Fort Myers Yacht Basin residents get answers from developer

For nearly four months, residents of the Fort Myers Yacht Basin expressed concerns over the redevelopment of the marina. Residents nearly exhausted every form of protest against Suntex Marina, the developer in current negotiations with the city.   

From red signs and shirts that read “STOP SUNTEX” to waiting five hours to speak by the dozens at multiple city council meetings, residents of the yacht basin heard their questions answered by Suntex leadership Monday night.   

About four dozen residents attended a public forum hosted by Wilbur Smith Law Firm, representing Suntex, and Suntex leadership at the Collaboratory. The purpose of the event was for the community to hear from the developer about what it plans to do with the yacht basin.   

The issue of where live-a-boards would go during and after construction was a looming question the residents had, as many fear not having a place to live and feel uncertainty around lease renewal and future rates.   

“Many of the concerned citizens here are concerned mostly because of where they’re going to be if construction starts, what’s going to happen and how much rates are going to go up,” said Ruth Diaz, a six-year resident at the yacht basin and four-year employee at the marina. “Are you guys going to work with all of us to try to make this work?”

David Filler, partner and head of investments for Florida and the Southeast at Suntex, said the company has no prohibitions against live-a-boards. Sam Chavers, senior vice president of operations for Suntex, echoed Filler’s response.  

“Live-a-boards are a common item in our industry,” said Chavers, who has taken over 25 separate marinas with Suntex in the last six years. “We work with them. Not one time have we come in and asked someone to leave for some arbitrary reason.”  

Leadership said the only way someone gets kicked out is for not being compliant with rules, regulations and lease terms. As for residents not being able to renew their leases, some of which are up next month, it was said to be common practice.   

“It is extremely common for anybody that owns real estate, that is either selling it or going to put up on a long-term lease like in this case, to not encumber the property during any type of negotiating period so that the new lessee can come in and do that directly with the tenants,” Attorney Sawyer Smith said. “I represent them here. There’s never once ever been a discussion about eviction or about how we transition anybody out.”  

Slip fees and rates have not yet been determined but are expected to be at the local market rate between $16 to $22 per foot, ensuring there will be an increase from the current $12 per foot residents pay now.  

“Every marina is different, and each market is different,” Filler said. “We can never charge more than market rate and market rate is not only a function of the general market, but the quality of the product that you’re offering.”  

Suntex has a marina in Fort Myers Beach, Snook Bight Marina, charging $20 per foot. 

Residents of the yacht basin felt left out of the request for proposal process, many admitting to having some hostility toward council members whom they felt did not do their due diligence surrounding the yacht basin.   

“This is a fair meeting tonight, you’re getting a little heat because nobody’s had the chance to vent,” said Randy Blakesley, a one-year resident of the yacht basin and five-year boat owner on the marina. “It’s not a dig at any one company. We didn’t feel the city did their due diligence and did a good assessment of slip availability, utilization or what was going on, and all of the sudden, this thing is way down the road and residents don’t even know what’s happened.”  

Smith consistently reminded attendees of the public forum that the redevelopment of the marina came from the city when they released a request for proposal.  

“The city has gone through its financial problems,” Smith said. “Right now, if you go through the books, we don’t have it insured. We can’t afford this. So, the city decided to issue an RFP and these guys have answered it based on the council’s request.”   

Suntex has the capital to move the project forward without additional funding and relieving the city of its $2.3 million debt on the marina.   

“This is a great opportunity to really improve this area and activate the waterfront and make it a destination for everybody,” Filler said. “That ability to almost create something that’s raw and mold it into something that we hope can be a really exciting trophy piece for the portfolio and for the city of Fort Myers.”  

Negotiations for the project are ongoing. If it moves forward, it’s expected to take between three to four years to complete, beginning with permitting and ending with construction.

The superyachts owned by tech moguls

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is set to join the exclusive club of yacht-owning tech tycoons as the rumoured owner of Oceanco's mighty 127m sailing yacht . Though it should come as no surprise - other big names in tech such as the late Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison and Paul Allen have been responsible for some of the biggest and most ground-breaking superyachts in the world...

