Caribbean Yachting Season

The Caribbean high season for yacht charters runs from mid-December to early May, with Christmas and New Year’s the most popular and busiest times of the year. But due to the islands’ locations near the equator, temperatures remain ideal throughout the year, making off-season charters just as enjoyable.

Keep in mind, however, that there is an increased chance for storms and hurricanes during the summer season, mainly from mid-August to mid-November. Most charter yachts leave the area during that time.

Area Guide: Caribbean Charter Destinations

A girl snorkeling in the BVI

Are you ready to explore all that the Caribbean has to offer? There are three main island areas in the Caribbean, all fantastic destinations for Caribbean charter yacht vacations.

The Grenadines

The Grenadines are untouched by mass tourism and industry, and they are the perfect charter destination if you are looking for solitude and you enjoy exploring remote areas. A great combination of lush rain forests and sandy beaches awaits!

This is a great summer charter destination because the islands aren’t usually affected by hurricanes.

The Leeward Islands

Leeward Islands yacht rentals offer the perfect combination of luxury and solitude. You can visit the glitzy islands of St. Maarten and St. Barts one day and get lost in the remoteness and tranquility of Anguilla the next day.

These islands are rich in history and offer great restaurants, upscale resorts, and trendy harbors.

The Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands are the perfect location for first-time charterers and families because of their calm waters, protected natural anchorages, and short distances between the islands.

The BVI are a great destination for a catamaran or sailing yacht charter. Caribbean locations here have constant yet mild trade winds year round, and the area offers fantastic diving and snorkeling.

Where Can I Charter a Yacht?

When you choose Worldwide Boat as your Caribbean yacht charter broker, we can help you charter a luxury boat anywhere in the Caribbean or anywhere else you’d like to go, from the Mediterranean to Alaska to the Galapagos Islands.

How Do I Book a Private Yacht?

The best Caribbean yacht charters can be booked in just a few easy steps:

  • Choose our experienced yacht charter specialists to assist you through the process of booking a yacht.
  • Search by destination or by boat, or use our advanced search tool to filter your options by the number of guests, yacht type, destination, and/or your budget.
  • Pick the option that best fits your needs and your dream vacation.
  • Reserve your yacht by signing a contract with the yacht owner.
  • Enjoy your vacation!

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean?

Weekly rates for Caribbean boat charters are dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the season, and your destination. Motor yachts, for example, typically range from $15,000 (yachts up to 80 feet) to $150,000 or more (yachts over 150 feet) per week.

During the Caribbean high season (Christmas, New Year’s, and January/February), yacht charter Caribbean prices tend to increase slightly. Areas with large charter fleets, like St. Martin, tend to have more competitive pricing than areas with smaller fleets.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Catamaran in the Caribbean?

Most catamarans offer all-inclusive rates, which start at $10,000 for catamarans under 50 feet and run up to $50,000 or more for catamarans of 80 feet or more. The Caribbean is an ideal destination for a catamaran charter, and across the region, you’ll find a variety of sailing and power cats available for charter.

Ultimately, the cost of a catamaran charter is dependent on the time you visit, where you go, local taxes, and the number of ports you visit. A luxury yacht charter in the Caribbean’s high season (New Year’s or Christmas) will cost significantly more than a catamaran charter in summer.

Can I Rent a Yacht for a Day?

Rates for yacht rentals are usually weekly, but when you talk to a Caribbean yacht charter broker at Worldwide Boat, we can look at your budget, plans, and interests to help you get the best experience possible.

Caribbean Yachting Hotspots

Caribbean sailing charters give you access to white-sand beaches and laid-back island vibes, but they can also offer action-packed itineraries. From island-hopping and hiking to snorkeling and cliff-jumping, adventure awaits on a Caribbean yacht charter!

Some of the region’s must-see destinations include:

  • St. Martin : Known for its upscale eateries and amazing cuisine, as well as high-end spas, shopping and casinos, St. Martin is the yachting capital of the Caribbean. This island is part French and part Dutch, and it’s close to islands like St. Barts and Anguilla, making it a favorite jumping-off point for island-hopping adventures.
  • St. Barts : St. Barts (sometimes called St. Barths) beckons A-listers to its posh beach clubs, fashionable shops, and five-star eateries. Visitors will find a collection of truly spectacular powdery beaches, Michelin-starred restaurants, and excellent shoreside amenities, all within cruising distance of St. Martin.
  • Antigua : Antigua epitomizes the relaxation and bliss of the Caribbean. Known for its 365 beaches (one for every day of the year), the tiny island is a sailor’s dream, offering warm waters, steady winds, safe anchorages, and a lively regatta calendar.
  • Grenada : Grenada is revered for its beautiful beaches, abundant marine wildlife, and vibrant cuisine (spiced with local nutmeg, mace, and allspice). Spend a day relaxing on Grand Anse Beach, which is consistently ranked one of the best in the world. Island-hop to neighboring isles like Petite Martinique, or spend a day snorkeling one of Grenada’s famous reefs.
  • Anguilla : Anguilla is one of the most tranquil Leeward islands. Escape to Dream Bay or one of the numerous nearby coral cays for some supreme R&R. A diving and snorkeling mecca, Anguilla is home to some of the Caribbean’s best shipwreck dives. Plus, the island boasts a calendar of must-see festivals and events, including a jazz festival in November and Carnival in August.

