Ultra-glamorous Puerto Portals is a stratospherically prestigious marina and leisure complex in the Bay of Palma. Well known as an international hub for the Hollywood jetset, it offers more than 600 berths, as well as easy access to the local village of Portals Nous. With Palma de Mallorca just a short cruise away, the local shops and eateries are also outstanding. With its lovely bay views and impeccable standards, the Iberostar Grand Hotel is a delectable way to enjoy a waterfront cocktail – and if you want to take a more active approach to recreation, the popular beach resort at Playa de Illetes is also nearby, as is the exclusive Bendinat Golf Resort.

Interestingly, the marina also now operates as the headquarters for the exotic sports cars of Mallorca’s annual Classic Car Rally (Rally Clásico Puerto Portals), where you’re able to chat to the drivers as well as lust after the cars. So while Puerto Portals is always an infectious place to tie up, timing your visit to coincide with rally week in early March can make it an even more magical experience.

Towards the end of 2021, we moved into a new larger office where Argo Nautical Limited can celebrate more of a presence within the marina. From our new, modern and luxurious office, we can offer specialist knowledge in:

  • New Boat Sales
  • Pre-owned Sales

Yacht Charter in the Balearic Islands & Mallorca

There’s more to the Balearic Islands than lazy days on the beach and crazy nights on the town, and a yacht charter in Mallorca is the best way to discover exactly what else this part of the Mediterranean has to offer.

Mallorca yacht charter

Where are the Balearic Islands?

Sat just off the eastern coast of Spain, in the middle of the Mediterranean, the Balearic Islands provide as much variety as you’ll find anywhere in Europe, from prehistoric ruins to exclusive boutiques and ancient fishing villages to world-famous night clubs, all set against a backdrop of warm turquoise seas and gloriously golden sandy beaches. There are four islands, each of which offers a different experience from the next.

Ibiza is arguably the most famous – not least for its world-renowned nightclubs – but there’s more to the White Isle than the San Antonio clubbing scene. You can get back to nature by venturing north, and exploring the hidden caves and thick pine forests, or chill out at the hippy markets of Es Cana and San Carlos.

Mallorca is the biggest island and its miles of golden beaches and secluded coves, all of which are delicately touched by the warm Mediterranean, make it a perfect place for yacht charter in the Balearic Islands.

Mallorca yacht charter

If you’re chartering a yacht in the Balearic Islands as part of a family holiday, then Menorca is a worth a visit – life moves a little more slowly and serenely on the quiet beaches of Son Bou and Cala’n Forcat, and you can add education to your schedule by visiting the island’s prehistoric ruins.

Formentera is the smallest and least well-known of the islands, but is no less beautiful – its coastline of white sand contrasts beautifully against the clear blue sea, and its beaches are said to be the very best this side of the island.

What to see on a trip to the Balearic Islands

It’s recommended you implement an itinerary before embarking on a luxury yacht holiday in the Balearic Islands – with so much to do and see and do across these four jewels in the glistening Mediterranean Sea.

Starting at Menorca, the most westerly of the islands, you’ll be greeted by bottle-green coves and shallow turquoise bays at the resorts of Son Bou and Cala’n Forcat, both of which offer the perfect family getaway or peaceful escape. The island is also a great destination for snorkelling, and the wealth of traditional family restaurants means there’s no shortage of authentic, Mediterranean cuisine.

Sailing east to Mallorca, the biggest of the Balearic Islands is a paradise for the rich and famous – the Philippe Starck-designed Port Adriano a must-stop destination to take in the ambience and the high-end gastronomy and glitzy designer stores. And if that’s not quite enough, Palma, the island capital, is home to the best boutiques and restaurants. Elsewhere on the island, there are dozens of picturesque fishing villages, secluded caves, and vineyards where you can please your palette, while the more adventurous can cycle Sa Calobra, a 10-kilometre-long trail that hangs down the side of a mountain.

