Motor yacht charter vs sailing yacht charters in Sardinia

Choosing between a crewed motor yacht and a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences, budget, and the experience you’re seeking.

Motor yachts offer several advantages that appeal to many travellers. They provide greater speed and agility, allowing you to cover more distance along Sardinia’s coastline in less time. With their luxurious amenities, spacious interiors, and onboard chefs, motor yachts offer unparalleled comfort and indulgence. Their stability in choppy waters and ease of handling make them suitable for guests who prioritize a smooth sailing experience or have limited sailing experience.

On the other hand, sailing yachts offer a more authentic and serene sailing experience. With their reliance on wind power rather than engines, sailing yachts provide a quieter and more intimate atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of Sardinia’s coastline. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance with their classic designs and billowing sails, appealing to travelers seeking an authentic maritime adventure. Additionally, eco-conscious travellers often prefer sailing vessels due to their lower environmental impact and reliance on renewable energy.

Ultimately, choosing a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences and desired level of comfort. Both options offer their own unique advantages and can provide an unforgettable journey along the breathtaking coastline of Sardinia.

Sardinia is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a part of the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of the Italian Peninsula and just south of the French island of Corsica. It is an autonomous region of Italy and boasts over 1,850 kilometers (1,150 miles) of coastline, featuring stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs. Sardinia is surrounded by smaller islands and archipelagos, such as the Maddalena Archipelago to the northeast, offering additional exploration and discovery opportunities on your own private yacht charter. These islands often have secluded beaches, hidden caves, and charming villages to explore.

Sardinia’s coastline boasts miles of superlative beaches and secret grottos only accessible by boat. Porto Cervo is at the region’s main center, home to Costa Smeralda. This area has become increasingly desirable for luxury yacht charters because of its remote location and exclusive atmosphere. South of Porto Cervo, you will find forested mountains, medieval villages, and stunning seas. Another recommended site is La Maddalena National Park, a marine reserve that offers opportunities for secluded anchorages and overnight stays. Spotted with seven main islands and many islets, La Maddalena offers crystal-clear waters for an afternoon snorkel and access to the beautiful pink sand beach named Pink of Budelli. Sardinia’s coastal cuisine differs from inland; the seafood base and pasta dishes pay homage to the sea and further contribute to the laidback yet luxurious atmosphere of the island.

When is the best time to go on a Sardinia yacht charter?

The best time to hop on a yacht and explore Sardinia is usually in the summer, from June to September. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for soaking up the sun and diving into the crystal-clear waters. Remember that summer is popular with yacht charter guests and tourists, so planning ahead and booking early is advisable. Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are great options for Charter guests who prefer fewer crowds. You’ll still get lovely weather and plenty of chances to enjoy the island’s beauty without the hustle and bustle of peak season. So, whether you’re aiming for exciting summer adventures or a more relaxed experience, there’s a perfect time for a Sardinia yacht adventure to fit your preferences.

When is the best time to visit Sardinia on a luxury crewed motor yacht? .cls-1 { clip-path: url(#clip-plus); } .cls-2 { fill: none; stroke: #000000; }

The best time to visit Sardinia is during the summer months when you can enjoy wonderfully warm temperatures and sun-drenched days. The shoulder seasons – fall and spring – are also superb times to visit. While the temperatures will likely be a little cooler than in the summer, a key benefit is that Sardinia will be less crowded, providing a more intimate experience.

Average temperatures in Sardinia

  • Summer (June to August): During the summer months, Sardinia can experience high temperatures, with averages ranging from around 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit). In July and August, temperatures can sometimes exceed 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) or more.
  • Spring (March to May) and Fall (September to November): During the shoulder seasons, temperatures are milder. Spring temperatures range from around 15 to 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit), while autumn temperatures can be similar. These seasons are often considered pleasant for outdoor activities.
  • Winter (December to February): Winters in Sardinia are relatively mild compared to many other European destinations. Average temperatures during the winter months typically range from 8 to 15 degrees Celsius (46 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit).

Average water temperatures in Sardinia

  • Summer (June to August) : During the summer, the sea around Sardinia is at its warmest, with water temperatures ranging from approximately 22 to 26 degrees Celsius (72 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit). This is the ideal time to maximize all your yacht’s tenders and water toys.
  • Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November): In the shoulder seasons, water temperatures are cooler than in summer but still comfortable. Spring temperatures may range from around 15 to 19 degrees Celsius (59 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit), and autumn temperatures can be similar.
  • Winter (December to February) : Winter brings cooler water temperatures, with averages ranging from around 13 to 15 degrees Celsius (55 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit). While it may be too chilly for swimming in winter, the coastal areas remain picturesque, and it’s still possible to use water toys such as kayaks and jet skis to explore Sardinia’s coastline.

No matter what time of year you want to rent a luxury motor boat in Sardinia, Moran Yacht & Ship can help.

How far in advance do I need to book a Sardinia yacht rental? .cls-1 { clip-path: url(#clip-plus); } .cls-2 { fill: none; stroke: #000000; }

Sardinia is a popular Italy yacht charter destination, so for the best selection of vessels, you should book as far in advance as possible. However, it’s still possible to book last-minute getaways, as long as you are flexible around the charter vessel and dates. If you want to book a luxury yacht charter in Sardinia, contact the charter experts at Moran Yacht & Ship.

