Seattle Yacht Club

Many Seattle Yacht Club members cruise the waters of the Pacific Northwest in powerboats.  Whether touring the Club’s 10 Outstations, located from Gig Harbor in the south to Cortes Bay in the north, or exploring the fresh water lakes, our members tend to enjoy their time on the water. SYC has a number of interesting and exciting events for members with powerboats. These include formal events with fun interactive themes, local and long-range cruises from Puget Sound to the Canadian Gulf Islands, and monthly dinners with exciting and informative speakers. Our monthly club dinners include topics about boating in the Northwest and adventures from around the world. These dinner are also a fun way to meet with fellow Club members and share boating experiences.

Seattle Yacht Club also hosts Navigational Rallies (aka Predicted Log Racing) around Puget Sound. These navigational contests are a great opportunity for members to improve their knowledge of their boat and skills of predicting the boat’s performance around a designated course.

SYC is recognized among the leading yacht clubs of the world with a renowned comprehensive junior sailing program, in which the Junior Race Team is an integral part.  Our Junior Race Team draws upon a broad base of young sailors (open to the public) primarily from the SYC Summer Sailing School, SYC’s Northwest Interscholastic High School Sailing Team (HS Sailing), and community outreach programs.  The SYC Junior Race Team and HS Sailing provide youths, from ages 8 to 18, the opportunity to reach for competitive success at all levels while developing athletic skills, leadership, sportsmanship and a lifelong love for boating.  SYC has given rise to numerous generations of successful Pacific Northwest sailors, including multiple Olympic champions.  The SYC Race Team continues the Club’s legacy of achievement, representing SYC in local, regional, national and international competitions.

JOIN THE TEAM

Race team schedule, race team coach: cameron hoard.

Cameron has been the SYC Jr Race Team coach since 2011. Originally from Upstate NY, Cam has lived on both coasts, but has come to call the NW home.

Cam has been a sailing coach for the better part of 20 years. He has worked for various yacht clubs and sailing programs in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Seattle.

The SYC Jr Race Team does most of its year-round training on Shilshole Bay (Puget Sound), however Cam and the team travel all over the country competing in over 25 regattas every year. A busy training and regatta schedule is what makes the SYC Jr sailors the best in the North West!

The team has found lots of success under Coach Cam with SYC sailors winning national championships, qualifying for international regattas, and dominating the NW Youth Racing Circuit. It’s exciting and fun to work with such committed, talented, and hard working Jr sailors representing the club.

2017 was a big year for the team and the sailing department! They were honored to receive the Captain Joe Prosser Award, from US Sailing, for excellence in sailing instruction. The Jr sailors list of accomplishments is far too long to list here, so please stop Cam in the hallway or on the dock to hear about it all! Or join them at the SYC Jr sailing awards held every January, to meet the team, celebrate an amazing year, and help them kick off the successful season ahead. Go SYC!

I love Seattle, both the mountains and the surrounding waters, last year I spent Christmas there and that’s when I discovered some of the amazing areas we will look into in this article! Seattle is one of the best locations for sailing in the Pacific Northwest. Located on Puget Sound, it offers countless opportunities for sailors of all levels to explore the beautiful waterways that surround the city.

Here are the best day-sailing destinations in and around Seattle:

Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island

Port madison on bainbridge island, blake island marine state park, port of edmonds, port of kingston.

Read on to find out why these sailing destinations stand out from others in Seattle and where you can dock your boat in the city. And if you’re looking to polish your sailing skills, the article also explores some of the best sailing schools in Seattle.

Table of Contents

Is Seattle Good for Sailing?

Seattle is a great city for sailing as it offers something for everyone who wants to get out on the water. Visitors can explore the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean or explore the waterways that weave in and out around the city and its outlying islands.

Sailors especially love sailing in Seattle because of the abundance of water wildlife. At the right time of year, visitors can often see pods of orcas (killer whales), gray whales, and humpback whales as they migrate across the Pacific Ocean. Sometimes these massive mammals can be seen from the shoreline, but visitors will get the best views when they’re out on the water.

seattle yacht club sailing lessons

For those who want the sailing experience minus the work, Seattle offers numerous sailing cruises fully staffed by sailing professionals. These cruises take guests out of the marina and into the deep blue sea to explore the coastal region. Specialty tours, such as sunset cruises or whale watching excursions, are also available. These sailing companies also offer private charters that allow guests to make their personalized sailing adventure come true.

