It’s was something very different from any other hotel

superyacht on thames

The stay was very good but I do feel the breakfast could do with improvement - the selection on the cold breakfast was limited.

The service was brilliant, very professional and couldn’t do enough for us , we were made to feel special .

We loved how clean the facility is and the location itself. The yacth is very gtand and authentically decorated. The location at the royal docks is quieter than central london but with enough near by including the o2 a cable car ride away and all the local restaurants along the quayside. The bar on board has a wide range of drinks. There are even Sunborn umbrellas to rent should the weather be wet. The staff are all very well mannered and helpful.

The service was exceptional in every way. Our cabin was beautiful, clean and spacious and the little extras provided for my daughters birthday made our stay.

Great hotel, with excellent staff that provide a warm welcome and outstanding service.

Beautiful lobby and staircase, large rooms with lounge area, friendly and helpful staff

Wi-Fi in one of the rooms is terrible, room 2025 , something needs to be done , I can’t even enjoy my own phone network from that room

Great location, great atmosphere. Comfortable bed and great breakfast.

Great location, transport links. Staff were friendly and helpful. Lovely breakfast selection. Great views from the bar.

Great location!

Parties and events are back on.

And for those looking to celebrate occasions in style, a brand new vessel will be offering exactly that very soon.

A new £25million ‘superyacht’ will be sailing onto the Thames in a matter of months.

Set to be London ’s largest floating venue, Oceandiva will pop up in August ready for an autumn launch.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

With room for up to 1,500 guests, the lavish 86-metre-long yacht will host dinners, receptions and product launches.

It will be stationed at the Royal Docks and attendees will be able to board at London Bridge, Canary Wharf, Greenwich, ExCel and Tower Bridge – depending on the event.

While there are no real pictures as of yet, mock-ups for the sleek boat show a matte grey barge with a Union Jack hanging from the top deck, as well as a large outdoor decking space – spread across two levels.

Oceandiva yacht

Oceandiva is a Dutch company that already has ships up and running in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. It says the London yacht will be a CO2-neutral venue, so it will be powered by lithium battery packs – backed up by mounted solar panels.

The team add that the venue will be perfect for extravagant weddings, private cocktail parties, milestone birthdays and cultural celebrations.

Yacht Charter River Thames

Guide to sailing on the river thames.

From the busy tidal estuary in Kent and Essex to the buzzing fun of Central London or the quieter reaches of the Upper Thames above Teddington Lock, a River Thames yacht charter is as different in terms of boating from end to end.

Build your own unique trip!

London itself has been a port of sorts since the dawn of civilsation. The Romans overwhelmed the Britons who often fought back with Queen Boudicca famously burning the city to the ground. Castles and Palaces line the river from the Tower of London to the seat of power Westminster Palace, Greenwich Palace (on the East/West Greenwich Meridian) and then further upriver, Hampton Court Palace and Royal Family's residence at Windsor Castle.

Beyond Britain's faded glory of old, the Thames is still one of the UK's most important waterways. Dozens of river and canals feed into it from the River Lea in the east to the Grand Union canal in the City that combined give it waterborne links to much of the South East and even the West Midlands. It is even possible to take a narrowboat all the way from the city to the Bristol Channel and the mighty River Severn in the west of England via the Kennet and Avon Canal that joins at Reading.

From partying into the night to hair raising speedboat rides, to a night or two on a Thames barge or just pottering through the quiet countryside in rural Oxfordshire, a River Thames yacht charter could mean any number of things. Let's explore these below.

Explore the River Thames By Renting A Boat

There are three effective zones on the Thames where you can explore the breadth and depth of Britain's most important river.

From the Thames Barrier to Teddington Lock, Central London is a boat charter zone where it is best to leave the sailing itself to a pro. That means you can enjoy a sightseeing cruise with the views and sounds of one of the world's greatest capitals that has been around since the dawn of civilisation without having to worry which arch you should be passing under and dealing with the rebounding boats' and ships' washes from the embankment in what can be tricky tidal currents!

Perhaps on a party boat with champagne flowing or on a luxury yacht charter in Central London you can concentrate on the fun to be had and enjoy the sights and sounds of one of the world's greatest capitals, embarking and disembarking on one of the Port of London's main pier embarkation and disembarkation points.

