Top 12 UK Harbours

Here’s our list of the top 12 harbours, anchorages and marinas not to miss around our shores.

Tobermory

This is without doubt the prettiest town on the west coast of Scotland. And it has one of the best harbours, which was known long before the town itself was built. Murdoch Mackenzie, an Orcadian, produced the first charts of the west coast, and the first sailing directions in 1776, when he wrote that Tobermory bay was “a very fine place for large ships; for it is sheltered from all winds, the ground good, and the depth moderate”. Now there are pontoons and mooring buoys, as well as the anchorage.

Titanic Museum, Belfast

Belfast, specifically the Abercorn Basin Marina right in the centre of town, is next to the Titanic Experience, opened in 2012. It may seem odd to celebrate a disaster, but the museum is as much about the extraordinary effort that was made by Harland and Wolff to build the ship, how so many thousands of men were involved (3,000 hammered in 3 million rivets between them), how many eggs it carried on its first and final voyage (40,000!), who was on board, and so on.

3. Caernarfon

Canaervon

There are many castles around our coast but there are not many you can stop really close to. Here is a really spectacular one. You can take the ground underneath its walls as Libby Purves and her family did in 1988 in her round-UK book One Summer’s Grace . Today most tie up to a pontoon in the adjacent Victoria Dock Marina, which is accessible at HW+/-2. Mind you, to get there one has to deal with the notorious Swellies rocks in the Menai Strait, which, despite their reputation, are no big deal.

4. Isles of Scilly

Tresco, Scilly

Each island is different. St Mary’s is rather touristy and maybe somewhat dull with exposed moorings. Tresco is upmarket with a shop that seems like an offshoot of Fortnum and Mason, but it has tremendous gardens well worth the £12 entrance fee. St Agnes is a bit alternative and has great ice-creams. There are visitor moorings at St Mary’s, St Martin’s, and in Old and New Grimsby Sounds. See more on ST ‘s trip to Scilly here .

5. Plymouth

Plymouth Sound

Famed for the Hoe, Drake, the Mayflower and – still – the British Navy. Full of maritime history and an important place to see. For the prettiest sights, stick to the coast and walk all the way round from the Barbican with its buzzing cafes and bars via the Hoe to the beautifully restored and revitalised Royal William Yard. See our Gull’s Eye feature on Mayflower Marina .

6. Weymouth

Weymouth

You have to visit at least one classic British seaside town with that bewitching and evocative combination of an active harbour with pontoons for visiting yachts, a safe and extensive town beach with Punch and Judy shows and candy floss, good pubs, restaurants and trippers. If you can, visit the Royal Dorset Yacht Club – full of fascinating maritime history.

7. Lymington

Lymington

One of the quintessential British harbour towns, Lymington offers two well-protected marinas, and makes a superb base for exploring the sheltered Solent by boat, or the New Forest by land. The cobbled town quay and steep High Street still offer plenty of independent shops and fine, old pubs.

Tower Bridge, London

You can sail right up to Tower Bridge although you do have to dodge the many tourist boats and put up with the chop produced by their wakes. Of course, you have to take the tide up and later back down again, as sailors have done for centuries, but that is no problem in one six-hour tide if you get a move on under engine if necessary.

9. Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells-next-the-Sea

The harbourmaster picks you up on his camera as you arrive at the fairway buoy and then talks you up the buoyed channel which completely dries out at low tide (“Going a bit too far to port, mate”). Once in the pool you are right in among the lovely old buildings, the shops and pubs and the children crabbing.

Whitby

One of the few easy-to-enter harbours on the east coast between the Humber and the Forth. But as well as being a fascinating place to stop over, there is the Dracula connection, the Captain Cook connection, a supermarket right next to the marina, St Mary’s church up the 199 steps on the hill next to the spooky ruined abbey, pubs, and a famous chippy.

Mousa

A small uninhabited island in the Shetlands which most people have probably never heard of. However, it has the best preserved Iron Age (about 1000BC) broch in the UK, right next to the anchorage.

12. North Ronaldsay, Orkney

North Ronaldsay

You can get a really interesting guided tour to the very top of the tallest land-based lighthouse in the UK – by the last lighthouse keeper no less.

Many tours include visits to notable sailing vessels, like those that are part of the Maritime Museum or USS Midway Museum . Ride in Style on the 13 Best Boat Tours & Bay Cruises

Cruises and other tours through the harbor and San Diego Bay are a great way to get your bearings around the city, especially if you want to learn more about the area.