Although sailing is one of the best ways to explore the water in and around Seattle, other watercraft activities also offer a worthwhile experience. These include sightseeing cruises, dining cruises, kayaking, and canoeing. There are also fishing tours that allow for salmon and other saltwater fishing opportunities.

And when you rather be a passenger instead of a captain, you can access many of the surrounding islands via ferry. The ride offers a higher vantage point hence better views.

Best Day-Sailing Destinations in and Around Seattle

One of the best things about sailing in Seattle is the number of destinations you can explore in one day. Each offers something unique, but they all offer gorgeous views and beautiful sailing conditions.

To have an idea of what to expect while sailing in Seattle, check out this YouTube video of Robert Loyd sailing the Puget Sound, from Olympia to Seattle:

Here are some of the best day-sailing destinations Seattle has to offer.

Sailors can visit Bainbridge Island and dock their boat at Eagle Harbor, the island’s connection to Seattle. Upon disembarking, you can explore Waterfront Park, one of the most popular gathering places on the island.

This 5.5-acre park boasts open green spaces perfect for picnics and outdoor games. It also hosts annual festivals, summer concerts, and other special events.

If you’re looking for a peaceful day-sailing adventure that includes a bit of island time, look no further than Blake Island Marine State Park . Located a few miles from downtown Seattle, this state park sits on 472 acres with 5 mi (8.04 km) of saltwater beach shoreline.

The island is only accessible by boat, making it an ideal day-sailing destination.

Once there, guests can engage in different activities, including hiking, biking, fishing, crabbing, and bird and wildlife watching. Expect excellent views of Seattle and Mt. Rainier, majestic sunsets overlooking the Olympic Mountains, and beautiful beaches dotted with driftwood.

Located north of Seattle, the Port of Edmonds offers a large marina with special moorings for day-guests set aside. They also encourage overnight stays, where guests receive a welcome tote bag with various items, including a promotional booklet showcasing participating merchant offers.

The marina has over 600 moorage slips, so you’ll readily get a spot.

Once you get out of your boat, there’s plenty to do, including picnicking in the park, strolling on the beach, and shopping in nearby boutiques. There’s also no shortage of great restaurants, bars, and coffee shops within walking distance of the marina.

seattle yacht club sailing lessons

If you head to the northeastern shore of Bainbridge Island, you’ll find Port Madison . The inner harbor in this beautiful and scenic location is well protected by the hills surrounding the water.

After docking, visitors can explore the parks, beaches, trails, eateries, bars, and art studios this part of Bainbridge offers. Paper and Leaf, the island’s only cannabis boutique, is a must-see if you’re a cannabis partaker.

Port Madison Indian Reservation

Port Madison Indian Reservation is home to the Suquamish people hence a port rich in history. It’s located in the Central Puget Sound Region of Washington State—a 30-minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle.

History lovers will enjoy a visit to the Suquamish Museum, where they get to see never before exhibited Suquamish artifacts.

Other cultural sites in the reservation include Chief Seattle’s (also Si’ahl or Sealth) gravesite and the Old Man House Park.

You can also do a bit of recreational gambling in the Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort or golf at the nearby White Horse Golf Club.

Located on the Kitsap Peninsula, Poulsbo is affectionately known as “Little Norway.” The historic downtown district still maintains a quaint Norwegian setting to date. Visitors can enjoy museums, galleries, shops, eateries, breweries, wineries, and day spas located throughout the city. Or engage in more active leisure, including biking, hiking, kayaking, and golfing.

If you want an experience beyond the norm, consider scheduling your visit to coincide with one of the many festivals and annual events Poulsbo holds.

One such festival is the Viking Fest held every May. It involves flags, a procession of children, marching bands, and traditional Norwegian costumes.

