One design surprise: L30

  • May 21st, 2023
  • Sailing Yacht

I must admit that I had a fairly long internal conversation with myself about how and if at all I could be writing about the L30 one design racer/cruiser. Why? Because mentioning the L30 is inevitably and immediately triggering a notice about her “father”, Rodion Luka. He is Ukrainian and that is the boat´s origin. Faster as you might think you are talking about the war, Russia, Ukraine and all that comes with it. I don´t want this. Not because I haven’t got an opinion about this topic (in fact I am a very political person), but because I am convinced that there are better places to talk politics than boats. I strongly believe that sports, sailing in particular, should be bringing people together, uniting them in their passion – not dividing them.

luka 30 sailboat

And so I was very happy witnessing during the last spring boat show at Lake Constance that on the very first day of the show the crew of the exhibited L30 one design boat decided not to politicize their boat (or to have their boat politicized by others) and refrained from flying the Ukrainian flag. There are truly other places and above all better suited occasions to argue and discuss. Seeing this, I felt much better going over to my exhibiting neighbours, boarding the boat, greeting Rodion and his mate. We were truly having a good time aboard, getting to know the guys behind it and – the reason for my visit – getting to know a bit the boat itself. So welcome to the L30 one design walkthrough.

Rodion Luka´s vision

Rodion Luka is a versatile and successful sailor. He is an Olympic silver medalist, second place in 2004 Olympics for his country Ukraine. He also raced for Team Russia in the Volvo Ocean Race of 2008/09 as helmsman and founded a sailing/yachting school in Kiev. Rodion started the L30 one design idea working together with Slovenian designer Andrej Justin. The idea was to come up with a powerful 30-feet racer-cruiser that would bring together high performance with cruising comforts and trailerable versatility.

luka 30 sailboat

And indeed, the boat looks sleek and fast, a small boat ticking a lot of boxes: Double wheel steering, lifting keel, racing fitting and trimming equipment combined with cruising amenities. I am invited and warmly welcomed by Rodion and Jochen Beetz, German importer of the L30 one design boat. 30 foot is a great size for a boat: Starting prices are reasonable, the boats are small enough to not cause much trouble and follow-up costs in maintenance and the handling of a 30-footer is easy. A great size for inshore and coastal use-cases and a perfect size for daysailing or main use as a weekender.

luka 30 sailboat

But the L30 wants to be more. This is clear just from the outset: Reading into the history of that boat, you will surely notice that World Sailing discussed using the L30 one design boat as their solo/double handed mixed offshore World Championships and the L30-class worldwide is very busy establishing a racing community with pros and amateurs providing attractive events. The boat is certainly aimed at sportive sailors willing to sail fast, constantly push for speed and fine tuning the sails.

luka 30 sailboat

In that, I felt at home: A bit like on my First 27 SE I instantly recognized the fine variety of trimming instruments on the L30 like 3D Jib inhaulers and a nice wide keyboard of jammers right on top at the entryway down. I would say the L30 is more suited for crewed racing, also taking into account her comparatively slim width of 2.54 meters with a hull length of 9.25 meters (compared to the First 27 SE (with a hull length of 7.99 meters and 2.54 width). Meaning a slim, light boat (she weighs in only 1.800 kilograms with a ballast of 790 kilograms at 1.88 meters draft.

A boat for regatta-cruising

In that, the L30 is perfect for a dedicated crew, being a family, a band of sailing brothers or corporate sailing. Many details on the boat I found interesting, such as the long bow sprit (of course carbon-made) used to attach the Code 0 or Gennaker light wind sails, which is not fixed by is retrievable. But the bowsprit, other than on the First 27 SE for example, won´t enter the hull´s interior but is running in a dedicated compartment underneath the deck, completely separated from the internal cabin. This is great to avoid leakage and water inside the boat.

