Power Catamarans:

World cat 260 ccx.

The sixth model in the builder’s center console line , the World Cat 260 CCX , is compact but packed with features, including a wraparound U-lounge for relaxing or casting, a 30-gallon live well, a 120-quart insulated fish box and twin 200-hp outboards that draw on 180 gallons of fuel. This is a small but serious fishing machine.

Four Winns TH36

Four Winns TH36

The new Four Winns TH36 is the first outboard-powered catamaran introduced by the builder. The dual console design has a walkthrough windshield and room for 15 or more guests. Power is provided by twin 300-hp outboards upgradeable to 350s, making this runabout speedy and fun.

Leopard 40 PC

Leopard 40 PC

Joining her 46- and 53-foot siblings, the new Leopard 40 PC is a couple’s cruiser with many of the same features as the two larger models but on a much smaller (and for some, more approachable) platform. Engine packages range from 250 hp to 370 hp, and a top speed of 20 knots is expected.

Aquila 42 PC

Aquila 42 PC

The new 42 falls in the middle of the Aquila range and offers two staterooms, multiple sunbeds, a utility cabin , and numerous layout configuration options. She has engines from Volvo Penta and a spacious flybridge with steps that lead directly down to the foredeck for easy maneuvering.

HammerCat 45

HammerCat 45

The new HammerCat 45 is versatile and can work as a sportfish platform, a dive boat, a day cruiser, or a superyacht tender. This center console has a hardtop and a Carolina bow and is built in epoxy and carbon fiber to keep weight down and performance up. Expect a 55- knot top end and a 30-knot cruise depending on the engine package selected.

Sailing Catamarans:

Fountaine pajot tanna 47.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

This French-built sailing cruiser has space in spades. The new FP Tanna 47 is based on (and shares a hull design with) her predecessor, the Saona 47, but clever tweaks have made this a whole new boat. The cabin house and deck have been revamped, the flybridge is 40% larger, the salon/ galley has gained storage options, and the helm is more ergonomic than before.

Bali 4.4

Video Source: bali-catamarans.com

Bali has captured the hearts of sailors who love lots of living space, large household-style appliances, and simplicity. Bali cats are unique for their combination salon/ cockpit layout, and the 4.4 joins her siblings in this groundbreaking design. With the touch of a button, a “garage door” lifts, connecting the indoors with the outdoors with minimum redundancy in living arrangements.

balance 442

Fast and packed with proven cruising features, the Balance 442 is the little sister to last year’s 482. Perfectly sized for couples, this boat was designed for distance cruisers by distance cruisers. There’s even an option for a large solar array to make living at anchor easy and just about carbon neutral.

Lagoon 55

French catamaran builder, Lagoon, has introduced a new VPLP-designed cruising cat that you can test in charter soon. The Lagoon 55 slots just above the newly introduced 51and are offered as a large and comfortable flybridge model with up to six cabins to accommodate an overnight crowd.

Minicat 310

Minicat 310

Not all cats are of the large, expensive fiberglass variety. An affordable multihull can be had in Europe’s Minicat 310 Sport, an inflatable beach cat weighing only 77 pounds and packing down into a single bag. This cat has sophisticated big boat features like roller furling, a fully battened mainsail, keels, and an attachment for a small outboard.

SAILING MULTIHULLS

Sunreef staged the world premiere of the 70 Eco at the Cannes Yachting Festival a year after the 80 Eco debuted at the same show, also in Port Canto as part of the sailing display. Based on the Sunreef 70 sailing catamaran, the 70 Eco offers over 3,100sqft of living space including large outdoor areas in the aft cockpit, bow terrace and large flybridge.

The first 70 Eco, One Planet , features 81.5sqm of solar panels across the hulls, superstructure and bimini roof, offering up to 20kWp. The show also featured the first 60 Eco, Surreal , making its first appearance at a major show since launching last year, four years after Sunreef debuted the 60 E, which featured a carbon-fibre hard top with solar panels and electric propulsion.

Fountaine Pajot Thira 80

Fountaine Pajot also hosted one of the most exciting world premieres of the year, as it unveiled its Thira 80 sailing catamaran at Port Canto. Announced at Cannes last year, Thira 80 is the La Rochelle builder’s largest yacht to date and features retractable side decks, expansive fore and aft cockpits, a magnificent flybridge, twin helm stations, and a master suite with Jacuzzi.

