Catana Catamarans

Catana began building catamarans in 1984 and is now based in Canet-en-Roussillon, France. This article covers the history of this famous multihull yard. If you are looking for 2nd hand boats, check out our Catana Catamaran for Sale page.

Crowther’s Cats

In their early years, they became the world leader in fast-performance cruising catamarans helped by legendary Australian multihull designer Lock Crowther. Following the Crowther era, Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman continued the success with a series of designs that remain popular to this day.

Like Nautitech catamarans , they favour a more exposed helm position aft for maximum sailing feel – the sporty helm, if you like. Although the latest model (the Ocean Class 50) has a raised starboard helm.

The two original partners of Catana (Jean-Pierre Prade and Thierry Goyard) employed Lock Crowther to design a range of models from 38′ to 48′. The two directors (Goyard and Prade), both engineers, sailed for several years on multihulls,  including a round trip to Greenland, on a Lock Crowther design of course.

Later, a young architect called Christophe Barreau started working with Lockie on the deck & interior designs sometime between 1984 and the 411 which was credited to both men.

From Cogolin to Canet en Roussillon From 1984 to 1993, the Catana yard in Cogolin built around 5 to 7 boats per year. In 1986 they started using  Twaron for the inner skin of the shell.

Catana moved to Canet en Roussillon back in 1998 and the company was sold in 2000 to a group of investors. Prade left the boat business, but some years later Goyard opened XL Catamarans, also in Canet, selling high-performance catamarans (TS50/TS52) designed by Barreau.

The Marsaudon Connection Before shutting up shop at XL Catamarans, Goyard commissioned Barreau to design the TS42 now built by Marsaudon Composites in Laurent and one of the fastest performance cruising cats on the water.  Marsaudon had collaborated with Catana previously on the 521/522- they built a dozen of them under contract.

Barreau’s Boats Hull #1 of the C411 (now Pelagic) was the first model credited to Barreau, but Crowther´s name also pops up on this design. Maybe Crowther was retained as a consultant with Barreau taking the lead?

catana 70

Barreau kept up and developed the design DNS of his former mentor with asymmetrical hulls, tulip-shaped bows, a narrow waterline, and daggerboards for upwind sailing.

Lombard Advises Lately, Catana has set up an in-house design studio and worked with the Marc Lombard Group as a consultant (another of my favourite multihull design teams and known for its Nautitech, Neel and Privilege designs).

Lombard is credited with designing the Catana 70, after which they brought the designs in-house, but you can still spot his influence in the shapes of the hulls.

Carbon Infusion Technology Catana remains a world specialist in fast cruising catamarans ranging from 42 to 90 feet, all designed for long-distance cruising and continues to be unique in that it builds boats using advanced Carbon-Infusion and Twaron processes.

The hulls, bulkheads, deck and furniture are all built in foam-cored sandwich, which make Catana Catamarans light and fast. Recent models have veered away from the super fast, light cats of their early years (Marsaudon have moved into this space).

Performance and Safety Catana focuses on producing fast, comfortable ocean crossers. Their yachts are well above average on the performance front, though not as quick as others in lighter winds. It’s a segment of the market that is getting more competitive: HH for example has launched its OC50 catamaran which sits in this space.

The latest launch is the Ocean Class, a 52-footer that launched in 2020 with a single raised bulkhead helm.

(Sorted by Year)

Catana 40, 40S (1984-92)

Catana 40

The Catana 40 was the very first model launched in 1984 when Catana was based in Cogolin in the South of France.

catamaran catana 40

Hull #1 was called “Pêcheur de Lune”: the first owners registered her on 25th July 1985 in Toulon. In 2019, she was restored by Alberto Machado and renamed “Oceanus”

Catana 40 Oceanus

There are 2 versions, the 40C (11 built? Hull #11 was launched in 1988) and the 40S. The plate above is from a 40S (Hull #15, 1995).

Fast Cat This cat is quick! She weighs only 5.8 tonnes, meaning she sails well even in light winds.  The bridgedeck was high for the time, so there was less slamming compared to the cruising cats of the time such as the Prout range.

