Marine Dolphin & Seal Cruise

Search for the Namibian Marine Big 5 - meet clumsy pelicans, view boisterous seals and, if luck permits, see leaping dolphins, playful whales, mysterious mola and shy turtles - all this and more on our daily morning educational marine dolphin and seal cruises.

We set sail between 08h45 and 09h00 (check-in 08h30) every morning from our Jetty at the Walvis Bay Waterfront for a marine educational marine excursion in the bay area in search of the Namibian Marine Big 5:  Whales, Dolphins, Mola, Leatherback turtle and seals.  While serving hot coffee and tea, our initial route takes us past oyster farms as we approach Pelican Point with its landmark lighthouse and 60,000 resident Cape Fur Seals.

We round the point and head into the open sea.  In season (July to November), larger mammals such as the Southern Right Whale and Humpback Whales are often spotted, while other whale species, such as the Gray whale and the Pygmy Right whale have made appearances.   

The waters around Walvis Bay is home to three different types of dolphins. Of these the common bottlenose dolphin is most common. Heaviside’s dolphins are much smaller but very social dolphins all along the Namibian coast. They are very fast swimmers and very active, social animals that often occur in groups of 10 or sometimes more. Watching these dolphins jump and cartwheel is a spectacle that brings pure joy. The dusky dolphin is another of the species with superior aerial skills and guests are often entertained by their skillful aerial performances.

Sunfish, or mola as they are also known, are easily one of the oddest-looking fish anyone could lay eyes on. This bony fish that resembles a fish head with a tail can grow very large and weigh up to 1,000 kilograms. It’s peculiar looks and sheer size makes the mola one of our most popular sightings.

The leatherback sea turtle is the largest of all living turtles and is characterized by the absence of body shell. Instead its carapace is covered by skin and flesh. Leatherback sea turtles are known for the long distances they cover to get to their breeding grounds and trips of 1,000 or more kilometers are not uncommon.

The unconventional Mola or Sunfish is a highlight for many of our guests and we have had occasional sightings of equally impressive Leatherback Turtles.    Accompanying us throughout are a wreck of seabirds, such as the Kelp Gull, Hartlaub’s Gull, Pelicans and Cape Cormorant. These birds often use our catamarans to hitch a ride or do some tourist sightings of their own!

We hoist the sails of our four sailing catamarans whenever possible, switch off the engines and let our guests experience true sailing.  Guests can even help in setting the sails and rigging the lines.  On our three power catamarans we motor throughout.

Our journey from Pelican Point through the larger bay area we pass some of the more interesting ships and oil rigs that visit the bay. We take the opportunity to serve lunch. Our guests get to enjoy our local world-class fresh Namibian oysters paired with sparkling wine, and a variety of savoury snacks and dessert pastries.  In addition, we also serve local beer and soft drinks.

We return to the Waterfront at around 12h30.

What to wear?

It can be windy on the boat, warm clothes are recommended. Blankets will also be available on board.

Our experienced guides will be there to give you a guided tour in English, Afrikaans or German, assist to your needs on the trip and to answer any questions you might have.

What about seasickness?

Most of our tours are done in the morning, in the protected lagoon area, in order to avoid Walvis Bay's infamous wind!

Your safety comes first. All skippers and boats have licenses and is sea worthy. All skippers have first aid training and the vessel is packed with all first aid material, life jackets for adults and children.

It is in the north part of the Namib National Park, near Walvis Bay. This part of the reserve is yellow sand (different from the red sand in the south) You start driving through Walvis Bay where the houses are across the sea. Large flamingo flocs are resting in the shallow water. Their take off for flight or their "dancing" while looking for the food in the low seabed, was exiting. You drive through the red banks of the salt pools which is unique. Then you experience the challenging derive on the seashore where practically dunes kiss the sea. I did not expect much, initially upon my booking and felt it was a bit expensive, but I wanted to give my wife a new experience. In the end it was a truly marvelous experience. Although the charter is at times fully booked, you do get the sense that you still get your moneys worth. Apart from costs, the experience was amazing, we learned a couple of fun facts regarding the Walvis bay coast and it's marine life, even though we are locals to the country. Whilst on board you are treated to drinks and snacks including fresh oysters. Booking and dealing with the office was delightful and professional too. I am wholeheartedly able to recommend this tour to any person. Ask for Capt Leon, he was informative, entertaining and a great host. Perhaps a little too informative on the mating habit of the seals but there you go. He has a unique relationship with some of the wild seals who identify his boat and pay visit. In other words, the seals actually jump on the yacht from the stern and take a ride while Capt Leon feeds them the odd sardine or two. This gives you the opportunity to take a “seal-fy” sorry , not my joke. Thanks Captain.. Gulls and Cormorants are other birds always accompanying the boat on the cruise. The seal island is very much worth seeing. The boat serves snacks and lunch, but we sadly could not have oysters as the whole tray with them fell down due to the boat rocking! Sea sometimes tend to get rough, but that just adds to the fun! Had an amazing morning out with Sun Sail, as we set sail the seals and pelicans came on board and one of the guys bought us out Namibian shots to warm us up. The guy in charge was so informative and is clearly a genuine animal lover. And he has a really good sense of humour as well, we laughed so much from start to finish! For lunch we had the chance to try oysters and there was lots of other grazing bits also if you don't like oysters. The champagne was flowing, none of this just having one glass, he kept filling your glasses up. We were lucky enough to have dolphins following us for quite a bit.
