Work on a Superyacht

“Work on a superyacht, move up through the ranks, and maximise YOUR potential.”

It’s been our tag line since the very beginning, and it remains the guiding principle behind everything we do. But how do you move up through the ranks and make the most of this amazing opportunity?

I started out as a green deckhand in the summer of 2011, and I certainly didn’t have any of the answers back then! However, after working on some of the largest and most prestigious superyachts and eventually being promoted to the rank of chief officer, it was finally time to share what I had learnt.

It all began with YouTube videos, but it soon became apparent that superyacht crew members needed more than just videos to help them realise their full potential. This is where The Academy comes in…

Testimonials.

“I think the reason that Quay Crew is (in my opinion and most of my colleagues’ opinions too) the industry’s leading agent is down to the culture of integrity, honesty and real care that permeates your company, and the careful selection of a candidate that will stay in the job. Long may it continue. I will never hesitate to use, recommend or assist Quay Crew for as long as I’m in yachting, and after.”

Chief Officer – 70m Yacht

“Having moved into the yachting industry from the commercial sector, Sam gave me valuable feedback on my CV and routes into the industry. I can highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for their next engineering position as she does her best to make sure that the yacht is right for you.”

2nd Engineer – 52m Yacht

“Having been in contact with Caroline since the summer, I felt the whole way through my search application process that she was completely on my side and has supported me and given me the confidence to propel my career to the next level.”

Chief Stew – 60m Yacht

“I would just like to take this opportunity to express how amazing Max has been in finding myself and my partner a position on a brand-new build. Max has been such a rock star in not just finding me one job but two jobs, which I am absolutely grateful for. It’s really nice to have a crew agency like Quay Crew who are reliable, trustworthy as well as always wanting to consider your best interests. The team at Quay Crew are absolutely exceptional and I will always recommend only the best for them. ”

Captain – 30m+ Yacht

“The best crew agent I have ever dealt with…always on the ball, super efficient, attentive and always available. There are so many agencies that only care about the yachts because they are the ones paying and completely ignore the crew so I want to thank you for all your help. ”

Head of Service – 100m Yacht

“I really appreciate the communication and commitment from Quay Crew and would like to mention that Tom has been incredible throughout the process. He had a vast amount of information relating to the role and yacht and knew exactly what would suit me. I highly recommend Quay Crew.”

Bosun – 60m+ Yacht

“Quay Crew was the most professional of the agencies I was using in my search. I had constant communication throughout and the whole process was personal. I’m very happy with the placement and would recommend Glen and the team to anyone. ”

2nd Officer – 65m Yacht

“What sets the team apart more than anyone else is the open and honest dialogue as well as the feeling that we’re working towards the same goal. Rather than just being another number or CV on someone’s desk, I established an amazing rapport with Glen so that he was able to really know what my goals were and where I wanted to take my career…and he was absolutely instrumental in seeing that I achieved that by placing me on my current vessel. At some point in the future, I plan to be on the opposite side of the interview process and Quay Crew will be the first agency that I reach out to.”

2nd Officer – 80m Yacht

“I wanted to say how fantastic Tom has been in finding a job for me. From first talking to him on the phone, he gave some fantastic advice about the industry and made the whole process feel calm and easy. His communication was absolutely exemplary and he went above and beyond to secure me a job. I would highly recommend Quay Crew to anyone.”

Deckhand – 90m Yacht

“I recently completed a 4 week trip through Quay crew on a yacht that Phil placed me on. I had applied for the role through other agencies but they refused [to put me forward] and Phil was the only recruiter that I spoke to who also saw flexibility in the job requirements. It’s a pleasure dealing with a recruiter that actually understands the role and the candidates suited for it. I hope to work with Phil and the Quay crew team again in the future.”

Types of Yacht Jobs Available in Europe

When looking for a job on a yacht in Europe, there are many types of positions available depending on your qualifications and experience.

For those with a valid license, captains are always in high demand.

Captains are responsible for the overall operation of a vessel and must possess expert knowledge of navigation and safety.

Additionally, captains must be able to lead a crew and oversee the day-to-day operation of the vessel.

Obtaining a Valid License for Working on a Yacht in Europe

work on a superyacht europe

Obtaining a valid license for working on a yacht in Europe is essential for anyone looking to pursue a career in the maritime industry.

Depending on the country in which you plan to work, you may need to obtain a valid license from the local maritime authority.

This will usually require passing a series of tests and exams to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the maritime industry.

Additionally, you may have to provide proof of experience and certification in sailing, navigation, or boat maintenance.

It is important to check with the local maritime authority to find out what is required in order to obtain a valid license.

Once you have the required qualifications, you will be able to start working on a yacht in Europe.

Familiarizing Yourself with Maritime Laws and Regulations

Working on a yacht in Europe is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it also requires that you understand and adhere to the local laws and regulations governing the industry.

Maritime laws and regulations can vary from country to country, so it is important to ensure that you are up to date on the specific laws and regulations that apply to the country in which you plan to work.

The first step in familiarizing yourself with the maritime laws and regulations is to contact the relevant government department or agency in the country you plan to work in.

They will be able to provide you with the most up-to-date information about the laws and regulations that apply to the maritime industry in that country.

Additionally, this is a great opportunity to ask any specific questions you have about the particular laws and regulations that apply in the country you plan to work in.

It is also important to understand the international laws and regulations that apply to the maritime industry.

This includes laws that regulate the safety of vessels and personnel, as well as environmental regulations that apply to the operation of vessels.

Additionally, there are other international conventions and treaties that regulate the operation of vessels in international waters.

