4 Best Ways to Find Sailboats for Sale

4 Best Ways to Find Sailboats for Sale | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

June 15, 2022

With so many different sailboats for sale out there, you may be wondering how to find the right one for you? Where do you even start? Well, if you love riding the waves in comfort, then getting the right sailboat for sale should be a priority. You need to know how much you can spend, your boating needs, know the resale value of the boat when it's time to sell it, and many other tips to safeguard your interests when looking for the right sailboat for you.

Imagine calling that shiny new boat sitting at the dock yours! Imagine climbing aboard on a perfect sunny day with your friends and loved ones ready to soak in the sun and have a good time! Most of us, whether experienced sailors or just new to the sailing world, always dream of owning a perfect sailboat. But where do you even start on this tremendous journey? Whether you're in the early planning stages or haven't had time yet to attend one of those big yacht shows, the most important thing is to keep your enthusiasm in check, think straight, and use the best tactics to find the right sailboat for sale.

Buying a sailboat, used or new, is no small feat. It's not like going down to the grocery store and picking some tomatoes or a loaf of bread. Of course, not all sailboats will do for you. You have to consider your budget. Can you readily afford it including the refit and/or outfitting needs? Does it meet your sailing needs in terms of crew and intended sailing objectives? Is it sellable when you want to upgrade? These are some of the most important things to keep in mind.

So unless you're a sailboat expert, you need to know the best ways and tactics to find the right sailboat for sale. In this comprehensive guide, we'll share with you the best tactics to help you find sailboats for sale and things to consider before buying a sailboat . Of course, you'll have to do thorough research before making the final decision and this is just part of the research. If anything, you certainly do not want to buy a sailboat that you don't like.

Know Your Goals

Before you even start searching on the internet for a sailboat, it's crucial to know your goals and have a vision for the type of sailboat that you want. To make it a lot easier for you, we'll break this down into various parts.

How Do You Plan to Use the Sailboat?

There's no denying that sailors have big dreams. The idea of casting off all your on-land worries and sailing away to an exotic place is not only alluring but also relieving. But as a sailor, it's always a good idea, to be honest with yourself and acknowledge how you're planning to use the sailboat.

Are you planning to sail on the nearby inland lake or are you planning to live aboard while sailing to faraway places? Are you planning for occasional weekend trips overnight? These are just some of the few things that you must consider. If you're planning for ocean crossings, you may need a bluewater cruiser that's perfectly capable of enduring everything that Mother Nature brings your way.

Another thing that you must consider is where you will be sailing. You have to keep in mind that sailing on the Atlantic Ocean is a very different beast from sailing in your nearby hometown lake. As such, the boat you go for must be suitable for the environment where you'll be doing much of your sailing.

How Big of a Boat Do You Need?

The size of the boat that you choose is of great importance. As a sailor, you should go for a boat that's large enough to meet all your sailing needs. Are you planning to cruise by yourself, with your family, or friends? Do you have plans of entertaining guests aboard your sailboat? Are you planning to sail overnight and thereby need sleeping accommodations? Do you want a crew to join you on your sailing adventure? These are some of the factors that will influence the size of the boat that you go for.

You have to keep in mind that nothing will enhance your comfort aboard a sailboat more than size. Everything on the boat can be changed except size, so you have to be very careful. But then again, large-sized boats come with higher maintenance costs.

What's Your Budget?

Having a budget for buying your sailboat is essential in creating the right timeline. Maybe you want to make ocean passages but your current budget doesn't allow for it. Under such circumstances, you may have to go for a cheaper or smaller boat. Alternatively, you continue chartering or borrowing a friend's boat until you save enough money to buy the boat of your dreams.

What Type of Boat Best Suits Your Needs?

It wouldn't make much sense to start looking for a boat if you do not know the type of boat that you want and what you're planning to use it for. So if you're still new to the sailing game and do not have much experience with sailboats, you should take some time and get to know different types of sailboats and how they're used as well as their construction material.

The most important thing is to have a clear idea of how you intend to use the vessel and make a decision based on what suits your needs.

Get Expert Advice

Knowing exactly what your goals are as far as buying a sailboat is concerned will make your work a lot easier. But even if you know exactly what you want, talking to an expert, say an experienced yacht broker or a previous owner will make you more informed in whatever decisions that you make.

Even though this can be a bit challenging, it's crucial that you know the questions to ask. Get them to explain to you some of the things that you do not understand. You shouldn't be ashamed to admit that you don't understand something and there's nothing wrong with asking. Again, do not fall for pretty interiors or flashy boat names if that particular boat doesn't serve your needs or is beyond your budget.

By getting expert advice, you'll save much of your precious time by talking with someone with the know-how and this might even make it a lot easier to find the boat of your dreams if he/she is well-connected. In most cases, an expert spends most of his/her day in the boating industry and is better placed to have more information.

