Instead, if you are in the Bahamas it is worth noting that there are around 365 cays as well as breathtaking views such as the Tropic of Cancer Beach! If you are going to the Bahamas you may want to stop at Freeport in Grand Bahama and Shop at Port Lucaya Marketplace! This is a shopper's paradise with an open-air facility and white sandy beaches within walking distance for everyone to enjoy.
What are the most popular brands for a yacht charter?
Nautal´s boat owners offer a range of different yacht brands and models to rent. The three well-known yacht brands Nautal offers are Jeanneau, Beneteau, and Bavaria. Moreover, other brands include Silverton, Mangusta, Pershing, Baglietto, and more!
It is important to note however that most yachts are chosen for their quality and high spec conditions which make them so unique.
What should I consider when chartering a yacht?
You should first consider how long you want to charter a yacht for, the size, and what activities you and your group may enjoy doing. When renting a boat of this type, the size of the yacht is very important since this will determine how long the yacht charter can be. Most 25-meter (82 ft) yachts are chartered on a weekly basis. Shorter private charters are only available in last-minute bookings, or for smaller yachts that do offer daily charter rates. You can also charter yachts with a captain and crew, who take care of every detail to make your holiday an unforgettable experience. Crewed charter yachts allow you and your family or friends to fully enjoy and relax with your dream boat vacation. Check with the owner if the captain and crew are included in the yacht charter prices!
How much does a yacht rental cost?
Yacht rental prices vary depending on your luxury yacht charter choice. Features that make the price vary are the season, size of the yacht, manufacturer, and more! A yacht charter in the low season can cost anywhere from $1,500 a day and $10,000 per week. In high season yacht rental costs from $1,800 per day and $12,487 per week. The price will increase the more luxurious and extravagant you choose your yacht rental to be. For example, megayachts over 165 ft can cost $500,000 or more per week. A yacht charter cost can also have additional and inclusive rates. Depending on the owner´s boat rental offer, the skipper and crew can be included or be an additional cost. Just imagine your luxury yacht charter with delicious food and drinks for your whole family to enjoy. Each charter experience is different so speak to the owner of the boat for more information on what is included in the price and what type of yacht you are looking for.
Where to rent a yacht?
Nautal charters yachts all around the world with many options available on the Amalfi Coast, Mykonos , Costa Azul, Porto Cervo, and beautiful Ibiza . You can also charter a yacht in the Caribbean, Croatia , or Greece . You can spend your vacation on a yacht, celebrate your birthday, organize a party, and more! Check out our different yacht charter destinations!
What does a yacht charter rate include and what additional fees can I expect to pay?
For one-week megayacht charters, the price is usually given without Taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination and will vary if more than one country is visited. You will also need to pay for an estimated running of expenses paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA. Expenses include fuel (the largest cost in yacht rentals), food and beverages, port fees, etc. APA typically accounts for between 25% and 35% of the charter price, and with it, the captain will pay all holiday expenses. Whatever is not used will be returned to the customer after the charter. Finally, you will need to consider the tip for the crew, which is a percentage of the rental price, approximately 10% in Europe and 15% in the US. This is highly recommended since a professional and trained crew has a direct impact on the success of the holidays.
Do I need a license to charter a yacht?
If you want to be the one who sails the yacht, you will need the Yachtmaster Ocean license or the equivalent, depending on the country. However, if you want to sail in luxury and comfort you can charter the yacht with a captain and crew. On the Nautal platform, yachts over 50 ft are chartered with a captain, except for some yacht charters located in Croatia. This is because the yachts are very expensive and the risk of damage for the owner is very high. Also during the high season, the yacht owners often cannot get them repaired easily without an advanced booking.

To make it a little bit easier, we have compiled a list of some of the best places to visit:
Mainland (Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, plus neighbouring Tivat and Montenegro) Best for : UNESCO-listed scenery, sightseeing tours, Roman palaces, monasteries, upscale restaurants, cultural landmarks and vibrant nightlife
Dalmatian Islands (Hvar, Pakleni Islands, Mljet, Trogir, Vis, Korčula, Brač) Best for : Picturesque harbours, secluded coves and golden beaches, crystal clear waters, lush National parks, historic monuments, scuba diving, windsurfing, watersports, hiking, wine tasting and olive groves
Far North - Istria Region (Pula, Kornati Archipelago) Best for : Sandy beaches, sheltered waters, variety of anchorages, museums, Roman ruins, swimming and snorkelling
Dalmatia Region
This is one of the most popular regions for yacht charters in Croatia. Located on the southern coast, its made up of 233 miles of coastline, islands, and reefs, and includes the must-see historic towns of Split and Dubrovnik , as well as hundreds of stunning verdant islands and national parks.