How many crew will there be on my Sardinia yacht charter? .cls-1 { clip-path: url(#clip-plus); } .cls-2 { fill: none; stroke: #000000; }

  • Steward(ess) : Attend to guests, handle housekeeping duties, and provide excellent service.
  • Deckhands : Assist with various tasks, including handling ropes, water toys, and general maintenance.

For smaller yachts, expect a crew of around 4 to 5, while the largest superyachts will often boast a crew above 20. The larger the yacht, the more likely you will have specialized crew members, including an engineer, masseuse, personal trainer, sommelier, or dive instructor. Your yacht’s crew is there to enhance your overall experience, providing a high level of service, catering to your needs, and ensuring the safety and smooth operation of the yacht.

Specific crew arrangements can be discussed with your charter broker, and it’s often possible to customize the crew to meet your preferences and requirements.

How many guests can I take with me to Sardinia? .cls-1 { clip-path: url(#clip-plus); } .cls-2 { fill: none; stroke: #000000; }

Most yacht charters are limited to a maximum number of 12 guests, even if their cabin figuration means they can technically sleep a higher number of guests. Charter vessels are normally limited to 12 guests due to the additional compliance and regulations they must meet to be able to carry more guests. However, there are charter vessels that can sleep more than 12 guests. Moran Yacht & Ship can help connect you with your ideal vessel, whether you are looking for a refined motor yacht for your immediate family or a mega yacht that can carry a large group of friends. The Advanced Provisioning Allowance, commonly referred to as APA, is an additional charge applied on top of the base charter rate for Sardinia boat charters. This provision covers various non-fixed expenses, including fuel, mooring fees, and provisioning, such as food and drinks. Your luxury yacht charter broker will assess and determine the anticipated APA costs. This amount is paid in advance, and the Captain utilizes the APA funds to address expenses throughout your luxury yacht charter. Upon completion of the charter, a comprehensive summary of all costs will be provided, and any remaining funds in the APA will be promptly refunded to you. On average, the APA is estimated to be around 10% of the base charter rate.

Sardinia Yacht Charter

Sardinia yacht charters round out one of the most important yacht charter locations in the ever popular Western Mediterranean and this beautiful island sees some of the best and newest private luxury yachts in the world during summer time. Some of the most attractive beaches and harbours in the Mediterranean bring the motor yachts to these emerald shores, whilst the island’s fair summer breeze and notable yachting regattas draw in the luxury sailing yachts to visit. Sardinia yacht charter offers an exciting mix of natural rugged beauty culture and history with chic ports, restaurants, designer shops and beach clubs.

Culture lovers, food connoisseurs and naturists delight in their discoveries on Sardinia, where high-walled fortresses perch above sparkling blue waters and centuries-old cathedrals form cool and calm sanctuaries in the hot and lively coastal towns.

The famous Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo holds several regattas throughout the year and with plenty of berths for superyachts, the town is ideally situated for exploring the island or simply staying put and enjoying the spas, boutiques and night clubs to be found within the town.

Whether guests are looking for adrenaline-fuelled water sports or to cruise along to the best fishing spots in the area, visitors return to the region again and again for the idyllic beauty and secluded beaches that set the scene for a candlelit meal under the stars.

Sardinia is the perfect luxury yacht charter destination. As the second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is a wonderful location to explore on a superyacht. Sitting just off the coast of Italy, this chic Mediterranean Island offers picturesque shores lapped by azure waters. Enjoy discovering romantic beaches, secluded caves and anchorages, including some of the best restaurants in the Med.

Sardinia is famous for its designer boutiques, exclusive bars, quaint cafes and laid-back lifestyle. It’s an island rich in culture, history and natural beauty. One of the best yachting destinations in the world is Sardinia’s coastline which is known for its spectacular beaches. Liscia Ruja has an arc of powdery pink sands, ideal for a day of relaxation. The uninhabited island of Mortorio makes for an idyllic location for an overnight anchorage.

On a Sardinia yacht vacation, you will also discover ancient towns and hilltop villages. From the city of Cagliari in the south to charming coastal towns in the north such as Alghero, this beautiful island offers a unique mixture of architecture and culture. Visit the island’s stone tepee-like structures, the Nuraghe, which are among the oldest constructions known to man. The Sardinian language, Sardo, is still spoken on the island along with Italian as well as several other local dialects.

A firm favourite with owners and superyacht enthusiasts in the north east of the island lies the famous Costa Smeralda. Originally bought by the Aga Khan 50 years ago, this area is a fantastic mix of colours, fishing villages, spectacular villas and high-end boutiques. One of the most exciting party destinations in the Med can also be found here, Porto Cervo. Located in the heart of Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo boasts a stunning marina nestled in the sheltered harbour. Did you know that the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta is held here every June? Porto Cervo is a must-visit for any luxury yacht charter in Sardinia.

