Cruising to Bimini

  • By Kristin Baird Rattini
  • November 2, 2023

Bimini shipwreck

As the closest Bahamian port to the United States, Bimini is an easy and fun weekend run from South Florida for cruisers. And Bimini’s excellent sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving have given this pair of tiny islands an outsize reputation as a popular cruising destination.

Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina

Bimini is known as the sport-fishing capital of the world. Since 1936, this pioneering outfitter in Alice Town on North Bimini has hosted boats that ply the warm waters along the western edge of the Gulf Stream, where charter clients have bagged brag-worthy specimens of bonefish, billfish and tuna over the decades. The resort is just as well known for its dive center, founded in 1975 by Neal Watson, president of the Bahamas Dive Association. The resort’s lively Bimini Seafood Co. & Conch Bar is a popular spot for its weekly theme nights (including Lobster Sundays) and international sporting events on its big screens.

The Sapona Wreck

If only the weather-worn walls of the SS Sapona could talk. This wreck that’s now a navigational landmark for cruisers and a popular fishing, diving and snorkeling destination had originally been destined to serve as a cargo vessel during World War I, but its production ran longer than the war did. A Florida rum runner used the ship briefly as a floating warehouse in Bahamian waters during Prohibition until a hurricane ran it aground in 1926 just a few miles off Bennett’s Harbor in South Bimini. With a maximum depth of only 20 feet, the Sapona appeals to divers and snorkelers of all skill levels who frequently spot barracuda, triggerfish, large lobsters and many other species among the ship’s spooky, rusty remains.  joe’s conch shack There’s a reason there’s usually a line at this small, open-air conch shack between Bailey Town and Resorts World. The freshness and generous portions of the conch salad—usually handmade by Joe himself—make Joe’s Conch Shack a must-stop on any Bimini itinerary. Grab a Kalik beer—especially if you liberally apply the pepper sauce to the conch salad—and enjoy this refreshing island staple along with the harbor views.

Edith’s Pizza & Bahamian Food

Lobster pizza, using the sweet local style of Bimini bread dough for its crust, is the calling card of this island favorite on King’s Highway near Bailey Town. Pick up this distinctive pie for lunch or dinner any day of the week.

Dolphin House Museum

For 30 years, this “poem in stone” has provided a touch of whimsy and artistry in Alice Town. Local author and historian Ashley Saunders assembled this three-story museum from treasures collected on Bimini’s beaches and from recycled materials around the island. Colorful mosaics line the walls, populated by pods of dolphins like the one that first inspired Saunders’ creation. The artist himself is often on-site, providing guided tours to visitors and adding new scenes to his remarkable labor of love.

Review of the Beach Club at Bimini

Posted on Published: 06/19/2023  - Last updated: 10/30/2023

Many of the major cruise lines have their own private islands (e.g.: Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay , Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay ). When Virgin Voyages launched last year, their Caribbean sailings included a stop not at a private island, but at a private, exclusive beach club located on a public island. Virgin Voyages’ The Beach Club at Bimini is a large, private beach club offering pools, beachfront access, and much more.

During my most recent sailing on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady , I was excited to check out the Beach Club at Bimini. Bimini is located off the coast of Miami (about a 2-hour ferry ride away), but our stop there was on the third day of our particular sailing. It does vary by itinerary.

Read more about the Beach Club at Bimini – Virgin Voyages’ private beach club destination. Note that Virgin Voyages is an adult-only cruise line.

The covered at the entrance of the Beach Club at Bimini with red and white umbrellas and palm trees in front of the ocean.

We arrived at the cruise port of Bimini early. After breakfast at the Razzle Dazzle on the Scarlet Lady, we packed up a bag with sunscreen, books, a portable charger , and other beach essentials . Although we also packed beach towels, those were not necessary as there were racks of colorful towels available as we exited the ship.

Before you go, check the Virgin Voyages app for specific details on what documentation you’ll need for the day. This can vary depending on your plans in Bimini. We just needed our band, as well as a photo ID. Purchases at the Beach Club at Bimini can be made with the Band, so cash typically isn’t necessary.

Getting There

Once you exit the ship, you’ll be able to walk down a short pier to get to the trams. The island of Bimini isn’t a private island for Virgin Voyages, so there are other things you’ll be able to do at the island beyond the beach club.