You should make sure you are familiar with these laws and regulations, as they may affect the operation of the vessel you plan to work on.

Finally, you should also familiarize yourself with the regulations of the flag state the vessel is registered in.

This includes the requirements for vessel registration, crew qualifications, vessel operations, and safety equipment.

Understanding these regulations is important, as it will help ensure the vessel is operated safely and in compliance with the law.

By familiarizing yourself with the maritime laws and regulations that apply to the country you plan to work in, as well as international and flag state regulations, you can ensure you are properly prepared for your position on a yacht in Europe.

This will help to ensure that you can confidently and safely perform your duties, and will help you to make the most of your experience working on a yacht in Europe.

Experiences Needed for Working on a Yacht in Europe

work on a superyacht europe

For those looking to work on a yacht in Europe, it is important to have experience in the maritime industry.

This experience can come in a variety of forms, including sailing, navigation, and boat maintenance experience.

Having experience in all three of these areas is ideal but having at least some knowledge of one or more of them is essential.

Sailing experience is necessary to understand the basics of how a boat works and how to maneuver it.

Navigation experience is essential for understanding how to safely navigate a boat in unfamiliar waters.

Finally, boat maintenance experience is necessary for servicing the boat and making sure it is in proper working condition.

In addition to having experience in the maritime industry, it is important to have a valid license for the country in which you plan to work.

This license will enable you to legally operate a boat in that countrys waters.

It is also important to be familiar with the laws and regulations governing the maritime industry in the destination country.

This will ensure that you comply with all local laws and regulations while operating a boat.

Finally, it is important to have a medical check-up to ensure you are fit to work on a yacht.

This check-up should include physical exams, blood tests, and other medical tests to ensure you are healthy and able to work on a yacht.

With the proper qualifications and training, working on a yacht in Europe can be a great adventure.

It can provide an opportunity to explore the world, meet new people, and gain invaluable experience in the maritime industry.

With the right preparation and knowledge, you can make the most of your working experience on a yacht in Europe.

Medical Check-Ups Required to Work on a Yacht

For those considering working on a yacht in Europe, it is important to understand the medical requirements before applying.

You will need to obtain a valid medical certificate from an approved doctor or medical professional that certifies your fitness to work on a yacht.

This certificate is often referred to as a fitness to work certificate and is required for all crew members on a vessel.

The certificate must be issued within the last 12 months and must include a statement that you are medically fit to work on a yacht.

Depending on the laws and regulations of the destination country, you may also need to provide a copy of your medical records and any relevant medical tests and/or screenings.

These tests may include vision, hearing, and blood tests.

It is important to note that the medical certificate is only valid for the country in which it was issued.

If you plan to work on a yacht in a different country than where you obtained the certificate, you must obtain a new one from a doctor or medical professional in the country you plan to work in.

Additionally, depending on the country and maritime regulations, some crew members may be required to undergo regular medical checks to ensure their fitness to work on a yacht.

By obtaining a valid medical certificate and undergoing any required medical checks and tests, you can ensure that you are medically fit to work on a yacht.

This is a necessary step in working on a yacht in Europe and will help ensure the safety of both you and your fellow crew members.

  • Working on a Superyacht after Brexit

Now that the UK has left the EU, free movement between Great Britain and the EU ended on 1st Jan 2021. With all the changes taking place, how will working on a Superyacht after Brexit affect you?

Superyachts will still need crew, and there are still lots of Superyachts advertising new positions. The way we find work will change over time, but there are some rules that you should be aware of.

Travelling to the EU after 1st January 2021

British Citizens can travel to any EU member state without a visa . However, under the new rules, Brits, along with other Non-EU nationals, will only have the right to stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen area.

What is the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Area is a group of 26 EU and Non-Eu countries that agreed to free movement across internal borders without the need for passport checks. The 90/180 rule relates to entry and exit from the entire Schengen Area apart from Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Romania, and Ireland.

If you travelling to the EU after 1st Jan 2020, the 90/180 rule will apply. When you arrive at the airport, immigration officials may ask for:

  • A return or onward ticket
  • At least 6 months left on your passport – check your passport!
  • Show you have enough money for your stay

What happens if I stay for more than 90 days in the EU?

If you have not been keeping track of your days in the EU and you spend, say, 91+ days in France, then it is likely that you will end up with an “over-stay” flag on your passport. Some countries could apply the letter of the law, which could lead to a fine or, at worst, deportation. Other EU countries, which tend to be the southern European countries, are more relaxed. The fact is nobody knows what will happen. To make sure you don’t overstay, there is an online short-stay calculator. I guess the message is to know your dates and stick to the rules.

Can I still look for work on a Superyacht after Brexit?

Now that the UK has left the EU, working on a Superyacht is permitted, assuming the vessel is registered (flagged) outside the EU. The rules regarding day work are not clear, some EU countries (France and Spain) require UK citizens to hold the correct working visa, while others have not made their position clear. There is some movement, for example, the Italian Government has just launched a Superyacht visa , which allows Superyacht crew, currently working, to stay for an extended period in Italy.

The way crew find work on a Superyacht is changing, with more positions found online, whereas before Brexit, with zero travel/work restrictions, people would travel to the EU to look for work, for as long as they liked. Saying that, we still hear that the crew houses in France are full of crew looking for work.

What happens when I find a job on a Superyacht?

This is the important bit!

After you have found a job, and signed a contract, the Captain will sign you on to the yacht. Most Superyachts are flagged (registered) in a country outside the EU. Therefore, once you are signed on, the 90-day clock stops as your place of work is onboard, i.e. outside the EU.