Sardinia is the ideal stop-off and destination point for both Western and Eastern Mediterranean yacht charter itineraries. Along with the popular cruising grounds of Costa Smeralda, there are also more than 60 islands which make up the Maddalena Archipelago, the first National Park in Sardinia. Some of the best diving, snorkelling and watersport opportunities can be found in this part of the Med.

There’s no shortage of activities to be enjoyed when choosing to charter a superyacht in Sardinia. For lovers of golf, spend a day at Il Pevero, one of Europe’s most spectacular courses. More about a Sardinia Charter

A charter in Sardinia, Italy is quite an experience. Sardinia is a universe unto itself. It's an island of Italy, where the local language is incomprehensible to all other Italians. An island with one of Europe 's most stunning coastlines; it's waters teem with fish; it's golden sands disappear into oceans of blue; it's rugged mountains are covered with flocks of sheep producing cheese so pungent, your palate will never forget.

Sardinia is completely unique and the perfect place for a yacht charter holiday that mixes excitement with the exotic. During the summer private boats flock to Sardinia. With an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, concentrated from April to September and warm winds off the African continent, the Sardinian climate, can be quite delightful and not quite as hot as other yacht charter areas in the Mediterranean.

You'll find that the Sardinian ports and harbours compare very well with the Mediterranean’s other chic hot spots on the French Riviera or Italian Riviera . Summers tend to attract lovely warm days and crowds of millionaires, supermodels and luxury yachts, especially to the prestigious Yacht Club Costa Smeralda at Porto Cervo , near Olbia .

For those whose interests are a little more adventurous, Sardinia's humble bays and ports will allow you to explore some sheer and stunning terrain. A good start is the Grotte di Nettuno (Neptunes Caves) on the beautiful Capo Caccia to the north.

The Sardinian yachting scene has increased in popularity and gone from strength to strength of late, and the types of luxury charter yachts available are all the main types, including motor, sailing, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and the ever more frequent superyacht charter.

As with other parts of the Mediterranean and Italy, the Sardinian yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have lighter winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes.

Porto Cervo Costa Smeralda Sardinia Italy

Plain sailing with all the wind you need

Sardinia has a typical Mediterranean climate with three main winds to ensure great conditions for sailing: The powerful Maestrale - from the north down along the west coast, the strong Ponente - offshore west wind breezes through each season, and the warm Scirocco prevailing on the east coast.

Diverse landscape and geography

Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean. The island is 270 km from north to south and 145 km from east to west. It’s 190 km away from the Italian mainland and 12 km from Corsica . It has an interesting geography with mountains over 1,800 m. The rarely seen rain comes mainly in the winter and autumn.

The gorgeous Sardinia marine coastline

There are hundreds of private coves and stunning beaches along the coastline that beckon you to explore and plunge into. Find mysterious solitude in the myriad of hidden bays and large salt-water lagoons and pools.

With a Sardinia yacht charter, you’ll enjoy gorgeous crystal clear turquoise waters varying in all shades from green to blue.See the dramatic rock formations in the north and mesmerizing dunes on the west. Check out the relaxed sophisticated ambiance of the famous Emerald Coast . There are endless opportunities for exploration, relaxation, and pleasure on a Sardinian yacht charter.

Sardinia has a strong environmental ethos

Over 25% of the island's territory is protected - with three national parks – Asinara, Arcipelago di La Maddalena , and Gennargentu . There are also 60 wildlife reserves, 5 W.W.F oases, 25 natural monuments, and a Geomineral Park, preserved by UNESCO. There are many marine reserves and the best way to experience this natural bounty is by boat.

The island has laws prohibiting new building activities near natural and cultural sites. Wind and solar power have increased noticeably in recent years. Carlo Rubbia, Nobelist in physics, is creating an experimental solar/ thermal energy using Jatropha and Colza oils.

Rare native animals and plants

Sardinia is home to the Mediterranean Monk Seal, the Giara horse, the Albino Donkey, the Mouflon, the Sardinian Long-eared Bat, the Sardinian Deer, the Sardinian Fox, the wild boar, and the Maghreb, a skink that can reach 30 cm in length, and the Great Spotted Woodpecker.

The Famous Mediterranean Sardinian Cuisine

Sardines, rock lobster, squid, tuna, scampi, bottarga, and other seafood are predominant in Sardinian cuisine. This is fresh and simple Mediterranean seafood at its best. Also, wild boar and suckling pig are spit-roasted or boiled in bean and vegetable stews, thickened with bread. Your personal chef on your yacht will be able to gather fresh local Sardinia ingredients and create Sardinia inspired cuisine to your taste, as well as any other cooking styles your request.

Rich cultural customs still alive

Sardinians remain enthusiastic warm-hearted hosts. The native language is widely spoken on the island, as well as Italian. Sardinia is home to one of the oldest forms of vocal polyphony, known as Cantu A Tenore, which Frank Zappa and Peter Gabriel have found irresistible.

Sardinian culture is alive and well, and young people are actively involved - with carnival costumes and a unique three reed-cane instrument. Sardinia has produced notable jazz musicians such as Antonello Salis, Marcello Melis, and Paolo Fresu. Goat and sheep rearing are still important for cheese making. Crafts include rugs, jewellery, textile, lacework, basket making, and coral.

