History of Oyster Yachts

Oyster Yachts is a world-renowned manufacturer of luxury sailing yachts, with more than 40 years of history in the industry. Founded in 1973 in Great Yarmouth, a town on the East Coast of England, the company has since become a recognised leader in the production of high-quality sailing vessels.

The company moved to Wroxham in Norfolk in 1979, where their first launch of a luxurious cruising yacht - the Oyster 25P took place. By 1982, Oyster Yachts had developed a strong presence in the European boat market and had become a key name in sailing events around the world.

In 2017, Oyster Yachts underwent a major restructuring due to challenging market conditions. This restructuring paved the way for a new investment programme with a plan to expand and increase production levels. As a result, the company has seen a resurgence, and now boasts one of the best ranges of luxury sailing yachts on the market today.

Better by design

The next-generation oyster 595 sets the standard for future true bluewater cruisers with her outstanding ocean-going capabilities and liveaboard qualities..

She displays all the hallmarks of an Oyster, from the impressive volume of the Humphreys-designed hull with twin rudders and wide, clutter-free flush teak decks, excellent stowage, a choice of entertaining spaces and the optional bathing platform.

Available in two keel formats, standard or with a shallow-draft centreboard keel, which is ideal for those wanting to explore shallow coves and cruising grounds. For ultimate bluewater adventures, the extended transom variant provides additional stowage and a truly vast lazarette.

The ergonomically designed cockpit features twin helm stations, alfresco dining for eight and a sprayhood on the deck saloon to keep guests protected from the weather, whatever the conditions. Safe and easy to move around under sail, she is fun to sail and a joy to relax on while anchored in secluded bays.

The Oyster 595 is designed to perform day in, and day out in all sea conditions, to deliver safe, comfortable and enjoyable sailing experiences.

Equipped with the latest and most reliable sailing equipment, she is a pleasure to sail shorthanded. Her silky smooth, soft motion, even in a head sea, delivers consistently fast passage-making at only a modest angle of heel, making light work of ocean crossings.

Unlike other ocean cruisers for sale, push-button in-mast furling, electric mainsail and genoa winches come as standard and she offers responsive finger-tip control on the helm, thanks to the twin rudder design. The helm stations feature all the technology required for relaxed operation and navigation, with the winches within easy reach. There is a large sail locker on the foredeck to store your sails, spinnaker and Code Zero, and the long waterline, excellent stability and wide beam aft harness the significant sail power, no matter what sail wardrobe you choose.

The word ‘quality’ never quite captures the meticulous finish of our yachts. Our constant endeavour for excellence brings together our master craftspeople with advanced materials, production techniques and the latest engineering technology.

This is reflected in a hull design that epitomises the standards Oyster believes all bluewater cruising yachts should meet – an uncompromising strength of construction. Built to rigorous Lloyd’s Register certification, we demand only the very best materials. From the drawing board, we overspecify the hull superstructure by four times the strength when compared to the competition, with a strong, longitudinal construction and additional materials around the keel structure and slam zones. For added peace of mind, Lloyd's surveyors also sign off each hull and deck as part of the build process, reflecting our uncompromising approach to quality control.

We don't accept anything less than perfection in terms of fit, finish and engineering integrity, that's why the Oyster 595 has outstanding quality and character.

Contemporary, luxurious styling and volume below decks make for the perfect living space for any adventure.

luxury walnut interior sailing yacht saloon

Inspired living space

The oyster 595’s contemporary interior is refined and luxurious. the saloon, the social heart of this boat, offers a wealth of space and convenience for crew and guests..

The open longitudinal galley, navigation station and saloon are light, bright and airy thanks to the seascape and wrap-around saloon windows – forward units are opening, providing excellent natural ventilation at anchor. Every detail, practicality and seamanlike feature on this bluewater cruiser has been considered, from the optional convertible saloon table, which doubles as a day bed, the pop-up TV addition, galley fiddles for bracing when heeled, through to the extensive range of galley appliances. There is deep, comfortable seating for relaxing, with space for six at the saloon table, along with lots of stowage, essential for any bluewater adventure. Combine this with the handcrafted fit-out to a standard rarely found on a 60 foot sailboat, blended seamlessly with practicality and seaworthiness, the Oyster 595 makes living aboard for extended periods a truly pleasurable experience.

With the welcome hull volume, choice of hardwoods, exquisite fabrics and materials, the Oyster 595 offers versatile configuration options and many opportunities for personalisation.

Building on ideas and innovations from our fleet, the 595 offers a comprehensive range of accommodation options. There are three well-appointed layouts to choose from – an aft ensuite master cabin with three guest cabins, one amidships and two guest cabins forward, creating privacy and comfort for up to eight family or crew in any configuration. The aft ensuite master option provides private access to a spacious cabin featuring Oyster’s signature seascape windows, which flood the space with natural light. There is also a sofa, optional television and ample stowage.

Throughout the cabins, Oyster’s attention to detail reveals itself in everything, from the beautiful handcrafted cabinetry to the deep mattresses, island berths, optional full-length mirrors and cedar-lined wardrobes. Not forgetting the walk-in showers and mood lighting for any occasion.