Fountaine Pajot also unveiled the Smart Electric version of its Aura 51 at this year’s International Multihull Show at La Grande Motte on France’s south coast. The original Aura 51 was launched last year and was the brand’s first model to feature the option of solar panels integrated into the entire coachroof and flybridge.

Bali Catsmart

Bali, owned by Catana Group, debuted its Catsmart at La Grande Motte, presenting a new entry-level model to complement its 40ft Catspace, 4.2. 4.4. 4.6. 4.8 and flagship 5.4 models. The 38ft Catsmart has a 21ft-plus beam and is the brand’s first model without a flybridge, but new features include two helm stations aft and the option of two, three or four cabins. The Catsmart retains brand signatures such as the ‘Bali door’, sliding saloon windows and solid foredeck.

SAILING MONOHULLS

Nautor Swan also had a major world premiere at the Monaco show with the global debut of the Swan 108 carbon sailing superyacht, which features a hull length of 108ft 3in and an overall length of 114ft 10in with the bowsprit.

Positioned between the Swan 98 and 120 in the Swan Maxi line, the 108 features exterior styling by Lucio Micheletti of Micheletti + Partners, interior design by Misa Poggi and naval architecture by German Frers, the 82-year-old Argentine who has designed for Swan for over four decades.

Jeanneau has debuted two new sailing yachts this year, starting with the world premiere of the Jeanneau Yachts 55 at Boot, with the model showing at the likes of Cannes, Southampton and Genoa in September.

Jeanneau Yachts 55

Like the Jeanneau Yachts 60 and flagship 65, the 55 is designed by Philippe Briand and has an interior by Winch Design. The most notable innovation is two extensive seating-cum-lounging areas aft of the helms, while it also features a covered cockpit, private access to each of the three cabins, and a large retractable hydraulic swim platform.

The Groupe Beneteau builder is staging the world premiere of the Sun Fast 30 One Design at the Southampton show while the racer also exhibits at Grand Pavois La Rochelle in September, although the first hull was shown in the Rolex Fastnet Race Village at the end of July.

Yacht Style, New Models, Sunreef, Fountaine Pajot, Dufour, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Bali, Swan, 108

Beneteau Oceanis 37.1

Beneteau hosted the Oceanis 37.1 premiere at Cannes before the new model appeared at the La Rochelle and Genoa shows in September, and then the Barcelona show and Annapolis Sailboat Show (October 12-15).

Featuring naval architecture by Marc Lombard, and deck and interior design by Italy’s Nauta Design, the Oceanis 37.1 has an overall length of 39ft 2in based on an 36ft 1in hull with a beam of 12ft 10in. Part of the seventh generation of Oceanis cruisers, the 37.1 joins a six-strong series also featuring the 30.1, 34.1, 40.1, 46.1 and 51.1.

Yacht Style, New Models, Sunreef, Fountaine Pajot, Dufour, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Bali, Swan, 108

Dufour’s premieres included the 41, which debuted at Cannes before gaining further exposure at Southampton and Genoa. Featuring an exterior by Felci Yacht Design and an interior by Ardizio Design, the model has an overall length of 39ft 4in based on a 36ft 1in hull with a beam of 13ft 1in.

Available in Adventure, Ocean and Performance versions, the Dufour 41 offers three or even four cabins and the option of a utility room. The shipyard says the interior offers “60 per cent more light than other models on the market”, with owners able to choose Europe or Boston ‘atmospheres’.  Fountaine Pajot’s sister brand also debuted the Smart Electric edition of the Dufour 530 at Cannes.

new sailing catamarans 2023

“The “luxury performance cruising cat” has been an exclusive animal for decades. Upwind agility usually loses out to the added weight of all those “luxuries” like extra volume, multiple refrigerators, huge battery banks, large engines and classy finishes. The term itself holds a vague promise, but to most keptics it’s a flat-out misnomer. But intrepid builders keep trying to find the ideal marriage of comfort and speed and that’s a good thing. With each effort, we get closer to that “perfect” combination and that’s why I found so much to like on the new Seawind 1600.” VIEW HERE

New Boat Showcase 2023: Excitement Abounds

  • By Cruising World Editors
  • September 26, 2022

A logjam of boat debuts that were postponed during the pandemic finally broke free in 2022, bringing a heavy influx of new models to the docks. Thus, the question on our minds heading into this fall boat-show season is: What will be left for the 2023 model year? The answer: plenty . The lineup of new boats set to debut at venues this fall and into next year remains stout, with a wide variety of creative new designs, many of which are nominees in this year’s CW Boat of the Year awards. In the following pages, we offer a sneak peek of the most buzzworthy launches. You can follow the URLs for a deeper dive into boats that pique your interest, then inspect them in person at a show near you.