And upwind, with her fine hulls and daggerboards, she was a real performer.

There’s not much space on her compared to modern cats, but the owners didn’t care as they were flying along.

Even so, she came with 4 double cabins- the limited space was well thought out: an excellent design that is very rare on the second-hand market.

Later Came the 40S The later 40S was built with a C39 deck mold and a 42 cockpit mold spliced together. An example is “Avighna” (1992) Hull #16.

The 40S has a narrower beam than the original 40C models which became the 42.

Catana 42S (1988?)

catamaran catana 40

Another Lock Crowther creation, the Catana 42S was slightly longer and sleeker than the original 40C developed from the same molds I believe. A lovely looking catamaran, especially from this angle. Around 20 were made.

An example is “ Paikea “, a 1990 42S.

Catana 37 (1989)

The smallest Catana, but pretty rare…

Catana 39 (1988)

Another example is Tigre, a Catana 39S, hull #4.

Catana 39 Boat Tour

Catana 44 (1992)

Catana 44

Another popular Lock Crowther design from Catana´s early days. Evolved from the 42. A new wider hull mold was made using the same deck mold and that became the 44.

The 44 design was later lengthened and became the 48.

An example is S/V Pacific Hoodlum #10 (1994), a Catana 44S

Catana 48 (1992)

catamaran catana 40

The 48 is probably the most sought-after of Lock Crowther’s early Catana designs. She has a much lower bridge deck than more modern Catanas but had a high power-to-weight ratio – she’s a fast cat.

The Catana 48 is a modified 44 with transom extensions and a bigger rig.

They also built two Catana 48Rs (Racing) which were stretched 42s and different from the standard 48s.

There were only 8 48s produced. I am not sure whether this number includes the 48Rs. Hull #8 was launched in 1996.

Catana 411 (1994)

catamaran catana 40

The 411 design was credited to both Lock Crowther and Barreau. Shown is Pelagic, the #1 hull. The deck mold was hand-built and the boat was transported to the Paris Boat Show where it had to be sold to keep Catana afloat.

There were 29 411s built. Hull #29 (Darbrook) was built in 1999

catana 411 hull 29 darbrook

Catana 381 (1995)

catamaran catana 40

This is a quirky cat and Catana’s smallest. The big story is the aft central helm. I love it. They don’t make them like this anymore! I believe this model went up to hull #23.

Catana 531 (1996)

catana 531

A Real Looker A large, powerful catamaran from Catana’s earlier days (90s). These boats remind me a bit of the early Lagoons – they are sleek. Nice looking cats.

Catana 471 (1997), 47 Ocean Class (2003)

catamaran catana 40

With the launch of the 471, the Barreau/Neuman design partnership started to motor. This is one of my favourite Catana designs, they nailed it with this one. an example is “Our White Magic” (2002). Hull #45.

Another example is S/V Scenic Route #64

The last Catana 471 hull (#68) named “Element” was delivered in May of 2003. Then this model was marketed as the 47 Ocean Class until 2007.

Read our full Catana 471 review.

Catana 611 (1997)

Catana 431, 432 (1998),.

43 Ocean Class ( from 2003)

catamaran catana 40

Launched as a kind of ‘mini 471’, the 431 shares many of the same design characteristics as the bigger boat. The Barreau Neuman team was finding their feet with these designs. A great balance between performance and comfort.

catamaran catana 40

431 hull #54 Papillon, for example, was delivered in June 2003 with an Alucarbon mast. Other examples are S/V Icaros #48 (2002) and Rizkitt #10 (1999).

After the purchase of Catana by Poncin in 2003, this model was sold as the 43 Ocean Class.

Catana 721 (1998)

Catana 401 (1999).

catamaran catana 40

The Catana 401 replaced the 381 and 411. These are very popular boats. The 401 was an updated 381 with a new cockpit mold from the cockpit bulkhead aft.

When Catana stopped production of the 401, they sold the molds to Phisa, which lengthened them and made some other changes and sold it as the Phisa 42. Worth a look, as the interior finish was upgraded on the Phisa.

