They have this operation dialed in. It is short but very sweet. The open bar and fun, yet competent, staff makes for good times on the water. The views are great, they have good music going, and it is fun meeting other folks on board. Definitely check it out!

What a wonderful experience! The crew was friendly and fun. The drinks were tasty and plentiful. The sunset was gorgeous and the moonrise was a terrific bonus. I highly recommend!

This was a great experience. This sail is very calm and relaxing and a completely different experience from the trade wind sails, where you expect to get tossed around and get wet. The crew was very friendly and attentive. The sunset was gorgeous, even though it was overcast all day. My wife and I now prefer this sail over the trade winds sails we have done in the past. Great sail!

My friend was visiting me on the island and we both loved this experience! The crew is so refreshing and fun! It was a mix of young and old! It was a great time! Would definitely recommend!

This is the best deal in Waikiki. Was there for a week and went on this cruise three times. ~$30 for one hour sail with open bar. So, you can sit in a hotel bar and nurse one drink or be on the ocean enjoying amazing views, listen to lively music and chug down multiple drinks. No brainer. Shout out to Dustin for the amazing sailing experience.

This was a total blast! The guys running the boat were friendly and entertaining. The sites were phenomenal. The sea life is gorgeous. And the drinks were very good. I booked a second trip, can’t wait to sale again!

Rave Reviews

Traveling at the age of 20 with your friends is a guaranteed fun time but when you do amazingly fun excursions like the Makani Catamaran, it just makes your vacations a thousand times better! My friends and I had such a great time thanks to your amazing staff. They’re very nice and very helpful. I’ve been on the catamaran three times and every time it just seems to get better and better. I highly recommend Makani Catamaran, MAHALO!!! oh and we saw turtles and DOLPHINS on our sail, IT WAS AMAZING!!!

This was by far the best catamaran we have been on! The staff is AMAZING. The crew is so helpful and funny. They make you feel like your part of their crew for sure. We loved spending time on the water and hearing all they had to say about the islands and animals. The captain was great! We will be doing this again!

We saw a sea turtle and a group of dolphins followed us for a while and did some "tricks". No whales on this trip but the crew made the experience fun by telling jokes and talking about the animals.

I can't say enough nice things about our trip on the Makani Catamaran! The staff were warm and friendly, the drinks we're tasty and the views were breathtaking. We had the opportunity to stand in the Captain's Galley and take photos. Captain Jon was so accommodating and thoughtful - he even offered to take our picture. This is one experience you do not want to miss out on! Highly recommend.

The boat was in great shape, staff was very professional and committed to safety. I appreciated that more than anything. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone visiting the Island, the views are well worth it. Great value trip!

So, full disclosure I was pretty skeptical that this would be fun at all. In fact, this was totally my wifes idea. That said, of all the things we did in Hawaii, this ended up being one of my favorites. We had been doing pushing ourselves pretty hard for several days up to this point and it was just really nice to sit back for a couple hours with drinks in hand and hang out as a family. We sat on the netting in the front and our 9,7, and 5 year old kids thought it was awesome to watch the water go by underneath and at one point even had some dolphins following us. 100% would suggest and will definitely do again.

I am so happy that I booked this during our trip to Hawaii. The crew was nice, hospitable, and very engaging. They made the sail super fun for everyone on board. Our captain was even able to show us sea turtles and a whale, even though we were not promised that when booking! Plus there was a full service bar and the drinks were awesome! I would definitely recommend to everyone. It is definitely worth it.

Awesome experience.

We had a great time at the turtle canyon morning snorkel tour. The crew was super friendly and helpful and it was very safe, even you had never snorkeled before you could enjoy this. We saw half a dozen different turtles, surfacing and all. Awesome experience.

Great catamaran crew. This was the best experience we had during our time herein HI. We had the whole boat to ourselves for 2 hours. We sailed, snorkeled, and swam with sea turtles. I highly recommend this over those large group snorkeling excursions with the huge crowds. Very personal experience for our family. Would do this again on our next trip for sure.

Great time snorkeling with this crew! We saw a lot of fish and many sea turtles. My daughter loved jumping off the side of the boat over and over! Drinks were great too!

My husband and I had a wonderful time on the 2:30 Sunset Cruise. The guys sailing us out were super nice. It was beautiful on the water, and we even saw a turtle in the water! The Mai Tai drinks they had on board, were actually the best we had the entire trip. I would defiantly recommend this experience! P.S. you could get soaked...we did :-)

Best way to end the day in Oahu!

Discover the beautiful views of the ocean, local wildlife, the iconic east side of Oahu, and the sun dipping into the sea as you join us on a private catamaran cruise in Waikiki . We’ll depart from Kewalo Basin Harbor located in Honolulu and make our way up the coastline to Diamond Head, making stops along the way for any turtles, dolphins, or whales we may spot during our journey.

