The main Caribbean sailing season runs from November through to July. The Caribbean primary high season is from mid-December to March, when the winter escapees from North America and Europe arrive in their greatest numbers. The hurricane season is from late July to early October, although hurricanes are in general rare in the southern Caribbean. Unfortunately, they can be prevalent around Cuba, Bahamas and the east coast of the U.S. every few years. This is the least expensive time for chartering in the Caribbean and there are some really good deals are available. However, as well as running the risk of storms, this time of year also tends to be associated with lighter (or non-existent) winds.
As with many boating locations the Caribbean shoulder season, in this case from April to July, is also a great time to charter a boat as there are less shore based visitors, some lovely settled sunny weather, and warm yet steady breeze. The Caribbean is made up of many different multi-nation (and multi-cultural) volcanic islands. Ilma's maiden voyage went from Barcelona to Monte-Carlo – we were on board.
By Kim Ayling
Cruises get a bit of a bad rep. A “human lasagna,” a particularly judgemental writer once described them, where layers of often older travelers (or “cruisers”) live on top of each other for days, weeks and sometimes even months on end, with the aim of ticking off bucket list destinations with minimal effort. It was then, given this reputation, a stroke of genius by the powers that be at The Ritz-Carlton to not describe their cruise line — as it undeniably is — as a cruise line.
Instead, in October 2022, we were introduced to The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . A polished, refined and, most importantly, boutique take on cruising, where travelers can enjoy that famous Ritz-Carlton service, at sea — a floating hotel from one of the most respected hospitality brands on the planet, if you will. Its first ship was the 623-ft, 149-cabin Evrima , which was delivered three years late but to plenty of fanfare. She lived up to The Ritz-Carlton’s sky-high promises: cabins were roomy, service was personalized and excursions were immersive.

Now, just shy of two years later, Evrima ’s little sister has hit the water, embarking on her inaugural pre-official-launch journey in late August from Barcelona to Monte-Carlo . In true Ritz-Carlton style, she set sail with a bang, with an opening night DJ set from Sam Feldt, cocktail bar pop-up from Paradiso in Barcelona (a mainstay on the World’s 50 Best Bars list), free-flowing Moet & Chandon, and a bunch of intrigued first-in guests on board. Ilma hath arrived.
Ilma is a touch larger than her older sister at 790 ft and with 224 suites. Every accommodation is a suite — no poky cabins here, thank you — and even the entry-level option comes with a balcony big enough for dining space and a sun lounger. The Ritz-Carlton by no means pushes the boat out (no pun intended) when it comes to interior design, but that’s not meant as criticism — the decor is minimal but warm, muted but cozy.

There are plenty of little extra touches: polish off one packet of your favorite treats in the all-inclusive snack cupboard and three more will have arrived by the time you look again. Poured the last drop of your welcome champagne last night? Another bottle will be chilling pronto. I even came back to my room each evening to a display of gifts that would make Santa blush, from Diptyque perfume to a Bulgari AirPods case.
If you’re looking for a showstopper, though, go for the Owner’s Suite. Covering 1,033 sq ft (with an extra 721 sq ft outside), it has a separate dining area and lounge, a kitchenette, a walk-in wardrobe and its own outdoor hot tub. No half measures.

