The CSY 44 evolved from a desire to build a better charter boat, hard to break, easy to care for, more livable at anchor and more responsive under sail. The result didn’t look anything like the thoroughbreds dominating Antigua Race Week today. Instead, a retro look, starting with the clipper bow and molded-in trailboards, caused many to assume that this might be just another full-keel anachronism dependent on the enhanced trade winds of the Caribbean for any measure of sailing ability. Charterers and new-boat owners were pleasantly surprised.

The CSY 44 turned out to be a ruggedly built mid-cockpit cutter also available in a pilothouse version. The hefty lay-up schedule, moderate sail area and full sections made it as appealing to cruising traditionalists as it was to the charter fleet. Her bulletproof rub rail and a keel and ballast arrangement designed to handle a grounding piqued the interest of many cruisers. The fact that the vessel could be purchased in kit form or as a ready-to-cruise package further widened its appeal.

The CSY 44’s clipper bow, raised deck aft and relatively high freeboard do give her a distinctive look. The smooth curve of the cove band and boot stripe work together to offset the freeboard astern and thus lower the profile of this big, broad-transomed boat. Making a boat spacious below results in some extra windage and water-dragging girth, but in this case the end justifies the means, especially if you want to stow a lot of gear.

On one hand, the designers set out to create a big boat with lots of room below, plenty of waterline length and a good amount of volume for tankage, storage and headroom. On the other hand, tank testing helped make the hull form as efficient as possible. The underbody, characterized by a cut-away forefoot, longish keel and skeg-hung rudder, affords plenty of directional stability and performs reasonably well under sail on and off the wind.

The boat comes in either a shoal- (4’ draft) or deep-keel (6’ draft) version. Long-distance passage makers would probably be better off with the deep-draft version, because the shoal option is virtually the same, with the bottom two feet and 2,000 pounds of ballast keel lopped off, reducing significantly the vesselÕs ultimate righting moment. The shoal-draft model, however, would be a great coastal passage maker, particularly adapted to the Bahamas, Florida Keys and ICW.

The no-nonsense single-spreader cutter rig is well supported by 1×19 wire attached to formidable chain plates. The main is less than 400 square feet and is easy to reef; its long foot makes it a strong driver on and off the wind. The overlapping jib topsail can be roller furled and tips in at just under 500 square feet. It is a high-cut sail, providing good visibility to leeward yet substantial power. Typical of all traditional cutters, the unsung hero of this sailplan is the 200-square-foot inner forestaysail flown from a self-tending club-foot boom.

The Standard Perkins 4-154 has proven a reliable power plant for the prop and a big alternator and/or refrigerator compressor. Capacities of 400 gallons for water and 100 gallons for fuel were an intelligent balance for tropical tradewind cruising where the breeze is constant and water difficult to come by.

Interesting factory options included less water tankage and the addition of an Onan diesel generator, watermaker and air conditioner. Twenty-year-old boats equipped with these original components should be surveyed carefully in order to discern if there is any life left in them, if they have been upgraded, and if not, how costly it would be to do so. Gear such as solid bronze ports, a Paul Luke stove, a tinned wire harness and Edson rack-and-pinion steering are indicators of a boat that’s built to last.

Anybody looking for a rugged, well built, comfortable cruising boat, one decidedly worth renovating, should take a close look at the CSY 44. Hulls that have been ridden hard and put away wet in the charter trade are bargain priced at around $80,000 – $95,000, and they represent a good buy for the handy do-it-yourselfer. A pampered, professionally maintained version that is well equipped and pretty much ready to go, may be priced around $95,000 – $110,000.

The CSY 44' Walkover has long been regarded as an excellent offshore and coastal cruiser. Solidly built, it has an interior layout that provides effective use of space, storage and privacy.

The full keel, cutter rig, center cockpit design brings stability, ease of sail handling and cruising performance and comfort.

This CSY 44' is in superior condition, having been maintained and updated by the past two private owners. She was last purchased in 2002 and has given this owner years of sailing pleasure on the west coast of Florida, the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.

