11 Spooky Supernatural And Korean Ghost Dramas 2023

In this article, you can find a list of the best Korean ghost dramas on Netflix, Viu, Viki, and other streaming platforms.

I love all things supernatural! Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires. But do you know what supernatural creatures are underrated? Ghosts!

Seriously! Remember movies like The Ring that managed to be so scary. Or Beetlejuice and Casper which were sweet heartwarming stories?

Ghosts are very versatile. And Korean dramas (when terrifying you with zombies and demons from hell) make such wonderful ghost stories.

What I liked best about these Korean ghost dramas is that they aren’t necessarily hide-your-face-with-your-hands scary.

The plot of these K-dramas are so layered and the genres range from horror to romance and even comedy, despite being about ghosts.

So what are the best Korean ghost dramas? Here is a list I’ve made of all my f ones and where you can watch them.

Table of Contents

Top Korean Ghost Drama 2023

Ghost detective .

  • Number Of Episodes : 32
  • Cast : Choi Daniel, Park Eun-Bin, Lee Ji-ah
  • Where To Watch : Viki, Dramacool

Would you like to live in a world where ghosts, demons, etc. are all real? This type of world is exactly where the show Ghost Detective is based.

Just like there’s police to help catch criminals who are human, this world has cops for ghosts too!

And one person is the former military man Lee Da Il who works as a private investigator hunting ghosts alongside his assistant Jung Yeo-wool.

If you love crime-based shows with a spooky twist, you’ll love this show. It has elements that remind you of shows like Lucifer and Supernatural.

Ghost Detective is a show with a lot of action and suspense. It has elements that remind you of the supernatural genre but it also has comedy, romance, and drama all in one.

The characters are great; they have good chemistry between each other which makes watching their journey to find out what’s going on even more fun!

I am not a big fan of shows that have a lot of comedy and are centered around the main characters’ lives, but this show was different. It is based on an interesting concept and has elements that remind you of Sherlock (which I like).

The most memorable thing about this series is definitely its comical twist to the crime genre. The drama had me laughing out loud at times, which made it all the more enjoyable for me as well. In addition to being fun to watch, Ghost Detective also has good chemistry between its two lead actors who play off each other really well!

The Master’s Sun

  • Number Of Episodes :  17
  • Cast : So Ji-sub, Gong Hyo-jin
  • Where To Watch : Netflix, Viki

This 2013 K-drama combines a classic ghost story with romance, fantasy and comedy elements.

It follows Gong-shil, a young woman who is blessed (or rather cursed) with the ability to see ghosts following a life-threatening accident.

These ghosts hound her continually seeking her help to fulfil their last wishes. However, all this ghostly interference takes a toll on Gong-shil’s daily life and she becomes a recluse.

Until one day, she meets self-centred CEO Joo Joong-won who makes her ghosts disappear… quite literally!

He keeps her by his side hoping to use her supernatural ability for his gain. She agrees as Joong-won’s presence keeps the ghosts away.

But this marriage of convenience takes a different turn when they actually begin to fall in love with each other. No surprises there!

I really like the Master’s Sun as the show combines many genres. It is an exhilarating adventure, it has it’s spooky moments, and it also

I was in the mood for a good ghost story, and this drama delivers. It’s quite different from other dramas I’ve watched because it has many elements that you don’t normally see in an Asian TV drama. Firstly, it is not all about ghosts or spirits; there are plenty of human characters as well!

Secondly, Gong-shil is not just some “damsel in distress” who falls into trouble and needs to be saved by her handsome man character; she plays a big part in helping solve the mystery at hand.

Thirdly, while yes there are ghosts involved (as mentioned above), they’re actually very realistic.

The acting is phenomenal in this drama, particularly Park Hae-il who plays Gong-shil’s boyfriend Yoo Chang-woong (not Jaejoong).

He portrays his character so well that you really feel like he could be your best friend. The slow burn romance between them makes you want to see how things turn out for their relationship which keeps you glued to the screen every week!

Oh My Ghost

  • Number Of Episodes : 16
  • Cast :   Park Bo-young, Jo Jung-suk, Lim Ju-hwan, Kim Seul-gi

Now not all ghost stories need to be scary! If you’re looking for the best ghost comedy Korean drama, then Oh My Ghost is the one.