The Poulsbo Marina features 130 guest moorage slips. Available amenities and facilities include restrooms, showers, laundry, and a fuel dock.

Located north of Seattle, the Port of Kingston is a vibrant port community that features typically readily available guest moorage. But with only 49 guest dock slips, you can reserve a guest dock slip online beforehand to avoid disappointment. Amenities include water and electric hook-ups, bathrooms and showers, picnic tables, and coin-operated laundry.

There are several places to dine and shop in the surrounding community. And you also have the Mike Wallace Park, where local community organizations, such as the Kingston Farmers Market, often hold events. Additionally, you can access veterinary, dental, and financial services nearby.

Marinas in the Port of Seattle

seattle yacht club sailing lessons

The Port of Seattle offers five marinas where sailboats can be docked, allowing easy access to all the shopping, dining, and entertainment venues available across the city.

Bell Harbor Marina

Bell Harbor Marina is Seattle’s only downtown recreational marina. It offers unparalleled access to Pike Place Market, the Seattle Center, the Seattle Aquarium, and the infamous Space Needle. It has room for up to 70 boats at one time, and moorage is available year-round. Additionally, there are multiple essential amenities for long-haul sailors, such as showers, garbage/recycling disposal, and sewage pump-out services.

Fisherman’s Terminal

Fisherman’s Terminal is home to the North Pacific fishing fleet and caters to more commercial watercraft. However, a few moorings are available for recreational sailors, including monthly and day-guest users. There are several restaurants and shops on-site and free parking for up to three days. Other amenities include showers, electrical hook-ups, potable water, and sewage services.

Harbor Island Marina

Harbor Island Marina is the best moorage location in West Seattle. It can accommodate up to 77 boats at a time and provides easy access to neighborhoods in both West Seattle and the South Sound. In addition to monthly and guest moorage slots, the marina offers liveaboard moorages for those who want to live on their watercraft. Available amenities include showers, metered power, and a self-service pump-out.

Salmon Bay Marina

Salmon Bay Marina is located just outside the Ballard Locks and is unique in offering both covered and uncovered monthly moorage in freshwater. It’s within walking distance of Fisherman’s Terminal, where guests can access restaurants and shops. This marina includes access to typical amenities such as showers and garbage disposal facilities and exceptional amenities like laundry and storage facilities.

Shilshole Bay Marina

Shilshole Bay Marina is the largest marina in Seattle, with over 1,400 moorage slots. It accommodates day, monthly, and liveaboard guests and has one of the largest and most active boating communities. Boat groups and yacht clubs especially love Shilshole for its wide fairways and docks and ample space for different trail users. Sailors can eat and drink in various restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops around the marina.

Best Sailing Schools in Seattle

With plenty of locations to dock and moor your boat, Seattle is a good sailing destination for experienced sailors. However, the city is also a good place for beginner sailors to get their sea legs and develop fundamental sailing skills.

There are several sailing schools in Seattle. Each offers basic sail training for newbies and advanced training for those looking to perfect their sailing skills.

Here are the best sailing schools in Seattle.

The Seattle Sailing Club

The Seattle Sailing Club is one of the most active ASA-certified sailing schools countrywide. ASA stands for American Sailing Association, whose sailing standards are accepted nationally and internationally. The school’s instructors are accredited by the United States Coast Guard and ASA, assuring you of your safety during training and an enjoyable experience.

You’ll start by learning the basics, including terminology, safety, tacking/jibing, rigging, and seamanship. Courses will include classroom training and hands-on training. The latter will initially occur on a keelboat then a tiller-steered powerboat. And as you progress to higher-level sailing courses, you’ll be able to train on boats 30-feet (9.14-meter) or larger.

Experienced sailors looking to polish their skills on select topics, say, navigation or anchoring, can also take classes.

The Puget Sound Sailing Institute

The Puget Sound Sailing Institute is another ASA-certified sailing school. Although based in Tacoma, some PSSI classes are taught in other locations, including Seattle, Des Moines, and Anacortes.