When you leave the yacht, for example, a week’s holiday, the Captain will sign you off the yacht. The moment you walk off the yacht, you are back in the EU, and the 90-day clock starts ticking again. However, 90 days is ample time, and it is unlikely that you will ever need to worry about time spent in the EU!

UK Citizens currently working on a Superyacht

If you are currently working on a Superyacht within Schengen Area, we recommend that you ask the yacht’s agent to arrange for a Customs official to stamp you out of the Schengen Area. It is likely that without an exit stamp in your passport you may have problems leaving the EU. As we have just left nobody knows whether or not EU customs officials will take issue if your passport has not been stamped.

Apply for a Discharge book ASAP.

Once you have signed a contract of employment we recommend that you apply for a Discharge book . Your Discharge book is an Internationally accepted document allowing the holder to land at foreign ports without needing a visa. If you hold a discharge book then you can travel between the UK and your yacht without restrictions.

Can I still use my European Health Insurance Card?

The deal announced on 24th December says that EHIC cards issued before 2020 will remain valid until expiry. Now we have left the EU, a new card is available called the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Both the EHIC and GHIC cards cover existing illnesses as well as emergency care.

Please beware of companies offering this card at a fee, as it is available for free through the NHS. You can view further details and apply here .

Travel insurance

Anybody traveling to Europe should take appropriate travel insurance for the duration of your stay. Once employed the yachts medical insurance policy will cover for any accidents while working onboard. It is not always the case that the yacht’s private medical insurance will cover you for accidents on your weekends off.

We recommend that you maintain travel insurance cover in case of accidents when off the yacht.

Looking to start a new career on a Superyacht

Despite Brexit and all the changes we are reading about, in time things will settle down and we will adapt. It is a fact that Superyachts will still need crew whatever the world throws at us. For people that would like a career as a Deckhand or Steward/ess then Flying Fish can help make your goal a reality.

Download – Ultimate Guide to Working on Superyachts

So you’re thinking about getting a job on a Superyacht? Having a career on a Superyacht is a dream job: it will change your life forever. You g...

According to a Superyachting Index Report :

“… about 25,000 crewmembers are necessary for today’s fleet of superyachts, but only about 15,000 currently work aboard yachts.”

I can imagine the eyes of any aspiring superyacht job seeker lighting up after reading a statistic like that!

However, it is important to remember that, even though the superyacht market has expanded at a quicker rate than at any other point in its history, finding work as superyacht crew still represents a massive challenge—especially for the inexperienced.

This seems to be an ongoing concern for many industry outsiders. I recently received an email from a friend seeking help on the subject of how to find work on superyachts.

“Hi Matt, my son is just about to leave the Royal Navy after 6 years of service; he wants to work on a superyacht at entry level as a deckhand. Please could you advise where you think would be the best place to visit agencies in person and at what time of year? He is registering with the various online agencies but doesn’t seem to be having much luck at the moment. I am sure that if he could meet prospective Captains and crew it would be the best way for him to sell himself, as he is honest and hardworking. Is it the wrong time of year to do the French Riviera dockwalks, etc.? Your advice would be so much appreciated.” Brian

Is the Superyacht Industry Seasonal?

The first thing to be aware of is that the superyacht calendar is cyclical—not necessarily seasonal in the traditional sense.

It typically involves the summer season spent in the Mediterranean (April–September) and the winter season in the Caribbean (October–March).

At the start and end of a superyacht season, there is usually a lot of chopping and changing going on among superyacht crew as many leave their yachts for a number of different reasons.

Sometimes the position was only seasonal to begin with, sometimes the itineraries of certain yachts do not agree with the wishes of a certain crew, while others may decide to leave the industry to explore other interests altogether.

Whatever the circumstances, it can be a very unsettling time for crew — especially when good friends leave!

Know Your Options

Now that you have an idea as to the movement of superyachts at the various times of the year, it is relatively straightforward to decide where you are going to start your job search. Job boards also exist to help you, and are listed at the bottom of this article.

The two key months here are April (Europe) and October (U.S.).

How To Make It Happen in Europe

If you intend to start your job search in April, then you need to be based at one of the major ports like Palma de Mallorca in the Balearics or Antibes in France. The latter is by far the best option, given the access to other ports and marinas on the French Riviera, Monaco and Italy. Also, certain docks are blocked off in Palma and you cannot access them without an electronic key card.

Once you are in Antibes, you can use the French and Italian rail system to explore literally hundreds of docks and thousands of berths across the Mediterranean’s largest ports and marinas. There a number of boat shows from April onwards including the Antibes Boat Show, the Monaco Boat Show, and later in the season the Cannes Boat Show.

When Should I Arrive?

If you choose to start in Europe, you should plan to arrive around the middle of April. This is early in the season but will give you plenty of time to register with the crew recruitment agencies, start networking with other crew, and implement some dock-walking strategies, such as those found at work on superyachts.

Many superyachts will still be in the U.S. at this stage and/or crossing the Atlantic back to the Med for the European season. If you arrive early enough you can literally be there standing on the docks with your CV in hand as they arrive in the port.

How Long Will It Take To Find Work?

For anyone with little or no experience with the yachting industry, I would allow for a minimum of 4-6 weeks to find permanent work onboard a superyacht.

This time period is not set in stone as you may find a permanent position within a couple of weeks, but I just want to make sure that your expectations are as accurate as possible—there are a lot of people looking to find work on superyachts today, and the role of the deckhand is especially competitive.

