Summer 2024 scheduled classes are now posted.   In addition to our Signature 5 Day/4 Night Couples classes we now offer weekend versions of ASA 103 and ASA 104 that are open to singles and couples.   We are an American Sailing Association Affiliate and offer certifications in ASA 101, 103, 104, 106, 114.

Whether you’re brand new to sailing or you want to receive certification to charter a boat, we’re here to help you take the next step in your sailing journey.    

We’ve decided to rethink what a sailing school can be by building one from the ground up. Forget about sleeping on sofas or eating sack lunches, sailing is luxurious and peaceful and we think sailing schools should be too. 

With just two of us and one boat, every Sail Olympia trip caters to you, whether you sign up for one of our scheduled trips or design a custom trip. 

Why rush? Sailboats are about the joys of learning to slow down and enjoy your experience. 

Can you really sail into the wind? How do you steer the boat? How do you park a boat? What do you do when you meet other boats? What do I do with all those ropes? Is it safe?

Safety and comfort are the primary concerns of all of our classes, but specifically for this class while you get your sea legs. You will learn answers to these questions and so many more. We teach sailing in a comfortable atmosphere and at a relaxed pace. You will learn by doing. 

This class is suitable for a range of experience from complete beginners to day racers.   

This class is offered with an optional ASA 101/103 certification, all the certification material will be covered in the course. Outside Pre-work, and a written test are required for certification. See the ASA 101 -Basic Keelboat Sailing curriculum for additional details. ASA 101/103 are the first in the series of three classes required to gain charter boat credentials. Testing fees, books and ASA registration fee not included.

INTERMEDIATE Couples SAILING

Asa 103 / asa 104.

Unless you took beginning sailing with us, you likely learned to sail on a small daysailer with an outboard motor and few if any electronics.   This class extends and refines the skills in ASA 101 on a large cruising class boat with state of the art electronics. You will learn sail trim,  navigation, lots of docking practice, mechanical systems, navigation systems and electronic systems, You will also learn about crew roles and responsibilities and how to to plan and provision a safe trip for you and your crew. With the completion of this course, you will be certified to charter a sail boat up to 45′ around the world. See the ASA 104  curricula for certification details, pre-work and exam are required for certification.  ASA 103 can be earned with this class. Call to determine the best class choice.

Pre-requisite : ASA 101 or equivalent sailing experience.  Testing out of 101 is only available on private trips.

ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising

2 day classes, overnight on board optional.

ASA 103 can be earned with this class. This course directly follows ASA 101.  It is recommended, but not required, that you have extra sailing time on the water prior to taking ASA 103. The new course ASA 102 is not part of the charter boat certification sequence and is advanced sailing targeting for racing boats.  The key skills taught in this class are: ability to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered (inboard or outboard engine) keelboat of approximately 25 to 35 feet in length by day in moderate winds (up to 20 knots) and sea conditions. Knowledge of cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather interpretation, safety, and seamanship. See the  ASA 103  curricula for certification details, pre-work and exam are required for certification. 

This is a day-sail course, not a trip.  Pre-requisite : ASA 101

How does the boat insurance work?

Boat insurance typically covers loss caused by things such as fire, sinking, storms, and collisions. The extent of the coverage varies depending on the policy.

Do I need my own insurance to rent a boat?

You do not need boat insurance when renting with Boatsetter. Coverage is provided under the Peer-to-Peer Boat Rental Policy, which is underwritten by GEICO Marine Insurance Company. The policy was written from the ground up as a stand-alone recreational boat rental insurance policy covering the period of time that the boat is being rented and is available for all non-commercially insured boats.

Does Boatsetter screen renters?

Yes. We use a system called Cognito to ensure that payment information matches the renter's identity. We also require renters taking out a captained boat to be at least 18 years old and on a bareboat to be at least 25 years old.

Is listing my boat on Boatsetter free?

Yes! Listing a boat is completely free. We only take a commission when your boat is rented. We only make money when you do!

What if I'm not comfortable having a renter drive my boat?

If you are not comfortable having a renter drive your boat, we have an expansive network of licensed and experienced captains. Once your boat is listed, you can filter through our network of captains and favorite captains in your area that you would like to operate your boat.