The latest, new-generation technology adds another dimension to the capability of the Oyster 595, whether you plan to relax or work aboard her.

Technology and tradition come together in complete harmony on the 595, making her well-connected with seamlessly integrated navigation, entertainment and onboard systems. Oyster Command™, Oyster’s intuitive CZone-managed digital switching system, connects everything from the entertainment, utilities and lighting, to monitoring the latest black box technology, which provides real-time status and control of onboard systems through the Oyster owners App.

Specify your favourite AV systems, satellite connectivity and WiFi technology to keep connected and able to work aboard in the world’s remotest corners. All technology and systems are specified for robustness and reliability and nothing is installed that has not been proven at sea.

How Much Does An Oyster Yacht Cost? (6 Examples)

' src=

An Oyster Yacht is the epitome of style, elegance, and functionality in the sailing world and beyond. The British company is renowned for building luxury, bluewater sailing yachts, to which other companies strive to compare.

Table of Contents

Each yacht is semi-custom built to a new owner’s taste, so while each yacht will have the same classic Oyster lines, the interior and specifications of each yacht will be very different:

Meet The Fleet Of Oyster Yachts

Oyster Yachts is a privately owned British yacht-building company that can trace its roots back to 1973. Their first yacht, the UFO 34, was the first of many to be developed by Oyster Marine.

oyster yachts price list

By 1978 Oyster Marine introduced a 46 ft cruising ketch designed by Holman & Pye. This pioneering design was the first Oyster yacht to feature the Deck Saloon, which has since become the company’s trademark.

Over the years, Oyster has continued increasing their yachts’ size.

In 1997, the company launched a 53-foot yacht in collaboration with Rob Humphreys, followed by another Humphreys design, a 62-foot yacht, in 2002.

Today, Oyster Yachts builds luxury sailing yachts ranging in size from 50 feet to 90 feet, all still designed by Humphreys Yacht Design and the Oyster Design Team.

How much does a 50-feet yacht cost?

1. Oyster 495

The all-new Oyster 495 is elegantly designed and exquisitely built from bow to stern. It’s no wonder it has been nominated for the prestigious 2023 European Yacht of the Year award.

The new Oyster 495 is the latest collaboration between Humphreys Yacht Design and Oyster’s in-house design studio – the first boat was launched in August 2022.

This yacht combines all the features you expect from Oyster –  innovative design, excellent sailing characteristics, quality materials, and superb British craftsmanship – in a thoroughly modern 50-foot bluewater sailing yacht.

[Price for the base model: £1.2 million ex VAT]

2. Oyster 565

The Oyster 565, launched in 2020, is a seriously impressive yacht. It’s a thoroughly modern design that is both good-looking and spacious.

It’s certainly an expensive yacht, but for a good reason. It is one of the few production yachts that includes an extremely high standard spec – you can just sail away.

Plus, the engineering quality and level of finish raise the bar.

No yacht is perfect, but in terms of design and execution, the Oyster 565 is as close as you’ll find to perfection on a production-built cruising yacht.

[Price for the base model: £1.4 million ex VAT]

3. Oyster 595

The new Oyster 595 is the fastest-selling Oyster yacht to date, with 16 orders before the first one even hit the water.

With an overall length of 62ft 6in/19.05m LOA, the Oyster 595 replaces the Oyster 625, but don’t let the numbers fool you. We’re told the model’s name was chosen partly to debunk the myth that a yacht over 60ft is too big to handle by a family or small crew.

So, this yacht has been designed to be easily managed by a couple and includes hydraulics and push-button controls for hoisting sails and maneuvering.

As is typical with an Oyster Yacht, the 595 comes with an extremely high spec as standard, which includes retractable bow and stern thrusters, a genset (generator and dedicated engine), hydraulics systems, automated in-mast furling, the latest electronics, and a state-of-the-art lighting system.

It’s an impressive yacht – the Oyster 595 is built to a superyacht standard of design and finish quality:

[Price for the base model: £2.3 million ex VAT]

Why ARE Oyster Yachts So Expensive? We explain more here!

4. Oyster 675

The Oyster 675 is the centerpiece of the fleet.

This yacht has been designed as the perfect combination of size and practicality in a 70-foot yacht. It’s a versatile design that two people can easily sail, or you can take a full crew and up to eight guests.

The powerful, eye-catching hull is well-proportioned and offers enormous volume down below. This makes this boat extremely versatile, and a wide variety of layouts and customized build options are available.

The signature Oyster attention to detail can be seen throughout every inch of this boat, and the Oyster’s renowned build quality offers complete reassurance and confidence at sea.

This is a real, go-anywhere bluewater yacht.

[Price for the base model: £2.48 million ex VAT]

5. Oyster 745

The Oyster 745 is a beautifully built boat that has been designed with easy access to all the systems.

First launched in 2014, this is a long-range, bluewater cruising yacht perfect for sailing to the world’s remotest corners. However, you will need a small crew to assist and maintain the boat.

With dedicated crew quarters (the smallest Oyster in the fleet to offer this), this should not pose a problem.