Oyster 495

Oyster Yachts collaborated with Humphreys Yacht Design on this elegant 50-footer, which focuses on couples and other shorthanded crews who are headed for bluewater adventures. An in-mast furling main and electric winches are standard, as are twin wheels in the cockpit, located a bit forward on the clutter-free deck. The 495 has three staterooms below. oysteryachts.com

J/45

With more than 15,000 J’s built since 1977, the team at J/Boats is now adding this 45-footer, which has a carbon, double-spreader fractional rig. The boat is built tough with SCRIMP resin-infused molding for the foam-cored hull and deck. Below, French interior designer Isabelle Racoupeau added an elegant touch to the decor.  jboats.com

First 44

Bridging the gap between high-tech racing and performance cruising, the First 36 is designed to fully plane in a moderate breeze. Or, owners can ditch the racing gear altogether and take the family out cruising aboard the three-stateroom model, which has a galley and a central fridge. Part of the same model line is the First 44, which is available in a performance version with a different deck plan, and options for keels and masts. beneteau.com

Excess 14

Excess Catamarans in France, following up on the launch of the 37-foot Excess 11, has added the 52-foot Excess 14 to its model line. The boat has a low boom, reduced windage thanks to lower freeboard, redesigned hull windows, an aft-set coachroof, a forward stepped mast, a composite bowsprit and an exposed forefoot. Three- and four-stateroom versions are available with an option for a sky lounge. excess-catamarans.com

Bali 4.4

With piercing bows and exterior lines drawn by designer Xavier Fäy, the Bali 4.4 has a forward cockpit with dedicated lounging and sunbathing areas, as well as separate interior access. There are living areas amidships and aft, and a helm station with panoramic views on the coachroof, accessible from both sides. bali-catamarans.com

Italia 11.98

Limited wetted surface and a generous sail area help the Italia 11.98 perform well, even in light air. This boat is designed for shorthanded ease of use. There are three staterooms below (one forward, two aft) and two heads. Owners also can outfit the boat with a full race package. italiayachts.com

Aura 51

New from this French builder of sailing cats is the Aura 51, which has an open living arrangement that connects the salon, galley and cockpit. The flybridge is big enough to accommodate 2,000 watts’ worth of flush-deck solar panels for sustainable cruising. The boat is available in four layouts, including a “full maestro” version that dedicates the port hull to an owner’s stateroom. fountaine-pajot.com

Contest 49CS

The Dutch builder’s first aft cockpit model in the 50-foot range includes options for all-electric propulsion and sustainability. Living areas forward of and abaft the inboard twin helm stations create space for guests to spread out. The three-stateroom accommodations plan leaves space for a tender garage and a submersible swim platform. An integral carbon-fiber A-frame mast configuration has an incorporated hydraulic furler for easier off-wind sailing. contestyachts.com

Dehler 46SQ

The Dehler 46SQ strikes a balance between performance racing and relaxation. The redesigned cockpit is uncluttered, with fewer plastic parts and more elements stowed out of sight. An integrated footrest allows for extra comfort at the helm, and folds flush to the deck when not in use. There’s a remote-control-operated swim platform for water access. For race days, owners have membrane sails and carbon rigging.  dehler.com

Dufour 37

The Dufour 37 is built to handle easy coastal cruising, ocean itineraries and performance sailing. The 37 is available in two- or three-stateroom versions, and the design emphasizes outdoor living, with extra space in the cockpit. The 37’s new hull form is built to deliver a greater power-to-weight ratio, and the mast has been elongated for increased sail area. dufour-yachts.com

Elan E6

Elan Yachts worked with Humphreys Yacht Design and the technical team at Gurit to create the 50-foot E6. The team used 3D Vail technology to enhance lightness and stiffness, and to optimize the hull with a T-shaped keel. Performance characteristics are the result of scale-model in-house testing with an Olympic sailing team. This boat is designed to be sailed by an experienced couple, with twin rudders and helms, and with Harken winches positioned for precision trimming and fast, unobstructed movements. elan-yachts.com

