With more than 40 anchorages, there is always a tranquil spot to lose yourself and at night you can gaze up at the endless expanse of starlit sky, sheltered from the breeze in an inlet or secluded bay.

You can choose a sailing yacht, a catamaran or a power cruiser, and you can go it alone or ask for a sail guide and hostess to accompany you. Vessels accommodate between two and 10 guests and are fully equipped with everything required for a comfortable stay – just bring your sunscreen, swimming gear, a hat and sunglasses… and a sense of adventure!

No licence is required for bareboating – you will receive a detailed and comprehensive briefing before you start - and help is only a call away on the VHF radio.

Airlie Beach is a vibrant tourist town nestled in the heart of the Whitsundays, and only a 10 minute walk from the Coral Sea Marina Resort village .

This diverse town is a hub of activity with a range of dining and retail options, a fresh water lagoon and sandy beaches. From high street stores, to unique boutiques, as well as a fully equipped supermarket, Airlie Beach caters well for all visitor needs.

The scenic Bicentennial Walkway traverses from neighbouring Cannonvale Beach, through Coral Sea Marina Resort and ends at the Airlie Beach Lagoon and the Airlie Foreshore. It is the perfect way to stroll the coastline and enjoy the views out over the Coral Sea and Whitsunday Islands.

Saturday’s welcome the Lions Market which takes place on the Esplanade in the heart of Airlie Beach and has plenty of unique and interesting stalls.

From sunrise and into the early hours of the morning, you will never be short of options for dining and socializing, from contemporary cafes for your morning coffee to bars, pubs and nightclubs, there is an assortment of options available.

Hideaway Bay

For an absolute waterfront Queensland experience, take a drive out to Hideaway Bay where you will find both Montes Reef Resort and Cape Gloucester Reef Resort .

Both resorts have cabin style accommodation, are located absolute beachfront and have a restaurant/bar available. The drive itself will take you through the sugar cane fields which scatter our hinterland and weave through the Conway Ranges until you reach the coast and the unmistakable turquoise of the Whitsunday waters.

Cedar Creek Falls

This naturally forming waterfall during the wet season or after any large rainfall event is a wonderful experience. Enjoy a leisurely drive out towards Conway through lush agriculture land until you reach the waterfalls. With a plunge pool perfect for cooling off on a hot summers day, a climb to the top of the waterfall and beyond or space to relax under a shady tree, this is a nice way to experience the Whitsunday flora and fauna.

Cape Hillsborough National Park

Famed for its expansive beach and wildlife, a visit to the Cape Hillsborough National Park needs to be timed with sunrise or sunset. The resident wallaby population meet daily on the beach and are a sight to behold for those who have not experienced this Australian icon in their natural habitat. Cape Hillsborough is a short drive from Eungella National Park, make this visit part of an extended day trip.

Lake Proserpine

Lake Proserpine or the Proserpine Dam provides the perfect fresh water environment for watersports or barramundi fishing. Flat, calm water and a huge expansive lake is what makes Lake Proserpine popular with locals and visitors wake-boarding, jet skiing, fishing and wind surfing.

Fishing Safari: (April-June)

With the big Barramundi being the catch of choice for many anglers, there is no place that compares to the waters of North Queensland and the Top End of Australia. Other target species in these waters are Tuna, Mackerel, Giant Trevally and of course Giant Black Marlin.

We have 3 purpose built centre console tender boat fully equipped with live bait tanks to get you to those narrow, hard to reach fishing hot spots. All fishing adventures come with expert fishing guides to get you landing the “Big ones!”

A typical Fishing safari itinerary will include various locations in Arnhem Land including:

• Buckingham Bay
• Elizabeth Bay (pearl farm)
• Wessel Islands and Cumberland Straits (including the world famous 'hole in the wall').
• Northern Territory and Arnhem Land

You will generally fly in from Cairns in the evening to Gove, Northern Territory where you will be met by the Captain and transferred out to Phoenix One. From here the boat will venture off to the Wessel Islands where your arms will ache from the endless hook ups of Giant Trevally, Spanish Mackerel, Coral Trout and Queenfish.

Scope out the secluded beaches and crystal clear waters of the uninhabited islands. Fly fishermen can enjoy casting straight off the beaches!

From here your boat will move on to Barramundi country, Buckingham Bay and Arnhem Bay. In the Centre Console Tenders, your fishing guides will take you to the unchartered waterways that are teeming with Barramundi! The Chef will prepare gourmet feasts with the fish you catch and wish to eat.

At the end of the trip you will fly back to Cairns from Gove, the same as you arrived.

Whitsunday Island Hopping: (March - October)

Departing from Hamilton Island the first location you will visit is Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. Soak up the sun on the pure silica sands and enjoy a swim in the turquoise water.

During your luxury yacht charter voyage you can also enjoy snorkelling the beautiful fringing reefs on the Northern end of Hook Island and Blue Pearl Ba y , Hayman Island.

During the months of May-September Migratory Whales inhabit these tropical waters and give birth to their young, so it’s a great chance to spot them playing with their calves.

• Flying after scuba diving: a wait of 12 hours is recommended after one dive, 18 hour after 2 dives and at least 24 hours after multiple dives, before ascending to an altitude of 300 metres or greater.

What is the weather like in airlie beach.

Airlie Beach is a sub-tropical environment which means fine, mild weather most of the year. There is a wet season over summer which only has occasional showers. Winter in Airlie Beach doesn’t feel like winter at all, with an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius.

It’s possible to sail the Whitsundays at any time of year , with each season offering its unique attractions. 

Do I need a license to charter a boat in the Whitsundays without a skipper?

The need for a license will depend on the type of boat you want to hire and where you want to go. There are several considerations when it comes to a license.

• If you want to take a self-drive boat out to the islands and Whitehaven Beach with Airlie Beach Boat Hire, you need one person to hold a valid boat license – National or International.
• Unlicensed boats can be hired through Airlie Beach Boat Hire to fish and sightsee in designated areas. Please note that if you hire a day boat without a license, you can’t go to the islands.
• If you hire a bareboat from a yacht charter company in the Whitsundays, you do not need a license or sailing qualifications.

Do I need sailing experience to go on a bareboat charter?

We do suggest that one person on your charter has some basic boating knowledge and we are required to have at least two crew members over the age of 18 on each vessel.

Our experienced staff will support you all the way, helping plan your itinerary, giving you a comprehensive briefing on how to operate your vessel and staying in regular contact over VHF radio.

If you are feeling unsure about your sailing experience or your ability to handle a boat, you can hire a sail guide for an hourly or daily rate to make sure you’re confident with skippering the boat yourself.

We also run the Whitsunday School of Sailing , which is an option for anyone wanting to brush up on their sailing knowledge or learn the basics before a charter.

How do I know what bareboat to hire?

The vessels in our fleet can accommodate up to 10 guests. You can choose a sailing yacht , a catamaran or a motor cruiser. The boat you hire will depend on your budget, availability and how many people you need to accommodate.  

To help you decide between a catamaran or sailing yacht, we’ve completed a list of pros and cons. Most families and large groups who charter in the Whitsundays opt for a catamaran.

Where can I go on a bareboat around the Whitsundays?

There are 74 Islands within the Whitsundays group with more than 40 anchorages. You’ll be able to visit secluded islands away from day crowds as well as all the Whitsunday highlights such as Whitehaven, the Hamilton Island marina and our top snorkelling sites.