Teddington Lock to Reading can still be done in luxury and comfort, perhaps having your wedding reception afloat as you pass Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace, taking in relics of Britain's great past.

This section, past Marlow, Henley and on up to Oxford and the West of England may be considered the Upper Thames. From Teddington west the waterway depth is protected by the lock and this means that the amateur boatman or sailor can more competently take a bareboat cruiser charter upriver.

On lower stretches of the Upper Thames you can sail on a luxury yacht charter Thames barge for many miles of the Thames river. These are old wide beam cargo ships that take passengers and are comfortably fitted out throughout and offer very good hospitality. There are many opprtunities to hire a crewed boat or luxury yacht as a venue for a Christmas party or wedding reception - or just a post-lockdown disco cruise with your friends! Like the Central Londonparty boat charters we discussed above you can have 60 guests with you for an event that will remain in memory for a long time to come.

The third zone is the upper reaches of the Thames as well as the Kennet and Avon Canal where you can potter along the waterways on a narrowboat or luxury boat for a day or a week's boating holiday in a far less frenetic environment.

How To Get To the River Thames

One of the longest rivers in the UK, the Thames runs past some of the most important road, rail and air links in the country.

Tube: For a Central London party boat or dining cruise you can access a pier for the start of the cruise in locations including the Embankment and Pool of London. These are a short walk from the Tube.

The West London boroughs of Richmond and Teddington are both on the District Line of the Tube, with an Overground train station also at Richmond.

Rail: London's major railway stations connect to destinations all over the UK and via St Pancras to Europe via the Eurotunnel.

Road: Much of the Upper Thames lies on the M4 corridor with good road links to Reading, Windsor, Oxford, Marlowand Henley.

Marinas on the Thames River

As Britain's second longest river, the Thames has a large number of marinas, piers and docks that cater to everything from narrowboat, to motor yacht and even luxury yacht and party boat for everything from a private charter boatingholiday to a night of hedonism and fun.

Here are some highlights.

West London's Shepperton Marina has 400 berths catering to all sizes of yacht in four basins and provides easy access to the non-tidal river above Teddington Lock. From here you can start your boating holiday leaving London afloat instead of by other more traditional modes of transport.

A couple of miles from the M3/M25 interchange and close to Staines-on-Thames Penton Hook Marina is Britain's largest inland marina with 525 berths. For those looking for an inland waterway boating holiday that begins close to Central London, this is an ideal starting off point.

Further upriver you can start your Thames boat charter out of the 175 berth Windsor Marina that has all the facilities you need for to begin a perfect boat holiday.

Henley-on-Thames has Hambleden Marina and Henley Marina while Reading's Thames and Kennet Marina has narrowboat and even luxury boat holidays on which you can explore routes through Oxfordshire and even Wiltshire.

Suggested Sailing Routes on the River Thames

The Thames river was for many years both the gateway to the British Empire and an inland waterway link to cities as far afield as Bristol and even Worcester! What do you want from a River Thames yacht charter? Here we suggest a good option for a private boat hire on the Upper Thames but there are any number of other opportunities from a speedboat ride through Central London to a Christmas party or even getting married afloat with your wedding receptionaboard too.

Windsor - Reading - 7 Days: From the historic town of Windsor you can take your private charter or family charterboat up past the tows of Maidenhead and Marlow to the twee town of Henley-on-Thames, home of the famous rowing boat regatta. Reading at the mid-point of the cruise is a buzzing commuter town with a variety of top restaurants and excellent nightlife. For the next three days you return downriver.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht on the River Thames

The boating season runs from late April to mid September on the UK inland waterways, though you will see hardier types afloat throughout the year. Unlike the Solent, it never gets frantic on the water Upper Thames or Kennet & Avon Canal though it is a popular place for boat owners to keep their craft. A canal or riverboat charter can be done at any time through the year and you can expect a place to eat at a pub and a mooring without having to book too early or plan too far ahead.

Sailing Weather on the Thames River

April and May: Westerlies prevail but you will often find warm days with brisk sailing conditions of a F4-5. Gales will come through earlier in the year. This is Britain - expect rain!

