What is the weather like in airlie beach.

Airlie Beach is a sub-tropical environment which means fine, mild weather most of the year. There is a wet season over summer which only has occasional showers. Winter in Airlie Beach doesn’t feel like winter at all, with an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius.

It’s possible to sail the Whitsundays at any time of year , with each season offering its unique attractions. 

Do I need a license to charter a boat in the Whitsundays without a skipper?

The need for a license will depend on the type of boat you want to hire and where you want to go. There are several considerations when it comes to a license.

• If you want to take a self-drive boat out to the islands and Whitehaven Beach with Airlie Beach Boat Hire, you need one person to hold a valid boat license – National or International.
• Unlicensed boats can be hired through Airlie Beach Boat Hire to fish and sightsee in designated areas. Please note that if you hire a day boat without a license, you can’t go to the islands.
• If you hire a bareboat from a yacht charter company in the Whitsundays, you do not need a license or sailing qualifications.

Do I need sailing experience to go on a bareboat charter?

We do suggest that one person on your charter has some basic boating knowledge and we are required to have at least two crew members over the age of 18 on each vessel.

Our experienced staff will support you all the way, helping plan your itinerary, giving you a comprehensive briefing on how to operate your vessel and staying in regular contact over VHF radio.

If you are feeling unsure about your sailing experience or your ability to handle a boat, you can hire a sail guide for an hourly or daily rate to make sure you’re confident with skippering the boat yourself.

We also run the Whitsunday School of Sailing , which is an option for anyone wanting to brush up on their sailing knowledge or learn the basics before a charter.

How do I know what bareboat to hire?

The vessels in our fleet can accommodate up to 10 guests. You can choose a sailing yacht , a catamaran or a motor cruiser. The boat you hire will depend on your budget, availability and how many people you need to accommodate.  

To help you decide between a catamaran or sailing yacht, we’ve completed a list of pros and cons. Most families and large groups who charter in the Whitsundays opt for a catamaran.

Where can I go on a bareboat around the Whitsundays?

There are 74 Islands within the Whitsundays group with more than 40 anchorages. You’ll be able to visit secluded islands away from day crowds as well as all the Whitsunday highlights such as Whitehaven, the Hamilton Island marina and our top snorkelling sites.

Where you go will be determined by the weather and the things you want to do. We have created these suggested itineraries , however, please chat with your briefer to help customise a trip on the day you set sail.

Welcome to the Whitsundays, Airlie Beach the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. If you are looking to explore the beautiful Whitsunday Islands, on your own time, we can provide a number of different options for you. Snorkelling, swimming, diving or just relaxing in the beautiful azure waters. All our boats are located at our floating office at Coral Sea Marina – Resort, South Village – Berth N00.

OUR LICENSED BOATS Our self-hire and drive Centre Cab, Sportrider and Yellowfin can get you out to all the islands and Whitehaven Beach. All you need is a valid Boat Licence – National or International. Our Kakadu Tinny and Smartwave Xtra, on a low wind day can take you to the South and North Molle Islands, around Daydream and to Long Island. The Tinny and Smartwave Xtra cannot get to the big islands of Whitehaven Beach.

OUR UNLICENSED BOATS Our Poly Boats are for our customers that don’t have a boat license and want to get out on the water to fish and sightsee with turtles and dugongs ever present in the Bay off Airlie Beach. These boats do have a restricted area and can not get to the islands.

GBRMPA Changes

As of 1st July 2023, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) is reinstating their Environmental Management Charge (EMC). All bookings on the Yellowfin 6.5 Hardtop & McLay 651 Crossxover will incur a fee of $7 per person (people aged 4 and over) per day, for the first three (3) days of the booking. This fee will manually be added onto your booking, and final numbers will be confirmed the day before your booking.

All fees for this are passed directly onto the GBRMPA for management of the reef.

From 1st April 2024, the fee will increase to $8 per person.

“Our journey across to Hayman island and the wind protected northern anchorages of Hook island started at 730am and took 45mins @ 15-20 knots in the 5.7M Sportsrider. Within the main passage we had minor to moderate spray/bumps etc for 25 mins in a 15-20 km/h south easterly and outgoing tide.

Coming back mid-afternoon with the wind SE and stronger at 25-35 km/hr and tide incoming, we trimmed the nose up higher to minimise the spray and made way @ 8-10 knots….it was rough and wet for 35 mins across the main passage but worth every minute of that after the 6 lovely hours of scenery, fishing and relaxation we’d just spent enjoying over there out of the wind and waves!

We came prepared to get a bit damp and uncomfortable on our journey to see and experience something we knew was going to be really quite special.

We then went home super happy we’d made that effort.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Skippered Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat hire or yacht charter in Airlie Beach you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht hire or skippered yacht charter.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases skippers will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Airlie Beach

If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Airlie Beach. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Airlie Beach, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The 74 Whitsunday Islands lie between the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef, a massive stretch of coral teeming with marine life. Most of the islands are uninhabited. They're characterized by dense rainforest, hiking trails and white sand beaches. The town of Airlie Beach on the mainland is the region's central hub.

This boat is purpose built for fishing and diving with a large amount of deck space with a large shade cover.

A1 Boat hire Airlie beach is a great way to explore the Whitsunday at your Own leisure, if you want to get out and see the islands and the beautiful beaches or go for a dive and sea the beautiful reefs and fish around the islands or just go for a fish, 

A1 Boat hire is the way to go, if it's a bit windy to get out amongst the islands you may like to go for a look up Proserpine River for a look at the crocks and catch some mud crabs or fish for a barramundi up at lake Proserpine.

Only holders of a  current qld boat licence   (or other states equivalent power boat license) can drive the boat.

Before taking out the Centre Cab boat our skipper’s briefing will make sure your day on the water is a safe one.

A lifejacket must be always worn by all persons. Safety equipment and procedures are provided in the safety equipment container. This contains a v-sheet, whistle, fire extinguisher, torch, first aid kit, and other useful equipment, as well as a handy reference guide for operating and emergency procedures.

Quick Summary of the Hire Terms and Conditions

The boat rental terms and conditions include fuel charges, confirmation procedures, licensing requirements, safety precautions, weather restrictions, liability responsibilities, cancellation policies, and limitations on the number of passengers and activities allowed.

Fuel is an additional cost charged at Coral Sea Marina’s browser price. The hirer must pay for fuel used, and if the amount exceeds the $250 deposit, they will be either refunded or charged accordingly. E10 fuel is not allowed, and the hirer will be responsible for removal costs if used.

Airlie Boat Hire contacts the hirer a day prior to confirm details and collect any outstanding balance. Valid national or international boat licenses are required for licensed boats. The minimum age for a hirer is 18 years old, with children under 12 counting as one passenger.

Cancellation is allowed up to 48 hours prior to booking with a full refund. Rental fees include insurance coverage while onboard the vessel but do not cover personal belongings.