Continue east and you’ll arrive at Ibiza, where you’ll find more great shopping destinations, from designer goods to local curios, and some of the best nightlife on offer anywhere in the world. And if, after all that, you need to kick back and relax, you can spend a lazy day soaking up the sun, culture and history of the Old Town, or relax on any of the island’s beautiful coves and beaches. And be sure to take in one of the White Isle’s famous sunsets from the deck of your yacht.

Finally, you should venture south to Formentera for some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful, untouched beaches, alongside some of the sea’s best snorkelling at the UNESCO-listed diving sites. The perfect way to relax after an amazing experience taking a yacht charter in the Balearic Islands.

Essential travel information for the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands have a typically Mediterranean, warm, year-round climate, with mild winters and hot summers, which can be sultry but are usually tempered by refreshing sea breezes.

The islands are popular tourist resorts all year around, and get particular busy with every kind of holiday-maker during the summer months, from quiet families to festive youngster. If you travel between August and October, you’ll find the seas are particularly warm and pleasant, while the climate is ideal for sailing any time from March onwards. The Euro is the region’s accepted currency, and the local language is Spanish.

How to charter a yacht in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands

You can access any of the Balearic Islands by sea or air, and we highly recommend exploring the islands by yacht, so you can take things at your own pace and fully appreciate everything that each has to offer.

Princess Charter offers a variety of yachts for charter in the Balearic Islands, ranging from 20 metres to 100 metres in length. To book your perfect getaway, give our team a call 0207 499 5050, or email [email protected]. Alternatively, leave a few details here, and we’ll get right back to you.

Interview with Antony Sheriff

  • By Princess Yachts
  • January 10, 2023

Antony Sheriff

Antony Sheriff, 59, has been the Chairman and CEO of Princess Yachts since January 2016. He previously spent 10 years as Managing Director of McLaren Automotive, during which he established McLaren’s core range of luxury sports cars.

Why did you want to take the role as head of Princess Yachts?

After a decade launching and growing the road-car arm for McLaren, I was looking to join another business where luxury and technicity were key and that had a great deal of potential for development. Princess was it.

But why Princess? What makes it different from other luxury yacht manufacturers?

I could see one very important difference – the enormous depth of substance in the company. Princess has a long history of supplying great boats, made by people who go boating, for boaters. What it didn’t have was the confidence to flourish in the way it could, but I think we are now making that happen.

What particular changes have you seen in the company?

The one clear difference is that, while Princess Yachts continues to make technically exceptional products, it is now very firmly established in the luxury arena.

How have the events of the past two years, notably Covid and Brexit, affected the company in terms of what is built, released and marketed?

As far as Brexit is concerned, I would say that it has been a non-event for Princess. Covid, on the other hand, has made life very complicated indeed from an industrial point of view. The principal problems have been in the supply chain, where our suppliers have not been able to deliver components as a result of their own suppliers not being able to deliver materials, and so on. Our approach to the situation from the very start was not to slow down but to continue going hot and heavy both in terms of fulfilling existing orders and developing new models. It required a great deal of fancy footwork, but forging ahead despite the problems enabled us to introduce great new yachts such as the Y72 and Y95 motor yacht, the X80 super-flybridge yacht, and V50 sports yacht, all of which have been really well received. And, strangely, I would say that Covid had some positive effects on our business because it helped many people to discover that a yacht provides an opportunity to spend true quality time on the water with one’s family in a safe and controlled environment.

Sustainability is currently a major issue. How is this reflected in the superyacht business?

I think it’s fair to say that there is an awful lot of noise in the superyacht industry about sustainability, but very little happening that’s of real substance. Our style at Princess is to go our own way and do what we can to help, but only if it means doing things that make rational sense. Comparisons are often made between superyachts and the development of electrification in the car industry, but it is completely unrealistic to think a large yacht can rely purely on electric power – a car only has to be pushed through the air, but water is a whole lot more viscous and, therefore, a great deal more energy is required to achieve the propulsion needed. We did a back-of-an envelope calculation and concluded that if an X95 was to run purely on electric motors it would require a battery pack that weighs twice as much as the boat itself in order to achieve similar range and performance. Instead of going down that route, we have been focusing on our hulls and now have the most advanced designs in the industry. They are up to 20 per cent more efficient, meaning that the yachts consume less fuel and are, therefore, kinder to the environment.