Many tours have an educational aspect, focusing on the area’s naval history, while others provide soothing luxury experiences, engaging wildlife expeditions, or fast-paced thrill rides.

Sunset Harbor Cruise in San Diego Bay

1) San Diego: Harbor Cruise

Tour around the beautiful sights of San Diego Bay on the San Diego: Harbor Cruise , which offers all tour-goers splendid views of some of the city’s best coastal sights. These include notable locations like the Midway Aircraft Carrier that now serves as the USS Midway Museum , Coronado Bridge, and a unique view of Downtown San Diego from a distance.

This is an incredible way to explore the city and familiarize yourself with some of its top locations and best beaches so you can better explore them on foot later.

The Harbor Cruise tour lasts for about 1-2 hours, and it’s led by a live tour guide who provides informative voiceover commentary of the various stops on the trip. The tour guide can also point out marine life like sea lions, seals, and the occasional whales and dolphins that are often spotted in the bay.

Sail in comfort on a luxury, modern yacht that includes three levels of indoor and outdoor seating areas. As you take in the view, you can also enjoy the complimentary snack bar, water, and soda, with beer, wine, and cocktails available to purchase.

San Diego SEAL Tour on Land

2) 90-Minute San Diego SEAL Tour

SEAL tours are certainly one of the most unique ways to take a harbor cruise, as you won’t just travel by sea, but also by land as well!

The 90-Minute San Diego SEAL Tour hits all the best stops along the Embarcadero and in the San Diego Bay itself too. This is thanks to the unique design of the SEAL tours’ signature vehicles, Hydra-Terras, which are boats with wheels that can carry passengers down the road just as easily as they can ferry you out to sea.

The “SEAL” in the name of the tour refers to “sea and land,” and you’re certain to see all the best sights of each. This is a great tour for learning about San Diego’s significant military history, including its use as a military base through the years, as well as the involvement of ships like the USS Midway in war efforts. In the bay, you’ll see real Navy ships, fishing vessels, and tugboats, offering a truly one-of-a-kind look at the very same historic vessels from the stories told by your live tour guide.

SEAL Tours are family-friendly, and suitable for history and military enthusiasts of all ages.

4) Sights & Sips 2-Hour Sunset Cruise on San Diego Bay

While many visitors to San Diego have the chance to watch an ocean sunset on the beach or from the comfort of their hotel room, very few people get to truly experience that sunset by sailing on the bay as the sky starts to darken. You can do exactly that on the Sights & Sips 2-Hour Sunset Cruise on San Diego Bay , which offers an unparalleled happy hour experience!

See landmarks like the USS Midway , Coronado Bridge, and Seaport Village like never before as you take in the view during sunset. Relax with a cocktail on deck as you look out over the waves, then relax and refresh with complimentary appetizers and on-board entertainment.

This 2-hour cruise includes access to a fully-stocked no-host bar with seasonal cocktail specials. Due to the presence of alcohol, the Sights & Sips Sunset Cruise isn’t particularly family-friendly, though it’s a great way to liven up an evening during a business trip, couples’ vacation, or ladies’ weekend. This tour is actually featured in the article Best 14 Places to Watch the Sunset in San Diego .

Sunset on San Diego Bay

5) San Diego: Harbor Sightseeing Cruise

Points of interest on the tour include Seaport Village , Point Loma , the Cabrillo National Monument , and Coronado Island . Take a 1-hour cruise to the North Harbor or South Harbor, which offer their own unique destinations, or take the 2-hour cruise which lets you see everything!

North Harbor sights include the North Island Naval Air Station, Harbor Island, Shelter Island, and multiple historic ships that are part of the Maritime Museum , while the route through the South Harbor includes the USS Midway, the U.S. Navy Surface Fleet, the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, and Coronado Bridge.

In addition to historic military sights, look for wildlife native to the bay, such as seals, sea lions, pelicans, and blue herons.

Whale and Dolphin Watching Cruise Spots a Gray Whale

6) San Diego: Whale and Dolphin Watching Cruise

Nature lovers are sure to enjoy the San Diego: Whale and Dolphin Watching Cruise , where you’ll have the chance to see these incredible creatures during their peak migration times. This is a great family-friendly activity that kids love, since it offers a unique view into the natural habitats of animals you’d otherwise only get to see at the Sea Life Aquarium or SeaWorld San Diego .

