Things to do in the local area

Birdham Pool Marina is a super tranquil spot – but there’s still loads to do nearby. A 20-minute walk will take you to Birdham village, where you’ll find a Nisa shop and a garden centre. As well as plants, the garden centre’s got a farm shop and a homeware section – there’s some really nice nautical stuff in there.

There’s also a bunch of nice places to eat around the village – our favourites are The Lamb Inn, Thyme and Chillies Indian, The Potager Restaurant and The Cider House Kitchen. For more food options, Chichester city centre is only a short drive (or bus ride) away.

If you want to spend some time on the beach, you’re only a few miles away from Bracklesham Bay and West Wittering beaches – you can get there by following the Salterns Way, which is a foot and cycle path that runs from Chichester to West Wittering. There’s always loads of water sports going on down there, but if that’s not your thing, there’s also some really great cafés and bistros.

Birdham Pool’s Boatyard forms part of a marine service centre with many skilled craftsmen and engineers onsite. Marine trades for all areas of boat maintenance and repair. Birdham Pool is a popular and busy boatyard. We offer the following services for boats wishing to come ashore:

  • Lift and scrub
  • Antifouling and painting
  • Stepping / unstepping and storage of masts

There are laying up facilities in the yard with space for approximately 90 craft plus limited covered storage.

Lifting Capacity - We have a new crane capable of lifting boats of up to 30 tonnes and a boat mover capable of transporting boats of up to 30 tonnes

Maintenance and Repairs - A number of skilled craftsmen and engineers operate from Birdham Marine Service Centre. From wooden boat specialists to marine engineers. Birdham Pool can be found on the southern edge of Chichester lake, inside Chichester Harbour and is a non-tidal basin except at high water springs, when the lock is operated on free flow at the top of the tide. The lock is available three hours before and four hours after Portsmouth high water within the locking hours below.

The duty Lock Keeper can be contacted on  07831 466815  or  01243 511482  during the normal operational times and VHF Channel 80 for locking instructions. Locking at other times is available by prior arrangement with the lock keeper.

Tidal gauges are located on the seaward side of the channel to Birdham Pool Waterside & Marina and on the Channel Piles. These indicate the height of the water on the lock sill.

The channel is approximately 9m in width and has adjacent mud banks on both sides. Follow line of posts leaving them 4 metres to starboard.

I can just about afford a yacht and some basic safety equipment but there is no way I can persuade my wife to part with around 2000 p.a. for marina mooring fees , which is roughly what I calculate for a 24 ft yacht. I am finding it very hard to find out about alternatives, i.e. mud berths or deepwater moorings. Can anyone point me in the right direction ( Brighton area ) and suggest what kind of ballpark costs I should expect to pay. Thanks. <hr width=100% size=1>

I'm there with you! I'm in Brighton and my husband and I have just emptied our accounts/pockets/piggy banks to buy or first yacht, a 22' Kingfisher. After extensive hunts around Sussex we decided to keep her on the Medway where her previous owners kept her, for the time being, as mooring fees around here would require re-mortgaging, and there seem to be very few spaces anyway. We can still only afford a mud berth though, and have access to the boat 1.5 hours either side of high water, which ain't ideal, but it's a start. One pissabolity is joining a yacht club - their mooring fees seem to be cheaper; though you do need to pay membership, be 'invited' to join the club and all sorts. Another option would be swing moorings around Chichester maybe, have a look at the moorings page on their great website at http://www.conservancy.co.uk/water/moorings.asp . They have varying mud berths (i.e. some accessible for 3 hours +/- HW, some for only 1, etc.). Then there's Shoreham mud berths, try Shoreham Port Authority, Coastal Marine on 01273-413121 or Riverside Marina on 01273 592456, they're both also in Shoreham. Let me know how you get on - and tell your wife it'll all be worth it! Justine <hr width=100% size=1>

