Date: December 27-30, 2023 Location: Coral Reef Yacht Club, Miami

The Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta brings world-class sailing talent to South Florida in a five-day event that has become the largest international youth regatta in the U.S. and South America for sailors ages 8-18. Featuring more than 700 sailors from 21 nations, past regatta participants have achieved notoriety in the sailing world, including U.S. Junior Women’s singlehanded champion Sophia Reineke, who competed in the 2013 event.

( Jan. 4, 2024 ) The high school sailing season may still be a few months away, but three members of the Whalers’ sailing team returned to the water last week and competed in the TUUCI Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in Miami, Fla.

Seniors Archie Ferguson and Avery Moore, along with junior Rory Murray, competed in the event which is part of Club 420’s Triple Crown, a series of races featuring the top youth sailors from across North America.

“We’ve competed in regattas of this scale, but competing against such great sailors, I think it’s really important we look at the experience gained,” Ferguson said. “The fact that we placed where we were shows that while we do have a lot to improve on, I think we have a really solid foundation for the upcoming season.”

Ferguson and Moore finished in 72nd place out of 86 teams competing in the event, though Moore was not available to participate in  all races due to injury. When Moore was unavailable, Ferguson sailed with Ella Smith of St. Augustine, Fla.

Murray sailed with Luke Steindler, a summer resident, finishing 56th.

Held at the Coral Reef Yacht Club, the conditions in Miami were a lot different than what the Whalers are used to sailing out of at Great Harbor Yacht Club. Conditions varied, with the first day of racing last Wednesday limited to just one race that was suspended before being completed due to lack of wind, while subsequent days featured high winds and large waves.

“The one thing I think that really differentiated the conditions from Nantucket to Miami was the chop,” Ferguson said. “We don’t really get much choppy conditions within the harbor, where we’re used to sailing. We really had to battle against that using body weight and really communicating with each other to make sure that we were going as fast as possible.”

Ferguson said each regatta always comes with its own different set of variables based on the venue and conditions, like different wind patterns or shifts, while Moore pointed out that your body positioning on the boat changes based on the conditions on the water.

“I definitely wasn’t used to bending my knees as much,” Moore said. “If you don’t bend your knees and there’s just a bunch of waves after each other, the bow will just absolutely plow into the water and you’ll get a lot of water, which will slow you down.”

Ferguson said the Whalers  competed in 420 boats which were very similar to the boats they use during the high school season, just with a slightly different rudder angle.

Last week’s regatta, held Wednesday through Saturday, marked the first time  any of the Whalers have been back sailing in a 420 since August. The Nantucket sailors arrived in Florida a few days ahead of time in order to get in some practice on the Miami waters.

Helping the Whalers out down in Florida was Mia-Claire Porter, a  third-grade teacher at Nantucket Intermediate School who will be joining the sailing team as an assistant coach this spring.

“She went above and beyond going down to Florida with us, having access to a boat and taking the time out  of her vacation to just come coach us day in and day-out,” Ferguson said.

Coming off a strong season last year under first-year coach Bruce Turner that saw  Nantucket finish second in the Cape & Islands League, Ferguson and the Whalers are hoping to raise the bar in 2024 as they prepare to face off against a wider range of schools.

Sports | Sailing in Marin: Ross resident set to compete at Orange Bowl Regatta

Jumping out of an Optimist into the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) dinghy is a big deal for youth sailors simply because the latter is a heck of a lot more boat.

But there comes a time for youth sailors when they age out of the Optimist (generally referred to as an Opti), the popular small single-handed dinghy that many kids cut their teeth on getting into the sport.

Tor Svendsen, after racing the Opti for some 7-8 years, when it was his time to move into the next boat chose the ILCA, formerly known as the Laser.

“When COVID happened and there was no double-handed sailing I decided to focus on the ILCA,” Svendsen, 17, said. “I generally prefer to sail alone so am really enjoying the boat.”

Svendsen, a junior at Marin Academy, is racing at the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta, hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami next week. Orange Bowl has been one of the premier youth sailing events held annually in the US for decades now with kids traveling from all over the country and out of the country to sail in a huge variety of fleets.

Svendsen’s sailed the regatta previously in the Opti and is looking forward to putting his newly honed ICLA skills to test in a big fleet.

“It’s a fun although typically light air regatta with shorter chop and oscillating breeze but it’s a nice place to sail,” he said. “I’m looking forward to racing in such a big class – there’s over 100 boats registered in ILCA-6.”

Eager to climb the steep ILCA learning curve, Svendsen’s put a ton of time in the boat this year with a long list of 2021 regattas under his belt as well as training development camps. Most recently he spent a week at the International Sailing Academy (ISA) where he was coached by British Olympian Elliott Hansen (Tokyo 2021).

