According to the experts: the principles of yacht design

Designing a luxury yacht is no mean feat and, whether the designer is tasked with a boundary-pushing exterior or an interior that can stand the test of time, designers must unleash their creativity time and time again. With practice comes a design team's best practices, resulting in some of the top modern yacht designs we see today.

But even the most established designers have battled obstacles along the way and learnt lessons the hard way – especially when it comes to meeting a client's wishes.

With that in mind, BOAT speaks to the experts about what they consider to be the best principles of yacht design and their favourite projects they've worked on.

Enrico Lumini

Studio: Hot Lab

What is your number one guiding principle when it comes to yacht design? A good design needs first to be supported by a good idea. There must be thought behind it, especially when it comes to yacht design, which is a perfect mix of product design and architecture. Then a design needs to be “obvious” and, by that, I mean that it needs to look “naturally beautiful”.  It cannot be something to be understood or interpreted, it just needs to strike your eyes at first glance. So, whenever I am tempted to add more lines or more surfaces, then I understand that the design is complete – when you feel the need to add something it means either you are designing unnecessary details or that you are trying to hide the lack of ideas with those details.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned in yacht design? To understand clients’ non-verbalised requests.  Doing this job, you get to know different kinds of people – most of them with very strong personalities. One thing they all have in common is to expect that you understand their needs, whether they tell you directly or not.  Sometimes they have a precise idea in mind but do not know how to express it; other times they only have a partial idea of what to expect. You need to fill that gap.

Yacht design involves several necessary soft skills which are usually underestimated, but crucial to keep your clients satisfied and happy along the process. This can mean being available to jump on a private plane and have a meeting during the flight or understanding from a wool coat thrown on a table what the material moodboard of the vessel is going to be like.

What is your favourite design you’ve ever worked on and why? It probably is the 80-metre concept design during Covid time for a north European shipyard. During that moment, the unexpected quantity of time we had allowed us to concentrate a bit more on the ideas and less on production and, for this reason, something extraordinary came out.  Our new approach to design – cleaner, smoother and simpler – was born with that concept and this is why it is still my favourite one.

Marnix J. Hoekstra

Studio: Vripack

What is your number one guiding principle when it comes to yacht design? Good yacht design only exists when underpinned by great naval architecture.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned in yacht design? Become a good listener. You've got to ask "why?" five times to get to the root cause of [a problem]. This is ultimately how we, as part of the bigger team, solved the energy puzzle for Project Zero . We couldn't get the yacht to work only on electrical energy and by continuing to ask why that was over and over again, the answer was found in splitting the energy into electrical and thermal. That essentially led to being able to now have in build the world's first fossil-fuel-free yacht.

What is your favourite design you’ve ever worked on and why? Honestly, I have many and learned that the ones that hurt the most when creating often turn out the best. Friction in the team between style and technology, unhappy clients and particularly my conscience telling me there's space for something better and more fitting for the client's deeper needs turns out to be an amazing catalyst to keep on drawing, calculating, researching and getting into that state-of-mind where the solution appears by itself. It's that flow I would love to live in forever.

Studio: Winch Design

What is your number one guiding principle when it comes to yacht design? We believe in comfort, adventure and possibility, in freedom of exploration and freedom of vision. Winch Design has developed a design philosophy that is unconstrained by a "house style" – but instead is a reflection of the client and their character. Each project is unique, and we take pride in having no "one size fits all" approach to design. The studios are relentlessly creative, and we are dedicated to finding solutions to unprecedented challenges, be it on a grand, breathtaking superyacht or a pared-back, contemporary sailing yacht. Our clients are often as much a part of the design process as our teams are. We believe that the experience of designing the project is as important as the project itself, and they need to enjoy every moment with us.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned in yacht design? Incredible feats can be achieved by pushing the boundaries of design further than you might initially think possible. One of the best examples of this from the Winch Design studio is 80-metre Excellence . Excellence is a remarkable feat of ingenuity with her unique superstructure, advanced technical design and daring innovation. Her razor-sharp bow swooping back a full 10 metres before joining the line of the main deck set a new standard and required Abeking & Rasmussen to spend many long hours perfecting and tank testing the naval architecture.

What is your favourite design you’ve ever worked on and why? It is very hard to pick a favourite as I have worked on so many incredible projects over the years. One of the most interesting projects we are currently working on is the Flexplorer 146 , a 44-metre explorer yacht with Cantiere delle Marche due for delivery in 2025.