The migration season for gray whales lasts from winter to spring, as the whales move south from the coast of Alaska down to Baja California to calve in warmer lagoons. Meanwhile, tour-goers who book tickets in the summer will have the chance to see blue whales, which can frequently be spotted feeding off the California coast.

Other species often spotted on the cruise include fin, minke, and humpback whales, as well as multiple species of dolphins such as common, pacific, Risso’s, white-sided, and bottlenose varieties.

Tours typically last about 3.5 to 4 hours. They are led by knowledgeable whalers and captains who know where to find not only whales and dolphins, but also sea lions, sunfish, pelicans, gulls, herons, and terns.

San Diego Champagne Brunch Cruise

7) Champagne Brunch Cruise in San Diego

Embark on the ultimate relaxing experience when you book your tickets to the Champagne Brunch Cruise in San Diego !

Not only do you get to enjoy the sensations of the sea breeze in your hair and sun on your face as you cruise around the harbor, you also get to do it in style and comfort while relaxing with a few glasses of champagne and good company.

This 2-hour yacht cruise allows groups to sit at their own private tables with free-flowing champagne or sparkling cider as a non-alcoholic option, all while taking in the sights and listening to a live narration that reveals interesting, behind-the-scenes information about landmarks around the bay. Other alcoholic drinks are available to purchase from the bar during the tour.

In addition to the champagne, guests are also invited to dine on a number of seasonal dishes served in a buffet style. Offerings include a carving station, multiple breakfast and lunch options, pastries, salads, seafood, and a decadent dessert to top off the afternoon. Soothing music completes the ambiance and ensures you’ll experience total relaxation during the cruise.

Classic Yacht Sailing Experience in San Diego Bay

8) San Diego: Classic Yacht Sailing Experience

Get a taste of the past on the San Diego: Classic Yacht Sailing Experience , where you’ll get to ride in a sailing yacht modeled off ships from the early 1900s.

Tours last 2.5 hours and allow tour-goers to check out nearby landmarks along the coast and in the water, like the USS Midway naval ship . You’ll even have a chance to try your hand at steering the boat yourself!

Tours embark at either midday or sunset depending on your booking preferences, and you can travel privately or share the vessel with other vacationers. The cruise route begins at the Sunset Resort Marina and continues on to the Maritime Museum and Old Point Loma Lighthouse in Cabrillo National Monument .

Note that sailboats have a maximum capacity of up to six people, so the activity is best suited for smaller groups. However, this is a great attraction for families, as adults can relax and soak in the laid-back ocean vibes while kids have fun spotting local wildlife like dolphins, herons, pelicans, and sea lions.

Patriot Jet Boat Thrill Ride in San Diego Bay

9) San Diego: Patriot Jet Boat Thrill Ride

If you’re craving a more adventurous way to explore the bay, try the high-octane thrills of the San Diego: Patriot Jet Boat Thrill Ride .

During the tour, you’ll ride on an open-air jet boat at breakneck speeds for 30 minutes of fast-paced fun, all while rock music and the salty spray of ocean water against the boat set the scene to perfectly mimic a bombastic action movie. This experience is featured in the Unique Things to Do in San Diego .

While the sheer speed of the jet boat is more than enough reason to give this tour a try, traveling at up to 50 miles per hour and taking 360-degree turns white knuckled is only half the appeal. You’ll also get to see the sights of the bay in a totally unique way. These sights include multiple naval vessels like the Star of India, the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier , and the fleets on display at the Maritime Museum . You’ll also pass by the Coronado Bridge and North Island Naval Air Station.

The San Diego: Patriot Jet Boat Thrill Ride is led by an instructor who ensures guest safety during the experience. All minors must be accompanied by an adult, and ponchos are provided, though you should expect to get wet.

Drive Your Own Speed Boat in San Diego Bay

10) San Diego: Drive Your Own Speed Boat 2-Hour Tour

Are you seeking a more private thrill ride experience in the bay that puts you in the driver’s seat? If so, the San Diego: Drive Your Own Speed Boat 2-Hour Tour is for you!

This tour offers the unique experience of letting you drive around the San Diego Bay in your own speedboat built for two, so it’s very popular with couples and other pairs looking for an adventurous way to explore.