Where to Find Sailboats for Sale

Looking at different sailboats with the main intention of finding the one that fits your needs and budget can be challenging but it shouldn't. If anything, this should be the most enjoyable part but only if you know what to do. These days, the internet makes it a lot easier to do your research from the comfort of your home before even thinking about working with a broker yet. This is because there are a number of superb websites that will give you incisive information and education that can help you find the right boat for you.

Let's take a look at some of these sites. Remember, they have several sailboats for sale from fairly priced vessels to luxury boats.

This site is known to list both used and new sailboats from its member yacht brokers. It is perfectly designed to let you filter whatever you want to know about the boat. The filter allows you to narrow down your search based on new or used, manufacturer, year of manufacture, price, length or size, sail or powerboat, and many more. It also offers additional info relating to marine insurance, advice on how to work with a yacht broker, and even lenders. In essence, this is an all-under-one-roof type of website.

SuperYachts

As the name suggests, this is a perfect site if you're looking for something that's more luxurious. This, however, doesn't mean that you can't find an affordable sailboat on the site. Most of the vessels listed on this site are below $5 million, so you can find a vessel that's within your budget.

The best thing about this site is that it always strives to be a full-service nautical website. In addition to boat listings, this is a great platform to find luxury lifestyle posts, sailing videos, destination guides, and yacht business directory.

This is a great platform for anyone looking for high-end yachts. In other words, do not expect to find a lot of vessels worth below $1 million. If anything, most of them are priced from $10 million and above but you'll be guaranteed of getting some very nice vessels.

Apart from listing, this site offers other sailing services such as chartering, repairs, new yacht building, finding a crew, and many other things that you may need if you have a few extra millions to spend sailing around the world.

Yacht Harbour

Sometimes you have to check worldwide if you're looking for a sailboat of your dreams and there's no better place to do so than on Yacht Harbour . This is a Monaco-based site that will help you get the boat of your dreams even if you live in the United States.

This is also a great site if you want to get updated on the current happenings in the sailing world. It will connect you with fellow sailors, chartering companies, best sailing destinations , and any other thing that you might need to make your sailing adventure more enjoyable. As far as finding sailboats for sale is concerned, this can be a perfect site is a few million dollars is a reasonable price for you.

Are You Planning to Purchase a New or Used Sailboat?

When it comes to finding the right sailboat for you, one of the key factors should be your ability to buy new or used and this generally depends on your personal finances. One of the main advantages of purchasing a new sailboat is that it will be ready for your sailing adventures the moment it becomes yours.

On the contrary, you may have to spend some time and even more money on repairs and upgrades if you buy a used sailboat. As such, you should consider whether you have the time to shop around for the required gear and whether you'll work on the boat yourself or hire someone else to do the job. In other words, these are some of the things that you must take into consideration when calculating the total budget for buying a used sailboat .

One of the main advantages of buying a new sailboat is the warranty that comes with it. This is a promise by the manufacturer that it guarantees that the vessel will serve you without any glitches for a given number of years and they'll provide service and repairs during that time.

Determine the Condition and Value of the Sailboat by Getting the Right Surveyor

By now, you've probably identified a few boats that fit within your budget and objectives. However, you certainly do not want to buy a boat in bad condition or overpay for it. This is why you should get the right surveyor to help you determine the real condition of the boat beyond its shiny exterior and to determine whether it's worth going for.

Going for an experienced boat surveyor is, without a doubt, one of the most crucial parts if you want to find the best sailboat for you and your needs. A surveyor can give you the accurate value of the boat not just in terms of the visual condition but also on its overall condition. An independent surveyor will give you an in-depth condition of the boat and a snapshot of its value.

Simply put, you're going to spend thousands of dollars if not millions on the sailboat so you need to hire a qualified marine surveyor to give you the exact condition of the boat and help you determine whether or not it's worth buying. In essence, the best way to avoid buying a boat with significant issues is by hiring a professional marine surveyor. He/she should conduct a thorough condition and valuation survey, as well as a sea trial, and help you in determining whether the boat has any major issue.

You can also hire a professional technician separately to inspect the boat's engine, electrical work, deck and hull integrity, safety equipment, and many more.

Avoid Common Buyer Mistakes

Like any other industry out there, the boating industry is full of scammers who may use a lot of tricks and scams to dupe you of your hard-earned money all in the name of selling your sailboat. It's, therefore, upon you to be extra careful with whomever you're dealing with and proceed with extra caution if anything seems unusual or when the deal is too good.

Here are some of the common mistakes that you should avoid.

Do NOT Buy On the Internet

As much as we've listed some sites that we believe can be of great help when looking to find sailboats for sale, we wouldn't advise you to buy the boat of your dreams from the comfort of your couch. You always have to keep in mind that everything looks great on the internet and you'll not have the actual feeling until you board the boat and see it for yourself. In other words, those excellent boat pictures on the internet can be extremely misleading, so however busy you're, you should create time and get to see the boat in real life. If possible, you should even take it for a sea trial before committing.