Intriguing ancient history with fascinating remnants

Sardinia has a unique heritage dating from 4000 BC - including the Phoenician sailors, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Saracen raiders, Spaniards, and African Berber pirates, famines survived on wild ferns and weeds, kidnappings, and political subversion. Much of this history is apparent from remnants and influences on the coastline and can be seen from your boat. Some of the best sites, however, require a shore trip and you can ask your captain or charter broker to organise this for you. Here are a few fascinating remnants: • Giants' Tombs – at Aiodda near Nurallao-Nuragus and Coddu Vecchiu • Nuraghe – megalithic round tower-fortresses such as at Su Nuraxi di Barumini - a UNESCO World Heritage Site • Castle - 13th century,  at Acquafredda near Siliqua • Necropolis - Anghelu Ruju • Temple - Antas • Romanesque church - of Santa Maria del Regno • Catalan Gothic church - 16th century, at Assemini • Ghost villages and industrial architecture – at Argentiera • Paintings from the 15th century – at Benetutti church • Fascinating cave – at Bonu Ighinu

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo

Sardinia has strong traditions in darts, football, and car racing. Sassari has the Mores Raceway and Cagliari has hosted Formula 3000 racing. Olbia has hosted the Rally d'Italia Sardegna in the FIA World Championship - held on narrow, twisty mountainous roads around the glamorous town of Porto Cervo.

Of course sailing is big here! Cagliari hosts regular international regattas, such the RC44 championship, the Farr 40 World championship, and the Audi MedCup. Several America's Cup contenders have been attracted here, and part of the Louis Vuitton Trophy was held in the Maddalena archipelago in 2010. Porto Pollo is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers by virtue of a western wind that accelerates between Sardinia and Corsica. In 2005, Aglientu, hosted the Kitesurf World Cup.  Sa Istrumpa, also known as Sardinian Wrestling, is a traditional Sardinian sport, officially recognized by the Italian National Olympic Committee.

Sardinia is perhaps one of the most well-known places for yacht racing and superyacht regattas and the annual sailing events include the Sardinia Cup , The Pendennis Cup , the Dubois Cup , the Superyacht Regatta and more.

Inland transport

The best way to get around on a Sardinia holiday is by sea, on your own bespoke luxury private crewed charter yacht. For those who do venture inland a driver and car can be organised to pick you up from your yacht. Sardinia has a system of dual carriage freeways that connect the main towns and transport infrastructures with a relaxed speed limit of 90 km/h. The secondary inland and mountain roads get narrow with many hairpin turns. With a low population density, the smallest territories are reachable only by car. Trains also connect the whole island.

Your Sardinia yacht charter vacation – with yacht rental or crewed yacht – can take you anywhere around this jewel of the Mediterranean. A wide range of superyachts, luxury yachts, and charter yachts is available to suit your needs.

Whether sailing the Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena islands of North Sardinia, or cruising north to Corsica on a bareboat charter or crewed charter, a Sardinia yacht charter with Borrow a Boat is going to be an unforgettable experience. Book your superyacht charter Sardinia today!

Why a Superyacht Charter

Not far from the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, North Sardinia is up there with the Italian Riviera and French Riviera in terms of highly fashionable superyacht charter destinations. With beautiful beaches, coastline and islands, the Italian island of Sardinia also has some high quality resorts with excellent boutiques, three star restaurants and a nightlife to rival the Balearic Islands.

Destinations

There are four broad yacht charter destination you can enjoy on a Sardinia luxury yacht charter on the Mediterranean Sea. Let's take a look at them below.

Emerald Coast

With Porto Cervo at the epicentre, the northern mainland of Sardinia has a wealth of luxury resorts and quite stunning venues to drop anchor. You may wish to enjoy a white sandy beach all to yourself and those of your charter guests, or engage with the frenetic social life ashore in Porto Cervo, Cannigione or Porto Rotondo. You will be among beautiful people who know how to have fun, day and night!

La Maddalena

One of the draws to the Emerald Coast is the La Maddalena archipelago just to the NE of Porto Cervo. These islands have many a beautiful beach and clear waters in which to go snorkeling or swimming. The main islands of La Maddalena Island and Santa Maria are the most crowded but, perhaps with your skipper's advice you can enjoy somewhere quieter and more exclusive to enjoy on your private yacht charter as part of a perfect yacht holiday.

Just to the north of Sardinia across the Bonifacio straits is the French island of Corsica. You may wish to visit the fashionable resort of Porto Vecchio or a quieter destination like St Florent on the north coast (perhaps before heading off to St Tropez on the French Riviera and Italian Riviera as part of a longer sailing trip). Corsica is known for its Genoese fortifications and old cities that have been inhabited for thousands of years - a big culture fix after the Costa Smeralda!

Southern Italy

Perhaps on a luxury motor yacht you may have the range and speed to go further afield on your Sardinia yacht charter. The fashionable Amalfi Coast and nearby islands such as Capri are an afternoon's sail across the calm Western Mediterranean Sea.

Further south you can reach Sicily and its nearby volcanic Aeolian Islands. Your West Mediterranean yacht charter itinerary may take in the fireworks of Stromboli or Mount Etna as well as the fun of Palermo ashore.