The actual Beach Club at Bimini is private just for the cruise (for the day), and is located at Resorts World Bimini. On days where Virgin Voyages is not in port, the Bimini beach club is used by other cruise lines as well as by Resorts World Bimini .

Once you get on the tram, you’ll be driven to the beach club. It isn’t very walkable, so you’ll want to take the tram even if you are someone who enjoys walking. The tram ride isn’t too long, and there’s also a stop for those going on shore excursions.

If you are on the ship, hoping to see the beach club, you’ll be out of luck. It isn’t visible from the ship, unfortunately.

Once you exit the tram, you’ll be at the entrance of the beach club. From there, you can choose which area to set up for the day – there are lots of options.

I’ve been to the Bahamas many times but hadn’t been to Bimini. I was impressed with how beautiful the island is, with gorgeous light blue water and soft sand. I’d love to return in the future.

Excursions at Bimini

During your day at Bimini, you’ll have a number of excursion options, if you choose. Of course, you don’t have to book anything – you could easily just spend the day at the beach or the pool. Sun loungers and umbrellas are complimentary and there seemed to be many available in a variety of spots.

At the actual beach club, you are able to book various types of cabanas, including lagoon, grove, and beach cabanas (as well as private cabanas dedicated to guests staying in Rockstar Suites). These are smallish cabanas, with different amenities like daybeds and some included drinks. I found the prices to be relatively affordable in comparison with other cruise lines, but they are definitely smaller cabanas.

On my second visit to the Beach Club at Bimini, we rented a cabana by the pool and beach. It included $100 of bar credit and had food and drink service. These are popular, so if you see one available on the app, you should book it as soon as possible.

Because Bimini is not a private island, you’ll have more opportunities for excursions beyond the beach club. These include shark snorkeling, dolphin safari, a mid-afternoon cruise, a historical tour of the island, and a scuba dive.

These official Virgin Voyages excursions, called “Shore Things”, can be booked in advance on the Virgin Voyages website or on the app. I’d recommend doing that as early as possible, because availability may be limited. If you have to go through customs, you may need additional documentation, so make sure you check before you leave the ship.

Timing at Bimini

Unlike other cruise ships, Virgin Voyages is docked at their private destination for the entire day into the evening. So, you don’t have to worry about leaving just as you are having fun. Instead, you’ll be able to stay until around sunset. On our voyage, we had to be on board by 7:30 pm, but this varies by ship and itinerary.

Party at the Beach Club at Bimini

Virgin Voyages is known for its amazing signature dance parties, held each day of your cruise . At Bimini, the party is a pool float party, which takes place in the middle of the day. There are also other activities, including morning yoga, as well as a pool DJ playing music throughout the afternoon. In the evening, you can watch as the fireballs and a beach bonfire are lit on the beach.

light blue water along a sandy beach at Bimini

Beach at Bimini

Speaking of the beach – Bimini has a gorgeous one, with beautiful blue water and a beautiful white sand beach. It is more northern than popular Caribbean islands, so the water can be cooler in the winter months. During our May cruise, I found the water to be a little chilly but not cold at all.

There were plenty of chairs with umbrellas set up along the beach. Whether you want a full sun location or prefer the shade, there were lots of seating options.

Pools at Bimini

While we really did love the beach area, there are also two gorgeous lagoon-style pools overlooking the sea. There is seating along the pool, and the water is nice and warm. We also spent some time sitting in the shallow seats along the pool. You’ll probably want to visit both areas during your day in Bimini.

In addition to the beach and pool areas, there’s also a terrace area as you enter the beach club. This area has different types of seating as well as a bar. There’s also a bar overlooking one of the pools with fun hanging wicker chairs.

Coconuts in a cart, branded with clever phrases like a

Bars and Food

You won’t go hungry or thirsty at the Beach Club at Bimini. There are bars located throughout the resort, and servers also walk by the chairs taking orders. You can charge all of your drinks with your band, so there’s no need for cash or credit cards.

Coconuts are also available if you’d like to try local juice. They are delicious and are also fun for photos. Choose one from the cart, pay, and a server will make a hole in it for you.

Lunch is also included on the island. It includes things like conch and mango salad as well as Bimini snapper. We really enjoyed our lunch – it’s a step above standard BBQ fare.