Those new to sailing can take Basic Keelboat classes in Bell Harbor. Lessons will include online videos, textbooks, and on-the-water instruction. After completing the course successfully, you should be able to charter and skipper a 27 ft (8.23 m) or smaller boat in normal weather unsupervised.

Afterward, you can take Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Cruising classes (check the website for available locations and dates). With these additional classes, you will gain the ability to charter and skipper a boat for extended overnight trips in all weather with no hired crew.

The Seattle Yacht Club

The Seattle Yacht Club , located on Portage Bay in Seattle, has a sailing school taught by US Sailing Level 1 instructors. They have adult sailing lessons that are suitable for beginner sailors. Classes launch from the yacht club and primarily sail in Portage Bay.

The Vanguard-15 (V-15) is the primary training boat they use. But intermediate and advanced sailors also practice their boat-handling and racing skills on the Olympic-Class Laser. In addition to sailing classes for adults, SYC also runs a Youth Summer Sailing School that admits students as young as seven years old.

Here children and teens learn basic sailing maneuvers or better their skills, then participate in a learn-to-race week. During the week, they learn racing rules, basic racing tactics, and more advanced boat handling techniques. At the week’s end, students participate in a regatta.

Final Thoughts

Given its location on the water in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is an ideal location for sailing. There are plenty of day-sailing destinations, including Blake Island Marine State Park and Port Madison on Bainbridge Island. Each offers stunning views and various things to do, from dining and shopping to sightseeing and biking.

Sailors can moor their boats at one of the many marinas in Seattle. And those who want to learn to sail or improve their skills can register for lessons at any one of several sailing schools in Seattle.

Seattle Yacht Club

Founded in 1892, Seattle Yacht Club is one of our country’s most active and long-established yacht clubs. With facilities ranging from the historic main station on Portage Bay, to ten outstations located along the shores of Washington and British Columbia, the club offers an outstanding group of properties for use by its more than 2,500 members.

From the Commodore:

It gives me great pleasure to confirm the commitment of the Seattle Yacht Club Board of Trustees and its members to the goals and mission of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Our Fleet Captain Sail, Dave Ferguson and his committee, and Past Commodore, Chris Otorowski, will be working together on the member matching fund program that I expect will exceed the Founding Club level.

We look forward to watching the progress of the NSHOF and its home in Annapolis.

The Pacific Northwest waters, aristocratic pines and views of Mt. Rainier, Baker and the Olympics provided inspiration for Chief Sealth’s (Seattle) native peoples and SYC respects this heritage while developing its own traditions and stewardship. In the 1880s Puget Sound’s Budlong’s Boat House was the locale of the first gathering place of SYC yachtsmen followed in 1882 by the moorage on Battery Street at Brighton’s Boat House. The first Clubhouses built for a formally organized Seattle Yacht Club were in 1892 and 1909 in West Seattle.  Presently the Portage Bay clubhouse (1919) between Lakes Union and Washington offers a colonial style with classical elegance and uncovered and covered moorages. It has been on the National Register of Historical Places since 2006. In addition, there are ten beautiful outstations extending from south Puget Sound through Canadian waters. They are Gig Harbor, Elliott Bay, Port Madison and Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island, Henry Island and Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, and Ganges, Ovens Island, Garden Bay and Cortes Bay in Canada. The marine environment is protected by SYC’s Code of Ethics and negotiations with the City of Seattle. Reciprocity with U.S. and international yacht clubs exists.

seattleyc02

Since 1928 SYC has participated in powerboat predicted log racing’s annual International Cruiser Race, the Capital to Capitol Race. Hosted by SYC in 1936, the attendance was the highest of any U.S. cruising event to that date. In the 1940s the IPBA made it a family event. Today SYC hosts the IPBA Stimson Cup and participates in other IPBA and local races.

The belief that “everyone who wants to be on the water should be” underlies programs for the community such as the 1935 Shut In Cruise when 50 SYC boats took patients in wheelchairs and on stretchers for a Lake Washington cruise. World War II veterans were taken on similar cruises. Today’s Annual Special People’s Cruise was inspired by SYC women who arranged Christmas cruises for the Fircrest clients. SYC’s Opening Day, modeled in part by the city’s 1911 Potlatch celebration has the largest boating parade and international crew races in the world. SYC sponsors the largest fund raising event in boating, the Leukemia Cup Regatta and the SYC Foundation provides funding for Youth Sailing classes and community boating projects.

