For all the attractions of Williamsburg , there is only one private golf and waterfront community. If that’s a surprise, wait until you learn that Two Rivers is no newcomer struggling for acceptance, but recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.
The member-only club has a unique composition—equal parts young families, working couples, and retirees—hailing from around the country and the world, giving the community a friendly vibrancy. They all enjoy a range of facilities and amenities that includes 10 lighted tennis courts, pools and a fitness center, two restaurants, and a wine shop.
At the heart of the action is a Tom Fazio-designed golf course, which has hosted many national and local events and ends with a three-hole stretch along the water. Its greens and bunkers were recently renovated and a new practice facility opened. The staff strives to get new and lapsed golfers, particularly women, into the game.
Also within the 1,500-acre property are 200 acres of nature preserve, a busy marina, 10 miles of hiking/biking trails, and more than four miles of shoreline along the James and Chickahominy rivers. Off-site but nearby are numerous cultural and historic offerings, from classes at the College of William and Mary to museums, theaters, and a growing food and beverage scene.
The Two Rivers community is nearly built out with 715 single-family houses and a strong resale market. Roughly 6% of homes are presently for sale, from $400,000 to $2 million.

About Town River
A Few Words
The Town River Yacht Club boasts three hundred fifty members, a two hundred plus boat marina, junior floats for over twenty five sailboats, and land facilities for the winter storage of all these boats-a far cry from our humble beginnings one hundred years ago. Under the leadership of Mr. Eugene R. Stone, a former mayor of Quincy, twenty local boat owners decided to form a boat club under the name Town River Yacht Club. Mr. Stone was elected our first Commodore with Jethro R. Mellen, Vice Commodore, Elijah P. Barrows, Secretary, and Arthur A. Richardson, Treasurer. They later applied for and received a charter for incorpo-ration as a yacht club. This charter presently hangs in the members’ room bear-ing the signatures of the original charter members.
It was decided in December of 1919 that the original clubhouse, which was located up river just beyond the gas tanks, was no longer adequate for its rapidly growing membership. In May of 1920, under the guidance of Peter Ander-son, the clubhouse was relocated down river to the property where we are today. Through the efforts of Peter’s brother Fred, Fore River Ship Yard loaned Town River Yacht Club a lighter (barge) to assist in the move. The relocation of the clubhouse was made possible only by the efforts of the members and their boats.
The land that was purchased was very muddy and marshy, yet there was one redeeming feature to this land purchase, a large band of sand and gravel at the back of the property. Under the direction of Commodore Bill Caldwell, the members toiled every day after their regular work hours and on weekends with shovels, wheelbarrows, planks and picks, digging into the gravel beds, carting down and spreading it to fill up holes and make the land usable. This work was completed between May and September enabling the club to hold an Open House on October 12, 1920, to which all local clubs were invited.
Due to the expenses incurred by the move, the club had hard sledding from 1920 to 1930, but under the guidance of Commodores Bill Caldwell and Francis E. McDonald, the club again prospered to the point where the member-ship was temporarily closed. Up Until the late 1930’s, the members had access to the floats through the use of two barges and a ramp. It was at this time the original pier was built and here again all the work was done by the members including driving the pil-ings.
The ever growing membership again made it necessary to expand. Hence, in 1947, $20,000 was placed in a Building Fund. After due consideration in August, 1948, member Roy McPherson was authorized to draw up the plans for and supervise the construction of a new building. The building was completed where it now stands in December, 1948 and by January 1, 1949, the moving operation was complete. Later, the old clubhouse was completely demolished and removed. In 1956 it became necessary to begin extensive repairs to the clubhouse because the northeast corner had, and was continuing to, settle. Piles were driven under the floor as well as extensive re-modeling. Under the guidance of John Robertson, Jr. another room was added to the clubhouse with out any cost for a contractor. This was completed in 1960 and is now known as the Commodore’s Locker. Here again, as in the past, all the work was done by the members at work parties, a policy that is prevalent at Town River Yacht Club, where the members are all for one and one for all.