Croatia's second-largest city – its "crown jewel', Split has a history dating back to the 4th century. It is also home to the beautiful Roman Diocletian's Palace , a top recommended destination for your tour.
Split also boasts some of Croatia's largest marinas, and is within shooting distance of the celebrated islands of Korčula , Hvar , Vis, and Brač . Visit the world-famous Zlatni Rat beach on Brač's southern side, or sample the vibrant nightlife and clubbing scene on Hvar, which also plays host to several regattas over the summer season. Further south is Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site of huge architectural prominence.
Istria Region
Located in the north of Croatia, this region has a distinctly Italian feel to it, and has plenty of fantastic places to visit. Pula, the region's capital, is crammed with museums, which isn't surprising given its history that dates back to 3,000BC.
Across the water, lies the Brijuni National Park , a group of 14 small picturesque islands easily accesible from the mainland. Slightly to the north, the beautiful old fishing port of Rovinj is also well-worth a visit, with its steep cobbled streets and charming piazzas.
Travel south to historic Zadar , where you can enjoy a quiet walk along marbled streets and pine-scented beaches. Further south you will find the Kornati archipelago , a group of 100 or so relatively barren islands and reefs which are perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
Croatia’s stunning coastline and idyllic verdant islands have made it one of the most popular regions for Mediterranean yacht charters . To truly experience the magic of this country, here are our tips on the places you must check out when you charter a yacht in Croatia.
Don't Miss:
- Game of Thrones tour - through parts of Old Town, Dubrovnik where some of the most memorable scenes were filmed.
- Dubrovnik Summer Festival - see dramas, plays, classical music concerts and much more.
- 360˚ Dubrovnik - Michelin-starred restaurant built into the walls of the old town, with exquisite views over the harbour.
- Diocletian’s Palace - UNESCO site within the walls of Split’s historic and thriving town.
- Franciscan Monastery - Visit Hvar’s 15th-century monastery and museum that overlooks a shady cove, and meander charming gardens that feature a 300-year old cypress tree.
- Plitvice Lakes National Park - one of the oldest and largest national parks in Croatia.
- Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) - located on the southern coast of Brač, regularly listed as one of the top beaches in Europe.
- Blue Grotto, Bisevo - situated in the central Dalmatian archipelago, this waterlogged sea cave has an intriguing glowing blue light that appears at certain times of the day.
- Pula Arena - one of the world’s six largest Roman amphitheatres, and certainly it’s most well-preserved.
- Visovac Monastery - situated on a tiny island in the Krka National Park.
- Mljet National Park tour - takes guests to the area of the first protected ecosystem in the Adriatic.
Avid island-hoppers seeking solitude love a Croatia yacht charter itinerary. Of approximately 1,185 islands just 66 are inhabited, making the unfettered beauty of its isles, inlets and bays ripe for exploration. Among these wonderful islands to explore are the verdant gems of Hvar , Vis, Korčula , and Brač.
But yacht rentals in Croatia are also ideal for guests seeking impressive designer shopping, exquisite wineries and glittering nightlife in its main cities.
Culminating from Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, Christian, and Austrian empires all competing for Croatia’s ownership, Croatia is home to an astoundingly rich cultural heritage. This makes for a fabulous yacht charter: from the Venetian palaces and designer boutiques of the jet-set haven of Hvar; to the Benedictine beauty of the UNESCO-listed walled city of Dubrovnik; to the Italian infused architecture and cosmopolitan ambiance of Pula and beyond.
As one of the most popular destinations for yacht charters in the East Mediterranean , there should be plenty to choose from when it comes to luxury yachts for charter in Croatia. If you’re unsure about whether you want to book a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Croatian getaway, there are a few things you should consider first.
Motor Yacht Charters in Croatia
Whether you are interested in a small or large motor yacht, or somewhere in between, you should find a Croatia luxury charter that will more than meet your expectations. With a luxury motor yacht you can truly relax; soaking up the stunning scenery, or scuba diving reefs and wrecks under clear aqua waters, or taking a tender ashore to explore ancient Roman palaces and monasteries, as well as sampling the local cuisine and wines.