The show revolves around a shy and timid chef called Na Bong-sun who gets possessed by a… ahem…rather horny virgin ghost called Shin Soon-ae, who is determined to do complete this one “unfinished business”.

Things get worse for Na Bong-sun when the ghost sets her eyes on Bong-sun’s arrogant boss, the star chef Kang Sun-woo.

I love this drama. It is one of the best Korean dramas I have ever watched and it has a great story that will make you laugh, cry or even scream!

The characters are so well developed and they are easy to relate with especially Bong-sun who’s just like us, he doesn’t know how to deal with ghosts but still tries his best to save people no matter what happens. I am obsessed by Shin Soon-ae because she’s very interesting character.

She is trying her hardest to help Na Bong-sun solve the problem of becoming human again while being stuck as a ghost in her body.

Oh My Ghost is a hilarious and fun show. The characters are all very lovable, the romance between the two main characters is adorable and there’s even an interesting new concept for romance in this one!

If you want a ghostly tale that will have you clutching your stomach in laughter rather than your face with fear, you can watch Oh My Ghost. It’s available on Netflix and Viki.

  • Number Of Episodes : 8
  • Cast : Song Chae-Yoon, Han Su-ah, Shim So-Young, Yeong-gi Jeong
  • Where To Watch : Netflix

Not to be confused with a Korean horror movie anthology of the same name, Goedam is a K-drama series based on urban legends.

Each episode of this anthology series is about a different spooky folk tale. So you can find more than ghost stories there.

The 1st, 2nd, and 8th stories are pure ghostly spook, you’ve come here for.

But the rest of the show is also quite interesting with tales about shamans, a folk monster called the Smiling Woman, and interdimensional beings.

49 Days

  • Number Of Episodes :  20
  • Cast : Lee Yo-won, Nam Gyu-ri, Jo Hyun-jae, Bae Soo-bin
  • Where To Watch : Amazon Prime, Viu

The plot of this Korean ghost drama is a very interesting one. Shin Ji Hyun, a cheerful girl seemingly has everything going for her in her life.

She has loving parents, a handsome boyfriend who she’s about to marry, a great job. But all of that changes when she gets into an accident and ends up in a coma.

Ji Hyun refuses to give up on her life and makes a deal with the grim reaper. If she can find three people (who don’t know her) to cry genuine tears for her, he’ll let her live. And she has 49 days to accomplish her task.

To make this work, Ji Hyun’s ghost borrows the body of Yi Kyung, who works at a grocery store.

Will Ji-Hyun make it to the land of the living? Well, you have to see the K-drama in order to find out! It’s available on Viu and Amazon Prime.

Bring It On, Ghost

  • Number Of Episodes : 16
  • Cast : Ok Taecyeon, Kim So-hyun, Kwon Yul
  • Where To Watch : Viki

Here’s another ghostly, romantic comedy for you! I love the chemistry between the main characters in this show.

There’s Park Bong-pa, a ghost-hunter who hates this ability and works as an exorcist in order to make money.

And on the other side there’s high school student Kim Hyun-ji who’s died prematurely and now wanders the earth as a restless spirit.

Kim Hyun-ji seeks Bong-pa’s help to find out why she’s still stuck on earth and eventually becomes his partner in ghostbusting.

And like in most K-drama’s this unusual couple falls in love!

But both are unaware of the dark spirit that’s haunting them and is the cause of both their troubles.

You can find this K-drama on Rakuten Viki.

Arang And The Magistrate

  • Number Of Episodes : 20
  • Cast :  Lee Joon-gi, Shin Min-ah, Yeon Woo-jin
  • Where To Watch : Amazon Prime, Viki

I do love a good historical show, especially the Joseon Korean dramas ! And I further was enraptured with the supernatural elements in this one.

The story follows a nobleman Kim Eun-oh who comes to a village seeking his mother.

But instead, he finds the amnesiac ghost Arang who is desperately trying to find out how she died.

Eun-oh, now the magistrate reluctantly begins to help her as he finds clues linking Arang to his mother.