The 127-metre Oceanco sailing yacht Koru, formerly Y721, was launched and reportedly delivered to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in April 2023. This three-masted schooner, meaning “new beginnings” in Maori, with an expected 33000 GT and a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, is the largest in the world and the longest built in the Netherlands at Oceanco. Knocking Lürssen's Eos , owned by Biller and Diane von Furstenburg, off the top spot, Koru harnesses design similarities with her black hull, white superstructure and classic lines. However, the intricate gold paintwork, scarlet bootstrap and elaborate figurehead on the bow particularly set her apart.

Larry Ellison

American business magnate Larry Ellison is the co-founder of the billion-dollar computer tech corporation Oracle. In 2004, he commissioned the 138-metre Lürssen superyacht Rising Sun (pictured), which stands today as the 15th largest yacht in the world. It was also the last yacht that ever came from the drawing boards of legendary designed Jon Bannenberg, sporting a military-esque profile with a lean destroyer-type hull and extensive use of structural glass . Rising Sun boasts 8,000m² of living space including a wine cellar and basketball court, with a crew of 45. One of her tenders, a catamaran, even carries the yacht’s 4x4 vehicle ashore. 

Ellison later sold the yacht to media mogul David Geffen and has since hosted a parade of Hollywood's glitterati on board including Leonardo DiCaprio, Steven Spielberg, Bruce Springsteen and Oprah Winfrey – to name a few. 

In 2011, Ellison appeared to downsize and took delivery of the 88-metre Feadship Musashi . Not unlike Rising Sun in its appearance, structural glass features heavily throughout with a central glass lift, surrounded by a stainless steel and glass staircase that passes through every deck.

More about this yacht

The late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is responsible for two of the most iconic superyachts in the world. At 126-metres in length, Octopus is perhaps his most famous. Built by Lürssen in 2003, this ice-classed superyacht was designed for extended cruising to the most remote locations on earth with a range of 12,500 nautical miles. Home to a helicopter garage, drive-in tender garage, six tenders, and a submarine, she packs a serious punch within her 9,932GT – not to mention the cinema, swimming pool, recording studio, basketball court and spa. At the end of 2019, she joined the market for the very first time , having completed an eight-month refit at Blohm+Voss, and remains the benchmark for exploration yachting.

Tatoosh is another honourable mention and was built by German shipyard Nobiskrug in 2000, three years prior to the delivery of Octopus . At 92-metres, she's smaller than her successor, but to describe Tatoosh as "small" would be a severe understatement. Highlights include a six-foot-deep swimming pool, a pair of helipads, a crew of 30, and a custom 12-metre Hinckley powerboat that she carries on her top deck. Tatoosh is also listed for sale following a refit earlier this year. 

Yachts for charter

The 78-metre Feadship Venus was built for the late Apple boss and founder Steve Jobs. Built under the codename Project Aqua, Venus was launched to international fanfare in 2012, heralded for its extensive use of glass and pared-back design courtesy of Philippe Starck . Innovative features include a false top deck that conceals the communication and television receivers from view and a passarelle that, when opened, looks like the charging port of an iPhone. Venus ’s interior details have been closely guarded since its launch. Sadly, Jobs died a year before the yacht was delivered.

Charles Simonyi

Charles Simonyi led the team that built the first edition of the Microsoft Office software suite and was rumoured to have previously owned Lürssen’s iconic 71-metre SKAT .  Nearly two decades after her launch in 2002, she joined the market for the first time and now Simonyi is thought to have upgraded to the 89-metre Lürssen Norn . Both yachts, penned by Espen Onion, share similar design features. Standout features include an alfresco cinema and adapted depth pool floor with dance floor. Norn was delivered in May 2023.

Sergey Brin

Google co-founder Sergey Brin reportedly owns the high-speed SilverYachts superyacht named Dragonfly , after Google’s once-secret project to launch a censored search engine in China. Delivered in 2009, the 73.3-metre Dragonfly was hailed as the fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruising superyacht on the water with a transatlantic range at 22 knots and a fuel consumption of only 360 litres per hour at 18 knots, extending her range to 4,500 nautical miles. Dragonfly is said to have a dance floor and open-air movie theatre on board. The vessel was applauded for its contribution to the disaster relief effort in Vanuatu after Hurricane Pam devastated the island in 2015. The crew reportedly moved 62 metric tons of freshwater ashore, treated over 250 patients, facilitated three medical evacuations, and built shelters in multiple villages and cleared numerous helicopter landing zones for ongoing support.