Charter a yacht with Borrow a Boat today!

Superyacht Charter Sardinia

With your luxury charter yacht as a base, the crew will look after your needs while you focus on fun and relaxation. On your sailing yacht or motor yacht you can access isolated, sandy beaches inaccessible to others in quiet coves where you can swim among colourful fish.

You can go ashore at different locations to enjoy socialising and the best restaurants in Porto Cervo and then perhaps disappear to rebalance off a quiet island like Santa Maria the next. Often the boat charter will carry water toys such as a motor boat, windsurfing gear and jet skis for you to blast around a quiet bay and have fun out of the sight and sound of others.

A Sardinia superyacht charter is best enjoyed in the summer months between May and September with the peak season in July and August on your sailing yacht or motor yacht charter yacht.

A Sardinia luxury crewed yacht charter is one of the safest, most luxurious and most convenient ways to travel and enjoy beautiful locations from the mountainous terrain of the Corsican coast to the excellent restaurants near Olbia on your yacht charter holiday.

Luxury, service, privacy and accessibility are just some of the benefits of choosing a luxury crewed yacht charter. Enjoy a vacation in unparalleled comfort and luxury as you sail to some of the world's most magical destinations; many of which are only accessible by yacht. Here are some of the advantages of choosing this type of trip over a villa or hotel vacation:

Freedom to Explore: A new horizon each morning, personalised 24/7 service, complete privacy, the freedom to sail and explore at leisure and the chance to discover the very best of the culture, cuisine and entertainment at each location.

Experienced Captain and Crew: Our captains and crew have personal experience of the world's best and safest anchorages and marinas, alongside in-depth local knowledge of cultural attractions, shore dining and entertainment opportunities.

Onboard Entertainment: a range of sophisticated toys all waiting for you in the tender garage. Get your adrenaline rush on the jet skis, paddleboards and kayaks.

Types of Superyacht charter

Here are a selection of charter yachts that you may choose from to enjoy on your Sardinia superyacht charter holiday, whether on a bareboat charter basis or crewed yacht charter boat rental basis. Connect with the yacht owner or charter company through us today to arrange your Sardinia superyacht charter!

Whether sailing yachts or power catamarans, these have a wide beam and shallow draft and make for spacious and comfortable luxury yachts. Even the smaller vessels (15m LOA and up) will have en suite heads in the cabins, and can often carry water toys like jet skis and paddleboards aboard. You can have a crewed catamaran charter or bareboat charter depending on the size of vessel and what you want from a sailing holiday.

Motor Yacht

From a catamaran to a luxury motor yacht charter these are faster and often have far more space. Expect a more comfortable, premium experience on motor yacht, ranging from a mini cruiser to top end superyacht charter vessels. You can have crewed yacht charter or bareboat charter depending on the size of vessel with the skipper and crew looking after you.

The larger crewed yachts are often available on a corporate yacht charter or private yacht charter basis as a means of escaping to an out of the way place without distraction. These will have water toys such as a speed boat, jet ski and diving equipment so you can enjoy water sports even without having to go ashore.

Sailing Yacht

Whether a classic racing yacht or more modern cruiser racer sailing yacht, these sleek, stylish and more traditional sailboats still have the space you need but can sail in near silence with just the sound of the wind and waves as you move along under wind power alone. These can come as something smaller or a 30 metre plus corporate yacht chartertoo with water toys and a skipper and crew looking after you.

Weather conditions in Sardinia:

Luxury yacht charters are best when augmented by great weather. The perfect time for a premium charter in Sardinia are:

Early Season (May to June): The NE maestrale from the Rhone Valley may cool the region a bit and the seas are cooler after winter. Sea temperatures can be 15 degrees C but air temperatures can touch the comfortable low 20s.

Peak Season (July and August): Sea breezes will make for great sailing but it can get very hot with temperatures into the 40s. There will be little in the way of rain, but you will be grateful for any in the heat.

Late Season (September and early October): The sea is going to be warm - in the 20s C - yet the air cools down to the high teens and 20s, making for a great time for a swim! Winds - notably the maestrale - can pick up and you may find it rains more too.

When to Visit Sardinia

Sailors will enjoy the Solaris Cup out of Porto Rotondo in late May/early June. Out of Porto Cervo the annual Lora Piana superyacht regatta in June blasts around the La Maddalena Island group - something you may be able to participate in on a luxury sailing yacht with a dedicated racing skipper to perhaps even go for Line Honours!

July and August are when the marinas are at their busiest and most expensive. It is very crowded, even out on the islands. Most of the social events are at their best at this time of year though and the buzz is a good one.

For those after a quieter time after the crowds have gone, try to visit Sardinia in September. The seas are bath-warm still and the sun is comfortably - not fiercely - warm. Though many shorreside establishments close, it can be a more authentic side to Sardinia.

On your luxury yacht sailing boat or motor yacht charter itinerary you can enjoy the best of Southern Italy on Sardinia yacht charter.