Hotel Del Luna

  • Cast : Lee Ji-Eun (IU), Yeo Jin-goo
  • Where To Watch : Netflix, Viki, Viu

Probably one of the most popular Korean ghost drama on Netflix, Hotel Del Luna stars Kpop idol IU (who’s popular as Korea’s “little sister”).

The K-drama revolves around the titular Hotel which is reserved only for souls or ghosts that have unfinished business in this world and rarely appears to humans.

And IU plays the moody owner of the hotel Jang Man-wol who finds herself bound to the place as penance for a sin she committed a thousand years ago.

Things get interesting when Jang Man-wol makes a deal with a human and promises him 20 years of riches in exchange for 20 years of his son’s life.

So when the son Gu Chan-sung finally comes back to South Korea after his stint abroad he faces Jang Man-wol and the prospect of working at Hotel Del Luna instead of the cushy, normal hotel job he was expecting!

  Sell Your Haunted House

  • Cast :   Jang Na-ra, Jung Yong-hwa, Kang Hong-seok, Ahn Gil-kang
  • Where To Watch : Viki, Viu

What happens you put a bonafide exorcist with the ability to see and banish ghosts with a con artist who simply pretends to do this?

Well, you can watch Sell Your Haunted House on Viki or Viu to find out. I’m not giving you any spoilers!

Hong Ji-ah is a real estate agent who sells haunted houses after getting rid of any supernatural creatures living in there.

But she can’t seem to understand the circumstances in which her mother died.

So she teams up with Oh In-beom, a conman whose uncle passed away in a similarly mysterious way to find out the secret behind the two deaths.

  • Number Of Episodes : 18
  • Cast : Song Seung-heon, Go Ara, Lee El, Kim Dong-jun
  • Where To Watch : Netflix, Viu

There have been several stories involving the Grim Reaper in Korean dramas. This is one of my favourite ones after Guardian.

The show follows Grim Reaper #444 who is now possessing the body of a former detective Han Moo-gang.

While doing his duties of ferrying the dead to the afterlife, the Grim Reaper discovers clues that can potentially solve a cold case from years ago.

And in the process, he also manages to fall in love with Moo-gang’s childhood friend Kang Ha-ram who coincidentally can see the death following people.

See You in My 19th Life

“See You in My 19th Life” is a captivating and innovative Korean drama that takes the concept of time travel to a whole new level, immersing viewers in a beautifully woven narrative of romance, destiny, and self-discovery. From its intriguing premise to its heartfelt performances, this drama keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, eager to uncover the mysteries that lie within the space-time continuum.

The plot centers around Ji Soo, portrayed by a talented actress, a young woman who finds herself inexplicably transported back to different points in her past lives, each time as her 19-year-old self. As she navigates through various eras, she must untangle the threads of fate that tie her to a mysterious young man named Min Jae, played brilliantly by a charismatic actor. Together, they embark on a journey to understand their connections across lifetimes and the impact of their choices on each other’s destinies.

What sets “See You in My 19th Life” apart from conventional time-travel dramas is its seamless blending of historical settings with modern storytelling. The drama effortlessly shifts between various time periods, and the attention to detail in recreating each era is commendable. The costume design, set pieces, and cinematography all contribute to the immersive experience, transporting viewers back in time with every leap.

The chemistry between the lead actors is undeniable, breathing life into their characters and making their love story all the more compelling. As their relationship evolves through time and space, their emotional journey tugs at the heartstrings, leaving viewers emotionally invested in their fate. Their performances are nuanced and heartfelt, making it easy for the audience to relate to their struggles, joys, and heartaches.

The writing of “See You in My 19th Life” is a standout feature of the drama. The intricate plot unfolds gradually, keeping the viewers engaged while revealing surprises and twists at just the right moments. The exploration of themes such as fate, reincarnation, and the power of love adds depth to the narrative, prompting thought-provoking reflections on life’s unpredictability and the choices we make.

Furthermore, the drama’s supporting cast plays a significant role in enhancing the overall experience. Each character’s unique personality and backstory contribute to the overarching plot, making the ensemble feel well-rounded and essential to the story’s progression.

If there’s one minor drawback to “See You in My 19th Life,” it is that some viewers might find the time-travel complexities a bit challenging to follow initially. However, as the pieces of the puzzle come together, the intricacies of the plot become clearer, rewarding those who stay invested.

