The entire experience was top notch. Boat has a great set up with a large indoors area with multiple tables and a bar and area to dance. There is a large outside area on top of the boat with bar tables and tons of space to dance and enjoy the outside. The captain did a great job of touring the bay with a real close flyby of under the Midway. Staff was very helpful and took care of everything. We also purchased one of their charcuterie boards and it was pretty amazing. Highly recommend if you're looking for a large party on the water!

This was the one of the best decisions I made for my wedding weekend! The Legacy Cruise team and Sam really made us all feel at home on the yacht and were very accommodating to our whole party. Planning a yacht party in San Diego can turn a fun event into an overwhelming one, especially if you aren’t familiar with yachts. In this article, we will give you a general checklist that you can discuss with your yacht rental company in order to be fully prepared for your yacht party!

How many guests are you going to have? 

The more the merrier? Hold on a second, this is a more complex question than you think! Reason being, that most party yacht rentals have a maximum capacity that the United States Coast Guard (USCG) has approved. Most commonly you will find the maximum passengers to be 6, 12, 48, 100, and 500+. You want to choose a capacity that provides your guests plenty of space but won’t empty your pockets.

Pro Tip: We often get asked “do babies count as passengers too?”. The answer is, yes! The Coast Guard views guest counts as “souls” aboard a boat, meaning even children count as passengers.

What type of yacht will you choose?

The type of yacht can dictate what type of party you are going to have. For example, if you rent a sailing yacht during the winter you’ll be at the mercy of the wind, elements, and possible spilled drinks. Take into account the time of year, the weather, and also the customer reviews of the yacht charter. 

For the sailing enthusiasts that enjoy being out in the elements and have a passion for sailing. 

Motor Yacht:

 For guests that want to be “inside” more than “outside” as motor yachts prioritize the interior of the yacht. 

Catamaran: 

The best of both interior and exterior yachting. Enjoy the ability to have plenty of outside space as well as inside space! 

Pro Tip: Get seasick? Choose a Catamaran! Catamarans are much wider than sailboats and motor yachts making them more stable. 

How long are you going to rent the yacht?

Be aware of hourly/daily minimums when you rent a yacht. Many yacht charter companies require minimums because of staffing, and costs of setup and breakdown of the yacht. Typically you’ll find that yachts have a 2-hour minimum, 4 hour minimum and even an entire day minimum. If you’re throwing a party, you’ll want a minimum of 2-hours , but my advice is to go for  of 4-hours. Remember, this is on the water…so wherever you go, you must come back! To make things more clear, if you rent a yacht for 2 hours, 50% of the time will go to just coming back from where you came from! If you plan on having your private yacht rental during sunset hours, make sure to check the sunset times. You can do that here .

Pro Tip: Do at least 3 to 4 hours on the yacht if your budget can handle it! You won’t regret it! 

Will you need food and drinks?

Will you need food and drinks? 

Before you go all-in on a party boat, make sure you know the details of the food and beverage situation. You’ll find that some yachts have liquor licenses (the ability to sell alcohol) and some allow BYOB and food. Lugging around a bunch of coolers of drinks and food isn’t an ideal way to spend your day on a yacht!  I recommend either having the food catered, or renting a yacht that provides catering for you. Does the yacht include a bartender? If not, take a look into hiring one! Yachts and great cocktails go hand-in-hand! 

Pro Tip: Don’t bring food or drinks that stains boats. Remember, it’s your financial responsibility if you cause a more than normal cleaning and/or damage to the yacht.

Let’s get down to the moolah! I looked up 5 yacht charters in San Diego and got an average cost of $1,100/hr for up to 50 guests. Not too shabby considering that’s only $22/hr per person! When searching for the best pricing, always ask if there’s any specials going on, especially if it’s off season (October-March).

San Diego cracks down on party businesses at city beaches

San Diego is no longer allowing private companies to stage picnics, corporate events, large parties, bonfires or similar organized activities on any city beach, though they may be permitted at south Scripps Park and south Cuvier Park in La Jolla, in addition to 10 other sites in the city.

City spokeswoman Nicole Darling said the crackdown, coming in advance of spring break and the busy summer beach season, was prompted by complaints from beach-goers and neighboring residents.

Beach-goers often are asked to relocate on the sand to make way for large parties, Darling said. And some parties are so big that they limit public access to popular beach areas, she said.

The parties also are often noisy and sometimes run late into the night, prompting complaints from neighbors, especially on weeknights, Darling said.

The issue came to a boil in La Jolla in summer 2021 when residents complained that a San Diego company was conducting bonfires in portable pits and serving alcohol at Marine Street Beach.

Residents also complained about wedding planning companies holding ceremonies at Windansea and other La Jolla beaches . The city issues permits for designated wedding sites at shoreline parks and beaches and Balboa Park.

The companies affected by the ban on what the city refers to as “luxury picnics” say it leaves thousands of tourists without services they rely on to make their vacations more memorable. They also call it an arbitrary crackdown enacted without a City Council vote.

Though tourists do sometimes use the party companies because they can’t take chairs and other party gear on a plane, Darling said much of the business the companies do is corporate events.

The ban is a shift in direction for San Diego officials, who announced in 2022 that they were exploring a formal permitting process for businesses that hold beach parties to bring order to a sometimes-chaotic industry.

Many of the companies embraced the idea of a permitting process, despite city officials suggesting new requirements like insurance policies and new fees for things like equipment setup.

But the city told the companies last fall that it had decided to re-evaluate the idea of a formal permitting process. This winter, officials announced a complete beach ban and said it would take effect Feb. 1.

To try to soften the blow, city officials said such events still could take place at 12 sites in city parks — five at Mission Bay, four in shoreline parks and three in Balboa Park.

