casino is only open when at sea, and as a welcome plus is entirely non-smoking. Smokers are nevertheless well catered for with several outdoor smoking areas around the ship.

Accommodation Options

The 2,419 cabins on Euribia offer a wide range of choice for guests, although the brown and beige color scheme won’t be to everyone’s taste.

The 755 interior cabins offer the best value, while duplex suites with balcony hot tubs are available for those seeking the most luxurious experience.

Balcony views can be worth the extra money on Norwegian fjords itineraries.

The high number of guests typically sailing on Euribia is one of two very good reasons to splurge on one of more than 1,000 balcony cabins. The other? Northern Europe itself, especially Norwegian fjords cruises .

Such cruises are partly about the ports, but just as much about the sailaway. Having a private space from which to enjoy the scenery is worthwhile. That being said, inside cabins on Euribia are spacious compared with industry standards, and offer the best value.

Inside cabins are an economical yet comfortable way of staying on MSC Euribia.

There is plenty of outdoor space on higher decks to enjoy the scenery, although you will struggle to find a window seat in popular lounges.

Varied Dining Venues

As a line firmly in the mass-market segment of the industry, MSC is not renowned for its food offering. Yet, steady improvement has been made in recent years.

Kaito sushi bar is a speciality restaurant on MSC Euribia.

The inclusive offerings are more than satisfactory, especially the seafood, and the ship’s breads and pasta, all made on board. Also produced on board is fresh mozzarella. More than 650 pounds of it is made—and eaten—every day.

Euribia’s buffet restaurant can be hit-and-miss and does get crowded at popular times, but at least one main dining room is also open for breakfast/brunch/lunch, depending on the day.

White corn tacos are among the menu items at MSC Euribia's Mexican-themed cantina.

Adding to the choice is a number of speciality restaurants, including French-themed Le Grill, Japanese grill, sushi bar, and a Mexican cantina. The latter, with authentic white corn tacos and a $20 all-you-can-eat option, is outstanding value.

Spa And Fitness

With the availability of delicious pizza almost 24/7, it’s wise to get familiar with the fitness offer on Euribia. A well-equipped fitness center with views is open from 6am, and the combined walking and jogging track on deck 16 is popular on sea days.

Part of the thermal suite on MSC Euribia.

The Aurea Spa features a thermal area, for which day passes or cruise-long passes are available. A variety of massages and treatments are available in private treatment rooms, while a nail and beauty salon, and a barber shop rounds out the offer.

Aside from the spa, a total of five swimming pools and several hot tubs are available throughout the ship.

The Yacht Club Experience

If the Vegas-style amenities and atmosphere appeal but you want some peace and quiet too, Euribia offers the MSC Yacht Club experience.

The Top Sail Lounge is an observation lounge and bar exclusively for Yacht Club guests on MSC ... [+] Euribia.

MSC’s take on the ‘ship-within-a-ship’ concept is an access-controlled area of the ship for 100 cabins with an exclusive restaurant, bar and lounge, and an outdoor deck with pool, bar and daytime buffet.

Situated at the front of the ship, both the outside deck and observation lounge offer some of the best views anywhere on Euribia .

Unlike other line’s premium offerings, Euribia’s Yacht Club features a range of accommodation, including interior cabins, giving guests a more budget-friendly way to accessing a premium experience.

The private terrace in MSC Euribia's Yacht Club features bar service, a daytime buffet, and a ... [+] private pool.

Guests staying in the Yacht Club pay substantially more, but have access to butler service, and a premium drinks package, among other perks.

A ‘Greener’ Ship

While cruising is anything but a sustainable activity, Euribia is powered by liquified natural gas (LNG), something which not all new cruise ships are.

Although still criticized by environmental campaigners, LNG is considered the ‘greenest’ fuel that’s available today at the scale required for cruise ships. LNG significantly reduces sulphur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions compared with traditional maritime fuels.

MSC also claims an advanced onboard wastewater treatment system, energy efficiency through smart HVAC systems, and the ongoing ocean conservation work of the MSC Foundation .

Euribia isn’t for everyone, but what cruise ship is? If you enjoy a lively atmosphere, a packed program of activities, and a healthy dose of Vegas-style sparkle and glamor, Euribia could be for you.

Custom Line Navetta 38

The world premiere of Custom Line ’s Navetta 38 funnily enough began on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE), with the superyacht of the hour more than 500 miles away.

Galassi is clearly masterful at catering to his clientele, or what he describes as “the most exclusive member’s club.” He knows they are accustomed to a luxury lifestyle: Dom Pérignon was free-flowing throughout the entire two-day affair and a dedicated crew was on hand to meet any demand. He also understands that most have an eye for aesthetics, and thus would appreciate the inlaid woodwork, Lalique crystal panels, and other intricate details of the train.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

After just a couple of hours chugging through the breathtaking European countryside, I can already see that the CEO’s grandiose marketing ploy has paid off. The bar car is a sea of smiling faces, and I notice multiple owners carefully eyeing the detailed model of the Navetta 38 that sits on the piano. Galassi tells me later that the team sold the fifth hull on the train trip.