And even if you've been spending most of your free time on the internet in search of the boat of your dreams, you should not just rely on the information that you get. Instead, create time and go and see the boat in person. It may not be of much interest when you see it in person but you'll still learn a thing or two and this may be of much help later.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that everyone always has an opinion. As such, you should always avoid taking advice from sailors who do a very different kind of sailing to the one you're planning to do. This, however, doesn't mean that you can't follow friendly advice. Do your research, write everything down, remain open-minded to suggestions, and check everything including the resale value of the boat. If you have reservations for the boat, just remember that there's always a much better boat out there.

Avoid Escrow Scam and PayPal Variation

In most cases, a boat seller will suggest using an escrow service and may recommend something that sounds legit. Well, just don't fall prey to some cheap scam by transferring your money to anyone. You might find yourself on the wrong end of a scam and you'll probably never hear from the said seller ever again. The best thing is to tread carefully and use legitimate avenues if you want to seal the deal.

Take a Look at the Resale Value

One of the common mistakes that you may want to avoid, especially if you're a first-time buyer is that you'll use the boat forever. There comes a time when you'll want to upgrade. You'll want to find a better or even bigger boat or hang up your sailing boots and this may mean that you may have to sell the boat.

As such, it is of great importance to look at the resale value of the boat. While this isn't written on sand, you should go for a vessel that may fetch you some money in the future should you want to get rid of it.

Learn How to Spot a Bargain

Although this can be quite difficult if you're not a boat expert, you should learn how to spot a bargain or a vessel worth owning. From the asking price to the extra costs that are required to ensure that the boat is safe and functional, see how these figures compare to other similar boats in the marketplace. If it's lower then you're in a good deal but if it's significantly higher, then you may have to talk with the seller to reduce his/her asking price. You'll also have to consider boat maintenance costs and do not underestimate the costs of fixing little things.

Have a Proper Sales Contract

It doesn't matter whether you're buying a brand new sailboat from a dealer or a used sailboat directly from its current owner, the best way to avoid getting scammed and protecting your interest is by outlining the terms of the sales in a sales contract and in writing. With a written agreement, you will minimize or eliminate altogether problems that could later come back to haunt you when a sweet deal at the marine turns into a sour and heart-wrenching case in court.

It is advisable to get a qualified lawyer to write the contract and ensure that both parties sign the contract. Everything including names, addresses, description of the boat and engine, purchase price, the condition of the boat at the time of delivery, and buyer's contingencies among other things must be in the sales contract.

You shouldn't forget about the "after the sale details". Of course, you've done your research and found the boat of your dreams. The price is probably right and you've reached an agreement with the seller. You've now paid the seller and the boat is now free to be yours. But wait a minute, there is still a caveat: the boat will only be yours when the seller signs over the title and provides other legal proof of ownership.

These documents may include boat registration cards and insurance policies. You have to make sure that the boat's Hull Identification Number is the same as the one listed on the records. You should also confirm whether there are any liens recorded on the boat by calling the U.S. Coast Guard documentation division.

Avoid Being on the Wrong End of Insurance Blues

Even though most states do not require you to have boat insurance, this doesn't mean that you do not need it. Having boat insurance is of great importance and will help you in the event that something bad happens to your boat.

To this end, buying the sailboat of your dream is, without a doubt, an exciting purchase. However, you should never take it lightly as it can leave you with a very bad and regrettable decision staring at you at the dock. As such, you should arm yourself with mountains of information and the best tactics to find sailboats for sale. With this, you stand the chance of finding the boat of your dreams and the opportunity to enjoy delightful sailing adventures with minimal hassle.

Do not be in a hurry and do the right due diligence. At the end of the day, it's all about having fun and achieving your sailing objectives with no worries in the world. Happy sailing!

Planned Outage for Some Cornell Lab Services

Several Cornell Lab of Ornithology services will be unavailable beginning March 19 through 6:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern time on March 21 . This is a one-time disruption while we migrate more than 1.6 billion eBird observations and additional project data to new servers. After the move, our websites will have improved reliability, stability, and room to grow. Thank you for your understanding during this outage.

Don’t worry, your data (checklists, media, Bird Academy courses, Merlin life list, etc.) will be safe during the migration and will be unaffected when we come back online.

Unavailable: The following websites and services will be down during this period:

  • eBird.org , including eBird portals, eBird Alerts, the eBird API, eBird Science, and data downloads
  • Macaulay Library
  • Birds of the World

Partially affected: Several Cornell Lab projects will remain up but services that require a login will be unavailable:

  • Bird Academy login and store will be unavailable. Users will be able to access most course materials if they were logged in to the site before the outage. Snap ID quizzes will not function during the outage.
  • NestWatch and Project FeederWatch login and data entry will be unavailable both on the website and the app. Please record your data on paper and enter it after the outage ends.
  • eBird Mobile app : The Explore and My eBird functions will not work during the outage. You can use the app to create checklists and then submit them after the outage ends. Your eBird data will be safe.
  • Merlin Bird ID app : Sound ID will continue to work, as well as Photo ID, Step-by-Step, and Explore, using your recent locations only. You will not be able to save sightings, refresh your life list, update your location, or log in to your account. These functions will return when the outage ends and your data will be safe.

