Charter a Sail on Mental Heeling

There’s no better way to experience Charleston than to view it from the Harbor.

Established in 2015, Charleston Sailboat Charters was created by Captain Jay Keeney with one goal in mind… to introduce sailing to anyone with the desire to learn and get out on the water. Whether you’re local or visiting, let’s go sailing!

As we navigate the Charleston Harbor together, tacking and gybing along the way, we’ll view various landmarks including: the Historic District South of Broad, Fort Sumter, the Battery and French Quarter, the USS Yorktown, Waterfront Park, Castle Pinckney and the iconic Ravenel Bridge.

We loved our boat ride, we saw dolphins and a gorgeous sunset. Highly recommend this as a great on-the-water experience for anyone visiting the Charleston- thanks again! We'll be back :)

What a fun way to see Charleston!! The Captain was a cool guy and knew a good bit about the area. Drinks and an amazing sunset on a cool boat! What more could you want? Would definitely recommend anyone and everyone do this when visiting Charleston.

Captain Bob gave us the ride of our weekend - could not have been more friendly, knowledgable, and accommodating. We've done a several similar rides but this was by far the best experience. HIGHLY recommend to both tourists and locals wanting a fun day at sea.

I took my kids out on Captain Jay’s boat who showed us around in the harbor. We saw dolphins, and the kids got to steer the boat too. I highly recommend this tour with Captain Jay or Captain Bob!

AMAZING EXPERIENCE !!! I loved every second of the sailing adventure from start to finish. Had so much fun bonding with friends on the boat while the very professional crew sailed us around and made sure we had a fun and relaxing time. Jen and Janet did a great job at making sure we got to see all the beauty of Charleston and helped us watch one of the best sunsets I’ve seen.

To say that our experience was perfect is an understatement! Front the awesome views to the dolphins swimming right beside us, it was a trip I will definitely be taking again! Captains Jen and Janet were amazing...professional and laid back, they made us all feel at home and totally relaxed. A must-do in Charleston!

History, dolphins, the harbor of Charleston.... and a little wine. We really couldn’t have had a more perfect trip! The ladies Captaining the Shenanigan were very knowledgeable and made us feel safe the whole time. We plan on going again soon!

So much fun! It was amazing! Can’t wait to go again! We saw dolphins and the most amazing views! They like to knew everything about the harbor!

About Charleston

Established in 1670, Charleston is packed with over 350 years of history. Some of this history, such as Fort Sumter, can only be accessed via Charleston's waterways. The city has a subtropical climate, ensuring warm weather almost year-round. The sunny summers and mild winters are perfect for boating, no matter the season. A plethora of wildlife calls our coasts home. It is not uncommon to have dolphins escort our charters throughout Charleston's waters.

About our master captains

Steve Woodard  has been around boats all of his life, owning his first sail boat at the tender age of 11. In 2008, he founded  Charleston Charter and Yacht, a family business. He proudly brought luxurious, customized, private charters to the Lowcountry for the first time. Steve has owned 13 boats throughout the years and has been a Master Captain 100 tons for 16 years. His skill, expertise, and experience in maneuvering a variety of vessels ensures you are in extremely capable and caring hands.

Paul Zobel was born in Charleston, spending much of his formative years on the waters around the area. He has had a captains license for over forty years, owning and piloting boats from Miami to NY for many of them. He was Captain of the Port for Dewees Island for ten years, piloting their ferry boats. Capt. Charleston Charter and Yacht is incredibly proud to have Cpt. Paul continuing work on the water with us.

Pete DeBoer is a native of Seattle, Washington and grew up in a boating family. Because he is a retired U.S. Coast Guard officer, his experience in operating boats and ships covers the spectrum from 14 to 378 feet. He has served and worked in the Pacific, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Bering Sea, and the Atlantic - from Trinidad to Martha’s Vineyard. Multitalented, Pete is a singer-songwriter that enjoys playing the guitar. His novel, Heave To , loosely parallels his 3 years of drug enforcement operations on a Charleston based cutter in the early 80’s. When Pete is your captain, it's guaranteed you will probably enjoy a sea story or two.