In conclusion, “See You in My 19th Life” is a standout Korean drama that skillfully weaves romance, time travel, and profound themes into a mesmerizing narrative. With its remarkable performances, stunning visuals, and thought-provoking storytelling, it’s a drama that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on its viewers.

Whether you’re a fan of romance, fantasy, or simply enjoy a well-crafted storyline, this drama is a must-watch for its unique take on love transcending time and the power of destiny.

10+ Supernatural K-Dramas You Need To Binge Watch

10+ Supernatural K-Dramas You Need To Binge Watch

When it comes to visual entertainment, we all know that K-dramas are the best — and who would dare to disagree on that? Beautiful romances, adorable heart-pounding moments, laugh-out-loud comedy, and an industry full of amazingly talented actors…add in the supernatural element, and you have a K-drama worth selling your soul for. Fans of the paranormal, superhuman, and magical, here are the dramas you should be watching!

i see ghost korean drama

The obvious pick is “ Goblin .” It’s a new show that recently finished airing, and it received top ratings and applause from many viewers. If you like a beautifully poetic story and amazing visual effects, this K-drama is for you. It also features a goblin, a grim reaper, a chaebol, a girl who sees ghosts, a reincarnated queen, and two gods, so if you decide to watch it, you’ll be in for a fantastical show that will make you fall hard for the characters and cry-laugh at the many feel-good moments. The bromance alone makes the show a 10 out of 10. Bonus: It stars the handsome Gong Yoo , who just recently scored another big hit in the amazing zombie thriller “Train to Busan.”

Watch

The Legend of the Blue Sea

i see ghost korean drama

For all you mermaid lovers: we finally have a K-drama for that! “ The Legend of the Blue Sea ” is another K-drama high up on the chart, with a tone slightly similar to “Goblin” in its fairytale elements, except this show focuses mainly on a love that endures throughout multiple timelines and even between land and sea. If you’re a sucker for romance, then this drama is for you, as there are many adorable moments between the two main characters, played by Lee Min Ho and Jun Ji Hyun . For fans of comedy, the first few episodes also have a lot of slapstick humor, though it tones down to focus on the plot later.

Watch

In “ W ,” a handsome and intelligent webtoon character falls in love with the writer’s daughter. Hijinks ensue as the couple tries to outrun a webtoon villain who exists to destroy our hero and bridge the gap between both worlds. Warning: there are some sad and/or stressful moments.

Master’s Sun

i see ghost korean drama

Horror rom-com is a unique type of genre that, unfortunately, has not shown up in too many dramas yet. However, I recommend trying it out, as these shows mix fright with laughter in a way that’s fun and perfect for a Halloween night, a cool summer thriller…or any night of the year, really. As a scaredy-cat myself, the elements of horror aren’t so strong that you won’t be able to sleep at night — just grab a friend before you watch.

The top drama in this category is “ Master’s Sun ,” by the Hong Sisters. The slapstick humor is strong in this one, but it’s a hilarious show about a girl driven crazy by her fears of the ghosts she sees and the heartwarming chaebol who slowly evolves into someone worthy of protecting her. Throughout the show, the characters come together to help the ghosts that appear to them with paranormal cases, all the while attempting to unravel a very strange mystery.

Bring It On, Ghost

i see ghost korean drama

“ Bring It On, Ghost ” is kind of a teenage version of “Master’s Sun”: it has a sweet summer romance played out by Kim So Hyun and Taecyeon (Hint: Listen to My Heartbeat) and a ghost crime-fighting unit that’s often better at comedy. However, the show carries itself strong up until the last episode, which leaves viewers with a slightly unsatisfying and weak ending.

Oh My Ghostess

i see ghost korean drama

“ Oh My Ghostess ” bears slight similarities to the above K-dramas; it’s more centered around one ghost — specifically, a very handsy ghost ( Kim Seul Gi ) that feels slighted over the fact she’s a virgin ghost. Add in a shy girl ( Park Bo Young ) who hopes for the attention of a handsome chef ( Jo Jung Suk ) and body possession, and you end up with a zany supernatural drama that finds its niche in slightly adult humor and a few well-meaning lessons of life. As usual, this rom-com also has an element of mystery to it.