luka 30 sailboat

The L30 one design is made with modern infusion technique and from what I could see the production quality easily meet the demands of demanding customers. The boat can be equipped with a standard Diesel engine or electric propulsion which both go on a two-blade folding propeller on a saildrive. Depending on the use-case and sailing area, both will have their pros and cons.

luka 30 sailboat

I really couldn´t spot any flaws, no excessive wear and tear (the boat exhibited was a used one as, like it is with the rest of the boating industry too, there are literally “no” new boats available) and no stupid things. Except for, maybe, the main jammers to both sides of the deck through which, for my taste, the lines ran so much angled that I would have placed the jammers turned inward to take on and let out the lines without that much friction. But that´s just a small detail.

luka 30 sailboat

I like the little nice and practical features which reminded me of the Seascapes, like the lifting rudders which can be taken out of their bearings with one hand. The boat, from the outside, makes a pretty nice impression, everything is where it is supposed to be. It looks racy and aggressive, the mast has a considerable rake. Looking at the numbers, the boat promises to be a good performer and as the website states, it has been tested thoroughly since 2015 with achieving 24.7 knots in a 34 knot breeze. Well …

Cruising amenities

The L30 one design is a racer/cruiser and judging by pictures on the internet enjoys an ever-growing fanbase of owners. But I would reckon that most owners aren´t that much focused on racing this boat. It´s maybe a nice mixture of having a race-ready and capable sailboat for regattas and cruising comforts for a couple, friends or a small family that loves to sail fast – just as I did with my GEKKO. And here the surprising part of the walkthrough begins: This boat is really something different.

luka 30 sailboat

At first, when I went down on the entryway, I noticed that for the interior the designers chose to skip the classic saloon. There simply is none. Going down one has the small galley to port side and enters directly into the head of the boat to starboard side. Two pilot berths left and right offer a place to sleep for one adult each. Leaving the galley behind and going forward, one enters the forepeak.

luka 30 sailboat

A small sofa to port side may be used to getting dressed and undressed or, in harbor or at anchor, sit down, reading a book talking to the boat´s chef acting in the galley. A large V-berth in forepeak is large enough to offer two adults a good night´s sleep. I loved the natural light that enters the fore cabin through two hull windows. As the bowsprit is outside the interior, this is a sealed of watertight place. Well done!

luka 30 sailboat

In the bow, to starboard side, one can sit on the berth and work the “navigation station”, which is integrated into the bulkhead of the bathroom. I like the feeling of the boat: The cushions in soft grey are comfortable and the garment appears of a high quality. The EVA-foam flooring , same as in the cockpit, make for a nice, at-home atmosphere and I am sure that the owners can choose from a variety of colors and tones.

Comforts and fitting varieties

In this I am really enthused and excited, because the L30 one design appears to be a “sheep in a wolf´s clothing”, exactly the other way round. The aggressive racer from the outside turns out to be a pretty cozy and lovely designed cruising-capable boat. At first it is a bit strange to have a boat without a dedicated saloon (and indeed, in cold, rainy or generally bad weather you cannot sit together and enjoy a hot meal), but other than that and acknowledging the fact that 90 per cent of the boat life is taking place in the cockpit, this is a pretty nice layout!

luka 30 sailboat

Especially the large hull windows make for a nicely light-suffused interior. Of all the 30 feet racer/cruisers and cruiser/racers I have visited I´d say that the L30 one design has the friendliest of them all. The boat´s “narrow” 2.54 meters in beam are in a way a pro: There is always and at any point a grab handle, a bulkhead or a fitting near to have a safe stand and roam about inside the boat even in heavy weather.

luka 30 sailboat

Sacrificing the saloon for a second aft pilot berth and placing the head/WC right at the mast stand is also ingenious: Since the L30 is a boat for crewed racing, that´s one additional berth and no need for hot bunking. Also, at sea, especially in rough conditions, having the WC on to of the keel – the pivot of the boat – is a great thing. We all know the unpleasant rollercoaster up there in the bow or abaft when using the toilet. I suppose it´s much calmer right on top of the keel.