Google’s billionaire co-founder Larry Page purchased the 60-metre explorer yacht conversion Senses from a New Zealand businessman Sir Douglas Myers back in 2011. The globe-trotting superyacht features interiors by Philippe Starck and can accommodate a total of 12 guests on board, with primary guests reaping the benefits of the master suite's gyro-stabilised bed. Senses also houses an exceptional toy box with three high-speed tenders, six wave runners, a jet board and a JetLev. According to the New Zealand Herald, Senses is currently undergoing a refit in Whangārei, New Zealand, after being sold to an unknown buyer in 2020. 

Barry Diller

The world’s largest three-masted schooner – also the third largest sailing yacht in the world – is owned by fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg and her husband Barry Diller, chairman and senior executive of IAC/InterActiveCorp and Expedia Group. The 92.92-metre sailing yacht, named Eos , was built in Germany by Lürssen and delivered in 2006 with a trio of masts that stand 61-metres tall. The sailing yacht has hosted the couple's star-studded group of friends including Andy Cohen, Gayle King, Bradley Cooper, Harry Styles and Karlie Kloss. The interiors were designed by Francois Catroux, who Vanity Fair named as “the super-rich's favourite interior designer" in 2016.

Mark Zuckerburg

The 107-metre Kleven superyacht Andromeda was built for serial superyacht owner Graeme Hart and delivered under the name Ulysses . In 2017, a year after its launch, rumours began circulating that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg had purchased the rugged, six-deck explorer (although a Facebook spokesperson was quick to stamp out the rumours and released a statement denying the claims). Andromeda can carry 36 guests and is equipped with an impressive inventory of toys and tenders, including six motorbikes, two ATVs, a helicopter and an amphibious rib. Five years after her launch, Andromeda still ranks among the largest explorer yachts in the world . 

Eric Schmidt

The former Google ceo Eric Schmidt backed out of the purchase of the abandoned 81.3-metre Oceanco Alfa Nero but has been said to have moved onto become the new owner of a 95-metre Lürssen. Kismet was sold in September 2023 to the billionaire as part of one of the biggest brokerage deal of the year. With the details shrouded in secrecy the yacht is now aptly known as Whisper . Espen Onio was responsible for her iconic exterior while inside was thanks to  Reymond Langton , achieving the original brief from the previous commissioning owner Shahid Khan of “caviar and champagne.” Standout details include the hi-tech, art deco saloon, a private observation platform and the Persian-inspired spa area.

The co-founder and former ceo of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, has been rumoured to own the 99.9-metre Feadship , Moonrise. The yacht’s clean and strong lines, penned by Chris Bottoms from Studio de Voogt , won the highly competitive class of best displacement motor yachts above 3,000 GT in the World Superyacht Awards 2021. Features include the helicopter landing deck and modern interiors by Remi Tessier . Accommodation is for up to 16 guests, and there are 32 crew members onboard Moonrise to attend to the guests' every need. The Ukrainian-American mogul is also said to own the accompanying support vessel Nebula.

Evan Speigel

The Silicone Valley ceo, Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel has been reportedly said to own the 94.8-metre Feadship Bliss. Delivered in 2021 the motor yacht penned by Feadship's Studio De Voogt Naval Architects has most recently been spotted cruising Auckland in September 2023. Spiegel is rumoured to be Feadship's younger client. Bliss can accommodate up to 18 guests across nine staterooms; however little else is known about the 2983 GT yacht.

Time's up for boaters who left their vessels at Fort Myers boat basin

Deadline at hand for removing boats from fort myers yacht basin, an 88-year-tradition ending as developers set sights on modernization..

After 88 years of providing a place where local people could dock their boats, in a hometown chosen in part because of its access to the Caloosahatchee River and the oceans beyond, the Fort Myers Yacht Basin is ending a service that began in the dark days of the Great Depression.

