Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

An unfinished mega yacht belonging to the world’s second-richest man has made its way out of the shipbuilding yard in the Netherlands after being the target of threats. Here’s why the ship was moved and where it went.

What Happened: An unfinished $500 million yacht being built for Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN ) founder Jeff Bezos has been towed away from the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam.

Benzinga previously reported the superyacht was stuck in a Dutch city after it was revealed it wouldn’t be able to fit through a passageway after being built due to being too large. A historic bridge was going to be dismantled to help the ship get through.

The New York Post is reporting the yacht was relocated to the Oceanco shipyard in Greenport, located 24 miles away.

The superyacht is 417 feet long and has the name “Y721” currently.

The YouTube channel Dutch Yachting has video of the vessel being towed, which can be viewed below. Yacht enthusiast Hanco Bol who owns the channel wrote of the towing.

“We never saw a transport going that fast,” Bol said. “It took less than three hours for the ship to travel southwest along the Noord canal even though it normally requires nearly twice as much time to traverse the route.”

Bol said Oceanco, the company making the yacht, could have chosen to make the quick move due to the publicity surrounding the big name of Bezos.

Why It’s Important: Bezos' superyacht became the subject of criticism from local residents as the city agreed to temporarily dismantle the historic Koningshaven Bridge, also known as “De Hef.”

The bridge decision led to threats from locals that they would throw eggs at the yacht if the landmark bridge was dismantled.

“De Hef” is over 150 years old and has a 130-foot clearance. The bridge was refurbished in 2017 and has gained landmark status and serves as a national monument after being bombed during World War II.

Oceanco withdrew the request for the city council to temporarily dismantle the bridge after the public push back.

Coincidentally, the towing of the superyacht avoided going underneath “De Hef,” even though it would have saved time, Bol said.

“I think that was intentional,” Bol said.

The unfinished superyacht is set to be one of the biggest in the world and will be owned by Bezos, the world’s second-richest man with a wealth of $165 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

If Amazon founder Jeff Bezos decided to splash $1 million-a-day it would take him a shockingly long time to run out of cash.

As most of us clutch to a few pennies, willing on payday to come around quicker, Jeff Bezos is certainly having no issues with running out of cash anytime soon - and wouldn't be even if he was splashing $1 million every single month.

As of today (25 July), the founder and chairman of Amazon has an estimated net worth of a whopping $198.6 billion, according to Forbes.

While the rest of us struggle along amid a cost of living crisis contemplating whether to spend an extra $5 to treat ourselves to a coffee one day, Bezos has the funds to be able to splash not just an extra $5 but an eye-watering $1 million per day if he really wanted to.

And if Bezos hypothetical spent $1 million every day?

Well, you would think even one of the richest people in the world would surely run out of money fairly quickly given what a large sum that is to splash in 24 hours.

However, when you break it down - or rather when we save you the time and break it down for you - you'll realise Bezos would, depressingly for the rest of us, last a lot longer than you can begin to imagine.

If Bezos did decide to start doling out $1 million every single day, it would still take him around 544 years to run out of money.

And to think it only takes most of us a month to run out of the measly-by-comparison salary we all get paid.

However, rather than splashing six-figures a day, Bezo's net worth is used elsewhere, the business magnate said to have a $570 million property portfolio.

He revealed last year that he's relocating to Miami from Seattle to be closer to his parents.

Bezos announced the news of his move on social media shortly after purchasing a $79 million mansion on Indian Creek Island.

The 19,064 square feet property boasts seven bedrooms and 14 bathrooms.

Bezos is also quite fond of super yachts and owns a one-of-a-kind $500 million vessel.

The boat is so big that it doesn't fit into your typical yacht docks, and has to be docked next to 600-foot oil tankers.

Jeff Bezos’  $500 billion superyacht was making headling all summer and became a special place for Bezos and his fiance, Lauren Sanchez, . The colossal 417-foot Y721 sailing yacht, named the Koru, is known as the largest sailing yacht worldwide. The vessel features a spacious pool on its deck, accommodations for up to 18 guests and 40 crew members, and draws inspiration from Māori art, symbolizing strength, new life, and peace, per Ritzy Charters.

While Bezos hold the title for the biggest yacht, a recent analysis, conducted by Yacht Charter experts Ritzy Charters, found that billionaire media magnate  David Geffen is the owner of the most extravagant celebrity yacht, reportedly valued at $590 million. Named The Rising Sun, previously owned by  Larry Ellison before Geffen acquired it in 2010, it boasts a length of 138 meters houses an impressive 82 rooms, and can comfortably accommodate 18 guests and 55 crew members, complete with a basketball court, wine cellar, and a lavish cinema.

Lauren Sánchez ’s engagement ring from billionaire Jeff Bezos is some serious bling.

The former TV anchor and Amazon founder confirmed their romance in January 2019. After over four years of dating, Bezos popped the question to Sánchez in May 2023 while the pair were on vacation in the South of France. Sánchez’s engagement ring features a large cushion-cut diamond set on a platinum band.