Why Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean?

The best Caribbean yacht charters offer a bit of everything: Relaxation, sun-soaked beaches, delicious culinary treats, refreshing rum-infused cocktails, and calm waters for cruising. Here are some highlights:

The Inescapable Beauty of White-Sand Beaches

Caribbean beaches have almost a mythical quality to them. It’s no wonder explorers were once willing to board wooden ships and travel thousands of miles just to see them in person.

Every island offers a selection of untouched and charming beaches for you to explore. From one-of-a-kind places like “Pig Beach” in the Bahamas to the cosmopolitan Great Bay Beach in Philipsburg, St. Martin, the beaches across the Caribbean offer legendary sights and attractions.

Colorful Celebrations and Friendly Faces

The Caribbean is known for its parades, bars, nightclubs, and parties, not to mention world-famous cocktails. When you want to step off of your luxury yacht charter, Caribbean shores and islands offer a world of fun to immerse yourself in.

A few must-see events include the St. Barth’s Bucket (if you’re into superyacht racing), the annual Carnival celebration, and the St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival .

Amazing Wildlife and Adventure

If snorkeling in vibrant and colorful coral reefs, diving into underwater museums, or parasailing over clear waters are some of the items on your bucket list, you can certainly get it all done during your visit to the Caribbean.

You’ll find a variety of unique adventures, from the underwater sculpture park of the Grenadines to the natural seaside baths in Virgin Gorda and hiking the Pitons in St. Lucia. The Caribbean gives you to plenty of chances to get outside and enjoy yourself.

Nonstop Relaxation

Because the area is so close to the equator, the Caribbean offers warm weather to lounge in all year round. Feel pampered aboard a luxury crewed rental yacht, and then feel calm while sinking your toes into soft, powdery white sand. Enjoy the spas, rum cocktails, and quiet, isolated beaches: Charter guests can experience supreme relaxation in the Caribbean.

Charter a yacht in the BVI's

The British Virgin Islands include Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, and more. There’s no better way to experience the waters and beaches of the BVI's than on a private Caribbean charter with a full crew to pamper you. Of all the islands in the Caribbean, the Virgins are furthest north. This makes them very convenient due to the proximity to San Juan and due to their direct flights from the United States. Catamaran sailing vacations and crewed sailing charters are very popular in the islands, and their protected waters make them a favorite spot for guests that are taking their first private Caribbean yacht charter. To learn more about them:

Charter a yacht in the USVI

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist mainly of the three large islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. With lovely bays, long beaches, lush nature preserves, fabulous diving spots, and excellent, onshore evening entertainment, many choose to vacation in the USVI’s. Caribbean charters often visit both the BVI’s and USVI’s during the same week, as they are close to one another and the waters are generally calmer than in other parts of the Caribbean. They in general are also home to the largest fleet of crewed, all-inclusive, luxury catamarans. To find out more about them:

Charter a Caribbean yacht

The Leewards are situated in the middle of the Caribbean Island chain. The major airports are located on St. Maarten and Antigua. Due to the English, Dutch, and French influences everywhere you look, they exhibit the best example of cultural sophistication anywhere within the Caribbean. If you are looking to see where the rich and famous go on vacation, you will want to visit the island of St. Barts; for many this is a must stop for a Caribbean yacht charter. Many mega yachts are available for rental in St. Maarten, as it has become a popular mega yacht Caribbean base for the winter. To learn more about the Leewards:

Grenadines

The Grenadines are also called The Windward Islands. Oftentimes our guests will choose a sailing charter over a motor yacht when in the Grenadines, due to the more constant tropical breezes that occur. The islands are much less developed than the rest of the Caribbean, and the inhabitants live on their own time schedule, which enhances the feeling of getting away. The northern most island accessible by air is ST. Vincent, while the southern tip’s major airport is on Grenada. There are fewer Caribbean charter yachts based here; however, occasionally some charter yachts are happy to relocate in order to offer a vacation that happens a little off the beaten path. To find out more about the Grenadines:

Caribbean Charters - When To Go.

One of the lovely things about the Caribbean is that the temperatures remain consistent throughout the year; however, there are some other weather considerations that you will want to factor in when making your caribbean yachting vacation plans. Read More....

Vacations here are most popular between November and July.

If you are thinking of a megayacht, you will want to keep in mind that many of these private yachts which are Caribbean based in winter leave in the late spring and early summer months. They will return again in early winter; however, this does limit their availability. To charter a mega yacht, you will want to make sure that you do so well in advance.

Motor, sail, or catamaran yachts, on the other hand, often have selections available year round. Holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter do need to be planned for as early as possible as these are very popular charter times.

