ICONIC YACHTS: HOW THE NAVY FRIGATE YAS WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A DOLPHIN-INSPIRED SUPERYACHT.
“ This concept is a little bit different than the others ,” says designer Jacques Pierrejean on his studio’s Youtube channel about the iconic yacht Yas . Take one look at the 141-metre motor yacht, and you know this is an understatement to say the least. Many a yacht claims to be entirely unique, but few truly are. The iconic yacht Yas is one of the rare exceptions – with her slim frigate hull, dolphin-inspired exterior and massive panes of glass on her forward superstructure, it’s safe to say there isn’t another yacht like her out there.
Known as Project Swift during her refit, the yachting community waited in anticipation to see the final product emerge. Though the hull was launched in 2011, her completion and interior outfitting took four years, and it wasn’t until 2015 that Yas was delivered and spotted cruising in the Mediterranean. Greenline Yacht Interiors worked on the fit-out of the yacht’s expansive interior spaces.
Yas took a circuitous route to become the iconic yacht that she is today. The bones of the yacht were military in nature. Launched in 1977, she was originally a 135-metre Dutch-built navy frigate named HNLMS Piet Hein. Built by Koninklijke Schelde shipyard in The Netherlands, she served the Royal Dutch Navy for more than 20 years. After that, she changed hands a number of times before ending up in the UAE, serving its military from 1998 to 2006.
When the military was done with her, the vessel was acquired by an owner who wanted to turn her into a private vessel, with all of the work carried out in the UAE. Jacques Pierrejean was hired to make this a reality, with the rebuild taking place at ADM Shipyards in the UAE. As is the story with many refits, the scope of the work was initially much smaller and the timeline much shorter. But it was soon discovered that the majority of the hull would have to be rebuilt. This gave the opportunity for the look of the yacht to be entirely reimagined.
Pierrejean’s design philosophy centres around being inspired by nature, so he proposed the porpoise-like shape and huge swaths of forward glass that make Yas stand out from the rest of the superyacht fleet. “ We wanted to go with a frigate shaped hull and have the feeling of a dolphin ,” says Pierrejean.
Frigates are warships that are built for speed and easy manoeuvring, and they are often typified narrow hulls that improve efficiency and performance. It was these aspects that drew the eventual private owner of Yas to the former navy ship. “ The hull is like a sailing boat, it’s like a knife ,” says Pierrejean. This slim hull helps contribute to Yas’s high performance – she cruises at 25 knots and can reach a top speed of 30 knots, powered by twin Rolls-Royce gas turbine engines.
The need for a more extensive rebuild also provided a chance to extend the length of the hull. The designer proposed extending the aft section by about 12 metres. This extension added to the fluidity of the exterior lines and provided space for an aft pool area, which has a waterfall flowing into it. Other amenities on board Yas include a spa tub and helicopter deck.
But the noticeable aspect of this yacht has to be her unusual forward superstructure made entirely of glass. This giant glass dome houses the bridge as well as the owner’s suite. This allows the interior spaces to truly feel open to the sea, says the designer. “ Changing the exterior changed the interior ,” Pierrejean says. Beyond her unusual looks, Yas also stands out with her sizable accommodations for up to 60 guests.
Yas’s iconic looks are sure to help this extraordinary vessel stand apart from the pack for years to come. “ [Yas is] our most important project ,” says Pierrejean. “ We are very proud to be able to do such a project and thank the owner of the boat for trusting in us .”

YAS Yacht – High-end $180M Superyacht
The YAS yacht is a 141-meter (463 ft) superyacht that was originally a Dutch navy ship before being converted into a luxury vessel.
The price of YAS is reported to lie close to US $180 million, and she is ranked in 11th place on the list of largest superyachts in the world.
YAS yacht interior
The interior of the YAS yacht was designed by Pierrejean, a French design, and architecture studio specializing in luxury aircraft and ship design.
The yacht can welcome up to 60 guests, which is impressive and rare in the superyacht industry. 56 crew members find space below the deck.
The interior of the yacht features glass elevators, a spa, a gym, and highly futuristic design elements.
The large glass dome at the front of the vessel houses the owner’s suite, which has an oval shape and is completed by a round bed.
Of course, the YAS yacht has a state-of-the-art entertainment system and is furnished using only the most high-quality materials.
Specifications
YAS is a converted Dutch navy ship that was originally constructed in 1977 and served in the military for 20 years.
