Fast hulls in all driving situations.

Seaworthiness is a non‐negotiable quality on a BAVARIA motor yacht; among other characteristics, a high‐sided hull ensures that this demand is satisfied. With a R-/S-Line or VIRTESS you don’t only drive safely, you also feel secure when moving around on these boats – this is due to broad gunwales and a railing that extends from bow to stern. Isophthalic acid (IPA) resins in the outer layers, used during the laminating process, ensure that the hull of a BAVARIA is of the highest quality. These offer effective protection against osmosis and thus promote longevity of the BAVARIA. The hull and deck of a BAVARIA is made of sandwich construction with foam inserts.

Cost-effective yet smart engines

BAVARIA is one of the world’s most innovative shipyards, working with the best suppliers of engines to equip our motor yachts with cost‐effective and powerful engines. We were one of the first shipyards to use Volvo Penta’s modern IPS system, a Pod system with forward‐facing double propellers. The IPS drive has considerable advantages with regard to performance, exhaust emissions and comfort. It increases range by 40 per cent at a 20 per cent higher top speed, with 30 per cent less fuel consumption and thus also 30 percent less CO2 emissions. With a joystick and software adapted to every individual BAVARIA, the two IPS drives become the ultimate docking system in the harbour. Berthing with the fingertips – child’s play!

Safety through technology, from bow to stern

Fuel is the lifeblood of BAVARIA motor yacht. It is therefore important to store it well and to conduct it correctly. BAVARIA ensures this by using stainless steel tanks for example, pressed and therefore extremely durable, sleeves for the fuel lines and magnetic closures for the petrol lines on standard engines. An engine – diesel and petrol – also needs to breathe in order to be able to keep the cylinder head cool. Every BAVARIA motor yacht therefore has a fan for active engine room ventilation.

World Debut of Bavaria C46 at Cannes Yachting Festival 2023

Bavaria C46

With the new Bavaria C46, Bavaria Yachts presents the next generation of the C-LINE at the 2 023 Yachting Festival in Cannes . With the BAVARIA C38 and C42 already launched, Bavaria Yachts is presenting the next evolution.

For the new Bavaria C46, the C-LINE concept has been further developed and re-interpreted in all areas. For example, the characteristic features of the hull design with the typical Bavaria V-bow and chines, which not only give the Bavaria C46 impressive sailing characteristics, but also create more light space and living comfort below deck in the saloon as well as the cabins. The Bavaria C46 sets a new standard in its class and is a yacht that combines long-standing Bavaria strengths with new features, thus finding convincing solutions for many customers and requirements. Bavaria will present further details about the Bavaria C46 early next year at boot 2023.

Like all C-LINE models, the Bavaria C46 was created in cooperation between the BAVARIA development team and Cossutti Yacht Design and offers a convincing combination for the most diverse requirements on board.

Bavaria C46

The Bavaria C46 combines the typical generous Bavaria space on board and the proven Made-in-Germany solidity with even more sailing performance and greater comfort on board. The distinctive chines at the stern and the Bavaria V-bow have already given the Bavaria C38 and C42 exceptionally good and fast sailing characteristics.

Cossutti Yacht Design has again successfully applied this design philosophy to the 14.86 meters long and 4.70 meters wide hull of the Bavaria C46. As a result, the Bavaria C46 possesses agile steering, converts the wind even faster into boat speed and, at the same time, allows for maximally large cabins in the stern and foreship. Thus, space and sailing pleasure are a winning combination on the Bavaria C46.

Bavaria C45

“ After the presentation of the C38 and C42, which was also named the 2021 European Yacht of the Year, our customers have very clearly signaled to us that they look forward to a quick continuation of the concept. Therefore, we have put all our energy into the further development of the concept and are now in a position to present our customers the Bavaria C46 with its convincing solutions ,” explains Marc Diening, CEO of Bavaria Yachts.