2012 Beneteau USA Oceanis 41 With the Beneteau Oceanis 41, the heart of the Oceanis range has a yacht of incomparable volume and a design with elegant lines. Her new generation hull promises comfortable, fast sailing. The mainsail arch enables you to sail in complete safety and at the same time gives you more space in the cockpit. The continuous chine over the full length of the boat creates excellent hull rigidity. With limited heel, the yacht’s sea keeping is improved without you losing speed.  The expansive cockpit, with twin steering stations and a clever, innovative convertible transom that folds open to become a handy swim ladder and boarding platform (while greatly increasing the “floor plan” and living space at anchor), is a place to which sailors will naturally gravitate. Under sail, the Oceanis 41 is a solid performer, registering upwind speeds in the mid-6s on a mild afternoon with the breeze in the low teens and knocking off a solid 8 knots when cracked off on a broad reach with a fully unfurled main and slightly overlapped jib set on a generous double-spreader, fractional, high-aspect rig. In puffier air, the furling main and jib were quickly and efficiently shortened to balance the sail plan, the boat is a pleasure to drive. This South Carolina Beach Town Is a Local Favorite — and It's Just Outside Charleston

Here’s what you need to know to plan a trip to Folly Beach, South Carolina.

sailboats charleston sc

Where to Stay

Best things to do, best restaurants, best shopping, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

MargaretW/Getty Images

When I moved to Charleston several years ago, finding a favorite beach was a top priority, especially as the summer heat began to set in. While I had grown up vacationing on nearby Kiawah Island, I knew I’d need a closer coastal escape, one with a decidedly younger, more laid-back atmosphere. This desire sparked my first trip out to Folly Beach — one of Charleston’s main beaches — with a lounge chair, sunscreen, and a couple of page-turning books in hand. Over the next couple of years, Folly became my go-to spot when friends were visiting from out of town. It’s a destination with everything you need for an amazing beach weekend, including shopping, seafood restaurants, relaxed bars, and the wide, sandy coastline South Carolina is famous for.

Folly Beach is technically a city on Folly Island, although its personality and attributes are more akin to your classic Southern beach town. “Folly is a funky, hippie, surfy, small barrier island that has a warm vibe and beautiful views,” Jenny Brown, founder and owner of Shaka Surf School , tells Travel + Leisure . It may be home to a variety of tourist attractions and shops, but there’s always a steady beat of originality that calls to both travelers and locals alike. “Folly Beach has traditionally been a local gem, welcoming people from all walks of life to experience the true essence of South Carolina and the genuine spirit of Charleston,” says Stephanie Dasher, the executive director of Warrior Surf Foundation . “This authenticity gives Folly Beach its eclectic charm, setting it apart as a beach with character and a story to tell.”

Meet the Expert

Jenny Brown is the founder and owner of Shaka Surf School in Folly Beach.

Stephanie Dasher is the executive director of Warrior Surf Foundation , a nonprofit that provides surf therapy to veterans.

Ashby Gale is the owner and lead paleontologist of Charleston Fossil Adventures .

Read on to discover where to stay, what to do, and when to visit Folly Beach, according to local experts.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Skip the hotels and rent a cozy bungalow just steps from the beach.
  • Take a surf lesson with one of Folly Beach’s locally-owned, top-rated surf schools.
  • Grab a table at Chico Feo after a day spent out in the sun.
  • Stop by Bert’s Market for sandwiches, drinks, or any essentials you forgot to grab on your way in.
  • Visit in the off-season, from October to March, to avoid larger crowds and heavy traffic.

Instead of a hotel, Brown recommends finding “a cute B&B or renting a tiny, original 1950s house.” There are several of these charming homes on Folly — and we rounded up a few of the best ones below.

Rustic 1940s Beach Bungalow

With room for up to five guests, this charming home is located within walking distance of the beach as well as most of the restaurants and bars on Folly. It’s outfitted with all of the modern amenities — including a washer and dryer — and the front deck comes with Adirondack chairs and twinkling bistro lights, making it the perfect place to lounge the night away.

Blackbeard's Folly

Blackbeard’s Folly is a recently renovated beach home composed of three separate apartments, but they can all be booked for an entire group if desired (sleeping 24 guests in total). While each apartment has a different layout, they share a picture-perfect patio and beachy bar. The best part? The patio features three outdoor showers, where you can wash any sand off before coming inside.

A converted dental office — hence the name — The Smile is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage located just half a block from Center Street. There’s plenty of room to spread out, with a kitchen, living area, and large front porch at your disposal. One recent traveler described it as “clean, close to everything, and filled with character.”

