Boat of the Week: Meet the 443-Foot ‘Sunrise,’ the World’s Largest Open Sport Gigayacht

At 443 feet, this gigayacht will be the largest day boat ever. beyond size, its wave-piercing hull and 24-knot top end are breakthroughs., michael verdon, michael verdon's most recent stories.

Sunrise is the world's largest open yacht, measuring 433 feet in length

Designing a 443-foot day boat sounds like an exercise in madness, or perhaps futility, if the designer ever hopes to find a buyer. But Italian designer Roberto Curto is used to breaking through established norms, even if what lies on the other side is more fantasy than working vessel.

The Genoa studio’s newest project, Sunrise, might seem like one of those impossible dreams, if it didn’t look so damned beautiful. The boat stretches from stern to bow in a gentle arc that emphasizes four football fields’ worth of exterior space, with a large but organic-looking superstructure that hugs the water, rather than jutting upwards across multiple decks towards the sky.

“The idea was to have a big yacht that doesn’t look like a traditional wedding cake,” says Jim Evans, managing director of SuperYachtsMonaco , the agency tasked with finding a buyer for Sunrise. “Because it’s missing all those layers, it doesn’t have a huge amount of interior volume or weight. It’ll have the more traditional uses of an open day boat.”

Project Sunrise is the world's largest open day boat in a gigayacht size.

An open design and 66-foot beam allowed the designer to create mega-pools and other supersized exterior spaces across Sunrise.  Courtesy Roberto Curto Design

“I wanted to bring the sport life to gigayachts,” adds Curto. “At the moment, there is nothing this radical.”

The concept is more than a set of drawings displaying a beautiful boat. Curto designed a wave-piercing hull for the bow that actually slides under waves when confronted with big seas, providing stability and speed in rough conditions. “It’s similar to the hulls on some submarines and military vessels,” says Curto. “I have a 34-foot boat that I designed with the same hull and it works fine, so I expect it will work on this larger scale.”

The submerged bow seems like it would actually perform in real-world conditions, thanks to the long, open forefoot on the forward end.

Project Sunrise is the world's largest open day boat in a gigayacht size.

Besides looking cool, the wave-piercing bow actually submerges under water in big seas–similar to some naval vessels–to increase efficiency in rough conditions.  Courtesy Roberto Curto Design

In the images, Sunrise is certainly an open design, but there are no people to show how vast—giga-sized—the spaces really are. The swim platform, for instance, is about 36 feet deep and, thanks to the 66-foot beam, the aft swimming pool is a good 50 feet wide. An outdoor dining table seats 22. On the bow are another large pool, helipad, and even a jet-ski docking area. To get a sense of scale, running four laps along Sunshine’s edges would equal a mile.

The reason why the concept works is that Curto didn’t try to fill the space with dozens of small rooms across five or six decks. Some gigas feel like a maze in a massive hull. Curto, instead, kept the spaces simple, open and zen-like across the yacht.

A massive, atrium-like entrance to the interior, defined by huge glass panels, is connected to the long bow. The main salon has a sculpture shaped like a giant drop of rain splattering on the floor, with open circular panels extending through the decks above, as if it had just fallen from the sky. Round white concentric circles designed into the floor show the drop’s splatter pattern. A few lounges and tables are placed within, but otherwise the space is vast and empty.

On the upper deck is an observation lounge which, apart from the pilothouse, another exterior lounge area, gym, dining area and the staterooms, is pretty much the complete layout. The owner’s suite, like the main salon, is immense, with its own gym and outdoor patio. The tender garage in the lower deck is also enormous, with space for multiple boats and water toys.

The hull design gives Sunrise a top end of 24 knots; Curto is working with an engine builder to create a hybrid electric-diesel propulsion system using azipods at the stern for speed and efficiency gains.

In the end, however, the main impression is the yacht’s elegant, open design, with the subtle curves. “One thing we’ve noticed in the last five years is the growing demand for extra-luxurious exterior spaces,” says Evans. “The exterior needs to be just as exclusive as the interior.”

Project Sunrise is the world's largest open day boat in a gigayacht size.

Evans would like to see scaled-down versions of the yacht, perhaps 250 or 300 feet, that would have a larger potential pool of buyers. Still, he’s very happy with the design. “If I’d challenged other yacht designers in the beauty parade with a concept like this, they’d come back with something quite conventional, akin to a small cruise ship,” he says. “A lot of clients will be attracted to a design like Sunrise. They’ll really like the sporty lines and the fact that it still looks like a private yacht, despite the giga size.”

For Curto, buyer or not, Sunrise remains an exercise in creativity. “It’s really there to push the limits, to let clients see we can create something different,” he says. “We see it as innovation on the water.”

Sunrise: the homegrown yacht

A hands-on owner explains why he enjoyed realising his vision on a yacht designed for his family.