Whether relaxed and safe sailing with a small crew, single-handed sailing or cruising with a large crew with sporting ambitions – the Bavaria C46 offers all the necessary options for pure sailing pleasure with six optional winch positions, well over 100 square meters of sail area on the wind and optional Gennaker and Code 0.

Bavaria C46

From the very spacious cockpit, the sun loungers on the foredeck or after a relaxing time on the large bathing platform, you can quickly get into the water. Heavy but useful water sports equipment is always stored within reach in the Bavaria B-Box, so that the hours at anchor or in water can be enjoyed in a relaxed way by the entire crew.

Decades of experience on coastal and long-distance cruises have shaped further smart options on board. Customers can choose from various layouts ranging from 3 to 5 cabins, including a 4-cabin layout with 4 in-suite heads or a 3-cabin layout with an additional separate room at the companionway. This can be used, for example, as a storage and tool room or as a directly accessible locker for wet oilskins. A full navigation station is always on board with the Bavaria C46.

“ The requirements for a sailing yacht around 15 meters are much more versatile today and can no longer simply be divided into classic categories such as performance or family cruiser, charter or owner’s yacht. During the development of the Bavaria C46, the focus was solely on what offers our customers real added value on board. And when looking for the right solution, detail by detail, we were able to disprove supposed necessary compromises in many places. With the BAVARIA C46, we have found the balance that customers expect from a sailing yacht of this size with many well-thought-out solutions, ” reports Marc Diening.

In the first half of 2023, the Bavaria C46 will do her first test sails. Further details about the Bavaria C46 will be presented at boot 2023 in Duesseldorf from January 21 to 29.

Bavaria Yachts’ C42 – New in every sense

  • Advertorial

Bavaria Yachts

It’s Bavaria Yachts’ big comeback boat in more ways than one. Launched at the recent Düsseldorf Boat Show, the Bavaria C42 is the first new sailing yacht brought to market under the shipyard’s new management, following a change of ownership. Not only that, but it signals a significant shift in Bavaria’s yacht building strategy: a definite and deliberate move away from the rather sedate family cruisers of the previous generation, which were aimed primarily at novice sailors, towards a new and more broadly appealing range of boats.

Newsletter

They’ll still be spacious, high-volume cruisers designed for easy handling but the Bavaria C42 makes it clear that the new generation of Bavarias will be more rewarding to sail with bigger, higher aspect sailplans, better ballast ratios, sharper handling under sail and more performance potential.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the design team: Maurizio Cossutti and Alessandro Ganz are best known for their IRC/ORC racers but since 2015 the highly regarded duo have overseen a subtle design evolution at Bavaria Yachts with a gradually increasing emphasis on sailing performance in the three models leading up to the Bavaria C42. ‘The yard’s request was to retain the main design features of the C57, C50 and C45,’ Maurizio Cossutti explains, ‘but at the same time to impart a clear, precise sign of the change in direction and mindset.’

Cossutti Yacht Design has earned a reputation for designing hulls that are elegant as well as easily driven and this one is no exception. At first glance the Bavaria C42 is a goodlooking yacht with an attractive sheerline, an elegant silhouette, some race-derived design features and a sleeker, generally more angular appearance than previous models. That said, the brand’s identity has been carefully preserved and despite the Italian-accented style of the hull shape and deck layout, it’s unmistakably a Bavaria.

Hard chines make berths bigger Perhaps the most obvious of this yacht’s key features – especially for those who know the brand well – are the prominent hard chines running back from amidships to the aft quarters of the hull, just above the waterline. It’s the first time Bavaria has ever produced a sailing yacht with a chined hull.

Bavaria Yachts

Some yachts’ chines are mainly cosmetic but as Cossutti and Pascal Kuhn, Bavaria’s product manager for the Bavaria C42, are both keen to point out, on this boat they serve several functions. ‘We’ve developed the Bavaria way of doing chines,’ Kuhn says, explaining that they give the hull a significant amount of additional form stability while creating useful extra living space, or stowage space, inside. ‘And it’s the Italian way of doing chines,’ says Alessandro Ganz. ‘We’ve saved a lot of wetted area and of course we care about the aesthetics too.’ The positioning of chines on a cruising yacht’s hull has to be extremely precise, Cossutti explains, much more so than on a racing yacht hull where higher boat speed allows a greater margin of error.