Spend a day on the beach.

In the words of Brown, “Slow down and relax… you’re on Folly.” This is especially pertinent advice for a beach day. Folly Beach boasts six miles of wide beaches, and this map highlights beach access points (as well as ones that are ADA accessible), places to park, and public restrooms. If you require beach chairs or umbrellas during your visit, you can either buy them from a local shop or rent them from Folly Beach Chair Company . No matter your game plan for the day, be sure to brush up on what you’re allowed — and not allowed (glass containers, plastic bags) — to bring on the beach.

Take a surf lesson.

For Dasher, taking a surf lesson is a “must-try activity” for anyone “seeking memorable experiences on Folly Beach.” She recommends Isla Surf School , but you can also check out Carolina Salt Surf Lessons or Shaka Surf School to learn (or improve) your surfing technique and etiquette.

Get a good look at Morris Island Lighthouse.

The tallest lighthouse in South Carolina may only be accessible by boat, but you can get a good view of it from Folly Beach. As a way to get your steps in and explore more of the island, Ashby Gale, owner and lead paleontologist of Charleston Fossil Adventures , suggests walking to “the ‘east end’ of the island to watch the sun (or moon) rise next to the Morris Island Lighthouse .” To get even closer, you can embark on the Morris Island Lighthouse Tour , which provides guests with a better understanding of coastal wildlife, ecology, and the history of the lighthouse.

Hunt for shark teeth and fossils.

Folly Beach is one of the best places around Charleston to look for shark teeth, an activity that can be fun for the whole family. It’s also one that requires patience and a sharp eye, so it’s often better to go with a guide. “If you don't find shark teeth when you visit, please consider booking an adventure with one of Charleston Fossil Adventures' paleontologists to guarantee you go home with pockets full of fossils,” says Gale. “We have adventures that leave by boat directly from Folly and other boat locations within a 30-minute drive.”

Jack of Cups Saloon

Charleston’s impressive culinary scene extends out to Folly Beach, where you’ll find the Jack of Cups Saloon . “Jack of Cups has so many options and [a] changing menu,” says Brown, who also notes there’s a “fun porch out back.” While the menu itself is evolving, the restaurant describes its offerings as “unexpected dishes, often inspired by Asian and Indian flavors.”

Following a long day in the sun, there’s nowhere better than Chico Feo to grab a cold drink and some tacos. Gale gives it points for its “small, intimate setting, simple yet tasty menu, and off-the-beaten-path [location].” The casual outdoor picnic tables are also ideal for gathering with a group of friends to listen to live music, poetry readings, or even comedy routines, which are often part of the Chico Feo Soapbox Nights held every Monday.

Alfredo's On Folly

While Italian food might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you envision a meal at the beach, Alfredo’s On Folly may prove you wrong. “Alfredo's On Folly [has] homemade pasta, epic sauces, and a great hometown vibe,” says Brown. After a full day of swimming, biking, or surfing, you’ll be more than ready for a chicken parm panini or spaghetti topped with beef ragu.

Courtesy of Alfredo's on Folly

Lost Dog Cafe

For a pre-beach-day breakfast, Gale recommends Lost Dog Cafe . With a menu that consists of hearty favorites like biscuits and sausage gravy, breakfast burritos, French toast, pancakes, and huevos rancheros, the restaurant basically guarantees you won’t leave hungry. As a bonus,  you’re more than welcome to bring your dog along for the experience.

Bert’s Market

Browsing Bert’s Market , a destination Dasher describes as a “community convenience store that never sleeps,” is a Folly Beach experience every visitor needs to have at least once. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, Bert’s is technically the only grocery store on the island, but it’s a lot more than that. Along with your typical groceries, you’ll also find household goods, wine, fishing supplies, a hot food bar, and a full-service deli. “Bert's is renowned for its friendly service and the opportunity to savor a signature Turkey Crunch wrap — don't forget the turkey bacon,” says Dasher.

Beach and Souvenir Shops

Center Street, the area’s main hub, is lined with a variety of kitschy shops you can pop into for beach towels, tank tops, and all manner of Folly Beach memorabilia. As you stroll down the street, keep an eye out for Mr. John's Beach Store , Beachwear & Gifts , Islander , and Palms . You can also turn onto East Avenue, where you’ll find Folly Sol , a local artisan boutique and gallery.