Grand Soleil 40

The GS40 from Grand Soleil Yachts is designed for speed and responsiveness without sacrificing volume and comfort. Multiple versions are available: performance, which includes four winches and a self-tacking jib; standard, with three staterooms, one head and a technical compartment for added stowage; and a three-stateroom, two-head layout. A 72-footer is also on the way. The builder says it will have an Italian aesthetic. grandsoleil.net

Hallberg-Rassy 400

Swedish builder Hallberg-Rassy is premiering a sporty-looking 40-footer designed by Germán Frers. The HR400 has a sizable cockpit, and twin wheels and rudders. Owners can choose a slightly overlapping genoa or self-tacking jib, one or two heads, and a two- or three-stateroom layout below. hallberg-rassy.com

B-Yachts Brenta 34

The first of a new generation of B-Yachts, the Brenta 34 is billed as a luxury racer that can sail fast in all wind conditions, yet remain easy to handle with a crew or singlehanded. Performance comes from the boat’s light weight, minimalistic interior and sleek waterlines. Owners who want to use the B34 for cruising can opt for a removable cockpit table, spray hood, hot shower in the cockpit, and removable swim ladder.  b-yachts.com

Hanse 460

The Hanse 460 is the first Hanse yacht designed by French design team Berret-Racoupeau. Innovations include a hydrodynamic hull shape, a tall rig for a maximized sail plan, and a standard bowsprit with an integrated anchor arm. Accommodations can include six to 10 berths, with a roomy owner’s stateroom and an upsize galley. hanseyachts.com

Lyman-Morse 46

Few builders are creating wood performance cruisers these days,  but Maine’s Lyman-Morse yard is. The cold-molded 46-footer is designed by Kiwi Kevin Dibley, and is fashioned from Douglas fir and western red cedar. Double headsails and twin wheels help make the boat easily capable of 10-plus-knot speeds, while the onboard ambience comes in part from Herreshoff-style white bulkheads and varnished trim below.  lymanmorse.com

Jeanneau 55

Following recent launches of the 60 and 65, Jeanneau now offers the Jeanneau 55, which is a collaboration between Phillipe Briand and Winch Design. Its dual-cockpit deck plan leaves the aft cockpit dedicated to relaxation, with the forward cockpit set up for handling. Below, the owner’s stateroom is forward and occupies about two-thirds of the interior. jeanneauamerica.com

Lagoon 51

The flybridge on the Lagoon 51 spans 80 percent of the coachroof, helping to create enough space on board for separate sunbathing and dining areas, roomy stern platforms, and more than 3,000 watts of integrated solar panels for greener cruising. The boat is available with three to six staterooms for private cruising or charter. To help with flow when more people are aboard, the salon has improved circulation with the mast set forward, which also increases the volume in the owner’s stateroom.  cata-lagoon.com

Moody DS41

The DS41 is a sporty design with a slender bow, steeply pitched stem, and convex sheerline. The hull windows and a sweeping roofline blend the deckhouse into the overall aesthetic for a one-level living concept. A high-performance sail plan helps with speed, while the minimalist interior belowdecks is warm and inviting.  moodyyachts.com

Nautitech 44 Open

The 44 Open is the first new Nautitech model in three years, and it focuses on the needs of private owners such as couples, families and other shorthanded crews. Naval architect Marc Lombard drew the slippery hull. The boat has a reversed bow, a boom mounted low above the coachroof, and a sweeping curve to the deck line. nautitechcatamarans.com

Neel 43

The Neel 43 is the smallest yacht in the builder’s lineup, but it’s built to be big on performance. Designed by Marc Lombard, the 43 is intended to be easily operable by a shorthanded crew. The helm station is to starboard with a triple seat for comfort and commanding views. neel-trimarans.com

X4.3

The X4.3 underwent a serious makeover for 2023, essentially becoming a smaller version of the X5.6. The modifications are aplenty, including are designed hull shape with the max beam brought further aft and with soft chines, allowing improved downwind performance and a wider cockpit; a redesigned deck and deck liner; a new sprayhood layout for added protection from weather at sea and improved sightlines at the helm; and larger berths aft, thanks to a slight raising of the cockpit floor.  x-yachts.com