The availability for Caribbean charters can also be affected by the weather in other climates, for instance, when the severity of the weather is bad in the United States or Europe, especially between January and February, the charters are often booked. This is due to many clients looking for a break from the cold.

caribbean yachts

As one of the most popular locations in the world, second only to the Mediterranean in popularity, the types of boats available for rental in the Caribbean include all the main types such as motor, sailing, skippered, crewed yachts, catamarans, power boats, sailboat, luxury yachts as well as the ever growing superyacht and mega yachts. Both beginner and experts alike are drawn to the Caribbean for its warm winds, protected waterways and beautiful anchorages. The Caribbean is a special place that has beautiful tropical islands that lie snug within a tropical island necklace as laid out on a large blue sea.

The Caribbean is also steeped in a fertile history of sailing adventure. Ever since the days of galleons and pirates the Caribbean has been host to some of the most satisfying sailing anywhere in the world. On your Caribbean yachting vacation you can find, an incredible amount of choice and variety and all in a relatively small area - thriving bars and Caribbean nightlife; first rate cuisine; spectacular white powder beaches; lush tropical rain forest; cloud-fringed mountain peaks; exotic bird life; amazing diving and snorkeling and a serene blend of European sophistication and warm Caribbean hospitality. The problem is, with so many superb Caribbean yachting locations and charter boats to choose form, where do you start when planning a holiday? With CharterWorld of course…

The Time of Year to Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean:

The main Caribbean sailing season runs from November through to July. The Caribbean primary high season is from mid-December to March, when the winter escapees from North America and Europe arrive in their greatest numbers. The hurricane season is from late July to early October, although hurricanes are in general rare in the southern Caribbean. Unfortunately, they can be prevalent around Cuba, Bahamas and the east coast of the U.S. every few years. This is the least expensive time for chartering in the Caribbean and there are some really good deals are available. However, as well as running the risk of storms, this time of year also tends to be associated with lighter (or non-existent) winds.

As with many boating locations the Caribbean shoulder season, in this case from April to July, is also a great time to charter a boat as there are less shore based visitors, some lovely settled sunny weather, and warm yet steady breeze. The Caribbean is made up of many different multi-nation (and multi-cultural) volcanic islands. There are amazing sailing grounds stretching from Cuba and Jamaica in the west, through the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, The Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands, finishing with Trinidad and Tobago off the coast of Venezuela.

Caribbean Yachting Hot Spots:

Here is a brief list of some of the Caribbean hot spots to consider experiencing when you rent a luxury crewed charter yacht. This is by no means an extensive list and there is more information on things to see and do in the Caribbean under each Caribbean private yacht location. Also, when you hire a yacht with us we will supply you with a customised hand written itinerary suggestion so that you and your crew have a few ideas to choose from on your charter.

General Places/Events Worthy of Experiencing:

- Gustavia Harbour in St Barts - shopping, nightlife, restaurants and European quintessence - Nelson in Dockyards in Antigua - history and beauty in a harbour - Sunset in St Lucia - St Kitts for the beauty, history and magnificent views from Brimstone Hill Fortress - Anegada for its deserted beaches, fringed reefs and the unique flora and fauna of the salt ponds, home to the pink flamingo - The BVIs for the beautiful beaches and anchorages - Guadeloupe for its diversity - one side offers cosmopolitan flair, bordered by beaches and coral reefs and the other has open lands with the fertile, volcanic peaks , rain forest and waterfalls.

Guide to the Caribbean

A picture perfect utopia

Saturated with sun, this dazzling location offers the epitome of a paradise vacation, with sugar white sun-kissed beaches, a warm climate and beautiful scenery all year round. The Caribbean offers abundant water sport opportunities, clear blue skies and inviting azure waters. This captivating location is brimmed with aquatic life which surrounds dozens of picturesque islands, each unique in character and charm.

The Caribbean is an idyllic location for those longing for a chance to unwind in ultimate serenity. With a delectable year round climate and an over 7,000 lush islands to choose from, the Caribbean is a world renowned destination for luxury yacht charters. With each island different to the next, cruise from one to another whilst exploring the cultures, cuisine and landscapes of this tropical destination.

Often divided into five main areas, the Caribbean encompasses the Bahamas and Turks, the Leeward Islands , the Windward Islands , the Greater Antilles and the Leeward Antilles. From plush forestation to cloud-covered mountain summits, there is a diverse range of landscapes to admire. The Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands are often the most popular charter destinations and include St Martin , St Barts , Martinique, Saint Lucia, and Barbados in addition to the British Virgin Islands , which are ideal for sailing yacht charters, where guests can enjoy secluded anchorages, gourmet cuisine and barbecues on the beach in ultimate glamour and style.

On a Caribbean yacht charter, visitors can enjoy an abundance of activities in even the smallest of areas. With a thriving nightlife, lush rainforest, amazing diving opportunities and first class cuisine the Caribbean is a superb location with something to suit everyone.

The turquoise waters are overloaded with treasures, from miniature beach coral isles to extensive mountainous atolls radiating with rich and vibrant culture. Snorkellers can see clearly to the ocean floor, making for an enchanting encounter where marine life, mesmerising outcrops, reefs and wrecks flourish along the sea bed.