The owner and his young family have a deep commitment to nature and sustainability and the interior will therefore be crafted using eco-friendly materials. The family plans to spend a large amount of time on the yacht and have a real interest in healthy, sustainable living. The interior will favour practices that create low levels of EMF and non-toxic materials with low VOCs to deliver a clean living environment.

Laura Pomponi

Studio: Luxury Projects

What is your number one guiding principle when it comes to yacht design? Place the client at the heart of every project and operate with the highest level of integrity. That’s Luxury Projects' golden rule. We give everything and perform to the best of our abilities to fulfil and honour our commitments. The studio follows every step of the design and construction, from concept to completion. Another very important aspect is that the clients have to find the design process as enjoyable as possible.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned in yacht design? The best lesson we’ve learned is to always stick to our golden rule. We also make sure that every design, concept, innovation and invention is feasible. This latest lesson implied that the studio had to acquire further and further technical skills and field experience to make sure of it. Back in our very early days, I spent a fair amount of time crawling into holes and hidden corners of a yacht to know the spaces and system to the millimetre. Not to mention the merry times spent with joiners, cabinetmakers, carvers and furniture makers. We still do that, by the way, to gain fundamental first-hand knowledge on how a yacht is built. And there are thousands of lessons to be learnt from craftsmen and artisans who, in many cases, are true artists.

What is your favourite design you’ve ever worked on and why? Difficult to pick as each project is a piece of our heart. But if we really have to, then as far as new builds, I would say 70-metre Alfa and 60-metre Moonstone as both projects come from a truly holistic design concept. As far as refit: 90-metre Nero for the technical challenges, but also 38-metre Destiny . In this latest case, one of the main challenges was to work within a very tight schedule and a budget set prior to the definition of the project.

Enrico Gobbi

Studio: Team for Design

What is your number one guiding principle when it comes to yacht design? The main guidelines for me are the proportions of the project and this is true both for exterior design and interior design. They are two different yet close worlds and, especially in yacht design, they must be in synergy. When we begin a project from blank, the first character lines we trace need to be well-proportioned, otherwise, the project won't work. For interiors, we pursue a perfect balance of shapes, colours and volumes – all of which are fundamental before drilling into details.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned in yacht design? The best lesson I learnt was from the time the owners of a yacht designed by us invited us to spend time on board. It allowed me to understand perfectly how important the nautical aspects are in a yacht project, where it's desirable to have a 'wow' interior while keeping in mind the seaworthiness, also in large superyachts 70 metres and above. The yacht is an architecture that moves, and having the opportunity to live it was probably the first important lesson.

What is your favourite design you’ve ever worked on and why? I don't have a single favourite design, but one of the yachts that gave me major satisfaction was Utopia IV , one of the fastest superyachts in the world. In this project, we were challenged to keep the yacht as light as possible in order not to compromise her performance, yet at the same time making her elegant and luxurious. The aim was also to make this yacht extremely sleek, aerodynamic and automotive-inspired, with a dynamic appeal even when still.

Studio: Espen Øino International

What is your number one guiding principle when it comes to yacht design? Defining a clear, unambiguous brief with the client and/or his or her’s representative(s) before starting designing.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned in yacht design? Never be afraid of questioning established principles in design, construction and/or operations.

What is your favourite design you’ve ever worked on and why? Ha – always the last one, or perhaps the next one.

Mario Pedol

Studio: Nauta D esign

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned in yacht design? It's difficult to say what is the best, but one that I learned in my very early years was during a six-month apprenticeship at Scott Kaufman's studio in Manhattan. At the time, Scott was one of the leading naval architects and sailing yacht designers – designing impeccably beautiful yachts. He had to combine aesthetics and function – in his case being a specialist in racing yachts – considering performance and an appealing look to the yachts.

What is your favourite design you’ve ever worked on and why? My favourite design that I've worked on was particularly interesting and challenging as it was my first experience in the big motor yacht world. I'm talking about the 80-metre Project Light with  Fincantieri Yachts , who did the full engineering. It anticipated the future and what is now, 15 years later, starting to become the general trend and a different way of living on a yacht that size. We completely changed the ratio between outdoor and inside areas, creating a more direct, seamless connection between the two and emphasising the blend into the environment around the yacht. This meant also a completely different distribution of volumes in the superstructure, much more centred than the existing fleet of the time. One of the most appreciated compliments I ever had in my career was during a boat show when an American client, who was admiring this project, said: "This yacht could've been designed by Frank Lloyd Wright". This for me was really "wow". I was really happy about it, of course.