14 days sailing holiday Southern Italy and Sardinia

Over a 14 day yacht charter holiday, possibly on a crewed yacht charter, sail out of Porto Cervo for Naples across the Western Mediterranean. Enjoy the Sorrentine Peninsula and Amalfi Coast, taking time to hang out on Capri. Sail south now for the Aeolian Islands off the largest Italian island, Sicily. Cruise the coast as far as Palermo and then north to Cagliari on Sardinia. Work your way up the coast back to North Sardinia and the Costa Smeralda for handover.

Luxury Marinas in Sardinia

There are a large number of marinas across the east coast of Sardinia. Here are a few highlights:

The closest coast town to the airport, Olbia has two marinas. Porto Portisco has 589 berths for superyachts up to 90m LOA. The smaller Marina di Olbia has 270 berths for vessels up to 80m LOA.

At the centre of the action of the Costa Smeralda is Porto Cervo. This has two marinas - the large Porto Cervo Marina has 720 berths for vessels up to 120m LOA, while the smaller Marina di Cala Bitta has 200 berths for vessels up to 27m LOA.

Other marinas include the well equipped Porto Rotondo Marina with 652 berths for vessels up to 90m LOA. La Maddalena Marina has 140 berths for vessels up to 50m LOA.

Why Use Borrow A Boat For A Luxury Yacht Charter:

We are an independent company which ensures you receive the maximum choice of vessel at the most competitive prices. Alongside our passion for yachting, our commitment to service and decades of luxury yacht experience ensures your luxury yacht charter will be an unforgettable experience. Most importantly, all our luxury yachts and superyacht charters meet stringent and current safety and insurance requirements in their respective locations.

We will handle all logistical preparations to make your yacht charter the experience of a lifetime. We can help with logistics, including pre-and post- charter hotel stays in Sardinia

Our captains and crew have personal experience of the world’s best and safest anchorages and marinas, alongside in-depth local knowledge of cultural attractions, shore dining and entertainment opportunities. Choosing a luxury yacht charter gives you and your guests the opportunity to travel discreetly, with access to the most private coves and anchorages, far from the stresses of today’s busy life.

Our superyacht brokers have access to an impressive selection of crewed superyacht charters available to you in the world's most glamourous locations. Varying in size from 40m/130ft to megayachts of over 180m/590ft some of the most luxurious superyachts are fitted with a heli pad, gym, cinema room, spa, sauna and separate owners' decks.

Your first step is to decide how many guests you will have onboard, your location preference and your desired dates. Once you have decided on the basics you can speak to a yacht broker who will organize a detailed itinerary based on where you are travelling and your preferences.

Yes, all charter companies require a deposit to book a superyacht. This is usually refundable if you have to cancel or make changes, as long as it’s at least 90 days in advance. Do read the cancellation policy small print and consider trip insurance if booking inside the cancellation window.

Anywhere you wish: your only limit is your imagination. Our luxurious superyachts are berthed worldwide in the most beautiful locations: Set sail from Tahiti, The Bahamas, the French or Italian Riviera, Maine and Florida. Or fly to the Caribbean or the Maldives for a relaxed cruise among the tropical islands. Many of our crewed superyachts also have the range, power and crew expertise to transport you and your guests to more unique locations such as Antarctica, Alaska and Patagonia.

How many people are in your party? This determines the size of luxury superyacht you need to reserve, so get a headcount before you start researching. The main points to consider are your budget, the number of guests, and the season at your intended destination.

Your charter rate will include the hire of your superyacht and its equipment, together with the services of its captain and all crew. The vessel will be properly insured against all marine risks. Additional fees not covered in the charter rate include: VAT, marina fees, local taxes, harbor fees, canal fees, fuel charges, electronic communications, provisioning and any other bespoke extras required. If you choose to embark at a different port to the superyacht’s home location, then you can expect to pay for delivery and/or return fees and expenses.

Superyachts are generally charted at a minimum for one week, but you can charter a superyacht for as long as you want, depending on availability.

Superyacht charter rates are always quoted weekly and vary from low to high season. Contact us for the most up-to-date rates.

We usually recommend 10% of the total charter fee, however gratuities are entirely at your discretion.

The size of your superyacht will determine how many guests are allowed onboard. Legally the maximum guest number on a luxury superyacht is 12. Speak to us if you have a large party and we will source a superyacht that has increased stateroom capacity.

We will discuss all your transfer and onboard requirements when you make your reservation and will send you a comprehensive questionnaire to complete. We will be in touch again just before your charter begins to ensure all your preferences and individual requirements regarding dietary needs, medical conditions and allergies have been covered. This also includes your requested activities, including toys, entertainment and offshore excursions.

Usually guests are covered under the superyacht owner’s own liability policy for damage, however we recommend taking out Charter Liability insurance as an extra buffer. Should you or your guests accidentally damage any interior fixtures and fittings, the hull, or any of the tenders/toys then you will be fully protected for any claims against you. Our dedicated insurance team will advise you.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

Yacht Charter Itinerary Sardinia

superyacht charter sardinia

Day 1 – 6 nautical miles

Porto Cervo to Cali di Volpe

On arrival at the international airport, two crew members will warmly welcome you and will transport you to the awaiting tender that will ferry you to the anchorage. After your journey there will be time to relax, explore your surroundings and meet the entire crew while we cruise for about 45 minutes to Cali di Volpe and pick up a mooring for the night. While moored you may enjoy water sports or go to shore in the tender and enjoy the beauty of Cali di Volpe and Porto Cervo.

