Intrepid adventurers: The boldest explorer yacht concepts
From ready-to-build projects to far-out concepts that might never make a splash of wake, BOAT reveals the freshest creations from some of the most original yacht designers.
The 2021 Explorer Yachts Summit will take place at the Yacht Club de Monaco on November 11.
Revealed by fledgling studio Bassan & Benedetti, the 78 metre Lontano is based on the hull of a supply vessel from the Norweigan shipyard Ulstein and features a striking military-inspired exterior. Powered by twin Rolls Royce AZ 100 electric Azipod engines, Lontano has an estimated top speed of 12 knots and a range of 8,000 nautical miles. Accommodation on board is for a total of 12 guests in six guest cabins designed in the style of a Manhattan sky-top apartment.
Project Axis
The 91 metre Project Axis , revealed by designer Adam Voorhees , features a private owner’s deck with a forward swimming pool and an aft sun lounging terrace. Constructed from a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the concept stretches over five decks and includes accommodation for 16 in seven VIP staterooms located below the private owner's deck. Power comes from a diesel and electric hybrid propulsion system, for a range of 5,000 nautical miles when cruising at 15 knots.
German shipbuilder Meyer Group's first superyacht concept, the 150 metre ONE 50 , stretches over six decks and features a "herculean" interior of 15,000GT. Designed to be sustainable, ONE 50 is powered by fuel cell technology and battery banks for an estimated speed of 23 knots.
Revealed by US-based Norwegian superyacht designer Strand Craft, Miami stretches across six decks and is "aggressively styled" according to the studio. Boasting a beam of 20 metres, the concept can also be “transformed into an open outdoor experience” thanks to packed garages of tenders and toys.
Triexplorer
Based on Marcelo Penna Yacht Design 's established trimaran design, 56 metre Triexplorer was designed with sustainability in mind. The concept features a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system, as well as solar panels and wind generators. The studio described it as “an 80 metre vessel sensation in a 56 metre aluminium vessel”.
From Vripack and RMK Marine , 36.5 metre Seven Seas is a "pocket-sized explorer, reimagined on a massive scale". The concept's steel hulled yacht was likened to a “Jaguar SUV” by Vripack co-creative director Bart M Bouwhuis. “It gives a quiet, harmonious looking profile that will be everlasting, without compromising on the internal layout,” he said.
Equilibrium
Penned by designer Alejandro Crespo of Daroca Design in partnership with Brythonic Yachts, Equilibrium ’s design was “meticulously thought out to fit in any type of environment, from Antarctica to the Caribbean.” The 105 metre concept is to be built entirely in steel paired with a “champagne-green” hull, with the name Equilibrium inspired by the "optimal balance between her explorer yacht features and pleasure yacht luxuries".
Revealed by Iddes Yachts, this 55 metre go-anywhere expedition vessel combines luxury and comfort. Described as the “ultimate adventure platform”, the yacht features a D13 certified helideck capable of carrying tenders and amphibious vehicles. Elsewhere, the yacht features a 185 square metre loading deck, a beam of 10.5 metres and a five-ton multipurpose crane.
Project Orca
Italian yard Rosetti Superyachts penned this 65 metre ice-classed explorer concept inspired by the killer whale. Project Orca features a “robust” profile with “bold superstructure styling” and a radar mast designed to resemble a dorsal fin. The exterior design, penned by Meccano Engineering , combines curved and straight lines with Rosetti's supply vessel characteristics. The concept boasts a 12 metre beam, interior volume of 13,00GT, and can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins.
This 105 metre high-tech, go-anywhere expedition concept from Oceanco is designed specifically for cruising in remote, harsh locations. Exterior designer Timur Bozca said the concept had been inspired by "rocket ship designs" and said the yacht would be "as comfortable in the Med as she would be in the Arctic Circle." Key features include a cinema/ game room, spa and wellness area, yoga room and enough tender space to accommodate a Triton submersible. A true adventurer's yacht, Esquel features a helipad as well as labs, vehicles and tools for “shore exploration.”

Built for Adventure: Everything You Need to Know About Today’s Explorer Yachts
What is an expedition or explorer yacht .
Most yachts are designed to cruise inland and coastal waterways but in reality, very few are built to voyage the world’s oceans. It is only these bluewater vessels, known as explorer or expedition yachts, that can take you on adventures to the most remote, spectacular, and pristine corners of the globe.