When it was announced the cruise ships would start calling to Bimini Island in the Bahamas, it garnered a lot of interest.

After all, up until this point, cruisers in the area have been limited to Nassau, Freeport, or the various private destinations run by the lines.

green sea with a lot of people

There’s been a bit of confusion among some cruisers given that Virgin Voyages has made a lot of noise about their private, exclusive Bimini Beach Club… which some pointed out seemed to be part of the Resorts World complex.

As it turns out, they are essentially at the same complex. However, Virgin Voyages’ guests have access to a private beach and amenities that are only available to them on days when the company ships in port.

Thus, it’s not at all uncommon for ships from various cruise lines — including Carnival, Holland America, Disney, and others — to offer shore excursions to the Bimini Beach Club that are separate from what’s offered by Virgin Voyages.

So what can cruisers expect to find at the commonly used areas of the Bimini Beach Club?

bimini cruise port

On a clear day, you’re able to see all kinds of sea life upon your ship’s arrival at Bimini Island, including dolphins that often greet the ship and curious giant sea turtles in the distance.

The water is that Caribbean blue that, until you see it in person, you’d swear can only be achieved with Instagram filters.

dolphins bimini bahamas

When you walk off the ship, you are greeted by a Resorts World tram that will take you down to the Resorts World properties and beach club.

If you don’t want to check out Resorts World, you can walk off the pier and take a right. That will take you into the more authentic area of Bimini, where you’ll find local restaurants, dive shops, and a variety of unique shops.

resorts world tram

The Beach Club is a little less than a mile away from the pier. It is walkable, but it would be fairly easy to lose your way… plus, why walk when transportation is available? Save your energy for the taxing day of lounging and sipping cocktails you have ahead of you!

bimini beach club drone photo

Even though cruise lines other than Virgin use the facilities, they are still branded for Virgin Voyages, including the Rock Star retreat, which is a play on the Rock Star suites you’ll find onboard  Scarlet Lady  and her sisters.

bimini beach club

The club does request that guests wear face masks when not swimming or eating/drinking, but it wasn’t strictly enforced in the outdoor areas where there is plenty of space for natural social distancing.

bimini beach club mask sign

There are two pools at the Bimini Beach Club. The one on the south side is the family pool, while the other is reserved for guests 18 and over. (Obviously, this isn’t an issue when Virgin ships are in port, as their ships only carry those who are over the age of 18.)

bimini beach club pool

There are plenty of loungers, clamshells, and umbrellas around the pool. One thing there’s not a lot of unless you happen to be under one of those umbrellas, is shade.

bimini beach club pool

The aerial shot below shows just how expansive the Beach Club really is, with the two pools forming its heart and plenty of white sand beach nearby.

The adults-only pool usually features a DJ spinning tunes for the entertainment of guests.

Obviously, a wide variety of drinks put the “club” in “Beach Club.”

Here, they run the gamut from the Piña Colada and Mudslide to the Mr. Zombie (which — given that it includes gin, vodka, tequila, and white rum — might leave you feeling like one of the undead the next morning!).

beach club cocktails

The drinks at the club were $12 each, and there was a slew of servers constantly roaming the pool and beach areas to take orders — no need to get up from your lounger.

bimini beach club bar

There’s both a restaurant and a walk-up snack bar with things like burgers and chicken strips. You’ll find plenty of tables to eat your lunch, so you don’t have to bring it back to the beach or the pool, but you’re welcome to do that as well.

bimini beach club dining area

If you’re in the pool and suddenly have a craving for a cocktail, never fear… each of the pools has a swim-up bar, making it easy to quench that thirst.

bimini beach club pool

The beachfront property features a large strip of white sand and blue water. The shore itself is not at all rocky, so you won’t feel the need to slip into a pair of water shoes before wading in.

You will, however, want to ensure you have plenty of sunscreen because, as you can see, the beach — like the pool — isn’t a place where you’ll find a lot of shade!

bimini beach club

There are open day beds for guests to enjoy at the beachside and even a fire pit that’s used at night.

Final Thoughts of Bimini Beach Club

It’s easy to see why more and more cruise ships are making calls on Bimini and the beach club. While it has quite a bit in common with some of the private destinations already visited by ships, it’s different enough to give cruisers another beach worth exploring.