In 1978 Town River Yacht Club continued to expand by purchasing the property adjacent to the west from the Shea family. In 1981 the club purchased land adjacent and to the west of recently purchased property from Mr. And Mrs. Herbert Duane. The addition of these properties enabled the club to expand the marina to the extent it is today as well as providing more room for parking and boat storage.
In addition to the club’s three hundred fifty senior membership, Town River Yacht Club has a Junior program of over one hundred members. The Jun-ior program began in 1938 but was temporarily delayed because of the war. In 1950, the program was revived with added impetus. In 1951, the club purchased twenty-six Turnabouts which composed the largest class racing sailboat fleet. A short time later, an instructor was hired, a former Junior, Donald MacArthur, to instruct the Juniors in sailing, racing, swimming, and other nautical instruction. During our Golden Anniversary in 1961, under Commodore Kenneth E. Yoerger, Sr., Town river hosted the National One Design Sailboat World Championship Series. In Addition to the Turnabout fleet, a Laser fleet was initiated in 1981. Over the years the Juniors have represented the club in may regattas all over the northeast coast. We are proud of their accomplishments.
In 1986, the year of our Diamond Anniversary, we installed a new electri-cal system, purchased a Brownell hauling system (the original system was a horse drawn Capstan), and made numerous other improvements. All done by the working membership.
In 2009, we installed Elizabeth (Betty) Knowles as Commodore. She is our first woman commodore.
In 2011, we celebrated our 100th anniversary! We had many functions to celebrate our centennial year. A DVD slide show was made with pictures from the past. Our historian, Ellen Yeorger, prepared a yearbook with pictures and a detailed history of the club gathered from the meeting minutes, local library, and city hall.
Town River Yacht Club is made up of men, women, and families who together, work for the good of the club and each other.
The TRYC Juniors
future Generations of members
The Town River Yacht Club Junior Member Program has a strong presence at Town River. With over 150 junior members on the roster, the Juniors of today are the Commodores of tomorrow. Growing up a Junior at Town River teaches the next generation of senior members why it is important for the future of the club to be involved. Our Junior Members ARE our future.

Software engineer goes missing from Detroit Yacht Club where he's been a member for years
DETROIT (WXYZ) — Divers with Michigan State Police searched the waters near the Detroit Yacht Club Tuesday for any sign of 63-year-old James (Jim) Kuntz who was reported missing Sunday but last seen with friends Friday evening at the club.
Kuntz, a software engineer, is an avid kayaker, and, at first, the Coast Guard reported that he was missing along with his red kayak. But Plymouth Township Police spotted that red kayak in Kuntz's home when a close family friend, Tamra Homicz, contacted them to do a welfare check.
"My husband is like his brother," said Homicz. "They're that close."
The Detroit Yacht Club is on its own island next to Belle Isle and jurisdiction falls under the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
DNR conservation officers are handling the investigation and trying to determine if Kuntz fell into the water.
Homicz said that although Kuntz is an avid kayaker, he would never jump into the water to swim. And she said Kuntz would never go far from his Apple watch that he used to help monitor his heart.
The watch and Kuntz's wallet were reportedly found on his boat. His vehicle was found in the parking lot of the yacht club.
Investigators said they are working with Michigan State Police to try to ping Kuntz's phone.
Homicz said everyone thinks the world of Kuntz because he's so kind and always so helpful. And they just want to find him.
"He deserves this," she said. "It's just one of those things. It's a mystery that we hope can be solved."
If anyone sees any sign of Kuntz near the water, they should call 911. Anyone with any other information that might assist investigators is urged to call DNR dispatch at 1-800-292-7800.

At about 3:10 p.m. Friday, May 10, Marlborough police responded to a caller reporting a deceased male floating in the river near the Marlboro Yacht Club on Dock Road, Marlborough Police Chief Gerald Cocozza said in an email.