In addition to driving your own speedboat, you’ll also have the benefit of a live guide leading you through the bay in their own speedboat and providing narration through a 2-way communication device. Learn about places of interest like the USS Midway , the San Diego Maritime Museum , and multiple spots along the coast and the Embarcadero . Unlike many other tours, your guide is far from stuffy; they’ll provide witty commentary and interesting stories with a humorous twist while still maintaining the high energy of the thrill ride.

Tours include a safety briefing and instructions on driving the speed boat, as well as a life jacket. Keep a lookout for local wildlife like sea lions and pelicans which frequently make their homes along the shore.

Mission Bay Private Sun Cruiser Duffy Boat Rental

11) San Diego: Private Sun Cruiser Duffy Boat Rental on Mission Bay

While many harbor cruises pack dozens of people onto a larger boat, you can have a more personalized, private experience when you rent your own duffy boat to take out onto the harbor.

With the San Diego: Private Sun Cruiser Duffy Boat Rental , you and your group can relax in the comfort and privacy of this covered passenger boat, with rentals of either 90 minutes or 3 hours. Enjoy the scenery, and keep your eyes peeled for sea lions and seals.

Duffy boats can comfortably fit a maximum of 10 people, making them a perfect family-friendly choice that’s also suitable for small business groups and weekend trips with friends. You’ll have the opportunity to be your own captain, so you can enjoy Mission Bay at your own pace and also bring along snacks and drinks for a picnic lunch on the waves. Best of all, you do not need a boating license to rent a duffy boat, and piloting them is about as easy as driving a golf cart!

All sun cruises come equipped with a Bluetooth system, a covered seating area in case of rain, tables, pillows, and an ice cooler.

Having Fun with Eco Pedal Boat Rental in San Diego Bay

12) San Diego Bay: Eco-Pedal Boat Rental

Boat rentals last for an hour and come with operating instructions and a map of the bay’s landmarks. You can choose where you want to go, traveling between Harbor Island, Liberty Station , and America's Cup Harbor, all while seeking out local wildlife like seabirds and sea lions.

Tips for Planning & Preparing Before Your San Diego Bay and Harbor Cruise

Ensure your cruise goes off without a hitch with these helpful tips and important things to know before you book an excursion.

Watch the Weather

Be sure to check the weather leading up to your trip, and keep an eye out for updates from the tour company. While some ships have covers to block out a drizzle and can thus operate rain or shine, others may only run when the weather is nice.

While San Diego enjoys warm weather year-round , there are always a few rainy days, so check each cruise for information about their rescheduling or refunding policies in the case of inclement weather.

Check the Suggested Dress Code

Some, but not all, harbor cruises have a suggested dress code for guests. While these dress codes typically aren’t strict, you’ll want to check them before you arrive so you aren’t too over- or underdressed for your cruise.

Remember that the bay can be fairly cool even on sunny days since there are no buildings to block the wind, so you’ll want to dress in layers with a warm overcoat or jacket.

Watch Out for Limited Wheelchair Accessibility

Some harbor cruises exclusively offer seating on the main deck of the ship, which may only be accessible by staircase or ladder. Other tours have dedicated seats that are accessible for anyone using a mobility device.

Be sure to double check with the tour company prior to booking your ticket if you need accessible accommodations.

Passenger river transportation is being actively revived in Moscow. Already in June, for the first time in 17 years, the authorities promise to launch river buses. Maybe that's why the idea of owning a yacht is increasingly coming up among wealthy Muscovites, and there are more and more yachtsmen who would like to live close to the place of attraction of like-minded people. Next to the yacht clubs there are 21 projects in the primary market of Moscow. More than half of these projects are premium. The experts of the Elitnoye.ru portal, using the data of the Metrium company, decided to talk about the leading metropolitan centers of yachting and tourism, as well as about the premium-class complexes adjacent to them.

The 5 best nyc dinner cruises for food & views.

These dinner cruises provide some of the best views of Manhattan.

The Best NYC Dinner Cruises

Friends enjoying a La Barca Cantina dinner cruise.

Courtesy of La Barca Cantina

When you're strolling the streets of Manhattan, it can be difficult to grasp the magnitude of the city, with its skyscrapers and densely packed landmarks. The solution? A boat ride. A breezy sail in New York Harbor can feature everything from an elegant dinner to a live jazz band to tacos and tequila. Read on to discover the top-rated New York City dinner cruise options as determined by travel expert opinion and recent reviews.