Folly Beach is a true surf town — and there are a couple of stores to frequent if you’re looking to improve your skills on a board. McKevlin's Surf Shop and Ocean Surf Shop are both located on Center Street, and each offers bodyboard and surfboard rentals — the latter has paddle boards, too — as well as expert advice on wave conditions and what you need to know before getting out in the Folly surf.

Raquel Lonas/Getty Images

Summer is, unsurprisingly, one of the most popular times to visit Folly Beach — as it’s the best time of the year for swimming in the ocean. The off-season months, however, contain their own brand of magic. “Spring and fall are great… with smaller crowds,” says Brown. And, according to Gale, if you visit from October through March, you may have a better chance of finding a unique souvenir to take home with you. “Nor'easters and high winds often pull more sand off our beaches, uncovering more fossil material than we see during the summer months,” he explains.

Charleston International Airport (CHS) is about 20 miles from Folly Beach, but the exact time it takes to arrive on the island heavily depends on traffic. “There is only one road on and off the island,” says Gale, referring to Folly Road, the major thoroughfare you’ll take through James Island, which turns into Folly Beach Road and eventually into Center Street. “Plan your arrival carefully, as holidays and weekends frequently see traffic gridlocked 3 miles from the beach.”

While you can drive to and around Folly Beach, parking can sometimes be difficult, particularly on the weekends. If you’re staying overnight, Dasher recommends biking and walking. “These unhurried methods allow visitors to be fully present, savoring the moment and absorbing the vibrant atmosphere while reducing the likelihood of missing noteworthy details and encounters,” she says. Visitors can also opt to rent a golf cart from Folly Beach Golf Carts ; just make sure to understand the rules and regulations before driving one around the island.

Have a derelict boat you want to get rid of? SC might take it. Here are the details

Hundreds of abandoned and derelict boats litter South Carolina’s pretty shorelines and fish-filled waterways across eight coastal counties. But the state’s chief environmental agency aims to put a dent in the chronic problem with a first-of-its kind program for the state..

Through the Vessel Turn-in Program, unveiled earlier this month, residents and businesses in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Horry and Jasper counties can simply apply to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control to have unwanted, at-risk or end-of-life vessels disposed of before they become abandoned.

“This is a first of its kind program in South Carolina,” said Liz Hartje, a project manager in DHEC’s Ocean and Coastal Resource Management.

Historically, DHEC has assisted local governments and others in acquiring funding, typically through NOAA, to remove boats that already have been abandoned. It is a costly process, Hartje said.

Preventing boats from being left behind in the first place is a new tactic in addressing the chronic environmental and navigation problem for the state’s coastal counties. The proactive service, which is free for those who qualify, is way to get out in front of the problem,” Hartje said. “It’s a little bit of a different way to tackle the issue and something we’re pretty excited about.”

DHEC officials studied what other states are doing across the country including Florida and Texas to develop the South Carolina pilot program.

Boat owners are required to fill out an application to be covered by the new program. If the state accepts the submission, owners can bring the vessel to a laydown yard 40 miles north of Charleston. If they can’t transport it, a contractor may be able to transport it for them. At the laydown yard, the vessel will be broken down and as much of it as possible will be recycled. The rest will be sent to a landfill. Fiberglass hulls will be broken down and mixed with other materials made into a fuel source at a local cement kiln.

“It’s going to be a case by case basis,” says Julia Chrisco, a Coast Resource project manager. “If people apply, I can look at every single detail about their vessel and come to a better conclusion.”

She expects to see a lot of sailboats and motorboats.

The project is currently being tested and Chrisco and Hartje hope it is popular so it can be implemented on a long-term basis.

“I think sometimes people aren’t sure how to take care of a vessel,” Hartje. This “makes it easier for them.”

While the state does not keep specific numbers, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says thousands of abandoned and derelict vessels litter ports, waterways and estuaries up and down the cost. These aging watercraft pollute marshes and coastal waters, Chrisco says, because once they get into the waterways or the salt marsh or oyster reef habitat, gas and oil can leak. They also create navigation hazards for working boats.

Some organizations pull abandoned vessels out of the water but the cost can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars to remove and transport them to a landfill.