You may find that first permanent job in a couple of weeks, but you must be prepared to ride it out if necessary. You can and will find daywork during this period so you will be earning money during this time. Daywork pays anywhere from €12 to €15 per hour or approximately €100 per day.

How Much Should I Budget For Every Day?

This all depends on how much time you spend down at the bar! All jokes aside though, it will depend on how disciplined you are.

You can expect to pay €6 for a pint of beer at The Blue Lady (a popular yachtie hangout) and close to €10 for a drink in a nightclub. You can get away with spending €20 a day on meals as there are many snack bars and delicatessens.

Transport on the French and Italian train system is relatively cheap and I know many yachties that don’t pay for transport on the trains at all. Just don’t get caught as the fines are €25 without a valid ticket and €50 if you hold no ticket at all.

For accommodations, you can expect to pay between €100 and €150 per week in a flat share or crew house. It is often cheaper to rent an apartment with four others, for example, than, say, staying in a crew house. Do the research and network, network, network!

Where Do I Stay?

There are many crew houses in Antibes. However, there are a lot of people looking for work so you can expect the crew houses to be fully booked more often than not.

If you cannot find accommodations in Antibes, I would highly recommend looking in Juan Les Pins or Biot—both are a very short train ride away from Antibes and are accessible by bus and even bicycle. You can do it by foot if you really need to.

What Visas Do I Need to Look for a Job in the European Union?

Holders of European passports do not need a visa. If you hold a passport from outside of the European Union, always check with your local consulate about whether or not you need a visa to enter France or any other country where you decide to start your job search. For holders of non-European passports, you will most likely need to obtain a Schengen visa .

How To Make it Happen in the U.S. (and easier option for Americans)

The superyacht capital of the world is Fort Lauderdale in the U.S. There are many shipyards, docks and marinas, and all are relatively easy to access by bicycle, public transport or car. Around October, the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show takes place, so many of the words finest superyachts will be in town for the world’s premier yachting exhibition.

Whether you are currently based in the U.S. or planning to travel there from Europe or elsewhere in the world, I would look to arrive from October onwards. Once again, this is early in the season as many yachts will still be in the Med and/or crossing the Atlantic and making their way to the U.S. for the Caribbean season. Many yachts will undergo a yard period at this time of year, as these days it is often cheaper to have maintenance work done in the U..S than it is in Europe.

As in Europe, it’s a bit of a lottery and a very difficult question to answer. Once again though, it will all depend on your level of experience and skill set. Many recruitment agencies like Elite Crew in Fort Lauderdale will not be able to help you with a job search if you don’t hold an appropriate visa for the U.S. ( B1/B2 or C1/D Seaman’s visa). As a guideline it could take someone with little or no experience at least 4–6 weeks to find a permanent position. This factors in how long it will take you to find daywork and thereby gain enough experience onboard a superyacht so that your CV or resume will be seriously reviewed by a Captain or 1st Mate.

There are a number of apartment shares and crew houses available in Fort Lauderdale. Simply search for “Crew accommodation.”

Once again this depends on how disciplined you are. If you’re going to go out partying at Waxy’s (a popular crew bar) every night of the week, then you’re going to make this far harder than it needs to be. A beer at Waxy’s will cost you $6 and a drink in a nightclub around $8.

You won’t have to spend much money on transport as the best way for you to hit the many docks, marinas and shipyards is by bicycle. You can pick up a new bicycle from Target for $150 or buy a second-hand one from a used bicycle store for around $50. You can get away with spending $30 on food a day, as there are many fast food establishments. Crew accommodations will set you back approximately $100–$150 per week.

What Visas Do I Need?

For non-US citizens, remember to obtain a B1/B2 visa (currently $185) or C1/D Seaman’s visa before you leave.

  • The superyacht industry is highly competitive and in order to qualify for employment a financial investment is required (training & travel)
  • For applicants without relevant experience, being physically present at or near Superyachting hubs when searching for employment is important
  • Obtaining the correct qualifications does not guarantee employment and training is not refunded
  • Your passport and ability to obtain Visas have an impact on your employability
  • Having contacts, experience, and the correct attitude is an advantage
  • Working in the industry comes with some amazing benefits but like any career path, there are also disadvantages
  • Being an extremely "hard worker" is not an advantage, it is expected
  • The quality of work and attention to detail needs to be of a very high standard
  • You need to be well-mannered, professional, and well-suited to living in close proximity to other crew
  • Presentation matters
  • Getting advice from multiple sources including crew who work in the industry is advised
  • Different yachts, owners, crew, and itineraries = different experiences

2. Choose the Yacht Crew Department you Wish to Work in

Before joining the yachting industry, it is essential to decide on your career path. The work environment and duties associated with each superyacht department vary greatly. It is therefore advised that you understand the training, duties and requirements associated with each role. The most common roles for crew entering the industry are:

Super yacht stewardess serving guests at training school

Steward / Stewardess

A superyacht stewardess is responsible for the guest service, housekeeping and laundry. In some cases, the position is combined with an additional role for those who come from a beauty or healthcare background.

Super Yacht Deckhand

Superyacht Deckhand

A deckhand is responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the yacht's exterior. Wash downs, line handling, tender driving, watersports and bridge lookout duties are common tasks for deck crew.

Chef food

Superyacht Chef

Working as a superyacht chef comes with some unique challenges. Although the skills are certainly transferable, there is specific training and certification required. It can be a tough but extremely rewarding job.

Superyacht Engineer

Working on a yacht or superyacht as an engineer can be a rewarding career path. Although a background in engineering or mechanics is an advantage, it is not a prerequisite. The duties associated with the role are diverse, exciting and require a great deal of hard work.