Once at the top of our route, we will find a calm anchorage to relax at and enjoy the Hawaii sunset. Guests are welcome to join me for guided snorkeling and swimming or just dip their toes in the water as we soak in the beautiful afternoon. Lastly, we will watch the sunset in the ocean as we head back to the harbor.

The vessel is exclusively reserved for your party so you are welcome to play your own music and bring any refreshments you would like to enjoy during our time together. I’ll happily be sharing my local knowledge and the cultural history of the area we are traveling in throughout the cruise. There is no better way to end the day!

Booked the sunset catamaran for our family. Can not say enough amazing things about the boat, crew, and service they provided. They were very patient with 2 kids snorkeling, answered all our questions, and we even got to see dolphins. Such a wonderful experience, definitely a must do experience in Oahu! You will not be disappointed.

Best thing we did on the islands! Crew was very knowledgeable about the island. We snorkeled with sea turtles and fish. A pod of dolphins unexpectedly joined us on our sunset cruise. I was just lovely. Would 10000% recommend.

This was our second time using Hawaii Ocean Charters we had Captain Sam whom we had in the fall of 2022 and Nick as well. Sam remembered us from our trip in the fall. We were greeted with warm welcomes and after a brief safety refresher we were on our way. We stopped to swim for a little bit. They gave my daughter a mask so she could dive down and see all the fish. They really do a great job to make sure everyone is comfortable and both Sam and Nick were super personable. I would highly recommend using them. If you don’t want to mess with a bunch of strangers on a sunset catamaran this is certainly the way to go.

We had a great sunset cruise! it was so nice having the entire catamaran to ourselves. We could sit upfront on the nets (with a bean bag to support our backs no less) or go up top with the captain for great views and conversation. The crew was great, and we will definitely be doing this tour again next time we are in Waikiki.

Can't say enough good things about Alan and his crew!! So kind. So knowledgeable of the island. We swam up close with turtles and had a freshly made lunch served. We felt like celebrities. Highly recommend!!

What an awesome afternoon with Sail Oahu! Captain Alan, First Mate Wanda, and crew are first class in every way. We had a beautiful day with stunning views of Waikiki and Diamond Head - with wine, beer, and a delicious lunch to top off the trip. The sailboat was impeccable, impressive and well appointed. We felt well cared for and very welcome. We are looking forward to our next visit to the island and another afternoon with Sail Oahu.

Sail Oahu was Soo Much Fun!!! I had the best day celebrating my birthday!! Captain Alan and First Mate Wanda will make your Trip so enjoyable! They are amazing hosts! And their boat is so classy! I felt like a princess! And the views of Diamond Head were breathtaking!! I will definitely Sail with them again!!

Sail Oahu was one of the most exciting, tranquil, humbling experiences of my life. Capt. Alan, his mate Wanda, and the entire crew were so welcoming & warm. They were particularly great with my nieces and nephews (ages 3-10) as well! They always put safety and comfort first! The sailboat itself is beautiful and lavish. The views of the Island from the open water were breathtaking. I will definitely Sail Oahu every trip I make to the island.

Also, I see there is a $20 extra charge for unlimited open bar on Makani. We'd only want a couple of drinks but happy to pay this if the cocktails are a bit higher quality than the sugary mai tai mix I've had on some sails in the past. Thoughts on the drink quality? Appreciate opinions.

Yes and preferably one that doesn't board from the water and does not include dinner. Staying at Waikiki Sheraton but we can get anywhere on the Waikiki coast to board.

catamaran in waikiki

I hadn't heard of that one - looks interesting as it is a private sailing for up to 6 people one price. BYOB is not a problem.

Thanks - that looks great but it does appear that it now leaves from Kewalo Harbor unless I missed seeing HHV on the website.

catamaran in waikiki

I know you want a catamaran that leaves from a dock but there is a wonderful catamaran on the beach in front of the Outrigger, so not far from the Sheraton. You can book a sunset sail on their website for $40/each and drinks are reasonable or you can BYOB. They are really nice and will help you with boarding the boat. Been sailing with them for over 40 years. https://www.kepoikai.com/

Kepoikai sure would be convenient - my husband is concerned about his "old" knees:)

Commercial boat operators to get full access to maui’s mala wharf.

Mala Wharf in Lahaina will be open to commercial boaters seven days a week beginning Saturday. Above, Len Storey backs his 22-foot fishing catamaran Kazuo into the water at the boat ramp.

Maui’s west-side commercial boating operators are getting some relief from the business impacts of the Maui wildfires with the state’s decision to lift temporary restrictions at Mala Wharf and its announcement that the rebuilding of a fueling system is underway at Lahaina Small Boat Harbor.