You should note that berth/slip options in Croatia for larger yachts (over 50m) are limited, however, with plenty of safe and tranquil anchorage spots to choose from amongst the numerous islands, islets, and reefs around this Adriatic hotspot you will be spoilt for choice.
Sailing Yacht Charters in Croatia
The Adriatic enjoys an average of 315 cloudless days a year, and with winds in Croatia generally around 10-20 knots, this can make chartering a sailing yacht a great option to explore the picturesque islands and secluded beaches at your leisure. The winds do tend to get stronger in the fall, so bear this in mind when booking your charter.
There should be ample sailing yachts, gulets (traditional wooden yachts), and catamarans for charter in Croatia, but we do recommend booking early to secure your perfect yacht and desired itinerary.
Gulet Charters in Croatia
Gulets are traditional wooden boats originating from Turkey , but are now widely available throughout Croatia and Greece . These types of boats offer a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht, for those wishing to spend a bit less but still enjoy a fabulous yacht charter in the Mediterranean .
With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget in Croatia. The average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in Croatia are as follows;
- For motor yacht rentals in Croatia, prices can range from $32,000 to $1,8m per week plus expenses
- For luxury sailing yacht rentals in Croatia, prices can go from $32,363 to $582,882 weekly plus expenses
The optimal times for yacht charters in Croatia’s sapphire-hued waters span from May till October. During this time, you can benefit from calmer seas, reliably clement weather, and warm swimming temperatures. Croatia’s peak season is July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and packed marinas in these months.
related articles
There are a variety of options, although most yachts charters tend to begin in Dubrovnik or Split in the Dalmatia region, both of which have major international transport links. Another popular option is to set off from Italy or Montenegro and then cruise the Adriatic down towards the Kornati a rchipelago or along the Dalmatia region – encompassing 233 miles of coastline stretching from Krk to Lastovo .
Croatia has numerous must-see destinations and you will be hard-pushed to fit them all in. For itineraries along the southern Dalmatian coast, some yachts may spend a day in port in Dubrovnik – ‘the pearl of the Adriatic’ – before setting off for the picturesque surrounding archipelagos, which include the popular island destinations of Hvar , Mljet, Vis, and Brač . You can either finish your yacht charter back in Dubrovnik or continue on to finish up in Split – the cultural and economic center of Dalmatia.
For yacht charters in the north of Croatia, many like to begin in Venice or Bari, located in Italy’s Puglia (or Apulia) region, before crossing the Adriatic to Croatia's Istria region. From here you can explore the popular island of Pula , with its world-class Roman amphitheater, before cruising down towards Zadar and the Kornati National Park .
Alternatively, you can begin in Porto Montenegro – only an hour’s drive from Dubrovnik – although you may have to cover the cost of repositioning as many luxury charter yachts in Croatia are based in Split.
It’s simple enough to begin your superyacht vacation in a neighboring country before heading to Croatia. For more advice please speak to your yacht charter broker .
sample itineraries
We recommend finishing your luxury charter in Split, Croatia's second-largest city and one of the most popular superyacht hotspots on the Adriatic. Renowned for its pristine beaches and crystalline waters, plus with a vibrant mix of things to see and do, you'll be in for a treat.
There are hundreds of harbors, marinas, and ports in Croatia, so whether stopping off in Dubrovnik or sailing to the far side of the Lastovo Archipelago National Park there are sure to be facilities or an anchorage to suit your needs.
There are 56 official marinas along the Croatian coast from Umag to Dubrovnik. Some of out top picks include;
- ACI Marina Dubrovnik – located within a short distance to Dubrovnik’s historic old town. It has 380 slips and can accommodate yachts up to 60m/196ft. For larger yachts, or yachts not requiring a slip, another popular option is to utilize the international cruise ship terminal quay, which is happy to facilitate yacht charter pick-ups and drop-offs.
- ACI Marina Korčula – ideal for a stop off at one of the many island destinations on your yacht charter, we recommend this sheltered marine, which accommodates yachts up to a maximum LOA of 40m/131ft.
- Lumbarda Marina – also on Korčula this marina has slips catering to yachts up to a max length of 25m/82ft.
- ACI Marina Vrboska – located in the celebrated islnad of Hvar, this marina offers berths for yachts up to a max length of 30m/98ft.
- Cavtat Marina – If you're struggling to find a slip in the summer, we recommend this marina, which is located to the south of Dubrovnik and enjoys good shelter from all winds. It offers 119 slips for yachts up to a max LOA of 60m/197ft.
