- Swan 62 - ATEM
ATEM is the last built and arguably best built Swan 62. She was extended at the factory and measures 65' LOA. Her Options Specification list when new covers 13 pages of upgrades over the Standard Specification.
ATEM remains under her first owner who has completed a great deal of short-handed sailing all over the world.
Maintained most recently by the famed Lyman Morse yard in Maine, ATEM is without doubt a most spectacular Swan.
A rare find. No upgrades are required at this time. Just add your personal belongings and groceries and off you go. A viewing is highly recommended.

Swan 62: Norwegian Would
- By Kim Kavin
- Updated: March 26, 2010
It’s after 10 p.m., and the sunlight is just starting to fade. Twilight mixes with drizzle as we cruise into the harbor, hoping for a place to tie up that doesn’t involve a halfdozen lines and a spread of rocks at the base of a towering fjord. I peek from beneath the hood of my bright-yellow, Gorton’s Fisherman jacket. Clumps of people cavort onshore-windowshopping, bar-hopping, and walking off what were undoubtedly massive dinner plates of freshly caught salmon. The locals carry umbrellas the way the rest of us might wear a wristwatch, just part of the daily ensemble in a place where it rains, on average, 219 days each year.
Capt. Charles Houal maneuvers our Swan 62, Early Purple , past the bulbous bow of an oil tanker tied up near the ferry dock. It’s one of at least a half-dozen behemoths sharing the harbor with pleasure boats tonight, like a collective welcome mat announcing Norway’s status as Europe’s leading oil and natural gas producer. Mate Arnaud Tallemet and chef Aurore Brin scramble on deck, and soon we’re tucked in just like the big boys.
Our lines look like the thinnest pull of dental floss next to the commercial-grade monsters, but no matter. We’ll share the cleats for the night-that is, what little of night there will be. This is the city of Bergen, Norway’s second largest after the capital of Oslo. We’re about 400 miles south of the Arctic Circle. It is early August, so the sun will be back up in about four hours. It doesn’t so much set here as wink between fleeting moments of dusk and dawn.
The heart of Norway’s fjord country, with Bergen as its base, is not your typical charter destination. I find myself here by sheer luck of timing and the yacht owner’s personal cruising schedule, which likely will be the parameters for you, too, if you want to charter in Scandinavia. The season is so short and the location so far from the popular Western Mediterranean that only a handful of international charter yachts visit each summer. In January, Peter Insull’s announced that the 158-foot motoryacht Grace had just become the first superyacht to position year-round for charter in Norway’s fjords, but in general, charters here remain catch-as-catch-can, as mine is. Early Purple’s owners are preparing for a 200-mile cruise up Norway’s west coast, where the yacht will sail through the fjords at Viking friendly latitudes north of the parallel that crosses Juneau, Alaska. They arrive in a week, which gives the crew time to squeeze in a quick charter with me.
It will be only the third charter that Early Purple has performed since the owners took possession of the 2002 build in 2006.
“Charter has not been the priority for this boat,” Houal tells me, rattling off the list of destinations the owners have sailed during the previous three years. There’s Houal’s own hometown of Brittany, France, followed by the Côte d’Azur, Corsica, Italy, the Caribbean, Cuba, and Scotland. “Beginning in winter 2009-10, we plan to pick up our charter schedule more than in the past. We will start in Saint Maarten and then move during the summer of 2010 to someplace new. Maybe South America. Maybe the South Pacific.”
Traipsing the globe aboard the beautifully maintained Early Purple seems to be Houal’s natural calling. He came aboard with the new owners, whose first yachting experience was a charter he performed for them aboard another Swan 62 in the Caribbean. They stole him away to show them the world, as opposed to frequenting the harbors from Antigua to Antibes that become home bases for so many other charter yachts. The cruising style, as it affects charter, suits Early Purple’s design, which includes a spacious cockpit for outdoor dining as well as a large indoor seating area, plus a sizable master cabin aft that affords the primary charterer a great deal of privacy. On a boat this size, during a charter of a week or more in a place where civilization is minimal, it’s important to have such “changes of scenery” during mealtime, as well as a place to retreat on occasion.
The owners’ off-the-beaten-course cruising style and resulting charter locations also require an attitude and skill set that not all skippers possess. Early Purple’s crew arrived in Norway just a few days before I did, and Houal, still reading the charts and cruising guides himself, is ready to explore. I am thrilled to join him aboard this Swan 62, which offers a charter experience far different than larger motor or sailing yachts might. There is a quietness to the cruising, a feeling of connectedness to the nature-which is key in a location where natural surroundings are the main event. I’ve cruised into Portofino, Italy, aboard a nearly 200-foot, chartered Feadship. Cruising into Norway’s coves aboard Early Purple is entirely different and yet just as mesmerizing, making me feel almost like a bird setting down within the wilds that man has yet to discover.
We gunkhole in Early Purple’s dinghy just south of Bergen. I see a glacier in the distance, but the ones that carved these waters are long gone. Now, the place looks almost lake-like, as if nature crossed the wilds of coastal Maine with the summer camps of New York’s Lake Placid. I see no bars, no restaurants, and little development beyond family homes. Each has a boathouse, most painted barn red, mustard yellow, or worn white. Kids leap from short bridges into the chilly water below, or cruise from home to home in runabouts that provide the same kind of freedom that T-Birds bring teenagers on Midwestern Main Streets. It’s a place that civilization has found, but mercifully not yet conquered.
Later that evening, Houal pulls Early Purple into a tree-ringed cove about an hour’s cruise away, at Lysøen Island. He kills the engine, and the silence is mesmerizing. A tap of a button on our windlass and it sounds like a high-powered crane. The place isn’t just natural. It’s blissfully raw.
The same is, of course, true of Norway’s sky-scraping fjords, which bring some 300 cruise ships into Bergen each year precisely because of their unconquerable beauty. We don’t have time to sail into them aboard Early Purple , so I hop on a tour boat and take the half-day looksee under a heavy canopy of fog and a biting, cold rain.
We get as far north as Osterfjorden and the village of Vikanes, and it’s enough for me to sense what the cruising farther north will be like. The view on either side of the boat is not unlike Alaska, only with the blue-white-black palette replaced by olivebrown- gray. Hardy, green-leafed trees climb into the clouds while the water dives some 2,000 feet beneath our keel. An occasional waterfall trickles into view. Here and there I see nooks in the rocky base-it’s not a shoreline-and imagine them as a place to tie a line (or five, as is sometimes required).
How amazing it would be to explore this place aboard a wellappointed charter yacht like Early Purple , bringing comfort, solitude, and fine dining along for the journey. I envy Early Purple’s owners and wonder where we charter guests will get to follow them next.
Early Purple is part of the charter fleet at Nautor Swan. She takes two to five guests with three crew at a lowest weekly base rate of 14,000. +44 2380 454880, [email protected]_ ;_ www.swanyachts.co.uk_ ._