3. Complete All Mandatory Superyacht Training Courses

Having the correct training and certifications is essential to your employability in the superyacht industry. In order to become a crew member, you will need to have completed the following training:

  • STCW 2010 Basic training
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Awareness or Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
  • Department-specific training for your desired role. (I.e. stewardess, deckhand, engineer, chef, and officer courses)

4. Obtain an ENG1 or ENG1 Equivalent Seafarer Medical Certificate

Image showing a doctor performing ENG1 medical inspection to inform candidate.

ENG1 Medical Certificate (or ENG1 Equivalent)

Superyacht work can be physically demanding. Ensuring that crew are physically well and able to work at sea is a crucial aspect of the crew and guest safety.

In order to work on a superyacht, you will have to hold an ENG1 Medical Certificate. Because the certification is set by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the examination must be performed by an MCA-approved doctor. The examination is done in order to identify any medical conditions that may prevent you from safely performing your work duties at sea.

5. Choose a Location to Join a  Superyacht

When looking for your first job it is essential to be in the right place at the right time. There are a lot of factors to take into consideration when selecting your location, however the two most popular areas for working on a superyacht are:

6. Obtain the Correct Visas & Documentation for the Relevant Superyacht Hub

It is essential to obtain the correct visa for the country you plan to work in. It is important to understand the types of visas that exist as well as the local laws with regard to job seeking.

7. Create a Superyacht Crew CV

Yacht Crew CV Example

A professional and well-structured superyacht CV will help differentiate you from other job seekers looking to enter the industry.

Superyacht crew resumes have a different structure to normal CVs. If your CV is not laid out appropriately, your chances of being considered for a position are slim.

Examples and more information on how to create a great CV can be found on the links below.

8. Find Superyacht Job Vacancies

Finding the right job in the superyacht industry takes time and commitment. Using credible resources is key:

Crew Agencies

Crew Agencies play an intermediary role between yachts and crew. There are numerous agencies scattered around the main yachting hubs. Registering is a simple process and can be done online, many agencies will then request a short interview in person.

Social Media Pages:

Online job boards and social media pages are extremely useful ways to apply for jobs as well as to find day work. It is important to only apply to jobs if you meet the criteria (have the correct experience and qualifications).

Be wary of which jobs you apply to. We recommend you only apply for jobs from closed social media groups with active moderators. Fake job posts do occur at times. Make sure you do not meet with or send personal information to suspicious accounts.

Find Appropriate Social Media Pages

Dockwalking:

Dockwalking is the process whereby you walk the docks with the aim of getting day work or even landing a permanent job. It is a gruelling task as there are often long distances between docks and it requires hours on foot. It also involves a lot of rejection as many boats are fully crewed and not looking for employees.

Find out more about dock walking.

Networking:

Your introduction to the world of yachting. The industry is growing exponentially; every year more boats are built, and more crew join the industry. It remains however, a close-knit community that feels a lot smaller than it is. ‘Everybody knows everybody’ and finding a job through a friend or a friend of a friend is often the best way to go. Crew like to work with people they get along with. They are therefore much more likely to hire someone from their extended network of friends than to look elsewhere (provided experience and qualification requirements are met).

A Few Suggestions:

  • Network at every opportunity you get.
  • Socialise with people you meet at training courses.
  • Attend dock parties and BBQs.
  • Socialise with the people in your crew house and visit other crew houses.
  • Join yacht groups on social media.
  • Hang out in the ‘yachty’ bars and restaurants.
  • The more people you know in the industry the better off you will be.

chief stewardess, i was first introduced to bespoke crew when i was personally called for a reference check. as we know, the industry is small, and we are all somehow connected by social interaction. checking references, especially verbal references, is of utmost importance when trying to find that “perfect fit” for your yacht. i immediately knew that the friendly, trusted voice on the end was doing their job diligently, trying to find that ‘perfect fit’ for another captain, and i respected that. we have worked closely with bespoke crew for nearly three years and have only positive feedback to contribute to their professional service. most, if not all, the crew has served on a longevity basis, all of whom fit in very well with our crew dynamic. i can highly recommend bespoke crew for your crew placement needs., aldon beukman - captain, bespoke has hands down become my number 1 crew agency. the agents i have worked with have all been extremely responsive and friendly and have made a real effort to build a relationship with you. they truly understand what you are looking for and never try to 'throw anything out there.' with my crazy schedule, they are good about chasing me up when need be and never letting anything fall by the wayside. there is always open, honest transparency, and i appreciate that so much. it is a big relief that there is such a consistent, all-star crew agency out there, brielle crumpler - chief stewardess, it’s been a pleasure dealing with the bespoke crew team ….thank you for discovering the right individuals for our program. we greatly appreciate the care is taken when introducing quality candidates to us and the effort to ensure a good long-term fit., len beck - Yacht docked in US port symbolizes struggle to convert seizures into cash for Ukraine

  • By Matthew Kupfer
  • Oleksii Kovalenko

Natasha Mozgovaya

FILE - The superyacht Amadea sails into the San Diego Bay June 27, 2022, seen from Coronado, California.

When a superyacht worth $230 million pulled into the port of Everett, Washington, for repairs last month, it made a big splash in the city of 110,000 residents.

The 106-meter luxury behemoth known as the Amadea is currently in possession of the U.S. government, which alleges the yacht belongs to sanctioned Russian oligarch and politician Suleyman Kerimov, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Looking out over the port, Everett resident Bob Templeton wondered who was paying for the superyacht's upkeep. “They ought to sell it to somebody and get a lot of money,” he told VOA with a laugh.