Some of the best ports in Croatia are also located in the Istria region in northern Croatia. We recommend;
- D-Marin Dalmacija – located a few kilometers south of the ancient city of Zadar, which is the largest marina in Croatia with 1,200 berths and can accommodate yachts up to 80m LOA.
- ACI Marina Rovinj – catering for yachts with a LOA of up to 25m/82ft
- Marina Funtana – max length 20m/65ft.
For larger berths in the Split-Dalmatia region:
- ACI Marina Split – located in the heart of Croatia's "jewel" this marina has recently been modernised, offering great shopping, dining, fuelling and repair services to name but a few, alongside 318 protected berths that can accommodate superyachts up to 90m LOA.
- Marina Kastela – just 7km up the coast from Split – which can accommodate superyachts of up 150m/492ft in length, with a draft of 8m.
- D-Marin Mandalina – located in the city of Šibenik, situated between two National Parks within a protected lagoon, this marina boasts 429 slips, and has also been specially developed to accommodate yachts of up to 140m/459ft LOA.
With its rich cultural and architectural history, along with lush national parks and secluded beaches, Croatia is fast becoming one of our most popular destinations. Therefore, we advise you to book your yacht charter well in advance of your trip to secure your perfect yacht on your preferred dates.
If you leave it too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced and you may not be able to explore the destinations you have your heart set on. Plus, finding dates when everyone in your charter party is available can be tricky; the longer you leave it, the more challenging it will be.
Your yacht charter broker will also need plenty of time to tailor an itinerary to suit you, and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in marinas. We recommend booking up to 3 months in advance to give your broker the optimum time to organise everything down to the last detail.

Croatia Yacht Charter Q&A
Some important things to consider before booking your yacht;
- Yachts tend to spend more time at anchor in Croatia, so you need to consider that when choosing your perfect yacht. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard.
- Avoid heading into Dubrovnik when the big cruise ships are in town, these vessels can hold some 3,000 passengers and the town can become uncomfortably crowded.
- You should also be aware that certain zones in Croatia's waters forbid fishing or diving, or require special permissions to do so. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.
There should be a wide selection of yachts to choose from, so there is sure to be something that suits both you and your budget.
Croatian Gulets, traditional wooden yachts with wide beams that offer spacious deck areas and generous accommodation, are a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht. Gulets are available to charter for around €13,500-€15,000 per week, which usually includes food and up to 4 hours cruising per day.
Gulets are also perfect for family charters, or those who simply enjoy spending their time out on deck soaking up the beautiful surroundings of this stunning region.
Why not visit our yacht charter fleet page for a comprehensive look at all yachts available for charter around Croatia.
Alternatively, you can reach out to your preferred yacht broker , who will be sure to help you find your perfect yacht and itinerary around the dates that suit both you and your guests.
The perfect time for yacht charters in Croatia is between May to October, with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s, calm sapphire seas and endless days of glorious sunshine.
You should note that Croatia's peak season is in July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and crowded marinas during these months.
Most charters tend to begin in the beautiful historic towns of Dubrovnik or Split before continuing on to the celebrated islands of Hvar, Mljet, Vis and Brač. Alternatively, you can begin in Montenegro in the south, but you should note there may be additional re-positioning fees to pay as most yachts are based out of Split.
Another option is to begin your yacht charter in Venice, Italy then cross the Adriatic to Croatia's breathtaking northern region before cruising down the coast to Zadar or Split.
Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.
For more information about the costs of chartering a yacht, please read our helpful guide: Yacht Charter Costs Explained , which describes the fee structure in more detail.

What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail
Embarking on a yachting adventure but uncertain about your vessel of choice? Yachting.Rent is here to guide you through the decision. Let’s delve into the unique characteristics of sailing boats and catamarans, and discover which one aligns with your yachting aspirations.
Sailing boats, traditionally single-hulled, offer a classic yachting experience. They require skill to navigate but reward with an unrivaled sense of adventure and a closer connection to the sea. They’re ideal for thrill-seekers and those who love a hands-on approach to sailing.
On the other hand, catamarans, with their dual-hulled design, provide stability, ample space, and comfort. They’re an excellent choice for those desiring a leisurely, relaxed cruising experience with family and friends. Catamarans offer large lounging areas, spacious cabins, and are generally more stable in water, ensuring a smooth sailing experience.