‘The position is crucial, otherwise negative effects can occur.’ The extra form stability of the chines comes into effect at a heel angle of 15 to 20 degrees and the hull’s waterline length also extends, improving the yacht’s boat speed when sailing upwind. ‘When designing the underwater hull, you can also use the dynamic effect of the chines for faster water drainage on the hull,’ Cossutti says.

The other big benefit of these boxy aft sections becomes clear when you look into one of the aft cabins: where most yachts have a tapered double berth due to the curvature of the hull, the C42’s aft cabins have straight full-size doubles: 1.6m wide all the way from head to foot.

At the aft end of the hull, another innovation – Kuhn’s idea this time – has added about half a metre of extra length to the saloon. In most cruising yachts the aft end of the accommodation is curtailed by the steering system, which occupies the last few feet of the hull and requires a bit of elbow room around it for maintenance and repair. On the Bavaria C42, it’s neatly slotted into a shallow recess under the aft end of the cockpit, allowing the aft cabins to be shunted further aft, but easily accessible from above simply by lifting a panel in the cockpit sole between the twin wheels. It’s a great solution, easier to inspect and maintain than the usual setup.

Bavaria Yachts

Benefits of a bulbous bow The other obvious design feature of the C42’s hull – which sets it apart not only from the other Cossutti-designed C-Line models but also from nearly all the other new boats at Düsseldorf – is a bow profile that flares out from a narrow vee at the waterline to a rounded, high-volume section at deck level. It’s a Cossuttiand- Ganz innovation derived from recent offshore racing yacht designs, with great potential for production boats. ‘Most modern yachts have a very wide stern and a lot of volume in the aft sections of the hull,’ Cossutti explains. ‘When the angle of heel increases, the hull gets out of balance. The stern comes further out of the water and the bow is pushed further into the water. As a result the pressure on the rudder increases. A vee-shaped bow with more volume, which we call the C42 Bavaria V-Bow, compensates for this effect and the boat is easier to steer. However, it was important for us to keep the bow narrow at the waterline so that the dive into the wave is not too hard when the boat is sailing upright.’

Bavaria Yachts

As with the chines, the new bow profile produced unexpected benefits for Kuhn’s in-house team who were designing the yacht’s interior. Thanks to its bulbous bow, the Bavaria C42 has a huge full-depth sail locker that can easily swallow a crossover sail, a gennaker and a full set of fenders and dock lines, with a separate compartment for the anchor windlass and chain. The other big benefit is the extra space in the fore cabin, which has to be seen to be believed. ‘We were able to expand the double berth to a width of 1.8m and a length of 2.3m,’ Kuhn says. ‘And we’ve got full headroom throughout the cabin and plenty of large lockers.’

Bigger sails, better balance Another notable feature of the C42 s the height and position of the twin-spreader, deck-stepped mast. It’s extremely tall and stepped further aft than you might expect. The extra height allows more sail power and compensates for the loss of roach – as Kuhn explains, most buyers are expected to opt for in-mast furling mainsails. ‘When you get to 42ft long, slab furling starts to be hard work,’ Cossutti says. The difference in performance is minimal: ‘With vertical battens providing a moderate roach, you will have only five per cent less power. And in 10kts of wind, the self-tacking jib will give the same performance as the 110% genoa with a narrower sheeting angle, too.’