The best time to visit the Caribbean is between December and May, however warm temperatures, mild waters and gentle winds make the Caribbean a fantastic destination all year round. A luxury yacht charter in the Caribbean offers the ultimate escape from life on land into a nirvana of stunning islets and colourful cultures which cannot be found anywhere else.

If you are interested in a private crewed luxury yachting vacation in this tropical region view all Caribbean Superyacht Charters which are available to rent.

Any yacht charter in Caribbean Islands will take you to these places for sure. Located in the middle of Leeward Islands, this duo quips for being one of the most favorite tourist spots in the Caribbean area. Pearl white beaches of the Shirley Heights Lookout located in Antigua along with its soothing palm forests indeed make this colonial town a serene place to hop in. As for enjoying solitude in real bliss, Barbuda proves to be the right spot for solo travelers.

Adventure! This is the one word that defines Haiti. Unlike the other Caribbean islands, this place is all about exploring and experiencing nature’s best. The turquoise waters of Labadee, Jacmel’s palm-fringed beaches, Citadelle Laferriere’s juggernaut walls and many more places make Haiti a wild and adventurous zone for everyone. Thus, it becomes a must-go spot on your Caribbean yacht charter itinerary! What’s the best Caribbean cruise line for me?

Whether you're a family of four or a solo adventure junkie, the Caribbean has a cruise for you. Walter Bibikow / Getty Images.

It feels like just about everyone is headed on a cruise ship, and for good reason. There’s a real appeal to embarking on a getaway where your travel plans are already sorted; you only have to unpack once and arrive each morning in an exciting port of call.

Plus, new ships are rolling out incredible bells and whistles that push the limits of fun at sea (think indoor skydiving, roller coasters, and go-karts). At the same time, the cruise industry has shifted towards sustainable efforts that have emerged as fundamental to modern cruising.

Recent statistics from CLIA (the official Cruise Line International Association) show an increase of nearly two million passengers in 2023 (totaling 31.7 million) compared to pre-pandemic numbers in 2019.

And there’s no more popular cruising region than the Caribbean , where upwards of 37 cruise lines with 154 ships rove the idyllic paradise of islands. With so many options, sorting out which ship and itinerary fits you best can be confusing.

Here’s a handy guide to help determine which cruises are best for you, along with tips and advice to ensure you’re setting yourself up for a smooth sail.

Passengers relax as the Oasis of the Seas departs the Bahamas

What Caribbean cruise is best for me?

Sailing for adventure.

Whether you're into ziplining through the rainforest, scuba diving one of the world’s largest coral reefs or swimming at the base of a waterfall, cruises throughout the Caribbean offer excellent opportunities for adventure.

Cruise ports known for high-octane activities include St-Martin (known for its superb scuba diving), Belize (cave-tubing and ziplining throughout rainforest treetops) and St Lucia (the Sapphire Falls Hike).

Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Holland America have cruises that frequent these ports.

Best ships for families

Look for larger ships with kid-friendly pools, expansive kids' clubs and family-friendly entertainment. Royal Caribbean’s fleet features action-packed decks great for families with water slides, laser tag and mini golf.

Disney Cruise Line’s fleet sails extensively throughout the Caribbean to ports that span from Cozumel , Mexico, to Willemstad , Curaçao. The line’s most common Caribbean offerings are shorter 3- and 4-night itineraries that are perfect for families looking for a short trip.

Cruise lines with private islands operate predominantly in the Bahamas , including Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line. These stops are great family destinations as they feature enclosed, private environments with kids' activities and the ease of charging everything to your sea pass card.

Singles at sea

Cruises can be an excellent place for singles to mix and mingle. A standard cruise stateroom rate is usually calculated at a minimum two-adult rate. Singles wishing to book a standard stateroom are typically charged a single supplement fee ranging from 50% - 100% of their base fare.

As the demand for single cruise accommodations grows, new ship builds include solo staterooms, both interior and with balconies. Look to Celebrity Cruises, Virgin Voyages, and Norwegian Cruise Lines for some of the best accommodations for solo travelers.

Most relaxing getaways

The most relaxing cruises sailing through the Caribbean tend to be the smaller ships focusing on a more “resort at sea” vibe. The higher-end ships with all-inclusive rates offer the luxury of seamless vacations. Windstar, Seabourn and Viking are the best lines for a relaxing cruise.

On these ships you’ll find daily activities that swap dance parties and poolside games for fitness-oriented activities like yoga and strength training classes, lectures on upcoming ports and ample lounge chairs to soak up the sun by the pool.

From your first step onboard, all your food and drinks (except for certain vintage wines and spirits), activities and sometimes your port excursions are included in your rate.

Itineraries like the Viking Ocean Cruises’ West Indies Explorer sail a 10-day itinerary roundtrip from San Juan, Puerto Rico, with stops that include Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Kitts, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Roseau, Dominica. Rates for Viking Ocean Cruises include one shore excursion per port.

Best parties at sea

As the classic notion of cruising sunsets – goodbye white glove service, shuffleboard, Baked Alaska – a new era of fun is afloat.