Penthouse Suites

Bimini Big Game Club Resort - Suites

Virgin Voyages likes to do things a little differently than other cruise lines. It does not operate a private island , like Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line. Instead, it invites guests to an exclusive beach club on the island of Bimini in the Bahamas, where cruisers can enjoy sand, sun and sea without paying for an excursion.

Virgin Voyages ' Bimini Beach Club in the Bahamas is a staple on all of the cruise line's Bahamas and Caribbean sailings. Here's our guide to everything you need to know about the island and the beach club to plan your perfect day.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What is the Beach Club at Bimini?

bimini yacht club

The Beach Club at Bimini is a stretch of beach plus facilities (pool, food pavilions, bars and water sports) that are reserved for the exclusive use of Virgin Voyages passengers when one of the line's ships docks at Bimini. It's akin to a European beach club or Caribbean private beach resort where you pay an entry fee for access to a private shoreside complex — except that entry is included in your Virgin Voyages' cruise fare.

The facility is technically owned by Resorts World Bimini, but it was designed by Virgin Voyages. Resort guests and travelers on other cruise ships may purchase day passes to the beach club when a Virgin Voyages ship is not in port.

Where is the Beach Club at Bimini?

Virgin Voyages' Bimini Beach Club is on North Bimini Island, one of three islands that make up Bimini in the Bahamas. The beach is not far from Alice Town, the main settlement.

Bimini is roughly 50 miles from the Florida coast. (For reference, a ferry can make the journey in two hours.)

The beach club is near the Hilton at Resorts World Bimini and has condo-style vacation rentals.

Which cruise ships go there?

bimini yacht club

Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady are the main cruise ships that visit Bimini and use the beach club.

However, other cruise ships do call on Bimini, including ships from Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises and Holland America . The cruise lines may sell excursions to Virgin Voyages' Beach Club at Bimini or to the beach at Beach 360 or Resorts World Bimini.

How do you get to and around Bimini?

A complimentary open-air tram takes cruisers from the end of the pier to key stops on Bimini. The first stop is the Fisherman's Village Marina, where you can rent a golf cart to independently explore the island, book a golf cart tour or do a little shopping. If you just want to go to the beach club, stay on the tram. The next stop is Virgin Voyages' Beach Club.

If you arrive on a ship that isn't affiliated with Virgin, the tram will also take you to the public area of the beach past the club, where a couple of food trucks or water sports vendors may set up shop.

What are the best things to do in Bimini?

bimini yacht club

Bimini is a tiny island and its biggest attraction is the beach. Most Virgin Voyages cruisers will spend the entire day at the beach club.

The first thing you will see when you enter the club are the side-by-side lagoon pools. They are flanked with lounge chairs and cabanas, and cater to folks who want to get wet but don't want to brave the ocean waves. The coveted lounge chairs by the pools fill up quickly, so disembark early if you want to nab one.

Midday, Virgin Voyages crew members bring out an array of fun pool floats for your lounging (and photo-taking) pleasure.

Adjacent to the pool on the left, as you face the ocean, is the also-popular Lagoon Bar. If you see an empty swing chair, grab it quickly. Then sway lazily in the sun with your toes in the water as you sip your frozen cocktail.

bimini yacht club

Most everyone ends up on the beach, where rows of complimentary lounge chairs with shade umbrellas wait for eager sun worshippers. Note that the farthest row of chairs from the beach does not have umbrellas, nor can you rent them.

Cabanas are available for rent here as well. Early birds can claim the padded day beds and circular clamshell loungers scattered around the beach.

Activities on the beach may include stand-up paddleboard yoga and the "We Run This Beach" summer camp-style competition.

Back toward the club's entrance, the Hideaway is a palm tree forest of hammocks, so you won't miss your balcony too much while you're in port. Adjacent to the Main House is the open-air-but-roofed Lounge if you want to escape the sun but keep the ocean view.

bimini yacht club

On the opposite side of the Main House, Belvedere Beach is a shady space offering volleyball and bocce ball courts, plus corn hole. It's sponsored by the cruise line's beverage partner, Belvedere Vodka.

If you're looking for water sports, Virgin Voyages does offer SUP yoga, but the Bimini Beach Club does not offer any other rentals. You can book a water sports tour or rent equipment independently from Kayak Beach (directly outside the port's gates) or at the water sports shack beyond the northern perimeter of the Beach Club.