It would not be unusual to spend more than $10,000 on a sunken vessel that needs to be floated up and placed on a barge, Hartje said.

The pilot project is being funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It is part of the state’s five-year marine debris strategy.

Those interested in the pilot project should apply online at scdhec.gov/ADV .

The first vessel drop-off day will take place in the Charleston County area in June. Interested applicants from any of the state’s eight coastal counties are encouraged to apply online by April 5, to be considered.

Some coastal South Carolina communities in Beaufort County are taking steps to address abandoned boats as well.

In 2022, the Port Royal Town Council unanimously approved an ordinance that requires a permit for mooring and bans anchoring within a certain distance of public boat landings, bridges, private docks and marinas. The Town of Hilton Head is considering an ordinance as well to address the problem.

These new museums (and more) are changing the way Black history is told across America

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ‒ From a wooden bench at the edge of the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park, visitors can see the Alabama River where enslaved Africans were transported and sold into a life of forced labor.

From the wide windows on the second floor of the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina, visitors can look across the Cooper River toward Africa , where people from the continent were kidnapped to be auctioned off.

The sculpture park opens this month. The international museum opened last summe r. Both were built on sites considered sacred and important to telling the history of African Americans, to telling the history of America.

“We have to build these places where we can tell the story, save the story, steward the story,’’ said Tonya Matthews, president and CEO of the International African American Museum . “But one of the challenges has been the curation of the story. Who is picking the stories? Who is telling the stories? What stories do we believe should have grand institutions? Arguably, the African American story has not been in the category that was thought to need a grand institution.’’

The museum and monument park are among a growing number of sites across the country opening in the past decade to preserve and celebrate Black History and the Black experience in America. Some are multimillion-dollar museums , while others are housed in small interpretive centers.

In Mississippi, there is the Civil Rights Museum in Jackson and the B.B. King Museum in the Blues legend's native Indianola. In Alabama, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice tells the story of the nation’s troubling history of lynching, and in Washington, D.C., the National Museum of African American History and Culture , showcases the journey of Black people across the United States.

Black museums have long been “cultural anchors’’ in their communities, but it has been only in recent years that more have raised enough money and garnered enough support to open, museum leaders said. The institutions matter even more today as lawmakers in some states push to restrict the teaching of Black history and ban some books that tell this history, experts said.

“History matters in profoundly important ways,’’ said Lonnie Bunch, founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture and now secretary of the Smithsonian. “And it's partly museums' job to articulate that and to provide an opportunity to use history to define reality and give hope.”

New sculpture park tells history of slavery in the US

On a recent afternoon, the Alabama River rose so high the boat that would have ferried visitors from downtown Montgomery to the new Freedom Memorial Sculpture Park wasn’t in service. The voyage is intended to introduce visitors to the site along the waterway enslaved people traveled.

The park, which opens March 27, sits on a 17-acre site between the river and the railroad tracks enslaved people were forced to lay.

Nearly all the works in the park were created by African American, African and Indigenous artists. Some are part of the permanent collection; others are on loan. Each tells a story.

Acknowledging Indigenous people who lived on the land long before Europeans arrived, there are sculptures honoring their culture, their presence, their resilience. A bronze sculpture created by Allan Houser pictures a man hunting buffalo. Steps away stands Cliff Fragua's “Three Sisters,’’ made of Utah alabaster.

Further along the path, a map tracing the Transatlantic Slave Trade shows nearly 3 million people were trafficked from Luanda, Angola, from 1501 to 1867.

Wooden pillars report dates and counties where enslaved people were brought. From 1619 to 1774, 3,996 were taken to Hampton, Virginia .

Visitors walk along a trail made with resin to make it feel more like earth. They can read ''slave laws'' that banned enslaved people from traveling off plantations without written permission. Punishments included floggings, sometimes death.

The narrative of William Wells Brown tells the story of his escape from slavery. (He went on to lecture against slavery and write what is considered the first novel by an African American.)

There is “Last Seen,’’ panels featuring ads posted by people searching for wives, mothers, husbands. Many spent their last nickels and dimes looking for loved ones, said Bryan Stevenson, who created the park and founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a human rights organization pushing to end mass incarceration.

“That just reinforces how much for enslaved people the most important thing about slavery was the ability to love someone , to find your children, your siblings, your parents,’’ Stevenson told USA TODAY in an interview ahead of the park's opening. “That was powerful.”

