The Marshall Tucker Band and Jefferson Star Ship to Blast Off on 2024 ‘Live on Cloud 9 Tour’

The two bands have a history dating back to the 1970s, and MTB lead singer Doug Gray couldn’t be more thrilled about reuniting with Jefferson Starship.

“We have a storied history with Jefferson Starship,” explains Gray. “We toured together many years ago and the timing feels right for us to reunite. We’re on Cloud 9!”

“We are really looking forward to touring with our buddies, The Marshall Tucker Band,” says Donny Baldwin of Jefferson Starship. “We toured back in the day, and it will be a great night of music from two iconic bands. See you there!”

The tour kicks-off February 29 at the Sycuan Casino Resort in El Cajon, CA. Tickets go on-sale October 20 at 9 AM (local time), in each respective market. For ticketing information, visit  marshalltucker.com  or  jeffersonstarship.com .

T he Marshall Tucker Band and Jefferson Starship are reuniting for a joint tour. The two bands are teaming up on the 2024 Live on Cloud 9 Tour that takes them across the Northwest in February and March on the first leg of the tour that kicks off on February 29 in El Cajon, California, and wraps up on March 10 in Airway Heights, Washington. More dates are expected to be announced. Tickets go on sale on October 20 at 9 a.m. local time.

“We have a storied history with Jefferson Starship,” The Marshall Tucker Band frontman Doug Gray says in a press release. “We toured together many years ago and the timing feels right for us to reunite. We’re on Cloud 9! We will be announcing many more dates very soon.”

“We are really looking forward to touring with our buddies, The Marshall Tucker Band,” Jefferson Starship’s Donny Baldwin adds. “We toured back in the day, and it will be a great night of music from two iconic bands.”

Jefferson Starship is a spinoff of Jefferson Airplane, founded in 1974. In 1975, they released their most successful album, Red Octopus, which features one of their hit singles, “Miracles.” They’re also known for “We Built This City,” “With Your Love,” and “Count on Me.” The band has released 11 studio albums since 1974, their most recent being Mother of the Sun in 2020. Starship spent part of the summer of 2023 on Bret Michaels’ Parti-Gras Tour .

Like Jefferson Starship, The Marshall Tucker Band rose to fame in the 1970s with their self-titled debut album in 1973. They achieved their highest-charting song in 1977 with “Heard it in a Love Song” which peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band is named after a man named Marshall Tucker , a blind piano tuner in South Carolina who signed his name on one of the pianos in the studio where the band rehearsed. Tucker passed away in 2023 at the age of 99.

When you wake up and want to put a smile on your face, you think of the songs that always manage to reach down and touch your soul the moment you hear the first note. The Marshall Tucker Band is one such group that continues to have a profound level of impact on successive generations of listeners who’ve been “Searchin’ for a Rainbow” and found it perfectly represented by this tried-and-true Southern institution over the decades. “I’ve been in tune with how music can make you feel, right from when I was first in the crib,” explains lead vocalist and bandleader Doug Gray, who’s been fronting the MTB since the very beginning. “I was born with that. And I realized it early on, back when I was a little kid and my mom and dad encouraged me to get up there and sing whatever song came on the jukebox. It got to the point where people were listening to me more than what was on the jukebox! There’s a certain gift I found I could share, whether I was in front of five people or 20,000 people. I was blessed with that ability and I’m thankful I can share with others.”

The Marshall Tucker Band came together as a young, hungry, and quite driven six-piece outfit in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1972, having duly baptized themselves with the name of a blind piano tuner after they found it inscribed on a key to their original rehearsal space — and they’ve been in tune with tearing it up on live stages both big and small all across the globe ever since. Plus, the band’s mighty music catalog, consisting of more than 20 studio albums and a score of live releases, has racked up multi-platinum album sales many times over.   As many of you know, this years traveling was unexpectedly cut short by unforeseen circumstances.

However we still managed to enjoy Mexico and Central America.

Nicaragua and costa rica..

I will be the first to admit that my pre conceived ideas of Central America were totally wrong, It's fantastic and we love it. 

Every country so far has been filled with culture, beauty and unbelievable hospitality. 

We entered Nicaragua without any drama at El Espino and Pat ( who plans everything ) had arranged to stay with a local family just a few kilometres after the frontier. 

The parking in their yard was tight but our host "Fausto and his very extended family welcomes us with open arms into their small community.

Knowing that we had so much more to see in Nicaragua we made the decision to cross into Costa Rica as the rainy season is looming and we felt that we could revisit the upper Central American countries again on our return journey back towards Mexico in a few months.

We crossed at Penas Blancas and had arranged to meet up with some old friends and fellow travellers from Switzerland, Simon, Doris and Herbert.  

A rustic camp site just outside La Cruz was the perfect location. We had only been parked for a few minutes when we were exposed to the joys of the famous Costa Rican wildlife.  It's hard to see from these photos but this female had a day old baby clinging to its chest.

This is a two toed sloth.  Based simply on its geographical location it is probably more accurately called the Hoffmans Two Toed Sloth. It is estimated that there are fewer than 1500 Sloths left in the wild. However, the Hoffman's two Toed sloth isn't considered the rarest and isn't classed as endangered, unlike its smaller cousin the Pigmy Sloth. 

Sloths spend most of their lives upside down in trees and rarely come down to ground level.

It was wonderful to meet up with old friends and a big thank you to Simon who helped me eventually fix the Air Conditioning on the truck, which had been sorely missed. 

Costa Rica, quite rightly, is a very popular tourist destination for Americans, Canadians and Europeans. It is their biggest industry. Unfortunately, this has encouraged high prices and everything has a cost attached to it. 

The Leona Waterfall hike ( must be guided ) was no exception, but my thinking is that in 10 years' time I will still remember the hike but not the cost. 

Two weeks after we visited the beautiful Rincon Lodge near the summit of Volcano Rincon de la Vieja it decided to burst into action and gently reminded the world that it was only sleeping.

The whole rainforest canopy can be discovered from trails and walkways above the trees during a moderate 2 km walk.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