HULL & APPENDAGES
Scantlings, materials, and workmanship are consistent with the construction of a light hull without sacrificing strength or stiffness. Construction The hull is of a single skin construction using glass/aramid hybrid fibre reinforced polyester laminate. A high proportion of the fibres are unidirectional, giving a stiff laminate with excellent strength and fatigue properties. Structural bulkheads are of a marine plywood and laminated to the hull and deck with foam strips. Stiffener flanges are uni-directional layup over foam core. Engine beds are of GRP and special care is taken to ensure rigid foundation and proper adhesion to Hull. The hull has been painted in white Awlgrip in October 2016. The boot top and cavita lines are in green to match the covers and exterior theme of the yacht. There is uncoloured gelcoat below the waterline and the bottom of the hull is treated with an epoxy primer for improved blister resistance, and then antifouled. Ballast keel is a lead casting with antimony and carefully finished to an accurate shape Retractable bow thruster Max Power including separate battery bank Stripes are painted in Awlgrip Wide bathing platform hydraulically operated in lieu of standard
The rudder is foam filled with GRP and a tubular tapered stock of E glass composite supported by two self-aligning roller bearings

Steering wheels can be disconnected from the steering system when autopilot is in use, and teak steering wheels with carbon spokes fitted in lieu of standard. There are two autopilots fitted for safety and both operate independently of each other.
Through hull fittings

Swan yachts are like seabirds. Nothing seems to keep them from soaring around the globe. So it was with Atem , the Nautor’s Swan 62 that last year took a break from back-to-back circumnavigations for a significant refit. The nearly 20-year old, 65-footer came to Lyman-Morse in Camden because we are a Nautor’s Swan-authorized service center.
The work included:
- Rod rigging repairs and replacement for Atem ’s roughly 85-foot spar.
- Sanding and refinishing of its vast Nautor’s-trademark teak decking.
- Refitting and repair of the rudder bearings on its performance rudders.
- Corrosion abatement on its drop-down bow thruster.
- General cleaning, cosmetic and paint work.
“This boat has always been managed by a single owner, with a young family and a professional skipper, who had just finished a trip around the world,” said Simon Castle, service manager for Lyman-Morse. “Before they went back out for another circumnavigation, we gave this terrific Swan a solid mid-life refit.”
“The work included a spiffy new Awlgrip top-coat in a highly glossy Majestic Blue.”
Here, then, are the highlight work-in-progress photos on Atem before she ships out for another lap around the planet. This was bright work indeed!