Technical specs LOA 12.4m LOD 11.99m LWL 11.27m Beam 4.3m Draught 2.1m or 1.7m Displacement 9,750kg Keel bulb weight 2,700kg or 3,010kg Mast height above WL 21.1m Upwind sail area 100.6m2 Mainsail 52.8m2 Self-tacking jib 46.8m2 110% genoa 46.8m2

Moving the mast step aft is more to do with handling, Ganz explains: ‘We always take great care to achieve the best possible balance.’ With the mast stepped aft, the headsail and mainsail of the C42 are roughly the same size and deliver similar amounts of power, resulting in a nicely balanced sail plan.

Self tacking jibs are typically small, but a large one actually makes a lot of sense. Not having to haul the sheets of a powerful genoa in and out with every tack is a definite benefit and the self-tacking option makes the yacht much more nimble. ‘If you are sailing somewhere like Sweden where there are lots of rocks you need to be able to tack very quickly,’ Cossutti says. The self-tacker is fitted as standard and in another nod to performance, the standard spec also includes a backstay tensioner.

Meanwhile, back in Giebelstadt, the next new model in Bavaria’s comeback range is already taking shape – shrouded in secrecy, of course – but with a host of new features and design ideas, the C42 is a taste of things to come.

Bavaria C46 review: More accommodation and better performance?

  • Rupert Holmes
  • March 21, 2024

Bavaria claims more accommodation and better performance for its Bavaria C46 second generation c-line. Can you really have both on a mass market design?

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

It’s often thought that yachts with wide forward sections inevitably slam uncomfortably in head seas. But that’s not always the case as, when the boat heels, the hull’s immersed section changes shape and no longer presents the flat underside to the waves. Conversely, traditional hull designs with a V shape forward might slice through waves neatly when upright, but can slam badly when heeled as they present an almost flat surface that bashes down on the water after plunging off wave crests.

I tested a prototype Bavaria C46, used as a test bed for almost every conceivable extra (which made it over 70% more expensive than the base price model). For my first sail we had a cross-shore breeze of 8-15 knots, combined with an awkward short onshore swell generated by an approaching vigorous low pressure system.

On starboard tack we were therefore heading more or less into the waves, which led to an occasional soft bounce, but the motion wasn’t uncomfortable and there was no heavy slamming of the type that saps boat speed.

Bavaria’s now trademark V-bow helps create full forward sections that both increase space in the owner’s cabin forward and increase form stability. Maximum beam is carried almost right aft, where there are well defined chines. It’s a combination that creates very high form stability and excellent sail carrying ability.

The single rudder gives a very direct, light and balanced feel on the helm. Wheel pedestals are well configured, with space for big MFDs plus separate instrument displays alongside, and are angled so that you can easily see displays when sitting outboard, where there’s a great view of the jib luff.

Sailing upwind under full furling main and 106% jib in 8-10 knots of breeze at a true wind angle of 45° we averaged a shade over 6 knots boat speed.

Bavaria C46 handling

While many of today’s yachts sail surprisingly well in very light airs, I found we needed 10 knots of true wind speed for the Bavaria C46 to really come alive, at which point the boat’s motion also became more stable. The only exception was tight reaching angles with the Code 0 set, when we averaged just under 7 knots with the true wind just aft of the beam in 8-10 knots of breeze.

The test boat has a furling main and jib, both made by Elvstrom from 95% recycled polyester with 5% Dyneema that increases strength and stretch resistance. Bavaria says for this boat pricing is on a par with a classic polyester laminate, but it’s stronger and has reduced elongation under load thanks to the Dyneema content.

Vertical battens to support the leech helped the main to set well and add a useful amount of area compared to a hollow leech battenless sail. This undoubtedly contributed to the good handling characteristics though there’s also an option for a smaller self-tacking jib.

Hanse 460 review: First in a new range

For some of us, sailing has always been about the functional and fundamental. We enjoy sailing for sailing’s sake. But…

Boats equipped with a fully battened mainsail have around 5% extra sail area, therefore ought to perform slightly better in light airs, even upwind.

The coachroof-mounted double mainsheet system is controlled by winches just ahead of the helm stations and works well at controlling twist. They can also be used as a partial preventer to steady the boom in light airs. It’s an efficient set-up that allows accurate sail trim, doesn’t get in the way of those who would prefer to sit back and relax, and is much safer than cockpit-mounted mainsheets.