City Cruises New York Bateaux Premier Dinner Cruise

Price: From $144 Duration: 3 hours Standout perk: This all-glass boat delivers panoramic skyline views.

Climbing aboard the Bateaux feels like stepping into a greenhouse, with its glass-enclosed structure and water views in every direction. There are no bad seats on this boat, but as an upgrade you can reserve a window table for the best views of the Hudson River, the East River and the New York Harbor. This cruise is a match for anyone seeking elegance: The tables are covered in crisp white cloths, wine and cocktails are served in sparkling glasses, and a three-course a la carte dinner is served at a relaxed pace (no buffet here).

The Bateaux cruise is an experience to get dressed up for, where the dress code is semi-formal and dinner is accompanied by live music. The sunset can provide the perfect backdrop for pictures, and don't forget to snap a shot of the Statue of Liberty . Children younger than 6 are not permitted on this cruise, so expect a polished, for-adults atmosphere complete with creative cocktails and dancing under the stars. The Bateaux has rightfully earned a reputation for its fresh food; this three-course, plated menu includes several tempting a la carte options from a ravioli starter with crispy pancetta to osso bucco with cauliflower polenta.

City Cruises New York Signature Dinner Cruise

Price: From $109 Duration: 2.5 hours Standout perk: A live DJ gives this dinner cruise an extra dose of atmosphere.

Looking for a casual night of dining and dancing with the addition of a skyline backdrop? This dinner cruise offers just that. Set sail from Chelsea Piers in a climate-controlled boat along the Hudson and East rivers, admiring New York City landmarks like the Empire State Building . For dinner, indulge in a chef-prepared buffet with a wide range of options from Greek salad to oven-roasted salmon with miso to Caribbean jerk braised pork. If you're bringing a sweet tooth on board, be sure to check out the ample dessert station.

After snapping some pictures on the open-air deck, return to the cabin for cocktails from the cash bar, interactive games and upbeat music from the onboard DJ.

Those traveling with young kids will be pleased to know that infants younger than 3 cruise free – so feel free to bring your little ones along to enjoy the experience with you.

La Barca Cantina

La Barca Cantina dinner cruise with lights on boat at night.

Price: Varies Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: You'll find an extensive tequila and mezcal list on board to accompany the Mexican fare.

One criticism of New York dinner cruises is that they don't offer good value for money, but the "taco boat" challenges that critique with ceviche, tacos, churros, cocktails and skyline views for an affordable price. Climb aboard a yacht at Pier 81 to experience a youthful, modern interpretation of a dinner cruise – think: low lighting, couches for lounging and three bars, complete with Latin pop, salsa and dance music playing in the background. Raise a glass while the yacht sails south on the Hudson River to check out world-famous Manhattan skyline views.

La Barca Cantina also offers a bottomless brunch cruise with a DJ, as well as special events.

Live jazz trio performing for the Classic Harbor Line NYC Evening Jazz Cruise on the Manhattan II yacht in the summer.

Price: From $108 Duration: 1.5 hours Standout perk: A jazz trio typically featuring a sax, keyboard and drums plays live on board.

Listen to jazz standards aboard a 1920s-style yacht with this fun sightseeing cruise departing from Pier 62 in Chelsea Piers. Choose between kicking back in the climate-controlled cabin or on the open-air deck throughout this evening cruise, which includes views of Manhattan landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Live music is played outside on the deck or inside the salon, depending on the season (and the boat, Manhattan or Manhattan II).

While this cruise doesn't offer dinner, one complimentary alcoholic beverage is included, and a cash bar offers additional drinks and snacks. Listen to music by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and more as you sail past the twinkling Manhattan skyline. Those traveling in a group should keep in mind: Tickets are slightly discounted for groups of 4 to 16.

Circle Line New York City Harbor Lights Cruise

Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise at night with New York City buildings in the background.

Courtesy of Circle Line

Price: From $54 Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: This no-fuss, excellent-value cruise option has drinks and snacks available for purchase on board.

When you're craving panoramic views rather than a three-course meal, choose the Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise departing from Pier 83. This sightseeing sailing delivers an up-close experience of the Manhattan skyline lights coming to life, while cruising past landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building . A live guide provides narration and historical context for what you're seeing. As the sun sets behind New Jersey, watch the glow of the sinking sun reflect in the windows of skyscrapers.