Francesca Muzio

Studio: FM Architettura

What is your number one guiding principle when it comes to yacht design? I have two principles that in my view drive any of our projects whether it be a yacht, home, or anything else. One: listen to your client's wishes, dreams, and needs. Two: Personal, beauty and cosiness. A yacht project must be personal and needs to reflect the personality of the owners and their families.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned in yacht design? At the beginning of my career in yachting, I was under the impression that many things were not possible at a balanced price. I thought that everything was extremely expensive, the box of yacht design was full of limits, and that there were no possible solutions.

One time an elder Lebanese client taught me that anything was possible and my job was not only to design but to find practical solutions that could satisfy his wishes, without losing sight of budget. I accepted the challenge. I started to study how a yacht was built. I dressed in blue overalls and I started to speak with every worker, every engineer and every supplier, collecting any pieces of information and data to create the deepest knowledge possible. I have now built several vessels for this gentleman.

What is your favourite design you’ve ever worked on and why? At the end of the day, there is no all-time favourite, there are certain projects that pushed us to change our paradigms and our strong beliefs. Lately, we have been developing a project and every time we have presented the initial proposal the client requested to simplify and reduce details. We went back to the drawing board. We had to research Japanese, Swedish, and Italian Architecture and create a new language for our design. When we made the new presentation, the client had a sparkle in their eyes and I realised that we had exceeded their expectations.

Phases of a new build

The construction of a new yacht is an exciting and rewarding process, requiring careful planning and attention to detail. While each new construction and shipyard will be unique, they follow a similar approach.

Design and planning

This is the first and most crucial phase of any new build. Our team will work closely with you to determine your needs and preferences. We will need to discuss your specific requirements: What kind of build do you want? Where do you plan to cruise? What kind of performance will your vessel need? What spaces and amenities do you envision having aboard?

We will then advise which shipyards, architects and designers are the most suitable for your project and work with them to create a customized design to meet your needs.

Hull construction

Once the design is finalized, hull construction begins. Our team will liaise with your chosen shipyard to ensure that high-quality materials and advanced construction techniques are used to create a strong and durable hull that will withstand the rigors of the sea. Throughout the hull construction phase, we closely communicate with the shipyard to monitor progress and ensure the work is carried out to your specifications.

Interior and deck construction

With the hull complete, the focus shifts to the interiors and deck spaces. Skilled artisans will install wiring, plumbing and other systems and create the various rooms and interior and exterior living spaces.

Sea trials and delivery

The final construction phase involves several sea trials to test the yacht’s performance and ensure all systems function correctly. Once this has been completed to your satisfaction, your vessel is ready to be delivered.

Yacht design

What sort of build are you interested in? You have options.

Generally, there are three kinds of builds, each with pros and cons. They depend on the level of customization you’d like.

Production builds are usually part of a line of pre-designed vessels. They often have standard features and accessories and offer the least customizability. They usually are the fastest to deliver and the least expensive option but can be hard to modify or upgrade after purchase. However, because they are pre-designed, they’re a proven platform with demonstrated quality.

Semi-custom

Semi-custom builds are a compromise between production and fully custom builds. They offer many customizable opportunities—particularly concerning interior and exterior décor, design, appliances and finishes—and allow the owner to be closely involved in the build. Like production builds, they are part of a pre-designed line, expediting build time and reducing costs and risk.

Entirely custom builds are naturally the most expensive and time-intensive option. However, nothing is off limits, from the size and layout to amenities, interior and exterior design and technical specifications.

Whichever you envision, we know the right experts for you.

6 Architects That Are Now Creating Designs for Superyachts

Exciting yacht design doesn’t require reinventing the wheel. But a fresh view always helps. That’s why more yacht owners are looking for land-based architects and designers for their new build and refit interiors, preferring a cross-pollination of ideas over the tried and true.

