Beaching legs, Design #131/8 $30.00

Beaching legs are a safe and simple way to get a deep keel boat ashore, either for winter storageor just between tides for bottom work. Carried aboard when criosing they provide independence from haul-out facilities and a measure of insurance in the event of an emergency.

In Europe they have been used for hundreds of years, but for some reason are much less common in North America. We are frequently asked for details of their construction and setup.

This single-sheet plan gives full details of the legs used on the 22 ft cutter "Surprise". While actual dimensions must be tailored to the individual hull, the proportions and attachment detail shown on the drawing will work on most long keeled boats.

One sheet, insluded with "Surprise II" plans, or available separately for $30

Beaching Legs

By RICHARD TOYNE

With more and more boats kept in marinas and lifted ashore in winter, beaching legs are becoming less common. They can, however, be a very useful way to keep a boat upright on a slipway or beach between tides.

To make sure the legs are easy to use and that the boat will dry out safely, there are some important considerations. Firstly, it’s important to use leg ropes, to brace the legs in a fore-and-aft direction. On Edith , the Polperro hooker I used to own, the ropes were from 8mm line.

yacht beaching legs for sale

They passed through a hole in the bottom of the leg and were held in place by two figure-of-eight knots. One end was led aft to the transom, and the other tied off on the cranse iron.

Secondly, the legs should be a little shorter than you might expect. If Edith were on a flat, level surface, they would appear to be about 21 2in (6cm) too short. This is to ensure that the weight of the boat is always taken on the keel with one leg as a prop. Serious damage could be done if the legs were too long; the boat could hang between them on a slightly uneven surface.

As Edith ’s winter berth at the head of the Penryn River was on soft mud, I nailed plywood pads to the bottom of the legs to stop them sinking in. I also fitted small wedge-shaped steps to one leg to facilitate climbing in and out of the boat.

Dimensions obviously depend on the size and weight of the boat. On  Edith , 24ft (7.5m) long, they were made from 4in by 4in (100mm x 100mm)  timber, with a second piece of 2in by 4in timber fastened to the inside face of the leg and shaped to fit the side of the boat.

A bolt through the legs and the topsides held them in place, while the part that touched the hull was cushioned with an off-cut of carpet. With the legs removed, the holes in the topsides were plugged with corks common practice on inshore sailing boats of this type. For yachts going  offshore, screw-in bronze plugs are available.

Beaching Legs

A simple way to keep your boat upright

From Issue   November 2014

I prefer to anchor out when we are camp-cruising, but with Alaska’s 20′ tide range that isn’t always an option in some of the shallower coves. Boats with flat bottoms wide enough to keep them upright will ground comfortably on a falling tide, but our Caledonia yawl, with its narrow keel, will come to rest heeled over. This is where beaching legs, also known as sheer legs, come in handy. This decidedly low-tech gear is just the thing to keep your boat upright on the beach, allowing the continued use of your boat as a base camp between tides.

Without her beach legs, this Caledonia yawl would be resting on her planking and heeled at about 10°, the angle of her deadrise. With the legs she's level, supported by her keel and gunwales and fit for habitation.

Captain Ahab's spares? The author's yellow cedar beach legs were a driftwood solution to the problem of sleeping aboard on a falling tide that would leave the boat high and dry in the middle of the night.

Captain Ahab’s spares? The author’s yellow cedar beaching legs were a driftwood solution to the problem of sleeping aboard on a falling tide that would leave the boat high and dry in the middle of the night.

Although it would be tempting to make an adjustable set of legs, the sort used on larger boats, this isn’t necessary. I made a simple set from an Alaskan yellow cedar pole I salvaged from the beach on one of our camping trips when it became obvious that we were going to spend the night high and dry. They worked so well, I brought them home and refined them a bit.

The length of the legs was determined by holding the boat level on a flat beach and measuring from the bottom of the outwale to the ground. To that I added 12″, so there would be enough above the rail to secure the legs to the boat. The legs are notched to tuck under the outwale, providing a good strong contact point with the boat. It is better to err on the short side from foot to notch, since you want the keel taking most of the weight. Mine are then tapered toward the foot, which was also left wide for a nice bearing surface on the ground. If the ground is especially soft, a flat rock or a slab of driftwood will keep the foot from sinking.