I have a swinging mooring in Chichester harbour for £550 per summer for a buoy, haul-out + winter storage is about half as much again for a 29-footer (charged per foot). Our yard nearly always has spaces, PM me if you are seriously interested. A conservancy mooring would be a tad cheaper, see chichester conservancy website. Elsewhere Solent-wards will be more expensive, unless you go to IOW (even more remote, I suspect). For similar berths closer to Brighton you should be looking at Shoreham, Littlehampton, Newhaven and Rye. I know Rye, absolutely lovely place, but I suspect the waiting list is longer than you expect to live for. For Shoreham look up the threads in recent months on locking in and out. Littlehampton is charming and unsophisticated, but I've not been back there for years. Newhaven is a bit unknown to me. <hr width=100% size=1>

You've got to be kidding! We're paying £520 for 6 months, 22 footer swinging mooring on the river Percuil. Perhaps a move nearer to Malpas? might be in order! <hr width=100% size=1><A target="_blank" HREF=http://groups.msn.com/Limboyachts>http://groups.msn.com/Limboyachts</A>

Mud berths at Rye are about the cheapest on the south coast, around £25 per foot per annum last year. Changed ownership recently, I think its now being run by the Rye Partnership, if not they would know who, tel: 01797 229600. Newhaven marina used to have some cheapish half-tide berths, as did Arun YC at Littlehampton, but I'm going back a bit on both of these.

Mus could well be, no joking thats it £94 ! In the best location on the south coast, fair enough its up the river, But hey, we like the river ! <hr width=100% size=1>

think ill stay up on the moray firth about £125 per anum on a mooring...i feel for you! <hr width=100% size=1>

ruff_n_tumble

I too live in Brighton and currently have a swinging mooring in Portsmouth Harbour at about £850 pa, including water taxi, from Gosport Boatyard which I'm very happy with and it's well worth the drive - cheaper, more interesting and sheltered sailing than Brighton. Before that I was in Chichester on a swinging half-tide mooring - same considerations. When starting I took advice from a lifeboatman in Shoreham who advised me that even allowing for the drive I'd do a lot more sailing in Chichester than Shoreham or Brighton - absolutely true. <hr width=100% size=1>Steve Marsh Hunter 27 OOD "Ruff-n-Tumble" Gosport

Last year Sailing Today (I think) did a round up of the most expensive and cheapest marinas in UK. Newhaven came out the cheapest for it's mud berth marina. I can't remember the name but it's something like Meaching. It is undoubtedly very basic and you must be able to dry out (and conseuqnetly you are of course tide locked) - but you get a very cheap deal. <hr width=100% size=1>Sarah&Pip

billywilliams

Having bitten my tongue when reading previous threads on moorings & fees I am about to betray one of the secrets of The Milford Haven Waterway! There are four Yacht clubs which, on behalf of The Port Authority, administer Voluntary Controlled Areas. These are deep water swinging moorings for which we pay £3 pa re-resistration fee. I have opted for an Authority directly controlled mooring as I can keep an eye on the boat from the kitchen window. For that I pay £26pa. Owners are responsible for laying & maintaining their own mooring. We have easy access to two excellent marinas which I understand charge about 3o% of some south coast companies. We are about 4 hours by road from London and 12 hours sail to Ireland. After much deliberation our club has just inceased annual subs to £30! Sorry about all that!!! <hr width=100% size=1>

Mooring fees are just another bugbear of many of the boating folk hereabouts. Prices can be very high indeed. Just come back from Cowes week, heard that for a 30 footer one marina was quoting 5K pa. That’s double the Thames prices. I really do feel that more needs to be done by the marinas to make boating more affordable to more people. Payment terms are nearly always up front and carry costly instalments charges. Even direct debit, which I thought saved time and money, was secure and gave greater flexibility to both parties is charged for at a premium. The marina companies really do need to move more towards a more customer friendly stance and away from the elitism seen so often. On a lighter note reading the posts hear it does seem that there are several options open to you. I hope you find a suitable spot at the right price that gets you boating. Good luck Peter <hr width=100% size=1><A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mssa.org.uk>http://www.mssa.org.uk</A> Marine Service Standards Assistance