Protection of maritime waters and racing abound. SYC formed the first Pacific coastal squadron to teach motorboat navigation and to cooperate with the U.S. government in 1916. During World War II SYC’s Flotilla 24, the largest civilian squadron in the U.S., patrolled Pacific inland waters with private small and large luxury yachts. Pleasure boating was dormant but racing continued. The hydroplane races with SYC’s Slo-Mo IV and V won the Gold Cup 1950-1954 and put Seattle and Seafair on the map. The hydroplane era continues with the SYC burgee on winning boats and thousands of spectators watching the races on Lake Washington and on television.

Pleasure boating resumed after World War II. In 1964 SYC was invited to join the Cruising Club of America and continues to host several of their events. The latter’s goal of promoting cruising by amateurs and its interest in seamanship, navigation and handling of small vessel is in keeping with SYC’s philosophy and support of what the juniors call “people who like to mess around in boats”. Boating education at SYC has always been a priority for youth and adult members and non-members. Currently it is provided in Lasers, Vanguard 15’s, and Optimistist dinghies. Pleasure boating for adults, families and the public is provided in Club and private member boats.

Competing in international races in the 1980s again demonstrated SYC’s racing skills. Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals were brought home. The SYC burgee flew on One World in the 2003 America’s Cup Race. SYC women have won world championships in rowing and the Adams Cup for sailing.  World involvement is further demonstrated by hosting of the International Council of Yacht Clubs Forum in 2011. This is the first time it was held in the United States and 14 countries were represented by numerous delegates.

To insure “the most fun for the most of us” the SYC committee system allows for diversified interest groups and activities for all members. The Men’s and Women’s groups have luncheons with speakers and programs to educate and entertain. Parties, balls, dinner dances and children’s events occur regularly. The annual Commodore’s Ball with the Grand Fourteen Yacht Clubs in the area is a gala event. Potlatch, a weekend of water games, races and feasting at Port Madison, is an example of the family centered events for juniors, intermediates and regular members.

Seattle Yacht Club has a tradition of pride in its members who come from every socioeconomic level. Many have made significant contributions to navigational science and member volunteerism is basic to the Club. The 1937 Board of Trustees stated: the club should cater to the average class of gentlemen yachtsman” attempting to please the aristocrats and also the members with small boats regardless of financial position. SYC also has pride in its clubhouse and the city it is named after. The beacon light on top of the Portage Bay clubhouse was installed by SYC members and the Coast Guard and its spire is shown on nautical charts as a private stationary aid to navigation. It beckons you to join the fun of a cultural icon and continue to make history.

Rebuilding Paradise: The Bitter End Yacht Club’s Inspiring Comeback

By: Shannon Sinnard Destinations

Nestled at the northeastern tip of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, the Bitter End Yacht Club has long been a premier maritime destination for sailors. For years, this iconic resort has drawn seafarers from around the globe, offering a serene escape amidst the sparkling waters of the Caribbean.

While the term “bitter end” often refers to the final part of a rope or chain, the phrase can also signify reaching the farthest point or the end destination of a long or difficult journey. The founders of the Bitter End Yacht Club chose this name to reflect both its geographical location and the spirit of adventure and perseverance inherent to sailors. For those who navigate to this end-of-the-line point, the BEYC stands as a haven where their journey culminates in beauty and tranquility. And, for many, it has long stood as a cherished traditional stop when exploring the waters of the BVI.

A Legendary Past, a Devastating Blow

In more recent years, the Bitter End’s name has embodied not only a physical destination but also a symbolic one. The iconic BEYC experienced a devastating blow in September 2017 when Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in history, wreaked havoc on the Caribbean, leaving the Bitter End Yacht Club in ruins. The devastation was profound, with buildings flattened, boats destroyed, and the once-thriving resort reduced to rubble.

