INSTRUCTOR TO STUDENT RATIO Maxiumum 3 students to 1 Instructor. You often will find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Candidates should be competent to the standard of Level 2 (including the coastal endorsement). Whilst the course does include time on developing your boat handling we will not have time to develop basic techniques. It is recommended that attendees acquire a First Aid certificate and VHF Operators Certificate either before or after attending the course.

MINIMUM AGE 16. Children over 16 (and under 18) can attend a normal course at any time but we must have the parent/guardian’s specific permission  – please call to discuss.

COURSE DATES We run Intermediate courses on our boats at least every month but for groups of 2 or 3 we are always happy to schedule dates to suit your diary. If you are a commercial or government organisation, then we can organise a course to suit you.

Course Price £340 Per Person

Aimed at experienced leisure boaters and those seeking to work commercially. The Advanced Course can be followed by the Advanced Examination. This course addresses areas such as night navigation, rough water handling and search patterns – a great course!

COURSE DURATION 2 days. We start at 9am on day one and will finish about 3 – 4 hours after it gets dark. On day two we start at 10am and typically finish between 4 and 5pm.

INSTRUCTOR – STUDENT RATIO 3 students to 1 Instructor. You often will find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE The course assumes you can handle a powerboat very well as it is about developing your skills rather than starting them! It also assumes you understand navigation to the level of Yachtmaster/Coastal Skipper Theory (although you don’t actually need the qualification). We would always suggest that we have a chat with you about your experience before you book the course to ensure that this is the best course for you

MINIMUM AGE 17

COURSE DATES We run Advanced courses on our boats at least every two months but for groups of 2 or 3 we are always happy to schedule dates to suit your diary. If you are a commercial or government organisation, then we can organise a course to suit you.

RYA CoC exam for Power Boats

What training and preparation should I undertake before taking the exam

2 Year relevant experience, including night pilotage. Ideally around 30 days, 2 days as skipper. 800 miles and 12-night hours. If you hold and RYA advance Power Boat course completion certificate the sea time is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles and 12-night hours. Your theory knowledge should be at Yachtmaster theory level.

This will vary from person to person, but it is easy to underestimate the level that you need to be at for the Advanced Examination. The common mistake to make is to assume that because you have taken the Advanced Powerboat Course that you are at the right level. The Advanced Powerboat Course is a good work-up to the exam and certainly most people should undertake it. However, by way of example the Advanced Course may introduce you to night navigation whereas the exam requires you to demonstrate a high degree of competence at night way above the level you would have been at if the Advanced Course was your first trip out at night. In short, the advanced course introduces techniques and methods whilst the exam tests that using those techniques and methods is second nature to you. This will only be the case if you have invested plenty of time practicing the methods and actually put them into practice on real passages.

Make sure that ahead of the exam that you ensure that your theory is fully up to scratch (you need to be at the level of RYA Yachtmaster Theory) and put time in ensuring your close quarter boat handling is very good in any conditions. You should be able to put a RIB into almost any marina berth the examiner chooses either bow or stern first in any conditions. Practicing the various pilotage techniques, you will use day and night to ensure you are totally happy with their use is of course essential.

The examiner has to judge whether to recommend that you are capable of being responsible for 12 passengers, so he/she has to be sure that you have the necessary skills.

Charter of RIB for examination cost varies according to number of examinees. One person £210, Two persons £120 per head, Three persons £80 per head plus the RYA exam fee.

Aimed at those already working as a tender driver transferring guests/passengers in sectors such as the superyacht world or in other environments where you may need to transfer guests and passengers.

COURSE DURATION

2 days. We start at 9am on day one and will finish about 2 – 3 hours after it gets dark. On day two we start at 10am and typically finish between 4 and 5pm.

INSTRUCTOR – STUDENT RATIO

3 students to 1 Instructor. You will often find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE

The entry requirement for this course is RYA Powerboat Level 2 course with the strong recommendation that attendees already possess the RYA VHF Short Range Radio Certificate and the RYA or STCW95 one day First Aid qualification.

