Destriero, a name that in the Middle Ages indicated the most daring and courageous workhorse, as daring and courageous was thirty years ago the idea of creating the fastest ship of all time, a project entrusted to Donald Blount who made use of the support of Pininfarina, built in record time by Fincantieri in the Muggiano shipyard between 1990 and the first months of 1991. Artemare remembers it with the exhibition of objects, documents and books at its headquarters in Corso Antico in Porto Santo Stefano.
Il Destriero, an aluminum ship of 67.7 meters in length with a displacement hull at the bow and planing at the stern, with hydrojet propulsion and 60,000 horsepower, built by Fincantieri in the Muggiano and Riva Trigoso shipyards in the record time of 270 days , until that moment the largest light alloy ship ever built, one of the naval vessels with the highest concentration of efficiency, power and technology, fitted the most powerful waterjets ever developed, the hull demonstrated remarkable energy efficiency and propulsive performance with in acceleration and deceleration equal to those of a racing car. It was the first ship to cross the Atlantic with turbines associated with hydrojets, rather than diesel engines associated with propellers, and this revolution marked the beginning of the
Cesare Quondamatteo and Carlo Chiara motorists and technicians Davide Maccario, Giacomo Petriccione, Giuseppe Valenti and Michael Hurrle. For all the innovations, designs and technologies adapted to the world of the sea, the model of the Destriero was used by the US Navy for the construction of the “Litoral Combat Ships”, fast boats for coastal surveillance. The fate of the Destriero was not as prestigious, however, since the beginning of 2012 the unit is in Germany at the Lürssen shipyard near Bremen and appears to be in poor conservation conditions.
Some curiosities in the frame, the sponsor Fiat of this enterprise presented in the spring of 1992 at its stand at the Turin Motor Show a prototype called Destriero, in practice a tender on four wheels available to the crew in Porto Cervo and resuming the fashion of the “Spiaggine” of the sixties, two specimens based on the Panda car were built by the Stola of Turin, both approved with the authorization of Fiat, the first colored in a light blue sea water with white interiors, the second dark blue with the interiors light gray that was donated by the Fiat Style Center to the lawyer Gianni Agnelli.

The 9th of August is a historic date for the Italian shipbuilding industry, marking 30 years of a record that still stands undefeated, set by the ship Destriero. Since 1992 the "Blue Riband" for the Atlantic crossing has belonged to all those who participated in the design and construction of the ship and the realisation of the challenge.
On 6 August 1992, Destriero, a fantastic example of Italian naval technology, left behind the Ambrose Light in New York, the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the Verrazzano bridge to embark on the record-breaking attempt.
At dawn on 9 August 1992, at 6.14 a.m. and 50 seconds, staff manning the Bishop Rock lighthouse in the Scilly isles off England, still shrouded in fog, were surprised to hear the voice of Cesare Fiorio over the radio: “Good Morning, this is the commander of the ship Destriero, we left from New York, please register the date and time of our passage." "Good morning Destriero, we were not expecting you so soon..." was the operator’s reply.
Destriero, flying the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda burgee, had covered 3,106 miles in 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds, at an average speed of 53.09 knots, or 98.323 km/h, taking 21 hours less than the English catamaran Hoverspeed, holder of the previous record.
Waiting for the crew on their arrival was H.H. the Aga Khan, President of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the main supporter of the project. In addition to the Blue Riband, Destriero was also awarded the New York Yacht Club's Columbus Atlantic Trophy and the Virgin Atlantic Challenge Trophy, created by Richard Branson.
The Destriero Challenge was born from H.H. the Aga Khan's passion for new naval technologies He promoted the project with the support of the leading representatives of the Italian industrial sector of the time: Giovanni Agnelli (Fiat), Franco Nobili (IRI), Umberto Nordio (Alitalia) and Arrigo Gattai (CONI) and prestigious sponsors such as Agip, General Electric, MTU and KaMeWa.
The name, Destriero, in the Middle Ages indicated the most daring and courageous of steeds, just as the idea of building the fastest ship of all time was a daring and courageous one in 1990. The design was entrusted to Donald Blount, who called on the support of Pininfarina, and was built in record time by Fincantieri at the Muggiano shipyard.
Thanks to all the innovations, design and technologies developed, the Destriero project marked a decisive step forward in the technological progress of shipbuilding.
The crew that took part in the enterprise was composed of: Cesare Fiorio - captain and head of the Destriero Challenge project, Odoardo Mancini - captain, Aldo Benedetti - second in command, Sergio Simeone - first officer, Franco De Mei - telecommunications operator, Giuseppe Carbonaro - machine director, Mario Gando and Nello Andreoli - machinists, Massimo Robino - electrician, Silvano Federici and Cesare Quondamatteo - engine technicians, Davide Maccario - automation technician, Giacomo Petriccione - propulsion technician, Michael Hurrle - turbine technician.
The goal was to claim the Atlantic crossing speed record, and it was achieved. For 30 years now, Destriero has been the fastest ship in the world.