A thole pin serves as the simplest of attachments for a beach leg. The pin pulls the leg tight against the sheer and keeps the leg vertical. The load is taken not by the pin, but by the outwale set in a notch in the beach leg.

The upper end of each leg has two Velcro straps, secured with screws and finish washers, which are wrapped tight around the tholepins (something that could easily be adapted to a more conventional oar lock). On big boats it was standard practice to through-bolt the legs to the hull and run guy lines fore and aft from the foot of the leg to the rail, but this doesn’t seem to be necessary on a small boat.

When the legs aren’t in use they’re easy to stow. Their simple attachment makes them easy to deploy while still afloat, for times when you’re going to dry out in the middle of the night. Just be sure you know what’s under you; it would be a shame to be surprised by a big rock in the wrong spot.

Jim Danner is an IT manager for the state of Alaska. When he’s not working he’s spending time with his family or messing around with small boats. His article  about cruising  with his family appeared in our September 2014 issue.

Editor’s notes:

After reading Jim’s article I decided that my Whitehall needed a pair of beaching legs. Varnished inside and out, it wasn’t intended for rough handing on shore. While it has a narrow plank keel and will balance upright on its own, a pair of beaching legs would assure that it wouldn’t rest on its bright-finished Port Orford cedar planking.

The broad foot of the beach leg keeps it from sinking into soft ground.

The detachable foot of the beach leg keeps it from sinking into soft ground.

The Whitehall has oarlocks instead of thole pins so I followed up on Jim’s suggestion to fabricate a way of connecting the legs to the rowlocks. A ½″ rod fits perfectly into the rowlocks socket. I bought a 2′ length of mild steel rod at the hardware store for a few bucks. Brass or stainless steel might have been a better choice but not so easy to find nor as inexpensive. Aluminum would have worked well too but I am not familiar with heating and bending it.

The rod required a bend of about 80° to go from the nearly vertical hole in the rowlock to the horizontal hole through the beach leg. I made the bends before cutting the rod to length—the extra length gave me a lever cool to the touch. I heated the rod with an ordinary propane torch. It took about 4 or 5 minutes to get the steel to glow red. I kept the flame aimed at a single spot to focus the heat, and thus the bend, in a small section of the rod. Only an inch or so was glowing brightly when I turned off the torch and went to the vice to make the bend. After cooling the rod in water I cut the ends to length with a hacksaw. With a new blade the cuts don’t take long.

The block attached to the bottom of the steel rod transfers the load taken my the beach leg to the inwale, a strong structural element.

The block attached to the bottom of the steel rod transfers the load taken my the beaching leg to the inwale, a strong structural element.

For the rod to keep the beaching leg in place it has to be kept from sliding up. There was no easy way to use a cotter pin, so I made an oak block to attach to the rod. To make a groove to fit the side of the rod I clamped the two blocks together and drilled down the center with a ½” Forstner bit. Each top of each block would press against the bottom face of the inwale, keeping the rod in place and transferring any strain to a structural part of the boat. I drilled a 17/64″ hole in the block and drilled and tapped the rod for a ¼″ x 20 thumbscrew.

The straight side of a hairpin cotter pin rests in a kerf, keeping the beach leg vertical.

The beach legs are ¾″ oak. A ½″ hole fits over the rod. On the tablesaw I cut a kerf through the hole to make a passageway for a hairpin cotterpin. The pin holds the beach leg against the outwale and the slot captures the pin to keep the leg pointed down.

At the bottom of each leg I cut a shouldered tenon and made a foot with a loose-fitting mortise. A bungee cord laced through the foot and leg keeps the foot in place. The loose fit adapts to uneven terrain and makes it easy to remove the foot when the beaching legs are stowed.

The parts of the beach legs fit in a small fabric bag that's easily stowed.