Near the end of the path, visitors look toward the sky at the National Monument to Freedom, a 43-foot-high, 155-foot-wide steel structure that bears 122,000 ''unique'' surnames adopted by Black people in the 1870 Census. It was the first count where enslaved Black people were listed by name.

Plans for the wall went from 20 feet high to 30 feet to 43 feet. ‘‘The history of our people deserves to be on something big,’’ Stevenson said.

Part of the inscription Stevenson wrote for the wall reads: “The country you built must honor you. We acknowledge the tragedy of your enslavement. We commit to advancing freedom in your name.’’

Black museums are about storytelling

Museums bring in lifelong learners, while artifacts help humanize history, Bunch said . They teach visitors about slavery , for instance , through the tale of a family or a plantation.

“They're all about storytelling, making you care about the people whose histories you explore,’’ Bunch said.

Since the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture opened in 2016, people have been more interested in visiting their local museums and creating new ones, said Vedet Coleman-Robinson, executive director of the Association of African American Museums.

The museum had 1.6 million visitors last year.

Today, there are about 300 African American - focused museums, including virtual ones. More are scheduled to open soon, including the National Urban League’s Civil Rights Museum in Harlem, the Go-Go Museum in Washington, D.C, The Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx, and the National Juneteenth Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.

“Now is the time for people to really get familiar with our museums and our history,’’ Coleman-Robinson said. “We’re past due.”

The early Black museums opened decades ago because the history of African Americans wasn’t included in mainstream institutions, Coleman-Robinson said. “Our museums have really been voices for their communities.’’

Charleston highlights local Black history

It’s not lost on visitors to the International African American Museum at what was once the busiest slave port in Northeast America, where hundreds of thousands of Africans were brought to Gadsden’s Wharf to be sold into generations of slavery.

The idea for the museum began about 20 years ago, and plans changed and expanded over the decades.

“It became clear that Charleston didn't just need to tell its own story ‒ that we were the linchpin in the much larger story of that beginning period of slavery in America,’’ Matthews said.

More than 100,000 people have visited since the museum opened last summer.

In addition to its focus on slavery, museum visitors explore the history of Africa and the African diaspora. They also learn about the region's rich arts and culture.

“The circle got even wider, and folks decided that … this period of slavery is neither the beginning nor the end of the African American journey,’’ Matthews said.

On one recent afternoon, Suzanne Johnson sat on a bench inside the Praise House exhibit at the museum. She hummed along as she watched a video of people singing and celebrating the rich Gullah Geechee culture. She watched it again, then again.

The stop at the museum last month was a must for Johnson and her daughter, Cameron Mine, who were visiting from Miami. They spent hours in the museum seeing exhibits like the slave tags Black people had to wear. There was #758 porter, #672 servant. There was a black wall listing names forced on enslaved Africans and another with names they came with like Cando, Tooguah and Sannar.

The Praise House particularly stirred emotions for Johnson , whose grandmother has roots in South Carolina.

“If they take our stories from us, we cease to exist,” said Johnson, 51. “The beauty of this museum is it weaves our stories together.’’

Johnson believes museums are necessary especially now to counter restrictions like in her home state of Florida, where the College Board's Advanced Placement African American Studies course was banned . “They’re trying to stifle our story,’’ she said.

Johnson was excited to see that next to the Praise House, construction for new exhibits had begun. “I intend to grow with the museum,’’ she said.

'Igniting a cultural renaissance'

Museums help expand public education about African American history, said Brent Leggs, executive director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund and senior vice president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation , the nonprofit that established the fund.

“We're at a moment of igniting both cultural reckoning around the gaps in the American story and the need to more equitably interpret American history,’’ Leggs said. “We’re also igniting a cultural renaissance.”

Matthews, of the International African American Museum, said there is finally a recognition that the African American story doesn’t just fit in an art gallery and that it should be included in every museum focused on American history.

“There is also room to have entire spaces dedicated to the story so we can get into the nuances, so we can talk about it from different perspectives,’’ Matthews said.

Heaven Campbell and Karissa Pelichet stopped at the painting of a family in the international museum, discussing the pain of learning the father had been lynched.