Signature 650

Designed by Franck Darnet and Marc Lombard, the Privilege 650 is an evolution of the builder’s 640. New features include an adjustable interior layout, more windows and headroom, a redesigned foredeck and sun lounge, and an aft-facing cockpit lounge. The optional carbon rig adds 19.7 inches to the mast and 11.8 inches to the boom, adding 32 square feet to the genoa and 64.5 square feet to the mainsail. privilegecatamaransamerica.com

Oceanis 34.1

attention to making the onboard experience feel even roomier. For starters, the Oceanis 34.1 has more volume forward in the owner’s stateroom than the 35.1 it replaces in the builder’s model line. That volume is thanks in part to a flared bow and hard chines that run from stem to stern. On a larger scale, Beneteau’s new flagship, the Oceanis Yacht 60, has the same volume as the brand’s 62-foot predecessor.  beneteau.com

NEW Sunreef catamarans, launched in the last 12 months and which charter in 2023!

10 minutes read

Published by Eldin Basic (TpMBA) Senior Charter Broker at SuperSailYachts.com

When it comes to most popular charter yachts, luxury boats and superyachts, there is only one name at the moment. Sunreef Yachts. Fountain Pajot and Cata Lagoon as well as a few other niche brands do play a part in the market, yet on a superyacht level, other than a Lagoon 77, nothing much is of major interest. The 145ft Hemisphere remains the only megayacht amongst catamarans, yet she is the lone player as for now no other 100ft+ super cats are available for charters. And while recently announced Sunreef 100 Eco, a sustainable super cat with electric engines, composite-integrated solar cells and the best marine superstructure worldwide, is not yet launched, similarly exclusive, stylish and prestigious catamarans are already cruising within the hotspots of the most interesting sailing destinations.

new sailing catamarans 2023

Take for example RELENTLESS II 80 , a sublime Sunreef 80 which is usually cruising the Virgin Islands. Permanently based in St Thomas, USVI’s and available from just above 90,000 US$’s per week on an all inclusive basis, this is the most desirable supersailyacht available for private charters at this moment in time. And while strict covid-19 rules apply to all guests, with vaccination being a must, the design of this boat simply leaves no room for exclusions. Professional masseuse takes care of the times when you need extra attention and when mental health may need a boost, chef pampers you and keep you perfectly fed, as one guest put it, and crews knowledge of the islands, their energy, kindness and knowledge are second to none. Where else can you get a perfect Michelin star lunch served on board to enjoy both the food and perfect view and just after you had a massage or before you head to the water to enjoy spectacular snorkelling experience? This can only be available on a supercat such as RELENTLESS II 80 and at a rate of 100,000 US$’s all inclusive for 8 guests it’s a steal. If you add an opportunity to fly with owners private jet, albeit at an extra cost and enjoy rain showers on deck, after an exhaustive exploration of islands while sailing, water skiing and swimming and than being pampered by what industry may call best crew in the superyacht industry and you will want to return very soon indeed.

new sailing catamarans 2023

Similarly exclusive are two other Sunreef 80’s. One is OHANA, the same type of a super cat sailing boat and the other is PRONTO, a 78ft power cat based on Paradise island within the Bahamas. The differences between OHANA and RELENTLESS II 80 are minimal, yet at the same time huge. Both are as exclusive as a Sunreef 80 sailing catamarans can get, with OHANA being based in the Virgin Islands, featuring a hot tub, 4x guest cabins, similar charter rates as RELENTLESS II 80 and much more. OHANA may even go a step further with 2x seabobs on board and scuba diving equipment for those keen on diving directly off the boat. With accommodation for 10 guests in 5 cabins, she can also be seen as better value.

As some superyacht charter parties may prefer to cruise at faster speeds and be pampered by an extra crew member, wouldn’t PRONTO be the way to go? With 2xV8 MAN 1200HP engines offering double the cruising speeds of sailing catamarans and carrying what can only be described as a proper superyacht chase boat, the 37ft Axopar Sun Top as well as a SeaDoo GTX Waverunner, the PRONTO takes exclusivity of super cat luxury to yet another level. What other boat will offer such a modern, prestigious, exclusive and spacious environment allowing you to explore the Bahamas and Exumas during your regular Thanksgiving sailing getaway or New Year yachting party ?