June-August: In June there will be southerly and westerly gales at times but these tend to die out in July and August with the Azores High moving north and providing settled conditions and light easterlies. Expect temperatures in the high 20s C range with the odd few days at 30C plus. As ever, keep your oilies to hand as even in the height of summer things can change.

September-October: Grey skies and gales start to return. While often in the high teens Celsius in September with some great sailing conditions, the westerly procession of lows start coming up the English Channel and things can get a little uncomfortable by early October.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

There are dozens of marinas on the River Thames from Kent to Oxfordshire. Just outside of the M25 and near Staines-on-Thames is the largest inland marina in the UK, Penton Hook Marina with over 500 berths. Inside the M25 in West London is Shepperton Marina with 400 berths - both cater to everything from narrowboat to motor yacht to luxuryyacht private boat hire.

May to August is best for sailing, though it can get very busy. If you take a River Thames boat charter outside of these times it won't be as busy, though at the end of June and the first week of July the Royal Henley Regatta can be at least as busy as Cowes on the Solent at Cowes Week - another important high society event!

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

Unless you are experienced on the lower reaches of the River Thames around Central London it is wise to avoid sailingon the tidal reaches below Teddington Lock. This even applies to experienced sailors London is a busy port that has bylaws that are in addition to the Collision Regulations. On the Upper Thames navigation is a lot quieter and simpler - you only need basic training to sail safely.

If you want to sail on the lower Thames without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. On the upper Thames, for small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Londoners have been gazing in awe at a 'superyacht' that moored up near the iconic Tower Bridge, with some saying it's the "biggest boat" they've ever seen. The yacht reportedly turned up over the weekend, leaving Londoners wondering who owns it and what it's doing there. They were also keen to know the price tag.

Some found the yacht a little insensitive, considering that many people in London are struggling financially in the midst of the cost of living crisis. But as it so happens, the owner of the boat is no stranger to the capital.

Posting a picture of the boat on Reddit, one person wrote: "Seriously, this thing showed up this morning and is moored right by Tower Bridge. It's the biggest boat I have seen here, any idea who owns it?"

One person replied: "Sorry but not me as I can barely afford heating, so how the heck do you expect me to own a million dollar super boat?"

Turns out the boat, named 'Kismet', is owned by billionaire Shahid Khan, who also happens to own Fulham Football Club. Shahid bought the club from former owner Mohamed Al Fayed in 2013.

The Pakistani-American tycoon also owns NFL team the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars will be in town on October 30 to play against the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium, perhaps explaining why his boat is moored on the Thames.

The superyacht 'Kismet' is moored opposite Butler's Wharf, downstream on the river Thames from Tower Bridge and the capital's financial district's skyscrapers, on 20th October 2021, in London, England. 'Kismet' is a 95.2m (312 ft)-long superyacht which was built in 2014. It is managed by the Moran Yacht & Ship chartering business, and is owned by Pakistani-American billionaire Shahid Khan. 'Kismet' means "destiny" or "fate" in Khans native Urdu. (Photo by Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images)

The boat is said to currently be on sale for the cost of 169 million euros, or more than £140 million.

Not everyone was happy to see it docked in London. One said: "Waiting for Just Stop Oil to spray paint it as well. Would be brilliant." Another commented: "Think you should never show off such extravagance in a city with homeless people on the street."

Saying that, some Londoners claim they've seen better. "Gone are the Russian mega mega yachts, now come the toddlers," said one. "I mean, does this even have a helipad or two?"

Kismet, which means 'fate' or 'destiny' in Urdu, was built in 2014 and sails under the flag of Cayman Islands. It has its own swimming pool on board.

About River Thames

Why is River Thames a good sailing destination?

Sailing the River Thames in London is not just about the thrill of navigating its waters, but also about experiencing the city from a unique and unparalleled perspective. With Yachting.Rent, we unravel why the River Thames stands as one of the globe’s most distinctive sailing destinations.

Historical Canvas: The River Thames is a silent witness to London’s evolution, from its Roman origins to its status as a global metropolis. As you sail, you’re treading the pathways of history, passing by landmarks such as the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, and the Globe Theatre. Each bend of the river narrates a chapter of the city’s illustrious past, making every sail a journey through time.