At the time, she was named HNLMS Piet Hein and only measured 135 meters (442 ft).
She was eventually sold to the UAE military, where she served until 2006 and converted into a superyacht at ADM Shipyards.
YAS has little resemblance with a warship today, but she has kept her agility and speed. Despite her size, she can reach top speeds of 30 knots and sails comfortably at average speeds of 25 knots.
She was a beam of 14.4 meters (47.3 ft) and a draft of 4.75 meters (15.7 ft). Her total weight lies at 5,002 tons which can be attributed to her impressive steel hull.
She was recently refitted in Germany and relaunched in 2021.
YAS is an unusual yacht in many ways. Both her interior and exterior were designed by the French studio Pierrejean and she is said to have been modeled to resemble a dolphin with her immense glass superstructure.
She is a very long yacht with an aerodynamic shape that allows her to retain speed while still looking elegant and luxurious.
YAS has a helipad, spacious storage for water toys, and, of course, several pools on board for the enjoyment of the guests.
The original price for YAS is estimated to lie close to US $180 million, although she has since been refit which suggests that her current value might lie closer to US $200 million.

“ La Datcha is a luxury vessel designed for serious exploration,” says owner’s representative Stefano Feltrin. By serious , he means ends-of-the-earth exploration, and not just a trip around the Caribbean. The just-delivered 252-foot superyacht, the first SeaXplorer from Damen Yachting, will be proving its pedigree in the next few months, with extreme-sports trips planned to Kamchatka, a remote Russian peninsula on the Pacific, and afterwards to Antarctica.

Taking a Bow: How Yacht Makers Are Rethinking the Rear End
While the owner will love this unique shakedown cruise, La Datcha is also armed with a raft of custom features geared towards making it one of the most advanced charter yachts to ever hit water.
The Polar Code-compliant boat is capable of being autonomous at sea for up to 40 days. It is also the first yacht to carry two commercially certified helicopters in separate garages. When one helicopter has taken off from the heli-deck aft, the second is maneuvered into position on a custom-built trolley. “It takes only a few minutes to transit the helicopters from parking, to the helideck and then to flight,” Feltrin told Robb Report .

The significance of a two-heli setup comes into its own, once the yacht reaches the extremely remote waters of Kamchatka in March. Rarely visited by superyachts, it is a diverse cruising ground rich in wolverines, geysers, volcanoes and, for the owner, heli-skiing.
“The area’s extreme-sport offering is limited by the types of helicopters available, so we’ll be using the boat as a floating helipad and exploring some of the never-before-skied slopes,” says Feltrin.
The owner plans to stay in Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands for summer 2021, before heading to Antarctica in November, and then exploring Chile and Patagonia. Safety regulations for heli-skiing in these areas mandate a strict two-helicopter minimum rule. Typically, guests work around this requirement by chartering two boats, which means La Datcha ’s setup gives the boat a real edge as a charter proposition.
The yacht will journey to remote regions like Antarctica, so participants can engage in extreme sports like heli-skiing and nitrox diving. Courtesy Damen
“The SeaXplorer is a moving platform on which to do outdoor activities,” says Feltrin, CEO of the La Datcha Tinkoff Collection, which also includes a number of shoreside properties. “We’ve taken great care to create a number of redundancy systems on board so that we can operate at all longitudes with proper connections.”
These include a fully certified hospital emergency room, with remote connection to a 24/7 doctor on call and crew with medical training. A three-passenger submarine for diving the waters of French Polynesia and Papua New Guinea. A state-of-the-art scuba diving center equipped with an onboard decompression chamber and enough compressed air and Nitrox to allow all 12 guests to dive together for as long as they choose.
“We can actually be on the water for seven days, never go on land and still manage a full day of diving, every day, for all the guests,” says Feltrin.
Along with a glass observation lounge and other refined interior spaces, La Datcha has a certified hospital emergency room, three-passenger submersible, and state-of-the-art scuba center. It can stay on the water autonomously for 40 days. Damen
A glass observation lounge is a key feature of the SeaXplorer series, but La Datcha ’s lounge, with its open terrace on the bow and sculpture by Italian artist Gio Pomodoro, is larger than was originally planned.
The exterior is a collaboration between Damen and Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture, while the interior is by Vasiliy Shprits. La Datcha is Shprits’ debut yacht, but the style is consistent with the contemporary and warm interiors he has designed for the owner’s property portfolio.
