Why bareboat charter in the UK?

Sailing from the Solent has something for everyone. Head east, and you can explore the beautiful harbour of Chichester and onwards to Brighton.

To the west, particularly on a longer charter, you'll find some of the most beautiful destinations the South Coast has to offer. Visiting Studland Bay by boat is magical, explore the spectacular Jurassic Coast or push further west into the delights of Lyme Bay and Dartmouth.

And of course, if you head south you arrive in the legendary Channel Islands, and legislation permitting, there's the north coast of Brittany.

Sailing around the Solent itself has plenty to occupy any sailor for a week or a fortnight, with an amazing range of harbours, ports, rivers, anchorages and beaches to explore. We can suggest routes for more experienced skippers or easier options to suit your level of experience.

Why choose Prometheus Sailing?

Sunsail pioneered the concept of Flotilla sailing over 45 years ago. They have been the foremost bareboat charter company in the world. In 2021, the Sunsail UK team formed their own company, Prometheus Sailing Limited, to run the Sunsail fleet from Portsmouth Harbour.

Prometheus combine the best of the best: a wealth of highly experienced and dedicated staff, combined with fresh enthusiasm, professionalism, a passion for doing what we do and doing it well.

Why choose our Sunsail yachts?

Our Sunsail 41.0s have been built by Jeanneau to our specifications. They are a joy to sail on a light winds day and remain balanced and comfortable in heavier conditions. The high freeboard, spacious cockpit and step free deck is great for the demands of corporate racing, and serves equally well for sunbathing on a gentle cruise.

Below decks there are three large double cabins, and with the airy saloon offering 9 berths and a well-designed efficient galley.

Take an expert skipper with you

If you love the sound of chartering and sailing in the Solent and feel you need some extra support, why not book one of our skippers as well?

Everyone on our team has been chosen both for their yachting expertise and their kind professionalism.

Don’t forget though – if you decide to book a skipper they’ll need an allocated cabin. Or you could arrange for them to stay on shore at each destination.

charter sailing yacht uk

For the experienced sailor wanting the freedom to cruise at their own pace, bareboat chartering is for you.   All of our UK sailing yachts are available for hire for completely independent sailing, leaving you to plan your own itinerary and to sail where and when you choose – within the Solent, along the UK South Coast, or across the Channel to France and the Channel Islands.

Bareboat Sailing Area

Unlike other charter companies, Hamble Point Yacht Charters offers an unrestricted sailing area, so you can explore the Solent and Isle of Wight, or venture further afield at no extra cost.

Bareboat Charter Requirements

To book a bareboat yacht charter from us we have to be satisfied that you will be able to safely skipper the yacht throughout your sailing holiday and return her safely to us. Our general requirement for bareboat hire is that the skipper should be experienced to a level equivalent to RYA Coastal Skipper and that at least one crew member should have experience equivalent to RYA Competent Crew. If you do not have formal sailing qualifications that meet these conditions then we will request a “sailing CV” from you listing your sailing experience and our Fleet Manager will have a chat with you to satisfy himself that you are competent to hire your choice of sailing yacht.

For some of the smaller boats on our fleet (up to 36 feet), it is possible to arrange a bareboat charter from us with two persons with the equivalent of RYA Day Skipper (Tidal) on board; or on occasion, an experienced RYA Day Skipper plus an RYA Competent Crew. If you are unsure about whether you and your crew have the necessary qualifications then please call us to discuss this further. If there is any doubt then there is always the option to include a skipper in your charter for the first day. If they are happy that you are competent to continue sailing on your own after the first day then they will leave you to continue your charter on your own.

If you don’t yet have the right qualifications, complete your RYA training course with us.

Our superb fleet of sailing yachts are maintained to the highest standards and fully equipped with stereos, TVs in some cases, domestic equipment, as well as all essential safety and navigation equipment, charts and almanacs designed to make your cruise comfortable, enjoyable and safe. Many of our yachts have state of the art electronics as well as the basics; including colour chart plotters, AIS and radar. Please see our standard list of charter equipment for more information on what you will find on board. If you have children on board then we would be happy to discuss adding child netting to the guard rails to help keep your little ones on board!

