13 Best Sport Fishing Yachts of 2023

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • August 30, 2023

It is possible to fish from any type of boat, but a sportfishing yacht is purpose-built for angling aficionados to chase fish of all sizes and species, whether it’s fun fishing for mahi-mahi off the beach in South Florida or campaigning a pro-level crew from the Bahamas to Bermuda and back pursuing billfish during tournament season. The best sport-fishing yachts combine rugged, blue-water construction with performance, range, agile handling, and the comforts of luxury-yacht living. On the outside, sportfish yachts are notable for their dance-floor size cockpits for fish fighting; livewells to keep baits fresh; in-deck fish boxes to keep the catch stowed and cold; and an armada of rod holders for drift fishing, kite fishing or trolling. They also are known for big diesel horsepower and speed, sometimes north of 40-plus knots. Sportfish yachts are also known for luxurious interiors with supple leathers, granite countertops, high-end galley appliances and en suite staterooms. These are highly self-sufficient angling platforms geared for life beyond the horizon where the water is deep and the fish are big.

Top Luxury Fishing Boats

The following 13 sportfish yachts are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Hatteras GT65 Carolina : A customizable sportfish yacht with Caterpillar diesels
  • Viking Yachts 64C : An eye-watering 42 knots of fish-chasing speed boat
  • Royal Huisman Project 406 : The biggest sportfish yacht ever built
  • Rybovich 94 : A superyacht-sized angler’s dream
  • Viking 38 Open : A family-sized express sportfisherman loaded for offshore fishing
  • Bertram 61 Convertible : A tournament-ready battlewagon with a distinct look
  • Hatteras Yachts 45EX : Entry-level sportfish yacht with all the angling amenities of its larger siblings
  • Huckins 45 Sportfisherman : Built for bluewater angling with the patented and sea-taming Quadraconic hull form
  • Jarrett Bay 46 : A mid-size custom-Carolina sportfisherman with a yacht-level finish
  • Viking Yachts 92 : Designed to travel the world’s oceans chasing behemoth billfish
  • Merritt 72 : An iconic Florida boatbuilder’s high-end fishing boat
  • Bertram 35 : This 35-foot flybridge sportfish pays homage to the builder’s legendary roots.
  • Viking 54 Open : This express-style fish boat also comes in a Sport Tower and Coupe version

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina

The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina falls in the middle of the New Bern, North Carolina, boatbuilder’s three-model GT lineup, which also includes a GT59 and GT70 . This sportfish yacht has a solid-fiberglass hull bottom built for blue-water duty and comes with a variety of diesel engine options, which starts with twin 1,622 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels.

Like all Hatteras GT models, the GT65 has notable bow flare to beat back tempestuous seas as well as a high freeboard to keep decks dry in the slop. The Hatteras GT65 also represent a design evolution for the series with a “stepped-back flybridge” an element found on in earlier Hatteras models, as well as a new window treatment and hull-side vents. With yacht-level luxury on the inside and a fishing-mission design on the outside, the Hatteras Yachts GT65 is a formidable sportfish boat.

Quick Specifications

Viking yachts 64c.

With its 180-square-foot, dance-floor-size, teak cockpit, options for a fighting chair or rocket launcher, a mezzanine perched perfectly for spotting prey in the spread and enough livewell space to keep a gaggle of goggle-eye baits frisky, the 42-knot Viking Yachts 64C is built for battle with big fish. Its impressive speed, which comes via optional 2,022 hp MTU M96X V-12 diesels , ensures that the Viking 64C is likely to be first boat with lines in the water. Cruise speed: 36 knots at 80 percent engine load. (Base powerplants are twin 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels.) For the traveling tournament crew, the Viking 64C has four staterooms, including three en suite guest staterooms, plus a crew cabin with upper and lower bunks.

Royal Huisman Project 406

A 171-foot sportfisherman? Yes. That’s exactly what the six-deck, Royal Huisman’s Project 406 is. The interior and exterior design of Project 406 is from noted Dutch yacht-design firm Vripack . Vripack calls the vessel a “sportfisher on steroids.” The hull and superstructure of the supersize sportfish is Alustar aluminum, a material known for its strength and relatively light weight.

Even with six decks, Vripack has managed to create sleek lines for Project 406. It starts with a high freeboard forward that seemingly dares the ocean to approach. Transitioning from the bow, the sheerline slopes downwards in a steady cadence. The flowing sheerline resolves seamlessly at the cockpit. The vessel’s raked house and stacked deck are juxtaposed against the long profile, creating a sinewy aesthetic, which is no simple feat in this 171-footer. Add in all of the expected angling accouterments and 30-knot speed, and you have a sportfish yacht ready to chase fish around the world.

Rybovich 94

Size, speed and agility is a unique trifecta in a sportfish boat, but the 94-foot, 41-knot III Amigos from Michael Rybovich checks all those boxes as well as a few more too. The sportfish boat , designed by Patrick Knowles with naval architecture from Dusty Rybovich, is built in cold-molded mahogany. Prop pockets help keep the boat’s half-load draft down to a Bahamas-friendly 5 feet. The Rybovich 94’s impressive speed is helped by a pair of beefy 2,600 hp MTU diesels .

The owner of II Amigos also owns a 196-foot Feadship superyacht and, while he wanted the sportfish to be all business on the outside, he wanted luxury-yacht finishes on the inside.  “Subtle but telling touches are the solid doors to the staterooms; each mimics the owner’s Feadship with ¾-inch thickness. The doors close flush (each has hidden hinges), and the sound is of a Rolls-Royce door closing.”

Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish

The Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish is the builder’s entry point to its diesel-propelled sportfish boats. An owner-operator-size angling platform, the 38 Open is powered with twin 550 hp Cummins QSB6.7 diesels, which gives the sportfish boat 36-knot speed. Notable angling features on board the 38 Open include a 109-swqure-foot cockpit, complete with a mezzanine seating flanking the centerline stairs to the bridge deck as well as a laminated backing plate foe either a fighting chair or a rocket launcher. For overnight canyon trips, there is a forepeak stateroom with a double bunk as well as a single above it. Additionally, the salon’s sofa converts to a berth for guests or crew. The galley is outfitted with Corian countertops, two-burner electric cooktop, microwave/convection oven and drawer-style refrigerators and freezers. Some options include a Palm Beach Towers tuna tower and electronics packages from Atlantic Marine Electronics , both are Viking Yachts’ subsidiaries.

Bertram 61 Convertible

Bertram’s 61 Convertible leads the builder’s offshore series, which also includes a 35 Convertible and the express-style 50 Sport . Like its 50 Sport sistership, the 61 Convertible has a stepped sheerline, a nod to the legendary boatbuilder’s earlier designs. It also creates an instantly recognizable profile. The 61 Convertible is ready to run out of the box thanks to its twin 1,925 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels. Top hop is 44 knots.

When it comes to chasing fish, the 61 Convertible has 188 square feet of fish-fighting space. A 100-gallon in-transom livewell is accompanied by twin in-sole fish boxes as well as rod stowage to port and starboard. A tuna door to starboard makes bringing in that bigeye on board a breeze. (Fish not included.) The accommodations layout belowdecks includes three staterooms. There is a full-beam master stateroom amidships.

Hatteras Yachts GT45X

The Hatteras Yachts GT45X express sports twin 1,150-horsepower Cat C18 ACERT diesel engines that deliver 40-plus-knot speeds. During our sea trial, the GT45X showcased remarkable handling, gracefully leaning into turns without any loss of power from the props. Hatteras has equipped the GT45X with a custom-engineered, sound-deadening system. This feature reduces noise and vibration, ensuring a relatively quiet ride for all aboard. Inside, the yacht has a luxe sensibility with its wood sole, sumptuous leather seating, a fully equipped galley and a spacious forward stateroom. On deck, there are two comfortable helm seats, an undercounter fridge, an ice maker, an inviting L-shaped settee and a table, creating the perfect entertainment area for relaxing after a successful day of fishing. The integrated hardtop enhances visibility with its one-piece windshield and large side windows, offering optimal views of the surrounding waters. To adapt to changing weather conditions, simply install clear curtains across the bridge deck aft, transforming the GT45X into an all-season sport-fisherman. Personalization is key with Hatteras Yachts, and the GT45X offers a variety of optional features. From a bow thruster and additional stateroom to teak accents and a flybridge option, you can customize your yacht to meet your specific needs. With a simple ala carte ordering process, just select your must-have options, start the engines and have your next angling adventure.