Easier said than done. Templeton’s offhand remark cuts to the core of a dilemma faced by the United States as it attempts to use sanctions to rein in Russian aggression against Ukraine.

FILE - Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov watches a soccer match at Lokomotiv stadium in Moscow, Russia, Aug. 23, 2012.

The U.S. government has moved to take ownership of the Amadea through a legal procedure called civil forfeiture. The end goal is to sell the vessel and transfer the proceeds to Ukraine.

But another Russian businessman, who is not under sanctions, has challenged that move, claiming that he is the Amadea’s true owner.

As the courts try to sort out the yacht’s ownership, U.S. taxpayers are footing the bill: over half-a-million dollars a month for maintenance.

And the complex legal battle could drag on for a long time, increasing the costs for the U.S. and delaying any benefit to Ukraine from the yacht’s seizure, according to Stefan Cassella, a former U.S. federal prosecutor and expert in civil forfeiture.

“Nobody who is a sanctioned oligarch owns anything in his own name,” he said. “You have an entire zoo of third parties who claim they own the property.”

Kerimov did not respond to a request for comment. The U.S. Department of Justice declined to comment.

Kleptocapture win

In May 2022, just months after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, law enforcement in Fiji seized the Amadea at the request of the U.S. government.

That was a major victory for Task Force Kleptocapture, a unit of the U.S. Department of Justice created in the wake of the Russian invasion to enforce sanctions.

But completing the job has proved more complicated.

Since the 1980s, civil forfeiture has been the Department of Justice’s go-to tool for targeting drug dealers, the mafia and money laundering operations, according to David Smith, a former DOJ prosecutor who pioneered the practice.

It allows law enforcement to seize assets without convicting their owner of a crime. All that prosecutors must prove is that the assets were used in a crime, profited from a crime or resulted from criminal activity.

But when that crime is a sanctions violation, proving the asset is owned by a sanctioned person is critical.

Lawyers representing the company that owns Amadea have claimed the yacht actually belongs to Eduard Khudainatov, a former CEO of the Russian state oil company Rosneft, who is not subject to sanctions.

FILE - Eduard Khudainatov, formerly of Russian state oil company Rosneft, is seen outside Moscow, Sept. 4, 2010. (Presidential Press Service via AP)

He and his legal team say the seizure is unlawful and based on a “misleading” FBI affidavit.

“Eduard Khudainatov is, and always has been, the rightful owner of the Amadea. The Biden Administration’s unconstitutional seizure of the vessel was based on demonstrable falsehoods that we will establish in court,” his spokesperson said in a statement to VOA. “The government asserts factual and legal theories that are divorced from forfeiture sanctions and money laundering laws, and unsupported by the cases interpreting those laws. This boondoggle is nothing more than political theater that has cost American taxpayers more than $20 million to date.”

The U.S. government disagrees, referring to Khudainatov as a “straw owner” of the Amadea.

According to prosecutors, Khudainatov is “supposedly the beneficial owner of at least eight yachts or yacht projects” — a fleet valued at over $1 billion. They include a yacht that prosecutors state is actually owned by Igor Sechin, the sanctioned incumbent CEO of Rosneft and a Putin ally.

Journalists have linked another one of the superyachts, the Scheherazade, to Putin himself. In May 2022, it was impounded in Italy .

While Khudainatov’s lawyers were unable to prevent the Amadea's transfer to the United States, they are currently fighting forfeiture in a New York court.

The DOJ states that Kerimov purchased the yacht in 2021, three years after he was added to sanctions list. Prosecutors allege that the oligarch or his proxies routed dollar transactions through U.S. financial institutions to maintain the Amadea, which would constitute a sanctions violation.

But proving Kerimov’s ownership — and disproving Khudainatov’s claim — is no simple task.

Assets like superyachts are often owned through a series of proxy owners, offshore companies and trusts. These entities are often registered in jurisdictions chosen for their secrecy.

Cassella, who has studied the case, says that Khudainatov’s legal team is dragging out proceedings, while the U.S. government is trying to compel him to answer questions and provide documentation that would prove he is not the Amadea's owner.

“This is civil forfeiture defense 101 for anybody who’s got an infinite amount of money to pay lawyers to oppose the forfeiture,” Cassella said.

Expensive process

While the legal battle goes forward, the U.S. government is paying to keep the Amadea running.

According to court filings, upkeep of the yacht costs roughly $600,000 a month. Insurance costs another $144,000 monthly, and there are other periodic expenses.

In a February filing, an official of the U.S. Marshals Service stated that the Amadea was also scheduled to undergo drydocking in March, which appears to have been delayed.

That procedure, which involves removing a vessel from the water to conduct repair work, was estimated to cost $5.6 million — although the government negotiated not to pay the other monthly costs during that period, the official noted.

In recent months, however, the U.S. government has taken steps to decrease the cost.

In February, it petitioned the court to sell the Amadea, citing the excessive costs of maintaining the yacht. Such a sale would effectively convert the yacht into cash, but not settle the ownership question.

In a filing opposing the sale, Khudainatov’s legal team stated that he had consistently offered to cover the cost of maintaining the Amadea.

On May 17, the U.S. government also submitted a motion to reject Khudainatov’s ownership claim, stating that he lacks standing to contest forfeiture.

If a judge agrees, that could allow the forfeiture to proceed.

Controversial, challenging strategy

While confiscating the assets of Russian oligarchs and top officials may not face fierce opposition from most Americans, civil forfeiture is controversial in the United States.

Advocacy organizations, both liberal and conservative, have criticized the practice, arguing that it allows law enforcement to seize private property without convicting the owner of a crime.