A few decades back, these long-range motoryachts were called “ trawlers ” after the commercial fishing trawlers they often resembled, topped by enclosed pilothouses that frequently featured reverse-slanted, “ North Sea ” windshields. But over the years, the trawler yacht category became crowded with “wannabe” boats that only looked like their rugged offshore counterparts. In reality, many of them were unable to venture very far from the coast.
Enter the true explorer yacht – a vessel that is purpose-built to be seaworthy and self-sufficient enough to serve as a luxury platform for oceangoing expeditions that are virtually without limits.
“ The whole idea of an expedition yacht is how the owner intends to use his or her boat. We are working on the first Cheoy Lee 107 Explorer project now. It’s a boat capable of going practically anywhere in the world ,” said Jon Overing of Overing Yacht Design , the naval architect who collaborated with Cheoy Lee Yachts on its new Explorer Series .
“ The whole idea of an expedition yacht is how the owner intends to use his or her boat. We are working on the first Cheoy Lee 107 Explorer project now. It’s a boat capable of going practically anywhere in the world ”
What gives an expedition yacht “go-anywhere” capability?
It’s not just one single aspect of the vessel’s design, construction, or outfitting. With the world’s best explorer yachts, it’s the entire package.
“ I think any viable explorer yacht has be based on a full-displacement hull. That type of hull makes a better sea boat than a semi-displacement or planing hull … Full displacement hulls also inherently have more volume, and you need more volume to fit the mission profile for an expedition yacht. ”
Rugged and reliable:
What to look for in explorer yacht design and construction, full-displacement hull.
Sufficient speed
Historically, full-displacement vessels tended to be slow through the water, making up in seaworthiness what they lacked in speed. “ The image in everyone’s mind was a 10-knot boat, but it doesn’t have to be that way ,” Overing said. Today’s full-displacement hull designs, notably our fast-displacement hullform that Overing has developed for the Cheoy Lee Explorer Series . Overing’s fast-displacement hull combines superior seakeeping, optimum range and efficiency at 9 to 10 knots with the capability of running over 14 knots if needed to avoid a storm or make up time in a tight itinerary. With a speed/length ratio of 1.6 – 1.7, the Overing fast-displacement hulls are capable of well exceeding theoretical hull speed allowing higher speeds if the owner chooses the higher horsepower options.
Bulbous bow
Seaworthiness
Practical profile.
Take the Cheoy Lee Explorer Series , for example. These multi-deck yachts sport graceful superstructures that are skillfully wrought in aluminum by Cheoy Lee Shipyard artisans . They feature spacious on-deck gathering areas, including flybridge, bridge and lower aft deck lounges, designed for sunbathing, dining and entertaining. They even boast aft beach clubs that are ideal for launching myriad watersports adventures.
“The exterior styling of an explorer yacht doesn’t have to look like a tugboat. It can be modern, classic, traditional – however you want,”
At the same time, however, expedition yacht design should address the long, rough passages the yacht will frequently face. Typically, these yachts have high bulwarks, full pilothouses and Portuguese bridges designed to protect the yacht from seas breaking on deck. The new Cheoy Lee Explorer 132 , which features an aft-pilothouse design is an excellent example of form following function while still displaying an eye-catching profile.
High-tech construction.
Classification.
“ It’s another system of checks and balances you are bringing into the project. I view it as an insurance policy for the owner ,” Overing said, adding, “ If you are building a good boat to begin with, there’s not a lot of cost difference in building it to class. ” Cheoy Lee Explorer Yachts are available built to Lloyd’s ✠ 100A1 SSC Yacht Mono G6 classification.
Fuel tankage.
Commercial-grade equipment.
Maximized storage..
Well-laid-out crew areas.
Bespoke owner/guest accommodations.
Satellite communications.
Tenders & toys., have it your way:, building a new explorer yacht.
There are pre-owned expedition yachts on the market today that come in all makes, models, sizes, vintages, and levels of bluewater capability. An owner who elects to purchase a brokerage boat is best advised to develop a mission profile for his or her desired vessel in advance and then choose the boat that ticks off the most boxes on that list. How far do you want to go? How many guests do you want to bring with you? It’s important to determine all your desires and needs before you start shopping for a yacht.