For the owner of Sunrise , what first began as leisurely summer holidays spent cruising the Turkish coastline on board traditional gulets has today transpired to be a lifelong passion for building superyachts. In July 2020, Sunrise, built by Yildiz Gemi shipyard in Istanbul – the same yard that built the iconic Maltese Falcon – was successfully delivered. It bears an exterior design by Ginton Naval Architects and a custom interior by Hot Lab, but the hero of this new build story is the owner himself, for he made the unusual choice of renting a shipyard and going it alone.

Sunrise is his fourth yacht, and the fourth example of a boat he has built in a rented shipyard. His first foray into this brave new world occurred in 1988. “I decided to build my own motoryacht in İstanbul with a boatbuilding friend who imports wood and teak into Turkey,” he says. Two more boats followed – a 26 metre in 1991, and a 34 metre in 2005 – enabling family fun cruising the waters of Turkey, Croatia and Montenegro. “It’s been my hobby for 30 years,” he says simply, but it’s a hobby that benefits from his growing shipbuilding expertise and a deep and confident knowledge base.

Sunrise: the homegrown yacht

“He likes to have full control over the project,” says Deniz Yilmazer, owner’s representative and captain of Sunrise . “He chooses the builders himself and carries out all the negotiations, even selecting the suppliers and materials that will be used for the yacht build. He knows what he wants, and he likes realising his vision.”

Like most yacht owners, his needs and wishes have changed gradually over time – his family has grown, as have his list of onboard pursuits, such as scuba diving, fishing, videography and sailing. With his heart set on a substantial 43 metre to better cater for these interests, he embarked on the Sunshine build in Yildiz in 2016, this time with the design expertise of Milan-based studio Hot Lab .

“Hot Lab had some other projects running in Tuzla at the same time that I visited the yard,” explains the owner. “I am accustomed to an Italian designer from my previous boats, and Hot Lab is a young team with flexible ideas, client-oriented and very easy to work with.”

Sunrise: the homegrown yacht

“In less than an hour we had agreed on all the design and contract principles,” says Antonio Romano, Hot Lab co-founder. “He was looking for a family-oriented motoryacht for personal use and thanks to his previous experience was able to provide a detailed brief, which was a great help for both us and the shipyard.”

Sunrise features an unconventional interior layout, with the master stateroom overlooking the open aft deck on the upper deck. She is also fitted with a lift that services all three decks, while the tenders and toys are stored ‘explorer-style’ on the open foredeck, allowing for a beach club in the stern. Walnut, Macassar ebony and honey afzelia woodwork in checkerboard panels in the interior are paired with chrome, nacre and woven leather finishes. It’s an interior that reflects the owner’s culture and tastes while satisfying three generations of family members’ needs.

Central to the owner’s brief was the ability to drop anchor in every possible bay. He spends long periods of time on board, typically cruising each week during peak season. “He wanted to create a private space for himself on board, so we built an upper deck area in front of his cabin,” says Yilmazer. “We also included a room dedicated to his hobbies, which contains a diving compressor, all kinds of fishing equipment, and there is enough room on board to accommodate a laser sailboat and a jet ski.”

Sunrise: the homegrown yacht

The southern coast of Turkey

It’s little surprise that the owner’s favourite place on board is the beach club, along with his private balcony. But his desire to keep learning has not abated. “He loves to spend time with me in the wheelhouse, as he is so curious and interested in the boat’s capabilities,” says Yilmazer. “We hold our meetings there when we are cruising between destinations.”

While the shipyard’s expertise cannot be overlooked, for an owner to seize control of the major decisions, including hiring subcontractors for the job, is undoubtedly an unusual and risky business. But for the owner of Sunrise , it is where his enjoyment derives. “I was involved throughout the entire design and build stage, and did the whole process together with the shipyard,” he says proudly. It’s a level of commitment and capability that can only be admired.

“The level of attention the owner dedicated to the project was quite extraordinary,” says Burak Akgül, CEO of Yildiz . “As always, the interiors commanded a substantial proportion of his attention and Hot Lab’s ability to render his family’s vision was exemplary. The result is a very happy owner.”

Yacht Rental North Carolina

One might ponder, why indeed would an adventurer select the seemingly tranquil North Carolina waters to charter a yacht, when they could seek the azure expanses of the Mediterranean or the exotic depths of the South Pacific? There's a peculiar allure to these Atlantic coastal waters, not unlike the hypnotic patterns on a Northern Cardinal's plumage, enchanting, captivating, and yet wholly unexpected.

The Nautical Call of the Tar Heel State

Yacht Rental North Carolina

The magic of North Carolina lies in its diversity. Not merely terrestrial, but maritime as well. The waters here oscillate between the tranquil ripples of inland rivers and the grand swells of the open ocean, each offering a unique tableau of aquatic experiences. From the Cape Fear River, with its winding path and historic charm, to the sprawling banks of the Neuse and Pamlico, North Carolina's waterways are as variegated as the shifting sands of its beaches.