The Elvstrom permanent hoist Code 0 can be left up when furled without worry, thanks to its 50% mid girth (reduced from the 75% standard figure for a racing sail), a heavier cloth than standard, and a higher clew. The latter also makes it more suited to deeper reaching angles than a more race-oriented sail shape.

On the downside, if the code sail is hoisted and set up in advance, there’s some turbulence over the jib when sailing upwind. For most owners the advantages greatly outweigh the drawbacks, but the additional turbulence does make it a little more difficult to settle the boat into a groove when sailing upwind in lighter conditions.

Sheeted in: there’s a choice of 106% genoa or self-tacking jib. Photo: Nicola Brollo/Fivestudio.it

Bearing away, unfurling the Code 0 and rolling the jib away in wind speeds of 12-15 knots we made 7.5-8.5 knots at a true wind angle of 120°, roughly keeping pace with a more performance oriented yacht of similar size. Hardening up to bring the true wind on the beam, and the apparent therefore well forward, boosted boat speed to an average just shy of 9 knots.

The Code 0 proved to be a very flexible sail for a wide range of wind angles and the convenience of being able to leave it set will be very appealing to many cruising crews. It offers the benefit of having the sail available for use without the need for foredeck antics at sea.

Life on deck

All lines on the Bavaria C46 are led to control stations just ahead of the wheel pedestals. It’s easy to reach the winches from the helm, while there’s also space for one person outboard and another in the cockpit ahead of the pedestals. Thanks to the coachroof-mounted mainsheet there’s also no danger of the sheet sweeping across this part of the cockpit and endangering those involved in manoeuvres. There are also good rope bins aft of the winches.

The optional coaming winches on the test boat are not really needed, although if an overlapping jib is fitted, the sheet can be led back here. However, they are primarily available as an option for those who expect to sail with larger crews.

Bavaria has eschewed incorporating a tender garage in the Bavaria C46 on the basis they are inevitably a big compromise on a boat of this size, resulting in an undersized tender and smaller aft cabins. Instead it offers telescopic davits, while on-deck stowage includes two very useful shallow lockers under the cockpit benches, plus a big lazarette with access between the helm stations.

There’s also a large sail locker forward, although this falls short of being sufficiently spacious for an optional skipper’s cabin. The interior arrangement of our test boat also includes a useful walk-in storeroom near the foot of the companionway.

There are two cockpit table options, either a large central one or twin tables with folding leaves that almost meet in the middle, but frustratingly leave a small gap. The test boat also has a cockpit fridge, plus a barbecue aft under the helm seats that’s designed for use from the large, electrically-operated bathing platform. Retractable davits solve the issue of stowing the tender on shorter passages in settled condition, while it can be hauled onto the foredeck for ocean crossings or heavy weather.

Smart volume

On descending the companionway the generous accommodation volume of the Bavaria C46 is immediately apparent in the wide open spaces of the saloon and impressively large owner’s cabin forward. The raised navigation station to port is a positive feature and puts you at eye level with those who are standing in the galley.

This is immediately forward of the navstation and has a huge amount of countertop space and stowage, plus options for plenty of refrigeration, including a large two-drawer unit and separate top-loading fridge. The test boat was also fitted with an optional compact dishwasher and cooker hood, in addition to a standard opening portlight above the three burner gas cooker and oven.

On the downside, it wouldn’t be easy to use the galley at all, even for making a cup of tea, when well heeled on port tack in a big breeze.

new bavaria yachts

Owner’s cabin with king-size double berth. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud/imacis.fr/EYOTY

Our test boat has a three-cabin, two-head layout, plus a big walk-in store room, making it ideal for private owners. In this version all berths are a full European king size, with 160cm width across their entire length. Two different four-cabin layouts are also offered, including a classic four-cabin/four-heads charter arrangement, with two doubles forward. The second option is a four-cabin/two-head owner’s version that retains the appealing master cabin forward, but adds a small Pullman cabin with bunk beds ahead of the starboard quarter cabin.