Catana 472 (2000)

catamaran catana 40

The 472 is a higher-spec version of the 471. Shown above is “El Gato”. Aesthetically, Catana hit top marks with these boats

Catana Aikane 56 (2000)

This 56-footer was designed by VPLP

Catana 581/582 (2000/2001)

catamaran catana 40

Incorporating all of the design features that made these Christophe Barreau Catanas so sought after. This is a high-end performance cruising catamaran with narrow hulls, a high bridgedeck clearance, minimal weight forward of the mast, and high-aspect daggerboards instead of low-aspect keels.

You will struggle to find a better long-distance blue water cruiser than this boat.

Catana 521, 522 (2002)

catamaran catana 40

Another Barreau/Neuman design from their “Purple Patch” years. If you are looking for a bigger version of the legendary 471, this is it. Marsaudon built a dozen of these fast cats under contract. They look like they could weather a storm, don´t they?

The Marsaudon Connection The last one was built in 2005: “Chaton”- this is a very fast boat with a carbon mast, that averages between 220 and 240 miles on longer passages: a true luxury performance cat. Another example is “O2” which was built by Dominique Marsaudon in Lorient in 2003.

Catana 50 (2006)

catamaran catana 40

Catana went through some financial difficulties after the dot com crash in the early noughties, but they came roaring back with the Catana 50. This cat was well received thanks to its stable ride through the waves. The defining feature was that bulbous bow: a wave-piercing profile that minimised hobby-horsing and provided extra buoyancy.

The Catana 50’s boards are angled slightly inward to maximize lift under sail- she performs well upwind.

Catana 41 Ocean Class (2008)

catamaran catana 40

This is very similar to the newer 42. The saloon layout is different from the later boat with the galley port forward.

Catana 65 (2008)

catamaran catana 40

The 65 was one of the last Christophe Barreau designs for Catana. They were making some big catamarans at this point.

Catana 90 (2008)

catamaran catana 40

The largest yacht that the shipyard has constructed is the Catana 90, like the example above, Orion. This is a sleek looker despite its length.

Catana 42 (2010)

catana 42

The 42 is an updated version of the 41 that was launched 2 years earlier. The galley was moved to the aft of the salon and they improved some of the sail handling. Then they renamed her the 42, maybe in honour of that great early Lock Crowther design?

Catana 42 Brochure

Catana 82 (2010)

catamaran catana 40

Launched from Catana´s large yachts division that was set up in 2006. The 82 is not the prettiest in the range (in my opinion, I am sure the owner would disagree). For me, it looks like they just stretched the smaller boats.

Catana 47 (2011)

catamaran catana 40

The 47 is no longer part of Catana’s current line-up. We were hoping for her to get the new look like the 53, but the yard has moved direction to the newer Ocean Class range with a bulkhead helm. They seem to be moving more towards the comfort end of the spectrum, probably influenced by the success of the Bali range.

She is a very solid, seaworthy catamaran that is infused with carbon, and evolved from the 471 but doesn’t look as pretty.

Read our full Catana 47 review in the performance catamarans section.

Catana 59 (2011)

catamaran catana 40

In 2013, the Catana 59 was designed by Catana’s in-house team with Marc Lombard retained as a consultant, and it caused something of a stir, as the 47 and 42-foot models were the only remaining Christophe Barreau designs.

The design philosophy later extended to the 53 and a modernised stretched version: the 62.

She has lovely lines: a high freeboard, good bridge deck clearance, and a generous sail plan. The new muscly look is an indicator of this cat’s performance.

Catana 70 (2012)

catamaran catana 40

A very sleek design for such a large yacht, the 70 was designed by Marc Lombard. After this, Catana brought the design in-house, but you can still see Lombard’s influence in the later designs such as the 53. He was retained as a consultant.

Catana 70 Brochure

Catana 62 (2016)

Catana 62

The big sister to the 53, the 62 evolved from the earlier 59.

With its maxi hulls with inverted bows, foil-type daggerboards, Carbon Infusion and Twaron Impact technology, the C62 is one of the safest catamarans in its class.