Variable draft on the L30

Another nice feature to talk about in the L30 one design is the lifting keel. Not a swing keel like on my First 27 SE and not a fixed keel: This makes the L30 far more attractive for sailors than the Figaro 3 or the Dehler 30 OD which cannot be self-transported by means of a trailer . Let´s take a closer look onto the lifting keel mechanism in the L30, because I found it was easy, simple and therefore great.

luka 30 sailboat

As the keel is a lead bulb on a stainless steel frame, that is encapsulated by an epoxy moulded fin, the lifting of the keel from 1.88 meters max to 0.58 meters retracted is done vertically (no swing mechanism) inside a housing. This housing is, of course, on the longitudinal axis of the boat and makes the “wall” of the bathroom to port side. When inside the bathroom, one notices a large watertight hatch, behind it, as Rodion shows me, is the lifting mechanism.

luka 30 sailboat

The mechanism consists of a simple Dyneema-lashing on a pulley tackle. The keel does not need a crank system, like on the First 24 SE nor a hydraulic system like on my last boat, the First 27 SE – it is just simply pulling it up or letting it down by gravity. The halyard that will take the keel up leaves the keel housing right on to – emerging outside of the boat on the coach roof.

luka 30 sailboat

There, a large roller diverts the line back where, when needed, this line is put on a winch and can be winched up with ease. No motor needed. I found this idea astonishingly simply and ingenious. Everything is done by a hoist and a simple line. I can imagine that this is a pretty maintenance-free and failsafe system.

A very nice boat indeed!

So, all in all I was very surprised by the great quality of the boat, the high rate of cruising comforts down below deck and the overall impression this boat made on me. She is indeed a very nice boat! I personally would have preferred a tiller steering instead of wheels, apart from the more complex mechanical setup to convert steering wheel-helm impulses to the rudder blades, especially in racing the helmsman needs to feel the flow of the water. And this is usually killed off and sedated by wheels. Also, due to the relative narrowness of the boat, those two wheels look a bit awkward – to me.

luka 30 sailboat

Other than that, I really liked the boat. For people seeking sailing sensations and wanting to combine the thrills of an occasional regatta with the amenities of a cruising boat, the L30 should definitely be on the short list. A big plus is the trailerability and the lifting keel. I would say, all-out racers will have more performant and more race-oriented boats in the Dehler 30 OD , the Figaro 3 , or Hans Genthe´s Aeolos P 30 , also in the upcoming new SunFast , which we all await eagerly.

luka 30 sailboat

First built by Oceantec in Slovenia , L30s are now built near Lwiw in Ukraine (as Rodion told me production resumes despite the ongoing war) and they are setting up another production facility at the beautiful Balaton Lake in Hungary. Which, I guess, will secure the production and shouldn´t be a factor that prohibits sales of this boat. I thanked Rodion for the tour of his interesting sailboat and I hope, maybe this year, when I return to the Lake of Constance, Jochen Beetz, German importer, will take me out for a little show-run on one of his new L30s for a seatrial. I will surely report on that event!

L30 One-Design

L30 one design

The L30 One-design is the brainchild of Rodion Luka, a veteran sailors who has competed in everything from the Olympics to the Volvo Ocean Race.

The design concept was for a fast, modern and inexpensive trailerable yacht with minimum maintenance costs, a spacious cabin and head, good for racing, team building, training and cruising.

“I was always wondering why golf is more popular than sailing,” said Luka. “I was looking for a way to make yachting just as affordable as other mass sport disciplines. This boat is created for a new type of yacht club, one that can operate as fitness club. The business model operates along the lines of successful Kiev Racing Yacht Club.”

State-of-the-art technology, materials and equipment are used in the L30. The users will enjoy its carbon fiber spars, twin steering wheels and inboard electric sail-drive.

