There’s a theme that is repeated on countless yachts large and small the world over – superyachting, for most, is not about being seen but rather the opposite. It’s about yacht families and their friends enjoying precious, private moments away from the pressures of demanding business lives and the long hours running those businesses can entail.

“I have an extended family, and when our schedules allow we all like to gather on the yacht and spend some quality time as a family,” Douglas Barrowman , owner of the yacht Turquoise , told Superyacht Life back in 2017. “There is no place like a yacht for family togetherness.”

Superyachts and yacht ownership are also a way to explore the world around us, and to interact with and grow to understand extraordinarily diverse communities from remote Pacific islands to the Scandinavian Arctic. It’s something that inspired tech entrepreneur Jasper Smith to combine his love of adventure and his love of the sea with an opportunity for owners to give back while indulging their passion.

“I have always had a deep passion for the ocean,” Smith says. “I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau movies and being enthralled at the idea of being challenged by an endeavour.” When he set out to find his own perfect explorer yacht, however, he realised it didn’t yet exist. His answer was to create Arksen. “My aim with Arksen was to create the perfect machines to enable adventure,” he enthuses. “I also wanted to build sustainable boats which considered full life cycles, from material sourcing to recycling.”

That’s not all – Arksen also asks owners of its yachts to sign up to a pledge it calls 10% for the Ocean, where they will donate 10% of their vessel’s time to philanthropic activities. “A lot of people who have the money feel a responsibility to try and make sure that the oceans are well looked after,” Smith explains. “The people that are attracted to Arksen are passionate about the ocean and want to go off on slightly more advanced expeditions and trips. With that audience, there is a tremendous buy-in to the boat being for more than just their own purposes.”

From family time to time spent embracing the global family, superyacht owners have a far greater positive impact than many assume from preconceived ideas about what a superyacht is and the sort of person who owns or charters one. It’s one of the reasons The Superyacht Life Foundation, in association with the Monaco Yacht Show , has unveiled The Honours, which is a way to celebrate the people of our industry rather than the yachts which so often get sole focus. It’s about recognising the extraordinary contributions that people make, the change they inspire, the opportunities they create, and the lives they change.

On 26 September, the eve of the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, three honourees – nominated by people from across the superyacht industry, and selected from a shortlist by an expert panel of industry judges – will be feted for their work and contribution to superyachting. These are industry professionals and yacht owners who epitomise what superyachting can do. These are people who highlight the good in the superyachting good life.

Yacht owners, impactful journeys

All around the globe, yacht owners are enjoying precious time on their yachts with family and friends, and many are also realising that their yachts can be a force for good and for change, tying in with their philanthropic works and humanitarian endeavours.

“Our yacht is a platform for much of our life,” offers Joe Anderson , co-owner of the Benovia Winery in California with his wife, Mary Dewane. “For instance, we used it at a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis in Baltimore at the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner event. The Blue Angels were flying overhead and used Bella Una [the couple’s yacht] as a GPS coordinate and performed flybys, tipping their wings at us. It was quite a thrill. Having a yacht is a way to keep the family intact, enjoy time with friends and have fun.”

If this were a real James Bond scenario, it would be a darn good one. A James Bond-themed superyacht, aptly called 007 and restyled to resemble something the world-famous spy would sail, has been refloated, six full months after it was intentionally run aground.

On September 2, 2022, 007 ran aground off the coast of Greece, in Kolona Bay, some 15 meters (49.2 feet) from the beach. Initial reports said that some kind of navigation error had steered the vessel off course, so it hit rocks when it entered shallow waters. The hull was pierced and it started taking on water, so, to prevent it from sinking into deeper waters, the captain ran it aground.

After that, 007 tilted to the port side and eventually capsized, ending up on its side. It spent the next six months that way, with authorities seemingly in no rush to salvage it, though they did put up floating walls to keep pollution under control. As of this moment, the exact damages to the ecosystem are unknown.

On March 6, Greek authorities began the salvage operation, which concluded on March 22, with 007 refloated. If this happened in a James Bond movie, it would probably be the scene before the end credits, and Bond himself (Bond, James Bond) would make an appearance alongside the lady of the moment, and they would kiss as the camera would zoom out on the beautiful vessel, back in an upright position.

But this is no movie, and the situation continues to remain very strange, beyond the fact that authorities waited half a year to remove a vessel that posed a danger to the picturesque area.

By the looks of things, 007 has been abandoned by the owner, a millionaire businessman who was also the captain, amid claims that he deliberately ran it aground for other reasons than those having to do with the danger of sinking. One particular report, included in the second video available at the bottom of the page, says that he did it because the ship was no longer seaworthy and may have had severe balance issues brought on by repeated modifications to the hull.