Iconic Landmarks: Few waterways in the world offer the visual spectacle that the Thames does. The London Eye, Shard, and the O2 Arena are just a few of the modern marvels that punctuate the skyline. Coupled with historic bridges like Tower Bridge and the London Bridge, the panorama from the Thames is an ever-evolving masterpiece.

Cultural Vibrancy: London’s cultural heartbeat resonates along the Thames. The Southbank Centre, Tate Modern, and the National Theatre are cultural behemoths that dot the riverside. Sailing here means you’re at the nexus of global art, theatre, and music.

Riverside Revelry: The Thames is flanked by a plethora of pubs, eateries, and entertainment venues. Moor your yacht and step ashore to indulge in London’s celebrated culinary and nightlife scene.

Serene Escapes: Beyond the urban buzz, the Thames meanders through quieter, verdant stretches, offering moments of tranquility. The river’s upper reaches, with spots like Richmond and Henley, promise serene landscapes and a gentler pace – a perfect antidote to the city’s hustle.

Events Galore: The Thames is not just a passive waterway but a dynamic arena for events. The annual Boat Race, Thames Festival, and New Year’s Eve fireworks are spectacular events best experienced from the water.

Accessibility: With well-maintained marinas, docks, and facilities, the Thames is accessible for sailors of all levels. Yachting.Rent ensures smooth logistics, making your Thames sailing experience seamless and enjoyable.

In a world of generic sailing destinations, the River Thames stands out as an exhilarating blend of history, culture, and modernity. With Yachting.Rent, embark on an exceptional voyage that captures the essence of London, making you appreciate the city in a light you’ve never seen before.

Where in the world: Top superyacht locations this week

The global superyacht fleet is always on the move. Using BOAT Pro’s pioneering AIS fleet tracker , we keep an eye on the furthest flung superyachts of the week .

Nord in the Seychelles

The 142 metre Nord is undoubtedly one of the most notable launches of the past few years. She became Lürssen's biggest build to date when she hit the water in 2021 and has continued to turn heads with her sheer size, squared-off bow and striking duo-tone hull and superstructure. After a summer well spent cruising in the Mediterranean, Nord made her way to the Maldives in time for Christmas and is now sitting pretty in the Seychelles, anchored off from its capital Victoria.

Lusine in London

At 60 metres in length, the Heesen motor yacht Lusine is the largest steel superyacht to be built by Heesen and was spotted cruising into the mouth of the River Thames on February 14. She is one of a string of new European builds that have arrived in London in the past few months to be delivered. Lusine was built under the name Project Falcon and recently completed intensive sea trials in the North Sea, reaching a top speed of 17.7 knots.

La Datcha in Peru

The 77 metre polar expedition yacht La Datcha has made her way back up the South American coastline after spending the winter season doing what she does best - exploring the frozen fields of Antarctica. Equipped with an ice classed hull and helicopter, La Datcha has been to-ing and fro-ing between Ushuaia and Antarctica over the past few months but is now enjoying the warmer waters of Peru.

Arbema in Cuba

Arbema , previously known as Azteca , came under new ownership in 2021 in one of the biggest sales of the year. The 72 metre CRN superyacht was snapped up after just three months on the market and her new owner has naturally been spending the winter season cruising the Caribbean. She was most recently spotted pulling into Havana, Cuba.

Azamanta in Bermuda

The unmistakable bronze hull of the 55 metre Heesen Azamanta has been spotted pulling into port in Bermuda. She was delivered in 2015 as the first in the Dutch shipyard's 55 Steel series and has been under private ownership ever since. Azamanta 's cruising calendar is often dictated by the seasons - summers in the Mediterranean and winters in the Caribbean - but an ice-reinforced steel hull means she can travel wherever she pleases.

Londoners Force £25m Party Yacht on River Thames to Leave Town

Oceandiva London party yacht

In a story that surprisingly isn't from a waterfront American city like Miami or Los Angeles, citizens of London, England have rebelled against a 'party yacht' set to take up residence on the River Thames.

