A 95-metre superyacht priced at $200 million was spotted cruising through False Creek before docking in North Vancouver.

Attessa V Yacht was built in 2010 by Blohm and Voss, a German shipbuilding and engineering company. It arrived in Vancouver on Tuesday and moved over to a dock in North Vancouver on Wednesday morning.

AV can entertain 24 guests in 12 rooms and has a crew of 33 people. It features a large swimming pool on the deck, a private movie theatre and a jet pool jacuzzi.

The superyacht was designed by Michael Leach Design and soars in ’speed and style.’

It costs $10 to $20 million per year to run the yacht.

Website SuperYacht.com lists the owner of the AV as Dennis Washington, an 88-year-old American billionaire whose net worth is listed at US$6.4 billion and is ranked number 397 in Forbes' richest people in the world .

Washington, from Montana, claims to be ‘self-made’ and owns a copper mining, marine transportation and heavy equipment business, according to Forbes. He is married with two children. In an interview with Forbes.com, Washington said his passion is boats.

Washington’s network of companies includes Washington Marine Group and Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver, where Kyle Washington, Dennis Washington’s son, is executive chairman.

The AV Yacht was previously known as Palladium and is listed as an award-winning superyacht.  It was previously owned by Mikhail Prokhorov, a Russian oligarch and previous owner of the Brooklyn Nets. The yacht drew attention when The Late Show host Stephen Colbert visited Prokhorov on the yacht.

Superyachts flocking to Vancouver Island

Superyachts flock to B.C. every year. One recently drew attention in B.C.’s capital when a Brazilian billionaire docked in Victoria.

The 62-metre-long vessel called the Anawa was docked at Ship Point on May 30, clad with its own helicopter on deck.

Billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann owns the yacht, according to Superfanyacht.com. Forbes.com says the investor-philanthropist lives in Switzerland and is worth $14.8 billion.

Anawa was custom-designed and built in 2020 by Damen Yachting. It’s one of the company’s SeaXplorer class of vessels, billed as “long-range, luxury expedition” yachts.

It can carry 12 guests and 15 crew plus a captain, Damen said.

Back in 2020, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones's yacht was spotted in the  waters off Vancouver Island . The "Bravo Eugenia" is worth an estimated quarter-billion dollars.

The superyacht is designed to use 30 per cent less fuel than other vessels of its size and class but it doesn't skimp on amenities. The "Bravo Eugenia" can accommodate 14 guests and 30 crew members and features six guest suites, a beach lounge, spa and gym.

On Tuesday, the AV Yacht wasn’t the only yacht drawing attention. A 32-metre vessel called the Snowbored was passing through False Creek  with the final destination of Galiano Island.

The Snowbored, built by Westport in 2003, is a 32-metre vessel with a satin cherry wood interior, and a sundeck sporting a hot tub, wet bar, and lounge pads. It also has a fighting chair and rocket launcher for sport fishing, and can launch a Novurania tender and Yamaha waverunners.

In a statement to Glacier Media, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority says anyone wishing to view the Attessa V in Vancouver's inner harbour area by boat "is urged to ensure they do so from a safe distance." "We love seeing boaters and paddlers out enjoying the waters that make up the Port of Vancouver," says Jason Krott, manager of marine operations and fleet. "Our focus is working with all users to build the awareness and understanding needed to support a safe shared space for recreational and commercial traffic."

A General Description of Motor Yacht AV

This motor yacht AV is a 30 m 99 (ft) good sized GRP composite luxury yacht which was constructed by Azimut Yachts and concieved by Stefano Righini. The gracious superyacht has been designed with a naval architect called Stefano Righini.

New Build & Designing of Luxury Yacht AV

Stefano Righini was the naval architect involved in the professional nautical composition for AV. Stefano Righini is also associated with the yacht general design work for this boat. Italy is the country that Azimut Yachts completed their new build motor yacht in. After formal launch in 2004 in Viareggio the boat was afterwards passed over to the owner after sea trials and testing. Her hull was constructed with GRP composite. The motor yacht superstructure component is made largely using grp. With a beam of 7.15 metres / 23.5 feet AV has moderate interior. A reasonably shallow draught of 2.1m (6.7ft) limits the list of certain ports she can berth in, taking into account their minimum characteristics.