new sailing catamarans 2023

Mediterranean based super cats and Sunreef Yachts: When it comes to the Mediterranean, sailing on Sunreef yachts gets even more interesting. The choice of Sunreef catamarans is greater; itineraries even more historic, exclusive and diverse. VIVA LA VIDA, a NEW Sunreef 80 based in Sardinia or the Balearic’s is the go to get super cat. Charter rates start from 70,000 Eur with local VAT adding a minimum of 20-24% with all expenses on top. Not very economical for sure, yet at this super cat level, nothing is out of ordinary and VIVA LA VIDA is not to be missed if you are keen to party in Ibiza or shop in Porto Cervo.

new sailing catamarans 2023

In case you would need to accommodate 10 guests, I am sure we can arrange one of the other Sunreef 80’s launched in 2020 or 2021 and which have such a layout. There are at least two such catamarans around indeed. If you still prefer latest 2022-23 models, AGATA BLU in Greece is the way to go. Available from only 54,000 Eur (plus VAT and APA) she is a great value 75ft supercat. Her superyacht crew of 4 will usually take you on a one way cruise from Athens – Mykonos with optional stopover on Santorini for those fabulous sunsets and mesmerising views. STILL ALIVE, another Sunreef 70 (2022) model is even more flexible, as they will cruise both the Caribbean waters, usually between the Grenadines and St Barths, as well as the Mediterranean, most likely Italy or Sardinia and Corsica regions. Whichever Sunreef 70 super cat you choose; supersailyachts.com will ensure you get the best value, great service and top notch attention at all times. At least we would like to think so; wouldn’t you !?

new sailing catamarans 2023

Luxury Sunreef Catamarans: Not every yacht is a superyacht or a super cat. Alegria 67’s by Fountain Pajot, NEW Lagoon SIXTY 5’s and well maintained older Lagoon 620’s or Samana 59’s do offer more of a competition to Sunreef 60’s in this range however. YGO and YLIME are newest SUNREEF 60’s, both usually cruising the West Mediterranean and offering accommodation for up to 8 guests in 4 en suite cabins. Absolutely the most popular luxury sailing catamarans on the planet, these are great value de-luxe charter boats in everyone’s book. The looks, designs, colours and space on board of these exclusive multihulls are unbeatable. If you are keen to impress and be impressed at an affordable rate on a luxury yacht that may not be a superyacht, but is definitely a prestigious and luxury platform for your yachting experience, these are the boats to turn to. All-around sailing leisure yachts, with completely refreshed superstructure that offers recognisable high bulwarks and classy exterior lines, these charter yachts underscore the modern lifestyles on the water. Buyers of such new vessels can enjoy outstanding options when it comes to customisation, and in order to make their boat as unique as it gets. With 36m2 room, the spacious flybridge is the piece de resistance on these boats and when cruising, most clients will simply want to enjoy vistas provided from these elevated and unique platforms. Join them and charter one of the Sunreef 60’s in 2023 too !

new sailing catamarans 2023

Finally, the smallest amongst the exclusive Sunreef yachts line up are Sunreef 50 sailing catamarans. SWEET DREAMS and ZARA are the latest models, both cruising the Southern Adriatic shores, islands and coastlines. One way charters between Dubrovnik and Split will be the most interesting itineraries with islands such as Hvar, Korcula and Brac having the most interesting anchorages, peaceful bays and busy stopovers. Where else can you enjoy a luxury of a Sunreef styling, Dalmatian spirit and fine dining than on board of one of these de-luxe sailing catamarans ? If you are keen on a long-term charter and sabbatical sailing holiday, renting a Sunreef catamaran for 4-8 weeks before deciding to purchase one is the way to go for sure and both these lend themselves as perfect options to do so. We invite you to consider transatlantic crossings on one of the Sunreef yachts too, as in all sizes we can offer such experiences with start in the Canary islands, around the start of November each year, and arriving in St Lucia or Martinique 3-4 weeks later. The charter rates vary but in general start from around 60,000 Eur and can go as high as 125,000 Eur plus any VAT and APA per crossing.

new sailing catamarans 2023

To charter any of the Sunreef catamarans, including super cats such as SUNREEF 80 or luxury boats such as Sunreef 60, you can always rely on SuperSailYachts.com who will also guide you in creating a unique sailing itinerary, bespoke alergie-free menu and with exclusive on shore excursion tips not available anywhere else. We can also arrange purchase of any new boats directly from the shipyard and this includes newest Sunreef 80 Eco, Sunreef Eco 100 and Sunreef 140 models, all of which can be customised and bought with a suitably negotiated discount.

