After closing last June for renovations, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on Virgin Gorda reopened last week with new and improved facilities.

The premises also have a new waterside restaurant, “Bar Aqua,” which will specialise in light food and drinks ranging from smoothies to cocktails, according to the organisation.

“We are very excited by this next stage in the club’s development in Virgin Gorda and are determined to ensure that both the Azzurra restaurant at the YCCS Clubhouse and Bar Aqua at the YCCS marina become must-visit destinations in the Caribbean,” YCCS Secretary General Jan Pachner said of the reopening.

When the yacht club announced last May that it would be closing for renovations, YCCS Operations Manager Dario Cruciani said that about 25 workers would be affected by the closure. Mr. Cruciani added at the time that the YCCS would be able to hire 40 workers upon reopening, and the club’s announcement states that it now has 46 employees.

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda

Anchorage on the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Marina is possible on the South shore of the Virgin Gorda Island. There is a T-shaped quay which is capable of accommodating various luxurious charter yachts of up to 100m length and 9m drought. The two sides of the large pontoon allow mooring of up to 30 charter yachts. The Yacht Club in the British Virgin Islands is a subsidiary of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda located in Cervo Porto, Italy.

General Information

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was established in 1967. It is situated in Cervo Porto of northern Sardinia. The purpose of this club to build a non-profit sporting association for sailing enthusiasts. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) Clubhouse was built in the 1970s. YCCS Clubhouse is located in Virgin Gorda and provides a place for boat accommodation, various dock services and refreshments. It also provides concierge who shall take care of your bookings etc. There is an infinity pool which provides a pleasant view of the North Sound . The restaurant serves Italian and Caribbean cuisines and provisioning for visiting charter yachts is available.

This Restaurant offers a fine dining experience for the visitors. It serves local Caribbean and Italian cuisines, as well as international cuisines, are offered. The restaurant provides an exceptional view of the British Virgin Island. Their menus offer fresh fish dishes, salads and steaks.

The Bar Aqua is a waterside restaurant. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their menu varies from a selection of pizzas, fresh salad and handmade burgers which made of Bison from the grasslands of US.

Places of Interest

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda offers a place of relaxation with its pool, water games and refreshments. The Virgin Gorda island provides a variety of activities. There are a few diving sites which are nearby the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Also North Sound bay provides a hub for watersports, such as kayaking, snorkeling and kite surfing, with a range of bars and restaurants. The Baths, one of the most popular attractions among BVI yacht charter tourists , can be visited from YCCS.

Renovations to Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) BVI, in Virgin Gorda, will offer both pampering as well as practical services to visiting yachtsmen when completed this winter. On the creature comfort front, new and expanded services will include extensive provisioning – from fine wines and liquors to international delicacies – and concierge services: excursions, transfers, day-trips, leisure activities and more. YCCS will also provide a range of on-board services that range, for example, from catering to spa treatments, yoga and personal training. In the must-have arena, YCCS Marina will add a pump-out service as part of its ongoing commitment to protecting the marine environment, one of the first facilities of its kind in the BVI.

“YCCS Marina activities will be operational this winter season, however the Clubhouse will remain closed until January 2017,” says Jill Campbell, press and marketing officer for YCCS. “When we reopen, we will have a new crew bar and restaurant. This will be a more casual space compared to the existing dining facilities which offer luxury service. A delicatessen and boutique will also be available. Two guest suites will be completed during 2017.”

Regattas planned for YCCS BVI in 2017 include the Rolex Swan Cup Caribbean (March 1 to 5), 50th YCCS Anniversary Regatta BVI – Round the Island Race (March 7), and Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous (March 10 to 13). YCCS BVI will also host the Atlantic Anniversary Regatta, which departs from Lanzarote, the easternmost of the Canary Islands on 25 November 2017, en route to Virgin Gorda, a 2800-mile voyage.