"The yacht basin was built for a reason; it served that purpose admirably up to today," said City Councilman Liston Bochette, who represents Ward 4 which includes the waterfront.

"Society changes, needs change," he said. "The yacht basin wasn't evolving."

City officials imposed the April 27 deadline to remove the boats but is working with some of the boat owners to leave the property. However, with more than a dozen boats remaining in the harbor on Friday, the day after the deadline, Fort Myers officials allowed the boats to remain through the weekend.

People who live aboard boats were hit hard when Hurricane Ian swept through Lee County on Sept. 28, ramming the boats into one another, tossing others onto land, lying them on their sides or sinking them.

Hurricane Ian sounded death knell to live-aboard boaters

With more than a dozen vessels remaining on the site, few can get away under their own power. Many are capsized or wrecked, some are unsafe and not seaworthy. Those vessels will need to be towed. Some will need to be pulled off the river bottom. 

Heavy construction equipment has been brought in to aid clearing the land near the docks. The equipment was being used Wednesday to demolish a boat that had run ashore under the southbound Edison Bridge, as a double-bay debris removal company was waiting to cart another load of rubble to the dump.

Mike McNeil, a Chicago native who has lived in the yacht basin for several years, spent part of Friday trying to get his motorized water craft to power up so that he could ride it to a boat storage facility.

"It kills ya to have to make that change," McNeil said, as he prepared his small vessel for the open waters of the Caloosahatchee hoping he can work on it, and perhaps again become a live-aboard, but somewhere else.

"Fort Myers made itself, its reputation was that they want these retirees to come down and these people who are on a limited budget, they all came down here," McNeil said. "But now it's like all the rich people are coming down and it's 'we want the money and we don't care about these people anymore'."

He recently found an apartment in Lee County.

"I'm in this gray area where I'm making too much money to qualify for low income, but I can't afford the upper income," said McNeil, who was an actor in theaters in Chicago before moving south.

Making way for future developments

Fort Myers owns and operates the boat yard, but has transferred nearly all operating authority to a private concern, Suntex Marinas, which will run the facility.

A month ago, Suntex, signed a contract with the city to manage the boatyards and expand the commercial footprint around the boatyard.

The company has extensive operations in boat docking and marinas, more than a dozen in Florida, including the Snook Bight Marina on Fort Myers Beach and two in Sarasota. Marinas typically supply boat slips, fuel, storage racks and waterfront dining, among other shoreline activities.

Suntex has promised new docks, a downtown marina and other development in the city‘s downtown section.

The Okeechobee Waterway is maintained by the US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE), who built the canals and locks for navigation across state. The Caloosahatchee River is the third leg of the Great Calusa Blueway of scenic waterways in the area, great for kayak and canoe excursions. The 67-mile river was used as a water highway by the Calusa Indians, from whom it was named, and early settlers in the area. Today the river’s wide end where it flows out into bays and the Gulf of Mexico is busy with industry, shipping and boating in stark contrast to its peaceful backwaters where it drains the northern Everglades. As with the Naples area, wealthy businessmen and celebrities took a shine to Fort Myers for its natural beauty and abundant waterways, along with infrastructure development in the late 1800’s and turn of the century. Inventors Thomas Edison and Henry Ford purchased land in 1916 and built estates in what is now downtown Fort Myers. Edison planted the stately Royal Palms that line scenic McGregor Blvd leading to the city’s most upscale riverfront neighborhoods. The Edison and Ford estates are now museums that have become Fort Myers most visited attraction.

The barrier islands of Sanibel and Captiva and Fort Myers Beach are known for their beautiful beaches and a prime destination for vacationers, including those from other areas of Florida. There are endless family-friendly attractions, restaurants, shopping and resorts, fishing, golf and many wonderful Nature Reserves and islands to explore, especially by water.

With so much waterfront, boaters can cruise up to any number of great restaurants in the area. In Cape Coral, on the north bank of the Caloosahatchee, is Fathoms at Cape Harbour, accessible from the river and Cape Harbour. Fathoms offers indoor and outdoor dining. Marker 92 Waterfront Bar & Bistro and the Nauti Mermaid Dockside Bar & Grill. Rumrunners, with indoor and outdoor dining, is also accessible from the Caloosahatchee and Cape Harbour.