The Oceandiva London was built by VEKA Shipyards in the Netherlands for roughly £25 million (about $31 million USD) and is a carbon neutral vessel that its owners describe as a "floating venue." The Oceandiva is operated by SmartGroup , who describe themselves as a " dynamic collection of hospitality, catering, venue and event management businesses." The company caters and manages over 500 events per year and has hosted events for clients including Microsoft, Google, and Apple.

The Oceandiva London is 282 feet long (86 m) with a 56' beam (17 m) and is described as "a 2.2Mw battery powered CO2 neutral event vessel." It includes a plethora of green technology including battery-powered propulsion, an onboard sewage treatment plant to recycle wastewater, and an HVAC system that generates airflow for energy saving. It also has a backup biofuel generator. The vessel carries room onboard for up to 1000 guests.

But despite its progressive construction, it was denied an alcohol license in spring 2023 after a local outcry. According to Marine Industry News UK , organizers withdrew their application for a "3 am license," which permits late night events on the Thames, after receiving upwards of 980 complaints sent to the Newham Council.

The primary issue, according to locals, was the inevitable disruption from 1000 potentially inebriated guests entering and exiting the vessel at all hours. Because of its the urban moorage, locals claimed that accommodating the vessel would be harmful to the city. The Oceandiva was set to be moored at the Royal Docks in Newham, with stop-offs at six piers in Greenwich, Southwark, and Tower Hamlets.

“Whilst we acknowledge that this may feel like a victory for some local residents and riverside stakeholders, we are sure you can appreciate it is a sad day for the city and, indeed, Smart Group, as this carbon-neutral, cutting-edge vessel will no longer be redefining events on the River Thames. It is quite simply a missed opportunity for the city" Smart Group’s managing director Chloe Jackson wrote in a letter.

SmartGroup estimated that the Oceandiva would have generated around £77 million ($97 million USD) for the local economy. They also claimed that their unique events would have a positive impact on London’s nightlife and the environment. According to the company, the vessel would have been the first carbon-neutral vessel on the Thames.

Despite their efforts, the stigma around the Oceandiva never let up. The cause wasn't helped by another hiccup in June 2023 when the boat collided with the anchor chain of a moored barge during tests to evaluate its seaworthiness. The accident is still under investigation with to The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB).

The final decision to leave London was made by the Dutch owners and "comes after prolonged challenges in navigating the complex web of regulatory and certification processes in the U.K.,” SmartGroup wrote on its website.

According to the BBC , Rachel Bentley, a Liberal Democrat councillor for North Bermondsey, campaigned against the yacht's presence.

"A vessel the size of a football pitch is completely unsuitable for a narrow urban river," she told BBC .

"Residents of Shad Thames were rightly concerned about rowdy party-goers disembarking into their historic neighbourhoods all day and night."

The decision comes just a month after US company Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSG) also withdrew plans to build 21,000-capacity Las Vegas-style “Sphere” entertainment venue in East London. The MSG firm said it could not participate in a permitting process that was ‘merely a political football between rival parties.' The "Sphere" music venue was expected to cost upwards of £800milllion (nearly $1.1 billion USD) to build.

Despite the setback, the Oceandiva is likely headed to other parts of Europe where sister vessels are already in operation. The company has similar operations ongoing in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Dusseldorf, Germany, where partygoers can organize events for everything from on-water club nights to corporate retreats.

The unspoken rules about how to behave on a superyacht

  • The superyachting world is very small, with only 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea.
  • That insularity has bred a specific etiquette, which is often hard for outsiders to know about.
  • These are the de facto rules of the most expensive billionaire toys, superyachts .

Insider Today

For the owners of superyachts , privacy is often the most valuable thing money can buy. It's one reason centimillionaires and billionaires pay eight or nine figures for a palace at sea, far from the prying eyes of land dwellers.

Even the most gossipy crew members should stay tight-lipped about the name of a former owner or charter guest, and many brokers shy away from answering benign questions.

That means that, aside from basic safety guidelines, most of the rules of superyachting are unwritten. The very few who need to know them — there are only about 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea, according to SuperYacht Times — already know them.

But if you do happen to be a lucky guest at a party on a billionaire's $500 million ship or find yourself included in a $1 million-a-week vacation, there are a few things you need to know.