Cali di Volpe is lined with some of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches in the Mediterranean . It is a breathtaking anchorage where guests can start to adjust to their vacation. Start the process slowly by relaxing or jump right in and get the water toys out!  After dinner a movie under the stars on our outside aft deck can be provided.

Day 2 – 10 nautical miles

Porto Liscia or Saline – La Maddalena Islands

From the lively town of Porto Cervo, we depart this morning for a quiet sail up to La Maddalena Archipelago on the northeast coast of  Sardinia . Only reached by boats or ferries, this charming and largely uninhabited area includes the islands of Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli. The yacht will anchor off Liscia or Saline, which will depend on the weather which spot will be better. During the afternoon the tender will take you around the Archipelago for sightseeing and a breath-taking snorkel.

The main island ‘La Maddalena’ will only be 3 – 4 miles away by tender. It is a very small island with only a handful of sights such as Piazza Umberto, Cala Francese, via Garibaldi that are short distances from one another. Most visitors come to the island to experience the laid back lifestyle of the locals and walking around the island is the best way to do that.  Maddalena offer a few small local restaurants. The food here is mainly local Italian dishes and fresh daily caught seafood.

Day 3 – 19 nautical miles

Iles Lavezzi, Corsica/Bonifacio

Today we will depart early and anchor off Isles Lavezzi, a remote water park sanctuary that is made up of spectacular rock formations. Its idyllic beaches and shallow seas is an excellent spot to swim, snorkel or dive. The yacht can always arrange a dive boat for this area where it is well known for large colonies of grouper fish and crystal clear water up to sixty feet.  Marked pathways enable you to explore the island.

turquoise

Bonifacio, Corsica

Bonifacio is an amazing town, dramatically built right on the cliff edge. Here you can get off the boat and enjoy an afternoon at leisure meandering through the medieval lanes, touring the walled fortress area, or strolling along the bluff high above the harbor.  On the tip of the promontory is the marine cemetery and windmills that date from the XII century – but best of all is the view stretching across the straights of Sardinia. Terrace bars and restaurants, ice cream parlors and boutiques welcome you to this St Tropez type enchanting spot, which you can enjoy into the night.

The yacht can rent four-seat dune-buggies with an English speaking guide to take round the beachside and hilltops of  Corsica . This is very highly recommended by previous charter guests.

Day 5 – 15 nautical miles

Santa Amanza, Corsica

In the morning we travel to Santa Amanza and anchor off a very secluded scenic beach area that is great for water sports, relaxing and just getting away from it all. Being sheltered from the weather elements is a great area to have a beach day or picnic on the beach. This anchorage is the true definition of ‘relaxation’.

Day 6 – 24 nautical miles

Porto Cervo

Today we will travel two and a half hours to Porto Cervo and dock in the old town, which is the most exclusive dock in Europe. Here the sightseeing is a must, the shopping is spectacular and if you would like we can organize dinner ashore. Porto Cervo, a recreational Sardinian fishing village, can be described as active, chic, and very popular with royalty and movie stars alike!  In the early afternoon if you would like to venture out and see Sardinia’s countryside, the captain can suggest a tour van or scooters out of Porto Rotondo. The drive is breathtaking and this unique small town offers local shops and restaurants.

Tomatoes

Day 7 – 6 nautical miles

Cala Sabina

In the morning we will move to a more secluded anchorage where we can do water sports for the entire day and enjoy the beachfront. From this area you can take a short tender ride into Porto Rotondo and explore this unique small town that offers a variety of local shopping and restaurants. The yacht will depart Cala Sabina after dinner for a two hour scenic cruise to Olbia for the morning departure.

Day 8 – Disembarkation

Olbia Sardinia

Please keep in mind that itineraries are only guidelines, and they are not etched in stone! The following outlines for your journey is subject to change, as we are dependent on favorable winds and seas. However we know the areas very well and will have several contingency plans. You may like a specific area and choose to stay longer in that particular place.

A week exploring Sardinia: The best 7-day yacht charter itinerary

  • Ideas & Tips
  • Itineraries
  • See & Do
  • Eat & Drink

By Richard Watkins   Last Updated: 11 February 2022

The Italian island of Sardinia is one of the most inviting and rewarding destinations in the Mediterranean for superyachts. Discover how to make the most out of a Sardinia yacht charter with our 7-day itinerary.

From chic 5-star resorts to wild and remote coastlines dotted with secluded beaches, Sardinia offers a beguiling variety of landscapes and ports of call.

With so much to fit in, take a look at this 7-day Sardinia yacht charter itinerary , which combines everything there is to love about this beautiful island.

Day 1 - Explore the elegant resort of Porto Rotondo

Although not as well known as its Costa Smeralda neighbor, Porto Cervo , the resort of Porto Rotondo is an attractive destination with a well-equipped marina. Set on a crescent-shaped bay, it offers a more peaceful and laid-back introduction to Sardinia.