Bareboat Charter Support

We are members of the  British Marine Leisure Boating Association as well as the Professional Charter Asociation  and we fully meet their standards.

All our charterers have the support of Sea Start as well as our full time staff at our base and a 24-hour emergency telephone line.so if you do experience any difficulties during your charter there is comprehensive support available to you.

Other Sailing Ideas

If bareboat chartering isn’t for you, other options are available. You could hire a boat with skipper  join a ‘Cruise in Company’ flotilla or book an individual berth on a group sailing yacht, offering you the ability to get out on the water if you wish to sail but can’t or don’t want to skipper a yacht or cannot get a full crew to commit; or if you would prefer to sail in the company of other yachts:

Book a Berth Weekends

  • Avoid the hassle of getting sailing friends to commit
  • Just book your own berth!
  • Usually 5 crew plus skipper
  • Our skipper takes responsibility, you log miles as crew
  • Meet new people, make new friends
  • See the dates available

Cruise in Company Weekends

  • Charter a yacht and sail with us “flotilla fashion”
  • Cruise to an agreed destination – usually on the UK south coast or north coast of France
  • Enjoy the evening discussing your exploits!

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

This is truly a 5 * service. The team really looked after us both ashore on arrival and also while at sea. We were a relatively inexperienced crew but always felt the team ashore had our backs. Thoroughly recommended.

I just wanted to say Thank-you very much for the weekend charter. It was exactly what we were after (albeit cold!) plus Andy was an awesome teacher and great company. We’ll definitely be keen to book again soon!

We had a fabulous four days. Marina is ideally placed for the Solent, boat was in great condition, well equipped and a joy to sail. We were well briefed and the shore side team including the dog very friendly.

We charted one of the sailing yachts for a fantastic weekend cruise in the Solent. The boat was in superb condition and well equipped, the staff was very helpful explaining how things work on the yacht and there was also a video available with all the important information. 10/10 would recommend!

Had a fantastic week chartering Blue Otter, Alex was incredibly helpful and sent loads of information and date checking prior to booking. There was a handover video and both the handover and return were really smooth. The boat was lovely and well maintained and Lee was really helpful in recommending places to visit (and helping identify the steering issue as an autopilot takeover - doh!). Definitely will be back and would fully recommend!

Just back from a lovely week in the Solent. Great service from HPYC from first inquiry through to return handover. Very straightforward to deal with, and the yacht was in excellent condition. We've chartered from many companies in the UK and abroad and the attention to detail (and flawless inventory!) was second to none. Everything about the yacht and equipment had clearly been well looked after and was in immaculate condition. Great service, will use again.

Always very friendly service, and well-maintained yachts. Easy check-in and checkout. Will be back...

We had a great time and were very happy with everything. Your team were genuinely friendly and were very helpful when we needed it. Is a big contrast to many charter companies I have dealt with in the past.

Watching the sun go down with a glass of bubbly on the deck of a sparkling yacht was unbelievable. What a treat, and a much needed change of scenery in these troubled times. We will be back for sure

Fab service, nothing too much trouble, including my daft questions. I'll be a repeat customer for sure!

We had a great time sailing with Lee for a few days at the beginning of September. Hamble Point Yacht Charters supplied us an impeccable 45 ft Hanse yacht, which was handled with complete mastery by Captain Lee. It was a privilege to sail with Lee, who is clearly a highly skilled professional taking great pride in his work ... but who is also a fantastic character with a great sense of humour and plenty of fun stories to keep the whole family entertained. He balances the serious side of safety and learning about sailing with a whopping dose of amusement and good cheer. We sailed the Solent in some decent seas, visited Bucklers Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River and learned lots about British nautical history. Our boys started somewhat of a fishing trend catching bass off the back of the boat in Portsmouth and we would love to sail with Lee again in the future. The man truly knows his stuff, maintained the boat impeccably and went to every effort to ensure that we had a great time. Many thanks to “Shippers” and Hamble Point Charters. We’ll be back.

Chartered bareboats with HPYC on numerous occasions most recently in Sept 2020. Always helpful and accommodating. Highly recommend.

We had a fantastic weekend sailing on Loxley B. Boat in super condition and spotlessly clean, Alex. and the team very thorough and always on hand to answer any questions. A great experience. We will be back. Thank you!

