Top 100 Superyachts of Asia-Pacific 2020, Nos. 61-80: Yacht Style
Yacht Style rolls out Nos. 61-80 from its annual Top 100 Superyachts of Asia-Pacific, made up of yachts in the 52-56m bracket.
- Lady Candy, 56m Benetti
- Genesis, 56m Benetti
See also #61 above. The vessels are based at Gold Coast Marina on the western New Territories side of Hong Kong, and despite the similarities, they are actually custom outfitted and operated in completely different ways.
- Fidelis 56m, Perini Navi
One of a fleet of Perini Navis that constantly cruise Asia-Pacific waters, Fidelis has spent considerable time in the South Seas, and when this was written had arrived in Singapore after exploring the beautiful waters of New Caledonia, a French-Melanesian group less than 1,000nm off the Queensland Coast. It has the world’s second-largest barrier reef after the nearby Great Barrier Reef.
- Lili, 55m Amels
- Halo, 55m Feadship
Another visitor to Marina Taina in Papeete, Halo was inspired by Helix which cruised Asia-Pacific for a year on behalf of this leading Dutch yard. It was the last of a series, and could be delivered in a mere 33 months from Feadship’s Van Lent facility. Bought by a lady, she is reported to be “following the sun”, and indeed she was recently in Cairns in north Queensland to be followed by Denpasar in Bali, Indonesia.
- Driftwood, 55m Amels
“We are confident that the Amels 180 is the most successful 55m superyacht design ever, with more than 20 deliveries since 2007,” says Rose Damen, an increasingly frequent traveller to Asia on behalf of both Damen Shipyards and subsidiary Amels. Driftwood , another example of the species, has been cruising in French Polynesia, was in Honolulu in the Hawaiian Islands after that, and is lately on a sojourn to the Pacific Coast of Central America.
- Samax, 55m Feadship
- Papa, 55m Amels
- Adele, 55m Vitters
This classic Hoek-designed super sailboat was built by Vitters and delivered in 2005, then refitted at Royal Huisman before her current cruise to the South Seas, starting in French Polynesia, and by late 2019 ensconced at Westhaven Marina in Auckland, New Zealand. She has luxury accommodation for 10 guests in four cabins.
- Ocean Paradise, 55m Benetti
- Ark Angel, 55m HYS
- Keri Lee 111, 54m Trinity
Another Australian-owned superyacht that charters far and wide, her interiors feature some interesting original artworks, and principal furnishings are French antique. The vessel was offered in Southeast Asia, and in recent seasons has tried the Med market; located late 2019 in Genoa.
- Maridome, 54m Brooke Marine
Longest-standing member of the Melbourne superyacht club, retailer Solomon Lew keeps this distinctively-designed vessel built at England’s Brooke Marine in the Med lately, cruising the Greek and Turkish Rivieras at the latter end of the season, but equally he has waved from astern during past cruises in Phuket. One trucking mate has taken delivery of the Amels Volpini 2 , so a matching upgrade may be in the wind, although Lew also has the 45m Texas which he uses for Australian cruises.
- Talisman Maiton, 54m Proteksan Turquoise
Newly available for charter in Southeast Asia via Burgess, this 2006 build by one of Turkey’s premier superyacht yards was refurbished in 2012. Says the agency: “Boasting an enormous open plan sun deck and an eclectically-styled interior, which blends eye-catching Asian influences with art deco features, this vessel is a perennially popular charter yacht”. Master and VIP cabins on the principal deck are complemented by six individual “boutique cabins”. She recently provided aid to Surin sea gypsies after a fire, and has taken part in the popular Below Decks reality TV series.
- Drumbeat, 53m Alloy Yachts
Part of a growing fleet of superyachts that call French Polynesia and Fiji home, with occasional refit and repair runs to Auckland where Drumbeat was built. David Jamieson of Asia-Pacific Superyachts talks these days of 50-60 big boats in the extensive Fiji archipelago. Bart Kimman, Hong Kong-based leading agent for Camper and Nicholsons in the region, says that sales activity among the super sailboats is quite vibrant.
- Mischief, 52m Baglietto
Taking advantage of late Med autumn weather, Mischief was on the Turkish Riviera mid-October. Fun-loving Australian businessman Ian Malouf has offered her for sale after cruising in Europe for some years, but we are told the vessel has not yet changed hands.