“ It’s always a compromise with a pre-owned explorer yacht. It’s someone else’s design for another owner ,” said Panu Virtanen, vice president – sales, Cheoy Lee Shipyard North America. He added, “ Who built it and how was it built? Does it have maintenance issues? It’s important to find out. ”
Use a surveyor with a proven track record to determine whether there are any hidden problems with the pre-owned yacht. And if you decide to go ahead with the purchase, many brokers recommend keeping a budget in reserve to refit the vessel. You may need to update the electronics and stabilizers, and you probably will want to change at least some of the furnishings and the soft goods. The yacht also may need its classification certificate renewed. “ That can be an expensive process ,” Virtanen cautioned.
Building a new explorer yacht with a reputable shipyard, on the other hand, will ensure you get the vessel that fulfills your individual dreams for global exploration. “ You can get exactly what you want ,” he said.
The shipyard can help you to put together a team dedicated to designing the best expedition boat for your mission profile, including members of the shipyard’s management, design and engineering teams, the yacht’s naval architect and interior designer, along with your captain, yacht broker, and yacht management company, if you so desire. This “ dream team ” will be dedicated to creating an explorer yacht that is unique to you.
“There is no ‘perfect boat’, but when you build one, you can come extremely close to getting the explorer yacht that is perfect for you”
Do you want a main-deck master suite with panoramic views so you can see spectacular scenery you when you wake up each morning? Do you want to be able to cook breakfast for your family yourself in an eat-in galley on a sunny Sunday morning? Would you like to be able to soak in a Jacuzzi on the flybridge, watch a film on the foredeck, or fish from the aft deck? Or do you fancy a beach club where you can lounge virtually at eye level with the sea, hop onto a Jet Ski whenever the mood strikes you, and enjoy a cocktail while your yacht’s underwater lights attract an “ aquarium ” full of exotic fish? “ There is no ‘perfect boat ’, but when you build one, you can come extremely close to getting the explorer yacht that is perfect for you ,” Virtanen said.
Who builds the best explorer yachts?
If you plan to build a new explorer yacht, it’s important to consider working with a shipyard that has a commercial shipbuilding pedigree in addition to a proven reputation for launching high-quality luxury yachts. Longevity, integrity, and family are key factors behind a successful shipyard. Few shipyards around the globe can boast more than 150 years of experience under continuous operation by the same family, like Cheoy Lee.
“ Cheoy Lee Shipyard has 150 years of experience in building commercial vessels that operate 24/7 in demanding conditions. That is the philosophy of the commercial side of the company, and it carries over to all the explorer yachts that we build as well. ”
It’s also important to research other expedition yachts the shipyard has launched in the past. Have they won awards and voyaged 200,000 nautical miles through most of the world’s oceans in a decade, like the 146’7” Cheoy Lee expedition yacht Dorothea III ?
“If you plan to voyage far, you need to be able to rely on your yacht in any conditions anywhere in the world. That experience is what you look for in a shipyard when you are building a true expedition yacht.”

Vitruvius unveils 80m explorer concept
The details of vitruvius yachts and philippe briand's latest 80m superyacht concept have been revealed….
London-based superyacht design & naval architecture company Vitruvius have revealed their concept for an 80m explorer yacht. The concept continues the partnership in architectural engineering that Philippe Briand incorporated in Vitruvius’ 55m Shinkai , built by Feadship in the Netherlands and delivered in 2021. Shinkai was designed for global exploration, incorporating storage for a submarine, a rough terrain vehicle and a limousine tender.
The new explorer stands out for its long aft deck which allows storage of a variety of toys and a helipad. Designed for water sports enthusiasts, the explorer yacht has a large beach club and health centre below deck with an ease of access to the water.
The vessel has a capacity for up to 12 guests across its 6 staterooms. As with Shinkai , Vitruvius have ensured its concept considers fuel efficiency as well as storage capacity. The new explorer yacht will have a steel hull made for optimal efficiency and adhering to the latest industry criteria for sustainability.
The design complies with Vitruvius ' commitment to reducing the footprint of the superyacht industry. Briand himself is part of the Board of Directors for Water Revolution Foundation , a non-profit organisation, co-founded by the Superyacht Group’s Chairman Martin Redmayne.