Course Price £180 Per Person

If you are looking to use your own boat or hire a boat, which is up to 10m in length, especially when abroad, then it is almost certain you will need to hold the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

If you already have an appropriate RYA qualification you will be able to apply for the ICC directly without the need for an assessment. Being a powerboat school we can teach you on a Rib or your powerboat.

If you want to learn on a cruising vessel over 10 meters then we can arrange that for you too.

  • Boating abroad

You must log in to your personal MyRYA account to apply or renew an ICC.

If you’re looking to operate a pleasure craft or hire a boat outside the UK and need to evidence your competence, then the UK International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (the ICC) issued by the RYA, may be useful.

What is the ICC?

The ICC is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in a country you are visiting (i.e. a country you are not a citizen or a resident of).

It’s an assurance from one government to another that the certificate holder is sufficiently competent to be operating a pleasure craft, despite not holding the visited country’s certificate.

Is the ICC for me?

When you visit another country, in most circumstances (in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) you can be required to comply with the maritime legislation of the visited country (the Coastal State) in addition to that of your vessel’s country of registration.

To know whether the ICC is the right document for your circumstances you need to consider the applicable legislation.

Find out more about applicable legislation and flag and coastal states .

What is Resolution No. 40 and why is it important?

The ICC was developed under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee Working Party on Inland Water Transport Resolution No. 40, the UK Government has accepted Resolution No. 40 and has authorised the RYA to issue a UK ICC on its behalf.

Resolution No. 40 details how and to who the ICC may be issued, the syllabus requirements and the layout of the certificate. The Resolution also lists the countries which have notified the UNECE Secretariat that they have accepted the resolution.

Find out more about ICC Resolution No. 40

your ICC questions answered

Eligibility - nationality based criteria

I’m British. Can I get a UK ICC from the RYA?

Yes. You’ll need to provide a copy of a document or a combination of documents with your ICC application, which allow the RYA to verify your nationality. This will usually be a copy of your passport.

Find out more

I’m a citizen of a country that has accepted Resolution 40. Can the RYA issue me with an ICC?

The RYA will only issue you with an ICC if you are resident in the UK.

I’m a citizen of a country, other than the UK, that has not accepted Resolution 40. Can the RYA issue me with an ICC?

The RYA can issue you with an ICC. However, if the country you are a national of accepts Resolution No. 40 in the future you will not be able to amend or renew your ICC. You must return the certificate to the RYA and you will not be entitled to any refund. You may wish to find out if the country you are citizen of intends to accept the ICC in the future.

Eligibility - competence based criteria

I’ve been boating for a long time but have never taken any formal courses. Can I get a UK ICC issued by the RYA?

Applicants for the UK ICC issued by the RYA, who do not hold an eligible certificate but already have the required level of competence can take ICC assessments to demonstrate their competence for each of the categories they would like to have validated on their ICC.

Read our detailed information on how to evidence your boating competence for the issue of a UK ICC.

I only have a shorebased course completion certificate, I didn’t take a practical course. Can I still apply for a UK ICC from the RYA?

To be issued with a UK ICC by the RYA you must provide evidence of your competence for both the type of vessel categories you would like to be validated on your certificate and the coastal waters and / or inland waters category.

An RYA Day Skipper Shorebased or higher Course Completion Certificate can be used to validate the coastal waters category only. A shorebased certificate on its own is not sufficient. You must also provide evidence of your competence for at least one of the type of vessel categories.

Can I covert non-RYA qualifications into an ICC?

In general, non RYA certificates cannot be used to evidence your competence for the issue of a UK ICC by the RYA. Some certificates issued for or on behalf of the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) can be used in an ICC application as evidence of competence.

Application process for UK ICC

Do I need to provide a photograph?

Yes, a current passport sized head and shoulders photo of the certificate holder is printed on the ICC. A suitable photo must be submitted with your application.