The Navetta 38 is the result of collaboration between the Custom Line team and the Ferretti Group engineering department, with Italian architect Filippo Salvetti shaping the exterior and Milanese firm ACPV Architects spearheading the interiors. The first unit, owned by Galassi himself, features a white superstructure and a gray, semi-displacement hull. I know, “gray” sounds rather boring, but this chameleon-like hue changed with the light throughout the evening. The hull looked pewter at cocktail hour and almost white later that night. It was my favorite thing about the exterior.

Custom Line Navetta 38 in Venice

I take a tour of the interior with several journalists the following day. The living quarters are the epitome of quiet luxury, showcasing a subtle color palette, soft, curved lines, and an array of natural materials. Light oak runs across the floors, while raffia and leather adorn the walls. The bathrooms are decked out in pale Pietra d’Orcia stone and the beds are covered with neutral Frette bedding. Galassi’s comprehensive art collection provides the only real pop of color, actually.

The understated styling seems to reflect Galassi’s approach to design at large. The man is “obsessed with elegance,” by his own admission. He also says Italians are “condemned to beauty,” meaning they cannot even think of doing something ugly “because it’s against our historical tradition.” Furthermore, Galassi seems to be trying to counter the growing culture of excess. “Luxury is becoming vulgar. Luxury is becoming too flashy. Luxury is becoming a bit too arrogant,” Galassi tells us on the sun deck. “Now, is there a way of having luxury with elegance, low-profile luxury where the material speaks, luxury full of good taste? I think the answer is yes.”

Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi

With a beam of 26 feet and an interior volume of 300 GT, the yacht feels far bigger than my own, two-story London terrace. The layout is customizable, with an array of different configurations available. At the center lies an open-plan salon and dining room with sliding doors that open on each side to create an alfresco feel. The upscale owner’s suite is also positioned on the main deck—Galassi has a chic dressing room and a fancy steam shower in his—while four guest cabins and four crew cabins are located on the lower deck. Plush outdoor lounges adorn the aft decks and bow, while a full-beam beach club with fold-out terraces sits at the stern. The sundeck, Galassi’s favorite feature, offers a Jacuzzi, a bar, and sweeping views of Venice’s lagoon on this particular day.

Custom Line Navetta 38

Interestingly, Galassi says the technology is what sets the Navetta 38 apart from other vessels in her class. The yacht is equipped with cutting-edge anti-vibration, soundproofing, and stabilization systems. In addition, the high-tech helm, which is clad in a scratch-proof material called Fenix, looks straight out of a sci-fi film. Powered by MAN V-12 engines that can churn out 1,400 hp, the yacht has a top speed of 15 knots and a range of about 2,800 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots. The Navetta 38 doesn’t have to stop in each country to switch engines like the VSOE, either.

As for future launches, Custom Line will debut a new range in the summer of 2026. The yard is also unveiling a 164-footer at the Monaco Yacht Show in September. That superyacht will be the largest Custom Line yet. One can only imagine what Galassi has in store for the premiere party, then.

Israel Defense Forces launched a punishing airstrike against Hamas militants hunkering down in a school run by the United Nation’s organization for Palestinian refugees near the center of Gaza Tuesday, claiming it targeted a “war room” full of fighters who participated in the bloody Oct. 7 terror attack.

Israel says of the 15 people killed in the strike on a UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school in Nuseirat, “more than 10” belonged to Hamas, though it didn’t offer details about the identities of the others.

Earlier in the day, IDF forces killed “dozens” of Hamas terrorists in the northern Gaza city of Jabalya in some of the fiercest fighting in the region in two months, The Jerusalem Post reported .

Israeli forces claimed the strike was executed using precision munitions to help minimize civilian casualties.

However, the strike also hit a residential building reportedly holding “dozens” of refugees who had fled Rafah days earlier. Gaza Civil Defense reported pulling eight bodies from the rubble of the destroyed three-story home, mostly women and children, and rescuing several others.

IDF said the room inside the UNRWA school had been used by Hamas’ Nukbha wing to plot a series of attacks against Israeli troops in recent weeks.

According to Israeli intelligence, the eliminated Nukhba militants were among the Hamas members who massacred more than 1,200 Israeli civilians.

The embattled UNRWA has come under fire in recent months following accusations from Israel that hundreds of its roughly 13,000 employees in Gaza belonged to militant groups including Hamas.

Israel’s accusations prompted major international backers to withhold millions of dollars from the organization, though it has not provided evidence to back up its assertion.

We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. One of the world's best sailors, Ken Read nominates Comanche.

I was so fortunate to be working with an owner in Jim Clark who had a vision of all speed/no compromise. He was dared by a couple of Australian 100-footer owners to come join the party. The first lesson is never dare a billionaire to do anything! The result, was Comanche .

VPLP and Guillaume Verdier’s design group teamed up with a great concept and created something that blew away our loftiest expectations. She had an amazing build team at Hodgdon Shipyard in Maine. On time. On weight, impeccable.

Comanche was built to do one thing only: be first to finish and break records. And that she did. The records we broke that are still in play… the 24-hour monohull record of 618 miles, the transatlantic monohull, Transpac, Bermuda Race, and many more.

Since she was sold she continued to shine, breaking the Sydney Hobart and recently the Middle Sea Race records. Comanche was, and is, a water-bound rocketship, a pleasure to sail, turns heads wherever she goes, and so much fun to be a part of.