Large ships are built to maximize fun, whether you're hopping pool parties, dancing the night away at late-night discos or cheering your team at rousing sports bars. Special interest cruises are also an excellent option for the most immersive fun at sea, whether that’s a full ship charter rock concert like the Rock Legends Cruise , a trip dedicated to Golden Girls fans , or an LGBTQ+ charter like VACAYA .

Favorite lines that feature an upbeat party vibe include Margaritaville at Sea (particularly on their new Islander), Virgin Voyages and Norwegian Cruise Line.

A quick getaway

You’ll find cruise lines are leaning into shorter itineraries that offer weekend getaways to nearby ports in the Caribbean. Most of these sailings are roundtrip from Florida’s top cruise ports: Miami , Fort Lauderdale and Orlando (Port Canaveral). These are often 3- and 4-night sailings featuring a stop in The Bahamas or Bermuda .

The vibe onboard is often more upbeat and celebratory, as guests do their best to maximize their limited time at sea.

A few favorite lines for this style of travel include Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean (who is launching Utopia of the Seas this summer as its first-ever large-scale ship that will exclusively sail short getaways) and Disney Cruise Line.

An extended journey through the Caribbean

Smaller cruise lines offer longer, extensive itineraries throughout the Caribbean; smaller ships can port far off the beaten path at more remote destinations. Itineraries like Seabourn’s “25-Day Captivating Antillean Treasures” sail to some of the lesser trafficked parts of the Caribbean including Marigot, St. Martin; Carambola Beach, Saint Kitts and Nevis; and Sopers Hole (Frenchmans Cay), BVI. Lines like Silversea, Windstar Cruises and Azamara are favorites that route to these idyllic destinations.

When should I go on my cruise?

There are sailings throughout the Caribbean year-round, with high season running from November through April. This period is known for its optimal sailing conditions and weather.

You’ll find cheaper sailings during the hurricane season, typically July through September, though you risk the chance of your trip being canceled or rerouted to avoid inclement weather.

Holiday sailings (particularly during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve) are also excellent times to sail as cruise lines curate impressive decor and holiday-themed activities.

How do I know if my cruise line is operating sustainably?

Conservation efforts have become a vital tenet of the future of cruising, with the industry gearing towards carbon-zero sailings by 2050 . Efforts underway include ship engines that run cleaner on alternative fuels, advanced wastewater systems that can better clean sewage water and exhaust gas cleaning systems to improve air quality at sea and in port.

Friends of the Earth’s Cruise Ship Report Card is a great resource to assess a ship’s sustainability efforts.

A few lines at the forefront of sustainable sailing include Ponant, Disney Cruise Line and Hurtigruten. Ponant recently became the first maritime cruise line to receive Green Globe certification, which recognizes the line’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.  The line has shifted away from heavy fuel oil and installed catalytic systems to reduce atmospheric emissions.

Disney Cruise Line aims to operate with carbon emissions at net zero by 2030, in part by shifting to alternative fuels like liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrotreated vegetable oil.

Hurtigruten is currently developing a zero-emission propulsion ship, which is aiming to be unveiled by 2030.

There are still a large number of travelers who oppose the notion of cruise ships for not only their impact on the environment, but on local economies as well. Groups like Friends of the Earth , CLIA and Oceana are excellent organizations devoted to regulating the cruise industry.

Need to know before you go

Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when you’re booking a Caribbean cruise.

Book in advance...

Cruise lines offer better rates further from your sailing date, often making sailings available to book more than a year out. The earlier you book, the better the selection of staterooms to choose from.

Or take advantage of last minute deals

Cruise Plum is our go-to with a comprehensive overview of discounted inventories if you're angling for a last-minute getaway.

Opt for third-party travel insurance for hurricane season protection

Travel insurance is the best way to ensure smooth sailings on your Caribbean cruise. Typical cruise insurance rates hover around 5 to 10% of your total trip cost.

Don’t just opt into the cruise line’s designated insurance option; shop around on a platform like Squaremouth for the most value.

Look for a plan specific to cruise travel, with coverage that includes compensation for delays, cancellations (particularly helpful during hurricane season), emergency medical, and the premium option of canceling for any reason (CFAR).

Be hurricane-aware

Hurricane season in the Caribbean is typically July through September. The outlook for the 2024 season from NOAA’s (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season with the potential range of 8-13 hurricanes with winds of at least 74 mph.

Cruise lines work expeditiously to avoid sailing into the path of any major tropical storm or hurricane, often rerouting or shortening itineraries as threats arise. Cruises rarely encounter major storms as they’re able to chart the course of the weather and route accordingly.

In the event you encounter a major storm while at sea, head to the middle of the ship where you’ll feel the rolling of the ship less, take over-the-counter aids like Dramamine or Bonine and keep your eyes on the horizon for stability balance.

You don’t necessarily need a passport

Passports are not required for closed-loop sailings that begin and end at a US port. All you need is a boarding pass, a government photo ID (if you’re 16 years or older) and a certified birth certificate or certificate of US naturalization.

