Statutory heritage listings, heritage council decisions and deliberations, other heritage listings and surveys, statement of significance.
The significance rests primarily with the presence of the Yacht Club on the Coffee Point location and the activity as a yachting facility in Applecross.
Physical Description
The Clubhouse is a one and two level building with verandahs and viewing deck set in a grassed area on the foreshore at Coffee Point, with bitumenised car parking behind the Clubhouse; a number of jetties project into the Swan River and the Canning River as moorings for yachts and launches.
The Beeliar Nyoongars used these areas as campsites and hunting grounds. In the summer months the areas provided the Aborigines with an abundance of food and other resources. The Aboriginal name for the Swan River is 'Derbal Yaragan', for the Canning River is 'Dyarlgarro' and for the mouth of the Canning River 'Wagoorjup' place of the Waugal. The South Perth Yacht Club was founded on 18 December 1945 and the inaugural meeting of the Club was held in the former Como Sea Scout Hall at Point Hampton, Como (on the foreshore near to present day Olives Reserve), on 18 December 1945. The Club held its first yacht race on 13 January 1946. The original clubhouse of the South Perth Yacht Club was an army disposal mess building. Club members volunteered to remove the building from its original site at Point Walter, Bicton, and to transport it to its new site on the Como foreshore. The Clubhouse was adjacent to the Como Sea Scout Hall and was officially opened on 18 November 1946. In 1960, due to the impending development of the Kwinana Freeway, the Club received State Government assistance to relocate to Coffee Point in Applecross. The Club is now referred to as the South of Perth Yacht Club.

South of Perth Yacht Club (SoPYC)
Location: Coffee Point, 2 Canning Beach Road, Applecross, WA 6153
The South of Perth Yacht Club enjoys a spectacular location on the southern side of Melville Water at the confluence of the Swan and Canning Rivers. The yacht club overlooks Perth City and caters for keelboats, power boats and dinghy sailors.
Located less than 10 minutes from Perth CBD, the Club offers a complete range of sailing, power boating, social activities and opportunities for all. Facilities include water pens, hard standing for trailerable yachts and powerboats, under-cover storage for racing dinghies and marine travel lift and slipping facilities. SoPYC also runs a Sailability program and radio-controlled yacht racing.
Two St Ayles Skiff kits were bought with the generous support of Club members, and both skiffs are now available for rowing by general Club members. Fifteen Club members (mostly retired gentlemen) were involved with the construction of the skiffs over about 15 months, mostly working on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. This built up a great camaraderie and many lasting friendships have been made.
Building started in June 2022 and “Valkyrie”, the first skiff, was launched in April 2023, whilst the second skiff “Ballina C” was completed in only 5 months and launched in October 2023. Both skiffs are rowed using hollow Oregon timber oars with Spotted Gum handles.

Our History
Royal perth is one of the world's most prestigious yacht clubs..
We can trace our origins back to 1841, just 12 years after Captain Fremantle arrived to establish the Swan River Colony, when a group of sailors staged a modest regatta to celebrate Foundation Day. History records further notable events in 1851 and 1859, and in 1865 this original group of pioneer sailors formalised the Perth Yacht Club. We are the third oldest in Australia after the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.
Early regattas included yacht races and gig rowing races, gigs being narrow ‘clinker-built ships’ boats. Duck hunts were also popular among members. In 1880 a jetty was built at the Club’s original location at the foot of William Street, a two minute walk from the central business district. The Clubhouse was opened in 1889 when the State’s population was just 49,000.
In 1890, on the recommendation of Governor Sir Frederic Napier Broome the Club received the title and prefix of Royal from Queen Victoria and at the same time it was announced that the Lords of the Admiralty had granted the Club the Royal Warrant to fly an un –defaced Blue ensign. It was a unanimous decisions at a General meeting in 1891 to dispense with the old blue PYC Burgee and adopt a new one. The design chosen was a white burgee or triangular flag bearing a red St George’s Cross and emblazoned with a St Edwards crown in the upper canton.