Catana 53 (2017)

catamaran catana 40

The 53 is the only remaining model in Catana’s current line-up apart from the Ocean Class. The living space is huge thanks to those twin aft helms and the Open design between the saloon and cockpit. Read our Catana 53 review in the performance cats section.

Catana 53 Brochure

We also have an Owner’s Review on this cat which is well worth a read. Thanks to Rowan on PolePole.

Ocean Class (2022)

catana ocean class catamaran

The new Ocean Class is a 52-footer. This design is quite a departure for Catana as she has a single raised bulkhead helm. She’s a solid-looking design.

Catana Ocean Class Brochure

We first saw this model at La Grande Motte in 2022. Read our Catana Ocean Class review .

When I was a wee lad of sixteen, I landed as an exchange student in Bairnsdale, Australia. It turned out that Bairnsdale was the home of Lock Crowther - a pioneering designer in the multihull renaissance that was soon to sweep the world. The locals at the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club were aghast about these new-fangled catamarans that were winning all of the races. I kept quiet (as I was a guest aboard a stately monohull), but I was bitten by the multihull bug the moment I saw a Crowther cat glide effortlessly by. They seemed like a better idea to me - and they have proven it time and time again! Lock Crowther designed amazing catamarans. His designs were so forward-thinking that they even impressed the French and he went on to become the preeminent designer for Catana Catamarans.

I'm jealous of those who can own and sail Crowther's Catana 40. I'm no longer a wee lad (think NFL lineman instead) and I just don't fit within their sleek lines! You can think of the Catana 40 as the Bathtub Porsche of catamarans. it is a joy to be behind the wheel if you can find one and fit. They are true classics that have windswept lines coupled with tremendously easily-driven hulls. They are light and strong and they are fast. They handle seakeeping as if born to it. Crowther's designs point with the best due to their deep daggerboards and dampen a head sea with graceful tulip bows. The Catana 40 is easy on the pocketbook too. Alas, just like the Porsche 356 I drove in my youth, these are a slender man's roadster for traversing the islands. This one is recently refit (see all of the 2022 upgrades in the specifications) and perched in the sailor's paradise of French Polynesia receiving its finishing touches. If you are lean and limber and have a hankering to start exploring the South Pacific in style, you need to call Matthew and discuss this Catana!

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Presentation of the group

CATANA GROUP enjoys the benefit of nearly 40 years of experience in the design and manufacture of CATANA CATAMARANS and BALI CATAMARANS. The men and women of CATANA GROUP all share the same passion for the sea, for technology at the service of boating, and for the professions of the boatbuilding world. The passion for top-of-the-range yachting is the driving force behind the group, which, combined with know-how and a constant strive for quality, has led to the creation of an unrivalled industrial tool at the service of innovation.

A SOLID GROUP

CATANA GROUP is a group totally focused on the manufacture and sale of catamarans. With 4 production sites (Three in France, one in Tunisia and one in Portugal) as well as a service base, the Group today employs more than 1,300 people, all of whom are united around the company's project. With strong growth since 2014, and constantly seeking innovative and eco-responsible concepts, CATANA GROUP has one of the best profitability rates in its sector and a very solid financial structure.

In 2003, Olivier Poncin sensed the demand for catamaran boats and took an interest in the legendary Catana brand, which went on to buy. A few years later, he realised that the “blue water” catamaran market was too small and did not provide the desired financial visibility. The decision was taken to attack the most significant part of the sailing multihull market, in the face of significant and legitimate competition. To meet the challenge, Olivier Poncin's solution was to innovate in an audacious manner. He imagined disruptive concepts that revolutionised the codes of sailing: a common space between the saloon and the aft cockpit, a tilting door and an integrated foredeck. In September 2014, the first BALI CATAMARAN was launched, the BALI 4.5, followed just a few weeks later by the BALI 4.3. Today, the Catana-BALI Catamarans shipyard builds over 300 boats a year. The gamble has paid off, the concept has gained worldwide legitimacy and meets the needs of a very large section of the clientele.