Huckins 45 Sportfisherman

The Huckins 45 Sportfisherman starts with the Florida boatbuilder’s patented Quadraconic hull . The Huckins’ Quadraconic name derives from four conical projections that make up the bottom surface shape. The sport-fisher has a deep forefoot and some measurable flare above the waterline for good buoyancy and dry running. A single chine rises from the waterline and then descends quickly to optimize spray control. The deep-V shape forward warps to a flat running surface far aft for efficient planing and excellent roll resistance.

Power is twin 480 hp Cummins diesels, which give this sportfish boat an easy 28-knot cruise. Top speed is 35 knots, so a 30-knot cruise is easily an option. The owner of the 45 Sportfisherman we got aboard is an avid stand-up angler and set up his boat with three flush-deck insulated fish boxes with macerators, a Dometic ice maker, two 28-foot Rupp outriggers, six gunwale rod holders, saltwater and freshwater washdowns, and a four-rod rocket launcher in lieu of a fighting chair.

Jarrett Bay 46

Originally named Persistence, this Jarrett Bay 46 was built for fishing enthusiast and NASCAR driver Jeff Burton. When creating his fully custom sportfish boat, Burton noted that his vessel would be both a fishing boat and a family boat. Fishing features include an in-transom fish box, a sailfish pod, insulated fish boxes and a tuna door (sans bridge) in the cockpit. Jarrett Bay installed three rod holders in each gunwale and six more across the flybridge rail, plenty of rod room for setting up a trolling spread. With upper and lower helm stations (the latter being an owner request), the Jarrett Bay 46 also gives the skipper options if the weather goes south. The Jarrett Bay 46 has ZF pod drives with underwater exhaust paired to twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels. At a comfortable 2,000-rpm cruise, this sport-fisher makes about 26 knots while those diesels consume 41 gallons per hour. Dial it up to a top-end speed of 35 knots and consumption goes up to 58.3 gph.

Viking Yachts 92

The Viking Yachts 92 is the largest sport-fisher the New Gretna, New Jersey-based boatbuilder has ever constructed. Offered with an open- or enclosed-bridge setup, the hefty sportfish boat (displacing around 205,000 pounds) hits 37-knots-plus when powered with optional 2,600 hp MTU diesels. At 2,100 rpm, this battlewagon cruises easily at 31 knots at 78 percent engine load. Dial it back to 28 knots, and engine load is a mere 70 percent. The 92-footer is also agile thanks to the Viking Independent Programmable Electrohydraulic Rudder (VIPER) steering system, a fly-by-wire setup that lets the helmsman control each rudder individually.

From an angling perspective, the 92 has 55-foot Rupp outriggers , fish stowage large enough for a wolf pack of bigeye tuna, space for a season’s worth of baits, secured gaff stowage and enough tackle drawers to handle all the lures and terminal gear an owner could ever buy. The Viking 92 also has six staterooms to accommodate owners, guests and crew for tournament season and long-haul adventure angling.

Like some of the other names on this list, Merritt is an iconic Pompano Beach, Florida-based, custom sportfish builder with a current model lineup that includes 66-, 72- and 86-foot convertible designs. The Merritt 72 is a model that has stood the test of time, and one that owners flock to year in and year out, for its fishability, seakindly nature and the ability to tailor the layout to an owner’s angling needs.

Because these boats are custom-built, the specifics can change from one 72 to another, but 30-knot cruise speeds and nearly 40-knot top-end speeds are common in all 72s, as are massive cockpits for fighting Hemingway-worthy marlin, stout construction for chasing those fish in the blue water and superyacht-level finishes inside and outside.

The entry point into Bertram’s three-model Offshore Series⎯spanning from 35 to 61 feet length overall⎯the Bertram 35 blends a familiar profile with modern power and technology to create a 36-knot angling juggernaut. This owner-operator-sized, Michael Peters -penned, flybridge sport-fisher starts with a wave-slicing, deep-V hull form with 22 degrees transom deadrise. The form is supported by a solid fiberglass hull bottom with cored hull sides for added strength without added weight.

The 35 has a 126-square-foot cockpit ready for any fish-fighting fanatic. Bertram sets up the 35 with rod holders, a livewell, in-deck fish boxes, and a transom door for the big ones. Optional teak decking and covering boards add a custom look. Inside, the salon is accented with teak and maple Amtico soles and overhead dimmer lighting. A wainscot-style ceiling houses rod stowage for big-game gear. Power is twin 500 hp Caterpillar C7.1 diesels matched to ZF drives. At a comfortable 27.5-knot cruise at just 68 percent engine load, the Bertram 35 has a 253-nautical-mile range, making it easily canyon-capable.

Viking Yachts 54 Open

Many anglers like open- or express-style sportfish designs as they enable the captain and crew to keep in close proximity, and the Viking 54 Open , which also is offered in a Sport Coupe or Sport Tower, does just that. The 54 Open’s bridge deck has a Palm Beach-style helm on centerline, flanked by a double-wide companion seat to port and a single seat to starboard. Abaft the helm and to port is U-shaped seating with a walnut table, creating a respite from the sun on tournament day while still allowing the crew to keep an eye on the spread via the open after bulkhead. Across from that seating is an L-shaped settee.

With a focus on fishing, the 54 Open has 154 square feet of cockpit real estate. Two sets of mezzanine seats offer perches for the crew to watch the spread. Other fishing-friendly features include a transom livewell, an in-deck fish box to starboard (with an optional livewell tub), an insulated in-deck box to port, a deck plate for mounting a rocket launcher or fighting chair, cooler stowage in the mezzanine steps (a bait freezer in the steps is optional), and a tuna door. Power is either twin 1,400 hp or 1,550 hp MAN diesels. For owners who prefer a three-sided fiberglass enclosure to a clear-plastic setup—but still want an open after bulkhead—Viking offers the 54 in the Sport Tower version. The 54 Sport Coupe model closes the after bulkhead, completely protecting the bridge deck from the elements.

Best Offshore & Deep Sea Fishing Boats

best offshore fishing boats

Never fear, ambitious angler, we’re here to help. But first, let’s make sure everyone understands that “deep sea” means different things to different people who partake in different fisheries.

Commonly called “offshore fishing” or “bluewater fishing” by experienced hands, in areas where the Continental Shelf is close to land (like Florida or Hawaii) it can take place just a few miles from shore. In other places, however (such as the Northeast coast or the Gulf coast), cruising for dozens of miles at a time is often necessary. So searching for bluewater beasts may require very different types or sizes of fishing boats depending on whether you live in Miami or Montauk. That said, no matter where you plan on fishing the selection of appropriate choices will include.

3 Deep Sea Fishing Boat Types

  • Center Consoles

Sportfishing Yachts

  • Walkaround Boats

Center Console Boats

Center consoles are an excellent choice for offshore fishing because they’re among the most adaptable of all saltwater fishing boats and can be used for a wide variety of fishing methods.

  • They offer the ability to swing a rod 360-degrees around the gunwales;
  • Commonly come equipped with all the armaments necessary for tactics ranging from trolling to live-baiting to kite fishing;
  • Usually designed with sufficient fuel capacity for long runs;
  • Feature hull designs that make voyages far from shore safe and comfortable.

On the flip side of the coin, many models don’t offer much protection from the weather and salt spray, other than the console and windshield. Most also don’t have any form of sleeping accommodations and in some cases, may be a bit short in the seating department.

Explore Center Consoles

For a dedicated offshore fisherman, a sportfishing yacht is probably the ultimate angling machine.

  • Extremely long cruises of up to 100 miles are possible;
  • You can fish for days at a time in comfort (even luxury in many cases);
  • Perks like onboard air conditioning and ice makers are considered common;
  • Plus, the sheer size of sportfishing yachts allow you to go fishing when smaller boats may be forced to remain at the dock due to weather conditions.