I would expect Shoreham to be your best local bet for cheaper moorings, followed by Chichester, where you can pay as little as £300 a year. If youy wanta REALLY cheap Solent half tide mooring - have a chat with Langstone Harbours HM - last time I enquired it was around £60 a year for lay your own (HM approved) mooring up at Havant. Why so cheap? Well there's a main sewage outfall, and at low tide the boats are accessible to the kids from Leigh Park.... facilities about zilch. Most Chi Harbour sailing Clubs own some moorings, which might be worth pursuing. I only pay £150 a year in Chi and can put up to a 28 footer on my mooring (4hrs- to 4 hrs + tide) - but these private licensed moorings are few and far between and may change hands for up to £2k for a prime site. <hr width=100% size=1>

  • 11 Aug 2003

It's Cantell & Sons - I know as I'm berthed there! It is a lot less expensive, a little more ragged round the edges, doesn't come with shower block or clubhouse, but does have the greatest collection of old salts who are a mine of information. Real characters, real people, real moorings, real prices. That said, France is still cheaper <hr width=100% size=1>

Birdseye

bit pricy that! chepstow yacht club is £25 membership and £1 per foot per year for mooring - 3 hours either side of tide, and all the pleasures of the bristol channel. the sensible answer is to join a club. most clubs are desperate for more members, nominations dont really apply (and would you want to join a club that did that sort of thing anyway?) and either the club will have cheaper moorings of the members will know where to find them. at the moment , as a non boat owner, non club member, you are looking in from the outside. hence the difficulty. <hr width=100% size=1>

I am on the Bristol Channel and wouldn't want to move anywhere else. Got to say, though, that Chepstow Yacht Club sounds a far better deal. <hr width=100% size=1> Tu ne quaesieris, scire nefas

Secure. Sheltered. Serene. Sorted.

Lake yard’s deep water swinging moorings are secure, sheltered and can accommodate boats of varying sizes and keel depth. they are perfectly located for exploring poole harbour and beyond. and of course don’t forget that view.

Lake Yard Moorings

Just outside the entrance to the Marina, Lake Yard has 99 deep water swinging moorings which we rent for the summer sailing season. The moorings are set either side of the Wareham Channel, in a sheltered area of deepwater between the Arne Peninsula and Lake Yard marina. We have been operating these moorings since the 1970s and we lift, inspect and service every mooring every year to ensure they are in tip top condition.

Our moorings are laid in trots, using heavy ground chain and high quality riser chain. A mooring buoy is attached to the top of the riser chain, with a numbered pick-up buoy attached by rope to the mooring buoy. Simply use a boat hook to grab the pick-up buoy and then attaching lines or strops to the top of the mooring buoy chain. The moorings are graded into ‘blocks’ to help identify them.

Lake Yard Taxi Launch

Lake Yard operates a water taxi to its swinging moorings seven days a week. The launch is operated by our Yard Team Monday to Friday (for a nominal fee) and our experienced Bosun Noel Lilley runs the launch weekends and bank holidays.

Visitor berths & moorings are usually available with a launch service to and from the club but always contact the office or Bosun Noel before berthing/mooring. During busy times our moorings/berths may look empty but most are assigned to customers who require constant access. Unless it’s an absolute emergency, please make contact before securing your vessel.

Noel can be contacted from 2pm on Fridays and from 9am to dusk on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays: VHF Channel 37 / Mobile: 07791 836524

Boat Moorings in West Sussex

Littlehampton Marina is situated in West Sussex; a covetable county on the South Coast of England.

Boat owners, particularly within the West Sussex region, are drawn to the Marina due to it’s safe, secure and easily accessible boat moorings.