However, keep in mind that you might not be able to disembark the ship at certain ports (those ports include Barbados , Martinique and St-Barthélemy ).

Third-party excursions can be a better value play

If you want to stretch your dollar further, consider booking with local tour operators before arriving at each port. It’s important to note that third-party excursions are the best when they’re morning-only activities.

The ship won’t wait for you if you’re late returning from a third-party excursion. For full-day excursions, consider the line’s offerings, as the ship will wait for you, and there’s nothing worse than missing the boat.

Pasadena Magazine: Whatever Floats Your Boat

Thank you to malina saval and pasadena magazine for this 2-page print article about my cruise on royal caribbean’s icon of the seas, travel journalist lisa niver navigates the adventures aboard royal caribbean ’s icon of the seas..

E mbarking on my journey in Miami, Florida aboard Royal Caribbean’s the Icon of the Seas was not just an adventure, it was a homecoming. Having previously worked on staff at Royal Caribbean on the Rhapsody of the Seas, boarding Icon of the Seas felt like returning to a familiar embrace; albeit grander.

With eight distinct neighborhoods, there is something for everyone, from relaxing in any number of Chill Island’s seven pools and nine whirlpools, to strolling the shops at the two-story Royal Promenade, to exploring Thrill Island’s Category 6 water park with heart-pounding thrills including six water slides. Daredevils like myself can walk the plank at Crown’s Edge dangling 154-feet above the sea, scramble up the Adrenaline Peak rock-climbing wall, surf the flow rider or putt-putt on the Lost Dunes mini-golf course.

Evening entertainment includes singing along with dueling pianos or spotlight karaoke, performances of traditional Broadway shows in the Royal Theater, watching graceful figure skaters at Absolute Zero and spellbinding Olympic high divers in the Aqua Theater.

Central Park, a lush, peaceful oasis with over 30,000 plants, is in the heart of the ship. Some of the interior balcony rooms overlook the vibrant tapestry of greenery that spans five decks.

Central Park also has plenty of dining options, including the Bubbles bar, a walk-up champagne bar, and the Izumi sushi and hibachi restaurant.

Whether you’re grandparents seeking adventure, parents looking to relax, or children eager to explore, the ship caters to everyone, with plenty of activities, and over 40 dining locations. Be sure to include on your list my favorite: the specialty milkshake bar, Desserted.

I was also impressed by the attention to detail and innovation with the ship’s design. At Swim & Tonic, a swim-up bar, you can enjoy your favorite cocktails without ever leaving the refreshing embrace of the pool. And if you’re seeking the ultimate relaxation, the adults-only Hideaway area boasts the first suspended infinity pool at sea. It has breathtaking views and a sense of serenity unlike any other I’ve experienced.

Every cruise aboard the Icon of the Seas includes a stop at the Royal Caribbean private island Coco Cay in the Bahamas. With its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, there is a host of excursions and activities, including Tailspin water slides at Thrill Waterpark, lounging in a hammock beneath swaying palm trees at Oasis Lagoon, snorkeling among colorful coral reefs, or enjoying the bar and music at the new adults-only area, Hideaway Beach.

Back onboard, the Surfside neighborhood caters directly to families with young children, with specialty restaurants including The Lemon Post, which provides cocktails for adults and mocktails for kids. There’s also a bright carousel and a child-friendly slide.

When it comes to accommodations, the ship has 28 options for all tastes and budgets. It offers everything from cozy cabins to luxurious suites. I loved the Ultimate Family Townhouse, a three-story suite that includes a multi-level indoor slide, a wrap-around balcony with a private whirlpool, a white picket fence, and enough space for eight people to sleep. As you ascend the staircase, each stair makes a different musical sound.

The most extraordinary aspect of the Icon of the Seas, however, is its sheer size. The largest cruise ship at sea, it’s larger than an aircraft carrier. It’s also 24% more energy efficient than the required standards and the first Royal Caribbean ship powered by liquefied natural gas. In addition, the ship produces more than 93% of its fresh water onboard.

Yet, despite its size, Icon of the Seas’ many lounges are full of cozy corners to listen to music, dine, and relax. You can find your favorite spot to watch the waves and hang out with friends, old and new.

Reflecting on my time aboard the Icon of the Seas, I am grateful for the opportunity to revisit my roots in the cruise industry and witness how far it has come. More than a voyage, my experience was a celebration of innovation and excellence. I carry with me the memories of a lifetime spent at sea and the promise of future adventures.

Hurricane Beryl has been barreling through the Atlantic for over a week, fueled by exceptionally warm waters to become the earliest Category 5 hurricane.

It decimated Caribbean islands like Barbados and Jamaica , with a pair of islands in St. Vincent and the Grenadines almost entirely destroyed . It slammed into Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula on Friday and struck Texas by Monday, each time regaining its strength over water.

Image

In Texas, where Beryl made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane , the storm unleashed heavy wind and rain, toppling trees and power lines.

Image

Boarded-up windows lined suburbs. Cars were stranded on flooded highways. Residents stayed put inside homes and hotels with no power.