M/Y AV Engineering Figures & Speed:

Fitted with twin MTU diesel main engines, AV can reach a maximum speed of 32 knots. She is driven by twin screw propellers. She also has an economical range of 400 miles whilst motoring at her cruising speed of 28 knots. Her total HP is 4000 HP and her total Kilowatts are 2984.

Choosing Your Yacht's AV/IT System - 7 Things to Consider

yacht av price

Welcome to this, the first of many blogs in which we’ll question all aspects of our yachtie AV/IT life. Today, we’re looking at the reliability of the on board systems.

Despite there being such a high demand for it, the word ‘reliability’ is consistently overlooked when sourcing a new AV/IT system. Cost is a leading factor for some clients, while others tend to go for the very best in class equipment, integrators and even mediators, to carry out the management of the install.

The ship’s crew can start with the best intentions, needing or wanting to upgrade to a modern and reliable system. That's until they hand the quote to their management company, when all dreams of that vital upgrade can be squashed. Even if the AV system’s specifications are high in the planning stage, the powers above might choose ways to cut corners to achieve a middle ground.

We’d add that it’s important not to confuse the issue here, or to think that the most expensive systems are always the most reliable - the equipment needs to be designed correctly to make your AV/IT system all jive together.

With this in mind, my question is: if the concept of the upgrade starts with ‘it doesn’t seem right’, then why continue to spend vast quantities of money on a system that you aren’t totally confident in, or didn’t really want, because your management team approved it in a ‘half attempt’ of a system upgrade because they know best?

Below are the seven parts that make up your new AV/IT systems, and all play a very important role in the outcome of its ‘reliability’.

1. AV Integrator - IT Integrator- Mediator

This is the most important factor when deciding on a new system, as the integrator will be responsible for everything for your new AV/IT system. This includes design, planning, installation, commissioning, documentation and usually aftercare, through to a service contract, depending on your requirements. With many AV systems using a separate IT network to act as the backbone of their systems, like the Crestron NVX for example, the AV network is now actually based on an IT network using fibre and cat cables.

Some projects will like to go for separate AV and IT companies, along with a middle company that will write the specs – usually a consultancy company. This is ok but, in my opinion and from experience, communication gets lost. Assumptions are made on each other's behalf, even if you have a mediator, which can lead to finger-pointing and arguments.

The most successful projects that I have seen are those where one company undertakes the entire AV/IT scope - one company that takes sole responsibility for the works, documentation and aftercare. Cables will be labelled in the same manner, documentation will be in the same format, and you will have one point of contact when it comes to troubleshooting.

2. AV System Controller

On the topic of reliability, when you think AV hardware, the obvious and most stable choice on the market is Crestron - and rightly so. It's the most dominant player in our yachtie world but there are a couple of alternatives.

When it comes to control systems, there are three big players in our AV industry: Crestron, Control 4 and Savant. Crestron is by far the most popular and most customisable, Control 4 is a middle ground between Crestron and Savant. Savant offers a solid, less customisable, but very reliable AV hardware and solution, which can run on a mac server or mac mini which, as we know, offers a great AV hardware option.

You also don't have to worry about sourcing bespoke parts if it were to go wrong. Simply pop to any local store, purchase a mac mini and you’re up and running again. On most vessels, you will see Crestron as the go-to choice, mainly due to how customisable and scalable the entire ecosystem is and it's usually very robust.

3. IT Network & Security

The obvious go-to company is Cisco when it comes to IT systems like Crestron for the AV. You will see Cisco components on most vessels, but you'll also come across HP, Rukus, Netgear, Peplink and Ubiquiti networks. Ubiquiti, in particular, offers a simplified networking alternative to the rest.

In our experience, it's not so much about the IT hardware, but rather it’s most important to get the design of the IT topology and IT programming set up correctly. If you get this right, then all of the above IT hardware options should work well.

Here at the YOT Store, we often get asked to replace hardware but, as an added value service, we take a look at the ship's network remotely. This lets us see if there are any misconfigurations before simply selling you new hardware which will likely fail again with the same IT misconfiguration. As a result, we have managed to turn around many systems to the delight of both owners and crew.

IT security should be at the forefront of every IT architecture. With an increasingly wireless and wired connected environment, information is exposed to a growing number and wider variety of risks. Threats such as malicious code, computer hacking and denial-of-service attacks are now more common, ambitious and sophisticated, making implementing, maintaining and updating information security more of a challenge.