We have also worked very hard on the packaging of our yachts, so the X95, for example, has the same floor area as our old 35-metre, despite being almost eight metres shorter. The smaller size means less resistance and the boat, therefore, delivers a huge improvement in efficiency. The yard is also working on ways of building boats more efficiently, using more bioresins and eco-materials, reducing waste and so on.

What are the rules and regulations surrounding building cleaner boats and creating less pollution?

The rules, such as they are, are very much in flux. We’re pushing the authorities not to mandate specific technical solutions, but rather to set performance goals so as to encourage creative technical solutions. One problem is that, once built, boats tend to stay on the water for a long time. That means there are a lot of old, inefficient yachts out there, so we should be thinking of what we can do to improve them and make them better for the environment. The impact made by new yachts, which are more efficiently built and more eco-friendly in use, is relatively small by comparison. We are, however, working very closely with powertrain suppliers and looking at alternative fuels, most likely hydrogen or biofuels, but they bring their own challenges in terms of infrastructure. Large yachts are intended to explore in out-of-the-way places – most of which won’t be equipped to supply alternative fuels for years to come.

Yachting is reliant on the state of the seas – what is Princess Yachts doing to ensure they are protected?

We’re adding to our efforts all the time. In 2016, Princess became the first luxury yacht manufacturer to officially partner with the Marine Conservation Society. We’ve worked together to support marine environments, preserve reefs and sea life, with the company becoming the custodian of the Eddystone Reef, an offshore ecosystem outside of Plymouth.

What does it mean to be a UK-based business?

I think it is important that we are a UK company, but what is even more important is where we are based – which is why our logo says ‘Princess Yachts, crafted in Plymouth’. This city has a huge maritime heritage both in terms of the place and its people, and I really believe that lends an added authenticity and credibility to what we do. Princess has been here since its founding in 1965 and all of our manufacturing happens in Plymouth, where we employ more than 3,000 staff across our five sites. We also try to source as much material as possible from local businesses, and items we can’t find locally are largely acquired from other UK suppliers. Our supply chain helps to support around 13,500 additional jobs up and down the country.

What can we expect to see from Princess in the next few years?

Wonderful things! We are certainly not content to sit on our laurels, and one of the things I like to do is to show people images of our previous generations of boats beside our new ones. From one year to another the improvements seem incremental, but when looked at across a five-year time span, it’s easy to see that huge leaps are being taken. We were understandably uncertain how the X-Class super flybridge yachts would be received, but they have proved to be an enormous commercial success – and, most importantly, they have been accepted as being ‘real’ Princess Yachts, even by our most loyal customers. Currently overall production is running in the low 200s of boats per year. Our plan is to get to an optimum output of around 300 yachts – and we’ll have many exciting new designs along the way.

KPS Capital Partners to Acquire Controlling Ownership of Princess Yachts

Investment will Accelerate Company’s Growth and Innovation

New York, NY  (February 13, 2023) -- KPS Capital Partners, LP (“KPS”) announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a controlling equity interest in Princess Yachts (Holdings) Limited, (“Princess Yachts” or the “Company”), a leading global manufacturer of luxury motor yachts.  Existing stockholders will retain ownership in the Company.  Completion of the transaction is expected in the first quarter of 2023 and is subject to customary closing conditions and approvals.

Princess Yachts is a leading builder of luxury motor yachts and is recognized for its timeless design, hand-crafted quality and exceptional seakeeping.  Headquartered in Plymouth, England, the Company’s unparalleled level of vertical integration – including on-site design, engineering and manufacturing – has helped position Princess Yachts as one of Britain’s most iconic luxury brands.  Princess Yachts serves a global customer base through its best-in-class international dealer network.  The Company has approximately 3,200 employees and operates five manufacturing facilities in Plymouth, England.