The Bavaria C46 owner’s cabin is a lovely open space, with separate toilet and shower compartment. On the downside, there’s not a huge amount of stowage here. The aft cabins are of equal size, though on the test boat the port one is set up as a permanent double, while starboard is configured as two singles that convert easily to a double. Both these cabins share the well-appointed heads near the companionway.

The storeroom will appeal to many private owners and has potential to provide plenty of well-organised and easily accessed stowage, as well as space for a washer/drier.

new bavaria yachts

Aft cabins can be double or twin configuration. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud/imacis.fr/EYOTY

The standard of joinery is generally good, though our the prototype Bavaria C46 we sailed had some systems in the bilge, including the engine start battery, which are located on plywood bases whose edges were not sealed with epoxy. We’re told this arrangement will be revised for production boats.

There’s also some exposed sealant visible on deck, for instance, at the join of the coachroof and the mouldings that form conduits for the lines led aft. It’s neatly done, but even UV stabilised materials of this type can eventually turn yellow and therefore mar cosmetic appearances.

On the plus side, there’s neat and easy access under the cockpit floor to reach the quadrant and steering system. The 244lt diesel tank may limit autonomy for those who want to venture further afield, but there are options for up to a generous 800lt of fresh water.

Construction is of conventional hand laid polyester and E-glass, with PVC foam core above the waterline, reinforced in way of the chainplates and fore and aft bulkheads. The inner matrix is also hand laid in E-glass and polyester, with the keel area laminated to the hull.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised by the C46 – it sails better than might be expected, particularly once the breeze reaches 10 knots, and sail handling systems are well thought out. Apart from a few caveats such as lack of handholds in the saloon and galley, the accommodation is lovely and spacious. Big selling points for private owners include the owner’s cabin and the storeroom that will help keep a plethora of accumulated kit well organised. Performance doesn’t match the best contemporary performance cruisers of similar length, but they tend to be significantly more expensive. On the other hand, the C46 is certainly equal to, or better than, most of those designed a couple of decades ago, yet has vastly more accommodation space both above and below decks.

Customers can choose from various layouts ranging from 3 to 5 cabins, including a 4‐cabin layout with 4 in‐suite heads or a 3‐cabin layout with an additional separate room at the companionway. This can be used, for example, as a storage and tool room or as a directly accessible locker for wet oilskins. A full navigation station is always on board with the BAVARIA C46.

“The requirements for a sailing yacht around 15 meters are much more versatile today and can no longer simply be divided into classic categories such as performance or family cruiser, charter or owner’s yacht. During the development of the BAVARIA C46, the focus was solely on what offers our customers real added value on board. And when looking for the right solution, detail by detail, we were able to disprove supposed necessary compromises in many places. With the BAVARIA C46, we have found the balance that customers expect from a sailing yacht of this size with many well‐thought‐out solutions” reports Marc Diening.

In the first half of 2023, the BAVARIA C46 will do her first test sails. Further details about the BAVARIA C46 will be presented at Boot 2023 in Dusseldorf from January 21st to 29th.

BAVARIA C46 – Technical Data:

BMW Neue Klasse X Previews 2025 iX3 That’ll Make Grilles Great Again

New in name and design philosophy, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X will replace the iX3 next year

BMW Neue Klasse X Previews 2025 iX3 That’ll Make Grilles Great Again

BMW is in the midst of reinventing itself, and the all-electric Vision Neue Klasse X previews the first SUV to wear the Neue Klasse moniker. The first batch of these iX3-sized cars will go into production in 2025, joining the production version of the Vision Neue Klasse sedan previewed last year.

As with the original Vision Neue Klasse , the Neue Klasse X’s design gives us a reasonably good idea of what to expect from the production car. The X is the second of six EVs that will ride on the Neue Klasse platform, all slated to be launched between 2025 and 2027.