The body was recovered with assistance from the Marlboro and New Hamburg fire departments and was turned over to the Ulster County Medical Examiner’s office for further investigation. State police at Rhinebeck also assisted, Cocozza said.
State police Trooper A.J. Hicks said in an email that, “remains were found, but the (medical examiner) has not completed (his) report so we do not have a 100% ID as of yet.”
All agencies cleared the scene at 5:17 p.m.
The Marlboro Yacht Club spokesperson, who asked not to be identified, said the person is thought to have jumped from a nearby bridge about two weeks ago. The spokesperson declined to provide additional information but said the club sends its condolences to family members.
The following is a list of suicide prevention services.

Music | sf giants’ jung hoo lee to undergo season-ending surgery, music | this bay area band was ‘yacht rock’ way before ‘yacht rock’ was a thing, pablo cruise brings its soft-rock hits to guild theatre.
For Bay Area band Pablo Cruise , however, the connection to the genre has been longer — and more literal — than for most.
“Our headquarters was an 82-foot schooner in the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon,” says Cory Lerios, who co-founded Pablo Cruise in 1973. “So, we were definitely yacht rockers back before yacht rock was a term.”
From that base, the band has delivered some defining gems in what is now known as the yacht rock genre, which celebrates the smooth a.m. radio staples of the ‘70s and early ‘80s delivered by such artists as Toto, Nicolette Larson, Poco and the Little River Band.
Most notably, Pablo Cruise was responsible for the meticulously produced soft-rock numbers “Whatcha Gonna Do?” and “Love Will Find a Way,” both of which were Top 10 hits and rank as first-tier yacht rock staples.
Those songs — which sound as good today as they did when they first came out in the late ‘70s — are two of the biggest reasons why fans will turn out to see Pablo Cruise when it performs May 9 at the Guild Theatre in Menlo Park. Showtime is 8 p.m. and tickets are $49, guildtheatre.com . The group also plays May 8 at the Felton Music Hall and May 10 at the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma, pablocruise.com .
The Menlo Park show will be a homecoming for Lerios, who now lives in Thousands Oaks but was born in San Francisco and grew up in nearby Palo Alto. It was on the Peninsula where he began playing piano and joined his first bands in junior high school.
“I never really thought I would make a career of it,” Lerios says of playing music. “But one thing led to another and I kind of never looked back.”
He’d find his first taste of real success as a member of Stoneground, a Concord-based rock act that released a number of albums on the Warner Bros. records label in the 1970s. After a few years, however, Lerios and two other Stoneground members — vocalist-guitarist David Jenkins and drummer Steve Price — would leave the fold and go on to form Pablo Cruise with the help of bassist Bud Cockrell (previously of the Bay Area act It’s a Beautiful Day).
One thing to note from that list of original band members is that none of them are, in fact, named Pablo Cruise. Neither are any other of the current or former members, for that matter. So, it’s probably a good time to pause and clear up the origin of the moniker, which Lerios says has certainly drawn plenty of questions over the years.
“The truth is that it was a nickname of a buddy of mine from Colombia, South America,” he says. “It was just a nickname I gave him — Pablo Cruise. He was a very bright guy, very charismatic. And I just called him Pablo Cruise.”
So, when it came time to name this new post-Stoneground outfit, Lerios remembered his ol’ pal’s nickname and thought it fit in with one of the trends of the era.
“It was kind of at that point where you had Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull — a lot of two names for these bands — and Pablo Cruise just had a great ring to it,” Lerios reckons.
Whatever they called themselves, these four musicians were bound to get discovered at some point — given that they were all great players and wrote memorable tunes. So, not surprisingly, it wasn’t all that long before A&M came knocking and Pablo Cruise was thrilled to sign with such a well-regarded record label.
“A&M was notable for sticking with a band,” Lerios says. “Today, labels barely sign bands. But they don’t support bands like they did a lot of back in the day. They supported tours. They supported the making of the record, the travel — all kinds of things that they don’t do anymore.”