So, why doesn’t everyone go out and buy one? As you might expect sportfishing yachts can be quite expensive to buy, operate, and maintain.

Walkaround Fishing Boats

Families that fish blue water will often opt for walkaround boats.

  • Having a cabin with a berth and a private head makes it much easier to take a break from the action or get under shelter when a rainstorm breaks out, which can be particularly important if you have kids aboard;
  • Many also have fully protected helms, which means that fishing in less than ideal weather is possible and extending your season into the late fall or winter months becomes a more realistic option.

There is, however, a price to pay in the form of fishing space, since the open bow cockpit you’d enjoy in a center console fishing boat is taken up by the cabin.

Key Features of Offshore Fishing Boats

Whether you dream of battling a big blue marlin or playing tug-of-war with a bluefin tuna , there are a few must-haves which all boats need if they’re going to be used for fishing in the deep.

  • Start with rod holders—you’ll want plenty, whether it’s to set a trolling spread or just rest a rod between casts.
  • Built-in tackleboxes are extremely valuable, as they help keep things organized and eliminate the need to carry a big box of gear back and forth from the boat every time you go fishing.
  • Raw water washdowns are considered a necessity by most offshore anglers, since deep sea fishing can get quite messy via either the bait or the catch.
  • And if you plan to keep your catch for dinner, an integrated fishbox is another must-have.

There are also a number of features that will be more or less important to you, personally, depending on the fishing methods you like to use.

  • If trolling is in the cards, having outriggers become very important and you may need a rigging station with a sink and bait tray, as well.
  • Live bait anglers will insist on having at least one livewell, and in many cases they’ll want multiple livewells so they can carry different kinds of baits on a fishing trip.
  • Those who use electric reels for deep-dropping or kite fishing will want to have 12-volt outlets under the gunwales.

Along with these built-in boat features, of course, you’ll need to stock up on lots of fishing gear. Just what you need will vary depending on where you fish and what you target, but to get the ball rolling check out Big Choices: The Basics of Big Game Fishing Equipment .

Buying a Deep Sea Fishing Boat

Aside from how the boat’s equipped, there are several attributes that separate the good deep sea fishing boats from the best ones. As you make your choices, be sure to consider:

Does the boat have enough fuel capacity to go as far as you’d like? When calculating a boat’s range, be sure to only use 90-percent of its overall fuel capacity. That extra 10-percent should always be held in reserve, so you never run out of fuel short of the inlet. Many experienced offshore anglers go even farther and use the rule “one third out, one third back, one third in reserve,” to be absolutely sure they never end up short on fuel.

When it comes to fishing miles and miles from the inlet, size does matter. This is another one of those factors that requires you to make a judgement call depending on where and how you fish. Most captains would feel comfortable running a 21-foot center console 10 or 12 miles into the ocean to go deep sea fishing on a calm, sunny day in south Florida. But trying to take that very same boat 50 or 60 miles out into the open Atlantic to reach the edge of the Continental Shelf off the coast of Maryland would be considered by many to be a dangerous over-reach.

Hull Design

A boat’s hull design plays a big role in determining its seakeeping abilities, speed, efficiency, and stability. And all of these factors will make a difference in how far you’ll want to run and the sea state you’ll consider fishing in. As a general rule of thumb, the wave-splitting deep-V hull design is considered the norm for center consoles and walkarounds. But larger sportfishing yachts are often big enough that they handle rough seas well with a semi-V (which has less of an angle in the hull) or a nearly flat bottom. Some offshore fishermen also like multihull designs , many of which tend to run very smoothly through rough water.

Is a Deep Sea Fishing Boat Right for You?

Obviously, we’ve talked about an awful lot of factors—and making a final decision will be no easy task. But we have one final bit of advice that’s as good as gold: before you pick out a boat, spend some time out on the ocean on each of the different types. Go for lots of sea trials , and test out different makes and models.

Visit your local boat show , and inspect one model after the next. Take your time, and do your research. Because once you find the ideal deep sea fishing boat for your needs, you’ll be in for the ultimate angling adventures of a lifetime.

When You Need a Bigger Boat: The Best Ocean Fishing Boats

When You Need a Bigger Boat: The Best Ocean Fishing Boats

If you’re a fan of shows like National Geographic’s Wicked Tuna or The Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch , you may have acquired a taste for the high-seas adventure of  ocean fishing .

But before you click to purchase the first sport fishing boat you find on eBay, it’s time to reel it in a bit. In order to pick the best offshore ocean fishing boat for you, it's important to consider where you’ll be fishing as well as just how much fishing you’ll be doing.

Unless you’re into Alaskan king crab fishing, you probably don’t need a boat able to take on the Bering Sea or the extreme North Atlantic. What you need is something a bit hardier than a pontoon, bass or jon boat.

Along with the traditional sport fishing boat, trawlers , center consoles and walk arounds all make excellent ocean fishing boats.

Characteristics of Ocean Fishing Boats

From fighting chairs and rod holders to transom doors, spacious decks and high-power engines, the best offshore ocean fishing boats come equipped with everything you’ll need for a day of fishing. And maybe even some you won’t need, but more is always better when it comes to fishing (Isn't that what we all tell ourselves?).

best offshore fishing yachts

  • Built-in coolers, live wells and fish boxes:  Fill with ice to store live bait and all those fish you'll be catching.
  • Fighting chairs:  Ranging from simple chairs to handcrafted fish-catching machines, fighting chairs are bolted to the deck and allow you to comfortably and safely reel in the heavyweights. Features include rod holders, footrests, padded arms and adjustable pedestals.
  • Flybridge:  You can get way up high to spot more fish. This is often the best seat on the boat if you enjoy scenic views with your sport fishing (or even if you're not fishing).
  • High-power engines:  Get out faster and power through heavy chop with a high-power engine . You can also get back to shore faster if bad weather is approaching.
  • Outriggers:  Poles that hold the fishing lines out into the water away from the boat.
  • Non-skid decks :  Who wants to slip on sea spray and fish guts? Certainly not me.
  • Rod holders:  Built-in “cups” that hold the rods as well as cutting boards that fit into the holders when you're ready to filet.
  • Spacious decks:  You’ll have plenty of room for boat gear and gadgets and reeling in fish, as well as all the friends you’ll suddenly acquire after buying an ocean fishing boat.
  • Transom doors:  These handy doors provide easier access to the boat's stern for reeling in fish.

Check Price on Amazon - Better Boat's de-salt concentrate breaks down and flushes away saltwater deposits, grime and contaminants from boats, fishing gear, dive equipment, driveways and more. It's safe for use in inboard, outboard and jet engines. If you're headed to saltwater, it's your best friend when you get back to the dock.

Locations to Use Ocean Fishing Boats

Atlantic ocean.

From Kennebunkport to the Keys, the entire East Coast offers destinations for ocean fishing in the Atlantic. I’ll mention a couple of my favorite spots, but they are by no means all-inclusive.

Tarpon, sailfish and mahi-mahi can all be caught along the Atlantic Coast near Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Florida Keys. Depending on how far offshore you’re headed, you’ll want a fast boat with stability to get through rough waves.

A sportfishing boat with towers, outriggers and fighting chairs is a great choice. If you’re planning to be out for a while, or want the option of a liveaboard boat , choose an ocean fishing boat with a cabin that has a galley, heads and sleeping quarters. The Bertram 35 makes the top of my list.

North Carolina

You can channel your Wicked Tuna aspirations by fishing for yellowfin tuna along North Carolina’s Outer Banks waterways just like the Reels of Fortune, Fishin’ Frenzy and Fish Hawk.

Oregon Inlet, conveniently located where Pamlico Sound meets up with the Atlantic Ocean, has boat ramps, gear, ice, bait, fish cleaning and much more.

The Outer Banks offers several boat ramps, including Corolla's historic Whalehead, Manteo near the Elizabeth II ship and across from Pirate’s Cove Marina beside Washington Baum Bridge.

The Hatteras GT45X Open and the Luhrs 340 Convertible top my list for Outer Banks ocean fishing boats. I especially like the molded-in flybridge stairs on the Luhrs. Balance is not my superpower, and navigating ladders while underway can be a tricky maneuver at best.