Some community leaders say the city should have followed through with the permitting idea for beaches instead of opting for a blanket ban that may be hard to enforce.

“In my opinion, the city has dropped the ball,” said Larry Webb, president of the Mission Beach Town Council and leader of the Coastal Coalition, a group of beach communities.

The permitting process would have allowed the companies to operate legally and be regulated by the city, similar to kayak rental businesses and surf camps, Webb said.

City Councilman Joe LaCava, whose District 1 includes La Jolla, spearheaded the effort to create a permitting process before it was abandoned. His office declined to respond to questions about the ban.

Jean Walker, who owns event company Beach Genie, said she created a coalition of vendors “so we could try to get a real permitting process.”

She said that would have brought some order to a chaotic situation by codifying the city’s expectations and making it easier for the city to weed out party companies that violate bans against using glass and serving alcohol.

Walker said creating a permitting program is not that complicated, noting that the city of Oceanside and the state, which oversees beaches in Carlsbad and Coronado, have such programs for beach businesses.

Though the city considered a permitting process, Darling said officials have been contemplating a ban since early in the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said beach events got larger, louder and much more common during the pandemic, primarily as an alternative to bars and restaurants that were closed for months.

The city Parks & Recreation Department created a new web page for luxury picnic rules at sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/permits , and department officials said they’ve begun contacting the roughly 100 companies that stage such events in San Diego to let them know about the beach ban and the 12 permittable locations.

Rene Contreras, who owns BluLite Bonfires, said the ban came out of nowhere with no warning to the companies, no public hearings and no vote by the City Council.

Darling said that’s because such commercial activities are already illegal under the city’s municipal code, but it hasn’t been enforced.

Contreras and Walker said it’s unfair for the city to ban the events they stage but keep allowing beachfront hotels to rent out equipment for parties and other events.

But Darling said comparing rules for high-end resorts to rules for companies that stage beach parties is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Walker said she believes the ban will make things worse, calling it essentially unenforceable. The city has just two park rangers to enforce the ban across a large area that includes La Jolla, Ocean Beach, Sunset Cliffs, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.

Instead of a formal permitting process that could have required the companies to have insurance and pay city fees, a ban will return San Diego beaches to anarchy, said Walker, who added that many small companies have told her they plan to ignore the ban until they are cited.

City Lifeguard Chief James Gartland said he supports the ban.

“Unregulated commercial activity on the sand takes up public space, negatively affects the beach and creates a distraction for lifeguards,” he said.

A California yacht owner's vicious beef with a dock worker has reached death-threat levels -- and their exchange was caught on camera and included a nude, and very rude, gesture!

Check out the clip ... it all unfolds when San Diego entrepreneur Ajay Thakore swings by the swanky Marriott Marquis Marina in his rare $4.5M Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht to pick up one of his employees -- but things boil over when dock worker Joseph Holt tells him he can't be there.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, flips out on Holt big time ... and starts spewing threats like, "I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill."

And it doesn't stop there -- as Thakore's pulling out of the harbor, he drops trou to make a full frontal salute in Holt's direction. Stay classy, San Diego!

Holt's only retaliation was flipping the bird, and he later told CBS8 that was all he could do to keep his cool and avoid escalating the situation.

Holt says parts of the altercation were not captured on camera, and he adds ... Thakore not only threatened to kill him, but also claimed to have connections who could totally mess up his life.

Holt also says Thakore pulled out $100 bills and tossed them at him, even chucking some in the water.

BTW, Thakore's done some backpedaling since the ugly exchange -- he now says, "The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange."

FWIW ... One of Thakore’s employees claims the whole thing began because other dock workers blocked him from boarding the yacht.

Oh, and if that fancy Lambo yacht looks familiar -- it's the same one Chuck Liddell recently tumbled off just last month. Now it's famous AND infamous!

Croatia’s top court rules that the president can’t run in the parliamentary election unless he quits

Croatian’s president can’t run for prime minister, take part in the upcoming parliamentary election or campaign in favor of an opposition party, unless he resigns immediately from his current post, according to a ruling on Monday from the country’s top court.

President Zoran Milanović blasted the Constitutional Court decision, saying: “They did it in a gangster way.”

“I will eventually be prime minister, but I won’t tell that gang how,” he told reporters.

Milanović on Friday called a parliamentary election for April 17, but hours later announced that he would run for Croatia’s next prime minister on the list of the opposition Social Democratic Party.

The surprise announcement has triggered a deep political crisis in the European Union and NATO-member country, with the state’s constitutional court called in to give its opinion on Milanović’s move to run in the parliamentary election.

“If he (president) wants to take part in a political campaign … he must submit his resignation immediately to the president of the Constitutional Court,” presiding judge Miroslav Separovic said at a news conference.

“The president and the SDP party are obliged to act in accordance with this warning and stop violating the constitution,” he said, adding that the president is a nonpartisan figure, according to the constitution, and as such Milanović isn’t allowed to take part in an election or campaign in favor of one political party.

The ballot next month will pit the ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union against the SDP-led group of centrist and left-leaning parties, which have announced that they will run as an alliance.

After announcing his bid to become Croatia’s new prime minister, Milanović immediately started an election campaign on behalf of the SDP. But constitutional court judges ruled on Monday that the move was unconstitutional.

Milanović intended to challenge the current conservative prime minister, Andrej Plenković, and his ruling Croatian Democratic Union, known by its Croatian initials as the HDZ, which he has accused of rampant corruption. The two have been involved in continuous bickering over a number of issues.

The HDZ has largely held power since Croatia gained independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991.

The Adriatic Sea nation became the newest member of the European Union in 2013, and joined Europe’s passport-free travel area and the eurozone last year.

Croatia is also slated to hold a presidential election by the end of the year. The president holds a largely ceremonial role, while the prime minister exerts most of the political power in the country.