Photo specifications

Passport style photograph i.e. a photo of the head and shoulders in portrait orientation

  • Clear and in focus
  • Contains no other objects or people
  • Taken against a plain light-coloured background
  • In clear contrast to the background
  • Not have 'red eye' - eyes must be open and visible
  • The applicant must be facing forwards and looking straight at the camera

I’m applying online, how do I upload my passport sized photograph and proof of eligibility?

You’ll be prompted to upload this digitally in a PDF format - we also accept jpg for photos. HEIC format will not be accepted. Documents must not exceed 5MB.

Can my ICC be sent to an alternative address?

No, your ICC must be sent to the address you give on your application form which is the address printed on the certificate.

I’ve downloaded the pdf application form and I’m applying by post. Do I send original documents to support my application or are copies sufficient?

Please DO NOT send original documents.

You should send copies only of your passport, driving licence and any other certificates or documents you need in support of your application.

RYA / MCA Powerboat Courses and Certification

The RYA Powerboat Certificates of Competence are used all over the world by skippers working around harbours and offshore. International commercial (RYA/MCA) and recreational ICC certificates available. We are the leading skipper training academy in South Africa. Our courses cover local training, exams for South Africa and specialist courses for people boating abroad.

RYA Powerboat Training Courses

This includes Superyacht crew, Yachtmaster, Stewardesses , Fishing/Dive charters, and Harbour Masters. Anyone joining the Superyacht industry will be pleased to hear that the new RYA Tender Operators course is now available with us. See the information below.

RYA Level 2 Powerboat Certificate

Our RYA Powerboat Level 2 course offers a thorough introduction to powerboat handling. It is often used as the prerequisite for attending other courses and is the perfect introduction to power-boating for anyone wanting to attend a practical informative 2-day training course. It can also provide valuable experience for anyone looking to gain the SAMSA under 9m skippers license.

The Yacht industry widely accepts this certificate as a starting point for their crew. However, the benchmark is moving and for crew wishing to drive the full range of tenders, a yacht officer will need to have some practical experience and have other courses such as the Tender Operator or Advanced powerboat course and for those with a season’s experience the Advance Exam and commercial endorsement.

  • Launching and recovery
  • Confined space maneuvering

H2O Racing

Abu Dhabi , UAE, Monday, 09 June 2003 - With the Federation of Russia Grand Prix scheduled for August 17, the UIM Powerboat Homologation Committee plans to visit the site of the race, not far from Moscow center, from June 16-20, 2003. The Federation of Russia Grand Prix is the fifth race on the 2003 UIM F1 Powerboat Championship calendar and the ninth time that an F1 Powerboat Championship event takes place in Russia.

Organisers of the 2003 event plan a great show for an expected 50,000 spectators. Since 1989, FI Powerboats have raced in Minsk (1989), Leningrad (1990,1991), St Petersburg (1995,1996) and Moscow (1997, 1998 and 1999).

"After three years away, I am happy to see the F1 Powerboat Championship back in Moscow, thanks to the Moscow Government and to 7TV Sports Television Channel," said Nicolo di San Germano, promoter of the UIM F1 Powerboat series. "This Grand Prix is an exciting new event, even though the Federation of Russia has hosted F1 Powerboat racing before.

"The last Grand Prix in Moscow gave us a lot of action on the river in the city's famous Gorki Park. But the 2003 edition will take place in Strogino, seven kilometres away from the center of Moscow. Found by Pierre Bogdanov, President of the Russian Federation Motonautique, this new location will allow FI Powerboat racing on a much wider circuit, compared with Gorki Park. "

The charismatic di San Germano has worked assiduously since 1993 to make F1 Powerboat racing a global sport. "I am gratified to see that some of the concepts that I initiated have begun to take root," di San Germano said. These include among others proper racing pits and hospitality units.

"In the last ten years, the F1 Powerboat racing programme has taken the contenders to Asia, Europe and the Middle East, and Far East" di San Germano said. The promoter has dreams of additional locations in the future. "But today," he said, "I really hope that the Homologation Committee will find that the circuit in Strogino meets all the necessary criteria for a good show, perfect organisation, and, above all, safety."