Bluefin tuna, mackerel, bluefish and striper can be caught along Maine's coast. North Atlantic Ocean waters can get rough, so a sturdy hull with hard chines is a good choice.

You might also want to look into a pilothouse boat as the New England weather can be on the chilly side. Check out the Boston Whaler 345 Conquest Pilothouse listed below.

Gulf of Mexico

The Gulf of Mexico is a gorgeous fishing destination. Not only is the water crystal clear and spiked with turquoise and sapphire tones, but you’ll also find some of the best offshore fishing in the world.

Fishing destinations include Gulfport, Mississippi; South Padre Island, Texas; and Tampa, Saint Pete and the Florida Keys.

As with any saltwater environment, an outboard motor is an advantage because it can be lifted out of the water when not running, therefore avoiding saltwater effects. Be sure to flush with fresh water and use de-salt to keep it in prime condition.

An outboard engine also offers more deck space because of the engine’s location behind the transom. Walkaround decks make it easy to, well, walk around the deck.

My top pick for a great Gulf Coast offshore fishing boat is the Grady White Freedom 275 Dual Console or the Sailfish 320 Express.

Pacific Ocean

The Pacific Northwest is a rugged and beautiful fishing destination. Swordfish, bluefin tuna, brown rockfish and Pacific mackerel can be found in the Pacific Ocean along the coasts of California, Oregon and Washington.

With multiple livewells, insulated fish boxes, side-entry doors and a spacious cockpit, the Sea Hunt Gamefish 30 is my pick for a Pacific Ocean fishing boat.

Locations to use Saltwater Bay Fishing Boats

Virginia and Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay is a popular spot to fish for flounder, rockfish, striped bass and cobia, which is apparently a challenging fish to catch.

Chesapeake Bay water conditions can range from clear and peaceful to ocean-like and choppy. I've seen pontoon boats on the Chesapeake Bay!

The Boston Whaler 270 Dauntless has multiple rod holders, twin Mercury outboard engines and livewells, as well as the reliability and durability that make Boston Whaler famous.

Locations for Great Lakes Offshore Fishing

Even though “lake” is the name, these waters show off their ocean spirit in size and scope. Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and the rest of the gang are popular playgrounds for locals and visitors to Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

Chinook salmon, walleye, lake trout and northern pike are just a few of the fish found in the Great Lakes.

A rugged fishing boat with some cabin protection is in order, as the Great Lakes can get quite choppy. Check out the Albemarle 32 Express below.

Best Ocean Fishing Boat Models

Whether you’re looking for a strictly utilitarian fishing boat, or something with versatility for the whole family, there's bound to be a boat out there with your name on it.

Here are several of my favorites to get the ideas rolling.

best offshore fishing yachts

The Bertram 35 combines an outrigger's fishing capabilities with a spacious deck, rod storage and a flybridge with  below-deck practicality and luxury for family or crew members.

You can get offshore quickly with speeds up to 40 knots. The deep-V hull can easily take on the waves.

Luhrs 340 Convertible Sportfish

best offshore fishing yachts

Luhrs absolutely wins my vote with its molded-in flybridge stair design (replacing the metal ladders found on most boats). It has a large mounted-in fishbox, a transom gate, an insulated cooler box, a livewell and a bait prep station. Besides all that, it’s just a beautiful boat.

Hatteras GT45X Open

best offshore fishing yachts

With its sleek lines, multiple rod holders and tower, anglers and cruisers love the Hatteras. I’m particularly impressed with its storage space (a great amenity whether you’re stowing stuff for fishing or a day with the kids).

Boston Whaler 345 Conquest Pilothouse

best offshore fishing yachts

I do most boating in warm weather. But in a cold climate, I'd pick the Whaler Pilothouse for its fully enclosed windshield and cockpit, hardtop and aft bulkhead.

Grady White Freedom 275 Dual Console

best offshore fishing yachts

Dual consoles are my favorite type of recreational boat. Whether cruising or sport fishing, they're great for fresh or saltwater. Sunbathers can hang out on the bow seating while the anglers cast a line off the aft deck.

The Grady White Freedom has a large livewell, a 165-quart insulated box and ample rod holders. The swim platform and transom door are great for anglers, swimmers or divers.

Sailfish 320 Express

best offshore fishing yachts

With a 30-gallon livewell, two tackle stations and multiple rod holders - combined with a serious high-performance hull - the Sailfish 320 Express is a great choice for saltwater bays, the Gulf or the ocean.

In addition to providing shade, the hardtop has speakers and a spotlight. Inlets in the Keys aren’t always well-marked, and that spotlight will be worth its weight in gold.

Sea Hunt Gamefish 30

best offshore fishing yachts

Center consoles make great ocean fishing boats. I enjoy the walkaround factor on this boat style.

Features on the Sea Hunt Gamefish include an insulated 250-gallon fishbox, cockpit and bow bolsters, side-entry doors and an optional battle station leaning post.

Boston Whaler 270 Dauntless

best offshore fishing yachts

Whalers always seem to pop up when talking about the best offshore ocean fishing boats. And with good reason. They’re rugged, stable and reliable.

The 270 Dauntless has an optional hardtop with rod holders. A top cover is one of my first requirements on any boat. That sun can get hot!

In addition, under the aft seat and at the console front, there's storage for rods, buckets, cleaning products , boat fenders , gear and what-not.

A freshwater shower is a nice feature for washing off saltwater after a day of fishing.

Albemarle 32 Express

best offshore fishing yachts

Outriggers, towers and graceful lines give the Albemarle 32 Express that classic offshore fishing vessel appearance.

Fishing features include a non-skid deck and cockpit, mounting for a fighting chair, a tackle center with drawers, twin 50-gallon fish boxes, a bait prep center and freshwater washdowns.

The cabin is plush enough for a weekend or several days out on the water.

Hopefully, this has helped you decide what features you need, or want, in an ocean fishing boat. Now get out there and catch some fish!

Best Offshore Fishing Boat Brands By Size and Region

28th oct 2023 by lenny rudow.

Rightboat logo

There are many different types of fishing boats out there, but if you plan on prowling the offshore fishing grounds for pelagic species like marlin and tuna, you need a boat designed specifically for the task. So, which are the best offshore fishing boats? Which are the best small offshore fishing boats, and which are the best large ones? Let’s dive right in.

Best Types of Offshore Fishing Boats

Before we get specific about stand-out brands, we need to remember that there are a number of different types of offshore fishing boats. Center consoles are the most popular when it comes to the best offshore fishing boats under 30 feet, but anglers in search of the best offshore family fishing boat may be better served by a boat with a cabin or a dual-console model. Those with budgets that are more or less unlimited may even choose a convertible. And fishermen who treasure a smooth ride above all else may well opt for a catamaran fishing boat . The bottom line? The best types of offshore fishing boats for each person will vary depending on their specific needs. So before you even begin shopping, it’s a good idea to make a list of your priorities and nail down exactly what sort of performance, layout, and amenities will fit the bill for you, personally.

Best Offshore Fishing Boats with Cabins

Anglers who plan to overnight on their boat will naturally want a cabin. Families with small children and people who plan to fish in inclement weather may decide a cabin is a must-have, too. Finding the best offshore fishing boats with a cabin can present a significant challenge, especially for anglers on a budget, but these top picks are sure to show up on your radar.

Boston Whaler

This brand is best known for building unsinkable boats, by molding a hull and a deck and then pumping the voids between them full of high-pressure foam to create a fiberglass-foam-fiberglass sandwich. They are indeed unsinkable, adding a significant layer of safety and confidence to long runs offshore. And they have three offshore-capable cabin boats in their lineup: the 285 Conquest, 325 Conquest, and 405 Conquest. All are rigged for serious fishing, too, with integrated livewells, rod holders, fishboxes, and more.

Parker Offshore

Parker makes a lineup of boats for inshore and offshore, with both center consoles and cabin boats. Three in their Sport Cabin lineup are large enough for offshore duty. All have the stout construction, voluminous fuel capacity, and basic fishing features to get the job done. And unlike some small cabin boats, these are fully enclosed cabins with aft bulkheads. Parker also offers a second station in the cockpit, so you can control the boat from both inside and outside the cabin.