For about $20, and a mostly pleasant afternoon in the shop, I was in business. I did have one moment of despair: One of the holes I drilled for the cotter pin angled well away from the center of the rod. There was no way to drill a new hole and I thought I’d have to start over and make a new piece. Fortunately the hole was just the right size to drive a 16-penny nail through. I cut the ends flush, dabbed on a bit of flux, and hit it with the torch and a bit of silver solder. That saved the day. The new hole went in straight and true.

I made a set of legs for my Sam Devlin Eider, a 16′ sprits’l cutter with a keel that draws 2′. They worked great. When the boat was beached the deck was at waist height and I could easily climb aboard.

I'm looking at buying an Albin Vega which has previously been fitted with stainless plates at deck level which are for beaching legs. The plates are firmly bolted to the hull and have one hole for attachment of the legs. I presume I can simply use a sturdy but timber with a bolt through it? Plus of course fore and aft lines. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to drill a series of holes- like a stay adjuster- to give some flexibility in length. Also, I wonder what size of wood to use? Thanks for any help.

It really depends on whether you want to beach her occasionally of have her on a drying mooring. In the case of the former, then just stick the legs on and dry out. In the case of the latter more care is required. The first thing I would say, is make bloody sure that your legs are the weakest part of the set-up and there is room for her to settle on her side without damaging other boats in the event of a leg breaking. If the legs are too strong you will break the boat. In my, largely bad, experience of legs on drying moorings, I'd say don't bother with the extra holes as by the time you know what setting they need to be on you won't be able to adjust them as you'll be aground. An exception can possibly be made for properly screw-adjustable legs, but they are expensive and can't auto-adjust to changing swell patterns. Lastly, if you are thinking of taking a permanent drying mooring and you are ANYWHERE near a place which gets swell, make sure you are OK with damage to your boat. For reference I'm in the Bristol Channel in North Devon and I've tried to have three long/long fin keelers here and have wound up in Bideford, safe from all weather, but five very tidal miles from the open sea.

Thanks for the replies. I'd be intending to use the legs for beaching once or twice a year, that's all. I'd seen the 'yachtlegs' at over £600 a pair and wondered why there were so expensive when I'm thinnking of using about £20 of timber...

Hi Rob, We have a Vega and somewhere on it, is an A4 Booklet issued years ago by the Owners Club, which gives a complete specification for making/fitting timber beaching legs; by the sound of things, the one you're considering already has the hull fittings. I've looked around and can't find my copy anywhere - how can stuff hide on a twenty seven footer? - so I would suggest that you keep checking back on this thread for a day or two and wait for Steve Birch to reply (he must have a copy of said booklet, as he gave me mine) or alternatively go to the Owners Club Website ( www.albinvega.co.uk ) and track him down through that

I made a pair for my Stag 28 from fence posts from B&Q. Put some blocks on the side to match the curve of the hull. Didn't have a hull plate so tied them (very firmly) to the centre cleats which I had beefed up with big backing plates. They were only used to dry out for craning out and back in. They did the job OK, the fact that they were lashed to the cleats meant they had a little 'give' to take any slight pounding when drying out. Wouldn't want to carry them on board.

Beaching Yacht Legs

The shape of the keel on a Seastream makes the boat particularly suitable for beaching legs. In fact the boat will stand upright on its own on a flat surface! Once, when I was having the boat lifted, I asked the crane operator to lower the boat onto its keel and slowly let the straps go slack. The boat sat perfectly upright on its own!

Below is a photo of Shadowfax dried out on Bell Isle in France. The legs are from a company called Yacht Legs and they attach at the beam with a quick release socket. They can be assembled and attached in approximately five minutes.  They are set as default to the depth of the keel but initially I wind them up using a small handle on the top by a few inches. Then when I know the keel has touched down I will wind them down to also touch the bottom.

There is very little weight on the actual legs and they purely keep the boat upright. All the weight is on the actual keel of the boat.  In this position, once the legs are set, you can rise and fall with the tide quite happily.  Needless to say you need to do this in a sheltered anchorage or harbour where there is little or no swell.