To combat this, you can install a firewall and cybersecurity. We take this very seriously at the YOT store and are fully accredited cybersecurity engineers and Kerio accredited engineers. You can find a full range of firewalls from Kerio, Fortinet, Sophos and Cisco on the YOT Store website.

Implementing information security in an organisation can protect the technology and information assets it uses by preventing, detecting and responding to threats, both internal and external. Make sure you get this part of your install right to protect it for its lifespan.

4. AV/IT System Setup

You have to decide what’s best for your yacht’s needs and how you want to interact with your AV and IT systems. An important thing to consider is what available space you have.

Next, do you require a centralised AV system where the AV and IT components are located in one location on board, distributing all sources from this central AV hub? Or, do you require a centralised rack with some of the AV equipment, i.e. TV decoders in the rack and AVR players, Apple TVs and Kaleidescape locally in each cabin?

Another option is to have the players and AVRs in one or two racks per deck. All of the above depends on space and availability, and how much new cabling you are running. With the above considered, if a problem occurs during a guest trip, the more components that aren't in the guest room/AV zone the better, as this will cause less disruption to the guests.

As I said above, a guest doesn’t want to see an AV guy in the room, but make sure your integrator gets the calculations right with cable lengths and types for the amount of data so no losses or interference occurs.

5. AV System Remote

This also depends on personal preference and it's a decision to be made in-house with your team. The usual options on how to control your systems are via the following:

Android devices

Crestron, RTi or equivalent

Traditional remote control

 6. AV Supply Company

At the YOT Store, we assist with design and advice on IT & AV system components for and your integrator. We are not an integrator and don’t intend to be.

We are qualified engineers in all our AV/IT product range. We offer a service where we can compete against any quote and we will offer free advice and design on your IT systems, AV systems, components and designs.

Top Tip: We recommend you find out how much warranty you have on each individual item. From the store, it can be five years but your integrator may only give you one year.

7 things to consider 1200x630

 7. The last 10%

The last part of the project always seems to be a bit of a let-down as the contractor’s job is done (in their eyes), but then along comes the snagging list within its first year of warranty. These jobs are general faults that the crew have picked up while living and working with the systems on board - it’s obvious that bits and pieces will pop up and need added attention, and these faults usually get rectified.

However, when large sums of money are involved, fingers can start to point because this or that wasn’t in or out of the scope. Now comes the final payment. Here the integrator holds the keys to the new AV system and holds the code, admin credentials and the new as-built drawings.

It’s a situation that can sometimes turn into a Mexican standoff, where the integrator wants their final payment and the ship’s management wants the final bits and pieces finished off. The integrator might claim these to be extras which are billable, while the management disagrees.

Unfortunately, sometimes the relationships turns sour and the contractor starts neglecting the vessel since, even if the ship owes them the final payment, they still hold the keys to the entire system and, when something goes wrong, the ship will need them.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to get these as-built drawings to be 100% and for all the documentation to be handed over correctly. As you will see on many ships, the documentation is lacking in certain areas. It is extremely important that the install doesn’t get to this stage and that you maintain a great relationship with your integrator.

For the AV companies that get the last 10% correct, I believe you will have a recurring customer for life, and usually the integrator will support their own system with a support contract to provide the yacht with assistance by phone or a visit to the vessel by their engineers for fault finding and conduct system upgrades.

With the above fully considered, don’t be that person who approves a system that doesn’t work for you, the yacht or the client (has anyone even asked the owner what they would like from their new system?). Before diving into a new upgrade, you must do your homework and, most importantly, think about who’s going to do it and what you want out of your new IT & AV system.

To conclude, the AV and IT system is at the forefront of the charter guests'/owner's experience and its operation must be 100%. This is why all of the above must be sorted out before you even think about pulling one cable on your upgrade. When you are purchasing a completely new system you really must consider all of the three R’s -Research, Reviews and Ratings.

Below is a link to an AV diagram on how to design an AV system and how big or small it can actually be. AV entertainment systems for superyachts

Shakespeare was right in saying that music stirs the soul and lifts the spirit. From the soaring strings of a Puccini aria to the thundering bass riff of a dub-step floor-filler, music has the power to move us. Similarly, watching Raging Bull or Blade Runner on a theatre-quality audio-visual (AV) system can be a breathtaking and immersive experience.