L30 one design

This is a boat that will satisfy a very broad range of requirements. Racing teams will appreciate the L30’s speed and dynamic handling combined with a wide range of adjustments, as well as its one design concept. Self-sufficiency, comfort and accommodation are perfect for a small family or a racing crew. Being able to be ramp launched, owners can haul their boats and store them in their back yards or they can keep the boat in a slip. All options are available.

The L30’s designer Andrej Justin said, “The boat is not designed exclusively for racing, but has to perform as a throughbreed and at the same time be also forgiving. She has to fulfill all the fleet and match racing demands on hardware specifications and deck layout and has to be the perfect tool for corporate daysailing and offer cruising comfort for a small crew.

Sailboat Review: The Ukrainian-built, Versatile L30

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • March 14, 2023

Right side of the L30 sailboat

Amid the fleet of 17 new sailboats being introduced to North American sailors at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, the Ukrainian-built L30—a dual-purpose racer/pocket cruiser—stood out for a variety of reasons.

First of all, at 31 feet, 5 inches length overall, it was the smallest boat that Cruising World ’s Boat of the Year team inspected . It was the least expensive too, with a base price of $160,000, well below the cost of other vessels in its size range.

And then there was the fact that it was the only boat that the judges were unable to assess with our usual in-water, dockside inspection. Instead, we trudged past tents and across asphalt, and climbed a short flight of stairs to board the boat, which was sitting high and dry on its trailer, parked alongside the show’s perimeter fence. That’s where we met the L30’s importer and chief cheerleader, Alexander Ivanov, an energized Ukrainian sailor, who now hails from the Pacific Northwest but travels the country, regatta by regatta and boat show by boat show, to help build the L30 Class one-design racing fleet and promote the boat’s attributes as a sail-training vessel and family cruiser.

Several days later, we met Ivanov again, this time aboard the L30 out on the water, where we had a southwest breeze in the 10-to-15-knot range. As soon as we’d finished our motoring drills, we hoisted sails. Ivanov moved quickly from winch to winch and line clutch to line clutch, demonstrating the many micro adjustments that could be made by tweaking a multicolor array of sail-control lines.

Hard on the breeze, the L30 stood up to its canvas well and bounded through the chop. With a displacement-length ratio of just 76 (the lowest of the new-boat fleet) and a sail-area-displacement ratio of 32.2 (the largest), there was plenty of horsepower to play with. And, thanks to relatively high sides, the ride was for the most part dry as we cruised along at 7 knots or better.

Later, with the retractable bowsprit extended and the code zero filled—nearly doubling the sail area—well, let’s just say the experience was downright sporty.

The concept behind the L30 was developed by a fellow Ukrainian, Olympic silver medalist and 49er Class World Champion Rodion Luka, who worked with designer Andrej Justin to come up with a relatively affordable keelboat with a design brief that includes offshore performance, trailerability, and ease of use. First launched several years ago in Europe, the L30 is relatively new to North America. Last year, Luka and Ivanov promoted both the boat and the L30 Class at several of the Helly Hansen- Sailing World Regattas organized by CW ’s sister publication . Boats were towed from venue to venue and were available for charter, letting US sailors trade tacks and jibes with a handful of L30 Class European teams. Plans are to be at regattas again this year as the class expands. Incredibly, boats continue to be built in Ukraine and exported, despite the ongoing war with Russia. The design is also licensed to the Code Yachts shipyard in Hungary.

The L30 is a relatively narrow boat by today’s standards. Its beam of 8 feet, 4 inches allows it to be towed over the highway on a trailer or shipped via a container.

As you might expect with a sporty daysailer, the cockpit is large and open, providing room for a crew of four or five to work, though the boat is also intended for singlehanded and doublehanded events. Twin wheels are located well aft, near the open transom. The boat sports dual rudders, each mounted in a cassette on the stern. The cockpit has no seats, so underway, one sits on the sole or side deck using  removable soft seats.