The spacious interior below offers different layouts, plus a private en-suite crew cabin with its own access, which guarantees privacy for you, your family, and your friends.

With generous cabins, enormous storage space, and tankage, this yacht is well-suited to long-haul live-aboard adventures or for local cruising and entertaining.

In addition, this award-winning bluewater sailboat’s design and layout options make it the perfect model to offer for charter when you are not on board enjoying the boat.

[Price for the base model: £4 million ex VAT]

6. Oyster 885 Series II

The Oyster 885 Series II is a stunning 90-foot bluewater sailing yacht in production since 2013.

This yacht has been designed and engineered to deliver uncompromising performance. It will need a crew to sail, but it can take you anywhere in the world in luxury and style. The Oyster 885 is the largest yacht in Oyster Marine’s production range.

Built to Lloyds and MCA (Maritime & Coastguard Agency) standards, this yacht is perfect for commercial charter while still under the 24m load line rule, saving many red tapes. This allows an owner to recoup part of his investment in this large and expensive vessel.

There is a choice of different entertaining areas on deck for all occasions.

Below the deck, you can choose from a range of interior layout options, with the standard layout offering four double cabins, all en-suite, plus separate crew quarters for complete privacy.

Large and fast, this boat does blur the boundaries between production boats and superyachts:

[Price for the base model: £4.5 million ex VAT]

Additional Information

All prices quoted are for the base models only.

While the base model of an Oyster Yacht includes touchscreen controls, automated in-mast furling, electric winches, a swim platform, and a B&G navigation as standard, there are many other additional optional extras.

These optional extras could cost you a few hundred thousand pounds more than the quoted base price. However, if you can afford one of these stunning blue water sailing yachts, the world is your Oyster.

Rupert Holmes gets the latest on the first new sub-50ft yacht launched by Oyster in many years, the Oyster 495.

The Oyster 495 is the first all-new sub 50ft Oyster model in 16 years and is one of the most important new models for the revitalised company since CEO Richard Hadida took the helm in 2018.

It follows the successful Oyster 565 that first hit the water two years ago, of which 17 have already been sold.

A huge effort has gone into developing the Oyster 495, including input from Oyster’s founder Richard Matthews, with the aim of refining the boat as much as possible, as well as making the best use of space.

It’s instantly recognisable as part of Oyster’s G6 family and retains a well-proportioned elegance – something that’s not easily achieved when scaling a concept down to a smaller size.

The 495’s styling includes many features which have already become a trademark of Oyster’s larger models, such as the flush foredeck, wrap-around deck saloon windows and triple seascape windows in the aft owner’s cabin — all sure to make the yacht stand out.

A hefty lightship displacement of 21 tonnes means the Oyster 495 will retain much of the big boat feel of its stablemates, even in heavy weather. Humphreys Yacht Design has drawn a powerful high stability hull, with maximum beam carried well aft, twin rudders and a characteristically long waterline.

It’s a shape that promises relaxed and comfortable passagemaking at high average speeds and low angles of heel, even upwind.

Oyster seems to recognise that for many owners ease of handling is a key reason for buying a smaller boat. The push-button sail handling systems from the larger models have therefore been retained. The electric mainsail furling is operated from the helm stations, while electric winches are standard, and the headsail furler can be upgraded to electric. A conventional fully-battened mainsail is offered as an option, as are bow and stern thrusters.

There’s more light in the galley and chart table areas than previous models thanks to the deck saloon windows having been extended further aft. The galley is in the traditional Oyster position, at the side of the centre cockpit, and offers plenty of worktop and stowage in a configuration that should suit use at sea.

Excellent owners’ cabins are also a key element of Oyster’s DNA and this is an area that has clearly been prioritised for this model. The broad stern sections that help give the boat form stability and sail carrying ability produce an immense amount of space. As a result, this part of the boat has a level of volume, comfort, stowage and style that’s rarely seen on a 50-footer.

Forward of the full-width saloon are a small Pullman-style cabin to starboard and a modest sized guest double forward. These share a heads compartment with a separate shower stall.

A high level of standard equipment includes Czone digital switching, allowing all lighting and equipment to be controlled from MFDs at both helm stations and the navigation station. There’s also internal and external mood lighting.

It’s clear that this will be a very different boat compared to existing sub-50ft Oysters – there have been enormous advances in yacht design and fit out during that time.

The Oyster 475 , launched in the mid-2010s was a great boat, even though it was a stretched version of the Oyster 46 that originally dates from 2005.

However, the Oyster 495 is demonstrably a very much larger vessel – waterline length and beam are 190cm and 35cm larger than those of the 475. Indeed they even exceed the measurements of the Oyster 545 . The payoff for the extra volume arguably comes in the comparatively high displacement and price.

Oyster is clearly betting heavily on strong demand after what Hadida describes as an “exceptional” year, particularly for the relatively new 565 and 595 models. The 495 will therefore be built at a newly-acquired dedicated facility at Hythe, where the Empress flying boats were once built on the banks of Southampton Water.

A number of orders have already been taken for the 495 and the first boat is scheduled to be afloat in 2022.