AV has undergone a major change in the last five years. With super-fast broadband and wireless routers in our homes, the digital revolution in AV allows us to stream music wirelessly, to view movies from the internet, show photos from our computers on our TVs, and surf on our tablets. Systems too expensive five years ago are affordable today and reward our thirst for instant gratification. Yet the ability to enjoy this instantaneous and unlimited access to digital programming is still in its infancy for yachts.

It’s all about bandwidth

Steve Segall, president of AV Concepts and Design in the US, explains that bandwidth is a big hurdle for an owner who wants to take entertainment technology in their home and bring it to their yacht.

‘Bandwidth is everything, because bandwidth equals speed,’ he says. ‘Though VSAT (very small aperture terminal) access to bandwidth on yachts is getting faster, this speed is expensive and is still going to feel slow compared to what an owner might experience at home.’

For yacht owners hoping to do away with an on-board server for digital entertainment and switch to live streaming from a source like Netflix or the cloud, experts agree this is a few years away.

‘Live streaming is great because there is instant access to just about anything. Trying to duplicate this experience will be neither instant nor gratifying if you are expecting fibre-optic quality and speed from data over a VSAT. Achieving comparable speeds from satellite data is not feasible today. Can you get close? There are boats that have tried, but hardware and service costs are astronomical and the result won’t be equivalent – for now, anyway,’ says Segall.

Most in the industry agree, and most prefer hardware and hard-copy media archives of digital music and movies on board, because the quality from CDs and DVDs is currently better than compressed files streamed from the internet.

Get the network right

In today’s market, there are things an owner needs for the AV system to be highly functional, high-performance and make the best use of the options available. Segall says it starts with VSAT and both a wired and wireless network on the boat. He also recommends every owner hire at least one tech-savvy crew member who can troubleshoot the technology.

According to Paul Cook of ANT, a British company that specialises in AV and IT for yachts of 60 metres and over, ‘The absolute key to a future-proof installation is the “backbone”, a network of fibre-optic or more traditional cabling that runs throughout the boat and from which all the elements of the AV and IT systems run.

‘We advise clients to “spend-to-save”, whereby they have an upgrade path installed long before they will need it. It’s cheaper in the long run, and avoids having to pull parts of the boat apart to install upgrades.’

This is echoed by Neil Grant, of Harris Grant Associates, one of the leaders in this field: ‘A quality “backbone” allows you a potential upgrade path regardless of what happens with the hardware.’

Hardware is usually specified as late as possible in the build process due to the time taken with most builds – there’s not much point in speccing today’s must-have kit for a yacht that won’t be delivered for another four years.

Many options are available for the AV display. You should start with a high-definition (HD) native 1,080p resolution, multi-standard, network-connected smart TV to make best use of what is available now, or coming soon. The current largest off-the-shelf displays are nearly 50 per cent larger than they were five years ago, maxing out at 153 inches.

Then there are the OLED panels, with ultra-thin screens, blisteringly fast refresh speeds, and exceptionally crisp images, at exceptionally high prices. Until recently, OLED screens have been limited to smaller sizes, but at CES (the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas) this year, both Samsung and LG unveiled their new 55-inch OLED TVs.

Something else to consider is 3D TV, which the home entertainment industry is trying to convince us is the Next Big Thing. The problems with 3D include limited content in programming, and how the 3D imagery is achieved. The viewer must wear glasses and must sit in a ‘sweet spot’ in front of the screen to get the best effect. When contemplating 3D, evaluate the room’s layout and the viewing angles for people seated in that space before committing to that technology.

But other technologies are coming that will make today’s 1080 HD look like a Movietone newsreel. Today’s HD (1920 x 1080 pixel resolution) is known a ‘2K technology’. That standard is about to double with the next generation of HD will be 4K. Pixel counts will double and resolution and colour will be exceptional.

DVD players remain a necessary extension of a yacht’s entertainment base, and Blu-ray is now the standard. Prices are on par with standard DVD players, disc prices are only slightly higher and their picture quality is far superior.

For now, the ultimate in on-board access to movies and music is still through a central server. There are many options for servers, and a budding trend is comprehensive, custom, multifunction systems that have been designed to suit an owner’s preferences and can be controlled by off-the-shelf devices like an iPad. Once the problems with limited bandwidth are overcome, expect the central server to be a thing of the past and the Cloud to take over.

Sound is the final ingredient of an AV recipe for which ‘season to taste’ is an appropriate metaphor. Sound is a much more diversified medium and personal preference will play a major role in weighing up sound options. You might even consider different systems for different functions.