At Yachting.Rent, we offer a vast fleet of both sailing boats and catamarans available for rent, ensuring we cater to all kinds of sea adventurers. Our yacht charter service provides you with the flexibility and choice to find a boat that best suits your sailing preferences and needs.
Whether you’re an experienced sailor seeking the thrill of mastering a sailing boat, or you prefer the stability and comfort of a catamaran for a luxurious voyage, we’ve got you covered.
With Yachting.Rent, your yachting adventure is tailored to your unique desires. Let us help you make the right choice and ensure your journey on the open seas is unforgettable. Embark on your dream yacht charter with us today!

Renting a Boat for the Holidays | 5 Tips

The holiday season is fast approaching. Even though it’s not Halloween, stores are putting Christmas items on the shelves. Now is a great time to make your holiday plans, and a holiday yacht charter may be just the unique adventure you deserve. Below, we’ve outlined 5 tips for renting a boat for the holidays.
Picture this: a gentle breeze ruffles your hair as you sip champagne on the deck of your crewed yacht, the sun painting the turquoise water. It is your perfect day on the water, every detail tailored to your whim, all because you chose the right type of boat for your bespoke boating vacation.
Our yacht charter experts will help you with every aspect of your vacation. Now, let’s take a look at 5 tips for renting a boat for the holidays.
1. Get to Know the Top Destinations for Renting a Boat for Holidays
Some of the top holiday destinations to rent a boat are the following:
The Caribbean
The Caribbean celebrates Christmas with a lot of partying and festivity. Each island is unique, but their shared history weaves them together. Christmas is a vibrant blend of African beats and European carols.
The Bahamas
The Bahamas celebrate Junkanoo, a carnival featuring bands dressed in colorful costumes, singing and dancing.
The British Virgin Islands
Like most British or former British Territories, the Christmas celebrations begin with festive decorations and parties from mid-December or earlier. Families prepare traditional foods and drinks such as Guava berry drinks, made from guava berry fruit, and black cake, similar to a fruit cake.
United States Virgin Islands
During the Crucian Christmas Festival , discover the rich heritage and culture of St. Croix. Locals celebrate the festival, which dates back to 1954, between December and January.
Balearic Islands
Soak up sunshine, sip mulled wine at candlelit markets, and dance under starry skies in Spain’s Balearic Islands.
New England Renting a Boat for the Holidays in Summer
Rent a yacht and experience the New England destinations of Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island, Newport, and Maine during the summer holidays. Especially over July 4th or Charter a Yacht in the fall or Labor Day.
2. Be Specific When Renting a Boat for the Holidays
Before you embark on your journey, you will fill out a Preference Sheet for everyone in your group. You’ll want to be as specific as possible. Include things like food likes and dislikes, what type of activities you want to do while on board, and any other special requests you might have.
3. Unplug as Soon as You Step Aboard
Let’s face it; we’re all overly connected these days. Whether you’re a student, executive, or parent, we always look at a screen. Disconnecting allows you to:
- be fully present at the moment and enjoy your surroundings and loved ones.
- disconnect from work and relax.
- connect with others without distractions.
- improve your mental health.
- boost your creativity.
- increase your productivity when you return to work.
Of course, most charter yachts have Bluetooth entertainment systems for music and movies if you must get in touch with the world. The communication equipment is up to date, including radar, satellite phones, cell phones, and radios.
4. Play in and on the Water
One of the best parts about renting a boat for the holidays is using all the fantastic water toys that come with it. Water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing are all great ways to get out and enjoy the water. If you’re looking for a more relaxing activity, try paddle boarding or kayaking.
Your crew is well trained in safety will ensure you have proper equipment such as life jackets.
5. Discover Something New When Renting a Boat for the Holidays
Your boating trip is a great time to mix things up and try something new.
- Try a new twist on a holiday favorite. Instead of the usual turkey and stuffing for your Christmas Day feast, your private chef might create a twist on traditional favorites.
- Build a snowman out of the sand.
- Switch up your workout routine. Standup paddleboarding, swimming or taking a long walk on the beach sure beat a boring run on a treadmill.
- Learn a new language. Maybe there isn’t enough time to become fluent. However, you can learn key phrases and practice them while in town.
Allow CKIM Group to be your boat rental company. Your experienced broker books your boat and takes care of all of your travel arrangements.