The sophomores from North Carolina A&T State University were recently in Charleston to visit the museum and learn more about the city’s Black history. They had also booked a Black Heritage walking tour for that afternoon.

“We love Black History and how it shows how far we’ve come,’’ said Pelichet, 20.

The roommates had visited other museums in the past, including The King Center in Atlanta and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. “It ties everything together,” Pelichet said of the visits.

Campbell, who has taken several African American study classes, said it’s on people to explore their heritage.

“We can’t depend on the public school system to teach our history,’’ said Campbell, 20, adding that visiting museums is only part of learning about Black history. “It should be a stepping stone, but not our only stepping stone.”

Black history restrictions spur more interest

The push to teach more Black history comes as dozens of states, including Florida, Texas and Oklahoma, have adopted or proposed measures that critics say omit crucial parts of Black history . Some have also banned books, many of them by Black authors that focus on race.

The restrictions have spurred more people to educate themselves , museum leaders said.

‘’The more we try to clamp down on some things, frankly, the more people are talking about it and then they start to seek out places to find this story,’’ Matthews said. “Many will look for specifically authentic places.’’

That’s often a Black museum, experts said.

“The broader public understands that museums and historic sites are supplemental places of knowledge and education and are critically important at this moment in our history,’’ Leggs said.

Bunch said there will always be interest in Black museums regardless of political pushback.

“You want to make sure that those museums are strong so when the pendulum swings and more and more people are coming to the subject, they have good museums to explore.’’

The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park is the latest of three EJI history projects in Montgomery. More than 2 million people have visited the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum since they opened in 2018.

Stevenson called the response ‘’affirming’’ and ‘’encouraging.’’

“That has helped me believe that what we're doing can have an impact and has power, and we should keep trying to do it,’’ he said.

The reaction to their first two sites led the EJI to create the sculpture park with its focus on slavery. “I really hope that we begin to understand that the institution of slavery created harms that have a legacy and that we need to understand those harms,’’ Stevenson said.

'An investment well worth making'

Not all new Black museums are mega structures. Some focus on one person or moment in history. Some don’t have a building at all. The Sankofa Mobile Museum recently visited schools in Prince George’s County, Maryland, teaching local Black history.

An old storefront in Sumner, Mississippi, houses the Emmett Till Interpretive Center and features exhibits about the 14-year old Black teenager who was murdered by white men in Mississippi in 1955. Emmett’s death was a catalyst in the Civil Rights Movement.

Other new opportunities: Several Black museums have opened in recent years with more coming soon. Here's a list.

The center opened in 2016. Last summer, President Joe Biden signed a proclamation establishing the Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument at three historic sites in Mississippi and Illinois, where Emmett was from.

“It really is going to be a place more of reflection so people can think about (what happened),’’ said Daphne Chamberlain, a civil rights historian in Mississippi who is working with the center. "It's always important that we remember, and if we don't remember, what we're also doing is subscribing to all of these attacks on Black history.’’

African American historic sites have long been underfunded and undervalued, experts say.

The African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund has received more than 6,000 requests totaling $700 million in the past six years, including some from museums and historic sites.

Leggs said there aren’t enough funders for such preservation projects. “This is critically important, but this funding is often short-term gap investing,’’ he said.

More local communities should support Black museums, Leggs said, particularly since many are “cultural anchors.’’

The price tag for the International African American Museum grew to $100 million. It received money from private and public entities, including the state, county and city.

“Ask and you shall receive, but ask many, many times,’’ Matthews said.

Museum officials made the case that the new institution would fit with the region's brand of promoting its history. Matthews says that “is what began to make folks more and more comfortable.''

It has been only in more recent years that there has been the capability to build some Black museums, Stevenson said. He doesn’t believe the Equal Justice Initiative could have done it 10 years ago.

“We didn't have the ability to create institutions with autonomy like the institutions that we've created, but now we do,’’ Stevenson said. “We have resources. We have capacity. We just have to make sure we have vision.’’

EJI doesn’t take government funding. Visitors pay $5 for admission to the sites to keep it affordable.

The cost for the sculpture park, where construction is still underway, is expected to climb to about $20 million.

“What we did on the other two sites has made me believe it's an investment well worth making,’’ said Stevenson, adding that the response has been overwhelming. “When I hear some of the things I hear, when the students come through and people come through, there’s no limit to what I would spend to try to create that kind of consciousness.”