Ryan Harrison, a Partner of KPS Mid-Cap Investments, said, “We are excited to make this significant investment in Princess Yachts, a leading company in the luxury global yachting industry with an iconic brand grounded in British tradition, a remarkable and growing product range and worldwide reputation for quality and innovation.  KPS’ investment will accelerate Princess’ growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future.  We look forward to working with Princess’ existing stockholders, Chief Executive Officer Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts.”

Antony Sheriff, Chief Executive Officer of Princess Yachts, said, “We are thrilled to partner with KPS for this exciting new chapter for Princess Yachts.  KPS and the Princess Yachts team are deeply committed to investing in the Company’s future while continuing to further strengthen our portfolio of best-in-class motor yachts.  With a current order book nearing a record $1 billion and many model lines sold into 2025, we have never been in a stronger commercial position.  Together with KPS’ tremendous track record of manufacturing excellence and investing in leading brands, we are now positioned to take Princess Yachts to the next level of industry leadership in quality and innovation.  Under KPS’ ownership, we will accelerate a range of growth and operational initiatives to build upon our long and successful history.”

Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP served as legal counsel to KPS.  Macquarie Capital and Latham & Watkins LLP served as financial advisor and legal counsel, respectively, to Princess Yachts.

The boss of Plymouth luxury boat-builder Princess Yachts has left the firm and been replaced in the top job by its commercial director. Antony Sheriff has exited the Stonehouse-headquartered manufacturer after being in charge for more than seven years.

He has been replaced as chief executive by Will Green who steps up from being executive director commercial. The change comes six months after Princess Yachts was taken over by major US private equity firm KPS Capital Partners.

Mr Sheriff took over at Princess Yachts in January 2016. The 59-year-old, Swiss-born, American-Italian had previously headed supercar maker McLaren for a decade before resigning in 2013 and later took the company to court.

During his spell at McLaren he conceived a range of ground-breaking supercars and also brought success to Princess Yachts with profitable growth and increased revenue before it was pitched into losses during the Covid pandemic. He nevertheless steered the company through the worst of the pandemic when it was hit with a “pingdemic” nightmare in 2021 with up to 15% of staff off work and boat building delayed

Princess Yachts said Mr Sheriff is leaving the company to pursue other endeavours and said: “We thank him for his contributions and wish him well.”

The company said his successor, Mr Green, has been a pivotal member of the Princess Yachts team for 20 years, and instrumental in driving the sustained period of commercial success enjoyed by the business in recent years. He has been critical to establishing the company as one of the leading luxury yachts manufacturers in the world today.

Princess Yachts' executive chairman Antony Sheriff

Previously head of UK sales at luxury car manufacturer Aston Martin, Mr Green has overseen the strategic direction of Princess’ global sales, continually developing the customer experience with a highly-professional network of distributors and dealers representing the brand in more than 65 countries worldwide.

Mr Green said: “It is an honour to be appointed chief executive of Princess. Those who know me will recognise the passion I have for the brand, so this is an exciting opportunity to shape the next chapter for the business and build on its amazing legacy.

“I am excited and privileged to work alongside a very talented team which has achieved a long track record of success and, with the support of our controlling shareholder KPS Capital Partners, I know we can build on this further with investment in some key areas and by focusing on what we do best – building exceptional yachts for our customers.’

In February 2023, Princess Yachts was taken over by New York-headquartered KPS Capital Partners when it entered into an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in Princess Yachts (Holdings) Ltd. It said the investment would accelerate the company’s growth and innovation.

Will Green, chief executive of Princess Yachts

Meanwhile, Princess Yachts will be showcasing two “world premieres” at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival with the new Y95 and Y80 being displayed for the first time. The company

will also be announcing two new future models as part of their continued investment in new and innovative product offerings.