Tenant Background Checks and Your Rights
Are you looking for a new place to live or about to renew your lease? If so, you may want to know that a landlord, property manager, or other housing provider may ask a tenant background check company — also called a tenant screening company — to put together a report about you and other members of your household. That’s called a tenant background check, resident screening report, or tenant screening report. Landlords often use these reports to decide whether to rent to you. This article includes information about tenant background checks and your rights related to them.
You can get help if you believe that a background check company or landlord has violated your rights. For example, you can contact a local fair housing organization , state attorney general, local legal aid or legal services office , or other local lawyer .
You can complain to the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) and submit a report to the Department of Justice (DOJ) if you think a landlord or tenant background check company illegally discriminated against you. You can also complain to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) , if you think a background check company included errors in your background check or if a landlord did not provide required information about the tenant background check company.
You can find information in this article about
What To Know Before You Apply
If the landlord makes a negative decision, other steps to take, your rights to be free from discrimination.
- Where To Get Help
Additional Information
When filling out an application with a tenant background check requirement, take the following steps to decrease the likelihood of errors and protect your rights:
- Give the landlord your full name — first, middle (if you have one), and last — and date of birth. This helps the background check company get information about the right person. The landlord will probably also ask for your Social Security number, prior addresses, and possibly other information as well.
- Know whether you’ll pay a fee. The landlords for most HUD-subsidized housing (including public housing and project-based Section 8, Section 202, and Section 811 housing) are not allowed to charge you a fee for an application or background check. But most other landlords, including those accepting Section 8 housing choice vouchers, can — and usually do — charge you a fee.
Before you pay an application or background check fee, ask what information the landlord uses to decide whether to rent to you. The information that landlords might review as part of a tenant background check includes
- your name, Social Security number, date of birth, and current and past addresses
- your work and income history
- the status of your credit cards and other accounts, including payment history
- housing court records, for example, records related to eviction actions
- criminal records, including arrest, charge, and conviction records
- missed rent or other rent-related payments
- whether you’ve filed for bankruptcy or have been sued (whether or not the lawsuit is related to housing)
The tenant background check company might develop and share with the landlord a recommendation or score that they claim will predict what kind of tenant you will be (such as whether you will pay your rent or damage the property).
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, tenant background check companies cannot report most negative information — for example, most civil lawsuits and judgments, including housing court cases, and arrest records — after seven years. Bankruptcies can be reported for 10 years. However, there is no time limit for criminal convictions. Other laws, including the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and state or local laws, may have more restrictions on what tenant background check companies can report. FHA restrictions are described in more detail later.
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, tenant background check companies are required to take reasonable steps to ensure the information in your report is accurate. Common errors may include
- information that belongs to someone else
- incomplete information, such as how civil or criminal cases or eviction actions were resolved
- duplicate information, such as the same criminal record appearing more than once, suggesting they are separate cases
- outdated information, such as information that is legally too old to be included in a background check
- criminal record or eviction information that was sealed or expunged
A landlord might use a background check, a score, or a recommendation from the background check company to make a negative decision, including
- reject your application
- charge you more for rent
- require you to have a co-signer
- demand you pay a larger security deposit
But you have rights if a landlord makes a negative decision about your application because of something a tenant background check company included in a report. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to
- give you the name, address, and phone number of the tenant background check company
- tell you about your rights to dispute inaccurate information and to get a free copy of the report from the background check company if you ask for it within 60 days of the landlord’s notice to you
If they give you the notice orally, ask them if they would be willing to get you a written copy for your records.
Local law may give you more rights related to this type of notice. For example, your city may require that the landlord give you the notice in writing and may require that the landlord include in the notice the specific reason why you were rejected and a summary of the information from the tenant background check company that the landlord relied on.
- Get a copy of the tenant background check. You can ask the landlord if they would be willing to share the tenant background check report with you. But even if the landlord refuses, the background check company must give you a free copy of the report if you request it within 60 days of the adverse action notice. You may not see any score in the report you get from the tenant background check company, but the report must include the information any score or recommendation is based on.
- Dispute any errors on your report. To fix any errors, contact the background check company and tell them about the errors. Provide copies of any supporting documentation you have with your request. For example, if your report has an error in your criminal history or records from when you were evicted or sued over a housing or other issue, gather any paperwork showing how the action was resolved and provide it as part of your dispute. Let the landlord know about your dispute. For more information, check out Disputing Errors on Your Tenant Background Check Report .