If you simply want to relax before you begin your luxury Sardinia yacht charter vacation , there are a number of fine beaches nearby. One such beach is Punta Volpe, a curve of soft golden sand which is a particularly good spot for snorkeling. Another good option is Rudargia, a smaller white sandy beach backed by wild Mediterranean vegetation.

If you want to stay on shore for dinner, try Ristorante Deste, which serves a menu of Italian seafood and an excellent selection of wines with fine sea views.

Day 2 - Relax on the idyllic beaches of the Gulf or Orosei

Cruising southwards along the east coast of Sardinia, you will reach the spectacular Gulf of Orosei, speckled with hidden coves and isolated beaches. The best of these is Cala Luna, known locally as Spiaggia di Cala Luna, an inviting crescent of powdery white sand backed by high sea cliffs and fringed with wild pink oleanders.

superyacht charter sardinia

Remote and difficult to reach from land, Cala Luna is best approached by sea, making it an ideal stopover for those exploring the coast on a private yacht charter. The beach is warm and sheltered by the surrounding cliffs, and this is also a great place for snorkeling.

If you want to spend more time in the area, the Bue Marino Caves, with their remarkable stalactites and stalagmites, are just 3km away to the north, while Cala Mariolu, named one of Italy's most beautiful beaches, lies to the south. The sea, which changes in hue from pale blue to deep emerald green, is particularly clear here, making Cala Mariolu a perfect location for scuba diving.

Day 3 - Discover the historic city of Cagliari

Rounding the southern coast of Sardinia, it's time to visit the island's capital, Cagliari . An ancient settlement dating back thousands of years, Cagliari was occupied by a succession of empires, from Carthage and Rome to Aragon and Savoy, who all left their mark.

superyacht charter sardinia

Wander through the historic Castello - the Old Town - and discover the 14th-century Torre dell'Elefante (Tower of the Elephant), the striking cathedral and the grand neoclassical Bastione di Saint Remy which offers wonderful views over the city.

If you're staying ashore for dinner, try Niu, a friendly and informal restaurant housed in a former monastery, which offers a menu of classic Sardinian specialties.

Day 4 - Experience the wild beauty of southwest Sardinia

Following the coast westwards today, you will cruise past the island of Sant'Antioco, which has many attractive beaches, such as the sand and pebble beach at Maladroxia, popular with scuba divers. Just inland, the Nuragic site of S'Ega de Marteddu is worth a look for those interested in archaeology.

superyacht charter sardinia

Heading north you'll reach the wild Costa Verde, a paradise for surfers, with long, secluded sandy beaches and high waves, while inland there are fascinating ancient monuments to explore such as the Roman Temple of Antas at Fluminimaggiore. Those with more time can discover the UNESCO-listed remains of Su Nuraxi, an impressive megalithic settlement dating back to the 17th century BC.

Day 5 - Enjoy a wander through Alghero

Seascape of Alghero, with old battlements by the sea

Continuing north along the western coast of Sardinia, you will reach Alghero , a city with a distinct Catalan character. Take time to explore the Old Town, with its cobbled lanes, squares and medieval churches, and stop for lunch at Al Tuguri to sample the city's famous Catalan-inspired cuisine.

One sight not to miss while you are here is the breathtaking Grotta di Nettuno - Neptune's Grotto - in the nearby rocky headland of Capo Caccia. One of the largest marine caves in Italy , it is renowned for its remarkably beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. It is an easy day excursion from Alghero and a highlight of any Sardinia yacht charter vacation.

Day 6 - Cruise through the spectacular La Maddalena islands

Lying off the northern tip of Sardinia, La Maddalena is the main island in a beautiful and unspoiled archipelago, said to be one of the best-kept secrets in the Mediterranean and home to some of Italy's best beaches and clearest waters.

superyacht charter sardinia

Explore the islands on your yacht and you will find plenty of secluded beaches where you can come ashore to relax, have a picnic and enjoy the natural beauty of these special islands.

Try Cala Corsara, a series of four sandy beaches on the tiny island of Spargi, separated by rocky outcrops and surrounded by typical Mediterranean vegetation. This area is a protected national park, with clear water and rich marine life, making it an excellent place for diving.

Day 7 - Enjoy a party in Porto Cervo

On your final day, cruise into Porto Cervo , the 'capital' of Costa Smeralda and one of the most popular destinations for Mediterranean yacht charters . A favorite of the international Jet Set, Porto Cervo is a sophisticated and exciting resort with so much going on.

While you're here, pay a visit to the legendary Hotel Cala di Volpe for cocktails on the terrace overlooking the sea, and then head to dinner at one of the property's highly regarded restaurants. Anchor your yacht nearby and take a tender into Cala di Volpe's private moorings.

superyacht charter sardinia

For the very best seafood with glorious views of the bay, head to Quattro Passi al Pescatore, the oldest, and still one of the best restaurants in Porto Cervo. Afterward, celebrate the conclusion of your Sardinia yacht charter vacation in style and party with the A-Listers at Billionaire Club.

Before leaving this beautiful island behind, be sure to head to Petra Segreta, a tranquil 5-star resort in the hills south of Porto Cervo, and enjoy a relaxing massage in the Balinese-style spa.