While many Bitter End enthusiasts were devastated to hear of the destruction Hurricane Irma left in her wake, the iconic Bitter End Yacht Club kept its loyal fans updated via its website , detailing both the damage and community efforts to rebuild this beloved BVI institution.

Rising from the Ashes

Having now been rebuilt and risen from the devastation of Hurricane Irma, the Bitter End’s name resonates even more with the idea of enduring and overcoming challenges – much like the sailors who venture to the farthest reaches to get there.

After the storm, the Bitter End Yacht Club faced a long and arduous journey to recovery. But the spirit of resilience and determination among its community never wavered. Fast forward to today, and the Bitter End Yacht Club has not only been rebuilt but has been reimagined, standing as a testament to the power of recovery and the adventurous spirit that made it famous.

A New Era for the Bitter End Yacht Club

The reopening of the Bitter End Yacht Club marks a new chapter in its storied history. The rebuilt resort seamlessly blends the charm and character of its past with modern amenities and environmentally friendly practices. Here’s a glimpse of what visitors can now expect:

State-of-the-Art Marina

The heart of the Bitter End experience, the marina, has been meticulously restored and upgraded, offering deep-water slips that can accommodate yachts up to 200 feet, along with enhanced dockside services. Sailors can enjoy top-notch amenities including electrical hook-ups, fuel, ice, showers, rubbish disposal, and laundry facilities. Additionally, guests have access to the resort’s swimming pool. The BEYC also boasts one of the best deep-water anchorages in the Caribbean, providing many of the same amenities as the docking facilities.

Culinary Delights

Dining at the Bitter End is an experience in itself. The resort’s restaurants feature locally sourced ingredients, celebrating Caribbean flavors with a gourmet twist. Whether it’s a casual beachside meal or an elegant dinner under the stars, the culinary offerings are sure to delight every palate.

Adventure and Exploration

Environmental Stewardship

The Bitter End Yacht Club has embraced sustainability as a core principle in its rebuilding efforts. The resort utilizes renewable energy sources, practices water conservation, and is committed to preserving the natural beauty of the BVI. Initiatives such as coral reef restoration and marine conservation programs are integral to its operations, ensuring that the Bitter End remains a pristine paradise for future generations.

A Bright Future

From its storied past to its recent resurgence, the Bitter End Yacht Club is more than just a return to business; it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and the indomitable spirit of the BVI. UW dock renovations pose threat to 75-year sailing tradition, yacht club students say

S tudents in the Washington Yacht Club (WYC) accuse the University of Washington (UW) of working to stop a 75-year history of teaching students to sail.

Those students told KOMO News that the UW’s plans to renovate the docks near Husky Stadium will eliminate the docks they use to store their 70 boats, thus taking away their ability to teach students to sail.

“It would really mean, like a death blow to the community,” said Renee Chien, the current Rear Commodore of WYC.

The U.W. has plans to repair and remove docks. The total dock space will be reduced by 4,000 square feet.

“And the university has actually given us a statement as of March that we will no longer be able to keep beyond one boat on the dock,” said Chien.

UW told KOMO News that the club only needs to move some of the club's boats short term.

“We have up to 75 boats. We’ve got everything from sailboats up to a 44-foot ocean-going vessel and everything in between,” said William Rae, another member of WYC.

Once the renovation is completed in 2025, the university told KOMO that UW recreation will no longer maintain dock storage space, so the WYC and the Union Bay Rowing Club would each be able to maintain just one boat at the dock.

“It would mean the loss of something that I have poured my heart and soul into,” said Chien. “And I feel like that is the case for most people that I work with in the WYC, who like are united by their common love of sailing.”

Chien told KOMO she just joined the WYC in November, to learn to sail and loves it so much, she’s already been out sailing 22 of the past 23 days.

“I grew up in Taipei, Taiwan and as an international student, I wouldn’t have felt like my roots were planted firmly anywhere. I thought maybe I would stay in Seattle maybe I wouldn’t, but I didn’t feel attached and it was really because of sailing and because of my access to the water and this newfound connection that I have with the Puget Sound that I feel like I would like to stay here to keep sailing and keep building the community here,” explained Chien.