Key areas on board include a guest staircase with backlit rubber walls that gradually change color throughout the day, and a dual master suite layout designed to accommodate friends and families to charter together while also enjoying the equal-sized master and VIP cabins.
The yacht is the first of Damen’s SeaXplorer series, though modifications were made to enhance the owner’s love of extreme sports. Courtesy Damen
“The owner was heavily involved in the design of the yacht,” Shprits told Robb Report . “He gave his input for all of the important styling decisions and so feels a real connection to the vessel.”
La Datcha may have been conceived as a charter yacht with an ambitious itinerary, but the owner intends to spend as much time as possible on board with his family in each destination. “We plan to go to Tuscany and spend a week in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on the way down to Antarctica,” says Feltrin. “So, for those areas, we’ll drop anchor right in front of the owner’s La Datcha homes.”

Flying Luxury: Four Helicopters Ready to Serve Your Superyacht
It’s only a superyacht if it has its own chopper.
Owners of magnificent, explorer class superyachts know a helicopter is their ship’s lifeline. They provide that crucial connection to the mainland when your ship is navigating the open seas and, at any given time, can serve as a workhorse or a flying Range Rover P530.
For VIPs, business meetings or private gatherings can take place while at sea, far from the long lenses of paparazzi. Guests can arrive and depart as desired, using your helicopter. At other times, the aircraft can be used to resupply the ship or, in an emergency, become an ambulance.
And let’s be real, the best experiences, like champagne with your beloved, or surf and turf with friends, are always made better with turquoise seas as a backdrop. Flight gives superyacht owners the freedom to conduct business on the mainland before ferrying guests back to the vessel for an unforgettable Mediterranean sunset.
Fortunately, industry leading aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus , Bell and Sikorsky , have helicopters ready to serve on the world’s premier superyachts. They know the right aircraft allows these vessels to reach their full potential.
Here are four state-of-the-art choppers ready to ensure their superyachts provide an unrivaled adventure for its owner and guests.
Airbus ACH145
Making our list are two helicopters from Airbus, including the ACH 145, a helicopter ready to operate on today’s largest and most luxurious superyachts. The ACH 145 is a highly customizable aircraft with eight unique layouts , including a version with fine leather and wood finishes designed in collaboration with Mercedes Benz . The cabins in these aircraft also feature wide, panoramic windows, ensuring passengers can take in all the sights from 10,000 feet.
In terms of aircraft performance, these aircraft are capable of transporting as many as nine passengers at a range of up to 420 miles, according to Airbus . And with a maximum cruise speed of about 157 miles per hour, the ACH145 is the ideal transport if you’re looking to fly in friends and family for that sunset. However, if you’re a VIP with more intimate tastes, this chopper can be designed around four passengers with full amenities and space to spare.
Airbus H160
Airbus’ second helicopter on this list represents a leap forward for aircraft operating from superyachts. With a maximum speed of roughly 172 miles per hour, this medium helicopter is more environmentally friendly with reduced fuel consumption and an impressive operating range of 546 miles. And, like its sister aircraft the ACH145, this helicopter comes equipped with some impressive tech. Both the Airbus H160 and its sister the Airbus ACH145 feature advanced avionics and technology such the Helionix™ flight deck with its “intuitive software, synthetic vision system and four-axis automatic pilot with complete envelope protection,” resulting in class leading “precision and control” for its pilot, explains Airbus.
These features along with its reduced noise signature from its Blue Edge™ rotor blades make the H160 a class leading medium helicopter ready for service on a superyacht.
BELL FCX-001
Bell Flight’s FCX-001 seems to come straight out of science fiction in both its design and function. Anticipating automated flight of the future, Bell is equipping its aircraft with forward-looking design changes such as a single seat cockpit and a pilot guided by artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality.
The Bell FCX-001 is currently designed to hold up to 12 passengers in floating luxury and an interior that looks like it was taken out of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 : A Space Odyssey. But instead of docking with a space station, these aircraft are primed to be the perfect companion for the superyachts of the future.
Sikorsky S-76D
Last, and certainly not least, the Sikorsky S-7D, from the legendary aircraft manufacturer. Known for its military aircraft such as the Blackhawk helicopter and Marine One, the personal helicopter of the President of the United States, the S-7D is the Lockheed-owned Sikorsky’s latest commercial offering for VIP transport and superyacht operations.