After four days of touring superyachts that sell for as much as $75 million and chatting with the people who buy, sell, and work on them at the Palm Beach International Boat Show , Business Insider gleaned a few key edicts. Given the discreet nature of the industry, almost all the people we spoke with requested anonymity to protect their working relationships, but here's what they had to say.

Take off your shoes

While it's a basic rule for anyone in boating, it may come as a surprise to an outsider that no matter how rich you are or how expensive your heels are, in the vast majority of cases, you can't wear shoes on board.

It's partly for safety — you don't want anyone slipping on a wet deck — but partly to keep the yacht clean. So expect to see barefoot billionaires, and if you forgot to get a pedicure, bring a set of special boat shoes.

Don't make any assumptions about money — but know the signs

In the superyacht world, it's safe to assume almost everyone you meet is very, very rich, and many brokers and builders say you can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to prospective clients.

"It has nothing to do with how they're dressed," one broker told BI. "It's the biggest mistake you can make because a complete slobby-looking guy or couple could be a multibillionaire."

There are, however, a few clues. Watches are one; new footwear is another.

"Rich people always have new shoes," a superyacht expert said. But because of the shoe rule mentioned above, this tip probably applies only when they're on land.

Book your massage early

Wellness areas, including spa rooms with a massage bed or two and a professional-grade facial machine, are becoming must-haves on superyachts . Most have a customized spa menu and a crew member who doubles as a trained masseuse or beautician — and they're usually in high demand.

One captain said he'd implemented a booking system to ensure people weren't fighting for the same spots. A broker said sometimes masseuses would be so busy they wouldn't leave the small spa cabin for hours on end.

So if you want to make the most of your relaxing time on board, reserve your pampering slot as soon as you get your welcome cocktail.

Pirates are more real than you'd think, and many superyachts have hidden safe rooms

While you might dress up as a fake pirate for an onboard theme party, there are very real ones — and other dangers — on the high seas.

In certain areas, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, pirates are a cause of concern . In the Red Sea, owners are concerned about the Houthis .

Superyachts can come equipped with sonic weaponry, lockdown systems, and anti-drone protection. Builders are even designing safe rooms — which are apparently just as plush as the rest of the ship.

The longer the boat, the closer to $1 billion

While you can't judge a buyer based on appearances, you can judge them on the length of their boat.

One rule of thumb: If someone has a brand-new 50-meter vessel, chances are they have $1 billion to their name. If it's over 100 meters, expect the owner to have at least $2 billion. And for a boat bigger than that — like Jeff Bezos' 127-meter megayacht Koru — it takes many, many billions.

Money can't buy you everything

The world's biggest, most expensive yachts are custom-built by shipyards that produce only a handful of boats a year.

But no matter how many tens of millions of dollars clients are spending, there are things to which builders will refuse to say yes.

"In the end, the boat has our name," an executive from one of the world's biggest shipyards told BI.

They recalled a client who requested a yellow hull to match his Lamborghini . The shipyard declined, steering the client in another direction.

"If I don't like it, I don't build it. I finalize two or three contracts a year," another builder said. "If somebody can say your vessel is ugly, my reputation is bad."

Yacht crews are trained to make the impossible possible. A guest requests fresh caviar flown into the middle of the Caribbean? No problem. Fresh flowers every day while at sea? It'll cost you, but it can be done.

But they can't time travel, and captains and crew members say the thing that causes the most friction is when a client or owner wants to go from point A to point B — right now.

"The hardest request is when they want the boat in a place — yesterday," one captain said.

The best person to know? A friend with a superyacht

Superyachts are expensive to build and expensive to maintain . According to the industry standard, owning a superyacht will cost 10% of its new-build price annually. For a $100 million yacht, that's at least $10 million yearly going to crew, regular maintenance, insurance, fuel, and dockage.

Chartering, too, is costly . Beyond the list price, which can be hundreds of thousands a week, guests must pay for provisions, which are pegged at 35% of the charter fee, and are expected to tip between 10% and 20%.

So the most important unspoken rule of superyachting is actually that the only thing better than owning a superyacht is knowing someone else who does — and invites you along, of course.