- Tenant background check companies must investigate your dispute within 30 days. The background check company must also tell you the results of the investigation in writing. If the company makes a correction to your report, give the landlord an updated report or ask the background check company to send it to the landlord.
Errors by tenant background check companies can hurt your chances to secure housing. Take the following steps before applying for housing:
- Check your credit report . Get your free credit report and fix any errors . To get your annual free credit report from the three major credit bureaus, visit AnnualCreditReport.com or call 1-877-322-8228. You don’t have to buy anything or pay to fix errors. And if you have negative but correct information on your credit report, start working to fix your credit with steps you can take yourself — without paying anyone.
- If the court records look wrong or incomplete, you may be able to contact the court and get the court to correct any issues.
- You may be able to get your previous landlord to submit updated or correct information to the court along with a request to the court to update or correct its records. Making this request to the landlord in writing may increase the chances of getting cooperation from your landlord.
- You may want legal assistance to help you clean up your record. Some courts have local self-help centers that can help you. If your local court does not have a self-help center, speak with a local lawyer to discuss your options for correcting or updating information about unpaid rent, rent disputes, or evictions. Law Help is a program of Pro Bono Net , a national nonprofit to help people without lawyers understand their rights and connect to help in their local community. Check their directory of free or lower cost legal help in your state.
- Seal your records if possible . Check to see if your city or state lets people with criminal or housing court records seal or expunge them (expunging is a way to remove court case information from law enforcement or public records).
In some instances, tenant background checks can lead to illegal discrimination, even if there is no factual error in the report. The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal for tenant background check companies and landlords to discriminate against you because of race, national origin, color, sex (which includes gender identity and sexual orientation), religion, disability, or familial status (which includes persons who have children under 18, who are in the process of obtaining legal custody of children under 18, or who are pregnant).
A landlord cannot reject your application or treat you differently than other applicants or tenants because of any of these characteristics. For example, if you are Black and get rejected based on your criminal record, but a white applicant with a similar criminal record is accepted, the landlord may be violating your rights under the Fair Housing Act because of race. As another example, if at first the landlord says they do not perform credit checks, but after the landlord learns you are gay, you are told a credit check is required, the landlord may be violating your rights under the Fair Housing Act because of sex.
- A tenant background check company’s or landlord’s action can also be illegal if it uses or encourages the use of irrelevant or unnecessary information to deny you housing, and this negatively affects some groups more than others. This may be discrimination even if the tenant background check company or landlord does not intend to discriminate. You can learn more about how the Fair Housing Act applies to the use of criminal history here .
- The FHA also requires that landlords make reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. A reasonable accommodation is a change, exception, or adjustment to a rule, policy, practice, or service if that accommodation may be necessary for a person with a disability to have an equal opportunity to use and enjoy housing. A landlord’s tenant background check policy that fails to consider a person’s disability or provide a reasonable accommodation may, in some instances, violate the FHA or other civil rights laws.
In addition to the FHA, other federal laws help ensure equal access to housing, services, and activities. They include
- The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) , which prohibits disability-based discrimination in, among other things, access to and use of government activities, programs, and services and access to and use of places of public accommodation (public places and businesses open to the public, such as rental offices, restaurants, hotels, museums, libraries, and parks),
- Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act , which prohibits disability-based discrimination by a federal agency or any organization that gets federal financial assistance,
- Title VI of the Civil Rights Act , which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin by any organization that gets financial assistance from any federal agency, and
- Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) , which prohibits discrimination against individuals applying for or living in federally subsidized housing because they are or have been victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
Where To Get Help
To correct a tenant background report
You can get additional help if a background check company does not follow the law by responding to your dispute or correcting false information. For example, you can
- Get legal help . Contact your state attorney general, local legal aid or legal services office , or other local lawyer . If you are a servicemember , you may wish to also contact your local Legal Assistance Office .
- Submit a complaint to the CFPB . Your complaint will be shared with the FTC. The FTC and CFPB enforce the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
If you suspect discrimination
It can be difficult to know for sure if illegal discrimination is happening. But if you think a landlord or a tenant background check company has discriminated, you may consider taking the following steps:
- Keep records of what happened. As soon as possible, write down in detail what happened and when, and who you spoke to. Back up your notes on your email or other online cloud storage service.
- Get copies of notices. If you’re rejected or get notice of a negative housing decision orally, ask if the landlord will give you the notice in writing, even by email or text.