Honey, I Shrunk The Grille

While BMW would like us all to focus on what this iX3 replacement represents for the brand, there’s no getting around the styling. The company itself describes the design language as being “pared-down,” which may be proof the designers have finally heard the public’s pleas to create something a bit less, well, grille-heavy.

Related: BMW Bringing Six Neue Klasse EVs To The Market This Decade

The Vision Neue Klasse X features a thin kidney grille up front, highly reminiscent of classic BMWs like the 2002 and, of course, the original Neue Klasse sedan from the ’60s. It’s not all retro goodness though: the grilles naturally light up, as is par for the course these days with BMWs. Look closer, and you’ll see those kidneys have been hollowed out with a melon baller. They’re deeply sculpted, so much so that it looks like one of those early demos for the wonders of 3D printing. The lights themselves follow the trend set by the Neue Klasse sedan — ditching the circle/squircles and instead getting vertical LEDs.

BMW speaks of the EV platform offering their designers the opportunity to embrace “classic BMW proportions.” And, while we can’t quite understand why ICEs restricted such choices in the past, it’s clear that the Neue Klasse X tries to maintain the lower beltline and shark-nosed aesthetic that impressed us when we first saw the new stylistic direction. That said, it translates less convincingly into an SUV (or SAV, sports activity vehicle as BMW calls it) than the sedan did, but nevertheless, the inclusion of the panoramic sunroof and very low beltline makes it look like an airy and future-forward experience.

The shape is also 20 percent more aerodynamic than the outgoing X models, while new tire and brake designs are quoted as contributing towards a 25 percent increase in efficiency. The rear features distinctive taillights, following on from the Neue Klasse sedan which included 3D-printed units spread over several levels in a design that showed depth.

Ten Times More Brain Power

Naturally, being a concept, there’s no official word on what kind of drivetrain or range figures the Neue Klasse X will be able to achieve. However, it has been confirmed to utilize BMW ‘s sixth-generation eDrive tech, which promises a 30 percent improvement in range and similar gains in charging speed. Along with round battery cells that are more energy-dense, it’ll ride on an 800-volt architecture for rapid charging capability.

Rather than highlighting the backbone of the technology, the X sheds light on how BMW’s new range of EVs will be controlled, with new chassis and drive units said to offer a superior driving experience tailored to users’ individual needs. BMW has developed four new control units in-house. We say control units, but the company calls them “super brains” because they apparently have up to ten times the computing power. Included are separate “brains” for the powertrain and autonomous driving.

The Neue Klasse X confirms once again the death of the iDrive controller. Instead, steering-wheel-mounted buttons interact with BMW Panoramic Vision and the Central Display. The steering wheel, dubbed the HyPersonX wheel, features a control dedicated to adjusting how the Neue Klasse X “sounds” (i.e., what artificial noises are pumped into the cabin), which can be adjusted on the fly.

Staying inside, the Vision Neue Klasse’s interior incorporates a new plant-based material that has been sustainably developed and is free of petroleum. There’s also plenty of recycled marine plastics to be found too, with discarded fishing nets making up 30 percent of the interior plastic content. Meanwhile, Panoramic Vision takes traditional infotainment a step further. It projects information at a height perfectly matched to the driver across the entire width of the windscreen. In driving situations, the  BMW  3D Head-Up Display displays information such as assisted driving or traffic guidance.

On Sale In 2025

The production version of the Neue Klasse X, which will very likely become the second-generation iX3, will roll out of BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary next year.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that BMW will keep the ICE-powered X3 around for another generation as a separate model from the iX3/Neue Klasse X. The fossil fuel-powered car is expected to go into production in the third quarter of 2024 and has already been spied testing. Unlike the current lineup of X3 and iX3 , the new generations will be better differentiated by virtue of the Neue Klasse platform taking over the underpinning of the new EV, making the two models more distinct from each other.