For viewing movies and TV, a surround sound system of some sort is desirable, whereas audio purists often prefer their music to come from a more specific source, rather like sitting in front of a band or orchestra. For that reason many audiophiles will have one sound-system for the on-board movie theatre, and another for their music.

Finding an installer

Choosing a company to supply and install your system is not easy, but there are companies that specialise in varying levels of installations. Generally, you should expect it to have extensive experience in the superyacht market, and a long list of satisfied customers.

PSP in Germany, for instance, has been in the superyacht AV market for 15 years and worked on 20 yachts from 18 to 160 metres, with nine Lürssens including the 92m EOS and the 60m Vive La Vie.

‘The philosophy of PSP-AV,’ explains managing director Rudi Benedikt, ‘is that entertainment needs to be fun, it needs a high-quality network, with quality AoD [audio-on-demand] and VoD [video-on-demand] solutions, live TV, Blu-ray and 3D, and on-board cinemas of any size.

‘Our business includes consultation, planning, CAD, development, installation, programming, set-up, and after-sales service. Client liaison is vital, and when an owner spends €1.5 million for an entertainment system it is important they be handled like a financier, not as beta-tester.

‘We recommend hardware like Kaleidescape for VoD and AoD, RTI controller components, Crestron control systems, and Apple products – they have revolutionised portable entertainment, and most owners are Apple users already.’

Indeed, the iPad is now almost the default choice for remote controls, such is its ease of use and intuitive interface.

Home & Marine Electronic Systems (H&M), in Bremen, Germany, boasts a similarly impressive portfolio of yacht installations that includes Lady Moura, Octopus, Pelorus, Rising Sun, Al Shalamar and Le Grand Bleu, to name just a few. ‘For H&M it is paramount to take the customer’s wishes into consideration,’ explains MD Günter Trempnau. ‘This means that customers are allowed to dream, and we will turn their dreams into reality.

‘The devices we recommend are the best on the market. Customers can choose between leading brand names or exclusive small manufacturers that offer a truly impressive level of quality. We simply make our customers happy.’

Look and style

When it comes to the interior styling of a yacht, owners don’t necessarily want to stare at AV hardware all day. Firms like Lantic Entertainment Systems concentrate on developing the highly sophisticated networks that allow owners and guests to access an array of information and entertainment, without any of it being visible.

‘For all the expense and cutting-edge technology,’ explains Peter Bouman from Lantic, ‘the only clue for the owners and his guests that they are using a Lantic system will come from the apps on their tablet or smartphone to choose their next music track or movie, or view the state of financial markets.’

It’s hard to imagine that less than 10 years ago today’s essentials like on-board wireless networks and entertainment servers were ground-breaking technology. Today, these features are commonplace and yachts are able to stay connected and entertained like never before.

Charles in now working on my third Sunseeker yacht, the first being the Manhattan 65 in 2018, the Sunseeker 86 yacht in 2019 and now the latest work in progress which is the Sunseeker 116 yacht. Whilst the audio visual available from the ship builder is a fairly comprehensive system I really wanted a completely personalised bespoke system. We needed pure simplicity in terms of operating all of the audio visual systems, blinds, environmental controls, lighting and monitoring all areas of the boat for added guest and crew safety. With each boat the technology available has vastly improved, from the size and flexibility of the speakers, they can be almost invisible these days, to the line array speakers and the compactness and lightness of the outdoor cinema screen. I am still using the 86 whilst the 116 is under construction and enjoying every moment of the boat, though in only 24 months new AV tech has recently become available and is being readied for the 116 will make this a truly stand out yacht.

For all of the yachts we have built Charles has given us an end to end service from initial concept right through to wiring diagrams, rack design and stacking to even making sure we have the right TV channels for Mediterranean and Asia cruising.

M/Y Skye is the second yacht I have been skipper on that Charles, and Superyacht AV, has been responsible for. As Skipper, my main priorities regarding onboard AV are simple and intuitive control and reliability of use for the owner and guests alike. The yacht wide integration system onboard Skye means we can control everything from our phones, or the yacht’s iPads, without having to disturb anyone.

With neat and unobtrusive installation, Superyacht AV’s system is slick in both operation and presentation. Using Savant as the main control throughout. The audio quality in every area of the yacht is unsurpassed and testament to Charles’ skill and experience, with 4k video distribution we have the whole package onboard. Support and communication is quick and easy, and nothing is ever too much trouble.