YCCS BVI is located in North Sound, Virgin Gorda. The 38-slip marina accommodates yachts up to 250ft in length with a maximum 27ft draft. marina.yccs.it

Superyacht construction has grown significantly and steadily over the past 12 years, and the number of these superb vessels cruising the world’s oceans has never been greater. YCCS is renowned for organizing international sailing events. Its vision of creating a dynamic event venue in the new Virgin Gorda location begins with the Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous on March 16-20, 2011. This will be followed by the Transatlantic Superyacht Regatta that begins in Tenerife in late November 2011 and will finish in the BVI’s during first two weeks of December 2011.

There will be an on-site customs service enabling yachts to enter the British Virgin Islands at the YCCS marina.

Trail Snapshot: Virgin Gorda

At eight square miles and a population of around 4,500, VG is the largest of the islands after Tortola and Anegada. The southern section, known as Spanish Town, is the busiest and contains the main ferry terminal, airport and most of the resident population. The central section has few roads, is topographically challenging, environmentally sensitive and boasts one of BVIs major National Parks. The north eastern section comprises an arthritic finger of hills, deserted beaches and the odd exclusive yacht club and private island. VG is mesmerising and is a wonderful host to the hiker, but only on its own terms!

Of the three described in Trails & Tales Hiking Guide, Hike V3 is summarised here and the first challenge is to get to the start at Bitter End Yacht Club half way along that ‘arthritic finger’. Never fear, the North Sound Express high-speed ferry from Beef Island to BEYC is the answer and the scenic 30 min trip itself is worth it.

In fact the hike (3.5mi long and will take about 3.5 hrs) incorporates elements of two established circuits: Guy’s Trail and Alvin’s Heights and it is to those who conceived the routes and produced the original hand drawn sketch maps and accompanying notes that acknowledgement must be given.

Follow the path inland past the salt pond and a junction demands a decision: right, offers a direct route back to Bitter End or left (recommended), through the Biras Creek resort along a rocky beach and then on to the steep path signed to Alvin’s Heights. Negotiate your way through the seagrape and wild sage bushes and take a short detour left to Lovers Leap from where the views are spectacular. Return to the gravel path, follow it left carefully and in 10mins you’ll top out at a significant 450ft. Look out for the soaring killi-killi (American kestrel) and take in the 270 degree views of Bitter End in the distance directly north and Biras Creek and Oil Nut Bay north east which speak for themselves…wow!  From your eyrie follow the zig-zag path steeply down admiring the long distance views and appreciate the efforts of Alvin (its creator). Head for Biras Creek below, spot the dock and look left for the smarty pants YCCS (Yacht Club Costa Smeralda) but your route is straight ahead, on the Mangrove Trail, to the delights of Bitter End where a swift refreshment in The Crawl pub may be in order.

The BVIs is made up of more than 25 beautiful islands, with many secret experiences to discover amongst its hidden coves. A good navigator is essential for racing; the deep draught of some of the competing yachts means danger is never far away.

A range of yachts enter the regatta

Cruising superyachts share the same racecourse with brand new performance orientated racing yachts at the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous. Variations in age, type, size and shape make creating a fair handicapping system a challenging task.

New rules introduced for 2015

For 2015 the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous organisers changed the rules, opting to use the new ORC Superyacht rule to create a fairer and more competitive event. This system has also been adopted by the Bucket Regattas and the Superyacht Cup Palma.

Superb conditions for final day

A building breeze from the east brought superb conditions for large boat racing and after a thrilling final race  _ P2 , a _38m Perini Navi , snuck in for victory to take Class A. She also won the 2015 Loro Piana Prize: the Boat International Media Trophy.

Endeavour and Ranger , well known J Class yachts, have both taken part in the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous. Past winners include 45m Salperton IV , 30.5m Wally Indio and 42.1 metre J Class Hanuman .

Founder of Porto Cervo’s Yacht Club Costa Smeralda honoured at World Superyacht Awards 2019

His Highness the Aga Khan saw the potential of Sardinia ’s Costa Smeralda as a yachting hub in the 1950’s, and the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club was established as a result of his vision.

Businessman, spiritual leader and philanthropist His Highness the Aga Khan was presented with the Legacy Award at the World Superyacht Awards 2019 in London on May 18.