Do suite guests get special treatment on Bimini?

bimini yacht club

Passengers booked in suites and other VIPs get access to the RockStar Retreat at the far end of the beach club.

The open-air, covered pavilion houses a bar, private bathrooms and patio-like seating areas. It's much nicer to order a drink here than fight the crowds at the Lagoon Bar. The patio is also lovely for folks who want to enjoy the sun without getting sandy.

Come lunchtime, find a seat on the patio and a waiter will come and take your lunch order. The menu is the same as at the main lunch venues. However, instead of waiting in line and carrying your food to a picnic table, you can order from a comfortable seat, and a server will bring your meal.

Down on the sand, lounge chairs, cabanas and day beds await VIP sun worshippers. The ship's rockstars don't have to fight for seating with the regular Joes, and prime seating does not fill up as quickly as on the rest of the beach.

What are the Beach Club at Bimini excursions?

bimini yacht club

There's no reason to spend money on a tour on Bimini because you're treated to a beach day already. However, if you're the type who can't lie on the beach for hours, Virgin Voyages does offer the following tours. (Pricing and availability may vary by sail date.)

  • Bimini Heritage and Cultural Tour (tram tour of the island), from $85.
  • Fishing charter, from $250.
  • Guided two-tank scuba dive, from $150.
  • Jet ski tour for two, from $250.
  • Kayak tour for two, from $150.
  • Paint by the Bay: Bimini Art Workshop, from $85.
  • Sapona Shipwreck and Shark Snorkeling, from $140.
  • Sapona Shipwreck Swim and Snorkel, from $85.
  • Swim with stingrays, from $115.
  • Midafternoon pontoon boat cruise, from $100.
  • Wild dolphin safari, from $175.

Can you rent cabanas on Bimini Beach?

bimini yacht club

Yes! Virgin Voyages' Bimini Beach Club offers four kinds of cabanas for rent, with the differences mainly based on location within the club area.

The rustic structures conjure up deserted island vibes with their thatched-wood roof and walls. The fourth side is open and the wooden floor extends into a kind of patio. Under the roof is an adjustable day bed, side table and striped beanbag chairs; outside are two lounge chairs and a coffee table. A drink cooler is provided.

Dedicated crew members will attend to your needs and bring you food and drinks so you don't have to wait in line with everyone else. They will also surprise you with treats, but Virgin Voyages is coy about what those might be.

Prices are listed per cabana, not per person; cabanas can accommodate up to six. Pricing also includes a $100 drink credit to use on bottle service, pitchers of mai tais and other beachy beverages, spiked coconuts or whatever you're thirsty for.

Bimini Beach Cabanas

Four clusters of beach cabanas flank the north, central and south ends of the beach club's strip of sand. The 14 cabanas are between the complimentary lounge chairs and the pools.

Prices start from $500 per cabana.

Bimini Grove Cabanas

bimini yacht club

The Grove cabanas are identical to the beach cabanas but are located farthest from the water, near The Lounge and the hammock grove. These are best if you're looking for a quiet escape and don't intend to get wet.

Because of their location, Bimini Grove Cabanas are the cheapest cabana option, with prices starting from $400 per cabana.

Bimini Lagoon Cabanas

The four Bimini Lagoon Cabanas are poolside, between the righthand (or north) pool and Beach Eats North. These are best for cruisers who prefer calm, chlorinated water to ocean waves.

Bimini RockStar Cabanas

RockStar cabanas are exclusive to passengers staying in RockStar suites or other VIPs with Richard's Rooftop access on board. However, if any of the nine cabanas don't sell, Virgin may open them up to regular sailors – earning them the full rockstar treatment for their time at the beach club.

What is the beach club's food menu, and is it free?

bimini yacht club

Virgin Voyages does not offer self-serve, buffet dining on its ships or on its private beach. If you're expecting a buffet-style beach barbecue as you'd find on another's line private island, you're in for a pleasant surprise.

First of all, lunch is complimentary at the beach club and served from late morning well into the afternoon. There are two Beach Eats pavilions with food service and seating, and RockStars can order from the pavilion area of the VIP Retreat.