In Fort Myers, the Lighthouse Restaurant (MM II in Jonathan Harbour, just past Connie Mack Island) features a full bar, indoor and outdoor dining dockside and a 160’ porch for watching spectacular sunsets and millionaire’s yachts. The Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa (MM II) features Charley’s Cabana Bar (tapas bar and dinner), the Tarpon House (American casual dining) and Courtside Steakhouse with full bar (upscale; reservations required). Fort Myers Beach has a vast selection of eateries; here are several for boaters—Bayfront Bistro above the Snook Bight Yacht Club; Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille with a great view of Estero Bay; Original Shrimp Dock Bar & Grill; Flippers On The Bay at Lovers Key Beach Club & Resort, located just east of Big Carlos Pass, is great place for coconut shrimp; Matanzas Harborside Restaurant, dockage while dining is free; Nervous Nellie’s is casual dining with a vast menu from which to choose; Parrot Key Caribbean Grill, Marker 24 near Matanzas Pass Bridge, seafood and raw bar; Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina, Marker 11 with onsite Bongo’s Bar & Grill that is poolside serving casual fare and seafood.

North Fort Myers on the north bank of the Caloosahatchee, is the Three Fishermen, located northwest of the Caloosahatchee Bridge with possible the best riverfront view in Lee County, is an open-air seafood place. On Sanibel, cruise up to Gramma Dots at Sanibel Marina and on Captiva, there’s The Green Flash at GICW Marker 38 (a green light flashes at sunset) for seafood and steak; Old Captiva House is also at Marker 38 faces the Gulf of Mexico.

Some of the area Marinas to consider are Sweetwater Landing Marina; Port Sanibel Marina, located nest to Connie Mack Island, features onsite Lighthouse restaurant and a mile-long Nature Boardwalk, has 95 stationary docks with finger piers and tie-off pilings; Fort Myers Yacht Basin; Legacy Harbour Marina; Semmer’s Docks; Moss Marine in Fort Myers Beach; Pink Shell Resort & Marina in Fort Myers Beach (Bongo’s Bar & Grill). This is by no means a comprehensive list; there are many marina facilities with varying vessel accommodations and of course, private membership yacht clubs—some with reciprocity.

Alfresco entertaining is the order of the day on the expansive flybridge with multiple seating options and sunning spaces. Inside, the Hatteras M75 astounds with an open-concept deckhouse salon and galley arrangement, surrounded by panoramic windows for views spanning 360 degrees.

The M75 features a gorgeous full-beam master suite in addition to a private VIP stateroom and designer-inspired twin staterooms for your guests. Along with a generous array of fine amenities, the M75 also offers the ability to introduce a range of custom details to ensure the yacht bears your personal stamp.

Current owner commissioned this vessel for build while working interactively with the Hatteras executive team in design and the build process. This is hull #1 for the Panacera 75 Motor Yacht which had scrupulous oversight in the build process. It was the showcase vessel for Hatteras's marketing of this model. They have since discontinued the motor yacht series focusing solely on producing sport fish models. Since the discontinuance, the value of the Panacera line has risen as a sought-after blue water wide-body safe, sexy and comfortable cruising vessel. These vessels are as solid as can be imagined, weight of this vessel exceeds others in its size by around 50k pounds. Ran out or ran slow for economy, these vessels have a great ride.

This vessel road out Hurricane Ian in a shipyard on blocks and in the cradle of a crane in Fort Myers, FL. It did not suffer any structural damage nor did it take on any water. However, it did get cosmetically damaged from other vessels and building materials in the yard bumping into it. As a result, it underwent a refit in Bradford Marine’s Fort Lauderdale shipyard resulting in a highly upgraded vessel. 

Main engines - Cat C-32A 1800 hp engines with 1,600 hours. All service performed by Miley’s Cat Diesel. Vessel has been ran at slow speed for good portion of its run history so loads and total fuel burn are minimal.

Generators - Twin Onan 27.5 KW that have 4,400 original hours but both were rebuilt/overhauled at the same time recently. Rebuilds done as preventative maintenance not due to any failures. 

Through out ownership this vessel has been stored and maintained at the owner’s residence.