The boat moorings at the Marina span three different pontoons; namely the Fuel Pontoon, the Basin Pontoon and Cruiser Pontoon. Boat owners who sign an agreement with us to take a berth on any one of these three pontoons will be allocated a mooring for the duration of their contract and will be given the option to take a boat mooring either with or without electricity.

Boat moorings at our Marina in West Sussex can be enjoyed on a seasonal or full time basis. This flexibility gives boat owners the option  to know that their boat has a safe ‘home’ for as long as they need it.

Versadock floating dock system.

At the Marina, we introduced a floating dock system or Versadock (as they are otherwise known) a couple of years ago. The decision to introduce the floating dock system was largely due to popular demand. Since we introduced the Versadock (we have fifteen of them currently at the Marina), they have proven to be extremely popular.

Our floating dock system can accommodate up to fifteen jet skis at any one time and it enables customers to dock their skis on a dry platform out of the water. The Versadock system is considered one of the most efficient means of storing boats and personal craft in a safe and convenient manner.

The Versadock floating dock system has been adopted by thousands of leading marinas across Europe and beyond, having been recognised as a new standard for effective and efficient boat storage.

Call today for the latest pricing information, or to discuss the benefits of the Versadock floating dock system in more detail.

What Are the Cheapest Mooring Fees in the UK? (& Where)

Boat mooring fees in the UK often vary depending on factors such as boat length, location, and market demand. If you're looking for the cheapest options, we're here to help you find the most budget-friendly mooring spots that still offer fantastic amenities and picturesque locations. In some popular areas, like London and the South of England, there may be waiting lists, but with a bit of patience and research, you'll be able to find the perfect spot for your boat at an affordable price.

The cheapest mooring fee starts at £1,000 and can be found in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Rochdale Canal, Huddersfield Narrow Canal, Caledonian Canal, Forth and Clyde Canal, Union Canal, River Thames, Grand Union Canal, Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, Portsmouth Moorings, Littlehampton Marina, and municipal harbors.

Be prepared to shop around and join waiting lists if necessary. Popular locations, such as London and the southern Midlands, tend to have higher demand and longer waitlists.

  • You might save on mooring costs by choosing a marina with fewer amenities or services if it meets your basic needs.

Municipal harbours offer moorings from £1,000 a year

Lastly, municipal harbors controlled by local authorities can be a more cost-effective option for mooring your boat. Some of them offer cheaper mooring rates compared to private marinas. Be on the lookout for harbors with lower fees, and keep in mind that facilities may be more limited than what you'd find in a private marina.

Municipal harbors in the UK offer mooring options for boaters, with prices varying depending on the location and facilities available. Annual fees for long-term moorings can range from around £1,000 to £5,000 or more .

In this section, we will explore swing moorings, visitor moorings, and winter moorings as potential alternatives that might suit your needs and budget.

sussex yacht club mooring fees

Swing moorings can be more affordable compared to marina berths

They usually consist of a buoy or anchor attached to a chain that allows your boat to swing with the tide and wind. To find a suitable location, browse for options on forums such as the YBW Forum . Prices will vary depending on the area, but swing moorings are generally cheaper than a full-service marina.

Visitor moorings are specifically designed for short-term use

If you're just passing through an area or need a temporary place to moor your boat, visitor moorings can be a cost-effective option. These moorings are specifically designed for short-term use, usually ranging from 24 hours to a few weeks. While not intended for long-term stays, they can provide a convenient and economical alternative when needed. Prices will depend on the location and facilities available, but visitor moorings are usually cheaper than a permanent berth.

Winter moorings can be your option during the off-season

As demand for moorings often decreases during the winter months, many marinas and mooring providers offer discounted rates for long-term stays. This allows you to keep your boat securely moored at a lower cost while also freeing up space in the marina during the busier summer months. To find winter mooring options in the UK, check out websites like the Canal & River Trust for available locations and pricing.