What I had thought would be a nice, relaxing, and peaceful sailing experience actually turned out to only fuel my fury. After making the decision to move to another state, I wanted to book something special for myself so I reached out to book a sunset sail. After exchanging a few emails, and me specifically asking about payment, I was given the following response, "Yes we can do Sunday September 4 from 6 to 8 PM. There is no need for a deposit to hold that date. You can cancel at any time without a problem. If it's raining we won't go out. You may pay on the 4th. So as you see, we are pretty relaxed in our operations. When covid started, we tossed the rules out the window and it has proven to be much less stressful for everyone." He then went on to say, "Here are the four methods of payment: Paypal, Venmo, Cash, or Check. The total for a 2 hour cruise is $328.20. Let me know how you want to pay then that's all the information I need from you. Then I will send you a confirmation email that outlines exactly when and where we meet at the marina and other details." Since he said I didn't need to pay until the 4th, I waited until the date got closer. I reached out to him to ensure they got paid so I asked if he'd send me an invoice on paypal and give me the address for the marina so I could put in my GPS. He responded and said that he booked it for someone else because he had not heard from me in 13 days. I'm not sure why I needed to respond if he clearly said I didn't need to pay until the 4th. He mentioned "13 days" as if this was his deciding factor to book someone else. I believed I already had a reservation since he told me the date was available and there was no need to put a deposit to hold the spot. Now, apparently, I'm being punished for not paying.... and he didn't even call or email to let me know someone else wanted that time slot. It just doesn't make sense. He did apologize, but he made no effort to fix this. I told him he needed to get better at communicating with his guests and he agreed. But in any event, I'm the only one who takes a loss for this. So now I'll be leaving Washington without the experience. I told a lot of people about this sail boat cruise and everyone was excited that I was doing something for myself to get a little peace before I left. Now I'll have to go back and tell all those people that I didn't get to go because the "captain" couldn't handle his calendar and apparently the rules that were thrown out, only apply to those who have paid in advance, even though he says you don't have to. Smh. If you're looking for peace, don't use this service. If you like being let down and frustrated, definitely give them a try. What a joke.

Again, I apologize. Our practice is to communicate via email or voice until all the questions are answered such as date, time, number of guests, method of payment and amount. Once all the details are settled, I put it on the calendar and send out a confirmation email. My last message did say," Let me know how you want to pay then that's all the information I need from you. Then I will send you a confirmation email..." Since I was still waiting on a reply, I did not send a confirmation. 13 days later someone else called me up to reserve that date. Not seeing anything on my calendar or in my list of confirmed bookings, I scheduled their charter and sent them a confirmation. We are just a small mom and pop operation and try to do the best we can. This is the only time we've had a double booking situation. This is the only time we've received anything but a five star rating. Between Yelp, Google, and Trip Advisor we have 76 five star reviews and 1 one star review. It's too bad we had a communication problem. Sometimes these things happen. I'm sure that if you had been able to join us for a cruise on Budd Bay you would have come away from the experience with great memories. Amanda, I see that you do a lot of reviews, 408 at this time! What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with some good friends on board! Don't hesitate to book your sailing experience with Mystic Journeys. I booked a cruise for my fiance and her friends, and they loved it. During the booking process, Capt. Scott was professional, and kept me informed. When I saw them off at the dock, he was very friendly. I'm no sailor, but he struck me as competent and seemed like he took safety seriously. The boat appeared to be in good shape and clean. The group came back with glowing reviews. They loved their time on the Sound, and had only good things to say about the crew. I would absolutely book with him again, and would recommend it to others.

A perfect morning on the water in Olympia. Capt. Scot and his first mate Connie were charming and friendly. Our children and grandchildren enjoyed every minute. Hoisting the sails, taking the till, learning about the lower Puget Sound filled our day. We saw dolphins, seals and the magnificent views of the Budd Inlet. A highly recommended trip.

Went sailing for the first time with my husband and parents and we all had an amazing time! Captain Rick and his wife Ada were great! Would love to sail again!

Had a great first sailing experience! Took my parents on the Budd Bay tour. Got the opportunity to raise the sails and even drive the boat! Learned some about sailing and different sailing terms. We were able to bring whatever drinks and snacks we wanted, they provided a fruit tray and some drinks. Ada even served us as we enjoyed the ride. It was a nice boat and owned by a very nice couple! Captain Rick and Ada made sure we had a nice, relaxing experience.

After exchanging our wedding vows, we spent a delightful afternoon cruising Budd Bay on the Traveller enjoying cake and champagne with our guests. Captain Scott and First Mate Connie were friendly and thoughtful helping make the day even more memorable. Highly recommend for any small special gathering. Weather was perfect too!

We had a fabulous time with captain Scott! 4 adults and 2 kids ages 4 and 6. The food and drinks weren't fantastic. Connie sang for us and pointed out jellyfish. Captain Scott let the kids sail the boat-they were beyond excited! I highly recommend chartering them. If I were in town longer I would do it again for the sunset tour.

My husband and I just celebrated our anniversary with a cruise. What a fun experience and the gorgeous weather certainly didn't hurt. Captain Rick and crew were professional and personable. We'd certainly do it again!