Image

After the worst of the storm passed, many residents worked to clear roads from tree branches and other debris.

Image

Before it reached Texas, Beryl caused havoc in Tulum, Mexico, where tens of thousands were without power as it swept through the region as a Category 2 hurricane.

Image

Wind and rain whipped the seaside city through Friday. Residents sheltered in schools and hotels, and officials patrolled beaches to evacuate residents and tourists alike.

Image

Those displaced were able to find some respite — and food — at shelters, with the army organizing soup kitchens. Others risked traveling through heavily flooded streets.

Image

But Beryl’s heaviest destruction was in the Caribbean, where entire towns — and even whole islands — were left decimated. The Category 5 storm ripped roofs off of homes and destroyed and tangled up boats on shorelines. Waves full of debris crashed onto the sand.

Image

In Jamaica’s capital, Kingston, an arena was converted into a shelter with row upon row of thin beds and blankets.

Image

The destruction Beryl left behind will need months, and in some cases years, of rebuilding and recovery.

UN official describes total devastation in Carriacou following Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl has caused devastation on Union Island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The island of Carriacou in Grenada has been virtually “flattened” by the devastating Hurricane Beryl, a senior UN official there reported on Friday, as humanitarian teams ramp up their support to communities affected across the Caribbean.

Speaking via video link from Grenada, Simon Springett, UN Resident Coordinator in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, outlined a scene of total devastation in Carriacou – where Beryl first made landfall on 1 July.

“ The entire island is completely affected … that is literally 100 per cent of the population ,” he stressed.

Hurricane Beryl is the strongest hurricane in history to form in June in the Atlantic Ocean. Initially a tropical depression, it rapidly intensified into a Category 4 storm and briefly reached Category 5 status, with winds up to 240 km/h (150 mph).

On Friday morning (New York time), it made landfall in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, and is reportedly tracking west-northwest, projected to make landfall in southern Texas, United States on Monday morning.

‘Very complicated crisis’

Mr. Springett highlighted the situation as a “very complicated crisis”, one that is marked by severe logistical and access challenges .

Four days after the hurricane hit, roads on the island are impassable and communications were only restored last night, he said.

“Directly after the hurricane, the seas were exceptionally rough, which made it nearly impossible to get there. The air control towers are out – so there is only fly by visibility . But also, even when things get to the airport, there no roads to access the goods.”

Residents of Union Island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines prepare to board a ferry to reach shelter in the wake of Hurricane Beryl.

International response

Nations near and far are dispatching aid, with a French ship arriving in Carriacou later in the day as well as assistance from Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Springett said.

“We have a large outpouring of international response … it is really an international effort, and the UN is really proud to be to be a part of this ,” he said.

Also speaking, via video link from Bahamas, Dennis Zulu, the Resident Coordinator for Jamaica and Bahamas, echoed international collaboration.

He highlighted that the UN is working in coordination with Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the regional emergency and disaster response agency to ensure a coherent regional response.

“We are poised to mount a coordinated humanitarian response with the international development partner community and are already engaging international partners and organizations in Jamaica,” he added.

Widespread damage

Detailed assessment of damage in Jamaica and in other island nations supported by his office are ongoing, Mr. Zulu said.

“The damage is widely apparent and is felt by people from all walks of life , especially in rural Jamaica, including in the southern parishes of Clarendon, Manchester and Saint Elizabeth, and for those in vulnerable housing,” he added.

He also noted that the Government of Jamaica has put in place an effective response plan, supported by UN and partners, including shelters for those who lost their homes.

Alongside, other key requirements include clean drinking water, access to communication and data and livelihood support.

A family stands outside their home destroyed by Hurricane Beryl in Grenada.

‘Pledge to be there for children’

According to the UN Children’s Fund ( UNICEF ), over 650,000 people – including 150,000 children – in Barbados, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Tobago were in the path of Hurricane Beryl.

Many have lost homes and are being housed in temporary shelters.

The UN agency for its part had pre-positioned life-saving supplies before the storm and is mobilizing supplies and funds for the response.

“[We are] deeply concerned at the plight of those affected by Hurricane Beryl, especially the most vulnerable – children and women … we pledge to be there for children of the affected countries ,” said Pieter Bult, UNICEF Representative for the Eastern Caribbean Area.

Similarly, the UN World Food Programme ( WFP ) has also deployed teams to the affected islands, supporting authorities with assessments and early response.

In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the agency has been asked to provide emergency telecommunications and logistics support, while in Barbados it is assisting with emergency food kits that will be shipped and distributed to people in the affected islands.

‘Very intense’ hurricane season looms

Earlier in the day in Geneva, Vanessa Huguenin, a spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA ), said that while humanitarians have been preparing for this hurricane season, “such a strong storm this early is extremely rare.”

“It is also a warning for the anticipated very intense hurricane season that is coming ,” she said at the regular media briefing at the UN Office at Geneva (UNOG).

The Atlantic storm season runs from June through the end of November, with 17 to 25 named storms expected. The average is 14 storms a year.