The first owner to shy away from the traditional yacht designer set was billionaire Lukas Lundin, who tasked Italian architect Cristina Gherardi Benardeau to design the interior of the 274-foot Savannah. The Feadship, launched in 2015, is largely remembered as the first superyacht with a hybrid propulsion package. But the interior is just as radical.

Benardeau, a designer of retail space for Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior Couture, gave the 262-foot yacht the world’s first “Nemo lounge,” or a bubble in the hull where the owners and guests could see underwater.  It also featured what looked like a floating superstructure, employing long strips of tinted glass inspired by skyscrapers. Savannah was the first boat to receive full metallic exterior paint job to blend in with the ocean surroundings—an idea later seen on superyacht Kensho, when it delivered in 2022.

Since then, a number of owners and boatbuilders have employed residential architects to do interior designs, as well as offer exterior flourishes (though naval architects complete the structures and running surfaces.) Rome architect Achille Salvagni has done projects for Rossinavi and Azimut, Lord Norman Foster created a series that later became the YachtPlus fleet, Lazzarini & Pickering designed the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M, and next year, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez will show their talents on Azimut’s SeaDeck Series.

Even residential stalwarts like Zaha Hadid Architects can’t help but experiment with nautical projects. Following the 2016 reveal of the firm’s Unique Circle Yachts series, the studio collaborated with Vitruvius Yachts this year on Britain’s new “royal yacht” project. And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for Oneiric, a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.

From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.

<p>Architect Roberto Palomba has been designing houses for decades. His Milan-based studio, Palomba Serafini Associati, includes the Italian Consulate in Detroit, home décor and even tableware, among its past projects. His first yacht is the <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/amer-41-explorer-superyacht-cool-innovations-1234794265/">Amer</a> F100, which features a unique “Glass Cabin” as the main salon. It was designed in partnership with Ludovica Serafini. “My aim was to change some standard boat elements to create something completely different,” Palomba told <em>Robb Report</em> during the yacht’s world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “Certainly, our perspective offers a fresh look, an architectural vision rooted in the world of architecture and interior design, translated into the realm of yacht design.” The Glass Cabin is an architectural glass box that encases the main salon and formal dining area with windows that are larger than other yachts with similar dimensions. The garden creates openness, light and a continuous connection with the sea. Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.</p>

<p><a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/admiral-yachts-246-foot-kensho-new-design-features-1234763352/"><em>Kensho</em></a>‘s owner was a first-time yacht buyer who wanted a one-of-a-kind vessel. He looked beyond the pool of yachting talent for a designer who could create a signature statement inside the 246-foot Admiral. The owner eventually decided on Paris design house Jouin Manku, an experienced architecture and industrial design studio, without a single yacht to its name. Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. Variations on the established interiors include lofty 8.9-foot-tall ceilings, open-plan cabin layouts (where the bathrooms are on display) and locating the owner’s salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to the upper deck where the captains’ wheelhouse is traditionally located.  “We drew on our restaurant design experience to create an ambience and furniture that is practical yet opulent,” Manku told <em>Robb Report</em>. “The dining chairs have ski feet that make it easy for guests to slide in and out, and we incorporated flattering lighting rather than ceiling spotlights.” The end result is a stunning, personalized interior that is unique in yachting. </p>

<p>Refits are also getting design overhauls by non-yacht designers. Lürssen’s 318-foot <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/superyacht-carinthia-vii-refit-lurssen-1235333612/"><em>Carinthia VII</em></a>, first delivered in 2002 and designed by Tim Heywood, was sold in 2022 to a new owner. He called on Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects for what turned out to be a major refit in a nearly record 300 days. The architectural studio is experienced in real estate, including a few of the owner’s private properties. But yacht refits are a recent addition to its portfolio. “The key to any project’s success is to know the person, their lifestyle and the way they think,” architect Paolo Bizzozero said. “Only with these three ingredients can you remedy a truly bespoke environment that works for them and for their life.” Key additions include a 1,334-sq. ft. sundeck, with a large dining table and teppanyaki grill. Equally impressive was the 39-foot-long glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck (with two large televisions to view live sports), and a 968-sq. ft. air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck that also serves as a winter garden.</p>