In race mode, the L30 is rigged with a square-top main and armed with running backstays for when the breeze is on. It carries a quiver of jibs to match upwind conditions, plus the aforementioned large, powerful code zero for reaching and running. In cruising mode, running backstays can be fixed along the mast. As I said, sail-control lines are abundant. But for cruising or sail-training purposes, sheets and sheet leads can be simplified, the main can be reefed, and the working jib is flown on a roller furler, so it can be easily set and doused.

The boat we saw in Annapolis had a carbon-fiber mast and boom. The mast is stepped on the cabin top using a tabernacle. We did not see it being set up, but we were told that the boat can be rigged and ready to launch in a couple of hours. Once in the water, the 6-foot-2-inch lifting keel is raised and lowered with a winch on the cabin top. With the foil up, the boat draws just under 2 feet, and it can be launched by crane or on a ramp.

Below, the L30 sports a minimalist and workable interior. Looking through the companionway, one peers directly into a head compartment, offset to starboard. A pair of bunks stretches aft under the cockpit, with a sink and counter amidships to port. There was no stove on the boat we sailed, but it would be easy to add a small cooktop. Forward of the head and sink, space opens up to a pleasant V-berth and sitting area.

The base price of $160,000 doesn’t include sails or a trailer. The boat in Annapolis, fitted out with rod rigging, nke electronics, Antal winches and a full suite of UK sails, had a sticker price of $210,000, still less than any of the competitors.

The L30’s hull and deck are infused using vinylester resin and cored with foam. The boat we saw in Annapolis was powered by a 15 hp Yanmar diesel. A 6 kW Oceanvolt electric motor and saildrive are an option.

Given its size and accommodations, the L30 won’t be for everyone. But for sailors who have a yen to race, the L30 should prove competitive. When the racing’s over (or for a daysail), the crew can kick back and sleep aboard, if they choose. There’s also something to be said for a boat that can extend its range via a trailer, be hauled out quickly if a storm’s pending, and be stored in the yard in the offseason. But those reasons aside, what got me was this fact: The L30 was fun to sail.

L30, a one-design ocean racing boat from Ukraine

luka 30 sailboat

We visited the L30, and discovered an interesting boat with atypical characteristics. The L30 is a small one-design that benefits from an international ocean racing championship. The lifting keel and minimalist layout also make it possible to envisage small cruises.

Charly Fernbach

The L30 concept

The L30 was developed by Rodion Luka, Olympic medallist (2004), world champion (2005) in the 49er class and participant in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009. He joined Andrej Justin, designer of the RC44 to build the L30 in Ukraine. The one-design highlights the qualities of the sailors on an identical support and the objective of the L30 is to offer an international ocean racing circuit.

The L30 is a light boat, easy to use with a playful small crew . But the designers also wanted to offer a versatile boat with a layout adapted to small family cruises.

However, the L30 is not a great novelty, as the boat is due out in 2015. Until then absent in France, his selection as official support for the championship organised by World Sailing (International Sailing Federation), gives him a real spotlight . It is even questionable whether this boat will be selected for the 2024 Olympics, and the answer will be in 2023.

In 2019, this boat was presented in Cannes as well as at the Paris boat show for the first time. That's when we visited it. We discovered a boat with atypical characteristics, but interesting.

Why so narrow?

To be transportable on a trailer or in containers the L30, which is 9.54m long, is only 2.54m wide. This remarkable narrowness also corresponds to a philosophy that gives more importance to ballast stability than shape stability .

luka 30 sailboat

In comparison an L30 is 1.16m narrower than the Pogo30, the most extreme of the 30' performance category. This narrowness also allows for a certain lightness. Its reasonable weight of 1.8t (light) makes transportation realistic if you have a pickup truck or a big, heavy sedan.

A lifting keel

For transport and cruising versatility, the "T" keel can be raised. It is a simple vertical lifting system with a hoist. But be careful in case of impact, no pivoting to limit structural damage ... The rudders can also be raised vertically.