Viking Yachts

In the “money is no object” department, we have Viking Yachts. Their entire lineup is suited to offshore fishing, and the smallest boat they build is the 38 Billfish convertible – which will seem quite large to most anglers. At the opposite end of the spectrum, they offer a 90-footer, which qualifies as a fishing superyacht. If offshore fishing boats with niceties like private staterooms, satellite TV, and air conditioning strike your fancy and your checkbook knows no bounds, it’s time to check out a Viking.

Best Offshore Family Fishing Boats

Taking the entire family offshore fishing puts some different demands on the vessel. You need a certain level of comfort, some protection from the elements, and in most cases the ability to use the boat for things other than offshore fishing, too. Just what you need personally depends on the makeup of your family, but all of these choices are great ones.

Grady-White

Grady-White boats are among the most popular fishing boats on the water, thanks to their combination of family-friendly features and design along with a healthy dose of fishing acuity. A number of their models are suitable for offshore duty, including center consoles up to 45’, dual consoles to 36’7”, and cabin models up to 36’7”. Grady-Whites are also known for their excellent seakeeping abilities, thanks in no small part to their variable-degree deadrise hull designs.

Pursuit makes a model line called the Sport Center Console, which places a heavy emphasis on comfort along with fishability. All of the models in this line, which stretches from 25’8” to 43’9”, are equipped with all the goodies anglers need. But they also boast heads in the consoles and on the larger models, complete cabins with berths, galleys, and settees. All feature plenty of luxury seating along with creature comforts like freshwater showers and stereo systems, and all but the smallest have big loungers as well.

This new builder has a pair of models which offer unusual utility to the family. These boats don’t fit neatly into any one mold, as they’re a combination center console and cabin boat, which Solara has dubbed “center walkarounds.” They have a centered console and helm, which stretches all the way to the port side of the boat but leaves a walkaround side-deck to starboard. That greatly enhances the space inside the console cabin, which on the 25’ model has a berth and head, and on the 31’ model includes a forward berth, a fully enclosed head compartment, and a galley.

Best Small Offshore Fishing Boats

Different sized boats are more or less capable of offshore fishing in different parts of the nation, because in Florida you may need to run for just a couple of miles but in New Jersey an 80-mile run to the fishing grounds isn’t out of the question. So, how small is too small for offshore? It depends on many variables beyond geography, like the weather conditions, the captain’s experience level, and the condition of the boat itself. That said, in areas where small boats can get offshore during the right weather window, these picks are among the best small offshore fishing boats.

This builder offers plenty of big boats, but their 20- to 24-foot offerings are what lands them on this list. They’re built with the PermaGrid fiberglass stringer system, a high-density composite transom, and a variable-degree deadrise hull that handles the seas far better than most boats of the same size. Even the smallest, the 208CC, carries a whopping 87 gallons of fuel and cruising at 30 mph, can run for almost 300 miles. The fishing features are all in place, too, ranging from livewells, to fishboxes, to rodholders.

Edgewater boats for sale

This builder’s lineup of bay and hybrid bay boats ranges from 22’5” to 27’0”, and although they’re not dedicated offshore boats even the 22- and 24-footers prove competent for popping through the inlet on days when the wind isn’t pumping. The smallest, the 2200, carries 65 gallons of fuel, and rigged with an F150 Yamaha outboard has over 250 miles of range at cruising speed. And Pathfinder’s vacuum-infused stepped hulls provide a ride that shines offshore every bit as much as inshore.

Regulator Marine

Regulator has a lineup that runs all the way up to a 41-footer, but they make our list for one single model: the Regulator 23. With a wave-splitting 24 degrees of transom deadrise and a hefty 7,120-pound displacement, this is one of the smallest dedicated offshore fishing machines around. And it has a well-deserved reputation for proving competent beyond virtually all other boats of its LOA. It’s also a serious fishing machine, with two 87-gallon integrated fishboxes, multiple leaning post tackle station options, a 46-gallon livewell, and more.

Best East Coast Offshore Fishing Boats

Priorities can differ quite a bit along the East Coast, especially from north to south, since travel time to and from the offshore grounds differs quite a bit between places like Florida and New York. That said, just about all East Coast offshore anglers need fishing boats that can handle diverse tactics ranging from trolling rigged baits to live bait fishing.

Contender boats are known for having aggressive deep-V hulls that can chop through the rolling waves at high speeds without beating up the boat’s passengers. Originally popular in Florida in particular, their appeal has expanded up the coast and Contenders are now found the length of the Atlantic seaboard. The company’s extensive model range goes from 24 feet all the way up to 43’10”, and all also feature voluminous fuel capacities for extended runs offshore.

Invincible Boats

Invincible is one of those rare manufacturers that builds both monohull boats and powercats. The range goes from 33 to 46 feet, includes center consoles and pilothouse versions, and each and every model is designed to be a serious offshore fishing platform. Tremendous livewell capacity, huge number of rodholders, and massive fishboxes are all part of the mix.

Invincible boats for sale

World Cat boats builds, as one might guess from the name, a lineup of power catamarans. They range from the 235CC hybrid bay boat to the 400 CC-X. The offerings include a mix of center consoles and dual consoles, any of which can be run offshore and used for fishing. Serious offshore anglers, however, will be most interested in the center console CC-X models, which come fully armed for battling pelagics. The highpoint of these boats is, without question, the smooth powercat ride those twin hulls deliver.

Best Gulf Coast Offshore Fishing Boats

Gulf Coast anglers generally make exceptionally long runs to reach the offshore grounds, often running to oil platforms many hours from port. As a result, fuel capacity and high-speed cruising are critical elements. Since those runs are so long some Gulf anglers like to make overnight trips, which makes having some form of berth belowdecks a big perk.

This relatively small builder has a range of 22- to 39-footers, all of which are designed solely for fishing. They have the gear, fuel capacity, and deep-V hulls to take on long fishing trips in the Gulf, but what really sets them apart from much of the competition is that they tend to have few frills and niceties. That helps Cape Horn undercut the competition’s price, so serious anglers who aren’t worried about goodies like luxury loungers and air conditioning can get the most LOA bang for their buck.

Freeman Boatworks

Freeman builds a line of powercats that’s incredibly popular along the Gulf coast, especially among charter captains. They offer amazingly smooth rides that most monohulls can’t match, along with hat-stripping-fast cruising speeds. In fact, much of their model line is capable of cruising in the 40- to 50-mph range and can hit blistering speeds in excess of 70 mph. Each of their boats, which range from 28’9” to 47’0”, are also rigged with just about every fishing accouterment ever invented.

Yellowfin Yachts

Another boat builder known for crafting speedy creations is Yellowfin, which has a line of offshore-capable boats from 26 to 54 feet. Larger models have cabins inside the console with comforts like heads, berths, and air conditioning, and no matter the size these boats are rigged out with the best in multiple livewell systems, fishing rod holders, and massive fuel tanks.

Best West Coast Offshore Fishing Boats

West Coast offshore anglers have very different needs depending on if they’re located in the north or the south, much like those along the Atlantic coast. In southern areas long runs into the Pacific are the norm, and often the same sorts of boats found in the Gulf or North Atlantic are ideal. In the northern areas, however, where there are rocky shores and islands to contend with, anglers will often be looking for the best offshore aluminum fishing boats as opposed to standard-issue fiberglass models.

Defiance boats are relatively small for offshore action (their largest model is the Guadalupe 290 XL), but these are a favorite among southern California anglers for their full pilothouse designs which provide all-weather protection. They also feature huge fuel capacities and wide-open aft cockpits.

Located in Clarkston, Washington, the entire Duckworth line is welded aluminum and they have three models appropriate for this conversation: the 26 Offshore, 28 Offshore, and 30 Offshore XL. All have a full pilot house for offshore fishing in difficult weather conditions, and they even offer diesel stove/heater options so you can keep fishing all winter long. Anyone searching for the best offshore aluminum fishing boats around is sure to run across this manufacturer.