<p>Bentley fans who dream of a book-matched yacht interior might look closely at the 67-foot Contest 67CS.  Commissioned by a private client and launched in November, it is the first collaboration between Bentley and Contest Yachts. with all the design flair Bentley could bring to a yacht. Conceived to match the luxe design of a custom continental GT coupe, the sailboat features the same materials, motifs and craftsmanship on its cars and home designs, including the same hand-stitching found on the Bentley steering wheel and the yacht’s Malvern Chair. Bespoke one-offs include a bar and vanity unit, the captain’s chair and “Egg” table, and a sofa which was hand-built at Bentley’s engineering facility and finished in its signature trim. The brand’s iconic diamond-quilted hides were also included across entire yacht interior. Small details like the tissue box and drink coasters were created from scratch to match the owner’s taste.</p>

He had clear ideas about the functional layout of the boat, so he appointed commercial design firm Burdifilek to realize that vision. The Toronto-based co-founder, Diego Burdi, adopted a “marine design” approach. “I believe strongly that you should feel like you’re on a boat,” he told <em>Robb Report</em>. That is apparent in areas like the the lower-deck staterooms where the bulkheads hug the curve of the hull. Carved and layered wooden ceilings—a detail introduced from the owner’s experience in real estate—add drama and tactility. Most significantly, Burdi reversed the central stairwell and tucked it into the perimeter of the yacht to create a wider walkthrough and, in so doing, a work of art.</p>

<p>The 279-foot <em>Symbiosis</em> is Studio KMJ’s nature-driven introduction to the world of superyacht design. Unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show, the 3,000 GT concept speaks to a rising trend for biophilic design with 10 nature-driven features. These include a “tree of life” planted on the main deck aft that stretches across two decks, a 1,000-sq. ft. irrigated lawn tended by a gardener and intended for both play and picnics, and a life-sized herbarium called “The Sanctum” where herbs, spices and vegetables can be cultivated. The Swiss designer Kurt Merki Jr collaborated with Axel Massmann, CEO of Yacht-Green, who acted as a strategic advisor on best practices to “green” the superyacht lifestyle. Swing keel systems

We designed swing keel systems for yachts of different sizes. Among those was a 68 ft yacht from GRP (composite construction) with a 14 t heavy keel foil. The draft of this keel is 3,85 m if the foil is extended. If the foil is up, the draft is reduced to 1,55 m. These are remarkable values, which allow this yacht to sail almost in every marina or waters.

Swing keels are good choice with deck house yachts, that have a raised seating arrangement, since the keel system can be placed usually not visible under these arrangements. The hydraulic system though has to provide a little more power, since the keel foils are moved around big bearings and a geometric solution is required.

Additionally an opening behind the foil if in sailing position results when the keel is down. It requires to be closed, since the dynamic of the seawater can result in noise and resistance when expanding in this opening. We therefore designed a clothing mechanism that automatically closes this opening when the keel is lowered and it opens again fully automatically if the keel is raised.

All our keel systems work without any problems for years now.

Lifting keel  system

We designed lifting keels for different size yachts. One advantage of a lifting keel is that the hydraulic system has to overcome only the weight of the system, the weight of the bulb and some friction.

The major difference in lifting keel systems is the length of the keel box, which can reach from hull bottom to the deck, providing the maximum lift possible. We designed other systems that disappear in the galley area in a counter and do not disturb the open layout of the interior arrangement. The lift – depending of the size of the yacht – is about 70 cm. Our keel systems are calculated with sufficient reserve in strength and have safety device,  that make a loss duringn normal use – so to say – impossible.

All our keel systems work for many years without any problems.

Telescopic keel system

The need and the demand has always be present, but has been increasing, because climate changes show influence even in the use in sailing and in storing yachts.

Therefor it is not anymore only the need to sail in shallow bays and marinas. It is even more important to be able to leave the yachts berth and return to it at all under the given conditions.

The telescopic keel system is especially useful for new existing designs, since the interior arrangement needs not to be changed. The existing interior structure can remain, since moments and keel weights and loads can be matched to the existing fixed keel design. An overload of the interior structure can be avoided. Also, aim is, to maintain size and position of the keel bolts.

The concept is a telescopic keel system, that can be fitted to many existing designs. This means that yachts of about 40 to 60 ft length can reduce the draft by about 70 cm. Meaning, that yachts with a total draft of about 2.50 m can reduce the draft to about 1.80 m.

We calculate the amount of draft reduction and keel design for every yacht individually.

Every keel system contains safety devices, that a loss of the keel under normal operation conditions is not possible.

Also the system contains reasonable safety factors.