As does the Airbus Ach145, the S-7D offers a range of customizations for its cabins, with the manufacturer ready to work with clients to guarantee the aircraft fits the needs and preferences of its owners, according to the company.
Buyers and their designers can pick from a selection of exquisite “fabrics, leathers, colors and amenities and features” to ensure the flight experience is a reflection of the exclusive experience you want for yourself and the guests ready to share in your superyacht’s journey.
Sikorsky’s executive chopper is also built around a noise- and vibration-resilient flight experience thanks to its Quiet Zone™ transmission technology. This makes for a smoother ride when traversing difficult, marine weather.
Fitting upwards to eight passengers in the cabin configuration that works best for its owner, the S-7D has a maximum cruising speed of about 178 miles per hour. But what makes this chopper standout the most is its military roots. According to Sikorsky, the helicopter’s main rotor hub is drawn from the rotor hub of the UH-60 Black Hawk, a chopper that has served extensively in the United States’ military.
In designing this latest version of its VIP helicopter, Sikorsky touts its extensive record deploying helicopters on military and high performance commercial missions like support on oil rigs. With superyachts deploying in all types of climates and weather conditions, including arctic seas , the Sikorsky is surely a top contender for any owner or superyacht chartering company.

Superyacht ‘Yas’ returns to the port of Spain’s Malaga
The craft is one of the largest yachts in the world, and the biggest to sail into the new Malaga port facility since it was opened.
ONE of the largest megayachts in the world has sailed into Malaga.
Completing its third visit to the port of Malaga, the megayacht marina welcomed luxury vessel ‘Yas’ yesterday, Thursday may 11, where it currently shares the quay with the Mayan Queen IV, another large yacht which has been stationed at the marina for several weeks.
The Yas, as it is known today, is actually the second life of a naval ship. Initially built between 1977 and 1981 as a frigate which, under the name Piet Hein F-811, sailed for the Royal Netherlands Navy.
In 1998, the United Arab Emirates took over the ship and christened it Al Emirat.
Having completed its life as a military ship, in 2005 its current owner, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al Nahyan, took over the ship for its conversion into a large yacht, work which was carried out at the ADM shipyard in Abu Dhabi, with its interior refurbished by French designers House Pierrejean Vision Design Studio.
One of the main features of the Yas is undoubtedly its size, at 141-metres-long this craft is one of the largest yachts in the world, and the biggest to sail into the new port facility since it was opened.
The megayacht, which also boasts a swimming pool and heliport, is capable of carrying up to 60 guests and 56 crew members. The facilities include a beauty salon and a lift. Powered by two diesel engines, she cruises comfortably at 23 knots, with a top speed of 26 knots and a range of up to 5,758 nautical miles.
Now, in what is her third berth in Malaga, the superyacht Yas arrives with a planned stay of several days; which open to last minute changes could see this impressive vessel moored at dock one until Sunday May 14..

Two Russian jets and two helicopters reportedly downed
Guardian foreign correspondent Luke Harding reporting from Kyiv.
There are unconfirmed reports that another plane and helicopter has crashed, in what appears to be a disastrous day for Russian aviation. Moscow Telegram channels reported that an SU-35 warplane had been shot down too, together with a second Mi8 helicopter.
Another military helicopter crashed on Friday in Crimea. It was unclear whether the two aircraft and two helicopters were downed on Saturday because of friendly fire, or if the Ukrainians targeted them with missiles.
A summary of today's developments
The Russian news outlet Kommersant reported that two Russian fighter jets and two military helicopters had been shot down on Saturday close to the Ukrainian border . Kommersant said on its website that the Su-34 fighter-bomber, Su-35 fighter and two Mi-8 helicopters had made up a raiding party, and had been “shot down almost simultaneously” in an ambush in the Bryansk region, adjoining northeast Ukraine .
A 15-year-old girl was among two people killed and ten people were injured in a Russian shelling attack , Ukraine’s defence ministry said. The eastern city of Kostyantynivka was targeted by Smerch rocket launchers, it added.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy held talks in Italy with the prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, President Sergio Mattarella and Pope Francis . The trip is Zelenskiy’s first to Italy since Russia invaded on 24 February last year.