This is Ritz-Carlton-on-Sea, so service is the real marker of luxury on Ilma. The guest-to-staff ratio is proudly 1:1.2 (among the highest ratio in the industry, so I’m told) and you feel it at every stage — from the dedicated suite ambassadors on hand to cater to every whim to the bar team who very helpfully whizz around the pool areas, trays of cocktails that you didn’t know you wanted until you saw them in hand. By the time you disembark, expect plenty of the team to know you by name — as well as, crucially, your drinks order. Most things are included in your fare too, so you won’t feel that niggling dread of the bill ticking up as you go.
But, so far, so cruise. Pick a line luxurious enough, and the above will come as standard. The real place where traditional cruising reveals its flaws, however, is in the on-shore excursions, with locals in many ports notoriously fed up with hordes descending en masse. No such worry for Ilma guests, though. During our two-night call at St Tropez, I, along with a small (by cruise standards) group of fellow guests headed to land for an afternoon at the Domaine La Rouillère vineyard.
[See also: Lancôme’s Rose House: Perfume’s Most Exclusive House Tour ]
Worries set in when I saw our host waving a clipboard above her head, indicating that the group should follow her to a nearby mini-bus. The worries disappeared when we arrived, though. The vineyard and its thankfully air-conned winery were ours for the afternoon; a tour turned into a tasting of its delightfully crisp Provence rosé . Small groups like this not only keep the locals happy but also mean you make quick friends — a few sips in and we were all sharing stories of champagne-fueled festivities the night before.
If even this type of excursion is a bit too close to organized fun for you, fear not. Regular tenders run to shore when the ship is at anchor so you can explore as you please (many of my fellow rosé sippers stayed in town for dinner, post wine) and the concierge team can set up fully private custom excursions if you like — there’s even the option to stay overnight and rejoin at the next port of call.
[See more: The Best Luxury Villas in France]
Personally, though, I would recommend as many nights on board as possible as one place where Ritz-Carlton has really leaned into the cruising experience is in its food and drink program. There are five restaurants — including lavish multi-course fine dining at Seta su Ilma by chef Fabio Trabocchi (of Washington DC’s Michelin-starred Fiola), light Mediterranean bites at poolside The Beach House by Michael Mina, and sharing-style Pan-Asian dishes at Memorī — and no less than seven bars, as well as 24-hour in-suite dining. You’d be hard-pressed to enjoy such an embarrassment of riches on even the biggest of private yachts.
For our final night on board Ilma , someone at The Ritz-Carlton surely paid off the weather gods — a sunset as beautiful as I’d ever seen gracefully waved us away from the swanky shores of St Tropez. After a night of sailing, Ilma ’s first journey came to an end in Monaco; I opened my curtains to a view of the sunrise casting a pink glow over Monte-Carlo’s gleaming Port Hercules harbor.
After dropping us off in the billionaire’s playground, the ship was snaking her way down to Rome for her first proper outing (read: not filled with notebook-wielding journalists). From there, she’s off around the Med — Santorini, Valletta and Taomorina beckon — before she heads over the Atlantic to prove to the Caribbean that not all cruises are created equal.

Feadship's new c vessel catches the light just like the gem., rachel cormack.
Digital Editor
Baltic yachts just unveiled its first catamaran, a sleek 107-foot multihull.
Feadship is marking its diamond jubilee with a new marine gem.
At the center of the C lies an atrium with floating stars and a lift without walls that allows seafarers to navigate decks in a novel fashion. Highlights of the living quarters include a duplex owner’s suite, a partially enclosed sea lounge that can be used at anchor or on the waves, a beach club with a sea-level dining area, and a private observation deck with an articulating crow’s nest. To top it off, C is outfitted with two infinity pools that match the hexagonal shape of the atrium and other seating areas.
C also shines on the technology front. She features a sleek hull and a fully electric propulsion system similar to sisterships Breathe and Savannah that renders her 30 percent more efficient than a typical 246-footer with dual shafts, propellers, and rudders, according to Feadship. Her streamlined underwater profile means less wake, too.
C will also be equipped with fuel cells and lithium-metal batteries that will together cover all power needs. (Feadship has also incorporated fuel cells on Project 821 .) Green methanol will be the fuel of choice due to its relatively high density and ease of use. Normal cruising speed on the fuel cells is 14 knots, while a top speed of 17 knots can be achieved by adding the battery power. In addition, two wave-actuated fins can generate enough grunt to cover one-third of the hotel load.
C will be fully unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show next week. The yacht is just a concept at this stage, but Feadship says she is completely buildable. Perhaps the yard will land a buyer at the show.

The bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) british-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early monday, by nicole winfield, danica kirka and andrea rosa | the associated press • published august 21, 2024 • updated on august 21, 2024 at 4:19 pm.
Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday and searched for one more as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.
Rescue crews brought four body bags ashore into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said a fifth body had been located. Divers at the scene said they would try to recover it on Thursday while continuing the search for the sixth.
24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are
The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and with no signs of life emerging over three days of searching.
The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.
Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered Monday — that of the ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, of Antigua.
Get Tri-state area news delivered to your inbox. Sign up for NBC New York's News Headlines newsletter.
Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but would visit his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua and Canada as the nationality of people on board.
The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.
Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
Meanwhile, investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy even though no formal suspects have been publicly identified.
Questions have abounded about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to sink so quickly, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors.
Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the shipmaker, blamed human error for the disaster, which he said took 16 minutes. “The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told RAI state television after he met with prosecutors.
Costantino cited AIS ship tracking data which he said showed the Bayesian had taken on water for four minutes when a sudden gust of wind flipped it and it continued taking on water. The ship straightened up slightly and then went down, he said.
But was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat like the Bayesian might have been retractable, to allow it to enter shallower ports?
“There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview.
The captain of the sailboat that came to the Bayesian’s rescue said his craft had sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.
He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the storm, which was forecast, rolled in.
“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Bornersaid in a text message. But he said that might not have been a viable option for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.
“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.
Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.
“So for the vessel to sink, especially this fast, you are really looking at taking water on board very quickly, but also in a number of locations along the length of the vessel, which again indicates that it might have been rolled over on its side,” Souppez said.
Italian coast guard and fire rescue divers continued the underwater search in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in tag teams could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching, though reinforcements outfitted with special equipment to enable longer dives were also on the wreck Wednesday.
In all, some 27 divers were taking rotations, including four who helped with the recovery of the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster off Tuscany. They called the Porticello wreck a “little Concordia,” fire crews said in a statement, which for the first time Wednesday referred to the operation as a “recovery.”
The limited dive time was designed in part to avoid decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.
“The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggested the operation's managers were trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.
“It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said.
Additionally, the divers were working in extremely tight spaces, with debris floating around them, limited visibility and air tanks on their backs.
“We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.”
“It’s not a question of entering the cabin to inspect it,” he added. “They’ve arrived at the level of the cabins, but it’s not like you can open the door.”
Mike lynch’s widow faces $250m lawsuit for ‘reputational damage’ over doomed bayesian superyacht.
A rogue lawyer for the builder behind the doomed Bayesian superyacht — on which tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others died — sued Lynch’s widow for nearly $250 million, claiming the accident caused the shipbuilder massive “reputational damage.”
Filed Friday in Palermo by lawyer Tommaso Bertuccelli on behalf of The Italian Sea Group, the lawsuit said liability for the sunken vessel lay squarely with Lynch’s widow and the boat crew, according to Fortune.
And it said TISG had lost significant business because of the disaster, such as a well-known fashion company that canceled plans to hold a brand launch on one of the company’s yachts, the outlet said.
But in a bizarre twist, the sea group immediately distanced itself from the suit, claiming it didn’t authorize the filing and wants Bertuccelli to pull the claim, Fortune said.
“The Italian Sea Group … strongly denies the claims published in [Italian newspaper] La Nazione regarding a legal action following the Bayesian tragedy,” a spokesperson said.
“Although TISG has given a generic mandate to the lawyers named in the article, no legal representative of the company has examined, signed or authorized any writ of summons.”
Lynch, a British billionaire, died in the early morning hours of Aug. 19 when a powerful squall struck the $40 million, TISG-built yacht off the coast of Sicily, sparking tornado-like waterspouts that inundated the craft.
Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, also died, as did the ship’s chef, Ricardo Thomas; New York City attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda ; and Morgan Stanley executive Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy .
Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife and Hannah’s mother, was one of 15 people who escaped the 184-foot luxury yacht .
The voyage had been a celebration of sorts for Lynch, who’d just been acquitted on criminal fraud charges in the US.
The exact cause of the boat’s destruction remains unknown, however.
Italian prosecutors are probing whether the actions of Captain James Cutfield, 51, may have led to tragedy , since ship captains are responsible for the safety of the vessel, its crew and its passengers, according to maritime law.
Cutfield was reportedly named in the lawsuit, as were two other crewmembers; Camper & Nicholsons, the company that hired the crew; and Revtom, the company that owned the Bayesian and which is controlled by Lynch’s widow, Bacares.
But a TISG representative told Fortune that the company won’t pursue the crew or Lynch’s widow for damages.
Still, the shipbuilder has been trying to control a mushrooming PR nightmare ever since the vessel sinking.
Giovanni Costantino, the company’s CEO, had called the yacht “unsinkable,” and said human error must have led to the disaster.
“The first thought when I read the news of the sinking was that there was a problem related to the management of the boat or the fact that the hull may have hit a rock,” Costantino told the Guardian.
“But when the passengers declared they had not heard a loud noise onboard, which would have meant that the yacht had struck a reef, I realized the yacht had taken on water due to a hatch that was left open. Otherwise the Bayesian cannot sink.”
Prosecutors have said the boat was likely hit by a “downburst,” or a very strong downward wind.
But naval experts remain confounded by the yacht’s sinking — it should have withstood the storm, and shouldn’t have sunk as quickly as it did.
The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the Telegraph.
An unnamed friend of the family told the Times that the TISG “should be ashamed” of the suit.
“Giovanni Costantino is a disgrace, desperately trying to shift blame,” the friend said.
“He rushed to the media before all the bodies had even been recovered, showing his lack of decency. Now, it seems, he wants to sue his own clients.”
