Offshore sailing honoring those who served
NORTH SEA OFFSHORE RACING
Welcome to the Convoy Cup North Sea Rally web site!
The first Convoy Cup North Sea Rally was organized in 2017. The rally is both working for increasing the number of yachts participating in safe and social offshore sailing in the North Sea area and honoring the norwegian war sailors from the second world war.
This web site will facilitate the training of crew and skippers and register offshore sailing capabilities of sailing vessels, skippers and crew members.
NORTH SEA YACHT RACE AND CONVOY CUP
Races for sailing yachts have been organized between Norway and Scotland since 1984. The first race was called the North Sea Yacht Race and was going between the south west coast of Norway and MacDuff. From 2009 Stord Seilforening and Karmøy Seiforening has organized the Convoy Cup North Sea Race from Karmøy to the Orkney Islands.
The Shetland Race is another offshore race going from Bergen to Shetland. This race was started in 1986 and is still going strong.
The North Sea Yacht Race was conceived in early 1984 as a way for a group of Scottish sailors to safely cross the North Sea. The idea quickly grew and on 2 July 1984 twenty-two yachts from Scotland, England and Norway headed out across the North Sea for Stavanger. Since then, the race grew from strength to strength with as many as 50 yachts taking part in some years. The start alternated between Scotland and Norway giving the event a unique attraction for entrants from both sides of the North Sea. Most competitors took the opportunity to cruise the Norwegian fjords or go through the Caledonian Canal before returning home.
The race record between Macduff and Stavanger is held by Skaarungen, a Wasa 50 ft monohull . Their elapsed time of 30 hours 44 minutes was set in 1998 in an east-bound direction. The fastest west-bound crossing was made by Undarousa, a 45 ft trimaran from Oslo in 31 hours and 9 minutes in 2001. In 2007, the race started in Skudeneshavn, approximately 12 miles closer to Macduff than Stavanger, and Hei Matau, a 36ft trimaran from Port Edgar, Edinburgh, made the crossing in just under 29 hours.
In 2009, the Convoy Cup North Sea Race headed for Mainland on the Orkneys. This race also included a tradition of honoring the warsailors from the second world war. The sailors got a warm welcome in Kirkwall by Orkney Sailing Club and the Norway Orkney Friendship Association.
The Convoy Sailors Club believe that it's possible to engage more of the increasing number of sailing yachts cruising along the North Sea coasts to join offshore racing. This requires a transfer of knowledge from experienced sailors to potentially new offshore racing skippers and crew members.
More effort is required to make this happen. The Convoy Sailors Club will engage themselves for this and for strengthening the bonds between sailors from all North Sea coastlines.

North Sea Regatta 2021
Activity level, event language.
About event
Start : Scheveningen, The Hague, Netherlands
Finish : Scheveningen, The Hague, Netherlands
The North Sea Regatta is the largest sailing event along the Dutch North Sea Coast and this year we have something to celebrate! It is the 75th anniversary of the Vuurschepen Race and that deserves a celebration. For this special anniversary edition, we are planning some surprises, in addition to competitive racing and fun filled social program ashore to mix and mingle with fellow competitors, friends, and family.
This year the 120-mile Vuurschepenrace from Scheveningen (NL) to Harwich (UK) will open the annual North Sea Regatta. After a lay day in Harwich, the IRC, ORC, and SW classes will return to the Netherlands, sailing the 180NM R.O.R.C. North Sea Race. The North Sea Regatta inshore races will take place in Scheveningen!
This is my first time, is this ok?
Beginners without experience can participate in the regatta, since on the yacht there is always a professional skipper with extensive experience who will teach you everything you need for your role on the boat. In addition, as a rule, there are experienced yachtsmen in the crew who will help you get settled and feel comfortable.
What is included and not included in the price?
As a rule, the cost of participation in the regatta includes:.
— accommodation on a yacht for the duration of the regatta;
— bed linen and towels;
— organizational fee;
— skipper services;
— the cost of mooring in marinas;
— basic sailing training;
— a yacht polo or t-shirts from the organizers.
Additional expenses you will need to pay:
— airplane tickets and transfer to the marina;
— a visa. However, we will give you an invitation and confirmation of accommodation booking for the embassy. Visas for sporting events are easy to get;
— personal expenses.

No comments, be the first one!
Can i participate in a regatta if i don’t have yachting experience.
Yes, of course. There will be an experienced skipper and team members on the yacht. They will give you a role and teach you everything you need to know to be a useful team member and feel comfortable.
Will I be able to steer a yacht?
Yes, all team members will definitely try themselves in different roles to better understand each other. Standing at the helm is an integral part of training for beginners as well as setting sails, and helping the team during moorings.
Where will I live during the regatta?
As a rule, participants in the regatta live on the yacht. The boat has everything you need for a comfortable stay: nice beds, a kitchen, a shower with toilet. If you do not want to live on a yacht, then you can arrange to stay at the hotel onshore.
What will we eat?
The crew decides altogether what kind of food they prefer to eat and makes necessary purchases. Simple dishes can be cooked, usually taking turns. Some regattas offer daily meals and intensive evening program for all crews.
Do you help with a visa?
We can make an invitation for a visa, but you need to apply for a visa by yourself.
Will I have seasick? What should I do if I have sickness?
Most people tolerate some seasickness easily. If you feel that you are starting to feel sick, it is best to get at the steering wheel or tune the sails. Get yourself busy, show your body that you don’t have time to get sick, you have to fight for victory in the race. There are also many quite effective medicines from sickness. If you start taking them in advance, then the probability of seasickness is almost zero.
How and where will I meet the crew and the captain?
Before each trip, we organize an online meeting where participants get to know each other and the captain. The captain will answer all your questions. The crew will have a group chat so you can get to know each other before the start of the regatta. Then you will meet in the marina.
What clothes do I need?
The main rule is to dress comfortably and according to the weather. Clothing: • windbreaker and pants or shorts; • shirt/jacket with UV protection (thermal underwear and fleece); • adjustable hat/cap; • gloves. We recommend to purchase a long-sleeved jacket with UV protection in order to protect yourself from the sun and strong wind. Yachting shoes should be: • light, with non-slip white outsole; • with the fixed heel; • with a tightly closed nose. During the sailing without shoes, you can fall or injure your fingers and feet on the deck. There are many protruding parts on the boat that are easy to catch. Unfortunately, even experienced sailors are not protected from unpleasant injuries when they ignore this simple rule.