Ukrainian forces have regained at least a kilometre of territory in Bakhmut amid a Russian withdrawal that reflects Moscow’s “severe shortage of credible combat units”, the UK Ministry of Defence has said in its latest intelligence briefing. It said elements of a Russian brigade withdrew “in bad order” from their positions on the southern flank of the eastern Ukrainian city, the scene of the war’s longest battle. The brigade had been “dogged with allegations of poor morale and limited combat effectiveness”.
Zelenskiy will be received in Berlin on Sunday , German government sources told Reuters on Saturday, as the leader seeks to shore up support from key allies against Russia’s invasion. The Ukrainian leader last visited Germany for the Munich security council in February last year just before the war broke out.
The German government will provide further military equipment worth €2.7bn (£2.4bn) to Ukraine in what would be the biggest Berlin has provided since Russia’s invasion. The package includes 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, 30 Leopard 1 tanks, 15 Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, 200 reconnaissance drones, four additional Iris-T anti-aircraft systems including ammunition, additional artillery ammunition and more than 200 armoured combat and logistics vehicles, according to Der Spiegel .
Russian attacks injured three people in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, the city’s mayor said. The strikes occurred early on Saturday, Oleksandr Sienkevych said on his Telegram channel. Russian forces targeted a local factory, also damaging nearby residential buildings, causing fires in three apartments and damaging an educational institution, he said.
Russian-installed officials in Luhansk have said missiles fired by Ukrainian forces injured six children and a Russian parliamentarian and damaged two disused factories in the eastern Ukrainian region’s main city, about 100km (60 miles) behind the frontlines.
A Russian SU-34 warplane crashed in the Bryansk region bordering Ukraine , Tass news agency reported, quoting emergency services, in the second such incident on Saturday after a helicopter was seemingly downed in the same region.
Two Russian pilots were killed when a Russian Mi-28 military helicopter crashed in the annexed peninsula of Crimea , Russian news agencies reported, citing the defence ministry. It said it believed the reason for Friday’s crash was equipment failure, Tass reported.
An unidentified object that entered Polish airspace from the direction of Belarus was probably an observation balloon, the defence ministry said on Saturday on Twitter. A spokesperson for Poland’s territorial defence force told Reuters a search for the object was under way. Russian and Belarusian authorities were not immediately available for comment.
Russia’s defence ministry said on Saturday two industrial sites in the occupied city of Luhansk have been struck with Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles supplied by Britain.
Zelenskiy has thanked the British prime minister, Rishi Sunak, for the provision of long-range cruise missiles. The UK defence secretary, Ben Wallace, earlier confirmed it would send the Storm Shadow missiles , prompting a threat from the Kremlin of a military response.
Police in the Russian city of St Petersburg have created an anti-drone unit to detect unmanned drones after a suspected attack on the Kremlin last week. The unit was launched on Tuesday during the annual second world war Victory Day celebrations on St Petersburg’s Palace Square, the city’s interior ministry said.
South Africa’s foreign ministry has summoned the US ambassador over allegations he made that the country had provided arms and ammunition to Russia for its war in Ukraine. Reuben Brigety said on Thursday that South Africa had loaded weapons and ammunition on to a Russian vessel, which is under sanctions, at the Simon’s Town naval base near Cape Town in December last year and that the arms were then transported to Russia.
Russia’s defence ministry has said Ukrainian forces carried out “offensive operations” along the entire line of contact near Soledar , the ministry’s official Zvezda news outlet reported. More than 1,000 troops and up to 40 tanks were used in Thursday’s assault, it said on Friday, adding that the attacks were “repulsed”.
The UN nuclear watchdog chief, Rafael Grossi, plans to present an agreement with Russia and Ukraine on protecting the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to the UN security council this month , indicating a deal is close, four diplomats have told Reuters. Grossi has been trying for months to secure an agreement to reduce the risk of a catastrophic accident from shelling at the Russian-occupied nuclear power station, Europe’s biggest.
Rishi Sunak expressed disappointment at a decision to block Zelenskiy’s request to speak via video at Saturday’s Eurovision grand final . The European Broadcasting Union, which produces the event, said the Ukrainian president had “laudable” intentions but rejected the request over fears it could politicise the event.
A 15-year-old girl was among two people killed and 10 people were injured in a Russian shelling attack, Ukraine’s defence ministry said.
The eastern city of Kostyantynivka was targeted by Smerch rocket launchers, it added.
russian terrorists once again shelled Kostyantynivka, Donetsk region, with "Smerch" rocket launchers. Ukrainian troops are advancing in two directions in the eastern city of Bakhmut but the situation in the city centre is more complicated, deputy defence minister Hanna Malyar said.