With a lineup of 22- to 32-foot fiberglass pilothouse-style cabin boats, Sea Sports are another popular line built in Washington State. What sets these apart from the crowd is their cabins, which extend aft a bit more than most to provide additional interior space. While this does reduce cockpit space, it also gets you a lot more cabin for the LOA as compared to most competitors.

There are so many different boatbuilders out there that the search for the best offshore boat brands is no small endeavor. But if you plan to point the bow for distant horizons in search of pelagic predators, it’s a search you will undoubtedly be making. We can’t say if any of these boat manufacturers offer the ideal model for you, personally, but hopefully this roundup will help you get started finding the perfect boat for your needs.

Here’s what our customers have to say: “Holy crap do I love my 35 IFC with the Merc 300 V8’s on the back. We ran her down to Key Largo the other day, snorkeled all day, got lunch at Shipwrecks Bar and Grill, and ran back. Cruised between 40 and 45 mph, mostly around 42. So smooth it’s nuts. Burned maaaayyybe 40 gallons for the whole day. As we cruised the dashboard was telling us between 1.7 and 1.8 mpg, but I’m pretty sure we cruised more than 40 miles and burned between 35 and 40 gallons, no more. So… suffice it to say that you guys have absolutely crushed it and changed the game here. Fantastic work”! – Alan, Hull #4

The system is a fixed setup, there is nothing to operate and there are zero moving parts.

The IFC Technology in effect smooths out rough seas by allowing the boat to run from wave crest to wave crest at a relatively smooth and stable attitude. The IFC System creates lift which help to in effect “Carry” the hull higher in the water. The system acts as a set of wings carrying the boat at speed, keeping the hull from having to follow each wave across its entire contour. In other words the surface of the waves have less effect on the hull as the IFC system is lifting the boat. Additionally, the aerodynamic lift created by the catamaran hulls creates even more lift at the bow of the boat, keeping the nose high and preventing the “slamming” or sneezing found in other catamaran hulls.

No, you don’t. The foils are flush mounted to the bottom of the keels of each sponson (as well as up in the tunnel.) At its centerline the main foil of the IFC system is only slightly lower than the keel line. The boat will easily load onto a standard catamaran trailer. There is no big contraption hanging way down under the boat.

Remember, the foils are INTERNAL to the tunnel. At its lowest point the main foil is only slightly lower than the hull and is higher than the props. Because of this the odds of striking the foils are extremely low. The boat is designed to be lifted by the foil. The structural integrity of the foil system is such that the weight of the boat could be supported many times over by the foil. As such, if you did somehow manage to strike the foil on something EXTREMELY SUBSTANTIAL, like a stone shoal, the likely outcome is that you may (in a very worst case scenario) bend or break a foil wing. If that were to happen, you could still operate the boat to port with the remaining foils. The IFC foils are made from a very high-grade stainless steel and designed to meet or exceed relevant guidelines for impact and strength.

As water travels through the tunnel and around the foil, a tremendous vortex is created. This force keeps most debris from being trapped in the tunnel or around the foil. Between the pressure of the air moving through the tunnel, and the vortex created in the water, the tunnel and foils will stay clean and clear.

The outboards of the 35 IFC are mounted on a slight outward angle to place the propellers properly to maximize the thrust and flow efficiency created as the water travels through the tunnel and around the foils. This mounting also helps the boat to lean into a corner, much like a monohull.

Firstly, we’d ask, “Why would you want to?” But the short answer is no. IFC is an integrated system that is integral to the design of the boat.

The short answer is that boats with technology similar to IFC have been in use for many years, but not in the recreational market. Commercial and Military applications are quite prevalent. The initial design of a hull and system like this is quite complex and can be cost prohibitive. We at Insetta feel the gains in efficiency, speed, range and ride quality far outweigh the initial design and build cost.

Upon deciding to build a foiling Cat, Insetta assembled a team of naval Architects and Marine Engineers to refine an existing and proven design. Using their own state of the art construction techniques, Insetta brought an application specific version to the fiberglass Center Console market.

Why did Insetta Boatworks decide to build a boat with IFC?

For decades, Hydrofoil power boats have proven to be the most efficient craft for a variety of offshore operations.

While pursuing a B.S. in physics in 1960, Victor Insetta was employed doing anti-submarine research that utilized high speed Deep-V patrol boats equipped with hydrofoils. Their ability to pursue submarines at high speed, operate safely offshore, and, being foil borne: allowed their hull to run clear of the water avoiding direct hits from torpedoes. Decades later, Vic and his family rode comfortably on hydrofoil ferries in Italy, flying over white capped waves in the bay of Naples.

In 2017, The Insetta 45 was chosen to be the official chase boat of the America’s cup! Four 45’ Insetta’s catamarans were shipped to Bermuda to assist at various cup events. Sailboats, competing from several countries, were catamarans with hydrofoils ! The Insetta 45’s ran parallel to these “foiling sail cats” to assist with TV coverage. The sailing cats were traveling at speeds approaching 50 mph, 2 ½ times the wind speed . Efficient … you bet . They could also turn on a dime at over 40 mph…

It became obvious: that a foiling cat would make a great offshore outboard power boat… Many foil power boat designs in the past, had wide foils that stuck out the sides, increasing their beam and draft. It made them difficult to dock, and they couldn’t operate in shallow waters. Joel Shine (chief operating officer) of Insetta Boatworks found a catamaran design that had hydrofoils mounted in the tunnel, (that location between the tunnel walls actually improves their efficiency), and does not add to its draft. Further improvements could be added by using our ultra-light high strength infused composite construction.

Joel, Vic and our technical staff reviewed the foiling cat’s initial specifications and performance data, and then sea trialed two foiling cats with internal hydrofoils. Our staff includes a second physicist and pilot… Glen Dobbs. We are all active boaters and we determined we would build our version of a foiling outboard powered cat. We contacted a Naval architect, who designed several successful foiling power cats . He is now a member of our technical staff.

Our 35 “foiling cat” design has set the standard for Foil-Assisted Sportfishing boats. The hull, foils, materials, and engines are synergistically combined, to provide: unrivaled high-speed cruising efficiency , and provide safe offshore handling, with unimpeded shallow water operation, including beaching, without foils or props contacting the bottom.

2023 Boat Buyers Guide: Center-Consoles

  • By Jim Hendricks

Center-console offshore

The center-console is unbeatable when it comes to effective big-water fishing. The basic concept emerged decades ago, providing 360 degrees of access to the rail, making the timeless design a natural for fishing. Today’s models are more advanced in construction and utility, representing the pinnacle of refinement and engineering.

The effectiveness of today’s offshore center-consoles, ranging from about 22 feet to more than 60 feet in length, is reflected in their skyrocketing popularity. Sales of these fishing machines have boomed, and waiting lists have grown to a year or more among the most popular brands. But the wait time allows careful consideration of options, and often customization, to get your boat powered and equipped the way you want it.

There are so many cool features integrated into today’s offshore center-console fishing boats that we couldn’t possibly cover them all here. But let’s take a look at just few of the elements that have vaulted these boats to the top of the saltwater food chain.

Center-console tournament fishing

Today’s offshore center-console fishing boats ride atop one of three hull types: conventional deep-V monohulls; stepped monohulls; and multihulls, often called cats, short for catamarans. Some multihulls can also have steps. How do you decide which hull type is best for you? First of all, each is superb in its own right, providing able and seaworthy platforms for chasing pelagic species such as mahi, marlin, swordfish, tuna, and wahoo, as well bottomfishing for grouper, snapper, and more. Here’s what you can expect from each type of offshore hull.

Deep-V monohulls with transom deadrise angles of anywhere from 20 to 25 degrees represent the most traditional design, adhered to by highly respected brands such as Grady-White, Regulator Marine Scout and Yellowfin  A sharp entry, crisp keel and careful placement of chines deliver a running surface in a planing hull that knifes through rough seas to produce a smooth ride and stability when running or trolling.

A step-hull is a modification of a deep-V, with cross-longitudinal steps, or notches, molded into the hull. These steps introduce a thin layer of aerated water under the hull to reduce friction, and increase lift, speed and fuel efficiency on plane. There are some caveats. For one, the aerated water can interfere with sonar signals, so transducers need to be installed in front of the steps.  Second, if you trailer your boat, make sure the bunks are properly designed to support the step-hull.