2023 Boat of the Year Best Dinghy: Tiwal 3R

  • By Dave Reed
  • December 16, 2022

Tiwal 3R

Sailing World Magazine’s  annual Boat of the Year tests are conducted in Annapolis, Maryland, following the US Sailboat Show. With independent judges exhaustively inspecting the boats on land and putting them through their paces on the water, this year’s fleet of new performance-sailing boats spanned from small dinghies to high-tech bluewater catamarans. Here’s the best of the best from our  2023 Boat of the Year nominees »

The High-Pressure Ripper

  • Tiwal 3R 2023 Best Dinghy
  • Stated purpose: Recreational sailing, one-design and rally racing
  • Crew: One to two
  • Praise for: Performance, comfort, portability
  • Est. price as sailed: $8,900

The surest way to grow sailing is to make it easy to get on the water with minimal hassle on a boat that is exhilarating to sail—and that’s exactly what the inflatable and powered-up Tiwal 3R does. Thousands of Tiwal fanatics around the world can’t be wrong; they love their zippy little crafts, and the Tiwal community has grown ever larger since its young French innovators launched the first model a decade ago. The Tiwal 3R is the continuing evolution of a great idea—with even better execution. Tiwal boats keep getting better, and this one is its best yet.

The “R” is for Race, and that’s because after two years of playing and adventure racing on the early-edition Tiwal 3s, keener owners started asking for more. But the engineering required to make Tiwal’s high-pressure inflatable hull and aluminum frame take on greater rig and structural loads that had them stumped for nearly two years, says Emmanuel Bertrand. They kept breaking it until they got it right.

At 10 feet and 121 pounds fully rigged, the magic of the Tiwal 3R is its portability, which would explain why the company says it sells so many in urban areas around the world. The sail, hull, blades, five-part composite spar and boom, and aluminum frame pack into two 5-foot duffel bags. To put it all together at whatever water’s edge takes about 30 minutes; it’s mere minutes if the boat is coming off the car top already pumped and assembled.

Tiwal 3R

The PVC hull construction is identical to all other Tiwals, but the design for the 3R is a big improvement, with a more pronounced V-shape, a bit more rocker, and a reinforcement plate on the bottom near the transom, which gives it stiffness and a cleaner exit. “It’s difficult to get a hard corner on inflatables,” Stewart says, “so that’s a great solution to give it a nice sharp edge and a cleaner break so the water isn’t bubbling up over the back.”

When I got my weight in the right spot, the boat just took off. It’s quicker than quick. —Chuck Allen

The gust-responsive rig and big sail, built with North Sails racing cloth, is what takes the boat a big step from the recreational sailor’s Tiwal 3 to the racing sailor’s 3R, Powlison says. “This is the same size sail as a Laser, 77 square feet, which is a lot of power. When you get the vang set right, it does make a big difference. It is an effective control that they got right.”

Powlison’s only desire was to be able to get the sail controls to run farther back on the rack, accepting, however, that this would unnecessarily complicate the setup.

Tiwal 3R

Allen, who’s been a Tiwal fan since the original, is impressed once again. “You definitely get a lot more performance out of this thing,” he says after sailing the boat in 10 to 15 knots and flat water. “I got hit with a puff and was like, dang! This thing’s got some wheels. It’s much faster and stiffer. I’m 170 pounds and was able to stay out on the rack the entire time, even when it got light.”

Stewart’s assessment of the 3R is that it’s built for a slightly more advanced sailor. “This thing is higher tech, with a lot more control lines, so it’s a bit more boat to handle. That being said, I’m a big guy (the manufacturer’s stated maximum load on the wing is 242 pounds), and I was never sitting in water, so it will accommodate a wide range of people.”

Getting the purchase systems for the 4-to-1 cunningham and the two-part vang (all of which are doubled-ended) into the mast collar hardware was an engineering exercise, says creator Marion Excoffon. But the end result is a system of color-coded lines and color-matched Harken blocks that work effectively and smoothly to depower the sail. Once the control systems are assembled, they don’t need to be rerun. When rigging, simply slide the mast into the collar, hook up the mainsheet, attach the rudder, and cast off for a fast and sporty adventure.

Tiwal 3R

“Every time I got a little puff, the boat zipped right along,” Allen says. “The foils are stiff and shaped well, so the boat goes upwind really nicely.