No matter where you choose to dine, you'll order off a menu, and your food will be brought to you.

bimini yacht club

Here's Virgin Voyages' Bimini Beach Club food menu (order as much or as little as you like):

  • Lechon asado.
  • Caribbean chicken and coconut curry.
  • West Indian pumpkin curry.
  • Banana leaf steamed red snapper.
  • Bahamian mango and macadamia nut salad.
  • Watermelon and jicama salad.
  • Crispy cassava.
  • Grilled corn on the cob.
  • Tropical fruit salad.
  • Rum cake with guava sauce.

Do not miss the curries or the delicious grilled corn on the cob with jerk mayo and toasted coconut. The rum cake is a Bimini Beach Club specialty, so save room for dessert.

Does my Sailor Loot or Bar Tab work at the Bimini Beach Club bars?

You do not need cash at the Bimini Beach Club, just the RFID bracelet you use on board. Your drinks will be charged to your onboard account, so you can use any credit from a Virgin Voyages' Bar Tab package or Sailor Loot to fund your beachside fun.

Does the beach club have Wi-Fi?

Virgin Voyages' onboard Wi-Fi extends to the beach club. You might have to reconnect your phone or other device, but you will have internet access on Bimini.

What's the typical Bimini Bahamas weather?

The weather is lovely in Bimini year-round, with average high temperatures ranging from the low-70s in winter to the mid-80s in summer. The summer months are the rainiest, with September typically getting the most rainfall. (That month is also the peak of hurricane season in the Atlantic and Caribbean.)

Be prepared that the beach can be windy and that winds can pick up or calm down throughout the day. If the surf is up when you visit, water sports might get canceled. The pool area is more protected, so head to the lagoon if sand is flying down on the beach.

Can I see a Beach Club at Bimini map?

You can find a map of the beach club in The Main House, to the left as you enter the club.

Lauderdale Yacht Club’s "Bimini Blast" Returns to the Big Game Club

Posted in General , Art , Bass Fishing | Leave a comment

By GHO Admin

ALICE TOWN, BIMINI—SEPTEMBER 2, 2010 – Not since Junkanoo has the tiny island of Bimini—just over 50 miles from the Southeast Florida mainland— seen such a fun-filled weekend as the “Game On” Bimini Blast hosted recently by the members of the Lauderdale Yacht Club.

Held at the newly re-opened Bimini Big Game Club, a Guy Harvey Outpost Resort and Marina, the four-day fishing and family-oriented Bimini Blast was a return to a traditional Bahamas outing for the 1,000-plus member Lauderdale Yacht Club, which was first established in 1938.

Some 140 guests, many arriving in a flotilla of 32 boats ranging from 23 to 75 feet, partied hardy to the island music and sounds of Mango Man, and enjoyed many activities, including their annual Offshore Fishing Tournament, kids dockside fishing fun and conch shell painting, a visit to the world-famous Bimini Biological Station’s Shark Lab,  the “Splish Splash” pool party and traditional Bimini Blast LYC group photo, a “Big Fish” tattoo contest, the “Game On” best meat BBQ Cook-off competition, plus other local outings …all interacting with the general laid-back ambiance offered only in Alice Town, the cultural hub of the island.

bimini yacht club

Lauderdale Yacht Club member and a Bimini Blast co-organizer Jennifer M. Saia said the club has over the years traditionally held its summer membership event in Bimini, often at the Big Game Club, which was established in 1936. Per the 2010 Bimini Blast Committee Co-Chairs, Lance Lehman and Tripper White, the LYC Event dates back to 1984 when it’s first outing was held with only five boats in attendance at the Big Game Club. Subsequent years have seen attendance as high as 70 boats and 300 people.

After a five year hiatus, the Lauderdale Yacht Club returned to Bimini with its annual blast event last year staying at the Bimini Bay Resort, but switched to the Big Game Club this season after learning about its re-opening with new management this summer.

“The Big Game staff was great and the newly revamped accommodations and facility were terrific,” said Saia, who added that the LYC has already scheduled its 2011 Bimini Blast at the Big Game Club for June 23-26 with the hopes to bring the attendance back to record numbers of boats and guests!