Aboard a yacht, one gets to witness this splendor from an unparalleled vantage point. It's akin to soaring through the rainforest canopy, glimpsing the intricate tapestry of life beneath, yet being part of a separate, ethereal realm. Hence, renting a yacht in North Carolina is not simply a voyage, but an intimate dance with the very essence of the state.

Unveiling the Hidden Gems: Places to Visit with a Yacht in North Carolina

Navigating through the waters of North Carolina in a chartered yacht is akin to embarking on a nature documentary, full of unexpected vistas and encounters. Here, we shall examine a collection of the most compelling stops along this maritime journey.

🚢 Cape Lookout National Seashore

Renowned as a nature-lover's sanctuary, the Cape Lookout National Seashore is a string of barrier islands located off the coast. With its signature black-and-white diamond patterned lighthouse standing sentinel, it's a haven for a variety of wildlife, from shorebirds like terns and oystercatchers to the vibrant sea turtles that frequent its shores. The quiet beauty of its waters, punctuated only by the occasional dolphin fin, offers a serene sojourn for those in search of tranquillity.

Dubbed as "America's Favorite Town" by Travel + Leisure, Beaufort, North Carolina is steeped in maritime history and charm. Nestled within the protected waters of the Beaufort Inlet, it offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. The historic waterfront town is home to the North Carolina Maritime Museum and a bounty of delectable seafood restaurants, while the nearby Rachel Carson Reserve hosts a diverse collection of estuarine species, including the iconic wild horses.

🚢 Wrightsville Beach

This family-friendly destination offers a mixture of leisure and excitement. The Intracoastal Waterway and the serene Masonboro Island are a stone’s throw away. Here, one might indulge in water sports, birdwatching, or simply lounging on the sun-dappled decks of their yacht, lulled by the gentle ebb and flow of the Atlantic tides.

🚢 Bald Head Island

Accessible only by ferry or private yacht, Bald Head Island is an unspoiled treasure on North Carolina's coast. Here, you can drop anchor and explore a network of walking trails that weave through maritime forests and sand dunes, culminating at the Old Baldy Lighthouse. The island is a refuge for a rich tapestry of wildlife, including deer, alligators, and myriad bird species, making it a veritable Eden for naturalists.

🚢 Pamlico Sound

As the largest lagoon along the North American East Coast, Pamlico Sound is a sprawling playground for sailors. It is dotted with charming islands, each with their own unique allure. Ocracoke Island, for instance, is famed for its wild ponies and quaint village, while Roanoke Island bears the historical legacy of the first English settlement in the New World.

🚢 Outer Banks

This 200-mile long string of narrow barrier islands is a must-visit for any maritime adventurer. The Outer Banks are home to some of the most secluded beaches on the East Coast, offering a tranquil retreat far from the madding crowd. Each island holds its own unique charm, from the wild horses of Corolla to the historic Graveyard of the Atlantic in Hatteras.

🚢 Morehead City

Nestled on the Crystal Coast, Morehead City is renowned for its vibrant port and the annual North Carolina Seafood Festival. Chartering a yacht here provides the opportunity to explore not only the bustling city waterfront but also the surrounding waters, including the Newport River and the Bogue Sound. The area is also a paradise for fishing enthusiasts, with its rich marine life.

🚢 The Intracoastal Waterway

The North Carolina section of the Intracoastal Waterway offers a unique exploration opportunity. This network of rivers, inlets, canals, and bays is like an aquatic highway, threading through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the state. Stopovers such as Swansboro, known as the "Friendly City by the Sea," provide charming glimpses of coastal life, while the vast expanse of the Albemarle Sound awaits with its stunning sunsets and tranquil waters.

🚢 Lake Norman

While not a coastal destination, Lake Norman offers a different kind of yachting experience. As the largest manmade body of water in North Carolina, it offers over 500 miles of shoreline to explore. The lake's vast expanse is dotted with islands and inlets, making it a perfect playground for boating enthusiasts. Here, one can enjoy the tranquility of the lake, the thrill of water sports, or the charm of the surrounding towns.

🚢 Southport

At the confluence of the Cape Fear River, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean, Southport is a quintessential maritime destination. This charming coastal town is renowned for its historic riverfront, maritime museum, and the annual North Carolina 4th of July Festival. The surrounding waters offer a diverse tableau, from the placid river to the open ocean, providing an enriching experience for every mariner.

With every new destination, the maritime landscape of North Carolina unfolds like a captivating narrative, inviting the explorer to delve deeper into its stories. So let the compass guide you, let the winds steer you, and let the infinite waters of North Carolina etch memories that will last a lifetime.