CATANA CATAMARANS

The CATANA brand benefit from 40 years of experience. Known for their reliability and performance, CATANA’s boats are perfectly balanced, fast and light in weight, ensuring low drag. Their slender, inverted bows allow them to achieve even higher speeds. The interior is fitted out with equipment designed for lightness: the ultimate in comfort and energy savings. With exceptional safety, CATANA CATAMARANS are easy to handle and their high-end level of comfort will carry you to all the seas of the world. Everything you need for fast and sustainable sailing across the oceans.

BALI CATAMARANS

BALI Catamarans offers an innovative, unique concept that has revolutionised the world of catamarans. Thanks to the pivoting aft door and the rigid foredeck platform, BALI Catamarans embody openness: openness to life, openness to the four elements and the five senses. The large windows and the door to the forward cockpit offer a natural 360° panorama. Space is given utmost importance at BALI Catamarans: the forward cockpit and the increased area (achieved by the BALI door) are key assets that distinguish BALI among all the players in the market. At a glance, a BALI is instantly recognisable among its peers.

THE PRODUCTION SITES

Today, Catana Group counts 1,300 employees working on four boat production sites based in Canet-en-Roussillon in the South of France, the company's historic headquarters; in Marans, near La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast; and in El Haouaria (Cap Bon, Tunisia) and in Portugal. The Group is also equipped with an industrial joinery shop in Rivesaltes (on the Mediterranean coast), which allows the Group to be fully self-sufficient in the manufacture of its furniture. The Group also has a “Services” base, Port Pin Rolland, located in the marina at Saint Mandrier, near Toulon, also in the South of France.

An international presence

The CATANA Group's brands are present on every continent through sales and a network of dealers recognised for their professionalism. As representatives of our models, they carry the colours of our brands high on all the seas of the world, meeting all the needs of our customers in each market. CATANA WEBSITE BALI WEBSITE -->

Catana Ocean Class - New catamaran, new generation…

The Ocean Class promises daily runs of 200 to 240 miles – that’ll shorten your crossings!

A single helm station, but two deep daggerboards and the double mainsheet purchase- the Ocean Class is indeed a Catana!

The Catana OC features a combined maneuvering and steering station to starboard. While most Catanas have had a helm on either hull for over 30 years, the first model - the Catana 40 - had a wheel against the back of the coachroof, as shown in this image

“Finally!” That was the first word out of the editor’s mouth when the news broke just over a year ago. Unveiled at the International Multihull Show, the Ocean Class inaugurates a new Catana range. We were able to discover this fast-cruising catamaran a few weeks later - to our great delight!

Test location: Canet-en-Roussillon, France Conditions: 15 knots of wind, slight to moderate sea state

It’s been six years now since the last Catana, the 53, was launched... And for a few years, the range has been limited to this one single (albeit very successful) model. But to be honest, the length of this period with no new Catana models probably feels much greater for any fans of serious cruising – and that includes us of course. Let’s not forget that in the meantime, the Bali brand has multiplied its new models, leading some to fear that the Catana name, although at the origin of the group, might become the collateral damage victim of the success of its youngest offspring. In the end, this isn’t the case. It was only the time needed for the historic brand to reinvent itself and find the time to do so. Ultimately, as you can see, we’re in no way denying the pleasure of sailing aboard this Catana with its enhanced DNA. It’s all about sharing the experience with you.

On the program: fast, blue water multihull cruising

It’s rare thing in the marine industry that the name of a model is not associated with its length, either in feet (most often) or in meters. But there is no ris...

40ft Catamaran Models Comparisons

We compare specifications, dimensions, sail area, and pricing on the most popular 40ft catamarans in 2020.

Since 2016, Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, Leopard, Bali, and Nautitech all rolled out new 40 ft catamaran models in a similar price range that are innovative, spacious, well-built, and comfortable. The latest model to be added to this 40ft array in 2020 is the Bali Catspace.