Bimini is the Bahamian island located closest to the United States. It can be found only 80 kilometres from the shores of Florida. It consists of three islands: North Bimini, South Bimini and East Bimini. The largest island, which is also the most significant one in terms of tourism, is North Bimini. Although the group of islands is relatively small, it is still a unique world waiting to be explored. The waters of the area are incredibly clean: we can see the sandy sea bottom under our boat. It is an amazing spectacle to see the coastal waters changing their colours from dark blue to green when approaching the ocean.

The location of Bimini

Bimini is the southernmost archipelago of the Bahamas, and it is the Bahamas’ closest point to the United States. It is located app. 80 kilometres east of Miami and 210 kilometres west of Nassau. It has a population of around 2, 000 people. It consists of three islands: North Bimini, South Bimini and East Bimini. The most significant one of them is North Bimini. The island is app. 11 kilometres long and 200 metres wide. Alice Town is the capital and also the centre of the archipelago. The international airport can be found in South Bimini. Cay Sal Bank is located to the south, app. 100 kilometres away. Although it also belongs to the Bimini area, it is not part of the archipelago geographically.

At the end of the 19th century, the cotton trade provided prosperity for people on most islands including Bimini. The real flourishing started in the 1920s, during the prohibition of alcohol, as the prohibition did not apply to Bimini. During this time, a large number of ships were anchoring around Bimini, which was used for storing alcoholic beverages by American rum traders. Today, Bimini is a first-class tourist destination. The exclusive hotels and casinos attract gamblers, and the island is also a popular place among anglers thanks to the Bimini Game Club.

The climate of Bimini

Bimini has a subtropical climate, characterised by moderate warm weather during the entire year. The average annual temperature is 28° Celsius; this means 21° Celsius in the winter and 27° Celsius in the summer. The temperature rarely drops below 16° Celsius or above 32° Celsius. The dominant wind blows from the northeast in the winter and from the southeast in the summer, freshening up the air a bit. The velocity of the wind is an average of 15 km/h during the entire year. Most of the precipitation falls in the summer months. At the end of the summer – during the period between June and November – tropical cyclones (hurricanes) may be a threat.

The strong wind (with a blast of over 90 km/h) and the seawater that rises, as a result, may cause heavy damage. The weather is usually pleasant in Bimini during the whole year, meaning that sailing is also enjoyable in all seasons. We should definitely avoid the hurricane season though, as storms may be very challenging.

The main attractions in Bimini

Bimini is a small pearl of the Bahamas. Amazing beaches, excellent bays and water activities. Despite its small size, we can find everything here, that we like so much in the Bahamas. There is another reason that makes the archipelago unique among the neighbouring islands: its rich history, the traces of which are still visible today. The shipwreck of the famous American ship SS Sapona is located near South Bimini. The Fountain of Youth can also be found in the south; Indian legend has it that its water has a rejuvenating effect.

Bimini Road lies near the shores of North Bimini; they say that it was part of the sunken city Atlantis. There are two lighthouses of over 200 years old towering in the sky here as well; the one on Gun Cay has been guiding Bahamian sailors since 1836. The other one, namely the Great Isaac Tower is located 30 kilometres from Bimini; it was built-in 1859. With its height of 45 metres, it is the highest lighthouse in the area.

The gastronomy of Bimini

If you would like to try the cuisine of Bimini, you must visit one of the local snack bars and restaurants. Besides filling our bellies, we can also get to know the locals, get an insight into authentic Bahamian fish frying and try different delicacies. One of the unique Bahamian specialties is the conch and the salad prepared with it. Some of the restaurants have an open kitchen setting, providing us with the opportunity to see how the food we ordered is prepared. The restaurants on the beach are more romantic, offering a wonderful view of the sea. They serve fresh frutti di mare, sushi and hamburgers, always with a twist by the local chefs. If we prefer to play it safe, we can choose from traditional American and Italian dishes as well.

Beaches in Bimini

Radio beach.

One of the most popular and best-known beaches can be found on North Bimini, directly next to Queen’s Highway. It is a very long shore segment – almost 3 kilometres in length – stretching from Alice Town all the way to Bailey Town. They refer to it as Radio Beach most of the time, but in fact, it consists of three connected beaches. Radio Beach is followed by Blister Beach and Spook Hill Beach. It would be a tough call to name the best or most beautiful one, and it is not in our place to do so. It depends entirely on you which parts you will like the best and where you want to spend a beautiful day.