Arang and the Magistrate

i see ghost korean drama

“ Arang and the Magistrate ” is an older K-drama that also centers around a ghost…in the Joseon era. Arang ( Shin Min Ah ), our main character, is a sweet, tough spirit who manages to run into our hero, a handsome magistrate ( Lee Joon Gi ) who can see the dead. Throughout the show, our magistrate must use his detective skills to defeat some seriously creepy, supernatural killers. “Arang and the Magistrate” also opens an interesting window into classic Korean ghost beliefs, with the addition of an amusing portrayal of the gods of heaven and hell.

i see ghost korean drama

If you run out of dramas to watch, a wonderful horror rom-com movie is “ Spellbound ,” in which a woman haunted by a ghost meets a cowardly magician willing to endure his fear of the supernatural in order to protect her.

Gu Family Book

i see ghost korean drama

“ Gu Family Book ” is an older drama starring a half-human, half-gumiho (a Korean creature of folklore) born out of about two entire episodes of tragedy, so if you have difficulty handling rough scenes, I’d advise against this show. However, there’s something so good about the main character, played by Lee Seung Gi , that makes you fall in love with him immediately. It’s the fantasy elements of this show that make it so interesting (plus the romance). However, the storyline does waver in places and the ending is semi-sad, so if you’re prone to weeping, you might want to try one of the other K-dramas on this list.

My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho

i see ghost korean drama

“ My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho ” is a slapstick comedy rom-com that deals with similar elements of Korean lore, also starring Lee Seung Gi, so if you appreciate the Hong Sisters’ humor, then K-drama fans may find this a fun watch.

My Love From the Star

i see ghost korean drama

“ My Love From the Star ” is another older, but top-ratings drama starring photogenic actors Kim Soo Hyun and Jun Ji Hyun. If you can imagine the American Superman as a handsome Korean drama man, then you understand why “My Love From the Star” is a must-watch. It’s a sweet, romantic show about a hallyu star that falls in love with an alien. It involves cool superpowers, many funny moments, and a psychopathic murderer worthy of going up against our beloved alien.

If vampires are your thing, then never fear; the K-drama world has produced a number of shows to satisfy your tastes:

“ Blood ” is an interesting vampire show; however, fans found themselves unsatisfied with the openly ended and depressing finale. Reasons to watch: it’s a fusion of a vampire show and a medical drama, and main actors Ahn Jae Hyun and Ku Hye Sun married in real life last May!

Orange Marmalade

i see ghost korean drama

“ Orange Marmalade ” is a cute, high school romance adapted from a webtoon.

Scholar Who Walks the Night

i see ghost korean drama

“ Scholar Who Walks the Night ” takes vampires back to the Joseon era, complete with a cross-dressing girl who attempts to hide herself in the world of male scholars.

Vampire Prosecutor

i see ghost korean drama

“ Vampire Prosecutor “: For those who like less romance and more crime-fighting every once in a while, this show is a compelling and hugely popular drama centered around a vampire himself. There are two seasons, plus a short spinoff show.

Other Shows!

Other supernatural shows to watch are:

“ I Hear Your Voice “: Following a noona romance between a lawyer and a boy who can read her mind, This drama is a must-watch if you’re a fan of Lee Jong Suk, who carries the show with his adorable cuteness.

“ Queen In Hyun’s Man “: A sweet romance involving time travel.

“Touching You”: A short drama made up of web-isodes, “Touching You” is an interesting show to watch if you don’t have a lot of time. It stars Taecyeon, whose character can see people’s fates when he touches them. My only complaint is the female lead, who seems a bit weak and flat, but for about 15 minutes per episode, it’s worth a watch.

If life is a bore and you need an adrenaline rush to perk yourself up, these 11 horror Korean dramas might turn your crank. They may not be conventionally terrifying with crescendo sound effects, but they’re certainly uncanny enough to keep you up at night.

Packed with gory scenes and multiple jumpscares, the series follows a group of high school students who navigate through a zombie apocalypse that engulfs the entire country.

All Of Us Are Dead doesn’t elicit fear from the viewers by making use of ghostly figures. Rather, it’s the realistic zombie performances, as well as the life-and-death situations that the characters find themselves in, that accentuate the horror element.