Bali has done away with the Bali 4.1 model and has designed the Bali Catspace with much improved and innovative features while Lagoon updated their popular L400 and redesigned it with the mast further back to accommodate a self-tacking jib, open scoops, and updated interior. The FP Lucia 40, released in 2016, has pretty much stayed the same, as has the Leopard 40. They are both very popular and successful cats. While the Nautitech Open 40 is a nice sporty sailing cat, it has not really taken hold in the US market with the aft helm stations.

These 40ft catamaran models are affordable and easily be handled by a coupled. It also has all the amenities suitable for a cruising boat such as an ice maker, washing machine, bigger fridge/freezer capacity, and big living spaces, which is very attractive for live-aboard cruising couples.

The 40ft catamaran holds its value because it is in high demand on the used boat market. The 40ft catamaran size range just makes sense.

Read our previous 40ft comparison article for older models:  How Do The Most Popular 40-ft Production Catamarans Compare?

New 2020 40Ft Catamaran Comparison

The five main production catamaran contenders in 2020 for liveaboard couples are:

  • BALI Catspace
  • FP Lucia 40
  • Nautitech 40 Open

40ft Catamaran Models Specifications

40ft catamaran deck & flybridge layout comparison, 40ft catamaran deck & flybridge layout comparisons, 40ft catamaran models sail plan comparisons, 40ft catamaran cabin layouts comparisons, 3-cabin layout, 4-cabin layout, reader's question answered: andy asked: "which cat is the best value and what do you budget for upgrades that deliver an above average sailing and comfort experience" .

The pricing for the different brands are generally in the same range since this a competitive space and the manufacturers have to make sure they are not priced out of the market. There are essentially no “bad catamarans”. Most are all built to recognized and enforced codes such as the European CE standard, so it comes down to personal preference. Some boats have Balsa cores and others have closed cell foam cores. Some have large nets, others have small nets and some have no nets.

All the forward deck designs are acceptable and safe, as we have now conclusively seen over the last five years. The current trend is smaller nets and larger foredeck areas for the most part on cruising cats. Performance cats all have nets and longer bows and are a different category to the production cruisers. Lagoon has the biggest living space, Bali has the best live-ability overall and FP and Leopard are very popular for couples with the semi-raised helm position but that too is a personal preference.

In terms of the extras or additional options, I normally recommend the following:

  • The largest engine option available – this is important for your exit strategy especially in the US market and of course it is nice to have the extra power since the modern cats have quite a lot of windage.
  • The best winch pack available
  • All the cleats offered
  • Mostly it is smart to take the code zero pack even if you do not order the sail immediately (Difficult and expensive to retro fit)
  • Folding props – I really think that if you are going to do any extended cruising the last thing you want is to be dragging fixed props
  • Air Conditioning if you want to have it
  • Generator unless you are going to go Lithium with all the inverters and electronics to replace the generator.
  • Solar – I normally take the factory option and then add aftermarket to increase the array
  • If possible cable throttles and not electronic (If you are struck by lightning at least you can still control the engines if they still run)
  • Electrically assisted davits at a minimum – your dinghy is your “car” so one needs to have an efficient handling system (we raise our dinghy every night for security)
  • Watermaker is fantastic to have. It really makes life so much easier.
  • Estelle will definitely opt for the washing machine – we never had one but since she’s had it onboard our Lagoon 450, she will not go without again.

Fabulous article and great comparisons, thank you. How do they sail? Is there any real difference?

HI Chrissy thank you! The performance of the boats are all very similar. They are all cruising cats, so not exactly rocket ships but totally adequate for a an average cruising couple. You could get a little more performance out of any of these boats depending on how aggressively you sail the boat and the type of sails you have. We race our boat and almost always end up in the top three boats.

Thank you for your article, I think we will go for the Catspace

Your welcome! I think you will be very happy with this choice. Only recommendation for any of these models, is upgrade the engines to 40hp.

In your opinion, which Cat is the the best value and what would you budget for upgrades that deliver an above average sailing and comfort experience? Obviously upgrades can be all over the map but you mentioned upgrading engine to 40hp – what else do you feel are almost ‘required’ upgrades? Thanks!