The state Department of Health also declared Thursday that the coastal waters around Lahaina are safe for ocean recreation, which is likely to validate use for offshore recreational and commercial users as well as recreational and commercial boats.

DOH said it came to its conclusion after reviewing test results from multiple monitoring activities including state agencies and community partners, among them the University of Hawaii, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Surfrider Foundation.

Deputy Director for Environmental Health Kathleen Ho said in a statement, “These results provide the community with reassurance that the coastal waters around Lahaina are safe for ocean recreation with no significant human health impacts as a result of the wildfires. We continue to advise residents to heed brown water advisories, as bacteriological quality remains a concern at all times in brown water conditions. DOH appreciates the collaboration and partnership of our community partners and DLNR in monitoring environmental quality in Lahaina.”

DOH said it will continue to monitor coastal environmental quality in Lahaina along with its partners, and reminded the public that access at certain coastal zones in Lahaina still are not open for ocean recreation.

Lahaina Small Boat Harbor sustained $30 million worth of damage in the Aug. 8 Maui wildfires, and its destruction continues to affect recreational users as well as Maui’s activities and attractions market, which is struggling to recover.

The U.S. Coast Guard completed the salvage of all Lahaina Harbor vessels in December, and the state has begun addressing its checklist to safely reopen Lahaina Harbor, which could require dredging.

The fuel system vendor for Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, Pacific Fuels, is rebuilding the fire-damaged, above-ground portion of the fueling system at no cost to the state.

DLNR said the fueling system restoration, which is targeted for completion May 18, at popular Lahaina Harbor is the first of many projects to fully restore the harbor to full operations.

Finn McCall, a DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation engineer, said in a statement, “Probably until it’s fully restored, you know, we’re estimating maybe about three years.”

Heidi Speedie, operations manager of Kolea Charters, which had operated Reefdancer, a semi-sub destroyed in Lahaina Harbor, said the DOH ruling is important for members of the West Maui commercial boating fleet.

She said more convenient access to fuel also is important, especially for the operators, whose boats are too large to fill up at gas stations, and have had to take fuel to their boats via skiffs.

“It will help the boats that already exist in Kaanapali and Mala, but it can’t help a Lahaina Harbor boat like mine,” she said. “You can fill up your boat, but you’ll never use your fuel if you can’t put a passenger on the boat. It’s only good for people that are able to do business.”

Speedie said Mala Wharf commercial boaters also will get some grace Saturday when DLNR allows them to return to Mala Wharf seven days a week, instead of banning holiday and weekend use.

“It’s just too bad that they couldn’t have reopened in time for whale watching season, which starts in mid- December and is finished before mid-May,” Speedie said. “Whale watching season for commercial boaters is like the end-of-the-year holiday season is for retailers. We had lots of bad weather this year, so between the holiday and weekend restrictions, operators were seeing weekly cuts to business ranging from 25% to 50%.”

DLNR said it began restricting access for many reasons to commercial boats on weekends when Mala Wharf reopened in October. Those reasons included “the absence of a Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) office in West Maui; the lack of operational restrooms; potential health risks from exposure to contaminants in the ocean, and the unsafe conditions of nearshore waters due to debris from the August 2023 wildfires. Concerned Lahaina residents also indicated they wanted commercial operations restricted.”

Kekai Keahi, whose grandmother’s house is about 150 to 200 yards from the ramp at Mala Wharf, called DLNR/DOBOR’s reversal “devastating.”

He said the community already had made clear to DLNR/DOBOR that commercial use at Mala Wharf should not be allowed before undergoing a Ka Pa‘akai analysis, which provides a framework for assessing impacts to Native Hawaiian constitutionally protected rights. He contends that such an analysis would not uphold commercial use.

“My dad (Moke Keahi) and people of his generation was the ones that led that fight to build (Mala Wharf). It wasn’t the state; it was the people here who was pushed out of Lahaina harbor who couldn’t even go fishing anymore. It was their ocean, their fight.

“It’s just a small little ramp, not even a harbor. For them to fight so hard just to give us a place to go so we can subsist, to be run over by tourism again is history repeating itself. If my generation doesn’t do something about it now, then my boy’s generation is going to suffer real bad.”

It’s unclear whether the full restoration of Mala Wharf operating hours will stick.

DLNR said an attorney for two commercial operators had requested that the Mala Wharf restriction be lifted, and in a response letter DLNR Chair Dawn Chang advised, “Please be aware that we are currently working on amending DOBOR administrative rules to implement commercial activity prohibitions on weekends and holidays at Mala Wharf and other boating facilities, similar to the Kaneohe Bay restrictions on Oahu.”

Kekai Keahi said, “When I see it I’ll believe it.”