Following the invasion of unnamed supernatural beings simply referred to as the “executors of hell”, society no longer functions in an orderly fashion.

These executors of hell sentence people to eternal damnation by taking their lives away in the most brutal way possible.

Amidst the chaos, a cult known as the “New Truth Society” begins to gain the trust of the public.

However, not every member of the society is a follower of the cult. A minority is sceptical about this organisation, and they go out of their way to investigate the correlation between the New Truth Society and the executors of hell.

Is the New Truth Society wearing a mask that hides ill intentions, or does it actually lead people to the truth?

Hellbound is an eerie and disturbing series that will make you feel uncomfortable and strangely terrified because of how damnation and death are realistically portrayed in the drama.

It was no surprise when the streamer announced a season 2 renewal , with creator Jan Ho-gi promising that the next installment would "surpass its predecessor in every aspect."

'The Devil's Plan' season 2

For viewers who are more interested in games of wit and mental prowess rather than physical strength, The Devil's Plan has also been renewed for an upcoming second season. The exciting first season brought together contestants from various fields (including doctors, actors, professional poker players, and an idol) to solve sophisticated mental games for the chance at a 250 million won (approximately $194,000 USD) prize.

'The Influencer'

'The 8 Show'

The description for this upcoming thriller drama (based on the webtoon Money Game by Bae Jin-soo) gives big Squid Game and Alice in Borderland vibes: "8 people in need of money are invited to appear on reality variety show Money Game. The 8 people are to stay at the studio that consists of nothing but concrete walls. If they are able to hang in there for 100 days, they can divide the winning prize of 44.8 billion won equally. But, everything they spend for, including necessities like food, water, electricity, costs 1,000 times more than normal prices and are deducted from the winning prize."

'The Whirlwind'

This gripping political drama will depict a harsh feud within South Korea's executive leadership. He soon finds himself in conflict with Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Finance Jeong Soo-jin ( Queenmaker 's Kim Hee-ae), who opposes his efforts.

'Two Women'

This highly-anticipated drama (also known as Eun Jung and Sang Yeon ) will follow an enduring, love-hate friendship between two women who cross paths at various phases of life. Ryu Eun-jung ( Goblin 's Kim Go-eun) and Cheon Sang-yeon ( Reborn Rich 's Park Ji-hyun) form a close bond in their school days, becoming each other's best friend and rival. The Glory 's Kim Gun-woo will also star as Kim Sang-hak, a charming older college student who plays a crucial part in the women's changing relationship.

'Weak Hero Class 2'

Weak Hero Class 1 was one of the best underrated dramas of 2022, following high school student Yeon Si-eun (former Wanna One member Park Ji-hoon) as he struggled against brutal school violence. Now, Netflix is set to distribute the show's second season, where Si-eun will challenge a new set of bullies after he's transferred to a new school. The new installment will also star Crash Landing on You 's Yoo Soo-bin, Twinkling Watermelon 's Ryeoun, and Twenty-Five Twenty-One 's Choi Min-young.

'Zombieverse' season 2

Season 1 of this unscripted series put actors, comedians, and TV personalities (including Dex from Single's Inferno ) in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, testing their survival skills as they were put through different quests. Zombieverse joins the other Korean variety shows that are returning for season 2, with the announcement promising, "upgraded quests, enhanced zombies, a new cast, and an expanded universe.”

'All of Us Are Dead' season 2

This zombie drama was  renewed  in June 2022, following a thrilling first season that followed the students of Hyosan High School as they fought their way out of their town. Director Lee Jae-kyoo has previously teased that Nam-ra (Cho Yi-hyn) and the evolved zombies could be a big part of the new season, along with the possible return of Cheong-san (Yoon Chan-young). (If you need a refresher, here's  how Season 1 ended .)

As they approach their third year of marriage, the couple raised in two different worlds will face an unforeseen crisis and miraculously rekindle their love again.

'Squid Game' season 2

Though word is still out on whether  Squid Game 2  will arrive in 2024 or 2025, we can't leave out the highly anticipated continuation of Netflix's most popular series ever. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk as stayed mostly mum on his plans for the forthcoming season, but we do know that former winner Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) will be back. Crossing our fingers for the return of cop Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun) as well!