“At ISA we did a lot of starting drills and a lot of boat speed drills both up and downwind,” Svendsen, a Ross resident, commented. “I learned a lot and I’m excited to see how it translates at Orange Bowl.”

Svendsen is pleased with his results this year which include a fifth place out of 50 boats at the ILCA Atlantic Coast Championship held in Hilton Head, South Carolina; he took 20th out of 80 boats at the ILCA North Americans held in San Francisco — a particularly windy regatta; and at the ILCA Midwinters West in Los Angeles he took 13th out of 60+ boats – impressive results for someone relatively new to a tough fleet.

Svendsen knows what he needs to work at, and while his upwind boat speed and tactical sense have always been pretty good strengths of his which he’s seen continue into the ILCA, he’s worked hard at improving his downwind speed.

“I used to be pretty slow downwind which is unfortunate – you need to be quick downwind in ILCA’s, but I’ve practiced a lot over the few months and have seen a lot of improvement,” Svendsen commented. “Starting was also a big weakness for me before – I’ve done a lot of starting drills, boat handling off the line and that kind of thing which is why I’m excited for Orange Bowl – to see how all that practice works out and so I can get a more definitive feel for what I need to improve on in the new year.”

Sailing dinghies at a high level requires an equal degree of fitness and Svendsen has a training plan – he works out at the gym five days a week, and he’d like to add some weight to his slim frame to be more competitive in heavy air regattas.

“I’m trying to get a little bigger over the winter, so I’ve also been focusing on eating correctly to help facilitate that process,” he smiled.

Walt Spevak is an active ILCA sailor who has been sailing since he was 9 and, specifically, the ICLA since he was 17. He’s been watching Svendsen’s progress with interest, having participated in the North American Championships alongside the youth sailor this summer.

“Tor’s improved so much, and he works hard at it,” Spevak, a Mill Valley resident, commented. “I’m now 67 and have been sailing and racing the ICLA for 50 years. The learning curve never ends as small improvements in technique can translate to a winning margin over the course of a 45-minute race.”

Julian Soto, a regular participant in the ILCA-7 class, has been coaching Svendsen this year at the San Francisco Yacht Club (SFYC) in Belvedere and is also impressed with Svendsen’s accomplishments.

“Tor’s strengths are that he is driven — he wants it,” Soto commented. “Tor practices on the off days and trains in the gym on his own. He’s also fortunate to have a supportive family and peer group.”

Svendsen’s racing aspirations for now are set in the near term with plenty of regattas scheduled in 2022. He enjoys having goals going into a regatta but they’re not necessarily result-based.

“I like to focus on a skill that I want to see if I have improved on,” he said. “Sailing on your own is self-motivating like that, it’s just you and your performance depends on you – your mistakes and success all come from your motivation and desire to win.”

Follow Svendsen and SFYC junior sailor Talia Hamlin, racing the ICLA-4 at Orange Bowl.

Bermuda Sailors Begin Orange Bowl Regatta

Bermuda sailors recently started competing in the 2021 Orange Bowl Regatta off the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Florida.

The weather conditions made it a challenging day for the organizers, so only one race in each class was able to be completed.

Sophia Dias, Sam Redburn, Noah Amaradasa, Dylan Menzies, Oliver Soares, Jack Adderley, Evan Davis, and Nina Gotfredsen started competing in the optimist fleet that was split into three groups.

Soares leads the Bermuda sailors in the fleet T49th after finishing 17th in the only race held on the day in the blue group. Amaradasa is currently T79th after finishing 27th, also in the blue group. Menzies sailing in the yellow group is T103rd after finishing day one in 35th, and crossing the line in 42nd in the purple group has Adderley T124th.

T127th is Gotfredsen after finishing 43rd in the yellow group, while Davis is T142nd after finishing the purple group in 48th. Dias is T151st after finishing 51st in the purple group, and Redburn is T175th after finishing 59th in the purple group.

Gryffyn Benevides, Fox Targett, Indira Coleman, Oliver West, and Tadhg Gotfredsen are all competing in the optimist green fleet. Targett is leading the Bermuda sailors after crossing in the line in the only race of the day in 29th; Coleman is 40th, while Gotfredsen is in 50th, and Benevides is in 57th.

Bermuda was represented in the ILCA 4 Fleet by Isaac Wickramage, Ben Redburn, Ciarra Wells, and Pharaoh Benevides, while Sergio de Frias competed in the ILCA 6 Fleet.

In the ILCA 4 Fleet, Redburn crossed the line 31st to lead the Bermuda sailors; Wickramage is in 42nd, Wells crossed the line in 53rd, Benevides finished 54th, and De Frias finished the day in 69th in the ILCA 6 Fleet.

The best golf clubs in moscow: luxury, exclusivity, and entertainment.

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

Luxury rules at the moscow yacht show.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

“Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!