Unaffected: The following sites will continue to function as normal:

  • Cornell Lab of Ornithology institutional website

Navy to Christen Submarine Idaho

The Navy will christen its newest Virginia-class attack submarine, the future USS Idaho (SSN 799), during a 10 a.m. EDT ceremony March 16, at General Dynamics Electric Boat, in Groton, Connecticut.    The Honorable Nickolas H. Guertin, Assistant Secretary of the Navy (ASN) for Research, Development, and Acquisition (RDA), will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Senior representatives from the Navy, the shipbuilders, Congress, and the state of Idaho are also expected to speak.

In a twist on the time-honored Navy tradition of breaking a bottle of sparkling wine across the bow, the Submarine's Sponsor, Ms. Teresa Stackley, will christen the boat with water she has collected from several lakes in Idaho. Stackley is the daughter of a Navy Sailor and is the spouse of the Honorable Sean Stackley, a former Naval officer who served as ASN (RDA) from 2008 to 2017.

The submarine, which began construction in 2017, will be the 26th Virginia-class fast attack submarine and the fifth U.S. Navy ship to be christened with the name Idaho. The last ship named Idaho was battleship BB 42, commissioned in 1919.

Though landlocked, the state of Idaho prides itself in its rich Naval history and continuing contributions to the fleet. The Navy's Acoustic Research Detachment on Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho's largest and deepest body of water, is a state-of-the-art facility that supports research, development, testing, and evaluation of submarine acoustic stealth technology and propulsor design. Lake Pend Oreille is a critical body of water to the U.S. Submarine Force.

Virginia-class submarines are built to operate in the world's littoral and deep waters while conducting anti-submarine warfare; anti-surface ship warfare; strike warfare; special operations forces support; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; irregular warfare; and mine warfare missions. This next-generation attack submarine provides the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the nation's undersea superiority well into the 21st century.   Media may direct queries to the Navy Office of Information at (703) 697-5342. Below Deck Loses 2 Crewmembers After a Firing and a Dramatic Season 11 Departure

Below deck 's capt. kerry titheradge fired the first season 11 yachtie during the bravo series' march 18 episode, but that wasn't the only shocking departure. find out who else left the yacht..

The  St. David  is down not one, but two crewmembers.

During Below Deck 's March 18 episode, Captain Kerry Titheradge  fired the first season 11 yachtie when he let Bosun Jared Woodin go for unprofessional behavior, the last straw being an inebriated Jared barging into Stew Barbie Pascual 's cabin the night prior and yelling at Deckhand Kyle Stillie for leaving a mess of loose tobacco on the deck after a night of partying.

"This is the second time you've gone on the piss and you've had bad behavior," Kerry told his subordinate. "You're in a leadership role. You can't be acting like that. You gotta be above the fray. The way that you're treating these guy is not acceptable."

But it wasn't just the alcohol that was the problem, as Kerry noted Jared's mental state wasn't where it needed to be. "You've got s--t going on, man," he shared. "You're your own worst enemy right now. You need to depart the vessel."

However, Jared agreed his head wasn't in the right place and accepted his termination graciously.

"This ain't the right place for me at the right time," Jared replied, to which Kerry responded, "I don't blame you for that. Take this time and work on yourself. Me keeping you here is a disservice to you."

Before departing the super-yacht, Jared reflected in a confessional, "I thought I was in a good headspace coming into this. I'm really not. And as much as I'd like to be I'm just lying to myself."

But Jared wasn't the only teammate to set sail during the latest episode. Stew Cat Baugh willingly left the ship after admittedly struggling with the job all season long.

"I really wanna push through for you guys," Cat, in tears, told Chief Stew Fraser Olender after receiving a very distressing call from a friend back home in America. "I'm just losing my mind right now."

And Fraser totally understood his crewmember's needs.

Trending Stories

Willy wonka-inspired organizer says his “life is ruined” after event, kris jenner’s sister karen houghton dead at 65, shocking stories about nickelodeon's dark side in quiet on set.

"If you're in a very unhappy place," he told her, "I'd rather you put your health and your mental health before that and we get you the help you need as soon as we can."

In a confessional, Fraser elaborated, "I don't know what is going on, but you can look into someone's eyes sometimes and see that there is no more that they can give. They are going through enough to be incapable and I need to do what's right for her. "

See how the crew copes with the unexpected departures when Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on Bravo. And keep reading to look back at the most shocking Below Deck firings ever.