Delivered in 2006 by Aegean Yachts as Royal Enterprise, 007 was initially a 32-meter (105-foot) that was modified extensively in subsequent refits. When it ran aground, it was 49 meters (160 feet) long and featured all the trappings of larger superyachts, including a touch-and-go helipad and an additional deck that wasn’t in the original design by Yavuz Mete.

According to the latest reports in the Greek media, the millionaire owner has been given one month to recover his superyacht, now that it’s been refloated, after which he will be liable to huge fines. Whether he’s actually coming back for it, after it spent half a year half-underwater, remains to be seen

Baglietto is a name synonymous with quality and the launch of 41m superyacht FRANCESCA II from the shipyard in La Spezia, Italy showcases their pioneering yacht building expertise.

With the team from Francesco Paszkowski Design behind the exterior and interior design, plus naval architecture by Baglietto , she is a superb example of the collaborative design and build approach. The champagne-coloured hull and bold shape give her a striking profile which is further enhanced by her high level of customisation. Her impressive performance capabilities give speeds of up to 33 knots from 3 MTU 12V2000 M97 engines and the 3-hydrojet propulsion system.

The layout has been designed to the specifications of the new owner and features a sizable main deck aft with steps leading down to the swim platform and other sociable areas on the bow and flybridge. The seamless flow between the outdoor and interior spaces is achieved with aft and side deck sliding doors into the main salon lounge and dining area.

The accommodation is all on the lower deck with the master cabin amidships, the VIP forward and two convertible suites between. The crew quarters are generous and located aft of the engine room with convenient direct access to the main deck.

There are two helm stations, one forward of the main salon and the other forward on the flybridge.

Baglietto specialises in the construction of new planing aluminium yachts ranging between 38 and 50 metres in length and steel & aluminium displacement mega-yachts above 40 metres. Baglietto’s CCO Fabio Ermetto commented, – “FRANCESCA II marks another important step in our long history and confirms our world leadership in the construction of highly performant aluminium yachts above 40 metres in length”.

As the ticker tape parade came to a close, luxury yacht FRANCESCA II slipped into the water before undergoing her final testing prior to being handed over to her owner.

“The Apprentice”

On Monday night, all eyes in Cannes will be on the launch of “ The Apprentice ,” the high-profile drama that stars Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump . The filmmakers and stars haven’t done any press on the ground at Cannes ahead of the film’s world premiere, and few have seen it, with plot details shrouded in mystery. 

But one person who has seen it is Dan Snyder, the billionaire former owner of the Washington Commanders who is an investor in “The Apprentice.” And he isn’t happy.

Snyder’s attorneys John Brownlee and Stuart Nash, partners at Florida-based firm Holland & Knight, did not respond to a request for comment. A representative for the filmmakers declined comment.

Snyder isn’t the only investor in “The Apprentice.” Justin Trudeau’s Canadian government also put in money, as did the Irish and Danish governments. Kinematics doesn’t own the copyright on the Ali Abbasi-directed film and cannot kill it. (Abbasi is represented by CAA, which was aware of the legal back and forth over the film. The agency and Abbasi declined comment.)

Heading into Cannes, there was intense interest from potential buyers for the film, which is seeking U.S. distribution ahead of the election in November. International sales outfit Rocket Science is shopping the title at the Marche alongside CAA and WME. Complicating matters, Snyder’s Kinematics has a voice in sales negotiations. 

The filmmakers have intentionally eschewed any press, wanting the movie to speak for itself. After all, they’ve endured a long haul to the finish line. In fact, it took seven years for “The Apprentice” to make it to the big screen. One financier dropped out after the events of Jan. 6, 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol following his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. Another opted not to get involved after Ivana Trump’s death. 

Despite its title, “The Apprentice” doesn’t chronicle Trump’s years as the star of the hit NBC reality show that catapulted him into the Oval Office. The logline provided to press calls the film “a story about the origins of a system … featuring larger-than-life characters and set in a world of power and ambition.” It adds, “The film delves into a profound exploration of the ascent of an American dynasty. It meticulously charts the genesis of a ‘zero-sum’ culture, one that accentuates the dichotomy between winners and losers, the dynamics between the mighty and the vulnerable, and the intricate psychology of persona.” 

It is unclear if Snyder, who is a fixture at the festival where he socializes with other billionaires on his yacht, plans to attend tonight’s premiere alongside the Kinematics team, who will be on hand. He is no stranger to controversy. For years, he ignored calls to change the name of his NFL team, formerly called the Redskins, a term that was offensive to Native Americans. “We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER—you can use caps,” he told USA Today in 2013. After initially refusing to meet with Native American advocates about a name change, he relented in 2020, and the team was eventually rebranded the Washington Commanders. 

One thing is for certain, the post-premiere celebrations for “The Apprentice” will be decidedly awkward.