Food from the onboard cafe – like salads, sandwiches and snacks – as well as beer, wine and cocktails at the bar are available for purchase. This is an ideal situation for groups with varying levels of hunger and thirst. Sit alfresco in the breeze or indoors in the climate-controlled cabin – it's up to you.

Non-English-speaking guests can download the Circle Line app for narration available in several languages; just be sure to bring your own headset.

All aboard! 7 best boating vacations along the East Coast

Boat travelers can take in sunsets over the National Harbor marina

It's no secret that summer travel in 2024 will be hot. Even with rising prices and bookings, Americans still want experiences this summer. For some travelers, this means taking more than their suitcases on their next big trip: They're taking their boats.

Here's why boat ownership is skyrocketing and the best places for boating vacations this summer.

Why do people go boating?

People go boating because the community is tight-knit, and fellow travelers hop aboard to forge a new friendship or are open to lending a hand with a repair. While some larger boats have accommodations, many tourist destinations boast fabulous hotels and marinas with daily rental rates. This makes it easy to take even small pleasure crafts, like pontoon boats and speedboats, along for a boating vacation.

Advertisement Advertisement

If you've never traveled with your boat, there are some considerations to think about. State boating laws and regulations vary, so checking your destination's guidelines before embarking on a boat vacation is essential. For example, children under 18 can drive boats in some states, but the policies vary widely.

Boaters also should be aware of best green boating practices when traveling. The Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers campaign created guidelines for safely drying and cleaning boats' hulls between destinations.

If you want to kick back with a boat drink and watch the sunset over the starboard side, check out this list of some of the best places to take your boat on vacation along the East Coast.

Murrells Inlet, South Carolina

Murrells Inlet has a variety of marina options for vacationing with your boat

While nearby Myrtle Beach is famous for spring break trips and family fun, Murrells Inlet's slower pace is perfect for taking in some #boatlife while on vacation.

A small waterfront fishing town located at the south end of the Grand Strand, with a historic district listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Murrells Inlet is the perfect compromise for travelers who want to be near the beach but own smaller boats that can't handle ocean waves.

Marlin Quay can handle boats up to 80 feet long and has daily rental slips available. Book well before the summer season to secure a spot for your boat during your trip. The inlet waters are calm and perfect for fishing and water sports. Tourists can rent paddle boats, kayaks, and jet skis at Express Watersports to add more marine fun to their trip.

Age limit: In South Carolina, individuals born after July 1, 2007, must take an online boating test .

Portland, Maine

Portland is designed for relaxing New England boating vacations

Portland, Maine , is home to charming boutique hotels and many award-winning eateries, making it the perfect stop for a laid-back boating excursion. More than a dozen public marinas exist along Portland's coast, so there are plenty of options for boats of different sizes or travelers with specific docking needs.

Stop for dinner at Sur Lie , a James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist in 2023, or Thistle & Grouse , a downtown gastropub. Portland has that classic New England vibe that screams "boat vacation." Boating in Portland is seasonal, so it makes a great summer stop.

Age limit: Anyone born after January 1, 1999, must complete a boater safety course before cruising Maine's waters, but several online options exist.

Ocean City, Maryland

Located on a barrier island, Ocean City marinas take advantage of the quieter waters

Known for classic coastal fun along a 3-mile boardwalk, Ocean City is also perfect for family travelers with boats. The Jolly Roger amusement park juts out into the Atlantic on an iconic pier, and there's no shortage of eateries to grab a bite along the boardwalk.

There is a public boat launch at 64th Street and several marinas with daily or weekly slip rates. Since Ocean City is on a barrier island, the Isle of Wight Bay and Assawoman Bay have calm waters for smaller boats that can't handle the Atlantic's waves. The water near Ocean City is shallow, so tide charts are necessary for safe boating.

Age limit: Anyone born after July 1, 1972 , must take an online boating test before charting Maryland's waters for a boating vacation.

The Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes region of New York is a paradise for boating vacations

This collection of breathtaking lakes in western New York is rife with small hamlets and larger harbors, making it a top choice to take your boat for vacation. Comprised of 11 glacial lakes and Lake Ontario, vacationers can fish for bass, trout, and salmon in these pristine waters spanning 14 counties.