Catamaran hulls offer two sponsons, each of which is thinner than a monohull. Often designed to operate best as semidisplacement hulls, they knife through the water—unless enough horsepower is applied to get them planing on the surface—more easily than a single, wider hull.

Tip: Multihull center-consoles offer a smooth ride and increase beam for greater fishing room. The wide footprint helps increase stability at rest or when trolling, an ideal choice for fishing with a large crew.

Center-console with multiple engines

There was a time when triple outboards raised admiring looks. But center-consoles keep growing in length and beam, and with that comes the frequent need for quadruple and quintuple outboards. Triples hardly raise eyebrows today. The goals of multiple outboards is to boost horsepower and speed, and offer redundant power for long trips offshore. Don’t expect every added engine to bring an equal addition of speed. As motors are added, so are load and drag, and beyond a point, the added motors have diminishing returns.

To improve efficiency for larger boats Mercury Marine and Yamaha Marine are building bigger motors. For instance, Yamaha’s 425 hp XTO V-8 outboard offers outstanding performance in pairs when pitted against triple 300s. Mercury’s 600 hp Verado V-12 is the most powerful outboard to date, replacing four 300s with two Verado 600s. The result is less drag, greater fuel economy and range, and more-exciting top speeds.

Tip: When ordering a boat, don’t skimp on horsepower, thinking you’ll get better fuel economy with less power. In fact, the opposite might occur because less horsepower working harder can burn more fuel.

Decks on today’s center-console offshore fishing machines have been engineered for optimal angling. The best ones are level from stern to the bow area, eliminating tripping hazards between the two. This enables anglers to sprint from the transom livewell to the bow to cast a bait to feeding fish or to work a hooked fish along the rail without tripping on a nasty midship step.

Nonskid decks help ensure traction and safety in wet conditions and sloppy seas. Nonskid treatments include a molded-in diamond pattern or a gritlike texture to channel away water and ensure grip. Teak soles are effective nonskid surfaces. Closed-foam EVA nonskid from brands such as SeaDek become more popular as an option every year. It’s available in a wide variety of colors and designs, and offers a soft cushion layer underfoot.

Tip: When ordering your new boat, ask about options for decking such as an available teak sole or EVA nonskid. It’s also always easier to have these options installed during the build and fold it into the financing than to do so after the sale.

Livewell with bait

As live-bait fishing has grown increasingly popular, livewells have become increasingly important aboard offshore center-console fishing machines. Transom bulkheads and leaning-post modules (prime positions for livewells) are often designed with the goal of maximizing live-bait capacity. Some boats boast two or more wells in the transom bulkhead and another one in the leaning post, with capacities as large as 50 gallons each. Still other boats have a plumbed well under the cockpit sole, known as a deck well, to carry as much live bait as possible.

Oval or round livewell interiors have proved to be gentle on liveys, and light-blue interior walls are believed to help comfort bait. Lighting helps to see the bait at night. Many offshore center-consoles feature pump boxes in the bilge area that bleed off air picked up by the livewell pump. The result is the delivery of pure, nonaerated water that enhances baits’ comfort and survival.

Tip: The best livewells can be pressurized once the top lid is sealed. When completely full of water, this eliminates sloshing, which can injure bait. Ask about this when you order your new boat.

Anglers fighting fish

Rod Stowage

There is an axiom among veteran offshore anglers: You can never have too much rod stowage. Boatbuilders have devised ways to incorporate abundant rod stowage on board, keeping a wide array of tackle convenient for access when conditions call for changing tactics.

Gunwale rod holders are flush-mounted rod holders used for trolling, drifting, kite-fishing and more. Many new boats have rod holders around the entire gunwale, including shotgun holders on the transom. Work with your dealer or boatbuilder to ensure that you have plenty of these rod -holders where you want them and at the best angles on your new boat.

Undergunwale rod racks stow rods horizontally but are usually limited to three or four rods on each side. New boats with side doors also limit undergunwale rod racks.

Vertical rod holders on the sides of the center console and/or the coffin box are a good option, and rod stowage below the console is another option.

Add rocket-launcher racks to your T-top and leaning post. The best arrangement of these racks of rod holders on a T-top enables you and your crew to reach them without climbing on something.

Taking your time and working with your boatbuilder or dealer will ensure that your center-console is equipped to meet your angling style and needs.

Tip: When ordering your new boat, inquire about lockable rod stowage to securely stow some outfits inside the center console or in special onboard compartments.

Center of Attention

Today’s offshore center-console fishing machines come in a wide range of sizes, styles and hull designs, but the common denominator among them all is a central helm console. This serves two key functions. For one, it offers anglers unfettered access to the entire perimeter around the boat, including easy-to-navigate walkways aside the helm console. This allows crew to quickly traverse fore and aft to cast to fish or follow a hooked one. Second, a central helm area gives the skipper an unimpeded 360-degree line of sight to keep tabs on the action no matter where it occurs, and to easily move in and out of the helm area when needed.

Tanks for the Range

The nature of bluewater fishing often calls for the ability to make long runs to offshore fishing grounds. That, in turn, calls for the fuel capacity to make it out there, perhaps troll all day, and when done fishing, safely return to port. So, pay close attention to fuel capacity of the new boat you’re considering to ensure that it will serve your needs. Some models offer an option for additional fuel capacity, which you might also consider.

Editor Says: While in the past most center-console boats came with clear acrylic windshields or clear vinyl enclosures to protect the helm area from wind blast and spray, an increasing number of today’s center-console models feature three-sided, full-height tempered-glass windshields that are integrated into the T-top frame. Not only are these more durable, but they also do away with the distortion inherent to acrylic and vinyl. -Jim Hendricks, Staff Editor, Boating and Fishing Group

Small Boats for Offshore Fishing

  • By Sport Fishing Staff
  • Updated: March 28, 2024

Small boat fishing offshore

What is the minimum size boat for offshore fishing? The answer depends on who you ask. The challenge and your budget are the two biggest reasons for fishing from a small offshore boat. Many cite the unique satisfaction of taking on the ocean to fish it on their own terms, knowing they have the boat, the knowledge and the ability to get out there, catch some good fish and get back.

“There’s definitely the excitement of being out there in a small boat where you’re in control and doing your own thing,” said Angelo Cuanang, a West Coast offshore fishing writer and expert who regularly fishes off San Francisco Bay. He’s done so for many years — all in a 17-foot Boston Whaler Montauk. Being unsinkable, the Whaler is one of the best small boats for ocean fishing.

One school of thought from skilled mariners actually considers a smaller hull advantageous in large swells. Tom King, once a professional mate in Massachusetts, for years made the 20-plus-mile run to fish Stellwagen Bank aboard his 19-foot Midland (“a Nova Scotia-style hull,” he said, with a very high bow and very low freeboard). “We came home riding on top of the big seas like an eggshell, while much bigger sport-fishing boats were having a tough time rolling in the swells.”

For purposes of this discussion, let’s focus on saltwater fishing boats with a minimum size ranging from 17 to 22 feet in length overall (LOA). A boat this size has an element of responsiveness that much larger hulls lose. In addition to being a criterion for offshore fishing, this size range also offers the best small boats for rough seas. Of course, rough seas are relative, and distance from shore often dictates the decision to go or not go.

Offshore Boating Benefits of Small Fishing Boats

Besides the challenge, downsized boats are less expensive and easy to tow on the road than king-size boats. Small boats can also be easier to handle and dock in tight quarters, though features such as joystick controls on larger boats are making low-speed maneuvers easier for skippers of large boats.

Start comparing costs of purchase, insurance, moorage or storage, maintenance and so on for a 30-foot center-console with those of a 22-footer. Then of course there are fuel costs. At today’s prices, a day fishing a 30-footer with twin 300 hp outboards can cost you in the high hundreds of dollars, if not more than $1,000. But you can run offshore and troll all day in a boat such as the Robalo R222 (21 feet 6 inches LOA) or Sea Chaser 22 HFC (21 feet 9 inches LOA) with a single 200 or 250 hp outboard for a few hundred or less.