Lots of information from office with a friendly service. We selected a one of the cheaper yachts and was please with find everything work and was cleaned and tidy. We will definitely be back

This was the first time we had tried chartering and as experienced racing sailors we didn't know what to expect. Covid has closed down all our events this year so this was a chance to get afloat at least once in 2020. What a great experience and Alex and all the Hamble staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. We had a great three days and we will be back !! We would have no hesitation is recommending Hamble Point Yacht Charters.

Guide to United Kingdom

An island nation of rugged coastline, old-world charm and rich cultural heritage

Encompassing England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom offers nearly 12,500 km of diverse coastline to explore, with countless picture-perfect destinations to discover. Whether you are keen on fossil hunting along the UNESCO-listed Jurassic coast, yearn for whisky and golf tours around Scotland’s west coast and inner Hebrides, dream of strolling along Cornwall’s swathes of golden-hued beaches and charming fishing villages or simply wish to soak up the captivating beauty of the Scilly Isles; there is a perfect luxury yacht charter destination for everyone.

One of the most popular cruising hotspots is the UK's renowned sailing mecca along the south coast, characterized by steep limestone cliffs, sheltered coves and charming fishing villages. From the Isle of Wight to the Scilly Isles there are myriad treasures to be uncovered.

Although the UK is not generally known for its sun and sands, this vast stretch of coastline offers a veritable medley of Caribbean -blue waters, swathes of golden beaches and pretty anchorage spots nestled in scalloped harbors, where guests can get ashore and enjoy meandering through cobbled streets and tiny lanes overlooked by characterful cottages and convivial pubs. Due to its popularity the region also offers plentiful marinas with excellent facilities, as well as a gateway to some of the best sailing in the world.

Another popular yacht charter itinerary is around the west coast of Scotland, popular for its bevy of wild and uninhabited islands, ancient settlements and astonishingly rich wildlife. Tourism in this region has blossomed in recent years, with superyachts jumping on the bandwagon. There are plenty of itineraries tailor-made for whisky aficionados, where stops incorporate world-famous distilleries and fine dining experiences, along with a few rounds of golf at some of the world’s leading golf courses.

Due to its central location within the region, charter itineraries can start in England’s capital city, embarking along the Thames and taking in the sights as the yacht cruises past London’s famous landmarks. Yacht charters can choose to head north along the UK’s rugged east coast with stops at Whitby, made famous as the setting in Bram Stoker’s acclaimed vampire novel, and the breathtaking Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve near Northumberland. Alternatively, yacht charters can make a beeline southwards to cruise along the UK’s popular south coast, either on its own, or inclusive of the spectacular Channel Islands, including Jersey and Guernsey, and the Scilly Isles.

The United Kingdom abounds in nature and spectacular wildlife no matter where you cruise, and there are myriad pretty anchorages where you can drop anchor and enjoy the stunning views. Outside of the south coast, there’s not a huge array of marinas, so it’s well worth organizing your trip around any nights you and your guests wish to spend in a slip.

The United Kingdom generally enjoys a temperate maritime climate thanks to the Gulf Stream bringing warming winds across the Atlantic Ocean, with the best months to charter being through the high summer months of June to early September, although naturally the climate is slightly cooler further north.

Encompassing scenic beauty, charming fishing ports and seductive wind-swept isles, the UK offers up an astonishing array of splendid destinations, whether you’re keen on exploring the nation’s rich cultural heritage, want to experience the adrenaline of Cowes Week regatta or simply want to find your own idyllic haven in amongst the numerous isles peppered around it’s coastline, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.

The United Kingdom, made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, is an island nation in the Northwest of Europe that has a long history with sailing and yachting and is the perfect location to charter a yacht and experience the seas. Famous for tea and biscuits, being the birthplace of Shakespeare and the Beatles, there is much more to the United Kingdom than the red telephone boxes and double-decker buses we see on London postcards. With Southampton having one of the largest boat shows in Europe, the Southampton Boat Show, and Scotland having many islands and hundreds of kilometres of coastline, naturally you don't have to look far for a boat rental in the United Kingdom.

What type of boat is best for boat hire in the United Kingdom?