The pricing for the different brands are generally in the same range since this a competitive space and the manufacturers have to make sure they are not priced out of the market. There are essentially no bad catamarans, most are all built to recognized and enforced codes such as CE so it comes down to personal preference. Some boats have Balsa cores and other have closed cell foam cores, others have large nets, some have small nets and some have no nets, all designs are acceptable as we have now conclusively seen over the last five years. The trend is to smaller nets and larger foredeck areas for the most part. Performance boats all have nets and longer bows and are a different category to the production cruisers. Lagoon is good bang for your buck, Bali has the best liveability and space overall and FP and Leopard are very popular for couples because of the helm position.

In terms of the extras or additional options I normally recommend the following: The largest engine option available – this is important for your exit strategy especially in the US market and of course it is nice to have the extra power since the modern cats have quite a bot of windage. the best winch pack available All the cleats offered Mostly it is smart to take the code zero pack even if you do not order the sail immediately (Difficult and expensive to retro fit) Folding props – I really think that if you are going to do any extended cruising the last thing you want is to be dragging fixed props Air Conditioning if you want to have it Generator unless you are going to go Lithium with all the inverters and electronics to replace the generator. Solar – I normally take the factory option and then add aftermarket to increase the array If possible cable throttles and not electronic (If you are struck by lightning at least you can still control the engines if they still run) Electrically assisted davits at a minimum – your dinghy is your car so one needs to have an efficient handling system (we raise our dinghy every night for security) Watermaker is fantastic to have. It really makes life so much easier. Estelle will definitely opt for the washing machine – we never had one but since she’s ahd it onboard our Lagoon 450, she will not go without again.

This is a big subject and there are many opinions, I would be happy to discuss further -Stephen

We have a 2020 Leopard 40 Owners version. We love it. Just wish it carried a bit more fuel.

Hi Eugene, yes! The Leopards are very popular and we sell many of them. They are definitely a great bang for your buck. Thank you for your input!

The 40 Open has the longest WL, Largest Sail Area and has the lightest displacement… indicating it ‘should’ sail better than the others. Other than the helm position, what are the other differences (drawbacks?) you have observed or can comment on (if any)? It appears to be trying to straddle the ‘performance / cruiser’ designation… would you say it is successful?

Doug, yes you are correct however it is a displacement hull, just like the other cats in this category and while it may be a little lighter and have a bigger sailplan, it sails marginally faster, so that is not too much of a factor. In general they are nice boats but the living space is small and just like the new Excess range from Lagoon, the biggest drawback of these cats in our market is the helm position. The aft helm station have just never caught on, which is the reason that Catana and Outremer also moved their helm stations to the bulkhead rather than on the sterns.

SUNREEF 88 DOUBLE DECK: A catamaran designed for ultimate comfort!

680 m² of canvas downwind, 460 m² upwind, the Sunreef 88 DD is a real sailboat making 7 knots in just 10 knots of wind

The 88 DD is an imposing catamaran with an air draft of over 40 meters... Welcome to the outsized world of superyachts!

The sheer of the deck makes it possible to house a jet-ski on the sidedeck while maintaining good headroom in the cabins...

On the flybridge, behind the helm station, you find all the indispensable features for relaxation: sunbathing, barbecue, bar and a magnificent 35m² of space

The helm station located on the flybridge allows for handling everything on the entire cat while offering an ideal view of the water.

The aft cockpit encircled by loungers is very large. The skipper's cabin is hidden under the bench seat of the big table. Beneath the stairway, there is access to the day toilets without having to go through the interior of the boat

The Sunreef 88 DD hasn’t forgotten any of the rules of super-yachting. Attention to detail and refinement is everywhere on board, making life enjoyable

The cockpit interior offers a good view forward across the water. From here, you can handle the boat while staying warm during night watches.

The owner's cabin occupies the entire forward part of the coachroof and offers a 180° panoramic view. It has a large bench seat / bunk bed for when the children want to join their parents, and the bathroom is located in the hull. Superb!