If there's one thing to learn from Camille Lamb 's Below Deck firing, it's to not slack off on the job. That's exactly why the season 10 stew was let go by substitute Captain Sandy Yawn , as Chief Stew Fraser Olender continued to criticize Camille's behavior on board.

From being caught drinking while preparing for a new charter to partying at late hours and more, Fraser informed Captain Sandy that he had reached his "last straw."

"She's the common denominator in all of this," said Captain Sandy. "Great girl, great personality, but at the same time, we have to do what's best for the boat."

Below Deck Adventure 's Kyle Dickard was let go just three episodes into the reality franchise's latest series—which premiered in November 2022. After picking fights with his fellow deckhand Nathan Morley —as well as kissing crew mates in front of guests—Kyle was offered by Captain Kerry Titheradge the opportunity to resign so that his firing would not end up on his personal record.

Kyle took the Captain up on his offer and left the boat after just one charter.

Captain Sandy let bosun Raygan Tyler go during season seven of Below Deck Mediterranean ,  not only for causing the boat to  take a small hit while docking, but also for not stepping up to the plate as a leader.

But Captain Sandy didn't want her firing to discourage the bosun, as she told Raygan, "If I had the time and I wasn't running a boat this size, I would train you. I would teach you."

In addition to onboard romances and failing to follow directions , one of the biggest reasons behind stew Elizabeth Frankini 's Below Deck firing was her infamous laundry room accident , during which made a toxic mess when combining bleach and laundry soap.

"Unfortunately, I didn't know that was so toxic and I feel so bad about it," she told E! News of the incident in December 2020 . "You know, I do feel really bad, especially 'cause Francesca [ Rubi ] did say, 'Take it outside.'"

The bosun and stew were both fired by Captain Jason Chambers for inappropriate behavior after a night of partying with their fellow yachties.

Luke Jones was let go after getting into Stew Margot Sisson 's bed naked while she was drunk and unconscious. Laura Bileskaine also made unwanted advances on Deckhand Adam Kodra despite him telling her he was not interested in hooking up.

Jason made it known that consent was a must, and sent both crewmembers packing.

Tensions between stew Lexi Wilson and Chef Mathew Shea came to a head during an explosive dinner fight on season six of Below Deck Mediterranean , during which Lexi told Matt that his parents "should've aborted you." That was the last straw for Captain Sandy, who fired her not long after the incident.

Deckhand Tom Pearson said "bon voyage" to Below Deck Sailing Yacht after getting let go by Captain Glenn Shephard . Tom hit his last strike with the Captain after failing to report that the boat's anchor was dragging during heavy winds one night, causing a potential safety risk for everyone on board.

"It had to be done. It was such a grievous thing that he dropped the ball there, he had to go, and we had to just be man down and live with it, you know?" Captain Glenn said of the decision  on Watch What Happens Live. "So, obviously, you don't want to do that, but yeah, it had to happen."

Some people are picky eaters, but Below Deck Down Under' s Ryan McKeown was quite the picky chef, as he would judge guests'  food requests  and fail to take  criticism from Captain Jason Chambers , as well.

Perhaps Ryan's Below Deck exit is one of the franchise's most memorable, as he mooned Jason and viewers on his way off the boat.

Below Deck Down Under stew Magda Ziomek 's firing was another case of slacking on the job. After constantly being on her phone texting or video chatting with her boyfriend, Chief Stew Aesha Scott decided to replace Magda before the end of the charter season.

Below Deck Mediterranean 's Peter Hunziker was fired from the series in June 2020 after he shared an offensive post on social media.

"Peter Hunziker of Below Deck Mediterranean has been terminated for his racist post," Bravo wrote in a statement at the time. "Bravo and 51 Minds are editing the show to minimize his appearance for subsequent episodes."

Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier was let go by Captain Sandy on Below Deck Mediterranean after boson Malia White discovered her co-star possessed undeclared Valium and a vape pen, the former of which Hannah claimed was for her anxiety.

"If I could do it all over again, I would've just declared them as soon as I came on board," Hannah stated in an August 2020 interview with E! News. "It was definitely not something that was intentional. I wasn't trying to hide anything.

Below Deck Mediterranean 's Delaney Evans left just as quickly as she arrived. After initially being brought on during season six to help out Chief Stew Katie Flood , Katie determined that Delaney was doing more harm than good, choosing to let her go after just one charter.

"I think she was overwhelmed with the situation, and I think that, you know, in her mind, the best solution to the situation was just to go back to what they had before," Delaney told Bravo Insider of Katie's decision. "I think she was just overwhelmed with everything that was going on and all the feedback she was getting."

Deckhand Shane Coopersmith was a bit in over his head on season eight of Below Deck , as he was let go for failing to know basic skills, reporting late for duty and taking naps on the job.

Chaos in the kitchen led to Captain Lee Rosbach letting Chef Leon Walker go on season three of Below Deck . After an oven fire broke out , Lee placed the blame on Chief Stew Kate Chastain but was ultimately the one sent home.