Ideal for a leisurely and eco-friendly experience, sailboats are perfect for those seeking a serene journey along the picturesque coasts of the United Kingdom. With a typical capacity ranging from 4 to 8 passengers, these vessels offer an intimate setting for a sailing adventure, featuring cozy cabins for a comfortable onboard experience.

For those who prefer speed and flexibility, motorboats are a popular choice for boat hire in the UK. With capacities ranging from 6 to 12 passengers, motorboats provide a thrilling option for exploring the waterways. These vessels are equipped with ample cabin space, ensuring a comfortable ride and often accommodating small groups or families looking to explore the scenic rivers and lakes.

A unique and popular choice for canal exploration, houseboats are specially designed for navigating the intricate water networks of the UK. Typically, accommodating 2 to 6 passengers, these boats offer a cosy and intimate cabin space, allowing travellers to enjoy a relaxed and picturesque journey through the charming canals and countryside.

How much does it cost for boat hire in the United Kingdom?

  • Port/Marina Rented From: Prices may differ depending on the location and popularity of the port or marina. Coastal or tourist-heavy areas may have higher rental costs.
  • With or Without Skipper: Renting with a skipper or captain generally incurs an additional cost, but it offers a more relaxed experience for those without boating expertise.
  • Extras (Equipment, Crew, etc.): Additional expenses may include equipment like snorkelling gear, fishing equipment, or the hiring of additional crew members for larger vessels, impacting the overall cost.

Sailboat Prices start from £51 per day / £357 per week

Motorboat Prices start from £179 per day / £1,253 per week

RIB Prices start from £358 per day / £2,506 per week

Catamaran Prices start from £1,023 per day / £7,161 per week

Houseboat Prices start from £207 per day / £1,449 per week

Yacht Prices start from £2,151 per day / £14,357 per week

What is included in the cost?

Yacht charters in the UK vary considerably in boat type, length of time and price of the charter. For those who have a sailing licence, bareboat charters are available and for those who don't then you can hire a yacht that comes with a skipper and even a crew. It is completely normal to hire a boat through Click&Boat that includes a captain to tour you through the waters, and lots of our listings include added or optional extras too. From snorkelling and diving equipment to jet-skis and wakeboards.

What season is the best for yacht charter in the United Kingdom?

The UK is somewhere that you can visit all year round due to its moderate weather that is not extreme in either summer or winter. The UK has a reputation for being miserable and wet all the time, but this is somewhat a myth. No, the UK does not get incredibly hot and sunny weather, but it isn't always raining, and it is never shockingly cold either. However, the weather is definitely temperamental. It can be sunny one second and raining the next, so make sure you pack an anorak! If you prepare for the weather, then it definitely will not ruin your trip.

As always with chartering a boat, you should bring a windproof and waterproof jacket and things to keep you warm at night when temperatures drop. And even during the colder weather, the beautiful British landscapes can be even more appealing when coated in snow - so photogenic! So do not worry about when is the best time to visit the United Kingdom and instead focus on how you are going to spend your time there!

Where to hire a boat in the United Kingdom?

The coastline of Great Britain is more than 31,000 kilometres long, and so there is no shortage of choice when it comes to deciding where to begin your sailing journey. You will find most of the UK's busiest and most popular marinas on the south coast including Port Hamble Marina, Gosport Marina , and O cean Village Marina in Southampton. If you are beginning a few days or week long sailing journey, then departing from here is highly recommended. You can easily visit the Isle of White, the Jurassic Coast or embark on a more adventurous journey to France and down to Spain or Portugal.

Where to sail in the United Kingdom?

Off the south coast of England, you will find many incredible sights of natural beauty that you can enjoy from the comfort of your boat rental. Begin with a cruise down the Jurassic coast enjoying the naturally incredible landscape and head to Durdle Door. Durdle Door is a natural arch carved out of the limestone cliffs over many years. It has a really nice beach too and is really popular with both domestic and international tourists. Just a couple of minutes up the coast is Lulworth cove - a beautiful beach and cove with amazing waters to swim in due to the sea's narrow entrance to the cove.

If you're interested in sailing during Cowes Week , then the Isle of Wight is a great place to start. Cowes Week is the UK's oldest and largest sailing regatta, held annually in early August. It's an exciting event where you can see hundreds of boats of different shapes and sizes taking part in the race. The Channel Islands, located just off the south coast, are also a great place to explore by boat.