In pictures: Inside the 42m Baglietto superyacht Rush

Italian shipyard Baglietto has offered a first look inside its 41.7 metre superyacht Rush following her debut at Cannes Yachting Festival last month. 

The aluminium yacht sports a modern interior and exterior design from Francesco Paszkowski with interiors created in collaboration with Margherita Casprini .

Rush features a dark grey hull with a slender silhouette and low hard top that enhances her predatory profile. Aggressive lines are carved out by an extensive use of glazed surfaces across several levels.

As her name suggests, Rush is a high-performance yacht that will be able to reach top speeds of 28 knots with the help of triple MTU engines and a planing hull. According to Baglietto, the yacht is a not to the yard's history, which originally focused on planing yachts. 

On the interior, a generous volume has given the design team plenty of space to play with, with features including a cinema room and large beach club area adjoining the swim platform.

The interior themes of the yacht are contemporary and elegant while making full use of natural light that floods in from full-height windows in the main saloon. The main salon has an open-plan layout, with sofa seating aft of a formal dining space for up to eight, which sits below a television screen.

Forward of the yacht’s main deck is a full-beam owner’s suite with large en suite and spacious walk-in wardrobe. On the lower deck, guests will find four guest cabins comprising two double VIP cabins and two twin cabins. Crew accommodation is also found on the lower deck.

Opportunities to dine and unwind are located across the yacht’s exterior decks, with al fresco dining on the aft and a sunbathing area on the bow.

The yard and the design team have championed flexibility and owner-friendly features throughout Rush .  The yacht’s tender storage is located on the side of the yacht to allow for easy launching and hauling and a draft of just two metres allows for hassle-free cruising in shallow water regions.

The images of Rush come after the yard unveiled images inside the first 41m DOM 133 Attitude in September 2022.

Monaco GP track breakdown: The twists, history and challenge of F1’s crown jewel

The Monaco Grand Prix is the epitome of Formula One.

The principality is known as a playground and a haven, attracting tourists and the rich and famous. It may be the world’s second smallest independent state (at 0.76 square miles, barely half the size of New York’s Central Park), but it’s packed with casinos, designer malls and clubs. Each year, when the grand prix rolls around, the harbor fills with yachts as fans prepare for the thrill on track and champagne moments afterward on the podium.

Monaco’s street track was part of the calendar for F1’s inaugural season in 1950, and it’s kept that place every year since 1955, except for the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

The iconic circuit is narrow, requiring pinpoint accuracy because even being a millimeter off can be a costly error as the drivers navigate around famous buildings, a tight hairpin, and past a slew of yachts. Early races saw the occasional car end up in the harbor; now, fans see costly shunts into the barriers. Overtaking is incredibly difficult (the 2003 race saw zero on-track overtakes), and strategy is critical. Nelson Piquet once said driving in Monaco is “like riding a bicycle around your living room.”

As the 2024 edition of the Monaco Grand Prix kicks off, here’s all you need to know about one of the jewels in F1’s crown.

Something of a squeeze

Though they’ve fluctuated over time, Formula One cars have gotten longer, wider and heavier as the machinery continues to advance, particularly in recent years.

The cars’ width increased from approximately 5.9 feet in 2017 to a maximum of 2000mm (6.56 feet) last season. This is around two meters, not counting the tires, which have also widened.

When it comes to tight tracks like Monaco, where the circuit’s space is dictated by its surroundings, the width can present unique challenges as drivers figure out how to navigate areas like the Turn 6 hairpin.

Points of interest (with a history lesson)

The Monaco GP is part of motorsport’s Triple Crown (along with the Indianapolis 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans) for a reason. It’s 78 laps of pure adrenaline as drivers tackle the 19 turns in the heart of the principality, zipping past the iconic Monte-Carlo Casino, the yacht-filled harbor and more.

Turn 1: Sainte Dévote

The track’s opening turn is a right-hander with a small chapel just beyond the barriers on the left. Expect to see lockups happen here, and cars go straight into the run-off. It’s one of the few places you could see a shuffle in the grid during the opening lap, depending on who gets a better start.

The Sainte Dévote Chapel dates to the 11th century and is dedicated to the patron saint of Monaco.

Turn 3: Massenet

The cars are at the top of the hill as they enter the tight, quick left-hand turn, one of the highest points of the circuit. This portion of the track runs in front of the opera house, named after French opera composer Jules Massenet.

Turn 4: Casino Square

This is one of the most iconic and recognizable corners on the circuit that even non-motorsports fans may know — the 1995 James Bond film “Golden Eye” includes scenes filmed in the Monte-Carlo Casino. The right-hander takes drivers past the front of the establishment.

Another off-track fun fact: Gambling is illegal for Monaco residents. According to the BBC , Princess Caroline felt the revenue shouldn’t come from Monégasques instead from foreigners. Monaco citizens still get a good deal: They don’t pay income taxes.