The Harbor Lights Marina in Hammondsport has gas and snacks, while Sutter's Canandaigua Marina offers gas and daily slip rentals. Choose the Finger Lakes for your boating vacation if you're seeking laid-back days without much hustle and bustle. There's plenty to do, but it's the perfect place to relax on board and soak in summer.

Age limit: New York's boating laws can be complex, so check out the guidelines before hitching up your trailer. Boaters born after January 1, 1978, need a safety certificate.

Martin County, Florida

Boating vacations in Martin County, Florida, include sunsets over the Roosevelt Bridge

Located along a quieter stretch of coast just north of South Florida's fun Space Coast (a reader-voted favorite for Best Summer Travel Destination ), Martin County is home to 10 quaint towns built around boat life. It's all centered around St. Lucie Inlet, part of one of the most biodiverse lagoon and estuary systems in the nation. Martin County is perfect for boating vacations year-round and offers a quiet setting adjacent to some of Florida's top destinations.

Pirate's Cove Resort and Marina in Port Salerno offers a full-service marina and 50 quaint rooms (each with a waterfront view). There also are chain options where guests can use rewards points, such as Marriott's Hutchinson Island Beach Resort on Hutchison Island. The hotel has a private marina and an 18-hole golf course for guests.

Age limit: Florida doesn't have a minimum age to operate a boat, but boaters must follow some requirements .

Charleston, South Carolina

Boaters can dock at The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina

This boating vacation is perfect for travelers who love history and culture. Charleston has cobblestone streets and historic plaques, so walking tours are a great way to view the region. Water taxis take guests back and forth across the harbor, a convenient way to get to dinner, even if you have your boat on hand.

At The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina , guests can sit on the wraparound front porch and take in the resort's marina and Charleston's skyline. A waterfront pool is a bonus at this grand old resort.

Age limit: In South Carolina, boaters born after July 1, 2007, must take an online boating test to drive a watercraft.

National Harbor, Maryland

The Capital Wheel overlooks the National Harbor and Washington, D.C.'s skyline

Washington, D.C., is already a top travel destination along the East Coast, but Maryland's National Harbor is the best way to take your boat on vacation to our nation's capital. Located along the Potomac River with city skyline views, it's the perfect spot to dock your boat and venture out on multiple excursions.

The Gaylord National Harbor Resort and Convention Center features a 19-story glass atrium, indoor pool, boat slips, on-site restaurants, and family entertainment options. For those who prefer a boutique hotel, the AC Hotel National Harbor is a good fit, and several other hotel chains are located right along the harbor.

There is no boat launch at National Harbor, so you'll have to park your vessel further up the Potomac or in the Chesapeake Bay. The staff at National Harbor Marina suggests using Snag a Slip to book dock space for your trip.

Age limit: Like Ocean City, boaters born after 1972 must take an online boating test .

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.

LADY KATHRYN V

Integrity and the relentless pursuit of the deal defines Moran Yacht & Ship - I am grateful that you were on this journey with me. This magical machine KISMET is the second yacht I’ve had built with Moran Yacht & Ship. KISMET has brought joy, hope, and the gift of discovery to many lives - including my own. You have made this world a better place! Owner, KISMET
By way of background, my business interests include controlling stakes in 3 publicly traded companies which operate vessels in the 500 to 5000dwt range. On average, one new vessel a year would be added to the fleet. As a result, I have access to in-house marine architects, engineers and construction supervisors. Consequently, when I decided to build my first large motor yacht, I did not feel I needed the services of a company like Moran Yacht & Ship. In any event, I was persuaded to let them negotiate on my behalf while I simultaneously held discussions with other building options. Moran Yacht & Ship understands yachts, their incredibly complex systems, and what constitutes a practical solution to various owners’ ideas. In short, I would not consider building another yacht without engaging Moran Yacht & Ship to provide the services they are so good in delivering. Former Owner, NORTHERN STAR

Fleet Week sails into NYC with 2024 Parade of Ships. Watch extended video from Chopper 2 overhead

By Renee Anderson

Updated on: May 23, 2024 / 4:55 AM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK --  Fleet Week started Wednesday in New York City, kicking off with the 2024 Parade of Ships.

We have everything to know about how to watch the parade of ships  and   what else is happening this week .

When is Fleet Week 2024 in NYC?

Fleet Week starts on May 22 and ends May 28, the day after Memorial Day. This is the 36th annual celebration in the city, and the theme is "Fleet Week New York...Celebrating Those Who Serve."