Fast, safe, easy to control and comfortable at sea: Milling of the Swan 78 deck
Yachts division
Nautor swan is continuously raising the stakes in building new models and push its boundaries, meeting its customers’ needs and fulfilling the expectations of the market with seaworthy, elegant, performing and timeless yachts..
The Swan Yachts division represents heritage, handcraftsmanship, products characterized by elegant and timeless lines that have made Nautor Swan an icon in the sailing world. The yachts are reliable against the sea hardships and the performing hulls guarantee both comfort and competitiveness during regattas. The design team is led by German Frers the renowned Argentinean yacht designer who started working with Nautor in the 80s.
The history of Swan Maxis begins early on, a few years after the establishment of Nautor. An expert client asked for a 17m Sparkman & Stephens. It was the year 1970, and the magnificent Swan 55 took shape. At the time, it was one of the largest yachts in the world to be produced in series and in fiberglass.
The Swan Maxi, from 88 to 128 feet, offers the highest expression of seaworthiness in any conditions combined with elegance, comfort, performance, style and modernity. The world class designers behind these beautiful yachts are Maestro Germàn Frers and for the interior design, Misa Poggi, while from the launch of the latest projects, the exterior design sees the addition of Lucio Micheletti’s pen to the team.
With the launch of ClubSwan yachts, Nautor marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Finnish boat builders’ remarkable history. ClubSwan Yachts is the high-performance division of Nautor Swan, offering a conceptual vision with the accent firmly upon the values of speed, technology and competitive sailing potential. Innovative solutions focused upon maximising these qualities are at the heart of ClubSwan Yacht development. The designer is Juan Kouyoumdijan, the French-Argentinean naval architect specialised in ocean racing yachts.
Born from the passion that Leonardo Ferragamo has for the marine world, the Swan Shadow is broadening the range of vassels the Finnish yard offers to its customers, perfectly aligned with the core elements of it brand DNA: Performance, Quality, Elegance. The three models are marking the completion of the Nautor Swan portfolio and product line up with three multipurpose motor yacht concepts able to meet Nautor’s customer needs.

Moscow Metro and Swan Lake
A few days ago, I went with Elena and Becky on a trip around the Moscow metro, the second most heavily used metro system in the world. I didn’t know much about it before, but it’s an architectural marvel in and of itself, a gorgeous relic from Moscow’s Soviet past and Stalinist architecture in particular. We rode around the central brown line, a circle of 12 stations that Stalin oversaw the creation/renovation of in the 1930s and 40s. All are ornately decorated with different themes (sports, French palatial architecture, Lenin portraits, etc), in a way that was intended to remind the average rider of all the ways their government was giving back to them for their hard work. Apparently, they all have an emphasis on “verticality”, essentially meaning that either the ceilings are very lavish, or the art on the walls is dimensioned to draw the eye upwards, reminding metro-goers of the place of Stalin in their lives. Below are pictures of my favorite stations.
All of the stations are fairly deep underground, hence scarily steep escalators.
Series of mosaics depicting key moments in the formation of the Soviet Union. If I get more time later I’ll dig up the names of these stations…
Bolsheviks unite!
From a station dedicated to different sports.
These gates are meant to emulate a temple, in a departure from pre-WWII atheistic style.
Becky, Elena, and Mother Russia
From a station dedicated to unnamed soldiers: this one is of an infantryman.
Station of Unnamed Soldiers
Station with fancy French ornamentation and ceiling paintings.
I was surprised by the amount of Greco-Roman inspired decoration.
And finally, my favorite: a series of geometrical stained glass windows.
To top off our time in Moscow, last night we managed to get student rush tickets (for 100 roubles, or $3!) to closing night of Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theater. The seats were terrible (it’s hard to explain how bad, but we had to stand for most of the show) but the ballet was incredible. We found out about the existence of student rush tickets/the process to get them very randomly, and as I haven’t found the process documented anywhere else, here’s a quick description: if you go to the Bolshoi at any given day starting at 6 am, you can put your name (and your group’s names) on a list for tickets to the day’s performance (it hosts ballet and opera performances on alternating days). A queue starts forming outside the theater at 2 pm, roughly based on the order of your name on the list, and tickets are handed out at 5:30 pm. Although this rushing system applies to all students, the ticket attendees might give you a hard time by refusing any non-Russian IDs (this actually happened to me, and I was only able to go as Elena’s boyfriend Luke kindly gave his up his ticket for me).
Fun fact: the Bolshoi is featured on the 100 Rouble note, and the insignia in front of the theater on the bill displays a hammer and sickle. Although hammers and sickles are still common sights around the city, the Bolshoi happens to have since switched its insignia to the logo of the modern Russian Federation, the double-headed eagle. Credit to Becky for noticing.
Seating in the Bolshoi: the big box on the right is known as Stalin’s Box. Apparently he fancied himself a connoisseur.
Exterior of the Bolshoi at Night
Random photo of the day: a small bakery at which we bought a jam bun and a small bag of glazed wheat rolls. Tiny bakeries like this are all over the place (including in the metro stations, with fully functioning mini-ovens!), and make me feel perpetually hungry as I walk around.
Bkycho (Delicious)!

You used the word “Queue”! Goodness, you’re becoming so Eurasian!
When in Rome…
(I actually had no idea that queue was a particularly European word. But I buy it.)