If you are flying from outside the UK for your sailing holiday here then it is worth knowing that it is very easy to get to big cities like London from Southampton by train which should take no more than 2 hours.

Hire a boat with or without a skipper?

Renting a boat with a skipper ensures safety, as they are trained professionals who have experience navigating the waters and are knowledgeable about the local regulations. Moreover, having a skipper on board means that customers can sit back and relax, without having to worry about navigating the boat themselves.

Skippers often possess extensive knowledge of the best scenic routes, hidden gems, and optimal spots for various activities, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the boating excursion.

Renting a boat without a skipper can be more cost-effective, but there are certain conditions and requirements that need to be met. Sailors need to have a valid boating licence and have good knowledge and experience in navigating the waters. You also need to be aware of any local regulations and restrictions, such as speed limits and no-go zones.

Yacht Charter UK

Begin planning your voyage.

If you’re looking for a sailing holiday as a family or group of friends then we can help. The East Coast of England provides some of the best sailing available in the UK, coupled with the kindest that England can offer in the way of weather. Our cruising area is particularly beautiful with saltmarsh and seal colonies to explore, the rolling hills of the rivers Stour and Orwell plus the challenge of the River Deben. There is lots to see and with prices starting at just £45 per person per day for a week’s sailing holiday in August, what could be better? We have two types of vessel available for both bareboat and skippered charter. For smaller groups we have the Beneteau 35 and, for larger groups, we have the well respected Sigma 38 cruiser racer. Located in the picturesque and renowned sailing centre of Burnham on Crouch, we are less than an hour from London’s Liverpool Street Station – there are no travel issues of getting to airports, queuing for passport control, transfers and the like which may be experienced for sailing holidays abroad. You can drive and park without cost in the marina car park and, if coming by train, we will collect you. Your comfortable vessel will be waiting for you with a full fuel tank and basic provisions (unless you give us a shopping list and then Sainsbury will deliver your order to the boat)! All the boats have three sleeping cabins and are coded for 6 or 9 people. Fully equipped for cruising and exceeding the standards normally associated with a charter vessel, these yachts can also take you across the Channel to France or Holland. If you decide to charter, particularly for a foreign trip, we recommend taking out specialist sailing travel insurance such as with Haven Knox Johnson .   . For longer charter periods it is great for 4 of you using 2 cabins leaving one for the Skipper / First mate use. For skippered charter you decide how many are aboard.

UK Sailing Skills – or Relaxation Holiday – Whatever You Want:

The UK sailing holiday is suitable for novices and first timers as well as those with more sailing experience.

Everyone gets to steer

We regularly get absolute beginners on board where we teach people to take part as an active member of the crew, we get people just wanting time afloat to relax or some wanting to ‘refresh’ their skills having done a Day Skipper course with further aims and aspirations.

Osbourne Bay

Regularly we get those wanting to gain experience and practice for their flotilla holiday right through to Yachtmaster standard coming on board – everyone takes something away with them. Those that want to kick back and relax can do just that! The bear minimum we require from you is that the Skipper just needs one person to step ashore with a rope when mooring up and the occasional hand steering but generally people take a more active role than that! You do not have to be involved in teaching if you do not want and we will fit in with your requirements. If you want the Skipper to simply sail you around visiting places of interest for a holiday afloat, we can do that! However, if there are particular sailing skills that you would like to practice, we will do our best to accommodate you.

Teaching Example: Everyone gets ‘hands on’ experience during the weekend in the running of the boat and a chance to helm. Simply do as much or as little as you like. Build up some experience…ask questions and learn… and we can teach you elements that you may be weak in, coach and inform you. Couple the above with good company, good food and a convivial atmosphere on board and life is good!

Family Sailing Holiday

Beginners could be taught specific rope work skills and useful tips for when ‘short-handed’ if a couple were to be going on Flotilla where advanced sailors may be asked to moor or leave a mooring under sail, practice using an asymmetric spinnaker, focus upon sail trim.