Lots of anglers trailer their boats 50 to 100 miles at the drop of a hat. Compare hauling a double- or triple-axle trailer behind a ¾- to 1-ton pickup versus a lighter, single- or double-axle trailer behind a half-ton pickup — and there’s even more economy.

Small-Boat Knowledge, Ability and Common Sense

There’s no federal regulation stating that “Thou shalt not take thy boat and go (offshore),” and in fact the Coast Guard only has authority in a few places to prevent boaters from going where they want, a Coast Guard spokesman said. To go or not to go is not the question. Rather, focus on knowing your small boat, recognizing when to go or not, and with what gear and preparation.

Accident reports often retell scenarios where anglers in small boats perished before the Coast Guard could reach them. Often these are cases where knowing the boat and having the right equipment could have saved lives. Experience often makes a major difference when it comes to safety. Anglers who know what the ocean can dish out and respect that power choose to err on the side of caution, and do not scrimp on safety gear .

Many who skipper such mighty mites far from land tend to be independent by nature. Still, many make it a point to travel offshore with another boat — known as “buddy boating”— when possible, small or large, which in effect offers a second engine.

Whether or not you have a buddy going with you, be sure to file a float plan before you leave. That can be as simple as making sure someone back on land knows when you plan to depart and return, and where — in general — you expect to fish.

The Right Boat: Moderate Vees and Hard Chines

What is the best small boat for offshore fishing? There are plenty of 17- to 22-footers for fishing bays, channels or flats. But if you plan to run offshore, you’ll need to investigate construction, quality and design.

That said, some bay boats such as the Pathfinder 2200 TE (22 feet 2 inches LOA) or Sea Born FX22 Bay Sport (21 foot 9 inches LOA) offer offshore fishing capability , as well as the ability to sneak into shallow inshore waters.

Still, there can be no doubt that with the specialized demands of offshore fishing, not all small hulls are created equal. When it comes to hull design, opinions vary — suggesting competent small hulls might come in more than one style.

A modified V rather than the deep V common on larger center consoles ranks as the top choice among experts looking for the optimal small planing hull for big water. While the steeper deadrise angle of up to 26 degrees at the transom offers the softest ride through waves, an angle in the 17- to 20-degree range proves more stable. That way you still get some damping effect from the V but also get some benefit of lateral stability.

Fuel capacity becomes a serious consideration for any small boat heading offshore. On the minus side: Many small boats have built-in tanks and some provide space only for portables. On the plus side: Light boats with small outboards can go all day on amazingly little fuel. Once you pick a boat, know its range and always allow for at least a 15 percent reserve.

A small but important point: marine battery placement. Batteries should ride forward, beneath the console, rather than at the transom, where they can get wet and add unnecessary weight.

One other essential element of small boat construction that becomes particularly important offshore is flotation. Positive flotation is required for certification by the National Marine Manufacturers Association in boats less than 20 feet, but the best hulls are fully filled with foam, and the reasons should be obvious. In an emergency, water can force air out of a hull or sides but not out of foam. A light hull gains little weight (always a factor) but considerable strength and rigidity from foam.

Water In, Water Out

A small boat easily takes on spray and, on rough days, some green water as well. That’s when scuppers become critical. (This assumes that no angler without a death wish would be offshore in a boat that’s not self-bailing.) The scuppers must be able to drain water as fast as it comes into the hull — if not, you’ll soon be playing submarine.

Transom height and design also play key roles in keeping water out of small boats. A small outboard-powered boat faces trouble fast once enough ocean water enters and runs to one side or the other in heavy seas. To help avoid that, look for small offshore boats with a full transom. A cut-out transom might work with a really good, generous motorwell. Worst case for offshore: a low, cut-out transom with no well. If that describes your boat, stick to the bay.

The Right Offshore Boating Equipment

No small boat, however seaworthy and stable, belongs offshore — ever — if it’s not properly equipped. The most major piece of equipment to consider is your outboard engine . A traditional preference among blue-water anglers has been twin or even triple outboards for safety. However, adding a second engine for the small boater might be either cost-, design- or weight-prohibitive. Fortunately, today’s outboard engines are more reliable than ever.

An EPIRB and PLB will keep a boater safe offshore

When feasible, a small auxiliary engine (aka kicker) is a great addition since it can get you home in a pinch — but, again, it may not be worth the additional weight on the stern of a 17- to 22-footer.

Additional key safety equipment to carry when fishing offshore includes the following:

Fixed-Mount VHF Radio — Fundamental and essential. Fixed-mount radios offer a range of 15 to 20 miles while handhelds only reach out 3 to 8 miles. All new VHFs, by law, come with Digital Selective Calling, which instantly sends a distress call to authorities anywhere in the world. Be sure that you set up your DSC calling feature before leaving port. Cell phones are popular everywhere, including offshore, and offer some backup. But these can’t substitute for a VHF in a pinch since users might not find coverage in all areas offshore, and a phone call does not immediately summon on-water help. Mate your VHF radio to a tall (8-foot) VHF antenna for the range necessary when fishing offshore.

GPS Plotter/Sounder — As critical for navigation as for fishing. Separate units are fine, but a single unit (capable of showing both chart plotter and sounder reading on screen simultaneously) maximizes limited space on small consoles.

Compass — With a good nautical chart, a compass will keep you headed in the right direction if your GPS fails. Amazingly, some small boaters venture far offshore with neither radio nor compass, according to the Coast Guard.

Extra Battery — Any boat fishing offshore should have a dual-battery system with a selector switch. This allows you to keep one battery in reserve in case one goes dead.

Emergency Beacons — An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicator Radio Beacon) and a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) are good ideas for any boat fishing offshore. Once activated, an encoded digital message is received by satellites, and is then transmitted back to ground-based search and rescue authorities. This signal provides information to assist in the search. Assuming you have properly registered the EPIRB or PLB, it tells rescuers who you are, your boat type and size, where you are, and other important data, including emergency contact information. An EPIRB is registered to the boat and is usually mounted on deck, while a PLB is registered to an individual and is carried by that person.

Life Jackets — Going offshore without them would not only be illegal but insane. Make sure your jackets are Coast Guard rated for offshore use (Type I). It is a good idea to wear a life jacket at all times, especially if fishing alone.

Emergency Kit — including flare gun and flares, cyalume sticks and waterproof strobe lights. (I also make sure my boat’s running lights are in good working order.) Don’t forget a good flashlight and extra sunscreen.

Emergency Food and Water — At least a half-gallon of water, some granola bars and beef jerky or canned meat can get you through a day or two.

Anchor and Lots of Line — Even if you don’t anchor to fish, you might find an anchor valuable, and plenty of heavy line is a must if you need to be towed.

Sea Anchor — Space might preclude stowing a small sea anchor, but make sure you have at least a bucket or, in a pinch, even a spare life jacket. Most boats tend to drift stern-to — the worst situation in a building sea. Your odds of staying afloat when broken down and adrift go up by a big chunk if you can keep the bow into the waves, and any sort of sea anchor will help accomplish this.

Pick the Right Fishing Weather

Given a seaworthy boat, properly equipped, everything else comes down to common sense. And nowhere can the small boater better demonstrate that than by reading the weather before and during a trip.

Starting out the morning in a 3-foot sea is a mere irritant to a 30-footer, but for the mini-boater who has his head screwed on right, it means a canceled trip. Many mornings I’ve arisen to find the weather service data revised from the previous evening’s 5- to 10-knot wind forecast to one of 10 to 20 knots. Anyone hoping to go offshore in a 17- to 22-footer has to realize his fishing days will be limited.

Look for periods between frontal systems, particularly in fall, winter and spring when dead-calm days sneak in between blows. During the summer, high pressure systems often bring many successive days of calm weather, particularly in the morning. The run home in many regions might mean a moderate but manageable chop, thanks to afternoon sea breezes.

Just be sure you know the marine forecast for the day, before you head out. When the forecast calls for light breezes all day and into the night, boating anglers with small boats can usually venture forth into offshore ocean waters with peace of mind. Otherwise, the best rule of thumb is a simple one: When in doubt, don’t go out.