After news broke of the proposal, a source told PEOPLE that Sánchez was “on cloud nine” about being engaged to Bezos . “No one has ever seen her happier,” the source said. “She is elated to be engaged to Jeff. He is her prince.”

Speaking with Vogue in November 2023, Sánchez shared that while the pair’s wedding plans were still undecided, she “one hundred percent” intends to take Bezos’ last name . As for becoming the wife of a billionaire, the media personality said that she is prepared for the responsibility.

“I think there are a lot of opportunities that come with that, and I take those opportunities very seriously,” she said. “We always look at each other and go, ‘We’re the team.’ So everything’s shared.”

Sánchez’s cushion-cut diamond ring is 30 carats

Sánchez’s engagement ring is anything but ordinary. The massive sparkler features a cushion-cut diamond — estimated to be about 30 carats — set on a four-prong platinum mounting. While the rock initially appeared to be a classic white diamond, Sánchez confirmed to Vogue in November 2023 that her ring actually includes a more unique pink diamond. 

The ring is estimated to cost between $3 and $5 million

With such a large center stone, it’s no surprise that Sánchez’s engagement ring has a high price tag. Jeweler and expert Briony Raymond told PEOPLE that due to the sparkler’s high color grade and clarity, it is estimated “to be anywhere from $3 million to upwards of $5 million depending on the exact specifications of the diamond."

Bezos proposed to Sánchez in France

Bezos proposed to Sánchez in May 2023. The pair were on vacation together in the South of France when the billionaire popped the question. Sánchez was photographed rocking her new accessory as she spent time with her new fiancé on his $500 million yacht named Koru.

Speaking with Vogue in November 2023, Sánchez said she and Bezos had enjoyed a starlit dinner before the proposal. At bedtime, she discovered the former CEO of Amazon had hidden an engagement ring underneath her pillow.

“When he opened the box, I think I blacked out a bit,” Sánchez told the outlet.

As for wedding planning, Sánchez told Vogue that the pair were still enjoying their engagement and had yet to make any decisions.

“We’re still thinking about the wedding, what it’s going to be,” she said. “Is it going to be big? Is it going to be overseas? We don’t know yet. We’ve only been engaged five months!”

However, the former TV anchor did have some ideas about her wedding dress, naming designers like Christian Dior and Valentino as some of her favorites.

Sánchez and Bezos had two engagement parties

Sánchez and Bezos celebrated their impending nuptials with two celebrations. Two months after the businessman got down on one knee, the couple hosted an engagement party on Bezos’ yacht on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The star-studded guest list included Bill Gates , Paula Hurd , Kris Jenner , STAUD founder Sarah Staudinger and Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd.

In November 2023, the pair had another lavish soirée to celebrate their engagement in Los Angeles. Bezos and Sánchez’s bash included a performance by Jewel and a touching speech by the groom-to-be. According to Vogue , guests included Oprah Winfrey , Salma Hayek Pinault , Barbra Streisand , Miranda Kerr , Suki Waterhouse , Robert Pattison and more.

Jeff bezos to sell another $5 billion in amazon shares: how could he spend it.

Whenever the billionaire founder of a company sells off some shares, eyebrows are raised. What could it mean? Is it a sign of trouble? SEC filings recently revealed that Jeff Bezos, the former CEO and current executive chair on the board of directors at Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN ), plans to sell 25 million shares worth approximately $5 billion. Investors may wonder if that’s a bad sign, and Bezos watchers may be curious about where the money might go next.

The good news for investors is that Bezos isn’t jumping out of Amazon. These 25 million shares represent just a tiny part of his stake in the company, which is around one billion shares. That works out to around $220 billion. Bezos might just be taking advantage of an opportunity. Amazon stock was down in 2023 and has spent much of the spring and summer on a steady upward climb, hitting a 52-week high recently. Why not celebrate by taking a little off the top? And with another successful Prime Day event under Amazon’s belt, it seems like a good time to sell a little with the confidence that the rest will keep going up. Where might Jeff Bezos put $5 billion to good use?

Let's Get Spending

Bezos may have earned his billions through Amazon, but he’s not shy about spending them elsewhere. Aside from yachts, travel, and luxury goods, there are two main areas where we have seen Bezos devote a lot of money: real estate and investing.

He could always buy more real estate. He has spent $237 million on three properties on Indian Creek Island, the elite Florida area known as the Billionaire Bunker. Bezos and his fiancee, Lauren Sanchez, have decided to make the Miami area their home base. For a billionaire, no property is perfect. Like his neighbor Tom Brady, Bezos plans to make major renovations, tearing down two of the mansions he owns on the island and living in the third while he plans what is likely to be another incredible home.

