A vibrant boating focused community enjoying everything the cape fear region has to offer..

Founded in 2014, Southport Yacht Club (SYC) is focused on boating! Our goal is to spend time off the dock and on the water in the North Carolina Cape Fear Region.  Our club is a great place to learn about the regional waters, acquire additional boating skills, develop friendships, and feel part of a community.  The club is 100% percent volunteer based and our members organize sailboat races/regattas, cruises, educational seminars, and super fun events throughout the year.

Our goal for this website is to provide you a snapshot of everything SYC has to offer.  For our members this site has a Member’s Only section where you can learn about upcoming events and shop our  “Ship’s Store”.   If you are a prospective member or just interested in the club, we hope you spend time on our website to see what we are all about!

Established in 1946, Southport Yacht Club has a beautiful setting with panoramic views of their multimillion dollar 300 berth Private Marina and of the Southport Broadwater. Dining can be enjoyed from the Waterfront Restaurant, whatever your desire, they have the dining facilities and setting in which to kick back, unwind and enjoy the scenery. Southport Yacht Club's Clubhouse is complete with two major function rooms. The Compass Room, located on level one, accommodates their larger events, from wedding receptions, corporate functions and birthdays through to more exquisite cocktail parties, whilst their unique sun drenched Western Lawn with boardroom and grassed Eastern Lawn provide a natural marine canvas for any occasion. Southport Yacht Club is known worldwide for its exceptional sailing, power boat and fishing fraternities, incorporating everything boating -from power boats, dinghies, one design-racing, trailer sailors, to cruising yachts and elite racing yachts. While the big boats are based at Main Beach, Hollywell offers excellent facilities and a supportive environment for all levels of sailing expertise with sailing camps and learn to sail courses offered. Finally Southport Yacht Club's private retreat, Dux, is located on South Stradbroke Island and proves to be a very popular weekend destination for many members.

First month of entries for the 2024 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race

Entries for the 38th Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), opened one month ago. With the entries of highly competitive yachts including a handfull of mini maxis the race is shaping up to be a great battle once again. Competitors will start the challenging 384 NM offshore race on Sydney Harbour at 1 pm (AEST) on Saturday 27 July, before heading up the NSW coast to finish off Main Beach on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

Since it first launched in 1986, the Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race has continued to grow in prestige. It is a key race in Australia’s offshore calendar and has become an important test bed for boats and crews in the lead-up to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The Noakes Sydney Gold Coast is the opening race of the 2024/25 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore, which features six races, culminating in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia is the race organiser, and Southport Yacht Club is the race finishing partner, while Noakes Group is the race sponsor.

The overall winner of the 2023 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race was Anthony Johnston’s Reichel/Pugh 72 URM Group, closely followed by Craig Douglas’ Beneteau First 47.7 Popeye, with Michael Smith’s Kernan 44 Tempo taking the last podium spot in the overall IRC rankings.

So far, 24 yachts have entered the race under IRC, with 8 more yachts joining the ranks under PHS. With just 60 days left before the race start and more entries coming in, it will be another exciting race north. Adding to the excitement is an IRC rule change, which encourages competitors to increase diversity and provide opportunities to female and youth crew.

Last year, the CYCA moved to a single rating system (IRC) for its offshore races, this change went into effect from the 2023 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race and applied to all races in the 2023/24 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore. This remains the case in this year’s Pointscore.

In the Notice of Race (section 7),changes to the IRC Rules is outlined. One of these changes (section 7.e) talks to IRC rule 22.4.1 (crew number) and IRC rule 22.4.2 (crew weight).

These rules are modified when a boat’s crew includes a minimum of two female crew members, two youth crew members (under the age of 23 years on the day of the start of the race), or one female and one youth crew member. When a boat satisfies at least one of these requirements, a boat may carry one person more than the crew number printed on the certificate. Additionally, the crew weight shall not exceed 85kg multiplied by one more than the Crew Number printed on the certificate. This rule change has been implemented to promote diversity and inclusivity in the fleet’s crew.

Southport Junior Yacht Club Sailing Foundation

Registration begins January 15, 2024 .  Families will be able to register online via Camp Doc, indicating the sessions they wish to attend.    Enrollment in Sailing Program classes is limited.  

Here are a couple helpful tips on the process:

FOR REGISTRATION - January 15, 2024 :

Step 1: Create a Camp Doc Account  for your family that can be used to enroll one or more participants.  If you are requesting a scholarship please fill out the forms in the Camp Doc account.  Here is the link to CampDoc:    ​ app.campdoc.com/register/sjs

Note:  Due to Battle of the Bays Regatta, the morning progam MAY not meet during session 3 one morning during the week.  It will either be the 9th or the 10th.

Please note that you will need to complete the registration and submit payment for each participant separately.

2024 SAILING PROGRAM PRICING

Each additional week of sailing is $195.00 

Payment: You can pay via BANK ACCOUNT (online check) or CREDIT CARD. We prefer direct payment from your bank account to minimize the fees paid by the nonprofit Foundation. 

Camp Doc Insurance is completely optional. Please scroll down to the bottom of the page to decline coverage.

Scholarships are available to offset tuition.  Apply through the Camp Doc registration site.

Discounts are offered to families who let the sailing program use their boat for the summer. We are a community sailing program relying on the generosity of local families to share their boats.  The discount for providing a Turnabout is $250 , while the discount for an Opti is $75 .