Turn 6: The Hairpin 

This turn has had a couple of names over the years, including “Loews Hairpin” or the “Fairmont Hairpin,” the latter of which is the name of a famous hotel just outside the corner. Sandwiched between a pair of right-handers, it’s one of the slowest turns on F1’s calendar (think average car speed on a residential road type slow), and if the driver does not hit it correctly, they could turn the track into the normal street with a traffic jam .

Turn 8: Portier

It’s well recommended that drivers take the right-hander rather than heading off into the sea as the 20 cars barrel towards the tunnel. This corner is named after a nearby neighborhood, Le Portier.

There have been a few infamous crashes here, such as in 1988 when Ayrton Senna’s wreck led to his rival (and teammate) Alain Prost winning. Senna went straight to his Monaco apartment afterward and didn’t contact the team until later that evening. In 2017, Jenson Button and Pascal Wehrlein were involved in a nasty-looking collision. Button was competing for McLaren in a one-off appearance and tried to make a move on the inside of Wehrlein’s Sauber. The gap closed, and Wehrlein’s car ended up sideways. Wehrlein later said, per Sky Sports , that his head touched the barrier.

Then there’s the more recent moment that caused a stir during the 2022 season when Sergio Pérez lost the rear of his car during qualifying and crashed backward into the barrier at Portier.

Turns 10 and 11: Nouvelle Chicane

After going through the tunnel, drivers are met with a prime overtaking opportunity in front of the yachts. The chicane was reprofiled in the 1980s, changing the name from Chicane du Port to Nouvelle Chicane (which means new in French).

Turn 12: Tabac

A tobacco shop nestled outside the track gave this lefthander its name. During the 1950 grand prix, a wave crashed into this corner, causing a major pile up that eliminated a chunk of the grid.

Turns 13-16: The Swimming Pool section

This technical complex requires drivers to tackle two chicanes—the left-to-right Louis Chiron (named after a former Monégasque F1 driver) and a right-to-left sequence that takes them out of the swimming pool section. This latter sequence, Piscine, is a slower portion, as history has seen drivers clip part of the wall on Turn 15, which could break the suspension and/or send drivers flying into the barriers outside Turn 16.

Mick Schumacher crashed in this section during the 2022 race, splitting his car into two when he hit the barriers.

This reasonably narrow corner is named after a restaurant of the same name (which itself shares a name with the scorpionfish that’s an ingredient in bouillabaisse). The right-hander’s arguably most famous moment came during 2006 qualifying when Michael Schumacher caused a scandal of sorts. The stewards determined the Ferrari driver purposefully parked his car at Rascasse to prevent competitors from improving their times and sent him to the back of the grid for race day.

Virage Antony Noghes

Finally, we come to the portion named after the Monaco Grand Prix’s founder. It’s the rare point on the track where two cars can go side-by-side — and have before. In 2010, Michael Schumacher passed Fernando Alonso into this portion right as the safety car was leaving the track (and was subsequently dealt a penalty).

Drivers defend Monaco

Though it may sound dramatic, getting through Monaco is a matter of survival. In a tweet last year, Mika Häkkinen, who won the F1 world championship in 1998 and 1999 and the Monaco Grand Prix in 1998, acknowledged fans may feel the race is “too predictable” because of the overtaking difficulty. But he argued it’s still a noteworthy grand prix: “For me, it’s the challenge between the driver and the circuit, still unique in #F1.”

The current F1 drivers agree. “You need to really nail all of qualifying to get a lap together there, get the tires to work as well when it matters, it’s always very tricky,” Max Verstappen said. “Monaco is very special, I would say, in that sense.”

Lando Norris agreed. “It’s a track where you want a good car, but you also just need to commit to everything,” he said. “It’s such a fast circuit. It’s not like you kind of just turn the wheel slowly. You have to commit. You have to judge how close you’re going to get to the apexes and that kind of thing. So there’s a big element of risk. And when that comes into play, it kind of spreads out things a little bit, too.”

Charles Leclerc — a Monaco native who remembers watching Ferrari’s red car zipping past from his friend’s balcony growing up — detailed a particular approach to his home race. “Monaco is so specific that we need to start a little bit from a blank page. And yeah, free practice is super, super important to build the pace little by little. But I’m confident we’ll be strong. And as I’ve said many times, obviously, it’s the same roads that I took by bus to go to school when I was younger. Now it’s in a Formula One car. So that makes it extra special for me. So I’m really looking forward to it. To be in Monaco, a very special track I think for every driver because it’s a very challenging track and extra special for me, as it’s my home race.”

Monaco balances risk versus reward — just how far do you push?

“Most often, it’s just sheer luck,” Lewis Hamilton said last year. “Throw it into the corner and come out with your eyes open. And hopefully you’ve made it round.”