The yacht is expected to reach a top speed of 19 knots and cruise at 14 knots – special care has also been given to controlling any rolling motions on board – a trait which is also key for ease of launching its onboard toys and submarines. Furthermore, the addition of gyro/fin stabilisers is also in consideration for the vessel.

New – 80m explorer.
Introducing the 80m ultimate explorer concept by Vitruvius Yachts
The London-based design studio Vitruvius Yachts has revealed the first details of its latest superyacht concept: an 80m go-anywhere explorer yacht.
With the design following closely in the footsteps of Vitruvius’ 54.9-metre Shinkai – built by Feadship in the Netherlands and delivered in 2021 – this new explorer is notable for its long aft deck which is ideal for storing a generous toy collection or even a helipad.
Designed to satisfy the most active and adventurous of owners, the explorer boasts a vast beach club and health centre below deck, enabling direct and convenient access to the sea for water sports.
This new vessel represents Vitruvius’ take on the ideal explorer superyacht. She maintains her superyacht DNA through the innovative design of her exterior, as well as through the exceptional space and comfort which are offered by her interior. She is also a true explorer through and through, and will have an exceptional autonomous range of 6500 nautical miles to take her owners anywhere in the world.
Housing 12 guests across a total of 6 carefully-designed staterooms, the naval architecture of the vessel is informed by the success of Vitruvius’ previous explorer vessel, Shinkai, with her steel hull created for optimal efficiency and adhering to the latest industry criteria for sustainability.
With performance and onboard comfort key to the new explorer vessel – she is expected to reach a top speed of 19 knots and cruise with ease at 14 knots – special care has also been given to controlling any rolling motions on board – a trait which is also key for ease of launching her onboard toys such as submarines. Furthermore, the addition of gyro/fin stabilisers is also in consideration for the vessel.
Finally, owners can also decide to choose an observatory option for the expedition superyacht, which would provide a 22-square metre space to bring those on board even closer to the beauties of the night sky, wherever they might find themselves in the world.

Explorer 30m
Although functionality usually takes priority over sleek looks on most explorer-type motoryachts, designer Guido de Groot has ensured this 30m explorer concept combines the best of both worlds.
The project boasts all of the excellent amenities of a superyacht, including an impressive beach club, hydraulic transom platform, full-beam master suite forward, four guest cabins and plenty of space for crew.
Styling-wise, this is still clearly an Explorer yacht with negative windows in the wheelhouse, while the angled bow adds length and elegance to her profile. Another design element is the way the window graphics have been smoothly integrated within dark glass surfaces.
With a fast displacement hull, this is a boat designed to travel at speed, making for the perfect yacht for an adrenaline junkie owner keen to explore the most remote corners of the world.

Nissan gets it on with the loud "Karaok-e" van concept
Sing in your van with all your friends.
With a minivan , you can pack it with a half dozen friends to shuttle them to a big party. But that involves some boring time in traffic. With the Nissan Townstar Karaok-e you can skip that boring step because the van is the party.
That’s the idea behind Nissan's modified Townstar Evalia is a one-off project recently shown in Europe. It’s an exercise that transforms the van into a mobile karaoke lounge.
The bulk of the modifications are in the rear of the van. A 32-inch video monitor for graphics and lyrics is the centerpiece along with the exotic sound system. There are also fancy lights in the ceiling and the cabinetry, and they're synchronized the to the beat of the music. There's no mention in the press release if the van comes with a “don’t dance while driving” warning.
This all-electric seven-seat Townstar Evalia—which Nissan rather cosmically claims is intended to inspire “well-being and happiness”—further features a number of apps that allows passengers to show off their vocal chops, record their performances, and share them on social media platforms.
The brand hasn’t ignored the exterior, which features a juicy wrap enhanced by a couple of hashtags. The neon-like roof attachment would almost certainly have impressed Donna Summer.
The Townstar Evalia in Europe shares close ties with the Renault Kangoo van. It comes in a long wheelbase configuration with options for five or seven seats and is available with either fully electric or gasoline powertrains.
Nissan offers no hint that this particular Townstar variant might enter serious production, and we doubt that even a groundswell of interest from the public would get the company to start building them. But we bet there are limo services that might be interested, and certainly some upfitters that could put together something similar. Of course, that's as long as said customer has the will and the means.