- Elysium, 52m Benetti
- Seashaw, 52m Cheoy Lee
- Jade 959, 52m Jade Yachts
- Deniki, 52m Amels 171
Presently cruising in New Zealand, Deniki came up in conversation for other reasons when Tim Heywood’s 15-year sojourn as sole exterior designer of the remarkably successful Amels Limited Editions was broken by the announcement of an Espen Øino LE. “I’m sure the first one was Deniki ,” said Heywood, recalling an early naughties media conference in Monaco, “and I think she still has the same owner.” The vessel’s eclectic interior by Peter Heuvelmans fuses oriental and classical styles. She does some charters, sleeping 10 guests in five suites, including the master.

Meet Star of the Sea, Singapore’s largest yacht available for charter
Star of the Sea is the latest addition to Evangeline Wong’s existing fleet of yachts, who’s also the founder of Valencia Yachts, one of the leading yacht chartering operators in Singapore
Editor’s note: See other Mind Your Business interviews here .
Yacht charter owner Evangeline Wong distinctly recalls the first time she laid eyes on a Leopard catamaran during the 2014 Singapore Yacht Show . It was love at first sight, kickstarting a personal affair with yachting that eventually blossomed into a full-fledged yacht chartering business. She founded Valencia Yachts in 2015, which has since grown into one of the largest yacht chartering operators in Singapore, before branching out with another company called Maximum Yachts .
To-date, her crowning achievement lies in Star of the Sea, which recently made its debut in the local yacht chartering scene. At 128 feet, the superyacht is the largest yacht available for charter in Singapore. Having undergone a refurbishment this year, the high-performance vessel boasts swanky interiors that go hand in hand with her sleek exterior.
“Star of the Sea is a game-changer in Singapore’s yacht-chartering scene” says Wong. “Her addition to our existing fleet is a response to our consumers’ growing demand for an ever-increasing affluent and luxurious lifestyle.”
What are some of the benefits of chartering a yacht as compared to owning one?
Aspiring first-time yacht owners should recognise that it’s a lot of work, honestly. A yacht’s usage must justify the exorbitant maintenance costs and efforts. They must also be able to get a berth in Singapore. In contrast, chartering a yacht is hassle-free. There are no headaches with regards to hiring a crew, or racking up any recurring berthing, maintenance or replacement costs.
What are some of the current yacht chartering trends in Singapore?
There’s been an increasing demand over the years for bigger builds. In the past, it used to be limited to 30 or 40-footers. Now, larger yachts are coming into play and there’s been a growing interest in 50-footers and beyond.
Space is a premium, especially on a yacht—nowhere more so than on a superyacht, where the sheer size, decor and detailing are a cut above the rest. It represents a different kind of lifestyle, which will continue to gain traction in the future.
What can guests expect onboard Star of the Sea?
The story behind Star of the Sea is very special to me and my family. She’s truly a one-of-a-kind superyacht, having been built here in Singapore. We named her Star of the Sea to symbolise an abundance of blessings and safe voyages out at sea.
When berthed, Star of the Sea carries up to 150 passengers, making her ideal for dockside parties and corporate events. Out at sea, she can accommodate 50 guests across six spacious cabins, perfect for cruising to the exotic Anambas or Tioman islands.
On the main deck, you’ll find an indoor wine bar and 14-seater dining table, with plenty of social areas onboard. There’s also a karaoke lounge and outdoor jacuzzi on the upper deck, which boasts unobstructed views of the sea. Meanwhile, the expansive flybridge is furnished with a full cocktail and sushi bar, with the option for outdoor dining as well.
For those who prefer being out on the water, there’s a host of water toys and equipment onboard, such as a six-man tender, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.
What are some of the other notable yachts in your fleet?
The make and design of each yacht will naturally appeal to different groups of people, depending on their budgets, group sizes and the type of occasion—it could be a corporate meeting, private party, weekend getaway or perhaps a wedding proposal.
Victoria, a Leopard 39 PC, and Valencia, a Leopard 51 FT, are best-suited for smaller families as they feature ergonomic designs, with an emphasis on outdoor spaces. Our Maximum 1 and 2 catamarans, on the other hand, have ample indoor spaces and are great for mid-sized groups. Of course, those yearning for a top-of-the-line experience should look no further than Star of the Sea, our latest pride and joy.
In the future, we plan to expand the yacht chartering business, not just locally but to extend the concept and level of service to overseas markets too.

S$128.8m sale of Nassim Road bungalow sets record transaction price of S$4,005 psf
By Kalpana Rashiwala
A RECORD price of S$4,005 per square foot on land area has been set in the Good Class Bungalow market for a transaction in Nassim Road. Already, some market watchers are predicting that the next bungalow to be sold in the prized location is likely to surpass this price.