He was honoured for his discovery and development of the Costa Smeralda region, near Porto Cervo , on the north east portion of Sardinia in the sixties. 

By introducing the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, he is largely responsible for turning this part of Sardinia into the superyacht magnet it is today. 

He wanted the area to become an exclusive destination for elite travellers, while still maintaining its natural beauty and heritage.

Together with Andrè Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and Luigi Vietti, the Aga Khan established the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on 1967 as a sporting centre for fellow sailing enthusiasts looking for a slice of Italian paradise.

Since its inception, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has organised a number of international regattas which it went on to host in later years, making the Aga Khan a worthy winner of this prestigious accolade.

The Aga Khan is also noted for his role in the establishment of the Costa Smeralda Consortium in 1962.

This year, the hotly-anticipated Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2019 will be back at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on June 3, marking an important date in the calendar for the Mediterranean yacht charter season.

Over five days, thrilling races will take place around La Maddalena archipelago, which sits just a few kilometres from Sardinia. This scattering of islands creates around 50 fast-paced racing circuits, each of which are complemented by excellent sailing conditions and stunning scenery.

Visiting the Emerald Coast

Those on a superyacht vacation in Italy shouldn’t miss the chance to explore Sardinia, and discover everything this idyllic island has to offer.

On the north eastern tip, Porto Cervo has earned a reputation for its sailing, superyachts and luxury living. It regularly pulls in luxury charter yachts with its countless designer fashion houses, upscale restaurants and chic beach clubs.

Further along the coast lies the Costa Smeralda. With a name which translates to ‘Emerald Coast’, this stretch of shoreline is lapped by the Tyrrhenian sea and promises clear, turquoise water, ivory, sun-baked beaches and plenty of calm, secluded anchorages for charter yachts looking for some peace and quiet.

It’s all too easy to understand why his Highness the Aga Khan fell in love with this Sardinian stretch of coastline all those years ago, and why his legacy will live on as Costa Smeralda continues to delight those exploring on a  West Mediterranean private yacht charter .

It all started with the art of sailmaking and making marine canvas products built to withstand the harsh Caribbean environment of relentless sun and salt air, with the occasional hurricane thrown in for good measure. Our goal was always to build products that would look good and maintain their structural integrity for as long as possible.

AWNINGS/SHADE SAILS

We have more than 30 years experience building awnings and shade sails; we have worked on  very small projects as well as what may be the largest unsupported membrane in the world.    Whether large or small, each project is different and each needs to be planned carefully so that it will be functional, practical and aesthetically pleasing for many years to come.

An upholstery project is often an opportunity to look at better ways to attach cushions to the base or change the configuration to make the area more user friendly. 

It takes time in planning, knowledge of materials and working closely with the customers to understand their needs to make an upholstery project more than just recovering cushions.  

Between 27 April and 22 May we made and sold nearly 2000 face masks. Our goal was to provide masks as a community service and thus we priced our product to be affordable for most people.

For Phase II we offer three products which can be custom made, with ear straps adjusted to fit and a limited choice of colours. If you don’t like any of the 100% cotton fabric we have in stock, you can provide 100% cotton fabric of your choice.

We are also offering surgical caps made from 100% cotton that we have in stock or can be made from 100% cotton fabric that you provide.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's first base was the Maison Du Port, the first building erected in Porto Cervo on what is nowadays called the "Old Port". In 1977 the Club moved to new premises overlooking the New Marina: a modern and functional structure ideal for hosting numerous Members and the ever-growing regatta calendar. At the start of the new millennium (from 2001 to 2003) the area that now hosts the YCCS was completely renovated in a project supervised by New York architect Peter Marino and is now considered one of the most beautifully functional structures of its kind in existence. The structure covers more than 6,000 square metres and includes a panoramic pool terrace, internal and external dining, Members' lounge, bar and Wellness Center. YCCS also offers 24 suites, including a Presidential Suite inaugurated in 2016. RESTAURANT OPENING TIMES