Smith, the former DOJ prosecutor, says the burden falls hardest on low-income Americans who struggle to pay for a lawyer.

This was one of the reasons why eight members of the U.S. House of Representatives in April 2022 voted against a bill calling for the Biden administration to seize sanctioned Russians’ assets to fund Ukraine.

Smith believes applying civil forfeiture to oligarchs is “arbitrary” and he is unsure whether the U.S. will be able to seize enough assets from oligarchs to make a meaningful difference for Ukraine.

“I would rather spend the money [subsidizing forfeiture investigations and proceedings] on other things than trying to forfeit these yachts,” he said. “And who knows how many will ultimately be forfeited.”

That concern is not unfounded. The Kleptocapture Task Force is working to forfeit or restrain around $700 million , but, so far, the United States has been able to transfer forfeited assets to Ukraine in only a handful of cases.

In May 2023, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland authorized sending $5.4 million to Ukraine that the U.S. had seized from sanctioned Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev. It represented the first such transfer of forfeited funds to Ukraine.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland authorizes the payment of an unspecified amount to the Kyiv government, money he said the U.S. seized from Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev.

US Sends Ukraine Cash Seized From Russian Oligarch

Later that year, the U.S. transferred over a million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine after seizing them en route from Iran to Yemen.

In February 2024, the U.S. government, after breaking up a scheme to illegally procure military-grade technology for Russia, transferred $500,000 in forfeited Russian funds to Estonia to provide aid to Ukraine.

In April, the U.S. transferred another shipment of weapons seized from Iran to Ukraine.

Those transfers put funds and ammunition in the hands of the Ukrainian government, but they were also of a significantly lower value than the Amadea.

Bigger cases involving oligarch assets may prove more difficult.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if it took 10 years to resolve some of these cases,” said former prosecutor Cassella.

Natasha Mozgovaya reported from Everett, Washington. Matthew Kupfer and Oleksii Kovalenko reported from Washington, D.C.

Darke is a longtime ESPN broadcaster who first worked for Fox when he was paired with Donovan at the 2022 World Cup . Darke is among seven British broadcasters on the four Euro 2024 announce teams.

Jacqui Oatley will work with Warren Barton in a repeat of another 2022 World Cup duo, Derek Rae with former England goalkeeper Robert Green and Darren Fletcher with former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves. Fletcher is a longtime British broadcaster who worked for Fox at the 2019 Yankees-Red Sox games in London and not Hargreaves’ former Manchester United teammate.

All four crews will be based in Germany, where the European tournament will be played from June 14 to July 14.

Strong and Holden, a former U.S. midfielder, were Fox’s lead team at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. JP Dellacamera will work with Cobi Jones, his 2022 World Cup partner, and Luis Omar Tapia with former American midfielder Maurice Edu. Tapia joined Fox this year after a decade at Univision.

Strong and Holden will be on site for all U.S. national team matches at the Copa America, which will be played in the U.S. from June 20 to July 14. The U.S. is among the invited guests at the 16-team championship of South America.

Dellacamera and Jones will call matches from stadiums and from Fox’s Los Angeles studio. Tapia and Edu will be based in Los Angeles.

Former referees Mark Clattenburg and Joe Machnik will be rules analysts.

Both tournament finals will form a doubleheader on July 14, with the Euro 2024 championship in Berlin kicking off at 3 p.m. EDT and the Copa America game at Miami Gardens, Florida, starting at 8 p.m.

U.S. Seeks to Join Forces With Europe to Combat Excess Chinese Goods

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen warned that China’s industrial strategy posed a global threat that requires a united response.

A close-up shot of Janet Yellen during a hearing.

By Alan Rappeport and Liz Alderman

Alan Rappeport is traveling with Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen in Germany and Italy this week. Liz Alderman is the chief European business correspondent.

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen said on Tuesday that the United States and Europe needed to work together to push back against China’s excess industrial capacity, warning that a wave of cheap Chinese exports represents a grave threat to the global economy.

Ms. Yellen’s remarks, delivered during a speech in Germany, highlighted what is expected to be a central topic of discussion when the Group of 7 finance ministers meet in Italy this week.

“China’s industrial policy may seem remote as we sit here in this room, but if we do not respond strategically and in a united way, the viability of businesses in both our countries and around the world could be at risk,” Ms. Yellen said at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, where she received an honorary doctoral degree.

China’s excessive production of green energy technology has become a pressing trans-Atlantic concern in recent months. Officials in President Biden’s administration have grown increasingly worried that his efforts to finance domestic manufacturing of clean energy and other next-generation technologies will be undercut by China, which is churning out steel, electric cars and solar panels at a rapid clip.

The Biden administration is now looking to Europe to help the developed world prevent the kind of China shock of the early 2000s, which helped decimate manufacturing in exchange for cheap goods. Last week, Mr. Biden increased tariffs on some Chinese imports, including levying a 100 percent tax on electric vehicles. He also formally left in place levies on more than $300 billion worth of Chinese goods that President Donald J. Trump had imposed.

The United States hopes that a united front will convince China that its largest trading partners are prepared to erect trade barriers that will prevent Chinese electric vehicles, batteries and panels from dominating Western markets.

Ms. Yellen emphasized on Tuesday that the United States was not trying to carry out an anti-China policy, but said China’s actions posed a threat to the global economy that warranted a coordinated response.

She pointed to China’s push to dominate clean energy technology and other sectors, saying that ambition “could also prevent countries around the world, including emerging markets, from building the industries that could power their growth.”