Perhaps the best part of getting out on one of the 70 boats to learn to sail, is the price. Students pay just $39 per quarter.

“And if we lose that that’s a huge loss to people being able to enter into a sport that traditionally has such a high barrier,” said Rae.

Sailing lessons in Seattle cost several hundred dollars a month.

“We’re pretty unique, definitely in the Pacific Northwest, and really for student-run organizations we believe we're unique in the country,” said Rae.

UW's tradition of sailgating right outside Husky Stadium is another unique Pacific Northwest tradition and some accuse the University of putting profits from events like this over student benefit.

The renovation plan calls for adding new docks for large sailgating boats plus greater access for students and the public to rent kayaks and canoes.

“And we just want to emphasize that kayak rentals are $19 per hour our quarterly membership is $39 a quarter,” said Chien.

UW told KOMO that they are prioritizing Rec Clubs with the new waterfront plan, to expand student participation.

Construction on the docks and beach at the UW is scheduled to start in January and UW told KOMO that they are still working with the WYC through this process.

Yacht Club, which continues Saturday, is the first major rock and pop festival on Harriet Island since Live Nation’s River’s Edge Music Festival in 2012. Despite promising St. Paul a five-year commitment, the concert promoting giant lost enough money to convince them to pull out after a single year.

Live Nation owns 51% of Yacht Club organizers C3 Presents, an Austin, Texas, company that’s also behind Austin City Limits Music Festival, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and the modern-day Lollapalooza. But Live Nation apparently allows C3 to follow its own path.

Some concertgoers complained about food and drink prices, and long lines, but in terms of getting in and around the site, the infrastructure and general vibe, C3’s experience in mounting festivals became quite clear by late Friday afternoon, when Joan Jett and the Blackhearts played an hourlong set to a large, grinning and dancing crowd. (Organizers did not release an attendance number, but have said they expect more than 30,000 people each of the two days.)

On Thursday, Yacht Club’s social media announced reunited Southern rockers the Black Crowes had pulled out of their planned set at 8 p.m. Friday due to “illness in the band.” (The Crowes, however, did not address their absence online.) Rather than drafting an 11th hour replacement, the festival reworked the schedule and gave several acts more time on stage. Local band Durry got pushed nearly two hours later into the schedule for a set that started at 5:40, while Seattle indie folk act the Head and the Heart graduated to the Black Crowes’ planned 8 p.m. slot.

Local favorites Gully Boys opened the festival at 1 p.m. on the main stage followed by fellow homegrown act Harbor and Home on the smaller stage. From that point on, performances alternated between the two stages, with just minutes between bands.

Sets from buzzy country artist Morgan Wade and indie rockers Michigander paved the way for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, who earned cheers for their famous covers “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah),” “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “Crimson and Clover” and “Everyday People” as well as band originals “I Hate Myself for Loving You” and “Bad Reputation.” They also covered the Replacements’ “Androgynous,” with Jett giving a shout out to the late Minneapolis band and their leader Paul Westerberg.

RELATED: What to know if you’re headed to the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter took the stage prior to Gwen Stefani’s performance and asked the crowd to applaud the police and other city workers who helped make the festival happen. He also suggested it would return for a second year in 2025.

Stefani — who was promoted as a headliner along with Friday’s final act Alanis Morissette and Saturday’s main attraction the Red Hot Chili Peppers — performed with dancers and video at what sounded like a louder volume than the previous bands. She told the audience her brother-in-law is from Minnesota, so that sort of makes her a local. She then pulled out her husband, former “The Voice” coach Blake Shelton, to sing their current single “Purple Irises.”

It’s been some 18 years since her last substantial solo hit, but Stefani has remained in the spotlight thanks to her high-profile husband and the semi-regular duet singles they’ve released over the last eight years. Stefani and her band No Doubt reunited in April to headline Coachella to much acclaim, but have yet to announce any future plans together. Whatever happens, Friday’s crowd — which was heavy on geriatric millennials and Gen Xers with a smattering of boomers — gave Stefani a warm reception that matched the ideal summertime weather that graced the festival on Friday.