Like several of the franchise's stars, Below Deck 's Chris Brown  was fired  during season five for failing to fully perform his duties. After being let go by Captain Lee, Chris shared some parting words as he left the boat, stating , "Who gives a s--t?"

Chef Mila Kolomeitseva was fired by Captain Sandy on season four of Below Deck Mediterranean after failing to use her cooking skills to produce top-quality food for guests—including some not-so-nice nachos .

"Of course it makes me feel awful," Mila said of her departure . "People like me who have big egos sometimes have to be put down to earth a little bit. But it makes me feel like I want to work even harder."

Sometimes people just don't work well together. That's exactly why Captain Lee fired Chandler Brooks during season six of Below Deck , telling the boson, "I don't think it's a good fit."

Alert - No More Visa-Free Transit At Moscow. Don't trust the Novotel website or staff...

Passengers transiting in Moscow should note that Aeroflot has decided not to provide transportation for visa-free lengthy stop overs. The policy was changed some four weeks ago, but either Novotel did not get the message or they purposely lied to get me to reserve a room there. Three days before I left the staff at Novotel returned my email ensuring I would not need a Russia visa to stay at their hotel. Aeroflot eventually agreed to transport me to Novotel but this was after much yelling and waiting for close to four hours. Novotel blocks off a section of the hotel where those with no Russian visa can stay overnight. Guests in this section have to stay in this small area and are not allowed use of the rest of the hotel facilities. Rooms in this section were not very nice. Poor wifi and weird desk configuration made it difficult to get any work done. In short there is no more visa free stays outside the airport and Novotel is lying they still put this on their website. This was on of my worst ever hotel experiences More

Dear guest! Thank you for choosing “Novotel Sheremetyevo Airport” and for your feedback. We apologize for the inconveniences you have had during your stay at the hotel. But we would like to mention that due to Russian migration law people with no Russian visa can’t be on the territory of Russian Federation. And our hotel is one of few hotels which has a special transit zone for the no visa guests. This ability makes some restrictions. We understand that guests can feel uncomfortable without an opportunity to use all the services of the hotel, for example, swimming pool, hammam, Fusion and Grill bar. As for Wi-Fi connection, we can’t guarantee its speed. As a rule, in the evening many guests use the Wi-Fi and the speed can fall. We would like to assure you that all your comments will be taken into account. Guests’ comments are very important for us because it helps us to improve higher level of service. Hopefully you would give us another visit on your next visit to “Novotel Sheremetyevo Airport” so we will try to change your opinion regarding the quality of service at our hotel! After leaving Barcelona by Aeroflot, we had a good 21 hours in Moscow. We had no problem in getting on the shuttle bus upon arrival. The reception was friendly and paid attention to details. The room was spacious and clean. They also had a big office to keep baggage for the guests who would like to have a brief visit in the city after checking out.

Dear guest! Thank you very much for staying at “Novotel Sheremetyevo Airport” and leaving a positive feedback on TripAdvisor.com. We are glad to find out that you enjoyed your stay with us. Please, accept our special thanks for regarding the staff of the reception. Such comments as yours inspire us to work with even better enthusiasm and passion! We sincerely hope, that during your next visit to the capital of Russia you will stay at “Novotel Sheremetyevo Airport”! Maxim Petrov General manager

I contacted the hotel before arrival to make sure that I didn't need a Russian visa to stay at the hotel for a layover and was assured that it was no problem. However, the terminal that I flew into had no exit. I called the hotel several times to ask how I was to exit this terminal and the agent said to go to the information desk. However, the person at the desk was adamant that without a visa, I couldn't leave the airport. I called the hotel back and he said he would send someone one to come and get me inside the terminal. This person never arrived. I called the hotel back a fifth time (very expensive international calls) and the agent, Andrei, conceded that there was no way for me to leave the terminal and get to the hotel. He apologized and said to call Expedia to get a refund. This experience wasted over an hour of my time when I could have been getting valuable sleep. Save yourself the trouble and book the SVO Capsule Hotel inside the terminal which was convenient and sufficiently quiet if you have a layover. Also, when I called to get a refund, the hotel refused and claimed I was a no show. Expedia was no help in getting this refund. I had to go through my credit card to dispute the charge. Lesson learned: I will never use Expedia again.

Dear guest! Thank you for choosing “Novotel Sheremetyevo Airport” and for your feedback. Our hotel is one of a few hotels which has an opportunity to accommodate no Russian visa passengers and due to Russian migration law we have a special zone for these people. Upon your arrival you need address to a representative of Aeroflot company at the airport who get you to our hotel because unfortunately you can’t do it by yourself. We are really sorry that you had such experience and couldn’t stay with us. We would like to assure your that it is not normal for our hotel that our receptionists couldn’t explain you how to get to our hotel because we always try to help our guest to do it. Be sure that all measures will be taken to prevent such situations in future and we will organize additional trainings for the staff on professionalism and helpless. In spite of the fact that you had such experience we hope that you will choose again our hotel and we will do to change your opinion regarding the staying at Moscow. Maxim Petrov General manager

I stayed there for one night for transit via Moscow airport. The hotel located very close to the airport, they offer free shuttle bus between airport and the hotel every 20 mins. The room and bed are comfortable. Even I didn't travel to the city, but I did enjoy Russian cuisine in the hotel restaurant. As a hotel for transit, this is recommended.