As well as the physical sailing aspects we usually include reefing whilst sailing, heave to, MOB etc, you may do some pilotage and we work on buoyage and light recognition for port entries, mooring and anchoring techniques – and then the ‘easy methods’ that our Skippers utilise in everyday sailing.

For longer passages you will be required to spend time on the helm and possibly ‘stand a watch’ depending upon your level of competency.

Provisioning: You have a choice where we provision for you – or you provision for yourself. Everybody on board has to help with galley and boat duties. It is part of learning how to run your boat. If you specifically wish to have a First Mate aboard to help run the boat and cook we will assess Government guidelines in force at the time and attempt to allocate someone at additional cost. Please ask.

Boat Salad

You Do It: You can do your own provisioning / catering and therefore budget according to your groups numbers / needs. We can give advice on catering if you are new to yachting and the ‘click and collect’ at Tesco is 5 minutes from the marina means you can order beforehand and collect if your travel plans are a bit ‘fluid’ or order for delivery if you know that you will be at the marina on time. Remember to add ice for your G&T’s! Please include catering for the Skipper.

Yachtforce Cruising Chute

We Do It: We will provision the boat for the duration of the charter but a minimum of 1 evening meal is to be taken ashore / bought in at a local hostelry at own cost during the charter period. All food left over at the end of the charter stays on the boat and is returned to our stores.

Your Skipper / Crew: The Skipper is an integral part of your sailing trip and our Crew are chosen for their easy manner, seamanship skills, love of teaching and sharing their passion of sailing with others.

If required the skipper / crew can sleep off the boat, he would have an aft cabin for sole occupancy when sleeping aboard. The B&B cost for the skipper accommodation is paid for in addition to the charter fee. Estimate a min £95 per night when away from home port.

Please also provision for the skipper whilst aboard. You do not have to have the Skipper / Crew accompany you for a night out but please allow £25 for him to eat an evening meal and have a beer off the boat. For charters of more than 7 days a Skipper must be allowed 1 day off from sailing so the boat will be moored in port so that you can explore locally and make your own arrangements for catering.

Excellent Adult Yachtforce Wet Weather Gear Supplied

What to Bring: Please – everything in a soft squash’ able bag. No wheels or cases! Waterproofs / non marking soft soled shoes – deck shoes / boots (Waterproofs available to hire) Layered clothing, shorts, tee shirt, sweatshirt etc Hat / cap / sailing gloves – to protect your hands from rope Sunglasses /sun cream (sunglass retainers) Reading glasses (spares) Seasickness remedy – if you suffer – Stugeron tablets are good Towel / small wash kit / pillow / sleeping bag Child lifejackets (we supply adult – we do have a couple of youngster ones that you may borrow) Child Waterproofs (suggest light weight walking waterproofs) Personal medication / favourite tipple A few quid out for trips ashore Sense of humour Passport (where appropriate) Any latest Government personal required paperwork to do with Covid19

Yachtforce Spinnaker

Covid 19 Restrictions:

We have to comply with the govt latest advice and requirements. We will make sure that every boat is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between charters. With regard what can be achieved with ‘Skippered Charter’ and when will depend upon what policy the Government decides to impose whether this be a ‘bubble network’ or ‘self isolation’ after any different parties come into contact. At the present time we do know that any number from 2 households can come together.

Please bear in mind that we will do our best to keep you and your family / group safe but we can only go with the advice / directives that we are given and our resulting risk assessment and operating policies that we will then enforce. To that end we have come up with a flexible booking policy and we are taking bookings for events from July 4th on wards.

Catered With Skipper & Mate An example price  of a 9 berth, 37 foot yacht with Skipper / First Mate with catering for a max of 5  persons (1 evening meal taken ashore at own cost for 2 or more day events) in non- race / regatta periods would be:

Extras: Wet weather gear / fuel / mooring fees / outboard / spinnaker /  any shore-side accommodation required for Skipper / First Mate (if you want sole occupancy) – please see extras at bottom of bare boat charter page.  Optional Extras

Vik & Chris

Vikki / Chris – First Mates that can cook!

If requested we will attempt to put a First Mate aboard charters to help with the galley duties and running of the boat but we must abide by Government restrictions at all times. We only have a limited number of First Mates and we must be aware of health & safety plus family circumstances during restrictions so we cannot guarantee this additional member of crew.