A General Description of Motor Yacht DESTRIERO
This motor yacht DESTRIERO is a 68 m 224 (ft) significant aluminium boat which was built by Fincantieri Yachts - Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani and devised by Cmn and Donald L Blount & Assoc and Pininfarina.
This yacht was built as a jet powered yacht which still holds the transatlantic speed record. When built she had three GE LM1600 gas turbines fitted giving her a maximum speed of 110 km/h (59.4 Knots, 68.4 MPH). Yacht DESTRIERO then competed for the Blue Riband award in 1992, creating a still to be bettered speed record of 53.1 knots average from New York to England without refueling. Unfortunately, she as considered a ‘private yacht’ as opposed to a ‘commercial passenger vessel’ and denied the award. The ship was "laid up" in for the last 10 years, but was removed in February 2009[3], reportedly for After spending 10 years at the HMNB Devonport dockyard, Plymouth, England, motor yacht DESTRIERO was moved to the German Lürssen ship yard in 2009.
The New Build & Naval Architecture with respect to Luxury Yacht DESTRIERO
Cmn was the naval architect involved in the professional vessel design work for DESTRIERO. Cmn and Donald L Blount & Assoc and Pininfarina is also associated with the yacht wider design collaboration for this boat. In 1991 she was formally launched to celebration in Muggiano and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the owner who commissioned her. Fincantieri Yachts - Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani completed their new build motor yacht in Italy. The core hull was built out of aluminium. The motor yacht superstructure component is made mostly using aluminium. With a beam of 12.91 m / 42.4 feet DESTRIERO has open room. She had refit improvement and changes completed by 2000.
M/Y DESTRIERO Main Engines & Speed:
Installed with triple GEC/MTU codog main engines, DESTRIERO can attain a top speed of 66 knots. She is driven by tripple water jets (kamewa). She also has an efficient range of 3500 miles when sailing at her cruise speed of 50 knots. Her total HP is 54990 HP and her total Kilowatts are 40464.

Heir to a long line of record-setting ships, Destriero earned the Virgin Atlantic Challenge Trophy for the fastest one-way Atlantic crossing in 1992 with an average speed of 53 knots. That same year she also won the Columbus Atlantic Trophy for the fastest round-trip Atlantic crossing. Her gas turbines carry her 222’ (67m) frame with 52,000 horsepower. When she was launched, she was the largest aluminum boat on the water with the biggest waterjets designed and manufactured at the time. DLBA is proud to have spearheaded her naval architecture.

How close did German troops come to Moscow during World War II?
German units just ahead of Moscow.
In the Fall and Winter of 1941, Soviet troops stopped the Wehrmacht on the outskirts of the Soviet capital at the cost of tremendous efforts and huge sacrifices. The Nazis managed to come closest to the city only from the north-western direction.
On November 30, units of the 2nd Panzer Division of Lieutenant General Rudolf Fayel occupied the village of Krasnaya Polyana (today – a microdistrict of the town of Lobnya, Moscow Region). The distance to the administrative border of Moscow from there in a straight line was about 17 kilometers and to the Kremlin – a little more than 30.
The settlement was located on a hill and the Germans planned to place long-range artillery there to bombard the center of the Soviet capital. They had no doubt that the Red Army was on the brink of disaster and were preparing for a decisive assault.
"We stand near Moscow as victors and before our mental gaze in a blood-red glow arise burning city blocks, countless domes of cathedrals and the walls of the Kremlin! I wish it would come true sooner!" This was what, according to the memoirs of Colonel Luitpold Steidle, many German soldiers thought in those days.
However, such dreams were not destined to come true. On December 5, completely unexpected for the Nazis, Soviet troops launched a major counter-offensive and, three days later, liberated Krasnaya Polyana.