Tiki Hut Beach

There are several cosy and peaceful beaches on South Bimini. Tiki Hut Beach might be the most significant one. It is a white sandy beach located on the western coast and has a length of over 2 kilometres. The shores are surrounded by breathtaking flora consisting of rattans, sisals and unique tropical flowers.

Honeymoon Beach

Honeymoon Beach is the famous beach of Gun Cay, located south of Bimini. The origin of the name is unknown, but make no mistake, the beach is not only for lovers. We can only approach it on a boat or on any other type of vessel. The beach is covered by warm sand, and diving in the incredibly clean water is a fantastic experience. There are several stingray species living near the beach, which have been so used to the presence of humans that they just swim around in peace. If we are careful enough and pay attention not to step on them, the chances of being stung are very slim. We can even touch or feed them.

North Cat Cay Beach

There are white sandy beaches all over the western coast of North Cat Cay. We can collect beautiful shells and other treasures on the beach. As the sea is very calm here, it is ideal for waterskiing, surfing and kayaking. The Bahamian waters are the cleanest in these parts, making them perfect for snorkelling as well. Divers can venture further out towards the Gulf stream where they can explore amazing reefs and giant tropical fish in the deep waters.

Boat rental in Bimini

There are ports on all islands of the Bimini area that offer full service to sailors. Most of these are ports of entry, so we can take care of clearance practically anywhere. The service offered is professional. and every sailor will find the marina or anchorage that best suits their needs.

North Bimini

As its name suggests, the main island of the archipelago, North Bimini, is located in the north. The most important towns of the area can be found here: Alice Town, Bailey Town and Paradise Point. The archipelago is sparsely populated; most people live in North Bimini, which is the most buzzing island. There are several restaurants, bars and shops that visitors can choose from; the Hemingway Museum is located in Alice Town. Bimini Road, which is among the most exciting diving spots in the Bahamas, can be found in the northern corner of the island. They say that this is where the remains of the sunken city Atlantis are. There are many yacht marinas, anchorages and long beaches here.

Blue Water Marina, Browns Marina and Resort Word Bimini are all great establishments providing full service. Weech’s Bimini Dock is a cheaper and less exclusive marina, but we can find all the basic amenities here as well. Bimini Big Club is very popular among the visitors of Bimini; it is a first-class entertainment facility and a yacht marina at the same time

The Bimini Big Game Club

Bimini Big Game Club was started by Neville Stuart in 1936. The businessman organised ambitious fishing contests that attracted anglers from all over the world. The club operated mainly as an exquisite restaurant at first. In 1954, they moved to their current location, Alice Town, and then the place became a major venue for big-game fishing. The club earned its current shape during the 1970s; that is when the amazing yacht marina was added. The mission of the club’s owners is to preserve their heritage for the future. It has become one of the major holiday resorts for anglers, and they have added several events to its portfolio. Regardless of why we arrived on Bimini, we will definitely find some of these events interesting. We can go fishing, scuba-diving or just enjoy the amazing atmosphere of this old historic place.

Blue Water Marina

Browns marina.

Browns Marina is the first yacht marina of the Port of Bimini, located along a 60-metre-long boardwalk. They accommodate bigger boats with a larger draft. They provide access to Wi-Fi, electricity, and they also have showers. The port has its own bar, and there is also a nice picnic place and a grill.

South Bimini

South Bimini is the second-largest island in the archipelago. There are many private estates here making this place less significant in terms of tourism than its northern counterpart. However, the most important international airport of the archipelago, South Bimini Airport, is located here. The yacht marina called Bimini Sands Marina has a Blue Flag certificate thanks to its excellent waters. Also, the services offered here will cater to all the needs of yacht owners. There are customs and immigration offices at the entrance where we can arrange our clearance. It is the ideal central destination. Nixon’s Harbour is located in the southern corner of the island with great anchorages and moorings. The famous wreck of the SS Sappona can also be found nearby; it is a popular diving and snorkeling spot.

Bimini Sands Marina

There are some smaller islands south of Bimini. The first is Gun Cay, app. 10 kilometres from the southern corner of South Bimini. One of the most popular anchorages is at the northern end; all Bahamian sailors stop at Honeymoon Harbour. The area is spectacular, and its beach is among the most beautiful ones. A unique symbol of the island is the lighthouse located in the south, standing here since 1836.