The galley is professionally equipped and offers really impressive storage space. A wine cellar and large freezers find their place in the cargo hold under the floor

The guest cabins are just as beautiful

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.

catamaran boat double decker

A good average speed to cross the Atlantic or to reach new anchorages in the Caribbean islands after a beautiful summer season in the Mediterranean also guided their choice.  It simply remained to find a shipyard capable of satisfying the wishes of the owner.  With a budget of more than 4 million euros, this owner was looking for a boat that was not just ultra-equipped and of the highest quality, but a unit that was entirely made ...

DISCOVER THE MODEL

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

catamaran boat double decker

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. Don’t miss out on your own little piece of paradise.

A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

A seafaring adventure on Island Routes double-decker catamaran cruise

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise They suggested the Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise. They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

Dek Kat Boats Logo

DEK KAT 2680

Dek kat 2680 model.

Meet the new standard in nearshore and offshore coastal high-performance catamaran deck boats. With it’s revolutionary twin tunnel hull design, the Dek Kat 2680 is changing the game for inshore fishing by providing a large, stable fishing platform without sacrificing creature comfort options for the family.

BETTER FEATURES

With ample in deck storage, minimal bow rise on acceleration coupled with a shallow water draft of approximately 12”, the Dek Kat is fast becoming an in-shore guide favorite. At 26’ 2” inches long with a beam of 8’6” there is no other bay boat on the market that comes close to her deck space. The twin tunnels provide a stable and comfortable ride even when the weather is not fully cooperative.

If live bait fishing is your game, the 2680 comes standard with two large in deck live/release wells with the option for additional live wells above deck in the forward seating or in our custom leaning post configuration.

MORE COMFORT

The Dek Kat 2680 is a semi-custom built boat which is just as comfortable on the bay waters chasing trout and redfish as it is at the sand bar with your family. Our oversized hard tops keep the family comfortable with the shade and you will find an abundance of seating throughout the boat, including our custom Adirondack style seat built into the console. Built for fishing and comfort cruising, the Dek Kat is truly one of the most versatile bay boat designs out there. It is ready for whatever your weekend desires are upon the water.

Savor Bonaire's breathtaking seascapes from the Sea Breeze double-decker power catamaran .

You'll stop at the famous pink salt flats and white mountains of salt. Your guide will explain the salt production process.

Offshore from the historical white slave huts, learn some Caribbean facts and discover why these centuries-old huts are built next to the sea.

The catamaran approaches the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire by way of the famous Bonaire Marine Park . Its protected reef makes it a divers' paradise. From up close, you will see Bonaire's most attractive white-sand beach. Its name, of course, is No-Name Beach.

Follow the coastline for exceptional panoramic views, and don't forget to look down into the crystal-clear turquoise water. Oceanfront hotels and restaurants and beautiful Dutch Caribbean mansions line the way back to the port.

It’s better to build a patio when:

  • Privacy is a priority: Patio provides a sense of privacy, especially when enclosed.
  • Budget and low maintenance are the priority: Patios are generally more cost-effective to build and require less maintenance.
  • The ground is flat: For even ground, constructing a patio is easier and more straightforward.

It’s better to build a deck when:

  • Scenic views are desired: Decks offer better views.
  • You are fine with obtaining building permits and inspections: Decks typically require permits and inspections due to their structural impact on the home.
  • The ground is uneven: If your backyard has slopes or uneven terrain, a deck can provide a stable and level outdoor space.

Brand: Catana 401

catamaran catana 40

The Catana 401 was introduced in 2000 and replaced the Catana 381 and 411 models. Sail Magazine named the Catana 401 as their Sail Top 10 in 2001. Design features include asymmetrical hulls, tulip shaped bows, dagger boards and extremely high bridge deck clearance for her length. Like all of Catana’s current models, the Catana 401’s innovations include total mainsail management from the safety of the cockpit via a two-speed electric winch, wide clean flat decks with all sail control lines lead aft under the deck and no hatches to trip over. Catana’s “ocean view” port lights provide excellent ventilation while at anchor.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

catamaran catana 40

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