The CSY 44 Walkover features the separate owner's cabin aft down from the center cockpit. The spacious V-style double with filler provides an excellent berth on a memory foam mattress. Six opening ports and an overhead hatch give great ventilation and light. Three drawers and a bulkhead mounted storage cabinet and hanging locker mean there is plenty of storage.

The ensuite head has a sink, storage and a new Jabsco electric flush head installed in 2013. The area is plumbed for a shower head to be installed.

Included in the aft cabin is a substantial nav station with storage below and instruments mounted above.

The main salon has an L shaped settee to port  and a double drop leaf table centerline. The starboard settee pulls out to make a double berth. The backrest swings up to make a single berth above. Storage compartments are above settees to port and starboard and a four drawer set provides additional storage. Six opening ports and two overhead hatches provide light and ventilation. At the forward end ofthe port settee there is afour drawer storage unit and a hanging locker.

The galley is aft of the salon area and includes a huge refrigerated unit to starboard with two refrigerated sections and one freezer section. To port are the sink, stove and plenty of counterspace and storage.

The forward head is to port with two access doors and a separate shower area.

The forward cabin has a large V-berth with filler, four opening ports and overhead hatch. A door opens directly to the forward head.

The boat was brought to the yard under its own sails and power. The owner states that the Yanmar engine operates as expected and the sails have some life remaining. The hull appears to be solid. It needs to be sanded, prepped, and repainted. There is some damage to the fiberglass ridge where the rub rail is located in a couple of places. The rub rail probably needs to be replaced. The standing rigging, sheets, and lines are weather worn and should need to be replaced. All of the woodwork on the boat needs to be refinished, including both hatch doors. The interior is in fair condition. Cushions and upholstery probably need to be replaced. There are no obvious leaks and the interior is dry. The engine, wiring, and tubing all look to be in good condition. The condition of the operating systems is unknown and should be inspected. It may be possible to run the Yanmar engine while in the boatyard but most of the systems probably can not be checked out while on the hard. Stock #301722 Strong build, long waterline, and fin keel make it perfect for island cruising. The CSY 44 is regarded as one of the finest sailboats ever made! This is the classic CSY 44 Pilot House Ketch. prized for its solid construction, spacious interior, relatively shallow shoal draft, and smooth easy sailing you only get with a ketch, this yacht is ideal for extended cruising to the islands. According to SailBoatData this yacht has a Comfort Ratio of 48.30!. In an April 2019 survey conducted by Cruising World, the CSY 44 was voted as #11 of the top 40 sailboats ever made. The main sail has a traveler. There is a Harkin rolling furler for the jib. A large solar panel array is included. A water maker is also included. Access below is through two hatches, one leads into the aft berth and the other into the main cabin. The Pilot House model has an aft cockpit and an interior steering station for staying dry while island hopping. This two-cabin CSY 44 features wheel steering, self-tailing jib winches, binnacle compass, electric windlass with delta anchor and rode, pressurized water, three burner stove with oven, Garmin radar, B&G chart plotter, two marine heads with showers, water heater, two air conditioners, and an inverter. The aft cabin is very large, with its own head. The bow cabin will accommodate two and has easy access to the forward head. The main salon is huge with two bench seats which can also serve as berths, the steering station, and a spacious galley area. Reason for selling is not using it.

1978 CSY Walkover Center Cockpit The CSY 44 has become legendary among cruisers for their classic lines, well-constructed offshore capabilities, hull strength, great interior accommodations with plentiful ventilation along with sea kindly stable ride, complete with a clipper bow, galleon style transom, cutter rigged traditional design that will be sure to turn heads. CSY did not use wood lamination in its construction, a technique that is the curse of many boats of this vintage. The CSY hull is up to 1.5" of solid fiberglass reinforced plastic resin with 14 dual layers (one sheet of fiberglass mat and one sheet of fiberglass weave = one layer). The avoidance of wood cores extends to the deck, which is also solid fiberglass. The only wood used in the construction of these boats are heavy laminated structural stringers, bulkheads and interior furniture. This vessel has been well-maintained and has never been chartered. She has accommodations for seven in two staterooms and the salon, two heads with showers and well equipped galley.

(Practical Sailor) With the mast right forward in the stem, the hull fullness must be carried forward to support the weight.