The trend toward protectionist policies is likely to become another point of contention between China and the world’s most advanced economies. Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, derided Mr. Biden’s decision to impose new tariffs on Chinese goods last week as a “political maneuver.”

“We hope the U.S. can take a positive view of China’s development and stop using overcapacity as an excuse for trade protectionism,” Mr. Liu said.

The new U.S. tariffs could put additional pressure on Europe to erect trade barriers of its own to prevent China from redirecting more of its exports there. Europe’s officials are already considering additional levies on Chinese cars, which pose a particular threat to Germany.

About 37 percent of all electric vehicle imports to Europe are produced in China, including Chinese brands and ones made by Tesla and German automakers with plants there. Europe is the world’s second-biggest E.V. market, and imports there skyrocketed last year to $11.5 billion, from $1.6 billion in 2020.

The European Commission is investigating whether Chinese state subsidies intended to help the country’s companies make cheap cars are damaging Europe’s auto industry. The sector provides nearly 14 million direct and indirect jobs in Europe, and the six million cars that it exported last year generated a trade surplus of more than 100 billion euros.

Europe’s investigation could result in preliminary duties on Chinese electric vehicle imports as soon as July, though any tariffs are likely to be far lower than the 100 percent imposed by the Biden administration. But unlike Europe, which is already importing cars from China, the United States has erected several barriers to prevent Chinese E.V.s from coming to its shores.

Europe’s investigation into China’s subsidies and whether they merit tariffs has aggravated a political divide. Some countries, such as Germany, which is Europe’s biggest maker of electric cars, have been against an investigation. German officials are wary of pressing penalties that might incite Beijing to shut out German carmakers such as BMW and Volkswagen.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a speech in Stockholm last week, “We should not forget: European manufacturers, and also some American ones, are successful on the Chinese market and also sell a lot of vehicles that are produced in Europe to China.” He added that at least half of electric vehicles imported to Europe from China were Western brands.

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, has been pushing for “de-risking” Europe’s relationship with China. Her approach is backed by President Emmanuel Macron of France, who hosted his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this month and has urged Brussels to step up protection against what his administration sees as unfair Chinese competition.

The Brussels investigation has focused less on whether China is dumping large numbers of cars into Europe and more on how subsidies have allowed E.V.s made by BYD, Geely and SAIC, the three biggest Chinese E.V. makers, to offer cut-rate prices. The Chinese government has criticized the European Union for not investigating Western brands with factories in China — including Tesla, which exports more E.V.s from China to the European Union than any other producer.

The Rhodium Group , an independent think tank that focuses on China, said that to compensate for Chinese state subsidies, the European Commission would have to impose duties of up to 50 percent on Chinese E.V.s. But the group suggested that such a move would be unlikely in Europe unless officials took a more “drastic” review of World Trade Organization rules, and suggested that tariff rates of 15 to 30 percent were more realistic.

In the meantime, Chinese electric vehicle makers, including BYD and Great Wall Motor, are setting up factories in Hungary to build cars that would be viewed as European-made products, which could raise trade issues eventually with the United States.

The Biden administration is watching with similar concern as Chinese car companies invest in factories in Mexico, which could potentially be used to enter the U.S. market.

Following her speech, Ms. Yellen told reporters that the United States and countries in Europe have different concerns when it comes to commerce with China and, as a result, they could use different tools to address them. But she added that because many of the concerns about China’s heavy subsidization of exports are broadly shared, it is “more forceful to communicate to China as a group.”

The approach by the United States and Europe to work together to confront China does pose the risk of retaliation, inflaming trade tensions that could weigh on the world economy. Chinese officials said last week that they would respond to the new trade measures imposed by the United States.

In an interview with The New York Times this week, Ms. Yellen argued that the new U.S. tariffs were targeted and that she did not believe that China wanted to escalate tensions.

“I anticipate some response on China’s part, but my hope is that it’s moderate and proportional,” Ms. Yellen said.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A fake news report that appeared on Poland’s national news agency saying that Prime Minister Donald Tusk was mobilizing 200,000 men starting on July 1 was probably the work of Russia-sponsored hackers and was designed to interfere with the upcoming European Parliament election, authorities said.

“Everything indicates that we are dealing with a cyberattack directed from the Russian side,” said Krzysztof Gawkowski, a deputy prime minister who also holds the digital affairs portfolio. “The goal is disinformation ahead of (European Parliament) elections and a paralysis of the society.”

Tusk said on X that it was “Another very dangerous hacker attack which well illustrates Russia’s destabilization strategy on the eve of the European elections. ... It is increasingly clear how important these elections are for us.”

Russian authorities didn’t immediately provide a reaction to the allegations.

The unprofessional-looking “urgent” report appeared Friday at 2 p.m. (1200 GMT) on Polish News Agency, or PAP, the country’s national wire service.

Eight minutes later, the agency “killed,” or removed, the report and then issued a statement saying that it wasn’t the source of the article. The hack was repeated and the fake news was pushed again to the wire and was killed again.

Security officials said that their experts were working to find the source of the hack, and also insulate PAP from further attempts to publish fake news on its systems.

The government says that Poland, which supports Ukraine in the war with Russia, is being targeted in a hybrid war directed by the intelligence services of Russia and Belarus. Polish authorities say the techniques being used include sending migrants to the border from the Belarus side; sabotage including attempted arsons ; espionage cases ; and cyberattacks on state administration offices.

Gawkowski said that Poland’s sensitive infrastructure was being subjected all the time to various kinds of incidents and cyberattacks.

The European Parliament election in Poland will be held on June 9.