- Ask for the landlord’s screening criteria or policy in writing. The criteria or policy may be discriminatory. You can consider filing a complaint with HUD and submitting a report to DOJ if you decided not to apply for housing because of the criteria or policy.
- Don’t wait too long before filing a complaint with HUD . A complaint with HUD under the Fair Housing Act must be filed within one year of the discrimination. Some states and localities require filing earlier than one year.
- If you file a timely complaint with HUD, it will investigate your complaint. If HUD determines that there is reasonable cause to believe that discrimination occurred, its lawyers will bring the case on your behalf, for free, before an administrative law judge. Or HUD may refer your case to DOJ, which may bring lawsuits, again for free, on your behalf.
- You do not need a lawyer to file a discrimination complaint with HUD. However, some local legal aid and legal services offices , civil rights organizations, and fair housing organizations have lawyers who may be able to advise or represent you.
- Report housing discrimination to DOJ . Under the Fair Housing Act, DOJ may bring a lawsuit where there is a pattern or practice of discrimination. While DOJ determines whether it can file a lawsuit, it may encourage you to file a complaint with HUD.
- Look into additional protections. Local legal aid and legal services lawyers, lawyers from civil rights or fair housing organizations, other local lawyers , and the state attorney general’s office may also be aware of local protections that your city or state may offer. If you are applying for federally subsidized housing or a Section 8 voucher, you may have additional protections (for example, under the Violence Against Women Act ). To find out, contact a legal aid or legal services lawyer or HUD .

Thousands of London long-term rental properties at risk from holiday lets plan
Government rule changes on Airbnb-style rentals could lead to loss of more than 10,000 long-term rentable properties
A loophole in government proposals to clamp down on Airbnb-style holiday lets could lead to the loss of thousands of long-term rental properties for families in London.
The government scrapped tax breaks for holiday homes in the budget and last month unveiled a registration scheme to help councils control the booming holiday let market, which Michael Gove, the levelling-up secretary, claims is denying local people the opportunity to buy or rent a home.
But the government also intends to give landlords a “permitted development right” to change rented properties into holiday accommodation without planning permission. This could overturn existing planning controls in London , where landlords seeking to let homes to tourists for more than 90 days must first ask borough planners.
Adam Hug, the Labour leader of Westminster city council, said the changes could lead to the loss of more than 10,000 rentable homes in Westminster: “Our fear is these changes will override existing controls in London and make a bad situation even worse,” he said. “The real losers in this will be people looking to rent properties who now have even less chance of finding a home.”
While councils will be able to bring in planning controls in areas blighted by too many holiday lets, they will need to collect robust evidence and take part in a year-long process. Camden council cabinet member Danny Beales wrote to Gove warning that a “12-month delay means we would be closing the stable door after the horse has bolted”.
The government is also proposing to give retrospective planning permission to properties now used for holiday rentals. Beales argues this would aid landlords already evading planning restrictions in London. The London borough estimates it and could lead to the loss of 6,000 homes, “equating to a loss of equivalent to the amount of housing Camden is expected to deliver in the next six years”.
Holiday lets are a far more lucrative option for landlords. The owner of a one-bed studio in Camden can make £1,173 per week as a holiday let compared with £270 on the private rental market, according to the borough.
There are no planning controls on holiday lets outside the capital, but many of the hardest-hit councils plan to bring in restrictions, which will be possible for the first time under the proposals. Cornwall has about 12,500 holiday lets and 27,000 people on its social housing waiting list, with around half deemed to be in priority need of housing.
“Over the last 20 years, we’ve seen a decline in the amount of hotel accommodation and the rise of people wishing to have self-catering holidays in residential properties,” said Olly Monk, Cornwall council’s Conservative cabinet member for planning and housing. “The end result of that is the scales have tipped too far in the favour of people letting out their properties for holiday accommodation at the expense of local families being able to find affordable rental accommodation.”
The Department for Levelling Up said permitted development rights would be rolled out nationwide, adding it could not comment on the impact of existing rules in London. It said the government was eliminating tax advantages for holiday lets and giving communities more control over future rises in the number of short-term lets. “Short-term lets can play an important role in the UK’s flourishing tourism economy, but in some areas, local families and young people feel they are being shut out of the housing market and denied the opportunity to rent or buy in their own community,” the spokesperson added.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported
B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.
Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.
Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.
Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.
Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.
The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.
Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."
More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.
Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.
The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."
The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.
On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.
The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.
There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