House passes TikTok bill that could ban app in the U.S., spawning Senate support

The swift rebuke shifts attention to the senate, where the bill faces political barriers and constitutional concerns.

The House overwhelmingly passed a measure Wednesday to force TikTok to split from its parent company or face a national ban, a lightning offensive that materialized abruptly after years of unsuccessful negotiations over the platform’s fate.

The legislation, approved 352 to 65 , is a sweeping bipartisan rebuke of the popular video-sharing app — and an attempt to grapple with allegations that TikTok’s China-based parent, ByteDance, presents national security risks.

For years, lawmakers have been introducing proposals seeking to restrict the company’s activities in the U.S., and finding limited momentum. But these lengthy behind-the-scenes deliberations were hastened, lawmakers said, by the Biden administration’s growing support of the effort, coupled with concerns about TikTok’s potential to influence U.S. politics, which intensified after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

Private briefings from national security and law enforcement officials, including a classified hearing last week, served as a “call to action” for Congress to “finally” take a stand against TikTok, said Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. It’s unclear whether these meetings with the FBI, Justice Department and Office of the Director of the National Intelligence surfaced new evidence against the company.

Proponents of the renewed campaign in the House, who sped the bill from introduction to a floor vote in just eight days, were undeterred by a major lobbying blitz from TikTok, which enlisted its users to speak out against the legislation with in-app pop-up messages and dispatched CEO Shou Zi Chew to muster support against it this week in the Senate.

“We were working with stakeholders for months on this particular issue after the last attempt and that’s why, in part, the vote is so big,” said Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), one of the bill’s lead sponsors.

Its fate now rests in the Senate , where the bill picked up two major endorsements Wednesday, but where key holdouts could grind the effort to a jarring halt. Some senators have expressed concern that it may run afoul of the Constitution by infringing on millions of Americans’ rights to free expression and by explicitly targeting a business operating in the United States.

TikTok’s possible ban

“The overwhelming vote today is a strong signal to the Senate that they need to act,” Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), whose committee advanced the TikTok bill just days prior, told reporters.

Though TikTok is incorporated in the United States and has headquarters in Los Angeles, its ties to Beijing-based tech giant ByteDance have long triggered fears that the app could be weaponized by the Chinese government to snoop on Americans or shape their political views. TikTok says it has never shared U.S. user data with China, and its critics have yet to present evidence to the contrary. TikTok has also disputed claims of any foreign interference or influence.

But the assurances have failed to assuage many lawmakers on Capitol Hill. TikTok has been unable to reach a deal with national security officials to quell their concerns — fueling efforts in Congress.

TikTok blasted the House’s “secret” discussions over its future on Wednesday, saying in a statement that “the bill was jammed through for one reason: it’s a ban.”

“We are hopeful that the Senate will consider the facts, listen to their constituents, and realize the impact on the economy, 7 million small businesses, and the 170 million Americans who use our service,” the company said in a social media post.

Lawmakers unveiled several proposals last year aimed at granting the federal government more power to restrict TikTok and other apps believed to be linked to U.S. adversaries. Last March, House lawmakers hauled in TikTok’s CEO for a contentious hearing as they looked to build momentum for action against the firm.

The push appeared to fizzle amid blowback from liberal Democrats, who said it flouted free-speech rights, and Republicans, who argued it would grant the federal government excessive power to prohibit or censor digital services.

The dynamics suddenly shifted last week after the leaders of key House committees announced they had reached an agreement on new legislation targeting TikTok.

“This is not just something that just happened overnight. This is something we’ve been working on for quite a while,” said Rep. Bob Latta (R-Ohio), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Krishnamoorthi and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), leaders of the select committee on China, had previously introduced another bill targeting TikTok that was stymied amid constitutional concerns. The Commerce panel greenlit the bill led by Gallagher and Krishnamoorthi 50-0 last week, advancing it just two days after its introduction, an unheard-of pace for legislation targeting tech companies.

Other members, including Krishnamoorthi and fellow Democrat Jared Moskowitz (Fla.), said the platform’s role in online discussions over the Hamas attack on Israel helped galvanize support. “After October 7, we watched all the misinformation be spread around,” Moskowitz said.

Lawmakers have accused the platform of fueling anti-Israeli sentiment. A Washington Post report last year found that hashtags associated with both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian sentiment are often used to criticize those movements, while TikTok’s opaque algorithms and metrics make determining the magnitude of activity difficult.