The cockpit

This one is particularly long for use with a small crew . At the stern, one will not fail to notice with astonishment the two steering wheels, which may seem a little "too much" for a 30' regatta boat.

Indeed, associated with the long cockpit, it corresponds more to a crew philosophy than to the imperatives of solo or double-handed sailing. It is perhaps also a nod from Rodion Luka to the Volvo Ocean Race boats, which are 20m long and 5.60m wide.

The sheeting winches are close to the steering wheels, unfortunately they are not really usable by the helmsman .

luka 30 sailboat

Going through the huge cockpit towards the roof you reach the piano where most of the manoeuvres and adjustments are made.

The gangways are necessarily tight on such a narrow sailboat . Passing between the carbon mast, and the Rod shrouds, we arrive on the small foredeck which integrates the bowsprit .

The telescopic carbon spars is embedded in a recess in the deck, unfortunately a cover glued to the deck does not allow access to the mechanism. It should nevertheless be noted that the diameter 6 outlet end of the halyard leads to fears of elasticity and loss of halyard stiffness when using the gennaker.

luka 30 sailboat

Interior design

The L30 is surprising, as you enter through the downhill, you can see a real effort of development that makes this monotype quite versatile. Of course, space is limited in this narrow sailboat , but 4 people will be able to make a small cruise.

The vertical keel well is facing the companionway, on its starboard side, bulkheads provide a bathroom area. On board, the movements are to the port side of the keel .

The electric panel placed at the fall of the companionway, it is quite exposed to the water splashes that will pass through the companionway and to the shocks during the ramming from one side to the other. The saloon and the kitchen are small, but have the minimum necessary for 4 people.

Under the cockpit benches, there are two coffin berths that will be used for racing matossage. At the front, a rather narrow Breton bed still allows two people to sleep.

Provisional L30 pre-test report

The L30 promises good performance, offshore capabilities, easy logistics, and strict one-design, all for a price, ready to race, of less than 200,000 euros including tax. By way of comparison, in the 30' one-design offshore racing category, a Figaro3 will cost twice as much and a Dehler 30OD 50% more. We hope to be able to try this boat out soon.

There are still few L30s in France, as the market is already well occupied by many offshore regatta yachts . However, the reasonable price may be able to attract racers with limited financial resources and create a truly international and sporty offshore racing championship.

The L30 combines good all-round offshore performance, easy manoeuvrability, and strict One Design, while being affordable & comfortable with families in mind.

Developed perfectly in all details:

  • Equipped with Trim Tab for more performance sailing upwind, and to facilitate downwind sailing in strong breeze;
  • The hull, deck and internal structures are built in vinylester resin and glass in vacuum bagged infusion technology and sandwich construction with PVC foam; and
  • The L30 has a lifting keel with lead bulb and two lifting rudder blades with a custom steering system and two steering zones.

The speed record of 24.7 knots was achieved in rough sea conditions and 34 knots true wind speed and the L30 performs exceptionally well in light wind as well - showing 2.8 knots boat speed in 1.9 knots true wind speed.

While performance is at the forefront, the L30 has the comfort of a cruising vessel. There are two sleeping births, galley kitchen, a spacious head on the star board with marine toilet, sink and shower, settee as well as stowage lockers on both sides of the saloon.

The L30 has no no need for crane lifting. The double-axle self-propelled transport trailer (custom-designed for this boat) has an independent power system with hydraulic drive of the wheels. It allows for easy movement of the boat at splashing or storage locations.

The L30 boat concept was developed by Rodion Luka who has 35 years of experience in One Design racing. His long line of experience includes Olympic medalist (2004), Worlds Champion (2005) in 49er Class and Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009 participant.

Rodin collaborated with Andrej Justin, designer of RC44 to make this outstanding boat. The L30 has been tested since November 2015, and Sydney Marine Brokerage are proud to be the exclusive Australian distributors.

Luka 30 – L30 One Design