Now, let's explore the following factors that will influence mooring fees in the UK : the size of your boat, the location and demand, and the amenities and services of the marina.

sussex yacht club mooring fees

Length and width of the boat : The size of your boat, including its length and width, is a significant factor in determining the mooring fees you'll be charged. Most marinas and mooring facilities charge fees based on your boat's dimensions. The larger and wider your boat is, the higher the mooring fees will be. Be sure to consider your boat's size when comparing mooring costs.

Location and demand : Mooring fees can vary significantly based on location and demand. Popular boating areas or locations with limited availability tend to have higher mooring costs. On the other hand, locations with lower boat traffic or more mooring options may have cheaper fees. When searching for a more cost-effective mooring option in the UK, consider lesser-known areas or those with less demand.

Amenities and services : The facilities and services offered by the marina can also affect the mooring fees. Marinas with more comprehensive amenities and services tend to charge higher fees. These amenities could include wifi access, fuel services, waste disposal, security systems, and onsite maintenance services.

In this section, we'll discuss the differences in price between long-term vs. short-term moorings, marinas vs. private moorings, and residential vs. non-residential options.

Long term vs short term mooring fees

Long-term mooring fees are generally priced according to boat length and the popularity of the area . Demand may result in higher prices in the south, where land prices are highest, and sites with more sophisticated services command higher fees.

On the other hand, short-term mooring fees can vary depending on the location and services offered . While it is generally more cost-effective to go for a long-term mooring, make sure to consider your specific needs and how often you'll use the mooring before making a decision.

Marinas vs private moorings

Marinas provide a range of services and facilities that may result in higher fees compared to private moorings. However, it's important to consider what services you require, as private moorings may lack the conveniences you desire.

Weigh the pros and cons of each type of mooring to find the best fit for your budget and needs.

Residential vs non-residential

Residential moorings are designed for those who live full-time on their boats, and these fees usually include utility usage and additional amenities. Non-residential moorings offer a lower-cost solution for those who only need a mooring for recreational purposes. However, you should be aware that residing on a non-residential mooring, even temporarily could result in fines or eviction from the mooring site.

In this section, we'll explore some methods for finding the cheapest mooring fees in the UK, with a focus on online platforms, networking with other boaters, and contacting local marinas and harbors.

sussex yacht club mooring fees

Use online platforms to compare mooring fees and services

The internet is a treasure trove of information when it comes to finding affordable mooring deals. Use online resources, such as boats.com , to compare mooring fees and services across different locations in the UK. Don't forget about social media groups and forums dedicated to boating, where fellow boaters may share their experiences and recommendations for cost-effective moorings.

Network with boaters to gather information about mooring options

Nothing beats word-of-mouth recommendations from experienced boaters. Network with fellow boating enthusiasts, either in person or through online forums like Canal World . By connecting with others who share your passion for boating, you can gather valuable information about hidden gems and the most affordable mooring options.

Contact local marinas and harbours to inquire about mooring fees

Reaching out directly to marinas and harbors is another effective way to find the best mooring deals in the UK. By contacting these establishments, you'll be able to inquire about their pricing, available services, and any special discounts or promotions they may have. In certain cases, you may even be able to negotiate a better rate for longer-term mooring agreements. Keep your options open and always maintain a friendly, professional tone when inquiring about mooring fees.

Boat owners want limit on increase in mooring fees

Boat owners in Guernsey want a limit on the proposed increase in marina mooring fees.

When surveyed, the majority of Guernsey Yacht Club's members were not in favour of the suggested increase.

A spokesperson for the club said local boat owners should not be paying for "expenditure not attributable to them and, in particular, the large deficit incurred in running the airport".

They pointed out that parts of the harbour are available for use by all, free of charge, and this should be considered when discussing charges.

In previous years, mooring fees have risen in line with inflation.

The proposal to increase 2024 mooring fees will be made at the March States meeting.