It's a chance for people to meet U.S. Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and check out the latest military technology.

"Fleet Week is about celebrating those who serve and recognizing the unyielding strength of our Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard team," Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Rear Adm. Wesley McCall said in a statement. "As we come together to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during their service, we are reminded of the diverse and inclusive fighting force that is currently serving to protect national security and preserve our way of life. Our service members are excited for the opportunity to engage with the community and create lasting connections with the people of New York during this time-honored tradition."

Nearly 2,3000 service members are expected to participate this year, taking in the sights of New York City while taking part in ship tours, band concerts and other events.

How to watch the NYC Fleet Week Parade of Ships

CBS New York's John Elliott was live  with the U.S. Coast Guard on the water  for the Parade of Ships, and Tony Sadiku was  joined by the U.S. Navy Band at Pier 88 . Chopper 2 also flew overhead for a birds-eye-view of the procession.

What time did the Parade of Ships start?

Fleet Week kicks off with the Parade of Ships on Wednesday, May 22. The exact timing isn't released ahead of time, but last year's procession started around 8:45 a.m. and ended around 11 a.m.

Eight military vessels sailed into New York Harbor and then up the Hudson River. The voyage traveled past the Statue of Liberty and Battery Park in Lower Manhattan, then past Hudson River Park on the West Side, cruising by the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at Pier 86, before wrapping up just below the George Washington Bridge.

List of ships participating in NYC Fleet Week

  • USS Bataan from Norfolk, Virginia:  The USS Bataan (LHD 5), known as the "Big 5," is named in honor of the American and Filipino troops who fought on the Bataan Peninsula during World War II. The amphibious assault ship was commissioned on Sept. 20, 1997 and made its maiden voyage two years later in the Mediterranean.
  • FGS Baden-Württemberg from Germany: These ships from our NATO allies will be on tour for one day only Saturday morning at Pier 90 North.
  • FGS Frankfurt am Main from Germany
  • 4 U.S. Naval Academy YPs from Annapolis, Maryland: These four ships help train midshipmen from the Naval Academy for service on the water.
  • USCGC Sturgeon Bay from Bayonne, New Jersey: The USCGC Sturgeon Bay (WTGB 109) hails from Bayonne, New Jersey, where it helps vessels navigate the icy waters of the Hudson River . It also assists with search and rescue missions in ice-covered areas throughout New England.
  • USS Marinette from Mayport, Florida: The USS Marinette (LCS 25) was built in Marinette, Wisconsin and named after the city. It was  commissioned by the Navy just last fall.
  • USCGC Calhoun from Charleston, South Carolina: The USCGC Calhoun (WMSL 759), the Coast Guard's newest cutter ship , is described as the "largest and most technologically advanced ship in the Coast Guard."
  • USCGC Katherine Walker from Bayonne, New Jersey: The USCGC Katherine Walker (WLM-552) also helps with ice breaking missions in the area, specifically covering the Long Island Sound .

Lifeboat crews conduct "fast-paced" rescue of eight people on French yacht near the Harbour

best yacht harbour

LIFEBOAT crews last night carried out a “fast-paced” rescue of eight people who were onboard a French yacht that struck rocks near the Harbour.

The RNLI’s St Helier all-weather and inshore lifeboats, as well as the Jersey Lifeboat Association’s inshore lifeboat, were tasked around 9.30pm to assist the vessel.

The yacht had drifted onto a rock behind the La Collette reclamation site after a rope became entangled with its propeller.

Lifeboat crews were able to get the casualties – some of who were in a life-raft and some were on the rocks – to safety, supported by shore crew, Jersey Coastguard and the Ambulance Service.

In a post on Facebook, an RNLI spokesperson wrote: “The proximity of the incident to the Harbour meant this was a fast-paced rescue, but the exceptional training and teamwork of our crews ensured it was executed efficiently.

“All casualties from the sailing vessel were assessed at the lifeboat station, with a few taken to the hospital for precautionary checks. Jersey Coastguard kindly arranged a hotel for the night, and the sailing boat was recovered and hoisted out of the water in the early hours of the morning.”

They added: “We remind all mariners that lifejackets are essential safety equipment and should always be on board and readily accessible.”

A Ports of Jersey vessel recovered the grounded yacht just after 5am yesterday morning.