It’s not immediately clear what information about the company’s practices the closed-door session surfaced, and other members said they have significant concerns about the bill’s implications on privacy, competition and free speech.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) criticized the chamber’s “rushed” consideration of the bill, which she opposed, saying she had not heard any adequate rationale for it.

“Rarely do I see any legislation move with this urgency,” she said in an interview. “I am not really getting any sort of sufficient answer as to what is prompting the urgency here.”

Rep. Jim Himes (Conn.), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said lawmakers should be focused instead on passing privacy safeguards for all companies. “To start threatening to shut down platforms when we can’t even get our act together to get a federal privacy law passed is a little crazy,” he said.

Lawmakers have tried and failed for years to pass legislation to crack down on tech companies’ privacy and content moderation practices and alleged anti-competitive abuses.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers on the House antitrust committee spent more than two years investigating and crafting legislation aimed at barring major tech companies from squelching competitors before marking up any legislation in 2021 .

Senators, meanwhile, held numerous hearings on child online safety after a Facebook whistleblower stepped forward with allegations of company wrongdoing, and it took until the next year for a key panel to adopt a pair of proposals aimed at expanding guardrails for kids.

Frances Haugen took thousands of Facebook documents: This is how she did it

The latest House salvo against TikTok has moved much faster, and is the first time a chamber of Congress has approved legislation that could lead to the platform’s prohibition throughout the country.

TikTok mounted an aggressive push to thwart the House’s consideration of the measure over the past week, directly urging U.S. users to contact their representatives and oppose it in a pop-up message. The tactic inundated congressional offices with calls , at times forcing offices to shut off their phones. But it also riled up House leaders, who accused the company of wielding its vast power in a bid to upend the congressional debate over its future.

“That actually proved the point to a lot of members who may have been on the fence before,” Gallagher said Wednesday of TikTok’s ability to shape public opinion. TikTok last week said it was “shameful members of Congress would complain about hearing from their own constituents.”

Some Silicon Valley figures cheered on the legislation, reflecting the growing hostility toward China across the industry. Keith Rabois, managing director of Khosla Ventures and one of the most prominent Republicans in the tech industry, posted on X that he would “never fund any Republican candidates or leadership PACs (or the NRSC) run by Republicans who vote against the TikTok legislation.”

The bill lacks a companion measure in the Senate, where lawmakers have pushed for competing approaches for months to tackle concerns over apps viewed as security threats. The dynamics signal a tougher and probably slower path to passage there.

But its Senate outlook looks rosier after Wednesday’s sweeping House vote, with the two leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee putting their support behind the legislation.

“We were encouraged by today’s strong bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives, and look forward to working together to get this bill passed through the Senate and signed into law,” Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), the chair and vice chair of the committee, said in a joint statement.

Lawmakers have floated numerous other approaches, including a yet-to-be-unveiled bill from Senate Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and separate proposals from both Warner and Rubio, but none appeared to gain broad support until House leaders released their latest proposal last week.

The House measure combines aspects of past bills, explicitly targeting TikTok and its parent company while giving the federal government a new mechanism to ban apps with ties to nations viewed as foreign adversaries. If ByteDance declined to spin off TikTok, the bill would require app store providers to stop carrying the platform, which could effectively shutter its U.S. operations.

Biden and his campaign opponent, former president Donald Trump , have taken conflicting public stances on the matter, with Biden endorsing it and Trump speaking out against the prospect of a ban .

Why Trump is now against a TikTok ban

While the House quickly voted out the measure, in the Senate a single member could block swift consideration on the floor by placing a hold on it, a step Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has already indicated he’s considering.

Another hurdle: The two senators most likely to control its fate have yet to rally around the bill or agree to take it up.

Cantwell, whose panel would probably need to sign off on the new bill, told reporters Tuesday that they “definitely want to work with our colleagues and see if we can get something that will hold up in court.” Likewise, Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) issued a brief statement after Wednesday’s vote, saying, “The Senate will review the legislation when it comes over from the House.”

Ellen Nakashima, Will Oremus, Drew Harwell and Elizabeth Dwoskin contributed to this report.

Possible TikTok ban

The House passed a bill that could lead to a TikTok ban in the United States over data privacy and national security concerns.

What’s in the bill: The bill, which saw bipartisan support , would require the social media app’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance , to sell off the immensely popular app within six months or face a nationwide ban. However, a sale that quick is unlikely . Learn more about what the bill says.

What’s next: The bill heads to the Senate , where Senators are dialing back on a speedy vote , and would then need to be signed by President Biden to become law. Even if that happens, there will probably be a long road in the courts to settle the issue. Meanwhile, TikTok would need to find a buyer, and a few potential investors are stepping forward .

How people are reacting: TikTok creators say a ban would threaten their lives and livelihoods, while young users of the app are asking Congress why they aren’t focusing on “bigger problems.”