The Naturalist's Guide to Chartering: Considerations for a North Carolina Yacht Adventure

Yacht Rental North Carolina

Before embarking on your maritime adventure, however, one should not neglect the necessary precautions, much like a seasoned biologist preparing for a field study. The beauty of nature is matched by its unpredictability, and a prudent explorer respects this delicate balance.

⛵ Seasons and Weather

North Carolina's maritime climate is temperate, yet diverse. One must be mindful of this, akin to an ornithologist anticipating migratory patterns. The balmy summers offer serene conditions, perfect for lazy days of leisure aboard your yacht. Conversely, the winter months can be capricious, with the northern winds stirring the waters into a frothy challenge for any mariner.

The geography of North Carolina's coastline, with its many estuaries and inlets, provides the explorer with both a vast playground and a complex labyrinth. Just as one might navigate the understory in a dense forest, understanding the local sea charts and tides is essential for a safe journey.

⛵ Flora and Fauna

The abundance of life in these waters is a treasure chest waiting to be discovered. Just as a botanist would relish the discovery of a new orchid species, so too will you marvel at the schools of bluefish, the playful dolphins, and the majestic ospreys that call these waters home. Nonetheless, respect their domain, for we are mere guests in this aquatic abode.

Choosing Your Marine Steed: The Best Yacht for North Carolina Waters

Choosing the appropriate vessel for your journey is akin to an entomologist selecting the right net for a butterfly expedition. Not every yacht is suitable for these diverse waters, and the right choice can make the difference between a memorable journey and a troubling ordeal.

Consider, for instance, the allure of a sailboat. Its elegance mirrors the grace of a heron in flight, and it moves with the wind, a silent observer of the marine world. Sailboats are ideal for the calm, inland waters of North Carolina, where the wind and current are allies, not adversaries.

However, for those seeking the thrill of the open ocean, a motor yacht is the marine equivalent of a sturdy jeep traversing the savannah. Robust, reliable, and offering a suite of modern comforts, these yachts are designed to weather the caprices of the Atlantic, offering a sturdy refuge amidst the marine wilderness.

To navigate North Carolina's waters is to step into a vibrant aquatic ballet, where every ripple tells a story and every sunset paints a memory. So whether you're a seasoned mariner or a curious adventurer, remember: The journey is the destination, and in North Carolina, the journey is always remarkable.

Posing Queries on the Voyage: Frequently Asked Questions

Embarking on a maritime journey, especially amidst the diverse waterscape of North Carolina, invariably brings with it a cascade of questions. Just as we marvel at the intricate patterns on a butterfly's wing or the elusive behavior of a lynx in the wild, so too might we ponder the nuances of chartering a yacht, navigating the waters, or understanding the local maritime regulations.

As we journey together through this aquatic tapestry, let us attempt to unravel some of these queries. Drawing from our collective experiences and insights, we shall endeavour to provide clarity to the frequently asked questions, transforming uncertainties into knowledge, much like turning the lens of a microscope to bring the minute details of a specimen into focus.

What qualifications do I need to rent a yacht?

In North Carolina, as in many other states, there are no strict licensing requirements to rent a yacht. However, most yacht rental companies require some evidence of boating experience. If you're not an experienced sailor, fear not. Many companies offer captains or guides who can handle the nautical intricacies while you sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Can I bring my pets on board?

The answer to this question is largely dependent on the individual yacht charter companies' policies. Some are quite welcoming of your furry friends, recognizing the joy they bring to a family adventure. However, others may have restrictions or additional fees. We would recommend contacting the charter company beforehand to clarify their pet policy.

What safety precautions should I take?

Much like a seasoned naturalist venturing into unexplored wilderness, safety should be paramount in your maritime journey. Ensure that the yacht is equipped with all necessary safety gear, including life jackets, first aid kits, flares, and fire extinguishers. Keep a close eye on the weather, and always inform someone ashore of your planned itinerary.

What should I pack for my yacht charter?

Think of packing for your yacht charter as preparing for a trek through diverse biomes. Essentials would include comfortable clothing suited to the climate, hats and sunglasses for sun protection, and waterproof gear. Don't forget your camera or binoculars, for North Carolina's waters are teeming with photo-worthy moments. And of course, pack a sense of adventure!

Can I fish from the yacht?

In general, fishing is permitted from charter yachts. However, bear in mind that North Carolina requires a fishing license for anyone aged 16 and above. Ensure that you adhere to local fishing regulations and respect the marine life, akin to the reverence a botanist would show when collecting rare plant specimens.

In our quest for understanding, let's remember that every question asked and answered brings us closer to a harmonious interaction with nature and our surroundings. Our voyage on North Carolina's waters is not merely a journey, but a conversation with the environment we traverse. As always, let's converse with respect, curiosity, and a profound appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.