The benchmark psf price achieved is for a S$128.8 million transaction last month. The buyer is Jin Xiao Qun, the wife of Nanofilm Technologies International founder and executive chairman Shi Xu. The Singapore citizens became a billionaire couple following the company's successful listing on the mainboard of the Singapore Exchange in October last year.
On the 32,159 sq ft freehold site is an old bungalow. It is being sold by Oei Siu Hoa, also known as Sukmawati Widjaja, the controlling shareholder of Top Global.
She acquired the bungalow, named Ladyvale, for S$30.3 million in late 2006 from David Eng of Sparks disco fame; he in turn had bought it from the British government in December 2000 for S$19.3 million or S$600 psf.

On The Seas With Yacht Broker David Seal
Arguably, David Seal is the world’s most well-known yacht broker. A team member with Northrop and Johnson, David is a pioneer in the YouTube marketing of yachts that only an extremely minor fraction of YouTube viewers can afford.
But David’s vision and efforts have paid off handsomely. His channel, Yachts For Sale , has already exceeded 11 million views, while viewership continues to increase, by virtue of 100,000 typical views per day.
There has been some criticism that marketing yachts to deca-millionaires and billionaires on YouTube is more “infotainment” than shrewd sales strategy. However, David has proven naysayers wrong many sales over. In fact, it is yacht owner fantasists that drive viewership, which, in turn, puts David’s videos at the top of search engines, such as Google. When billionaires search for yachts to buy, it is David’s yachts that appear at the top of the search results. Moreover, because billionaires also enjoy the simple pleasures of life, so too do they also enjoy perusing YouTube. They may have many assets, but time is one of their most precious assets. YouTube shopping helps prospective time-poor yacht owners hone-in on the yachts that they want to tour in person, wherever the yachts may be in the world.
Given David’s decades of yacht brokerage experience and his more recent Internet fame, Jim Simon for Jetgala had a chance to go “on the seas with” David to ask him about his perception of current trends in the yacht industry as well as his predictions for the future.
When thinking about current trends in the yacht industry, it seems that the adoption of onboard technology is a key trend. Are there any specifics in tech that we can see now?
Environmentally friendly technology is hot right now. Diesel-electric propulsion is perceived to be environmentally friendly and as such, it is commercially successful.
People are increasingly cruising off the beaten track – Alaska, north of Norway, and the Galapagos, just to name a few. In some destinations, you must show that your yacht has limited emissions in order to pass through. Previously, emissions limited access to small yachts. However, we’re seeing larger displacement yachts like the 54M Mangusta “El Leon” calling on the Galapagos, which is now on its way to Alaska.
Are tastes in yachts changing?
Indeed. The market is thinning a bit on “go-fast” yachts. Instead, we are seeing greater demand for longer-range yachts.
We are also seeing more demand for “resort-style” yachts. For instance, Baglietto Yachts are finding that their customers want yachts where the sides open up to form a stylised beach club. The challenge with beach clubs, of course, is that they take the spaces that are traditionally used for tenders. In response, people are now towing smaller boats behind their yachts like a 108’ Mangusta that I filmed recently that tows a 27’ Goldfish RIB.
Here in Singapore, we have seen firsthand that some yacht owners who wished their current yachts to be larger commission yacht builders to build larger replicas. Is this a trend that you are seeing on a macro scale?
Yachts are definitely getting larger. In 1995, there was a trend for Ferretti Yachts, where there were seven to eight yachts, each 70–80ft long, in construction at the same time. Fast-forward to today and Lürrsen Yachts seem to have just as many 120–140m yachts in construction at the same time.
Bigger yachts mean more space, which often translates into a bigger pool and even a helicopter-landing pad.
What are yacht owners doing with their yachts when they’re not in use?
Most yacht owners will make their yachts available for charter, and many are turning charters into experiences with souvenir videos to take home. Take Arience, one of the most popular yachts available for charter at $750,000 per week. The service and décor are amazing, and the crew leverage on technology like GoPros to help capture customers’ entire experience, such as on WaveRunners, swimming in crystal clear waters, and more.
What are your predictions for the yacht industry?
We will definitely see electric yachts in the near future. Small electric boats exist already but they do not have the range that a yacht requires. Automotive is going that way; it may take a while but [electric yachts] will happen.
Another prediction is that the Chinese market will come on line. They’ve been buying yacht builders but not that many yachts. Soon, they will want their own.
Private jets are sometimes called “offices in the sky” because high-speed Wi-Fi allows executives to be productive while traveling. Do you believe that yachts will follow the same and be “offices on the seas” allowing executives to work and relax aboard their yachts?
It’s highly unlikely that this will happen. After all, yachts are for relaxing; not working, and they are a place to escape to.