The result was the band’s 1975 eponymous debut, which eeked its way into the Billboard 200 and began setting the foundation for the success that would later come. It didn’t produce any hit singles, but it did give listeners a wonderful 12½-minute instrumental number called “Ocean Breeze” that drew plenty of spins at album oriented radio (AOR) stations.
“If you want to check out some deep Pablo Cruise, you should listen to that — because it’s a phenomenal piece of music,” Lerios says. “And that (song) really got us going. Still, everywhere we play now, people ask to hear ‘Ocean Breeze,’ which is always nice to know that people have gone that deep into the repertoire.”
A second album, titled “Lifeline,” followed in 1976 and managed to hoist the band a bit further up the charts, but Pablo Cruise still lacked that hit to really take it to the next level.
All of that would change with the third album, 1977’s “A Place in the Sun,” although not overnight. In fact, the first single released from that album was “Atlanta June” and it didn’t live up to expectations. Oh, but the B-side was a catchy little number called “Whatcha Gonna Do?”
“(Radio stations) played ‘Atlanta June’ and it got some acclaim, but it didn’t really take off the way they’d hoped,” Lerios remembers. “So, somebody flipped it over and put on ‘Whatcha Gonna Do?’ and, all of sudden, it started to blow up.”
The song slowly climbed the charts, eventually breaking into the top 10. The group then scored a second hit with the album’s terrific title track.
“When it gets to that point, everything changes,” Lerios says. “The phones really start to ring. You are getting offers to be on TV shows. All of a sudden, it’s like you’ve arrived.”
The band quickly followed up that album with another winner, 1978’s “Worlds Away,” which produced three hits – including the slam-dunk single “Love Will Find a Way.”
Both albums, “A Place in the Sun” and “Worlds Away,” would be certified platinum.
That would be the zenith of the band’s career, although it did produce two more albums — 1979’s “Part of the Game” and 1981’s “Reflector” — which still did quite well on the charts. The same could not be said of the band’s last studio record, 1983’s “Out of Our Hands,” which failed to chart as listeners had moved on from Pablo Cruise-style soft rock to other styles of music.
“There was a certain instrumentation, a certain form of writing that was predominant back then,” Lerios says of the a.m. hits of the era. “Then, all of a sudden, like the Knack, Johnny Rotten and all these bands came in and punk rock kind of took over and just squashed soft rock.”
By the mid ‘80s, the band members parted ways.
“Success can change things and as we just evolved in our lives, Dave (Jenkins) and I weren’t hitting it anymore,” Lerios says. “We really weren’t writing a lot. And what we were writing, we didn’t really like – and nobody else seemed to like it either.
“I had other aspirations and I know Dave did. So, we split. We didn’t necessarily break up the band. We just went different directions.”
Lerios managed a really cool second act in Hollywood, scoring films and TV shows. In that realm, his credits include the 1993 Wesley Snipes action flick “Boiling Point,” the awesome 1991 horror epic “Child’s Play 3” and, most famously, “Baywatch.”
Jenkins also experienced a good deal of post-Pablo success, including spending a few years in the country group Southern Pacific and recording with Hawaiian vocalist Kapono Beamer.
About 20 years ago, Lerios and Jenkins decided to give Pablo Cruise another shot and they’ve been peddling the soft rock to eager crowds ever since. Yet, it’s not just the old-school fans who are showing up. Pablo Cruise — which now consists of Lerios, Jenkins, bassist Larry Antonino, drummer Sergio Gonzalez and vocalist Robbie Wyckoff — is also seeing a healthy contingent of younger listeners.
“One of my jokes is that ‘you are too young to be here,’” Lerios says. “Kids come up and say, ‘My parents played this music in the house all the time. I love it. Big fan.’
“You know, music — even though we try to compartmentalize it and try to give it a decade or a whatever – good music is good music.”