He still owns his custom-built home on Lake Washington in Seattle and several other properties in the Washington area. And he enjoys the other Washington as well. When he bought the Washington Post, he picked up two homes in the Kalorama neighborhood, including a former textile museum, which he is completely remodeling. His New York City holdings include multiple prime Fifth Avenue building floors. No tech billionaire is caught without a Hawaii hideaway, and Bezos has one of those, too, a pristine estate in Maui. What's missing? A pied-à-terre in Paris, perhaps? A ski home in Jackson Hole, WY? The possibilities, like Bezos's wallet, are nearly endless.

He could and probably will invest again. Bezos doesn't just bet on himself and Amazon. He has made dozens of investments through his Bezos Expeditions investment firm, including the Washington Post and his space exploration company, Blue Origin. One of the reasons Bezos stepped down from his CEO role at Amazon was to spend more time at Blue Origin. That move paid off and accelerated the company's growth even as Bezos battled with space rival Elon Musk. Blue Origin recently filed a complaint to curb the number of rockets that SpaceX can launch from Cape Canaveral.

Bezos doesn't have to own a company to invest in it. Bezos Expeditions has strategically invested in now-public companies like Airbnb (NASDAQ: ABNB ) and Uber (NYSE: UBER ). He is also an active venture capitalist supporting various private companies from Arrived to Wildtype. We can only imagine how many pitch decks and presentations he receives regularly, but his existing investments show he has many interests beyond space travel.

Should You Sell, Too?

Selling a stock is always a personal decision. If you need the money or spot a more compelling investment, this isn't a bad time to sell Amazon, especially if you have held it for a while and are ready to put those gains elsewhere. However, you should remember that, like Bezos, you may be subject to some capital gains taxes.

An argument could also be made that this isn't a great time to sell Amazon because it may continue to go up from here. With a thriving e-commerce empire, the power of the AWS cloud business, and Amazon's forays into generative AI, it could be argued that Amazon is just getting started. Analysts agree. According to Benzinga data, Amazon is a buy with a consensus price target of $216.7 based on the ratings of 40 analysts. Recently, Wolfe Research initiated coverage with an Outperform rating.

While Amazon's next earnings results on August 1 won't give us insights into how well the latest Prime Day event did, it will provide key updates on the growth of the cloud and e-commerce businesses and other segments, including media and advertising. In Amazon's shareholder letter earlier this year, CEO Andy Jassy laid out the opportunities for Amazon, noting that even as Amazon has created a $500 billion consumer business, about 80% of the worldwide retail market segment still resides in physical stores. He also sees a massive advantage in cloud migration, growing media and advertising, and generative AI, which he said “may be the largest technology transformation since the cloud (which itself is still in the early stages), and perhaps since the Internet.” No stock is a sure thing, but those are some reasons that Amazon may be a hold for more than just Jeff Bezos.

South Florida, meet The Koru.

That’s the name of Jeff Bezos’ colossal yacht that just dropped anchor in Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The word means “new beginnings” in Maori, the language spoken by indigenous Polynesians of mainland New Zealand, where the Amazon founder’s private jet was spotted in 2020.

How ginormous is this triple-masted behemoth? Roughly 400 feet long and 250 feet tall, it’s the size of a cruise ship. That ginormous.

The luxury schooner is so big it can’t even hang with other leisure ships; she reportedly is parked near two oil tankers. It has two pools, a hot tub, multiple lounges, dining areas and bars, and perhaps the pièce de résistance , a wooden figurehead on the prow rumored to be modeled after Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sanchez .

The 59-year-old billionaire shelled out about $500M for his snazzy new toy, which was built just for him in the Netherlands by Oceanco, the company that also constructed Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ superyacht, the Bravo Eugenia .

Get used to seeing The Koru around, especially if you set sail on a vacation. Bezos, a Palmetto High alum, lives back here full time now, after spending three decades in Seattle, busy reinventing the way the world shops.

On Monday, Jeff Bezos' new fiancée, Lauren Sanchez , posted a picture of her soon-to-be husband ascending the ladder of his new, $500 million megayacht . (It's possibly parked off the coast of Italy in the Tyrrhenian Sea based on a reverse image search of Sanchez's Instagram story, though that's not confirmed.) 

"Is it just me, or is it hot outside? ☀️❤️☀️" Sanchez wrote in the caption of the picture.

Bezos, who is wearing a pair of palm-tree printed swimming trunks, shows off super-toned abs, courtesy of his recent glow-up . 

Bezos wasn't always this fit. Back in 1994, when he founded Amazon, Bezos was on the lean, if not "scrawny" side .

Yet thanks to the workouts he's been doing with celebrity personal trainer Wes Okerson — whom Sanchez claims he "stole" from her — a diet that doesn't consist of biscuits for breakfast, and a good night of rest, Bezos is now pretty buff.

And now it looks like the two might soon be up against each other in a cage fight . Right in line with muscular tech bro summer, Musk was even touting his martial arts prowess in preparation for the fight — though the picture he posted wasn't shirtless.

"Really fun!" Musk tweeted at the the time earlier this month. "The obvious conclusion is that I need a *lot* more training."

So yet another billionaire could be gracing us with a shirtless pic soon enough.