Of those, the UN World Meteorological Organization ( WMO ) said that eight to 13 are forecast to become hurricanes – above the average of seven – including four to seven major hurricanes.

A major hurricane is category three, four or five on the Saffir Simpson scale, with winds of 110 mph winds (177 km/h), or higher.

“This new reality of unprecedented hurricanes is becoming an annual and ever-present reality for the Caribbean countries while facing the brunt of climate change,” said Rhea Pierre, Disaster Manager at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

“The severity of damages in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl are tangible and devastating.”

A rendered look a the Royal Railway Utopia Station immersive train experience restaurant.

The new 5,668-passenger Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas is docked in Florida, where sites like Cruise Critic have gotten a preview of the amenities before it enters service on July 19th. That includes a unique experience called Royal Railway Utopia Station , where passengers dine on a virtual train ride while staring at simulated scenery zipping by on giant screens.

The restaurant is built to look like two full-size rail cars with a lavish interior featuring four-person booths lining the sides, each with its own giant display serving as a virtual window. What diners see out those virtual windows will rotate throughout the year. The first experience is Western-themed, with views of mountains, canyons, and gold rush towns.

Subwoofers in the seats simulate vibrations as the virtual train rumbles down nonexistent tracks. (Again, this is inside a cruise ship.) And in addition to a meal and moving scenery, there will be a live show with themed characters interacting with each other and guests.

The last time we checked in on Royal Caribbean’s growing fleet , the Quantum of the Seas was introducing USB charging ports in every room, tablets for the ship’s crew, RFID guest tracking, and a robotic bartender. A decade later, passengers can have an entirely separate vacation experience without leaving the ship.

The restaurant’s capacity is limited to 48 guests, and according to the Royal Caribbean Blog , the experience isn’t included in the cost of the cruise. Pricing will be an extra $119.99 for adults and $59.99 for kids, although passengers paying for an Ultimate Dining Package will only pay a $49.99 upcharge.

Pirates of the Caribbean Under Fire Again After More Guests Offended by Ride

in Disneyland Resort

A group of people wait in line under hanging lanterns at the entrance to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. The ride's sign, featuring tattered black cloth with orange text, is prominently displayed above the queue. The architecture is themed with arches and wooden beams.

Disneyland Resort’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride is under fire again as some guests have been made uncomfortable by another aspect of the ride. The discussion popped up just weeks after Disneyland Park removed Captain Jack Sparrow from Fantasmic!, which recently reopened after a devastating fire.

Pirates of the Caribbean opened in 1967, 12 years after Disneyland Park . Walt Disney Imagineering has changed the Adventureland attraction multiple times in the decades since and replicated those changes in versions of the ride in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort , Disneyland Paris , and Tokyo Disneyland.

In the mid-2000s, the  Pirates of the Caribbean  film franchise made its way into the ride that started it all. Walt Disney Imagineers installed Captain Jack Sparrow animatronics, modeled after Johnny Depp , throughout the attractions worldwide.

About a decade later, Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort announced the most controversial change to Pirates of the Caribbean thus far. They changed a misogynist bride auction scene, turning objectified female animatronics into independent lady pirates.

Nostalgic fans were upset at the significant change, while some progressive Disney Park guests felt Imagineers didn’t go far enough. Last year, one woman went viral for claiming that she felt offended and objectified by the male Pirates of the Caribbean animatronics.

“I just think this is kind of a weird ride,” she explained. “I don’t know… It’s just a little bit rapey.”

The Disney Park guest said she “loved” the ride but was uncomfortable with its implications for female guests.

Some Disney Parks fans agreed and called for the end of Pirates of the Caribbean. Others demanded the ride be left alone.

This week, another Disney Parks fan demanded that Disneyland Resort change Pirates of the Caribbean. This time, the guest claimed that the attraction is ruined in its current condition.

“The fact that boats are nose to tail disrupts the experience,” Redditor u/False_Celebration923 argued. “Bumping the boats in front during the jail/dog/key scene is a mood killer. They need to release boats less often, it’s a persistent issue.”

The Disney Parks fan added that Disney cast members must do more about unruly guests on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

“[I] can’t help but mention the numerous people that talk during the ride, it’s too high,” they said.

Other Disney Parks fans argued that slowing down the popular boat ride would do nothing but increase wait times.

“They don’t need to slow the ride down and make the line take even longer,” said u/tomandshell .

“This is how it’s been since 1968,” u/pquade added. “While some things have changed over the years, very little has changed to the actual flume or dispatch rates. There has always been a slow section with boats backed up starting at the jail and all the way to the lift. Boats have always been backed up there. At least at Disneyland.”

Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland park in California

The historic attraction also wasn’t built to accommodate guests transferring in and out of mobility devices.

“Unfortunately older rides don’t have the special loading zones for guests that need to transfer so that just slows everything down,” u/trer24 explained. “And the way they’re built, there is probably no way to build them in. They didn’t foresee the number of people who use mobility scooters nowadays.”

“Same reason [Haunted Mansion] and [Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters] stop so much,” u/UnlikelyLeague8589 agreed. “Just a sign of the times as more people visit with a mobility device.”