“The enemy is not able to take control of the city,” Malyar wrote on the Telegram messaging app.
Zelenskiy meets with Pope Francis at the Vatican
Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy , has met Pope Francis at the Vatican, who said in late April the Holy See is involved in a peace mission to end the war with Russia.
Earlier the president met his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella, and then prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, before he was due to head to the Vatican.
Both Mattarella and Meloni reiterated Italy’s full support for Ukraine in terms of military, financial, humanitarian and reconstruction aid in the short and long term.
At a news conference after her meeting with Zelenskiy, Meloni condemned Russia’s “brutal and unjust aggression,” pledged Italy’s support for Ukraine for “as long as is necessary,” and urged Russia to immediately withdraw.
“You can’t achieve peace through a surrender,” she said, echoing a previous comment by Mattarella. “It would be a very grave precedent for all nations of the world.”
She emphasised Italy’s support for Ukraine’s membership of the European Union and the “intensification” of a partnership with Nato.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy has arrived at the Vatican for a private audience with Pope Francis.
Zelenskiy to visit Germany
Volodymyr Zelenskiy will be received in Berlin on Sunday, German government sources told Reuters on Saturday, as the leader seeks to shore up support from key allies against Russia’s invasion.
Zelenskiy will arrive from Italy where he was meeting with Italian officials and Pope Francis on Saturday.
The Ukrainian leader last visited Germany for the Munich security council in February last year just before the war broke out.
Germany on Saturday announced €2.7 bn of military aid to Ukraine , its biggest such package yet since the Russian invasion, and pledged further support for Kyiv for as long as necessary.
The country has also taken in around a million Ukrainian refugees.
Christian Mölling, deputy director at the German council on foreign relations said Zelenskiy will probably want to know directly from Chancellor Olaf Scholz how he sees the war ending.
Mölling said:
Does Germany want a Ukrainian victory or is it enough for the war to end? It will be important for Zelenskiy to hear directly from the chancellor how he thinks … Ukraine needs financial assistance to pay its debt so it doesn’t go bankrupt and Germany plays a big role there.
He added: “And Ukraine is seeing that in Germany other topics are beginning to move into the foreground.”
Italy promises Ukraine full support
Prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has promised Italy’s full support to Ukraine in its efforts to repel Russia’s “brutal and unjust aggression.”
Speaking alongside Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Saturday, Meloni said Italy would continue to supply Ukraine with weapons and back his country for as long as is necessary.
Earlier in the day Zelenskiy met Italy’s head of state, Sergio Mattarella, in the president’s Quirinale palace and he will shortly head to the Vatican for talks with Pope Francis.
Here are the latest images from Ukraine and elsewhere:
It’s 4pm in Ukraine , here’s a look at the latest news.
Italy is fully supporting Ukraine in its resistance against Russia’s invasion, the Italian head of state said in welcoming Zelenskiy to his residence in Rome on Saturday.
“It is an honour to have you here in Rome,” Mattarella told Zelenskiy, in remarks aired on Italian television.
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has thanked the British prime minister, Rishi Sunak, for the provision of long-range cruise missiles. The UK defence secretary, Ben Wallace, earlier confirmed it would send the Storm Shadow missiles , prompting a threat from the Kremlin of a military response.
Rishi Sunak, the British prime minister, has expressed disappointment at a decision to block Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s request to speak via video at Saturday’s Eurovision grand final . The European Broadcasting Union, which produces the event, said the Ukrainian president had “laudable” intentions but rejected the request over fears it could politicise the event.
UK-supplied missiles used to attack occupied Luhansk, Russia claims
Russia’s defence ministry says two industrial sites in the occupied city of Luhansk have been struck with Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles supplied by Britain.
On Thursday, the UK became the first country to say it had started supplying Kyiv with long-range cruise missiles , which will allow it to hit Russian troops and supply dumps far behind the frontlines as Ukraine prepares a major counteroffensive.
On Saturday, Russia said:
Storm Shadow air-to-air missiles supplied to the Kyiv regime by Britain were used for the strike.
The British defence secretary, Ben Wallace, said the missiles could be used within Ukrainian territory, implying that he had received assurances from Kyiv that they would not be used to attack targets inside Russia’s internationally accepted borders.
The Russian ministry said the missiles had hit a plant producing polymers and a meat-processing factory.
